A hilariously silly musical comedy. Eurovision has plenty of lovely emotion, music, and enough hilarity to keep you engaged.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. YES! Finally a great amazing funny magical Movie in the Land of 'Heartless boring Movies' nowadays! I LOVE IT! Ive watched it already 5 times and will again and again! I call it a comedic Masterpiece...the fact that Will Ferell is far to old for this role makes it perfect and even funnier..he acted wonderful ...and sincere and shoots into your heart...I loved his performance the most from all his films!.....the whole humor is an own universe...it has an own form and I love it! as somebody who was part of the ECS EurovisonSong Contest Universe for some years, I must say it completely gives back the atmosphrere and Energy of this event...I loved the acting, very true and heart felt ...goes straight into your heart and soul, yes a FILM WITH SOUL! made with Love, and I love the humor here..what would i give to have been part of it and be in it....also for people who never aimed there dreams or never dream and are not living in different worlds sometimes or dimension, maybe you dont like the film, but maybe its for you then anyway??, its about Love and SelfLove Respect, achieving dreams and BELIEVING in yourself and all! A perfect Movie! great direction! the camera amazing!!!!! the costumes WOW WOW WOW just lovely....also the Music is incredibly mesmerizing ...i even sing it on Smule...better then some music now, where Artists have sold there souls.....its a kind of Phantasy Reality Film...I love the script and the direction is superb!! the only tiny thing i would ve changed in the script is: (Attention dont read further as spoiler Alert) when Victor wants to kill Lars that after the elves help him...lars touches the knife and might be accused as murder...so i wouldve find it funny if after the film ends one of the elves would appear and taking the knife inside the house while giggling away...with it, or he Lars not touching the knive....but maybe its left like this for a 2nd Part of Fire Saga...the saga goes on :) haha just my fantasy takes a ride here.....all in all I Loved the Film and if you believe in the good and in Love and Elves great Characters, Fun, and all things Spiritual yould love this film, is worth to watch....it brings joy! xxx Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finally watched Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga and I love Eurovision so I had high hopes for the movie and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga did not disappoint, it perfectly represented the contest in very respectful way that was really funny, entertaining, and fully of heart but did not parody or make fun of it. The music was phenomenal, so we'll written and produced and really felt like songs you could see in Eurovision I especially loved the songs Husavik (My Hometown), Double Trouble, and Lion of Love. The Song-a-Long moment was awesome I loved seeing all of those previous Eurovision competitors especially Alexander Rybak, Netta, Loreen, Conchita Wurst, and Anna Odobescu who are some of my all time favorite Eurovision competitors. The writing was superb very funny but still very touching and full of heart. Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, Dan Stevens, Demi Lovato, and Natasia Demetriou gave excellent performances. The costumes were outstanding especially ones wore by Rachel McAdams, Will Ferrell, Dan Stevens, Netta, and Conchita Wurst. The makeup and hairstyling was great especially on Rachel McAdams, Will Ferrell, and Dan Stevens. This was a really great movie. Expand

Will Farrell is an absolute embarassment and a strong arguement against the continual spew of trash grade American cinema. My biggest issue with this film is its humor and length. First of all, I really didn’t find this that funny at all. I maybe chuckled a couple of times here and there but I never laughed at all. This film does not need to be 2 hours long. There is a lot here that can edited down or cut out entirely. This film also falls victim to many band movie cliches which makes it feel unoriginal and boring. The filmmaking here is pretty bland too. It’s not poorly shot but it’s blandly shot. It’s not poorly edited but it’s blandly edited and so on. One thing I did enjoy was some of the songs and performances. Although some of the songs are auto tuned to hell there are some that do sound genuine and they aren’t half bad. Will Ferrell can’t do an Icelandic accent to save his life but he was definitely trying which I commend him for. Same goes for Rachel McAdams and Pierce Brosnan. For his limited screentime, Brosnan did bring a lot of energy. I did enjoy his presence. If you enjoy Will Ferrell comedy movie’s, then you would probably enjoy this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Director David Dobkin's "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga" is surprisingly a good film. I didn't really enjoy the innuendo nor the dead arm of Katiana Lindsdóttir (wonderfully portrayed by Demi Lovato), but everything else was pretty great.

The cast, which includes Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, Pierce Brosnan, Dan Stevens/Erik Mjönes & the previously mentioned Lovato, is spectacular in both acting and singing. The screenplay is nicely done, the songs are actually appealing, and the fact that this film was pretty accurate in portraying the Eurovision Song Contest & Icelandic culture is really cool.

The best thing about "Eurovision" is that it has heart. I was really taken back when Sigrit (acting portrayed by McAdams, singing by My Marianne) started performing the ballad that she had been working on during the film. I actually got CHILLS. I did not expect such a beautiful song at all. The screenplay also contributes to your already melting heart.

So, as most people have stated on here, "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga" is cheesy, but enjoyable. Honestly, I would recommend. Your time definitely won't be wasted with this one!

I visited Iceland for the first time soon after (and actually came across an extra of the film whilst there) and the locals didn't know what to make of the film's depiction of Iceland and the people. I believe the film was thoughtful and respectful to Iceland and the contest, but what the Russians will make of the Russian contest entry gender is another matter. A great fun film to be enjoyed best if you don't start with expectations. The songs were spot on. I have now watched it 3 times with different people who all loved it. Expand

Longest comedy ever, and it is only two hours long. This is coming from the same guy who watched 'The Irishman'.

'Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga' was fine at best, but I did not find it that funny. The only time I chuckled was during the more random sections of the movie. For whatever reason, the movie felt kind of stale, in terms of its look and atmosphere.

I am not sure if the movie is a parody of Eurovision or a tribute? You could say both, but I am not sure if I buy into that. If I must be honest, I have never heard of Eurovision before, so unfortunately this movie is my first introduction to the contest show. I think this is the reason why a lot of the jokes fall flat for me. Although, the humour and writing aren’t strong enough to stand on its own.

Halfway through the movie, it also turns into a music video with short appearances from past contestants who were on Eurovision. While watching that scene, I had no clue what was going on.

Will Ferrell plays an idiotic man child with a loudmouth that would often get degraded by his father. Basically, the same character he has been playing for most of his career, because I guess he doesn't have range. Ferrell’s Icelandic accent was extremely awful and at times I could hear him slip back into his native accent.

Rachel McAdams was the best part of the movie by far. McAdams has proven she can take on any genre, especially comedy. During the more dramatic aspects of the movie, she almost encourages Will Ferrell to "step up his game", in terms of being dramatic for a scene using only her acting. Her Icelandic accent was better than Ferrell's. Not great, just a little better.

Also, this is the third time there has been a connection between Pierce Brosnan and ABBA. I think it might be a sign. Overall rating: Yep, it is a Netflix movie.

The movie follows the story of Fire Saga, a lovely Icelandic musical duo (which everybody hates, I honestly don't understand why) that grew up watching the annual music event and that aim to participate in it someday, somehow. After getting there by one way or another they start they journey to Edinburgh, where many past Eurovision winners from Salvador Sobral to Netta also appear to be staying. The narrative continues and concludes with their participation in the Eurovision final, where they'll battle against other countries for the Eurovision trophy. This narrative is quite cute, exciting, cohesive but, in the end, quite predictable. Despite this, the cameos in this film like Demi Lovato's have been chosen with a lot of love and delicacy as well as the musical numbers that appear throughout the film. Never have you ever felt the need to jam to a rare but cute mashup of "Believe", "Ray of Light" and "Waterloo"? Well I can't get this masterpiece out of my head!
Continuing with the protagonists, Fire Saga are sometimes quite noisy and cringey all due to Lars' hypersensitivity and jalousie. Nevertheless, their way of acting and musical direction include the most predictable and best cliche north European-Viking-Icelandic stereotypes; and I love it. A low point for this film is the many idiot, middle age crisis dick jokes that appear from beginning to end. The landscapes and photography are amazing in this film as well as its respective soundtrack, which includes the most common Swedish-pop orientated songs to ever exist, a true definition of Eurovision. What also matches the contest with the film is the continuous fear to fail and deception, making representants think that they won't be anybody if they do not enter the top 10. It also remebles the popular feeling that says that Eurovision is a waste of time and a opportinity for artists to become one-hit wonders. You know what? These are the people who would rather see Europe entering a war again. Eurovision is a contest yes, it shouldn't be and it isn't if you don't want to. Musicians never think of having a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100, they just want to make and share their feelings through music. As simple as that. Having commercial success is just a consequence to celebrate if it happens. Thus, you can think of Eurovision as a musical war and fight against your Dutch parents or German cousins or just enjoy and feel the music without looking at the results.
In conclusion, despite its extensive length-over 2 hours-and continuous bad jokes, "ESC: The Story of Fire Saga" is a very nice film to watch with friends and family on a Sunday night after having some drinks. Just dance, sing and jam to this movie (forget the plot), you'll have the time of your life while crying and getting thrilled.

Its riddled with references on Eurovision that fans will highly appreciate, but will fly past anyone else. Oh, and this is part musical with its highest peaks being the songs so if you dont enjoy those, you will not enjoy the movie and should spare yourself time watching it. The weakest part of this film was, ironically, its main lead and head behind Will Farrell together with the often very thin plot that served as plot-progressing device (basically Farrall character keep screwing up, then fixing it just to screw up again), plus his acting faded in comparision with other two leads. Strongest points are Rachel McAdams who played the role of Sigrit absolutely great and Dan Stevens who crushed it and of course the musical numbers, especially performed by Molly Sandén who sang as Sigrid and Erik Mjönes taking on voice of Alexander Lemtov.

Importantly movie has multiple scenes where it hates on American tourists, which automatically brings my rating from 7 to 8.

I have never cared for Eurovision to begin with.
Hardly an issue to watch this film but still, facing that music was a problem and I like pop music but when it has this level of manufacturing, I can't stand it.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is pretty much the joyless parody I was expecting. And no, there's no surprises along the way to make it more functional or funny for that matter.

If you watch the trailer, which it basically tells you the whole damn story, you will get no rewards watching the whole thing. Unless of course, this is your kind of gig.

Will Ferrell shows once again he's not funny anymore and his career since Anchorman 2 has taken a turn for the worse. And that was 7 years ago.

Rachel McAdams was in for the check but at least she tries to make the thing more believable.
She knows it's a foolish parody but her performance feels way more organic than Ferrell's who's always trying too hard to force the laughs.

And that's pretty much the biggest flaw of this poor attempt. It's just not funny.
I can see that the people involved had fun doing it, but I think they forgot they had an audience that they also had to amuse.

The Netflix movie of the weekend as a novelty for its subscribers. They will get rid of it as soon as the finish it. And that's if they actually finish it.

Everything draws you in, the settings, the characters, the situations and of course the music. The stars of the film certainly do their part to make it shine, Ferrell's typical comedy bits find a place in this film and come across okay, not great honestly but there are good moments. McAdams is truly the one who steals the limelight though, her acting as Sigrit is simply charming, I find myself rewatching small little parts where her accent or facial expressions (or both) are just so endearing I can't get enough of them. The stars seem like an unlikely pair at first glance but truly do work so well together and they sell the love story of the movie so proficiently that there is no question it is the real heart of the film and the reason I want to watch it over and over again. Overall, it's a treasure of a film which has so many perfect moments and genuinely good music with a few comedic attempts that fall flat but which don't ruin the film. I'd recommend to anyone who likes Ferrell, McAdams, Rom-Coms, and/or unique pseudo-musical type singing. Worth the watch. Also coming from an American with exactly zero knowledge of Eurovision prior to watching the film. Expand

Will Ferrell plays an aspiring Icelandic musician who, along with his partner (Rachel McAdams), sets out to win the competition against massive odds, including their scant talent. This isn't Ferrell's first satirical spoof, but it's surely his worst. The plot arc is obvious throughout and too much time is drowned in his dramatic moments with his co-star. While the musical numbers are supposed to be smirking send-ups, they're didn't go far enough. Meanwhile, there's little comedy in the script (co-written by Ferrell) and none of the characters are especially amusing. Even Graham Norton, who acts as a commentator and is usually funny, isn't. The good news: The only cost to Netflix subscribers is 2 hours. Expand

Its not fantastic though, there were a couple details I noticed that were changed from the trailer i.e. minor lines of dialogue taken out at least in the UK version I watched. Its certainly not the worst comedy i've seen but its felt like awhile since i've seen a Ferrel movie that genuinely made me laugh constantly throughout.Did take slight offence as a Scot seeing they moved the venue of the Hydro and CGI'd it from Glasgow to Edinburgh. Why not just have the host city be Glasgow you really don't need to change much of the plot and saves the pretty poor visual effects of the entire building being placed into Edinburgh's Old Town.

The story is nothing special however I did think the ending half an hour was quite heartwarming but I wasn't really invested in many of the side characters beyond a funny line or two and the montage of songs felt really dated. If you have netflix, by all means give it a watch if you're looking for something light hearted but if you're looking for top quality you could probably find better than this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A much better movie than the reviews would suggest, the end plays like a comedic A Star is Born without the sadness. The cast was good and it had the right amount of humor. Although it wasn't always great at it at least there was an attempt to have Icelandic accents. Expand

There are some great set pieces, and the sequence in the mansion with all the ex-eurovision winners is particularly strong. However quite a lot of the time you're waiting for the next joke to fall. The film is overlong at 2 hours, and with some editing they could have made it into a much better experience. Rachel McAdams is particularly strong as the sweet yet ditzy Sigrit, and Pearce Brosnan puts in a good performance. I feel almost that the weakest link is actually Will Ferrell. He's just too old to be carrying off these kind of characters, and his comedic performance instantly reminds you of how he has played characters in previous movies. Nice gentle sending up of Icelandic culture. Expand

I left understanding that for all critics are, they're just people, and sometimes they have more bias than they do taste. This movie was excellent. It had lighthearted humor that anyone can understand, it represented the beauty of a small town in Iceland, it also didn't follow generic romcom villain story lines, which proved refreshing. Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams proved to be top tier actors, as their chemistry onscreen and their physical commitment to match the singing were fluid and in sync. All together when combined with inter-country banter, the movie proved a fun, passionate, and enjoyable experience. By the end you'll be rooting for the good guys too!
