I think it combines a drama movie with a thriller movie in a perferct form, you can find some emotive and happy sequences, on the other side some horrible and dramatic sequences, everything is the performance of Johny Depp

One thing that I really liked about EdwardOther films that are genuinely moving are The Elephant Man, Fearless and Camille. Edward Scissorhands is a film of darkness and beauty, that makes it such a wonderful and unique film to see. One thing that I really liked about Edward Scissorhands was the music score by Danny Elfman, which was very beautiful, sensitive and mysterious. A good example is in the beginning credits, with the angelic choir accompanying the Christmas-like images on screen. The cinematography was gorgeous, with bright imaginative close-ups contrasted with genuinely Gothic scenes, like when we first meet Edward in the dark house. The script, while not the strongest category of the film, was still very touching, and added to the charm and suspense that was already ensured in the film. The direction by Tim Burton had all his trademarks, very dark and suspenseful, evident in films like Batman and Sleepy Hollow, if a little odd at times, which is fairly typical of Burton. While there were one or two funny moments, the film is genuinely poignant, with a heart-rending ending. I will say I was most impressed with the acting, topped by Johnny Depp's tragic and poignant portrayal of the title character, and then Winona Ryder as Kim, while not quite as convincing is still very sensitive. I was shocked that Depp didn't get an Oscar for his performance, he doesn't say much, but his facial expressions fully justify. There was also sterling support from Dianne West, Kathy Baker et al, while Vincent Price in a minor role as the inventor also impresses, such a shame he died three years later, he was a brilliant actor, if you see him as the truly Machiavellian villain in Great Mouse Detective, or the sadistic Matthew Hopkins in Witchfinder General, you'll know what I mean. As I have already said, the ending is so heart-rending, that I will confess I got through half'a box of tissues. Overall, a remarkably beautiful and poignant film that had me speechless. My advice to anyone who hasn't seen it, and is planning to, have a box of tissues at the ready, it is that sad. 10/10 Bethany Cox. Expand

OH MY GOSH! This was the WORST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN!!! And I'm not just saying that... I've seen my fair share of bad movies, but 'Edward Scissorhands' was literally the WORST OF ALL! The title itself practically OH MY GOSH! This was the WORST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN!!! And I'm not just saying that... I've seen my fair share of bad movies, but 'Edward Scissorhands' was literally the WORST OF ALL! The title itself practically gives away the whole dull plot of this terrible movie, and I must say that I have absolutely no idea why a man with Johnny Depp's talents would resort to acting in it, and why anyone would like this trash... Why is the user rating on metacritic so high!? 'Edward Scissorhands' is another work of utter garbage from a most dreadful director/screenwriter in Tim Burton, who has not as of yet (and most likely never will) created a movie that is enjoyable to watch in the slightest. How can he still be allowed to write and direct movies for Hollywood, and how can anyone possibly bear to give him any compliments for his works of complete and utter crap!? The first time I watched 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' (the original) I wasn't particularly impressed, but after watching Tim Burton's feeble attempt at it (why was Johnny Depp in this one as well? Does he feel sorry for Burton or are they so closely related that his parents won't let him refuse his offers or something), I thought of the original as quite a masterpiece. I like randomness, in fact I think it brings in an amusing factor that is often needed in a movie, but Tim Burton's 'random' just adds more boring to his already tedious and nonsensical story-lines. Wasn't Beetlejuice supposed to be a comedy/horror movie...? Those are the best two combination to keep a viewer interested, but I actually fell asleep after just 15 minutes... ...and I'd gotten 14 hours sleep the night before!!! What made 'Edward Scissorhands' all the worse for me was that, after viewing it at school (I would never have watched it otherwise), our whole English class had to explore into the movies' depths and find out how it was made and how different stupid things had hidden meanings (things that Tim Burton himself probably didn't even think about when writing it). Delving into the movie itself did nothing to make me enjoy it any more, in fact it made the dreary experience just as bad as when I watched it in the first place (I mean it couldn't possibly get any worse!), it just took a hell of a lot longer to get through. So overall, 'Edward Scissorhands', worst movie ever, pointless plot, overly colorful, completely unfunny, totally unrealistic (which ties in with my last point, if the unrealism had a little humor it would have been okay, but scissorhands...? Scissorhands!? That's like something a Primary School Child would think is cool, until they GROW UP!!!), awfully directed and written (I hate you Tim Burton!), and even completely disgusting at times (what was that woman doing to Depp in the back room?). I wouldn't recommend this atrocity of a film to anyone with at least half a brain. Expand

A film that only Burton could make, his direction is as sound as usual and he manages to evoke considerable sympathy for this tragic figure who is, otherwise, a normal man but cursed to live his days with scissors as hands. Johnny Depp does a great job bringing this man to life and brings a certain tenderness and has fantastic chemistry with Winona Ryder when it comes to the romantic element of the film. The writing is incredibly strong and, together with Burton's direction, keeps this one reined in and keeps it from getting out of control when it easily could have with such a crazy premise. The characters are well developed and truly multi-dimensional. Edward Scissorhands' portrayal of suburban life also feels delightfully and quintessentially late 80s, early 90s and really serves as a perfect backdrop for the introduction of such a weird and unique person. Though I may be one of the few to have never seen Edward Scissorhands, it is truly timeless and will live on for a long, long time due to its fairy tale and thematic elements that really are universal and its ability to be both unique, yet incredibly stirring, tragic, and moving. This one is Tim Burton at his very finest. Expand

When I think of modern Burton I tend to think of very drab, heavily CG’d, washed out looking films that tend to oversell on the “dark and whimsical” style that he was once a pioneer of. It’s such a shame that I dread seeing any new movie of his because I know, deep down, that he still has the potential of creating great, fantastical films. When I think of Tim Burton, I think fondly of the days of Batman ’89, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood and, most personally, Edward Scissorhands. It’s a film I grew up watching as a kid on my mom’s laserdisc. I was intrigued by the look of the film, the music, and Edward himself. It had been many years since I have seen this movie to completion, and as an adult I have been able to gain a newfound appreciation for it. The story follows the titular Edward Scissorhands, a lonely, incomplete creation of a professor (played by Vincent Price) who is discovered by local suburban saleswoman Peg Boggs. Feeling sympathy for Edward, she takes him back to her home in a suburban neighborhood filled with incredibly nosey housewives that are smitten by this mysterious person. Edward quickly finds a place for himself, creating hedge art for the people and even as their hair stylist. Edward also falls for Peg’s daughter Kim, who is uncertain of Edward at first but slowly starts to care for him. The whole movie plays out like a gothic fairytale (it helps that the story is being told as a bedtime story), and the movie positively drips with Burton’s signature style. Edward’s intimidating presence heavily contrasts with the uniform, pastel-colored suburban neighborhood. He epitomizes the types of characters Burton tends to gravitate towards: the misunderstood misfit that may look strange, but is a gentle soul. Danny Elfman’s fantastic score helps to sell the film’s gothic fairytale feel, perfectly encapsulating Edward’s mood and state of mind in any given situation. The suburban neighbors are appropriately nosey, immediately infatuated with Edward but just as quickly are able to turn on him the second he makes a mistake. This would be the first of many collaborations between Burton and Johnny Depp, and this was a damn strong start. Depp is great in this film, perfectly capturing the innocence and awkwardness that Edward displays. Winona Ryder is great as Kim, and I even liked Anthony Michael Hall as Kim’s dirt bag boyfriend Jim. Everyone in the film is great, for that matter, even Vincent Price for as little screen-time as he gets portrays the same level of kindness that Edward carries over. Of course, I can’t forget to mention Stan Winston’s fantastic make-up and scissor effects for Depp. Edward’s look has become iconic and still unique among the rest of Burton’s catalogue. There only a few gripes I have with the film, like people for some reason not immediately helping him with basic tasks that he obviously can’t do with scissor hands. It’s usually played up for comedic affect but the entire time I couldn’t help but say, “Help him already!” These gripes are minor in the grand scheme of things, though. As far as discussing Tim Burton’s filmography is concerned, this easily in the top 5 in my opinion. Everything you need to know about him is on display in Edward Scissorhands. After all these years, I still think this movie is wonderful and it absolutely comes recommended not just for fans of Tim Burton, but just for being a good, well-rounded movie. Expand

Johnny Depp with a great performance, his Edward ist very sad and with low self confidence, a sympathetic character.
The story is sad also and a bit unrealistic, but intentionally exaggerated, like a fairy tale. So dont take everything seriously. But the bottom line about the bourgeois is clear and surely true.
The art design was a master piece earlier, today every film lover knows Tim Burton.

While I liked Edward, I didn't like the other characters. They were there and they had some soul in them, but it didn't feel like the movie focused on them at all. I felt like Edward was the only character that really had a personality and he was the only one that I cared for. Johnny Depp was really good, and the acting overall felt alright from the whole cast, and many scenes were fun to watch. But I didn't feel that invested in the world. Maybe I was just thinking the wrong way or I don't know.. Expand

Edward scissor hands might just be Tim Burtons best film mainly because of its themes of being different and ambient visual style and musical score and like many other Tim burton flicks the cast is great.

Each time I watch this movie, I love it more. A true cinematic masterpiece. I cry all the way through. I think that it speaks to the teenager in us all and touches on some emotions we rarely look at on our own.

The whole film is always the same, the feeling that is supposed to make you feel for the character, the "not being accepted" issue, every human being has felt at least in some part of their lives...
The movie makes little to no sense and i cant realize what people really see in this movie, camera angles are not special...
The plot is so typical as the cheerleader falls in love with the unusual guy and then the "bad guy" american athletic teenager gets angry at the unusual character, and decides to hurt him because he feels as he is going to hurt the cheerleader, the only difference is the special touch of johnny depp´s acting, and also the fact that the unusual teenager, is an unfinished machine, but everything else goes by the book of these film´s genre

The well known story of Frankenstein re-made as fairy tale in charming vintage environment. A fable about tolerance, that put Johnny Depp under the spotlight. Pay attention for Vincent Price in his final performance.

Edward Scissorhands

It resembles with Disney cartoon features but the problem in here is that it is a real world and is probably one of the reasons why some of the sequences would be difficult to digest and would raise some questions that should not be. But as I said, Edward Scissorhands being somewhat similar to a Disney feature offers everything i.e. sketchy and shady characters, peculiar world and amusing perspectives. Tim Burton still lacks a better execution as he fails convincing the audience that it is all "real" or even the accept the stills that are projected. But if he fails, Johnny Depp has got his back and not only does he convince them but makes them feel for the character; he is flat out amazing but needs a better supporting cast. Edward Scissorhands scores majestically in pouring out emotions on screen through stellar performances and brilliant writing but unfortunately could not deliver the perfect execution and editing that it deserved.

Because of this, Edward has big scissors instead of fingers and a strange looking, almost industrial. But he ends up being found amid the ruins of the mansion where he was born and taken to a suburban neighborhood, where life is always the same, made of perfection appearances. Directed by Tim Burton, has a screenplay by Caroline Thompson and counts on the participation of Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder.

This film is a modern Christmas tale and, for a decade, was very broadcast on televisions around this time of year. The story is very beautiful and touching, and makes us think about issues such as the right to be different from others, the difference between being and seeming, the exaggerated importance we give to appearances and the little importance we give to what is genuine, and how our society corrupts what is naturally good (Rousseau revisited?). Despite it usually have a parental rating accessible to children, this film seems to have been designed for public since the age of ten. The cast is reasonable but not surprising, except for Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, actors who had, in this movie, the first major opportunity to shine, and where Depp inaugurated a long and fruitful partnership with Burton, which lasts until today. The photography and the visual effects are very good. The sets and costumes are interesting, helping to get the message proposed in the film, and the soundtrack is marked by the main theme, composed by Danny Elfman. This piece remained in the memory of the audience for its beauty and magic, becoming one of the most beautiful musical pieces made for film.

If nothing else, watch it for the soundtrack ... only Danny Elfman can write music that's beautiful, melancholic, hopeful, inspiring, and slightly creepy all at the same time. An amazing story that will warm your heart.

Very enjoyable.

It's funny the way we picture things in our minds. I had heard of 'Edward Scissorhands' but actually knew very little about it, typified by the fact I was expecting this to be very dark - probably just based on the seeing the cover here and there. It's much sillier than expected, but in a positive way.

I do kinda end up wishing they went down a more dark/creative route, instead of relying on the novelty of having scissors as hands; though, to be fair, they do touch on the deeper side a bit. With that said, I did get a good amount of entertainment seeing this plot unfold. It's weird and wonderful.

Johnny Depp is a great actor and is very good here, mainly via his facial expressions and body language. It's cool to see Winona Ryder involved, someone I've thoroughly enjoyed in more recent times in 'Stranger Things'. Alan Arkin and Anthony Michael Hall also appear.

The film looks neat, as I've come to expect from Tim Burton. It has the obvious touch of Bo Welch to it, with the neighbourhood looking not too dissimilar to what Welch would create for 2003's 'The Cat in the Hat' - which I, truly, enjoyed.

Undoubtedly worth a watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 'Edward Scissorhands' (1990) is a beautiful romantic, fantasy movie. The director, Tim Burton, paid close attention to the atmosphere of the movie, which makes it even more fascinating. Before this movie, his works included Beetlejuice (1988) and Batman (1989). The production of 'Edward Scissorhands' began with a budget of $20 million. The stars are Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, who perfectly suited their roles. Caroline Thompson worked on the script. She later went on to work as a screenwriter on "The Addams Family" (1991) and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993).

Edward was created by an inventor who before his death, had given him nearly everything a human body has, apart from hands. Instead of hands, Edward has scissors. He lived in the inventor's gothic house till Peg Boggs finds him once and brings him to her house and family. Since then, the lives of Edward, Peg's family and the whole city started to change.

'Edward Scissorhands' was a critically acclaimed movie, which may be as popular with the young audience as it is with older moviegoers. I guess everyone could find something special in this movie. Also, I'd like to mention the soundtrack, which was written by Danny Elfmann. It brilliantly underlines the beauty of this movie. This movie is not only a sensitive romantic story, but also a big question about how people sometimes hold prejudices that could easily harm someone else around them.

Depp's weird likability is at full force here and turns a movie with a story that is a bit off into a movie that is one of the best for it's time.
