Very much the ying to End of Evangelion's yang. It compliments the original's ending whilst elevating the rebuild series to heights that were not imaginable before this film. A joy from start to finish.

It's the culmination of the entire series, and boy does it deliver! It's almost pointless to discuss individual aspects of the film, but it's an emotional love letter not only to the characters but to the fans as well. Really beautiful and moving.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is considerably the best film of the rebuild and has the ending that NGE didn't have.
The movie is very similar to "The End Of Evangelion", but in my opinion the ending is much better. The narrative concludes in a satisfactory way and I think it is a worthy ending to the series. I honestly did not expect such a good ending considering the complexity of the story, but it has far exceeded my expectations.
The only downside that I can put is in the 3D animation of the battles. The movements of the ships and the Evas are somewhat strange but also say that the environments and the quality of 2D animation have improved a lot.

He barely made it, after 8 years of production and the result is probably the best Anime movie out there in recent years. I was surprised how autobiographical this series is for him: Anno is both Gendo and Shinji, and that's why this series always felt incredibly raw and real despite its fantastical elements. An incredible piece of work, especially for Anime fans everywhere. Expand

Expand

The original was him trying to deal with his crippling depression and toxic mental state-the rebuild films are him finally finding a way to emotionally mature and overcome it. Having him regress and go for the same bleak/depressing sense of nihilism would undermine and cheapen the journey he's gone through. Being dark and nihilistic for the sake of being dark and nihilistic doesn't make something have more inherent artistic value. The only ones that think that way are emotionally stunted 14 year old edgelords, which this film is trying to admonish and move on from that kind of thinking. OG EVA puritans will probably dislike this film but for those that are ready for this series to move and finally come to a close, it's a welcome breath of fresh air. Expand

It’s no End of Evangelion but it didn’t need to be and I’m glad it wasn’t. Besides visually, it made itself feel different from End of Eva. There were visual references and musical references but that’s all they were to me; references. The way the two films end are drastically different and I loved both endings although I loved End of Eva’s more. End of Eva was a much more dark and depressing film and that worked perfectly for that original series. This rebuild series ends more optimistically which works perfectly for this series. The script here is great. It gives us a deep dive into each of our main characters psyches and what we learn about each of them is great. We see Shinji finally become the hero that he wanted to be and get the positive attention he always strived for and I loved that for this version of him. The animation most of the time is great. It’s on par with the rest of the series although it is weird at some points. There is a final battle between the Evas that looks really weird and we get a live action face on an animated body which was really weird but other than those moments, it was good. The music was great as always although the other movies music was better. The film has a much slower and light hearted tone for the first half and yeah I get why some people don’t like it but it worked super well for me. It gave us time with the characters and we get to see them in a new light before we get to the finale. What they did with Rei for the first half was phenomenal. We see the new version of her finally understand the joy of life. There is a moment though and she is written out of the rest of the film bar a scene at the end and I do wish it was handled better but I still loved what they did with her in the first half. There are some stupid moments here and there but overall, I was happy with how this rebuild series ended. I would definitely recommend checking this out if you have watched the other movies. Expand

They arrive at a little Japanese village where people are trying to rebuild their lives, while Misato and her team are preparing for the last attack against Gendo.

I'm one of those people who didn't like Evangelion: 3.33 that much (although I have the strong need to watch it in a new light), so I was a little anxious about how this final movie will fare. While I didn't love it like Evangelion: 2.0 (I'm one of those people) I liked it quite a lot. It has a good mix of good, wholesome, sad, frustrating moments that makes it hard to not like it. In many ways, it is a goodbye letter to the characters and for the series so it works both in plot context as well as meta context.

The flow of the movie is mixed though, the first half of the movie is the strongest one at least to me, we see our protagonists do stuff and develop their characters beautifully and sadly that keeps the progression of the story in a steady rhythm. The second part however is when things get a little rocky and in some parts make you think that a scene has been taken too much time, I'm talking about the action scenes. In the original anime, the action scenes were beautifully animated and choreographed, if an Eva connected a punch or fired a rifle you could feel the weight of them and each fight had the stakes up to the sky so it was easy to be fully engaged. The problem with this movie (and maybe with many of the fights of the Rebuild tetralogy) is that the fights didn't feel meaningful, in many of them we see our pilots shooting at enemies like it was a shooting gallery and every one of them dies with one bullet, so the danger is almost nonexistent, sum it up with serviceable but not great CG animation and you'll have a scene that will be (sad to say this) boring to watch. This pattern repeats in almost every fight so it really impacted my enjoyment of the movie.

Speaking of CG, I don't have a problem when they decide to use it but some scenes by the ending are tainted by an unrefined CGI that would be beautiful and memorable if they decided to do it in 2D (maybe) although it is a budget problem so I understand why they decided to go this route.

Evangelion has always been synonymous with religious and symbolic narrative with a lot of interpretation and that tradition still is true for this movie, it has a lot to chew on and what is so beautiful about it is that everybody will have an interpretation of it, for instance, after watching it, I was talking to a couple of friends and it was surprising how the three of us have a completely different interpretation of the ending and the fun part is that all of our theories could be the "real" ending, and that speaks a lot of the greatness of Evangelion.

The Rebuild tetralogy has been a polarizing series, it has very high and very low points through its entirety and they all are far from perfect (except for 2.0 lol) it somewhat shifted to a more spectacle route instead of a more introspecting one and that is OK, Thrice Upon a Time tried to do both and while it was a good choice the result was a mixed bag. All in all, even when there are things that I didn't prefer 3.0+1.0 was a satisfying sendoff to the tetralogy.

No world reset, no new world, no turning back time. All events of the Rebuilds still took place, all human losses haven't been reverted and everyone keeps their memories, etc., etc. ), which ultimately award it with a 0 or something like that, I thought I'd balance things out and just throw my 2 subjective cents in here just like everyone else while I'm at it...

Now, the word limit here is simply too low for me to copy - paste the countless thousand - word essays I've written over the months on why not only Evangelion 3.0+1.0 (if anyone is interested however, do get in touch), but the Rebuild tetralogy as a whole is actually great. In short, let's just say that it's a fascinating, massive - scale, unorthodox, a lot of times messy and flawed reimagining of the controversial masterpiece that is the original Evangelion series. An undertaking directed by one of the most fascinating directors living in Japan right now, who has matured both as a person and as a creative alongside the characters of his magnum opus.

I'm going to close by saying that, even though the Rebuilds are not NGE and don't try to imitate nor replace it, they're quite similar in many ways - even in terms of the flaws they share. Therefore, if one wants to get into the Rebuild journey, I'd suggest they treat it like the original. That is, they should watch it with their minds (and hearts) open, they should think before they judge and continue trying to unravel the puzzles Eva has always posed even after they've finished watching.

Do that, and I can guarantee you'll understand where all the praise from both viewers and critics alike comes from.

After nearly a year of its debut, this movie is a huge, utter, and disrespectful hypocrisy to the franchise and its message as a whole.

This last rebuild movie with all its contradictions to the franchise such as:

. Changing the philosophy of the EOE's message by saying that is time to go out, scapism is the wrong way, and live outside while the main character creates an utopian world, and contradicting by reseting the world when he textually said earlier he didn't want to, so this is a big incoherence.

. Nonsensically trying to give a hollow happy ending to the characters without earning it as well as changing their personalities to their worst, and saying all the time everyone moved forward and grew up when their actions speak all the contrary.

. Nonsensical fanservice.

. Imposing more meta than writing a well concluded story because out of nowhere things from the author supposedly save the plot-holes of this movie.

. A horrendous cgi elements that draw more people to give an explanation on how something thoroughly bad is good supposedly on purpose;

has an award as the best animated movie of 2021 in japan, plenty of blind praised, and will exquise the franchise.

The only upsides there can objectively be in this movie, are technical aspects in the music and 2d department, yet the last song loses all its meaning by the director's upcoming decision to eva franchise.

This director stated on the prime video documentary this tetralogy is a parody from the show; therefore, if he thought in that manner from what he made in those past 3 movies, what else could have been seriously expected from the final one?

Man, We couldn't understand one single thing of anything from this one either since everything went pretty fast, so we ended up even more confused that the time We watched EOE.

Honestly, the narrative part is quite flaw, and the message which's got to be the main upside of these films with this conclusion, feels completily preposterous.

Besides, the whole theater was empty, and I had to withstand all of this alone. For real, I didn't feel any emotion from the characters, and their development are just plain stupid as well as the message which is being tried portraying. For the first time in my life I never expected but coming out rapidly from a movie theater while watching a film. Expand

The story was already written and now they were on the last movie with so much to jam into it. The problem is xenosaga 3 had over 20 hours of cinematics to tell it and this movie only has under 3. Honestly the new movies have introduced us to new terms and sciences that are a part of its universe with no time to explain them. I also think they couldn't have gone with a more boring ending route. Lastly, buckle that seatbelt. Because Shinji will go from winey angst teen he has been for 3 movies now to a full fledge adult in the time of about 60 minutes. Not bad, but I am disappointed. I was hoping for finalizing story arcs for all the best girls and instead was thrown a whole bunch of mcguffins and quickly closing doors. I am usually tolerant of even bad anime, but I think this one gets a 3. Good music, great art, but focus was wrong, too much was added, and I think it is not going to be enough for old fans like myself. Expand

I didn't really have much hopes for this movie ever since 3.0 because that film is personally awful, and this one doesn't improve that much either the state of those movies.

Perhaps, the only thing which I can find fascinating, is the 2d, but by looking the 3d is like seeing a low-budget DVD-animated movie. Oh goodness.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OMG, I can't believe this after all the wait, is what it ended up like. Let's summarize the movie because I didn't like in the slightest most of the story as well as 3d, but the 2d was good.

So most of the movie is based on a message of growing up, touching grass, stop fantasizing a fantastic world, and you as a person will be love unconditionally? Because that's what I've got, so in a 120-min film this MC ends up saying all of this to the others before disappearing, so later he could refute that premise by reseting the world into an utopia?

Man, I can't with this anymore, I don't know why this was claimed as either the best ending or at least doing these movies a favor of being tagged underrated jewel when it actually makes them more complicated and unnecessary than they already are.

Gosh, I hoped everything ended in EOE, but it seems far from being the end at this point.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly bear plenty of the actions from the majority of characters in EOE and NGE, but here they all act stupidly without even making utter sense which makes me hate them yet.

.Shinji can't help the fact again that he's alone when he isn't, and still acts quite selfishly at the end even by becoming as many point out chad when he thoroughly isn't.

.Rei is split by two with her clone's appearance, and even though out of the most from this movie series who behave incoherently, is by far the best from going clueless to accept everything that's going on without any complain, but some of her actions are just holding back by clumsy screen play decision making.

Oh goodness, what have they done to Asuka? Since the release of this movies, I was pretty concerned about her portrait here, and my fears became true.

. Firstly, turning her now into a clone was one of the most stupid decisions which this series could ever offer since she's not so different from Rei anymore, and it's implied that she had nearly the same purpose like her in order to become a love appealing bait for Shinji which is a huge step back from NGE.

. Secondly, Manking her more aware of the situation but not making her get that behaving the way she was doing through out those movies, is completily wrong.

. Thirdly, If these is a sequel from EOE as well as being the complete and better take on her, then why did she still behave in that manner with Shinji by knowing that The 2.0 incident was on Gendo, and most of the movie address more that event as his fault more than the one in 3.0? That reasoning is definitely bonkers and baffling.

In addition, I even more hated This Pink-suited-4-eyes who is along side Sakura who ( in comparison with another anime character)'s the most useless as well as the pink haired dumbass who couldn't make reasonable decision by her own, is one of the most undeserving all-the-spotlight, badly written and annoyest characters I ever seen.

Plus, the fact that most of the last part was surrounding him and her due to an out-of-nowhere relationship which showed them running away from that world and portraying a hopeful as well as getting-out-to-the-real-world message, is just baffling because most of the actions showcased of that movie completily contradicts it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A series that doesn't know what it wants to be and struggles to tell a meaningful and coherent story all while relying on the originals to fill in the blank even though it is trying to be its own thing. It's a mess.

Oh boy. I don't know where to start. This film has good moments in it. I enjoyed the village Rei scene and the animations were great in that sequence but this film, like a lot of the previous rebuilds, suffers from terrible character development and rushed plots. Too many things are unexplained for no good reason. I could go on a massive rant about everything that the series did wrong just from a simple narrative standpoint but it would take way too long but I will try to target my main complaints.

There were FAR too many directional changes to the actual story without ever explaining further. Like how Shinji basically is loved by everyone when just prior he was hated in the film. Asuka's character is practically never progressed or developed properly up until the very end of the film but it was incredibly rushed. I wouldn't want this but compared to what we actually got in the originals it would have been better to just have not included Asuka at all. The CGI fighting was terrible and made no sense. I have no idea how Gendo was able to create billions of MP Evas as once again the movie doesn't explain a damn thing. Mari, an added character, is also never developed properly whatsoever. The fan service was also distracting and pointless.

The ending is probably the most frustrating for me. It didn't feel remotely earned and was so unsatisfying considering it left a slew of issues leading up to it. They tried to make you feel bad for Gendo but it wasn't working. The guy is a PoS psychopath and neglected his only child. The ending for Shinji is also incredibly hypocritical to what the message of the series "tries" to convey and makes no sense narratively either. Anno also trying to hint this idea of "time to move on from Eva, we all need to grow up" was not needed at all. Why is that important to tell us this? Anno chose to continue the series and has made a fortune off of it so ontop all of that, he fails to properly flesh out a good coherent story that he wanted to tell us, and then tell his fans to move on at the same time to add insult to injury?

I am sorry if I sound like I am ranting a bit but I do not understand the current perception that the final film has gotten. There is still so much more I could say about questionable decisions made in this series but I think you get the point. The ending teaches me nothing of use compared to what the originals tried to tell you.

-3d animated fight scenes just don't look good and I'm tired of everyone pretending that they do in this film, the effects have come a long way but we all know they pale in comparison to the 2d stuff. -The scene where gendo gets his own EVA is probably the dumbest scene in the entire series, it flies directly in opposition with his character and was just there to appeal to morons that need a big dumb robot fight.

-This movie literally rehashes the same scenes from End just to ignite nostalgia, probably because the director ran out of ideas and just decided to do the same thing again

One of the greatest well-crafted farewell theme in anime history!

This last film of its modern tetralogy was specially made for saying goodbye to all people who've been fond of this anime franchise for 25 years (since 1995). It took this theatrical anime 8 years of making, and I would love to say: it's more than worth!

This anime film had everything that all film/animation students could definitely learn and enjoy with, such as visually stunning 2D animation, unpredictable camera angles, great soundtrack, well-done sound mixing & sound editing, well-crafted storytelling, top-notch film editing and great voice actings.

Of course, this film actually had left few flaws on itself such as overusing 3D-CGI and listless fight scenes, but those flaws weren't the main points of this film tho. I considered that as the reason why creator (Hideaki Anno) decided to turn Gendo into what he is in this film; because we can't have a good farewell without sharing peaceful times to each others and we can't either clear the air by fighting to death but talking to each others :)

It's about a boy who tries to start a new life and how the previous events leave him traumas and issues, we follow him, Shinji, Asuka, Mari and Rei in this stage of superation and the start of a better life. To undesrstand the movie and the plot you ned to watch the anime and the 4 movies before but all of them deserves to be watched, absolutely masterpieces.
Megumi Ogata is the voice actress (japanese voices) of the main character, she's also the voice of Okkotsu Yuta from Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and she plays it in an amaizing way.
I cried a lot because I love the history and I enjoyed the soundtrack a lot, specially the final song 'One Last Kiss', it gave me chills the first time I listen it.
