Decent content, interesting morale but overly stereotyped.
I enjoyed how future earth was showcased, how precisely the movie manages to give a particular taste of how people live there in 2054. I liked the way Max's (Matt Damon) personal struggle and ambitions gradually turn into more important and humanistic goals. I love the chaotic dystopic universe of 'Elysium'.

But, and there are major but's : the first being Max's character. How many times did we see characters like that, who don't ask for nothing and are eventually ready to give their own lives to change a world that tried so many times to break them? How cliché. Add this with the fact that he fights with an 'exo-skeletal' armor type and it is more steretoyped than ever. The bad guy (Kruger) also is uninspired in its mercenary type of role. I said I love that dystopia, but are really the rich people heartless to the point to enjoy major technologic prowess without trying to make it accessible to enveryone? I mean our present is not far from this on a certain point of view but it's hard to imagine the future society based on such inequalities. I guess we'll see, hoping that there will be many Max around us in this case.

Matt Damon's acting is okay while Jody Foster's is very cool. The rest of the cast is okay too, depending on the role they had to play. 'Elysium' is visually very beautiful, colorful at times, and both the lighting and colours vary a lot depending the situation and the people we are following.

In conclusion, the structure is to me what makes the worst of 'Elysium', which seems to rush from a subject to another, and from a scene to another in a messy disturbing way.

The whole film is a trailer for the most part. Even if you remove the lack of logic of what is happening and do not pay attention to the unreality of the laws by which the world lives from the film, an equally stupid plot will remain. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Giving this movie a 0/10 seems petty on face value, and it was. It was just such a let down for something with so much potential. Here is a more fleshed out review; 1. Matt Damon is a lifeless robot

2. The plot has too many convenient holes >the CEO of Armadyne needing to be on earth, I get that he had an "important mission" but there's no reason for him personally to be in gang infested LA
>Max's foreman telling him to get into the Droid crate, you can't tell me your foreman doesn't know how the machines at your factory work. Getting him irradiated serves nothing but moving the plot. >Delacourt destroys the illegal ships instead of incapacitating them with proximity mines
This just exists more as a "ooo look this person is a bad guy".
>Kruger doesn't outright kill Spider in the final fight like he normally does with literally everyone else. 3. The science was inconsistent I know the "Sci" in Sci-fi is aesthetic and there are definitely worse instances, but this movie had some very solid grasps on AI, robotics, cybernetics etc, but executed them in a very idiotic way. The theme of this folly is their failure to understand the tech-tree. >Spacecraft that use plasma, to get this you first need a way to create or harness plasma, which requires you to physically fuse or separate molecules on an industrial level, if you have this tech you'd be able to "clean up" pollution, meaning Elysium as a concept wouldn't even need to exist. >Cybernetics, the most commonly held belief in mind-machine linking is the idea of artificial bodies, in essence, if you have the tech to link human nerves, you can just create an artificial body, so things like Mr. Carlyle dying wouldn't even happen, it takes 5 hours for the brain to become useless, they could've easily gotten a mobile surgery team out there and gotten his brain a new body, in fact from a technical standpoint it makes sense to even have cybernetic pins which allow for easier access. >Pollution, even right now the air and water and soil is extremely polluted, if the Earth were to become so contaminated that people feel the need to flee, then in that scenario the air would be unbreathable or at least almost but you don't see a thriving air filter market. or houses being pressurized to keep out bad air. >The date, it starts out by saying that this takes place in the 21st century likely just to fearmonger the audience but we have at least till Year 2400 before things really pop off.
>Bioenhancement, The surgeries Max gets aren't given time to heal, they'd result in tearing, and increased strength =/= increased durability, just because you have the strength to rip open a car door doesn't mean your skin or bones can withstand the trauma, yes even with an exo-suit your bones will still take trauma from a damn robot landing on your leg. >The healing machines, if you have the tech to beam matter precisely at a molecular level such that cells can connect accurately with each other then likewise you have the tech to beam objects through space, which means the scarcity on Earth issue wouldn't even exist, there's enough resources in the asteroid belt to build a whole fleet of Elysiums hundreds of times over.
>The spacecraft, this is just a pet peeve of mine, but vertical takeoff is just a waste of energy, it only works logistically if you have limited landing/takeoff area. >Robot batteries, the current biggest issue with robots is their power source, the only way to bridge this is a power source that requires little space or a battery with massive range, for the first only nuclear can provide this, for the second only hyper dense materials can provide this and it creates a feedback loop of adding weight and adding motors to move that weight, unless you then have tech that alleviates weight altogether (anti-gravity engines) One takeaway though; I absolutely loved when Kruger's boys killed those posh Armadyne employees on Elysium. Although making everyone on Earth a citizen is just braindead on its face, and from what I can tell Elysium is just the pet project or Mr.Carlyle and his buddies, the Earth government still exists as evidenced by a police force and Max being on parole. So this movie is more like you going to someone's private property and breaking all their locks. They might be the people who ruined the Earth in the first place but you'd still be a dick.

the Mother was the only good actor in this movie who played well and convincing.

Dislikes: "Based in Los Angeles 2154" While Out of Date Dubstep starts playing and pans to his Adidas High Tops from 2010, Los Angeles also Looks like a War Torn Syria after 100 years which took me out the movie and made me laugh.
The Characters are Pretty Run of the Mill and Bland
its takes the movie trope of Big Evil Corporation vs Poor Working Class to the next level with creating a whole different planet away from the poor Generic Unmemorable Soundtrack Music
Shaky Camera During most Fight scenes so you cant see ****
this movie takes itself pretty seriously with its story which definitely takes away from it, or adds, (depending on how your watching it)
how max decosta found himself from being a wage slave all the way to riding a space ship to a space ring while fighting robots and saving a child with cancer in the matter of days is **** hilarious to me and you cant tell me otherwise
The People at the Top of the evil corporation are the most generic emotionless villians ever, the movie is very clear on what side it wants you to support (with the working class and cancer child, different planet poor people) as these guys pretend they dont know what compassion, which makes the story feel un-engaging because you see it from a mile away, you dont get to see things from the perspective of people living on the ring and very little of people living in "los angeles", its a shallow movie
Ending was dumb, no spoilers

Agent Kougar is so **** insane and funny its the highlight of the whole movie, seeing what Kougar is going to say or do next was so great, i dont even know what hes saying half the time but i love it

Quality: 4K HDR on Q60T 50' [Bluray]
Audio: English, with subtitles. TV Speakers.

In suchThe problem with films that are overly based on social criticism is that they almost always portray society in a simplistic way: on one hand the poor and marginalized, on the other the rich and powerful. There are no half terms. In such movies, the rich are usually cruel and egocentric, the ruling class. Likewise, the poor end up trying to organize and take away their power and money in the name of a fairer society. Karl Marx would approve of these films.

In fact, things are never that simple, and society, no matter how bad it is, is generally far more heterogeneous than the portrayal of this film. Even so, there are moments when criticism brutally approaches reality. For example, when the guns of Elysium destroy the ships with the people who want to reach it. At that moment, it was hard for me not to think about the ships loaded with illegal immigrants who cross the Mediterranean every month in the worst conditions, looking for an Eldorado they think exists in Europe.

Despite the unappealing simplicity of the plot, the film pays off with good actors doing a relatively satisfactory work. Matt Damon, while not one of my favorites, is quite good in his role. Sharlto Copley is a convincing and rude villain, Alice Braga and Wagner Moura, two good Brazilian actors, do not disappoint but I have doubts about their ability to accompany American colleagues, who have a whole different dramatic school. In any case, they do not disappoint and honor the credits of Brazilian dramaturgy. The worst of this movie, as regards the cast, was the artificial performance of Jodie Foster.

The movie has good special effects, state of the art on a big budget movie like this. However, the pace is quite uneven and unbalanced. But worse than that is the feeling that we are watching a cold movie, unable to emotionally connect us with the story or the characters. It's worth seeing, but it's not that kind of movie that stays in our memory and makes us spend our money on it.

what binds all the mayhem..

Elysium

Elysium is a plot driven sci-fi thriller with a familiar theme that we have always been fed with for years, but with a newer perspective which is appreciative since it is more humane than we asked for. The premise guides you the one-man stereotyped action but at the end of the line surprisingly and fortunately delivers much more than that. Blomkamp's uncertain near future world runs on merit and doesn't rely upon any help, the protagonist or the antagonist will have to stand up after getting beaten down and take matters into his or her own hand. Eerie d.o.p. and pointless slow motions in action sequences unfortunately doesn't work in here. The production design is finely detailed with alluring set pieces, lethal weapons and slick vehicles that helps you feel like, future is here. The visual effects are decent enough to believe in it but is short on technical aspects like background score, cinematography and editing. The narrative isn't as exhilarating as it assumes it to be, it walks on a familiar path with a known textbook structure. The sense of urgency is the key to its fast and hard core screenplay that is equally bold and smart. The writer-director Blomkamp is much more powerful with his script than his execution skills which factors in when he is cornered to draw out the emotions from the screen. Damon is angry and oozes power from it with a reserved Foster, emotionally challenged Braga, supportive Luna and Moura but the trump card in here would be Copley's baddie that is horrifying to encounter on screen. The fluent screenplay, self-created high tech world and a children's tale are the high points of the feature. Elysium may take place in different and easily filtered acts but its easiness to transact from one sequences to another is what binds all the mayhem.

Known as Elysium their every need is catered for and medical advances mean even serious diseases and ailments can be cured almost instantaneously. Meanwhile those left on Earth suffer from the effects of overpopulation and climate change. With its excellent special effects and well shot action sequences Elysium is visually impressive and more than entertaining enough, particularly if you’re a sci-fi fan. As with his previous film, the excellent District 9, director Neill Blomkamp uses the sci-fi setting to offer social commentary on the treatment of immigrants and the issues caused by social classes. Unlike District 9 however it is all a little heavy handed and here with the antagonists seemingly being bad guys (and girls) just for the sake of it and so, while it is still worth a watch, it falls short of being a truly great movie. Matt Damon is a good cast as is Jodie Foster but neither get too many opportunities to showcase their characters as much as I would have hoped. Perhaps that's the movie's greatest flaw in that there's plenty of action but the thread that ties it all together is both familiar and lacking in heart. I want to be all-in with everything going on here, especially at the hands of the talented Neil Bloomkamp (District 9) but instead of being another masterpiece, Elysium is barely more than a decent summer flick. But if you're looking for something more complex, you may want to stick to "District 9", director Neill Blomkamp's previous film, which I also recommend.

Here, Blomkamp's off to a fantastic start; the first part of the film has the best world-building this side of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, with minimal exposition. The movie wastes no time introducing us to Max Da Costa, played intriguingly by Matt Damon of the Bourne franchise. He's a reformed criminal who gets stricken with cancer while working at a robot assembly plant. With just five days to live, he has to scramble to get to Elysium, a massive, man-made space station where everyone has these nifty machines (or miracle beds) that can cure everything with a simple scan. Along for the ride is his old flame, Frey Santiago (Alice Braga from "I Am Legend") and her gravelly-ill daughter. On Elysium, cancer, wrinkles and every other ailment are a thing of the past. The space-station is populated by the wealthy, who always live in paradise. They are overseen by Jodie Foster's icy secretary Delacourt. Earth, on the other hand, is a barren wasteland for everyone else.

The basic structure works. You have a sympathetic, resourceful hero, a ticking clock, and an impossible mission for him to complete. There's a heist in the first half that sets high standards for action sequences and staging. But in this more mainstream effort, Blomkamp acts like he's in a hurry to get **** done, just like our dying protagonist. As a result, we don't fully become invested in some of the characters, although we buy in to their motivations and emotions. This also means we get some plot holes.

However, the amped-up production costs suggest that Blomkamp has upstaged himself in the tech department - money very well spent. It's stunning when a $90 million sci-fi film has far better detail, entertainment and production values than a $250 million western (yes, I'm talking about you, Lone Ranger)! How do I know this? Beyond The Trailer told me.

Anyway, this original sci-fi story is a little undercooked (I wish Blomkamp took the HBO mini-series approach), but it still gets the job done. "Elysium" offers turbocharged visuals, fascinating ideas and emotionally charged action, so you'll definitely get your money's worth.

I feel the exo skeleton aspect wasn't written in well enough though. Seemed a little redundant and as it wasn't necessary to the memory transfer, seemed like something he wouldn't allow to be fitted to his body for nothing. Plus the exo vs exo fight was a little unexciting.

Not sure why this movie doesn't get much praise, as it was a solid film with a great plot and I'd definitely recommend and would rewatch myself.

The 1% are literally living in the sky, disconnected from the reality back on Earth, where the middle class seems to have disappeared and all that remain are the desperate poor, who appear to be non-white for the most part, the oppressed classes building the tools of their own oppression until along comes the one white guy who sacrifices himself for justice.
Elysium is very functional, moving from A to B to get to C, but in a checklist fashion, not in an organic flow. Its also incredibly miscast, has plot holes and a while it asks serious questions like all intelligent sci-fi should, it makes no serious effort to answer them.
Verdict: Its ok, but no District 9.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Elysium is a tour de force of science fiction and dazzling action. Matt Damon gives an engaging performance as a man who is working and living on a ruined earth. He wants to live on Elysium but Elysium is only reserved for the wealthy. He isn't wealthy and he is an ex convict yearning for a better life. He has an accident at work and his body is bombarded with radiation. He has only days to live and he decides to go to a friend for help. His friend gives him a mission to shut down Elysium's system. He tells him that if he can get vital codes extracted from this guy's mind and brought back to him he will give him passage to Elysium. The coolest part of this movie is that Matt Damon sacrifices himself to save everyone on earth. In the end, everyone gets to live on Elysium and nobody has to suffer anymore. This is one of the smartest science fiction thrillers I have seen in years. Expand

But I didn't like any of the characters, except for Kruger. The story is lackluster and the everything just seems very blah at times. I'll give it credit for trying to establish something with the background that it had but you can tell that the story they gave us for this back drop was not what it deserved.
Damon was very uninspiring in the movie, playing a man who was about to die if he didnt get up to the world. Jodie Foster tried to be the "ultra-villain" the movie deserved but it was Copley who had the best performance. All the characters were not great and it took alot of time to get things going honestly. But the movie, and the world, had potential. It certainly didn't live up to that potential but it is there.

With such an imaginative and well realized setting its disappointing that Blomkamp wasn’t able to create a compelling story and interesting characters to complement it making this a generic sci-fi movie. This film could’ve been something but its nothing. Its not that the story is bad or anything its just that the film has I lot of stuff I’ve seen before and not much that is new. Elysium is a very good hard 'R' action movie packed with Mech suits, badass guns like the modded Ak-47 blowing apart robots with explosive bullets and the 'Chemrail' that literally tears apart it's target, when the villains face gets blown off by a grenade you get the idea that theres some good stuff in here. Matt Damon as the main character 'Max' is good but every time sharlto Copley shows up on screen as the villain 'Kruger', he completely chews the scenery along with a thick South African accent and an assortment of tricks (or bombs) up his sleeve to take down his targets. Neill Blomkamp shows once again that he can make a thrilling visual treat packed with all sorts of exciting stuff. Expand

"Elysium" 10 Scale Rating: 7.5 (Very Good) ...

The Good: As usual, Blomkamp has a great and interesting idea. Very creative and full of social commentary without ramming it down your throat. Damon and Foster do a great job as adversaries despite spending little screen time together. The gritty backdrop (the same for District 9) of life on Earth vs. the peaceful bliss that is Elysium was an excellent contrast.

The Bad: The action scenes could have been better. Far too much shaky cam and fast movement so that you're not always sure what happened. Sharlto Copley, Foster's main enforcer and one of the main villains in the film, was a little over-the-top and was more interesting when he didn't say much.

Greed and selfishness is the Law-of-the-Land in Elysium! Don't bother healing the critically ill on Earth with amazing life saving technology. If the sick are not one of the rich and powerful living aboard the giant ocean-liner-in-space then let 'em drop dead in the streets! This is a place where Ayn Rand would be King!

Elysium is the ultimate gated community! A wet dream for any rich and powerful person who sees the rest of us as a threat. The corporations and their lackeys in government, the courts and the press literally turn the earth into one giant cesspool and then they get to escape to a corporate utopia in outer space! All I can say is: God help us all!

Films like Elysium are a wake-up call to help prevent what might actually happens someday if the course the vast majority of the world is on is not changed!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nothing mentioned in this review is past the 20 minute mark of the movie and much of it is mentioned/shown in the previews. If you consider that a spoiler, stop reading..

This movie is painful to watch. I can generally suspend disbelief but the broken logic was too much for me to get past. The planet is diseased and vastly overpopulated (Opening screen)? How'd they manage that? Bad diseases kill people. Apparently famine and war (which would go hand in hand) would fix the overpopulation issue, but apparently aren't happening.

Matt Damon's job is doing something that robots could do 10 years ago.,,and this is 150 years in the future? Oh and let's not forget the robots. Robot policemen who are programmed to emulate the behavior of the worst type of cop in today's world. Um, why??? In the previews, ships were destroyed trying to get to Elysium. What they didn't show was Elysium seeing them and contacting a guy back on Earth to blindly shoot shoulder fired rockets back into space to blow them up. Um, Why??????? No self defense of any kind on the space station? No lasers, or even the tiny rockets that Kruger fired?

The final straw was Matt Damon's "accident" at work. Besides being utterly predictable, they have all of the safety precautions employed in the 1910's. Nevermind a 4 ton door that won't open once it starts to close and gets jammed, yet somehow Matt Damon with a broken arm can unjam it?

I could go on but, my God, I can't bring myself to do it. I started getting a headache trying to rationalize the movie.

In addition, the last twenty minutes or so are great and really make up for most of the missteps the film takes earlier on. The direction here from Neill Blomkamp is very strong and the acting from Matt Damon is solid as well. However, Sharlto Copley really dominates the screen here and did a phenomenal job in his supporting role. Now, there are certainly some things I have problems with how certain things happen and why certain characters would do something (nearly out of the blue some of their actions), but it is ultimately made up by the beautiful set design, the really cool weapons they trot out, the good action, and the great ending. Without those things going for it, this one would have really sufferred from it, but thankfully, the end result is a good one and the film as a whole is quite enjoyable. This one delivered everything I could have expected out of a film of this type. Expand

Much like District 9 before it Blomkamp presents us with a seemingly all too real vision of the future in which the wealthy are able to live on a "Heaven" like space station known as Elysium free from all crime, sickness and disease. What follows is truly one of the most well crafted sic-fi films I have seen! Its not all action and that may turn some people away, but not me. It gives itself time to build up and gives the audience time to care about its characters. Take all this and set it against some of the most gorgeous CGI visuals you can imagine and you have a good idea of what to expect! Expand

I missed it when it was in Cinemas and watched it recently when it popped up on Sky On Demand.... aaaannnd BOOOY was I surprised. I mean, there was exactly zero chance that I expected it to be as bad as it is. Now I realize that I'm either in the minority or the angry half, so let me give evidence and thus reason for my argument against this abominable waste of time.

First off, the main character is dull, cliche and not a singe bit spectacular in the least! He's a downright **** hole at times and entirely unrelatable, making decisions no one ever in the history of forever would ever EVER make, and the exo-skeleton thing? Boring. The film shoots itself in the foot by never going into the abilities, or even the importance or point of the damned thing. So he rips a car door off and he punched someone really hard that one time... great, spectacular, real memorable stuff guys.

The story and narrative is an absolute mess and is rushed beyond belief. For a film that's an hour and forty minutes it flew by. It's such a scrambled disaster that I cannot decide if it just skips from Beginning to End with no Middle, or whether or not it has a Beginning in the first place. The narrative just drags the audience along, like it's mocking you. I could almost hear it shouting: "Ok, here we go, Main Character? Check. Pointless love interest? Check. Hilariously pathetic Villain played by the Main character from that film before this one that everyone will be comparing this film to? Check. Alright, we're ready, only an hour and forty minutes, go go go! " It's just loathsome.

The settings themselves are soooooo uninspired. It's just Poor Earth and Rich Life-sustaining Satellite. Seriously!? That's it? Where's the damn variety? You mean to tell me that humanity just splits in two? Life is that simple huh? A and B? Black and White!? What a joke. The Elysium itself looks cool from far away shots, but once I saw its surface I became enraged . Every house, every swimming pool, every golf course, every PERSON. It all looks the same. And the Rich people are pathetic and laughably designed. They're just your posh stuck-up, head in the clouds stereotypes. And they all speak French. And treat Robots with discrimination. HOW ORIGINAL. NEVER SAW THAT ONE COMING, AWARD-WINNING STUFF. Also, the movie goes into the fact that Elysium was created because Earth was too over-populated and economies were collapsing... so you mean to tell me that instead of using this amazing, ultra-super-duper technology, that can build huge Earth-orbiting worlds that can preserve human life in the wealthiest way possible, instead of using it to save lives or build new countries or anything charitable, no instead someone with the mind similar to that of Hitler thought they'd take being a dick to the next level and flee the Human Race's problems. Who came up with that idea? Doctor Eggman? I mean this kind of selfishness and just outright evil does not and just would not exist. It just completely goes against human nature, ESPECIALLY in today's culture. It's so unrealistic relative to our world that it's unbelievable... and not in the good way.

The ONLY good parts are the fight scenes which, where they surprisingly lack in quantity, make up for it in quality. The main villain is another horrendously laughable mockery. I guess they were supposed to make him a beefy psychopath, but he makes no sense (I didn't think it was possible to make no sense with making a nonsensical character, but apparently this movie somehow did it) and his voice is hilarious and unintentionally inhuman. While watching this it was the first time I've ever burst out loud laughing at an intentionally serious villain. Needless to say, he's just not threatening in the slightest, but the fight scene between him and Damon (can't remember main character's name, ain't that a good sign?) are futuristically stylized and fun to behold.

In conclusion, some of the designs are kinda neat and the few futuristic fight scenes are cool looking, but a Science Fiction film should not and basically cannot rely on Action to carry itself. Crappy narrative with uninspired settings and characters cannot work when paired with infrequent action scenes. Elysium is unmemorable, downright laughable at times, shameful in its depiction of a realistic future, boring, cliche and brings absolutely nothing new to the table. The only people I would recommend this to would be Nazis.

Such innocence. Such horror. Such BS. I especially like the ending where the medi-planes land and the thousands, if not millions, of health-care deprived and starving people have the discipline enough not to swamp, ransack, and riot the medi-planes. As if.

Social lefties Foster and Damon put together stale performances, at best. You will leave not feeling anything for either character. Nonetheless, they made their millions to take back to them to their private, gated Elysium of their own. There’s your social justice.

The special effects were the only good part of the movie, to be honest. Other than that, the plot and story was stale, under-developed, and unsatisfying.

This movie does the overpopulated Earth thing and does it in a fashion that would make Captain Planet blush. The hero doesn't do anything to adhere us to him, the villains are so over the top they come off as just cartoonish. The concept of Elysium itself is just odd, if going into space and building colonies is easy why isn't there more of them. Also the going into space part seems as easy as driving down the street all they have to do is wait for the colony's defense grid to go down to make a heavenly run for the border. It's also maddening not to at least see how the rest of the world is fairing in this overpopulated mess. What about countries that are already overpopulated today such as China or India? Frankly showing us L.A. as a brown dirty stain on the California coast is nothing new and it would've been better to at least get a glance at the rest of the country. This visuals are crisp, I'll give them that, although they just remind me of a dozen boring first person shooters I've played. This movie seemed to have a cool premise but when you see it you'll just come away confused or confused and laughing. Expand

Let's start with the one positive. The concept for the film is fantastic. The idea for an elitist group of society to be separated like that isn't necessarily original but there's a lot of potential there. Matt Damon and the rest of the cast is also pretty solid (other than Jodie Foster who sucks at life). The special effects and CGI are also pretty top notch but that's about the end of the positives. All of the other features combine to create an almost suckfest of a movie. The most glaring is the identity crisis suffered throughout the almost 2 hours. There are certain technologies in the film that would make Avatar jealous and on the other hand, there are things that we have right now. There doesn't appear to be any sense or logic to it, it's just variable and irregular and it kills the suspension of disbelief, which let's face it, this movie hinges desperately on. The plot is also ridiculously predictable and none of the characters are developed well. Overall, should've and could've been better with a quality director. Expand

Much like in his first film, Neill Blomkamp is examining a modern problem with a futuristic story, and once again, he isn't offering any solutions. As with District 9, Blomkamp is showing how an unsolved issue, left to it's own devices, will eventually cause chaos. In 2154, Earth is overpopulated and in ruins. The rich have built a utopian society on the largest space station ever conceived, and as you may have guessed, it's called Elysium. The story focuses on Max, an orphan and ex-con, who has always dreamed of living in paradise on Elysium. His plans to earn his way take a dramatic turn, when he is injured in an accident at work. Max knows he'll never survive on Earth and the only way to save his life is to get some of the advanced medical treatment available on Elysium. The two stories are very different, but the setting could have been exactly the same. The story itself was pretty good, there was a lot more action then in District 9, yet the similarities are unmistakable. Matt Damon stars and played the role he was asked to play. Max had a lot of potential to be an interesting character, perhaps one with an agenda, instead he was written as this dumb guy, who was anything but a savior to the people of Earth. Max was out to save himself and did what was necessary to survive, but he should have been more. The people all turned to Max to help solve a greater problem, but all he cared about was himself. Jodie Foster also stars, but has a surprisingly small role, that definitely did not fit her personality. Much like District 9 before it, the story of Elysium is used as a forum for the Writers agenda. The two stories are very different, but the technology, locations, and even several cast members are the same. The result is a slightly better movie than District 9, that will give you an eerie feeling of deja vu throughout. Expand

I really enjoyed Matt Damon's performance in this movie, but also the other actors, aside from Sharlto Copley's bad acting, which was awful. Elysium got a wonderful beginning, and overall didn't Elysium feel boring at any time, which I admire. Elysium is an enormous cool and awesome movie which is well made and contains many unique scenes and stuff that you haven't seen before, but the movie also contains some strange things, like the story, because sometimes it really felt illogical what the characters did in different scenes in this movie, but also that the story is a little misleading at some places. Another weird thing is the ending, and I think it's a great ending, besides that one of the main characters died, which isn't okay, because you don't kill one of the main characters of a film!
Overall is this a great movie, with a high amount of action, great story, many unique things that you haven't seen before and the thought about an overpopulated planet is great, because it might happen in the future, and even that the ending was bad and the story was a little misleading, is it still great movie, and I really recommend it for all the Sci-fi fans out there, and there are much criticism for this movie out there, and it really depends on the individual if you are going to like this movie or not, because we humans are all different.

Movies like this don't need any of the following qualities to be "good": 1.) Believability (according to who, and who would assume that what they believe could happen should be the same assumption for everyone?), 2.) Realistic action sequences and flawless special effects (I honestly do NOT care about this, unless it is painfully, painfully obvious that the action sequences are not of a professional quality.), and 3.) Sci Fi can still be "preachy" and still be science fiction. I never felt lectured to. I welcomed ideas of class warfare. Class "warfare" is a healthy thing in society, if it humbles the proud, and helps the more destitute and forgotten in society. I truly, honestly believe that the lack of compassion (or the grave need of it) toward those who are in need, or who are lonely, etc. (be it most any kind of need) is at the heart of this movie. It is about mercy, about the need for freedom and equality, about karma and true justice, and most of all, about selflessness, sacrifice, and pure love. How can ANYONE honestly dislike this movie, other than the brutality and language (and ok, the off-color, suggestive remarks, etc. by Kruger)? This is one of the best movies I have seen in a while. And one more thing. Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror/Supernatural movies, etc. are ALL HIGHLY unrealistic. People need to stop expecting this kind of fiction to behave in the same way as a crime drama, political, etc. thrillers, historical fiction/based on true events, etc., romances, most romantic comedies, and most other kinds of drama, movies, etc. Expand

This movie had a lot of expectations to live up to because of how unique and clever District 9 was. Much like my reaction Man of Steel, I can't really make up my mind. It did not live up to my expectations, but was a good movie overall.
All of the cast give good performances. Matt Damon is pretty good, Jodie Foster is pretty good (even if her character doesn't do much), Alice Braga is pretty good, Sharlto Copey is awesome. But what can you expect? He's awesome in everything, even when playing nerdy office workers/aliens. The special effects were very good, excusing Matt Damon's exoskeleton which sometimes looks like one of the 1960's Cybermen from Doctor Who, and the plots quite clever. It gets a bit straightforward in the last 40 minutes, but still good.
What really let the movie down was the action sequences. I had no idea what was going on in the final battle. It's a type of filming I've never seen before, it's not shaky cam it just changes angles too much. You're right next to Matt Damon's face. Then you're 25 meters away from him. Then you're looking down on him from up in the air. Then you're back right next to his face. Then you're a meter away from him. Then you're just behind him. And finally you're back up in the air looking down on him. All of these angles in the space of 20 seconds. The cameras not shaky, it's just changing position too much I have too come up with a name for this so that I can use it more in future. Unfortunately the action sequences are a large part of the movie. So it ruined a lot of scenes. But not the whole movie.
I enjoyed myself during Elysium mainly due to Sharlto Copey's amazing performance and the clever plot, but the strange filming style in the action sequences may have made it a slight disappointment.

They're psychotic and stupid, but dont get me wrong, if this movie had the story like Smokin Aces, than it'd make sense! But when you take a serious story and add that, it doesnt go right at all. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A film I very much looked forward to after really liking district 9. D9 had so much leaning towards apartheid in South Africa and Jodie Foster used the accent rather poorly I might add and this one basically used spanish speaking and Los Angeles as the poor area. Elysium is much like Newport Beach in "The OC" is treated and Malibu in Los Angeles. There are many other opportunities to venture on ideas and they were overlooked. The critics were kind of split so I was a little worried but the movie turned out to be awesome. The action was intense and their were some great characters. The main character from the first movie returns in a totally different role and I thought he kicked ass. I don't usually like Jodie Foster so her being the antagonist made it alright. Matt Damon did a good job and the mechanic suit he wears gave the movie some very memorable action scenes. I also liked the story a lot about the elite deserting earth for a haven in space, keeping their advanced health care for themselves and leaving the poor too die. The movie held my interest completely and definitely lived up to what I expected. Expand

This movie is piece of crap. I want the bandwidth I spent torrenting it back.

-Absolute cringe worth moments with dialogs written by, apparently, 15 years olds; I feel bad for Jodie Foster, having to act such flat, unidimensional and purposeless characters
-Propose interesting topics such as social inequality, healthcare and immigration, without ever discussing or developing them, they are just left like uneswered questions, like aborted kids
-Characters as flat and retarded as shonen villains and heroes... "Huuur hear my boer accent", action scenes are interesting but irrelevant to the story as a whole
-Plotholes and asspulls
-Presents no real ending, no "story lesson", no moral message
-Borders on propaganda, for example it's obvious the association of the elysian secretary of defence with french polician Marie Le Pen and similar stuff, but it's all presented in an overly simplistic, predictable, cliché way, and as I said before, it ends with no moral, it doesn't go into any depth

I only give 2 because of the visuals and the concept art.

Here, Blomkamp delivers a less astounding effort, but an entertaining and appealing socially conscious bit of futurism made on a much larger scale than its $30 million predecessor. However, unlike "District 9," the story of "Elysium" gets lost in battle once the weapons open fire without an exit plan in its mesmerizing futuristic landscape.

In 2154, the earthly population is split into two camps. The rich live in the luxurious space station Elysium, where the atmosphere is so pure that diseases are nonexistent. All those who cannot afford to reside in Elysium, must continue to existence on the contaminated soil of Earth. One of its inhabitants is Max (Matt Damon), a former criminal, who now works a routine job at a factory that produces security robots for Elysium. One day at work, Max absorbs a lethal amount of radiation, and he is given a bottle of pills from his employer to ease his pain for the few days he has left to live. With his life on the line, Max agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful, will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Max and his team attempt to kidnap and download financial information from the brain of John Carlyle (William Fichtner), the CEO of Max's former employer. Instead, they download evidence of a coup being planned by Secretary of Defense Delacourt (Jodie Foster), a cold-hearted official in the Elysium government who will do anything to protect Elysium from the unwelcome masses.

At a compact 109 minutes, "Elysium" is great-looking entertainment that might have reached its lofty expectations with a longer cut that would allow characters the space needed to develop back stories and expand. Damon’s performance manages to humanize Max to a certain degree, but “Elysium” suffers from some hammy performances, most notably Copley as the video game like villain Kruger. Instead of devoting time to character development and the juxtaposition of the two populations involving associated conflicts, Blomkamp decides to take the action route. The second half of the movie resorts to adrenaline-driven action which grows increasingly tedious with the use of a shaky cam that only leads to a sense of nausea.

As in "District 9," Blomkamp shows a wizardly eye who gets the most out of the visual effects, making sure CG images have the proper movement and texture to blend seamlessly with live-action and practical elements. The CGI effects however, while highly impressive, only take us so far, and offer only diminishing returns. Blomkamp's universe is a fascinating place containing interesting ideas, but there's far too much here to satisfactorily explore in its brief run time. Despite falling short as a social commentary and suffering from tonal severity, “Elysium” is most certainly visually stimulating.

Starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley and Alice Braga, Elysium is actually a decent little Sci-Fi fantasy tale that carries solid performances, adequate action sequences, beautiful visuals, and a simple yet well executed premise. Now the real question is, as a whole, is Elysium overall a good movie? It most certainly is. It is definitely not fantastic, but it doesn't fall into the "decent" category nor go down under into being terrible. Matt Damon is adequate in the lead role, but SharIto Copley steals the show with his convincing portrayal of a psychopathic mercenary. Jodie Foster was above average but her character was the typical power-drunken politician that we've seen in film over and over. Elysium is a solid Sci-Fi click with great performances, great though 1-dimensional characters, an adequate and not-so-confusing storyline, exciting action sequences despite the occasional tiresome shaky cam and smooth pacing. If you're a Sci-Fi buff like I, I would definitely recommend giving Elysium a chance. In minor areas it is a bit rough around the edges, but through my opinion and perspective, it is overall an enjoyable addition to the beloved Sci-Fi genre. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is from the director of 'District 9' which sets in the year 2154 about the people of severely damaged earth and luxurious artificial habitat in the space. I could say this movie was not much distinct from Tom Cruise' recent science fiction. Both the movie deals about ruined earth and wealthier space station colony. More like it is a prequel to 'Oblivion' where robots are taking over from the human race. I enjoyed both, they were the finest science fiction of the year. 'Oblivion' was unique but 'Elysium' gives the same feeling to the movie 'District 9' where protagonist from both the movies get infected and suffers severely.

Max (Matt Damon) is an orphan young man who is dreaming to escape the polluted earth and settle down in the luxurious place in the space called Elysium. He works in a factory where security robots are manufactured. One day something goes wrong with him while working, he begins to get sick. In order to get cured he must immediately visit the Elysium where poors from the earth are not allowed. He knows he can't enter legally so he must find an alternate way where he could reach his target.

2013 was one of the best year in last the ten years for science fiction movie fans. I thoroughly enjoyed many movies along with my favourite of the year 'Gravity'. 'Elysium' is better than the average, I don't know why it was rated such low. But I could not get a few things like why should one install electronic chips and devices into his body to steal the classified data. I thought the pen drive or external HDD are more than enough. Whatever, this movie looked good to me and expecting you to enjoy it as well.
