Honestly an honorable ending to Breaking bad. It shows what Pinkman has been through and how his character has evolved. A certain flashback scene really answered a lot about Pinkman, loved that.

When i say after though, it really only applies to 60% of the movie, as there are quite a bit of flashbacks.

Jessie Pinkman, scarred and traumatized by his imprisonment, has to find a way to hide and run away. As a known partner to the greatest meth empire kingpin called Heisenberg, he has to find a way to start anew, and that requires money. Thus the thrilling escape begins.

While the scenes regarding present day events are immersive and get you on the edge of your seat, the flashbacks take away a lot of the tension. Characters are brought back in a rather contrived way, as their scenes don't change anything about the present day story. It also doesn't help that the original actors have aged or changed a lot, breaking immersion with the show a lot. Todd has suddenly gained a 100 pounds, and went from looking like a guy in his twenties to a fat middle aged guy. Bryan Cranston also makes an appearance, though his aging is too noticeable and his presence too forced and unnecessary. Why can't the movie stand on its own without having to use the characters from the show other than those who are truly integral to the story?

In the end, Jessie Pinkman finds his chance to start fresh and walk away from his tormented past. For years i wondered what would happen to him, and i'm glad El Camino wrapped up his story. Unfortunately, i feel like much of this movie is fan fiction considering all the unnecessary flashbacks. Hadn't these been forced in, it could have been a worthy sequel to Breaking Bad. Nonetheless, It is a good movie, i give it a 7/10.

I would say that this movie didn't really have to exist, we got a pretty good ending with Jesse in BB and it was mostly up to interpretation as to what would happen next. With this movie it doesn't take anything away from BB so that's good, but what I suggest is do not watch it straight after BB since the actors returning look much older in what was only supposed to be a few seconds after the show ended. Some haven't aged a bit, others it's pretty obvious. As a standalone, this movie has no bearing so don't listen to the creators saying it is. As a part of the show, I'd say it holds up if you can suspend your disbelief a bit to accept the actors are older and the main character of BB is gone and this is solely about Jesse. I feel what lacks is you don't get much of a rundown of who Jesse was in BB before all the crazy, heartbreaking stuff happened. So just watching the movie, you don't really feel the impact of why he is so broken, even if, like me, you gave the show a watch hours before the movie came out it's a little jarring, like if Aaron Paul isn't even playing Jesse Pinkman. However, a second time around, I was able to appreciate it a lot more and even change my score here from a 4 to a 7. I really didn't want this movie to pick up right where they left off in BB I think even letting a few years pass in the context of the show, you could still write a story about Jesse Pinkman running from the law as we see with BCS with Saul Goodman years later still constantly in danger of being caught. Still that was their decision and it does hinder the experience a bit but overall as a BB fan there is alot to like here. Watch it, it's a good bit of closure to Jesse Pinkman if you really weren't satisfied seeing him just drive off in the OG ending to BB. Expand

The look-backs are decent and there are some cool scenes here and there. Unfortunately the plot overall is quite thin and often almost dull.
We are introduced to characters who were part of the original show. Some were memorable enough that you recall what they did and in those cases it plays well into El Camino's story. But a big emphasis is also put on lesser known characters that I couldn't remember at all. The movie does try to remind us slightly. But ultimately it wastes too much time trying to make us dislike them enough that we don't loose interest in the plot they are part of. And that's when things start falling slightly apart. I simply didn't care enough about it to keep me interested.
So basically it's a fan service movie more than anything else. It simply wraps up Jesse's story. And it does so fairly well.

Breaking Bad was nearly flawless for its first three seasons. While it never recovered from a serious misstep in season four, it still soared on occasion. While Paul shows every day of the six years that have passed, he lifts the proceedings enough to please the hard-core "Captain Cook" fans. Those not blind to the series' shortcomings, or unfamiliar with what all the fuss was about, will not be moved to go back and binge. The one flashback scene with Brian Cranston is all the reminder needed as to why Breaking Bad was so good, even when the story-line grew uneven. Expand

still, this film serves its purpose wonderfully, and there's nothing wrong with it, it was beautifully shot and acted, it just didn't scratch my itch.

Otherwise, when the writers shout "Fetch!" one last time while offering this lukewarm, re-heated stew of old, now slightly suspicious looking ingredients, much fewer people would actually bother to move. There is nothing inherently terrible on the formula - wrap up Jesse Pinkman in three layers of plot armor, and let him do silly things one last time. He is the kid with the heart, and we all feel for him. However, there is no substance in the plot - everything has been already said, there is really nothing to add, and even though the characters seem like doing their "thing" one last time, it's lifeless action like a dead frog being animated by a sudden jolt of electricity. Unfortunately, the impulse quickly wears off, so we are stuck with an unnecessary, melancholic meandering over what we already knew. If this film did not exist, the original series (Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul) would not miss anything worth seeing, on the contrary - it dilutes the whole experience, bringing a foul aftertaste that was originally not present. Strictly a fan service, and maybe a nostalgia trip for the actors that wanted to perhaps revisit a bright point in their career. Expand

I was transfixed from beginning to end. I loved the characters and development. I was a huge Breaking Bad fan so that it was perhaps easier for me to follow all the achronus scenes.

I wouldn't call it a complaint, but not much happens over its duration. You see a lot of scenes, especially for the first half of the film, which seem episodic. It comes off feeling like an indie film rather than a drama or action movie. I liked it that way; it doesn't feel like most movies now, and that's mostly why I haven't watched a movie in five months. In any case, by the end of the film I think all the little stories have come together to explain Jesse's motivation and what to feel about him.

I thought it was a very good, motivating movie. It's a fun drama to watch and captivating. Maybe it's more for a Breaking Bad fan and someone who's not expecting some kind of modern movie that's going to mean something to the viewer outside the context of Breaking Bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, what a way to spoil one of the best TV shows out there. Now it was clear from the start that there is zero point in making this movie apart from its creators making more money, but I didn't expect it to be this bad.

Basically, the entire film is dedicated to pathetic humiliation of Pinkman, both in past and present. For example, in the past, it is shown that he is so worthless that he couldn't make his escape when literally handed a gun. In the present, he's so lowly he steals from his poor parents. I never liked Pinkman's character in the original show, but the El Camino version reached new heights in making him unlikable. Moreover, he is different from his BB show version. I mean, once given the chance, he straggles Todd in the final episode with no remorse, but in this insult of a movie, he breaks down in tears and says he likes Pepperoni pizza when given an opportunity to shoot him with no witnesses around. Really painful to watch.

There's a bunch of fan service with various cameos, but a lot of references didn't even work for me, as the show ended what, 6 years ago, and I don't remember all the plot details.

Season 5 of Breaking Bad was a largely unnecessary epilogue, as season 4 wrapped things up nicely, but it ended up having some of the best episodes of the entire show. This, however, is a shameless spit in the face of the audience. If you hold any good memories of Breaking Bad, do yourself a favor and skip this.

Most of the extreme 0 and 1 downvotes are coming from people who see Breaking Bad as a masterpiece that should never be touched again. The film has excellent cinematography, a great soundtrack and superb acting but once the movie was over I felt it was just a bunch of set up for something else. If it were the beginning for a series or a film series I would be stoked and excited but I just felt a bit lost as to why this exists, that's it? No more? by the time the credits rolled I just felt completely unsatisfied. It's not a bad movie, it's just an unnecessary one. Expand

Expand

El Camino or Jesse the film. Great Breaking Bad experience in film format, which is "only" good not outstanding.

Aaron Paul aka Jesse Pinkman is rightly the protagonist of the film because he delivers a great performance. Acting at a very high level, on the other hand, the narrative structure of the film is unfortunately too simple, sometimes lengthy. Many flashbacks accompany the film, which is a bit annoying in the end.

All in all, it's a worth seeing return to the breaking bad story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This contains spoilers. El Camino tries to add contexts to what happened to Jesse after and near the end of breaking bad as well as flashbacks. It seemed like a good idea because we didn’t get much from Jesse perspective the last 5 episodes of breaking bad (and this is coming from someone Me who wasn’t a big fan of Jesse the character). Now the movie itself I felt didn’t add much to the breaking bad universe/ overall story. Jesse friends are on in only 10 mins of the movie ( they literally disappear after) there’s no mention / appearance of skyler, Walt jr, the boy who got poisoned( can’t remember his name), Saul, etc. We didn’t get to see the impact of hanks death on the police department and the family, etc.We get kinda this forced in plot where Jesse is on a quest to find Money. It didn’t make much sense because if I recall back in season 5 I believe it was episode 6 or 7, (b4 he got captured) Jesse was giving/ throwing drug money away to random people, completely demotivated and on this all of a sudden in this he’s super motivated to get the drug money again. He’s even more emotionally broken/ demotivated after he got captured. That’s kinda a continuity issue. As for the pacing it’s not bad, acting is top notch , I appreciated the flashbacks, and seeing old faces. Great dialogue. But at times I felt like woow is that all? this is supposed to be connected to The breaking bad one of the best shows ever. I finished the movie feeling empty, like it needed more. But I guess they couldn’t really do much more because by the end of the series basically all of the big drug dealing characters are dead, so not much could’ve been added if u look at it from that perspective. Which is a problem u get when running into aftermath spin offs, you can’t add much if the story from the tv show or prequel is basically already told. Expand

I'm happy we got a definitive ending for Jesse Pinkman and I enjoyed the ride for two hours. I feel this was an appropriate run time and format for this as well. A series would have been too much and a release in theaters would have been gratuitous. I was entertained throughout and it was nice to revisit characters I've enjoyed watching for so long with a story that was engaging and surprising at times. Obviously give this a watch if you're BB fan. Expand

Aaron Paul yet again brings his A-game to the character of Jessie in a new chapter of his life, where he begins to be a lot smarter with his actions and a much calmer and remorseful person. Vince Gilligan also does a great job as a first time director of a feature with interesting cinematography and a good pace and rhythm. None of the actors had really aged since the finale episode of Breaking Bad to the point that it became distracting except maybe for Jesse Plemons whose gained a bit of weight since then so that was a bit confronting (especially after seeing the Breaking Bad Recap Netflix plays before the film).

So yeah, El Camino is certainly a must watch for Breaking Bad fans and could defiantly still be enjoyed by people who haven’t even seen the show although they wouldn’t get the same amount of fulfilment by any means. Check it out gang, it’s on Netflix right now it’s not that hard.

El Camino was neither better nor equal to Breaking Bad as you can't surpass perfection. Breaking Bad is undoubtedly the best or at least one of the best TV series of all time.

This doesn't mean that movie was bad. It shows Jesse's final fate. Everything was same as the show; great cinematography, great acting and great direction. It however has slow pacing and movie could have been shorter. Overall, it has impact on you just like the series and should watch it after you finish the series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. a very quiet crime movie with an unreluctant protagonist. did not catch the breaking bad series but was a fan of bryan cranston. though he only cameo in this show, was surprised to see the understated 'jesse plemons'. he gave the show an aura of impending tensed consequence which i always appreciate. loved the way he lipsynced in the car. who else could have done it better.
the movie had a clint eastwood righteous feel to it and a certain sense of comedic downplay to muffle the overused money in the fridge plot.
watch for jesse plemons and the darkly handsome brooding main actor.

For the first 15 minutes I was hooked but as the movie went on I found the pacing too slow and the events kind of meaningless. It didn't make sense for Jesse to steal from his parents instead of at least saying a final goodbye. Also, Todd was very insufferable in the last season and had no personality whatsoever and his presence only worsened the film. I would've liked to see some of the more likeable characters that were still alive, not only Jesse's friends.
