Jake Gyllenhaal takes ones again on a great role and carries the film by himself. The director has went onto bigger and better films with Sicario and Arrival. Prisoners was a better film too. But this is no less a very interesting experiment. Not a must-see, but still good. Expand

Not nearly as bold as Villeneuve's Prisoners from last year, Enemy rests on another hefty performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. Villeneuve proves once more that his craft is unique and thought provoking; however, more symbolic and deep than necessary.

Anyway, Enemy is a Kafkaesque psychological something that didn't quite impress me. In fact, with such an idea, the double, which is not really anything new (it all probably heralds to Dostoevskij's novel rather than Saramago), with the immediate dreariness it may cause, one could have created the masterpiece of thrillers. But no, we have no such thing here. Expand

Bizarre yet intriguing, Enemy is somewhat enjoyable, but ultimately succumbs to an unexplainably abrupt ending, which leaves viewers questioning the entire film.

Decent, thought-provoking movie with not much substance. Some nudity, some cursing, and a lot of confusion and thinking. I'm sure the concept was great (maybe as a book or screenplay), but as a movie it didn't really work.

In summary, rent if you want, but don't buy unless you absolutely love the movie. It reminded me of another B-movie with Jake Gyllenhall: Source Code. So if you liked that, you might like this.

Es una pelicula que te puede hacer pensar mucho de que trata o por que pasan las cosas que ves, pero que te llega a entretener actuaciones muy buenas. dejando que cada persona saque sus conclusiones de la trama.

Over and over Gyllenhaal takes a step further into the self-created dark genre of his, he is way ahead of the game now.

Enemy

Villeneuve is going in the other direction. Since he has always had a trippy idea to film it on screen. His vocab has to be coherent even if subtextual. And compared to other projects of his, I think this is completely opposite. The co-writer and director Denis Villeneuve is challenging both himself and his audience. And what is at cost here is the cast's undisputed performance especially Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead, differentiating two personalities with nuanced ticks that could easily also be interpreted as a similarity. The film only tumbles when it drags the known and the unknown aspect of the storytelling by adding the love affair ingredient to this hotchpotch of melodrama.

It is to be understood clearly that maybe the writers felt the necessity on speaking the crux of the film, the rights issue and the identity crisis through clear metaphors as such. But in doing so, this analysation of non-insomniac or more accurately anti-insomniac case trips over its own obstacles. What or where then the film wins on, is purely on Villeneuve's direction. His methods that are convincingly effective.

Take the scene where Jake Gyllenhaal follows Melanie Laurent's character. Visually Villeneuve doesn't hold back on expressing the idioms, thr grammar, the logistics that the film or particularly the characters follow. And it is similar to the Coen Brothers' No Country For Old Men in terms of the physicality that it adores. Yes, adores. This psychological horror drama loves to romanticize the physical acts to the best of its ability. Just think about it, even the antics, the turns and the leads of the film rely upon a physical act, either a preparation or a performance anxiety. Enemy is a meta film, if we flip the plot of the film to itself, it is its own doom, there is no escape.

You have to think twice after this what you actually saw. I found the point in some review after that, and think this is one of the movies everybody should look twice to understand, but after all, it's not so special about it.

It's not a film that will be very well understood after one viewing, and even after several viewings I'm still trying to dissect some of it. The story is intriguing in so many ways and Jake Gyllenhaal gives a great performance as a man who may be a little crazy, but at the same time this is one of the slowest moving 1.5 hour films I've ever watched. The pacing feels a little off and makes it feel closer to 2 hours for me. I still enjoy watching it occasionally, though, as it forces your brain to do more thinking than the average film these days.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tf did i just watched. I knew that Villeneuve is always into cryptic **** but watching the whole movie, waiting to see how that plot is going to turn out... only to see a giant spider at the end. Man, if you have nothing to say or show - just don't do it. You can show literally any absurd visuals, not explain it whatsoever and wait for the viewers and critics to try to make sense out of this mess. Great story murdered by cryptic-spider-bs of the director. Expand
