I have to say it's a great movie. I liked it more than bohemian rhapsody. The audiovisual side of the film is top notch. Give the same top.

I quite enjoyed it, but I have to admit I am not expert on history of Elvis so can not say how much was true and how much not, but it was entertaining throughout.

The movie is mainly about Elvis and Tom " Cornel" Parker. I was impressed by Tom Hanks who played Parker. Parker was an immigrant from Netherland. He lied " I was born in the USA". Drugs: he was an autonomous itinerant pharmacy, the film shows that it was the bad manager who seduced him with a handful of pills or tablets. Rock'n'roll: in his music the white component of country prevails over the black one of blues and gospel, the film transforms him into a paladin of black culture, even a political activist. There is much more truth about him in the brief anecdote of the meeting with Nixon told by Lisa Johnson in 2016 than in these 159 minutes. Luhrmann is the new barker who gets rich by parasiting the fame of his sideshow phenomenon. Canonical objection: does postmodernity not declare that there are no facts but only narratives, storytellings? It is a psychotic thesis that can be useful and advantageous to who knows how many individually, collectively, globally. Luhrmann's style is baroque indeed rococo, pompous, bombastic, excessive, tacky, a dizzying acceleration of Sufi dance with the aim of obtaining the same effect: a drunk daze, a vitalistic Dionysian spirit, Nietzsche's active nihilism. In terms of Baz Luhrmann films, this is far and away my favorite. What exactly that means, I'm still unsure, but it's definitely something. What exactly that means, I'm still unsure, but it's definitely something. As with other Luhrmann films, "Elvis" is no stranger to the occasional foray into demonstrating flair in favor of coherence, particularly in the first act. It's especially frustrating with production and costume design this evocative and good. It's like, damn it, man, stop cutting and just let me look at everything onscreen. After that period, though, the movie finally settles into a decent rhythm, where everyone's favorite songs are showcased and things tighten down in a narrative sense. Do I wish the titular subject was more of the focus, instead of the Colonel Tom Parker character? Sure. Am I glad the powers-that-be addressed the African American influence on the music in question? Absolutely. I guess you take the good with the bad. In this case, it all nets out to a mostly enjoyable — if sporadically over the top — experience.… Expand

However, Austin Butler is phenomenal as Elvis with his voice and body language. There are so many moments where it feels like HE IS ELVIS! I also found the second half of this film a lot more enjoyable as it starts to feel more consistent in its direction. I also like the visual direction of the director as it gave the movie more style.

Overall, I found the movie enjoyable nonetheless but I wish Elvis was more of the focus rather than focusing on the manipulative nature of Parker.… Expand

The film style works for the first hour of the film. The second half is for die hard fans. Otherwise you will just feel dragged into a weird interpretation of Elvis's life. I would be shocked if this film got an Oscar buzz.

Austin Butler deserves an Oscar award for his performance as Elvis Presley. The visuals and the performances are true representations and so gripping and engaging. l was pretty emotional a few times during the movie. Runs way too long and seems to gloss over seemingly important aspects and relationships. Even if Hanks performance was accurate accent wise it was extremely tough to listen to for almost 3 hours. Austin Butler did really well.

Let me begin by stating that the biopic was very dark and depressing. Austin Butler's portray of Elvis was excellent. It was so brilliant that I can see him get an Oscar nomination. Tom Hanks portrayal of the Colonel was so irritating and annoying. Once again Tom proves he can adapt to any role as he wanted to play it that way. He basically kept Elvis as if he was a bird in a cage and is largely responsible for Elvis' death at age 42. I think the audience would have loved to see more of Elvis' music. I also can't believe that no one ever looked into the Colonel's mental abuse and stealing 50% of his earnings. You would have thought that Priscilla and Elvis would have had that discussion however Elvis and his father, his business manager are portrayed as country bumpkins right up until his death. I find that near impossible to believe. I guess I went to see the movie hoping it would celebrate Elvis's life and music; but instead l, I found it downright sad and depressing.… Expand

A biopic about the one and only King of Rock ‘n Roll, Elvis Presley. From director Baz Luhrmann comes an epic life story on Elvis played by Austin Butler. Spanning from his childhood in Mississippi, his rise to stardom in Memphis, Tennessee and then onto Las Vegas. There is so much packed into this biopic, from his younger years and the aspects of his life that influenced his music but mainly his relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks).

Prepare yourself for the most insane, extravagant and spectacular movie of the year. I didn’t think Baz Luhrmann could possibly out Baz Luhrmann himself but it seems he had another level and all it took was bringing an icon onto the big screen. Look I wasn’t a fan of Luhrmann’s other movies but I absolutely loved Elvis, he was the perfect director to bring the King of Rock ‘n Roll to the big screen in the most accurate portrayal you’ll ever see. Whether you’re a big Elvis fan or not, this biopic is a masterpiece. I loved it, it’s breathtaking and I don’t care what else comes out this year, give Austin Butler all the awards.

Butler aced this performance, he captured the voice, mannerisms and the charisma of Elvis better than anyone else. You quickly forget you’re watching an actor. If there was ever a clear case of someone born to play a role it’s Austin Butler as Elvis. He was perfect, his singing and dance moves were exceptional. The greatest performance in a musical biopic by a long shot. Tom Hanks as the parasitic Colonel Tom Parker was an interesting casting choice and although there are other actors who may have suited the role better he played the part very well, even if he was doing a little too much narration. The movie exposes the relationship between Presley and his manager that’s sure to trigger some strong emotions from the audience. I don’t cry at movies but let me tell you, by the end things were getting quite emotional. Easily one of the best films of the year.

I was a bit concerned this might be an overly long mess but any reservations I had disappeared from the moment Austin Butler took to the stage for the first time and transformed into Elvis Presley. There is a lot packed into this and for the diehard Elvis fans, allegedly a four hour version exists so there’s even more to enjoy. Two hours forty minutes may seem overly long for some people but I’d honestly watch more of this. Austin Butler is just that good. The film itself is a dazzling and flashy extravaganza so full of energy you can’t help but love it.

Baz Luhrmann is a director who completely understood the assignment, telling the life story of Elvis in a respectful and mostly truthful manner. He’s clearly a massive Elvis fan because his love and adoration for him shines through. We’ve had quite a few music biopics over the years but I have to say Elvis beats them all. As someone who liked Elvis’s music but wasn’t well informed on his personal life I was shocked and saddened by how his life played out. It’s quite an intense journey of emotions and an honest portrayal of the unique man that was Elvis. The atmosphere is electric, perfectly capturing the obsession people had with the music icon. There is so much energy in this and the cinema erupted in applause when it ended.

It doesn’t matter what else comes out this year, Austin Butler deserves all the awards for that performance. He practically melts away and becomes Elvis right in front of you. The dude was amazing, the film is amazing, why are you still reading this? Get yourselves to the cinema now to see this on the biggest, loudest screen possible. It doesn’t matter if you weren’t much of an Elvis fan before now, see the movie and I promise you will be. Highly recommended for everyone.… Expand

An oscar worthy performance (sadly oscars not relevant anymore)
The only nitpick I have about the film is briefly played soundtrack songs performed by modern era artists. I will never be able to understand the use of modern pop/hip-hop sound in a film depicting historical events.… Expand

I grew up in the 50s and 60s loving Elvis, when the 70s rolled around I didn’t really care too much for his capes and big lapels and had moved past the music…. Also I had read that some of the reviews from the critics were so so at best so I wasn’t expecting much even though when I watched the previews I was taken how much Austin personified Elvis… One thing I have learned when the expectations are low you have a better chance of being surprised and oh my God was I surprised ~what a fabulous movie and tribute. I have very little to criticize even, Tom Hanks playing Colonel Parker I thought was good even though the critics hated him but mostly Austin really captured Elvis and the way the movie was made and created, led me along his life from a kid to the end and I fell in love with Elvis all over again~wished I had seen him in Vegas in the early days when he started playing at the international ,go see ,it you’ll love it if you ever loved Elvis and who didn’t love Elvis at some point !!!… Expand

They gave full credit to the original creators of everything he did and how it worked with him and his relationship dynamics with each of them.
And, of course, many people believe that is why Lisa later married Michael Jackson. Undoubtedly, black music and culture was the heart of what made him succeed but his own soul and how he connected with music without consideration to skin color or the government's politics was genuine. He set a stage for a lot of rebellion at a time that was crucial in history. I fully recommend the film.… Expand

This movie is really well-made by resurrecting our G. O.A. T. and a.k.a. The King of Rock n Roll, Elvis Presley. A glimpse of Elvis Presley's life is narrated from his childhood until his death. As a US foreigner, I didn't know a lot about him except in movies and people's reference. Thanks to this movie, at least I know about him better.

This movie really highlights Elvis's struggle at every moment of his life. Thanks to this movie production team, especially the director. Director's choice seems perfectly made to decide Austin Butler as Elvis Presley. His physical look and voice are seeming uncanny! I can't imagine if actually, Harry Styles was cast to play him. Maybe I could Imagine this singing scene "AS IT WAS ting ting ting ting, ting ting, ting ting ting ting..." lol *no offense. Besides that, I'm feeling so energized and nostalgic throughout this movie. It's felt so real and the vibes are so emotional. The only cons for this movie seem too long - almost 3 hr and I hope there's a more singing scene for a complete song.

Overall, I justify the greatness of Elvis Presley. Wowza! It's incredible knowing if he was with us! The emotions that I've been feeling until now are vintage vibes and hopeful. He is really hopeful and dreamer person through enigmatic charm. Make sure don't miss this movie at the cinema! I'm positive that this movie gonna be nominated for an Academy Award, especially Austin Butler's performance.… Expand

Unfortunately, we thought the movie was choppy.. too many flashbacks and way too long... Tom Hanks was super annoying..
Butler gave an excellent performance..more of Elvis’s music would have done the movie justice.

Even though the title of the movie heralds the biopic's famed subject, this examination of Presley's life and career is told thru the eyes of his notorious manger Col. Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). First off, Austin Butler nails The King in style, attitude and movement (only weird thing, no lip sneer). He's especially charismatic when he channels Presley on stage (lip syncing to Elvis' vocals). As Parker, Hanks transforms his look and moves with assurance, but didn't capture that magnetism that made The Colonel a great "snowman." Since Baz Luhrmann directed, there's plenty of showy camerawork, splashy editing and thrilling musical numbers. At 2:39 it never drags. Even so, the emotion doesn't gather much steam and some areas of Presley's life are skimmed over. Whether you appreciate Elvis, his career or his music, this film presents The King in a flashy, fascinating package.… Expand

Felt endless. Even though Baz Luhrmann's style remains palpable, "Elvis" still is your typical music biopic. The movie is saved by a wonderful Austin Butler, unique editing and great concert scenes. The rest of it didn't quite appeal me.

I loved it!! Awesome cast, acting, directing and soundtrack! Austin Butler gave an Oscar worthy performance as Elvis. Tom Hanks was also amazing. This movie is breathtaking, especially if you are an Elvis fan. I will see it again.

Ok I admit: I'm a Baz Luhrmann fan and an Elvis fan. This director is the perfect match to bring the flashy and colorful universe of the King to the screen. Even if this film would have benefited from being a little shorter, it was obviouslyOk I admit: I'm a Baz Luhrmann fan and an Elvis fan. Baz's type of movies worked well with Elvis. I had doubts after first 30mins or so... but, it really gets going well. Very enjoyable w/ lots of upbeat times, a few comic moments and a pretty good documentation of how everyone - everyone -Baz's type of movies worked well with Elvis. Elvis would seem to be not a big deal but in reality it manages to be for me a great gift for elvis from heaven, an acceptable script and the great work Austin Butler manages to feel like another excellent song by the artist

Ignoring the long run time this movie is almost perfect, never ever have I been so fascinated by the story of Elvis Presley, the acting is on A whole new level lead mostly by Austin Butler as the king of rock and roll. 9 out of 10!

Elvis is the most exciting biopic I have seen by far and I've seen most of them. Baz Luhrmann is a genius and I don't usually like his mad fast style but this is a little calmer than his usual films. Austin Butler Embodies Elvis, this has to be an Oscar-winning performance.

Don't expect it to be a totally accurate, run-of-the-mill biopic, they have become so stale and boring, go in with an open mind to be totally entertained and this is the movie to do that. EPIC movie, EPIC EXPERIENCE!… Expand

I would insist anyone watching this movie watch two clips of the real Elvis online first: Suspicious Minds live in 1970 and The 1968 medley. Austin nails it. The story is obviously very well known and some critics have called out Baz for not providing us with brand new, unknown insights. But with someone as famous as Elvis that is close to impossible to do. This man is arguably the most famous person to ever walk the planet, you would struggle to find new enlightening information. Just enjoy the storyline, enjoy the music, enjoy the raw passion and feeling that Austin puts into it because this movie is fantastic. At the end of the movie, despite its 160 minute runtime, I wish It was 20 minutes longer just because I was enjoying the music so much. When it is available on streaming services or DVD I will be watching it and then rewinding it to certain scenes, mainly the 1968 scene because that is just tantalising to watch. A few factual inaccuracies in the movie, but truthfully they don't impact the story too much. They're done to keep the runtime down more than anything, otherwise they'd have to introduce a whole new scene that gives us insights of a waiter called Mario for example. They've not included his story in the movie so they've had to edit a certain scene so it doesn't confuse the audience. But you'll understand why when you see it. Everything else is perfect. This movie at a minimum should win Oscars for set design, costume design, hair and makeup, sound editing. And perhaps best actor should be considered as a bare minimum too for Austin because he has put everything into this role and it really shows. 10/10… Expand

Honestly the best movie I’ve ever seen. The music, colours, EVERYTHING. I’m about to go watch it for a FOURTH time. Austin butler EMBODIED Elvis. This is a MUST SEE. Yes it’s a 2 hr 30 min movie but it’s so worth it!!!

Geat biopic. The main actor Butler kills it. It's just as if you were looking at Elvis himself. Tom Hanks does a great ole too. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommendable. I only wish songs were heard from start to finish without any cuts.

I am always critical of biopics, as I am a stickler for as much accuracy and authenticity as possible, with very little cinematic license. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed this creative effort. The performances were spot on as each actor provided genuine representation, showing true interest in exhibiting as much of the authentic character as possible. Some may feel it is sligtly to long, but I feel it was necessary to capture all the essential elements of Elvis. See this movie if you enjoy true authentic biopics. I believe that the film really presents Elvis Presley's influences, how he got his stardom, and how Colonel exploited him. Austin Butler could have one of the best performances of this year. I’m usually not a Baz Luhrmann fan but his style and the high energy of a man like Elvis work almost perfectly together. This is what a movie like Bohemian Rhapsody should have been. This is what a movie like Bohemian Rhapsody should have been. This takes the grandeur of a man like Elvis and the energy of Baz Luhrmann and you get this. Luhrmann’s style can still be annoying here in regards to some of the editing and the use of modern music for a movie that takes place between 40-70 years ago. The editing works most of the time but there are definitely scenes where it can start to feel a little nauseating. The ending also turns into your standard biopic with the real life footage and after screen text and all that but the rest of the film is great. Austin Butler is absolutely amazing here. One of my favorite performances of the year so far. He gets the mannerisms and singing of Elvis almost down to a T. His singing scenes especially were some of my favorite moments in the film especially when he sings “If I can Dream”. That’s my favorite scene in the film. Tom Hanks was kind of a mixed bag for me. Sometimes his over the top performance and accent worked and other times it was distracting but it isn’t the worst thing in the world. I will say though that I could barely recognize that Tom Hanks was playing the character. The energy of this film and the visuals are great. The energy keeps me from getting bored. Any other director would have made this film boring but Luhrmann used that energy to make boring scenes really interesting and engaging. The musical segments themselves are incredibly well done. Elvis’s first singing scene in the film is great. I already mentioned the “If I Can Dream” song and anything relating to the Vegas Hotel was very well done as well. The music is obviously great and even some of the more modern songs are good when they aren’t attached to the film. The film definitely isn’t historically accurate and they do gloss over some of the more controversial aspects about him. They don’t ignore them but they don’t dive deep into them which I wish they had done. If you like musical biopics or you want something different out of the biopic genre along with being an Elvis or Baz Luhrmann fan then I definitely would recommend checking this out.… Expand

The part that actually got me was the actual Elvis footage of him singing Unchained Melody. Belting it out at the very end, robbed of his fortune, a slave to his fame, with no one truly at his side. Like most Baz Luhrmann movies, Elvis does some things very well that make it an enjoyable watch, but it is bogged down by forced style, odd directorial choices, and questionable editing (or lack thereof). The style of the film is bombastic and Elvis' music, remixed or otherwise, is showcased with a huge burst of energy, although the sweeping shots and editing tricks get very tiring after a while and detract from the emotional stakes at hand. Austin Butler's performance as the titular character is spectacular and most of the other performances are good, except from, shockingly, the actor you would think would be the best performer: Tom Hanks. His Colonel Tom Parker performance is laughably bad and arguably the worst of his career. The directorial choice to tell the story from Parker's perspective rather than Elvis' or even a family member's perspective is just head scratching, as Parker is detestable throughout the film and he occupies just as much if not more screen time than Elvis. I applaud the risk, but this choice definitely frustrates the audience more and more as the film drags on as Parker becomes more and more hatable. Speaking of that, the film is way too long, clocking in at over 2 hours and 30 minutes, while also rushing through the prime of Elvis' career to focus on his sad downfall, which creates major pacing issues and leaves behind the fun side of Elvis' music that would've fit Baz's style. Overall, Elvis is about on par with the rest of Luhrmann's works, which means it has its moments, but has some truly head scratching flaws and directorial choices that drag the film down from being anything more than okay.… Expand

It's Elvis Presley's turn to get the musical biopic treatment here. His long and storied life is covered quite extensively in this epic of a film (clocking in at nearly 2 and three quarter hours long), is full of glitz and glamor in true Baz Luhrman fashion, (who also dazzled us with 'Moulin Rouge' and 'The Great Gatsby') and details everything from his extensive touring, his troubled and tragic personal life/marriage, and his financial abuse at the hands of his manager Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks in a rather hammy and prosthetic -heavy performance). Stepping into the shoes of the legendary rock n roll singer is Austin Butler, who is without a doubt the primary reason to check this film out, as he completely loses himself within Elvis. From his near-identical resemblance to the singer to performing his own singing and sounding exactly like him, he will rightfully be the high standard from here on out to which all other Elvis impersonators are compared to or aspire to live up to. As for the story itself, while it is standard biopic formula, the narration from the Colonel throughout adds a unique and fun touch to things, and Elvis's story is so extensively detailed that it's hard not to be impressed by the end result, along with the level of detail and production value that only enhances his story even further. But overall, besides being just another musical biopic (which it is), it's still a worthy addition to the ever-growing list of musical biopics thanks largely in part to Butler's magnetic and committed performance, along with the dazzling production value that's unmistakably Baz Luhrman. However, director Baz Luhrmann's latest is a solid, reverential, if a bit uneven, offering about the King of Rock 'n Roll. True to the filmmaker's characteristic glitzy, high-gloss cinematic style, "Elvis" is decidedly cut from the same cloth as earlier works like "Strictly Ballroom" (1992) and the remake of "The Great Gatsby" (2013), featuring stunning (if at times somewhat overdone) visuals and production values. Admittedly, the film safely covers mostly familiar ground about Presley's life and career, presenting few revelations or new insights into the music icon. Yet it also places greater emphasis on certain elements compared to other depictions, such as his largely overlooked concerns about social justice issues and his efforts to create wider awareness of African-American music and artists. It also delves more deeply into his relationship with dubious manager Colonel Tom Parker (a somewhat miscast Tom Hanks), whose story is given nearly equal treatment to that of the protagonist. But the balance between these dual plot threads isn't always balanced as well as it might have been. Also, some aspects of Presley's life are given noticeably short shrift, such as his loving but often-stormy marriage to wife Priscilla and his struggles with substance abuse. Nevertheless, for a film with a 2:40:00 runtime, it's remarkably well paced (save for a little sagging in the middle) and never loses viewer attention, thanks in large part to its energetic and vivid visuals. The real standout here, though, is the fine breakout, award-worthy performance of Austin Butler in the lead role, who imbues his take on the character with respectful credibility and successfully avoids making this well-known persona look like a caricature of himself, something that would be easy to do in lesser hands. In short, this release may not be the silver screen epic it aspires to be, but it's a fine way to spend a weekend afternoon at the theater, one that's certainly better than much of what this year's summer movie season has produced thus far.… Expand

A phenomenal portrayal of one of the greatest entertainers ever lived. Austin Butler brings Elvis to life and lets the viewer feel his emotions. Butler is a great actor and does a good job, but it's impossible for anyone to project the sheer magnitude of Elvis's charisma. Good movie, but requires a bit of suspension of disbelief.

A beautifully made film, made me wish I had more eyes on my face so I could see so much of the detail put in. Austin Butler is a triumph and has made a strong case for Best Actor at the Oscars, and hopefully we can see more of him on our screens for years to come. Costuming was otherworldly and made me wish I owned a bedazzler. Bravo.… Expand

So, I'm pretty sure the only reason "Elvis" exists is because a producer watched "Rocketman" and thought that Baz Lehrman would be perfect to replicate that dreamlike frenzy. Whatever "Elvis" started off as in someone's mind, the end resultSo, I'm pretty sure the only reason "Elvis" exists is because a producer watched "Rocketman" and thought that Baz Lehrman would be perfect to replicate that dreamlike frenzy. Whatever "Elvis" started off as in someone's mind, the end result is a total dumpster fire. It looks like it was shot as a completely traditional music bio-pic, and then had a bunch of zany chyrons plastered on top of it to try to give the impression that creativity was put into this mess. Where "Rocketman" had exquisitely choregraphed music segments, "Elvis" just shows a performer on stage and rapidly scans the camera around the audience to attempt to give the impression of excitement. It would be one thing if the camera was steady and just tried to show a concert ala "Bohemian Rhapsody", but "Elvis" seems like it really wants you to think there is some elevated concept happening on top of the action, but all that is happening is that the camera is panning around quickly, with no notable choreography. If you want a by the numbers music bio-pic, "Bohemian Rhapsody" will meet your needs better, but for the far superior dream-like experience, stick with "Rocketman".… Expand

The fantastic cast, high production value and great soundtrack push through the 2.5 HR runtime. Otherwise, the film jumps from one event to another, and for those who are not familiar with the career of Elvis Presley, it will be very difficult to understand all the events. Adds to all this a lot of not really needed dialogues and because of what the film is very stretched out, but showed very little. Baz Luhrmann's Elvis is not what could accurately be described as a biopic, especially for concentrating its narrative on an unreliable narrator like Colonel Tom Parker, though I must say that focusing on the puppeteer of one of the greatestBaz Luhrmann's Elvis is not what could accurately be described as a biopic, especially for concentrating its narrative on an unreliable narrator like Colonel Tom Parker, though I must say that focusing on the puppeteer of one of the greatest music figures of all time presented plot possibilities for which Lurhmann, unfortunately, lacks the necessary subtlety.

That's perhaps one of the most conflicting elements of this film; its own struggle between the grandiosity of its staging and what clearly needed a more nuanced treatment.
What is presented is a mix that comes out quite well, but doesn't manage to become the epic it promised it would be.

Baz Lurhmann is too well known for favoring style over substance, and although here he was more restrained and had to keep things more grounded because Elvis was a real person and couldn't take so many liberties, his visual approach gives his film a distinct personality, which his script fails to achieve to a greater extent, but I would find it highly inaccurate to say he did things carelessly, because the good quality is there.

Speaking of the performances. Of those that I really have to mention, first is Tom Hanks who's very good in a role that makes him a detestable figure, but the one who deserves all the recognition is Austin Butler who is stunning in his role as Elvis.

He really went all the way and delivers a performance that under any other circumstances would have earned him an Oscar nomination without a problem.
This is a role that will define his career for years to come, even if he doesn't do better after it. It's all up to him. He's already made clear that he has talent to do so, and considering his credits so far, with this film and that he will also be part of Dune Part Two, it goes without saying that the doors are now wide open for him to take off. Only time will tell.

Now concluding I have to say that whether you like what Lurhmann does or not, I am of the opinion that you should see this film.… Expand

One of those movies where you have to sit there with the remote in your hand cause the film’s audio goes from whisper quiet to sudden booming loudness! THAT was extremely annoying, but otherwise not a bad biopic. Austin Butler is amazing (so is Hanks) and the film is breathtaking. The layering of the music, and mixing the past with the present moved me to tears multiple times.
