It is actually almost as good as Vanilla Sky but as an Action Sci-Fi movie instead of Romantic Drama. I liked the concept. I have not read the manga so I cannot make any comparison of how they transitioned the manga into the movie. The ending of the movie suggest there will be a sequel and I hope it will be as bad-ass as the first installment. If no sequel is on the reworks then this movie is one of the most awesome Sci-Fi movies of 2015! I loved it. I watched it at the Cinema and watched once more at a friend's house. It is not as dull or repetitive as the trailer suggests it would be. The trailer in this case makes the movie seem worse than what it is. A great movie you should put on your must watch soon list. 9/10 from me. PS: Tom Cruise shows emotions in this movie like he did in Vanilla Sky. Expand

This movie is one of the biggest surprises of the last years and definitely not just "another Tom Cruise movie". Emily Blunt also gives a notable performance. "Edge of Tomorrow" is one of the best sci-fi hits of the 2010s.

"Edge of Tomorrow" introduces us to a futuristic reality, one where aliens have invaded Earth and have almost destroyed the human race. The story focuses on Major William Cage, an officer who has never seen a day of combat, and who is thrown into that reality. Killed within minutes of being in the battle field, Cage however is immersed in the alien creatures DNA, which grants him the capability of reliving the same day over and over. Reliving this day consecutively, allows him to meet Rita Vrataski, an experienced and phenomenal officer, who had the same power as he does (who lost it in the meantime). Together they both try to devise a way to reach the hive that commands all the invading alien creatures.
Doug Liman is a resourceful director, one who excels in story lines where the central character is usually completely unaware of their own potential and strength (which was the case of "The Bourne Identity" for instance). In this case, William Cage is the unaware hero, who by force of circumstances is forced to overcome his fears, and make a sacrifice to save humanity. The action set pieces flow seamlessly, and though huge in scope and ambition, the film never feels saturated by its visual effects (they allow for the action to be simultaneously realistic and futuristic). The actors are uniformly excellent, from Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, to the underrated Noah Taylor and Bill Paxton. The cinematography from Dion Beebe is also one of the highlights of the feature. A very entertaining film worth watching!

He wakes up back before the battle and discovers he's in a time loop, repeating the last few hours, each time getting better and closer to winning. Toss in a tough soldier (Emily Blunt), who understands his situation and provides the inevitable love interest. As action films go, this has some solid sequences and the enemy is OK. If you can ignore some glaring holes in the logic, you might find it an interesting and moderately skillful entertainment. Expand

This film also commits another sin by featuring creatures that are supposedly far more advanced and intelligent than we are but they are gross and cannot speak, they are just killing machines. But this idea of re-living the same day, even not entirely new, is implemented with imagination. Taking into account the movie's genre, the script is quite good and even funny. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tom Cruise puts in a strong performance in this smart action thriller. The beach attack scene is very reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan. Very chaotic and gory at times, and the mimic aliens are genuinely original and scary. Whenever they're on screen you feel a palpable sense of threat. The only downside is the ending, which I felt was a bit lame. If the mimics are so intelligent and deadly and are able to control time then how come their most important position was so easily infiltrated? Overall still a great film. Expand

In the 1993 film starring Bill Murray as the unfortunateComparisons to Groundhog Day are inevitable, for the same premise is in effect here. One man is doomed to live the same day and over and over until he achieves what he set out to do. In the 1993 film starring Bill Murray as the unfortunate protagonist caught in a cosmic loop, a supernatural force condemned him to repeat the day every time he went to sleep at night, for he was the victim of his own moral lassitude and his inability to feel any empathy for his fellow human beings. However, he falls in love with a journalist played by Andie MacDowell, who is an angel by comparison, and in order to win her, he has to change, and since he has only one weekend to woo her, the divine solution is to repeat the day countless times until he gets it right. As a result of the time warp afforded by this exercise in infinity, he learns to play the piano, he learns to speak fluent Italian, he becomes a skilled ice sculptor, and he learns to feel compassion for others. And then he gets the girl, and the time warp magically ends. Finally, he achieves his goal—to become morally perfect and to move on to the next day.

In Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise’s character, William Cage, is not the humorous and ironic character that Bill Murray plays, nor is his assignment to cover Punxsutawney Phil’s shadow on Groundhog Day. He is an army major who has been wrongly assigned to combat in a futuristic D-Day. This time the shores of Normandy are crawling with aliens, not Germans, and they are a hateful species of octopus-like creatures, known as Mimics, who come barreling along like whirling dervishes. They are controlled by a monster octopus, their Emperor, who acts as a universal consciousness. They can only be stopped if the Emperor dies.

Not having seen weaponry since basic training, Major Cage comes close to refusing his orders, finds himself accused of desertion and is then abducted and locked into a robot-style combat outfit on D-Day the Second. He is deployed against his will, and he immediately blunders, makes a wrong move, and he is killed on the beach, but not by one of the drone aliens—he is killed by a rare, superior Mimic whose blood imparts to Cage the ability to die and then wake up alive to start the day again. Each time he remembers the mistakes from the previous day, and each time he corrects himself and gets a little closer to his goal before stumbling and getting killed again.

The tension of reliving the same day in Edge of Tomorrow does not have the same level of variety and innovation that we saw in Groundhog Day. The plot is advanced by the need to save the world from an alien invasion. The lack of variety in the different scenarios is offset by Cage’s understanding of the predictable features he will encounter each time he wakes up after being killed. He learns how to handle the crewmates who think he is arrogant and who reject him for being woefully lacking in combat skills. He learns how to deal with the hard-as-nails drill sergeant (Bill Paxton) who has no respect for him and treats him with contempt. And he recognizes the renowned “Angel of Verdun,” Rita (Emily Blunt), a female soldier who somehow had mastered the art of killing Mimics, because she too had been infected with the blood of a Mimic, and she too reset the day each time she was killed, always learning from her mistakes—until one day, she was wounded but didn’t die, and a blood transfusion robbed her of her power. When she sees Cage on the battlefield, she recognizes his condition, and they join together. Whenever they reach the point where they fail, she kills him to reset the day and start over. And each time he has to reintroduce himself, make her understand who he really is, and try to advance a little further once again.

There are a few places in the film where the action lags, and although the chemistry between Cage and Rita is interesting, her complete lack of femininity as a soldier with an obsessive mission prevents any romance and renders her more mechanical and less human than she should have been. Nevertheless, Blunt delivers a powerful performance, and Cruise is masterful. The ending spells a deliverance that the viewer did not expect, and strong supportive roles by Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson (as the grouchy general who wants to destroy Cage’s pretty face) add layers of depth and nuance that the film might not have had otherwise. Tom Cruise is magnificent as he carries the entire film with ease, and he seems to be getting better with age.

This is a very solid movie. At one point, I was debating on giving it a 9. At one point, I was debating on giving it a 9. After many disappointing films this year, I would say this is easily the second best film of the year behind Captain America: Winter Soldier. The only reason this film doesn't get a perfect 10 is because some of the acting from the soldiers were poor, and the beginning and ending made no sense to me. Other than that, everything is top-notch! I loved how the movie was directed and written. I had to keep on guessing on when Tom Cruise's character was experiencing a scene for the first or the 100th time. Also, there was good humor in the film that had great timing and placed well in the story. I also really liked the design of the alien race. Those are some scary cool looking creatures that I would never want to meet. I would say that this film was on par with Minority Report, if you want to compare it with other Tom Cruise action films.

*BEGIN SPOILERS* Just because I want to mention the things that make no sense. The beginning. I don't clearly understand the general's motivations on sending Tom Cruise to the front lines of the war. Tom Cruise is pretty much the media spoke's person for the military, in which they're promoting their new infantry battle suits. At the beginning, you see Cruise's character getting interviewed and leading ads to say that anyone could wear one and pretty much kill tons of alien bad guys. Ok, so the general wants to send every abled body at the alien race, and he knows there's going to be a ton of casualties, which he will most likely be blamed for... so his plan is to order Tom Cruise to lead the charge, who has no combat experience. By doing this, Cruise will be blamed for the battle? That's doesn't make sense. If the general wants to make Cruise the bad guy, don't make him a martyr. He's already the poster child for the military. If he convinces millions to volunteer and fight the alien race through the media, then he's already going to be the first that's scrutinized... it is he who's saying the human race is unbeatable with his infantry suits. Next, if Cruise is so famous, how come no one recognizes him at the military base where they're prepping for the battle? The general ships him off to this base with his identity removed and a new rank of private. So naturally when Cruise explains to everyone there's been a mistake on who he is, no one believes him? Everyone and their mom's should recognize him... has the whole military been living under a rock? Do they not have TV or internet at military bases in the future? Anyways, once this confusing beginning is used to explain how Tom Cruise gets into this bad situation, the meat of the movie begins. From here on out, everything is fantastic! Cruise gets killed during the battle, but not before soaking in some alien blood that lets him reset to the day before the battle in which he dies. I was ready to give this film a 9 until the last 10 minutes happened. The film makers refused to let Cruise die at the end when finally defeating the main creature that's controlling the whole alien race. Basically, Cruise loses his ability to reset at one point, so at that point his choices become more crucial when it comes to surviving. This was great, because we needed to increase the stakes for our hero. Otherwise, the audience wouldn't care if he dies again. At the end, he blows up the main alien, but dies in the process. But as he's dieing, he soaks in some more alien blood to reset the day again... OK... so he wakes up prior to the battle ever happening (which is before he blows up the main alien) and everyone is celebrating that they killed the main creature which controls all the aliens. Uhhh... this makes absolutely no sense. If he reset to before he blew up the main alien, shouldn't he have to do it again? I guess they couldn't make this movie 3 hours long. Anyways, they shoehorn a happy ending in so Cruise lives rather than being an actual martyr... so he gets the girl at the end, which is suppose to be cute, because it was like they never met, based on the time he reset to one last time. Thank you Hollywood! *END SPOILERS*

Note: Did anyone else get annoyed by watching Emily Blunt do a seductive upward-dog yoga pose 4 times? It's like they wanted to take the most awkward shot in the whole film, and torture the audience with it over and over again.

Blunt plays Rita Vrataski, the enthralling, gorgeous exo-suited angel of death, and offers a good reason, for those on the edge of decision, to see this movie. The film takes a look at the idea of (near) infinite chances to overcome the impossible, and dives into the tedium of repetition required to turn a severe disadvantage around. This theme of repetition; however, may leave viewers, who aren't craving more augmented action, wishing Cage's self-termination would be permanent. The suit technology is a compelling blend of near-future military prototypes (that makes reference to real-life technology in the works) that avoids being over the top. Superb sound and visual effects keep things chaotic, but believable, as Cage and Vrataski drop into an endless hell.

Edge of Tomorrow is entertaining summer flick that will leave you catching your breath in satisfaction.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This one seemed to have slipped by most peoples movie radar this summer. I never would have foreseen a Groundhog Day meets Aliens mash up to be something worth watching but I walked out of this one having had thoroughly good time. The comedic possibilities of the Groundhog Day scenario were taken full advantage of and then the movie manages a serious shift that I found very touching.

I thought the best scene in the movie comes later in when Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt find themselves alone in a farm house planning for their next move against the aliens. The previous scenes don't give any indication that they have been to this farm before (since Tom relives the same day). The scene is skillfully unfolded to reveal that both characters had been there countless times and each time Emily's characters death, try as Tom's character might, could not be stopped. You see in that moment how deeply Tom's character had fallen in love and how unstoppable a force death is.

Costing an estimated $178 million, it only recovered $28 million opening weekend getting beat by a movie made for less than a tenth of its budget; The Fault in Our Stars. This failure could be attributed to Tom Cruise’s falling star power (especially among teens), however I think it is due to the inability of the posters and trailers to capture how much fun the movie’s formula is.
Based on the novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka (which would have been a better title) The Edge of Tomorrow combines a number of sci-fi concepts and devices with the time loop effect popularized by Groundhog Day. While nearly everything in the film is borrowed from other sources, the way the film combines them is never dull.
The film opens with Tom Cruise as Cage, a slimy war recruiter and military PR man, delivering lines of expository dialogue. We are efficiently brought up to speed with what is happening. The world is under attack by aliens, Europe has been taken over and the world is launching a unified last ditch effort to save mankind. It’s the kind of background that is familiar to the genre and Doug Liman recognizes this and sends us immediately into the action.
The war effort appears to be headed by General Brigham (Brendon Gleeson) who sends Cage to the front lines. The scene feels forced. It’s essentially a plot mechanic to get Cruise into the fight. After a brief introduction of some (very) flat supporting characters the battle begins. Cage manages to survive long enough to kill a large blue alien that melts acid over his face. This provides Cage with the Groundhog Day powers; every time he dies the day repeats. The twist is that he must die or else he loses them.
Cruise’s performance works as he transitions from a rookie recruit to a killing machine with the help of macho Emily Blunt. The pair’s chemistry is one of the reason’s the film succeeds. The fight/die/repeat mechanic makes the incredible fight sequences more believable and at times surprisingly funny.
While the film reminds us it is a Hollywood production with a predictably cliché ending, when the action is going Tom Cruise shows us why he’s one the best. While individual pieces are nothing original, the film adds up to more than a sum of its parts.

I alternated between thinking, 'running out of quarters' and 'MMO dungeon with a new player to teach, this time let's hope he doesn't stand in the fire' for much of the film. Expand

Its official. Tom Cruise is on a self hating streak. First he fights himself in Oblivion, now he must kill himself again and again in this film in order to "reset" the day.
Not that I am complaining. Unlike Oblivion, which started out really slick but had the predictable plot implode with sci-fi twists, Edge of Tomorrow takes a simple but unique premise and executes it masterfully.
This film carefully shows us just enough to give us that sense of repetition without actually being repetitive. Often its done with a couple of seconds of establishing shot, or one line from a supporting character. The plot is self consistent. It suffers from two major Hollywood shortcuts. Kill the main bad guy and the rest will fall. And I won't spoil the second one but it has to do self sacrifice. Other than that it is a completely original story.
For the characters. Emily Blunt is very much the star of the show. She acts impressively well against Tom Cruise's character. Tom Cruise has only ever been able to play one guy. Modulated or regulated depending on the roll but one basic "guy." This film took that in an interesting direction. At the start of the film his character is more complex, being a hypocritical coward. As the film progresses he sheds aspects of that to eventually become the character we are more familiar with. It gave his character more of a story arch. Emily Blunts character didn't really change (per the plot), but as the film goes on you learn more about her back story and she becomes more interesting. She also serves as a foil to Cruises character and it worked really well.
Aliens have been done quite often in film but the creatures presented in this film are an interesting take on it. Being entirely prop or CG with no human element at all was extremely effective. These creatures look like some kind of deep ocean life form hybrid and are suitably threatening. Speaking of which the CG and special effects are top notch.
All things considering, this is probably the best sci fi film of the summer, if not the year.

The action and effects are great, but the plot is also pretty cerebral for a summer action movie. It's kind of a hybrid of Groundhog Day, Inception, and Saving Private Ryan, but it still feels fresh and original. There are even some moments of deeper contemplation sprinkled throughout. Cruise can still sturdily support an action movie in his 50s, which is a pretty tough thing to do, even at a young age. If I have any lucid complaints about the movie, it's that the finale doesn't ever rise to the extreme heights that it could, or more accurately, should have, given the strength of the film's buildup. Still though, you should go see the movie, because it's very entertaining, and it could end up being the best movie of the summer. Expand

A nive movie version for the manga 'All you need is kill'.
Cruise is quite convincing, Emlily is lovely and badass and this version of the mimics is better than the manga ones.
I recommend the movie, and the manga too!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Certainly has some flawed elements. I cannot stand the love interest part, it was unnecessary. But of course a premise as grand of this always creates potential and I think this film did manage to fill some of it's boots. The action is impressive. You feel like you are in the middle of it all and that's very good. Also, the whole training sequences are great to watch and create great comedy at some points. Would've like to have seen more of that than the whole dilemma solving aspect to it. I see why people would like this movie, don't get me wrong I did, but I think it maybe is a tad overrated. Expand

It takes the concept of re-living every single day every time Cruise dies and presents itself in a way that doesn't feel repetitive! That's the best compliment about the movie, even though the know the storyline, it's not all predictable! The only big flaw I had was that at about the last 30 minutes or so it feels rushed and didn't present a fulfilling finale that I would really wanted, even feeling a little forced. Overall, the film was a total surprise thanks to a surprisingly smart story full of not so black and white characters, especially from Tom Cruise. I give this an A-! Expand

I prefer my aliens who are thousands of years ahead of mankind to at least be able to talk instead of yawn with lots of teeth. The scientist who knows how to defeat the aliens works in a basement, you know during the real wars every daft and stupid idea was exploited by the Nazis and the west. And the Generals response was ridiculous when confronted with the truth. Why didn't Tom at the start get the team of soldiers to forge a path of destruction across..nevermind. The historical opening scene is incredible, and combined with the awesome CGI and special effects, it totally took me of guard. The film is so underrated, and I truly love this film. This is one of the best sci-fi films of 2014! There's also some ironic scenes that I truly enjoyed to watch. There are some similarities between this and other films, which doesn't bother me, but it might could have been a bit more innovative at some places. Other negative aspects of Edge of Tomorrow is that the ending could have been better, but it's still one of the best sci-fi films of the year.

One groovy and awesome film!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When the trailers for Edge of Tomorrow first appeared, they deceptively showcased a generic sci-fi blockbuster awash in a flood of similar fare with zippy names like Divergent or Transcendence. It didn’t stand out. A friend quipped that someone should just invent a mech-suit so people don’t have to keep making movies about them.

I could see where he was coming from – we’ve seen it all before in Elysium (2013), Avatar (2009), District 9 (2009), The Matrix Revolutions (2003) and even Aliens (1986). Meanwhile, what appeared to be a sci-fi D-Day scene caused my brother to dismiss the film as Saving Private Ryan (1998) with aliens. This is absolutely true; there’s no coincidence that Edge of Tomorrow was released the week of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

So it seems derivative, but it is surprisingly creative. It manages to bring the best of these elements together and successfully decant them into what is, after all, an original film. It’s not a sequel to anything else, it’s not part of a franchise, and that’s always something to be happy about. It comes from director Doug Liman, who has directed many original action and sci-fi films, including The Bourne Identity (2002), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) and Jumper (2008).

As suggested, the conflict is evocative of the world wars (including both the D-Day landings and references to a decisive battle at Verdun) with a futuristic twist. An alien menace has decimated Europe and is poised to invade the United Kingdom, and we’re thrown into the action on the eve of the last desperate attempt by NATO to push back into France.

Tom Cruise stars as Major William Cage, showing us once again that he still knows how to star in a blockbuster. Cage is not a real soldier; he’s a PR man who thinks he’s there to sell the war to the public. He begins with typical Cruise charm and confidence, which then shatters when he’s sent to the front line by NATO commander General Brigham (Brendon Gleeson, the first we see of the film’s solid supporting cast).

He ends up in a squad of oddballs (squadballs?) under Master Sergeant Farrell (Bill Paxton, who was in Aliens). Everyone has mech-suits, because it’s the future and it’s cool. Cage can barely operate his, and swiftly ends up on the receiving end of an alien mandible. The alien special effects are high quality; they are scary, inhuman and move smoothly but unpredictably.

But it’s not all over, he’s entered a time loop, which resets to the night before the battle each time Cage is killed in action, which he is, again and again. Ultimately, he is able to use this ability to turn the tide of the battle and the war by incrementally improving each day, both by developing his skills and finding out how to beat the aliens.

However, he couldn’t do a thing without Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who was doing the same thing until she lost the ability. She’s a believably hardened veteran, and a hyper-competent warrior compared to the initially bumbling Cage. Though Cruise is the star, she takes the lead in the developing relationship between the two characters, even if he has to meet her for the first time every day.

The time loop inevitably draws comparisons further potential source material, in this case the classic Groundhog Day (1994). It’s also evocative of playing a video game; loading from a previous save point and attempting to beat the same impossible level over and over.

The film plays off the natural humour created by such a scenario, but it is often very dark, as Cage must die each time to reset the loop. Yet the humour works well and is perfectly balanced with the action and desperation of the larger campaign.

Edge of Tomorrow is based on a popular Japanese novella called All You Need is Kill, and some of the aesthetics, including the mech-suits and Vrataski’s impossibly huge sword evoke this origin. There’s another nod when the incompetent Cage gets his suit’s language stuck in Japanese.

Indeed, it is a global film, not just the American affair featuring Tom Cruise that it might have been. There are plenty of European actors, including Blunt, Gleeson and many of Cage’s squad. The opening sets the scene quickly with a composite of BBC News footage, and the film is exclusively set in England and France, with deserted, destroyed and military occupied scenes of London and Paris among the most powerful.

Cage’s character development is an excellent deconstruction of what we expect from Cruise as an actor. He starts out with a confidence built on cowardice, but is thrown completely out of his comfort zone. Over the rest of the film, the character works hard to attain a typical Tom Cruise level of action hero, which he doesn’t attain until the climax.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the scene where Emily kisses Tom before sacrificing herself as the decoy... though she only met him for less than two days, she knows that Tom is in love with her just by the way he stares at her (Tom Cruise delivered a masterful performance in an action film, as usual)...

because she herself has done her fair share of looping, by getting to the Omega lair, she's cognizant of the fact he has already spent a lifetime with her, fighting and dying beside her, over and over again... she empathizes how difficult it was watching a loved one die, like she had done more than 300 times... it takes a lot of will power to start the day over from scratch to anticipate another failure, and she gets it... she's the only other human who does...

her final kiss reveals how she's touched by it all, despite trying to avoid getting him emotionally vested by appearing cold all the time... they both know it might be their last time together... after all, she dug him at first sight by her expression every time Cruise walks in on her training routine when they first meet... maybe seeing her back alive after a restart is what drives Tom Cruise to get back up on his feet to face another death... no longer was he motivated by survival, but by love...

It's these emotional nuances in films or tv shows audience can connect with that makes them worth watching.

The action was great and I was interested the whole time, so it is a pretty good summer movie worthy of praise I suppose. At the same time it is filled with plot holes and does drag on in parts. The performances were also uneven. Tom Cruise was extremely static the entire film when the role requires amazing dynamism, but with few exceptions the other performances were fantastic. Emily Blunt performs her role flawlessly with great help from the script and manages to be drop dead gorgeous while doing it. Brendan Gleeson (Mad Eye Moody in the Harry Potter films) is terrific as always and Bill Paxton delivers exactly what his character is meant to convey.

This movie was difficult for me to rate because while I had problems with it while walking out of the theater, I was interested the whole time and quite entertained. Additionally, it is a great subject of conversation following the movie. I would say the movie is not a "must see," but is a fun activity for the summer nonetheless.

It’s like Groundhog Day on crack, in a good way. The 113 minutes runtime follows Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as they try to figure out how to stop an alien race before they take over the world; sounds simple enough. Early in the film Tom Cruise gets infected by an alien, causing him to relive the same day over and over. This film was a refreshing take on Si-Fi action due to creative turns and clever character arcs. The editing was top-notch, the best of the year in my opinion. Camera work made you feel like you were in the action and complimented, really well, the editing and acting. Another thing this movie really nailed was the strong female role played by Emily Blunt, it’s the strongest female role I've seen this year. Don’t dismiss this film as being “just another human vs. aliens” movie, because it’s much more than that.  The unique, time-reflecting transitions interjected throughout the whole movie, keep your focus. Quick, timely references to past experiences, rather than drawn-out flashbacks, really helped move this film along at a perfect pace. The only thing I can pick apart about this film is the cheesy unrealistic climax that seemed to take the easy way out. This annoyed me because the movie was perfect up until then.  With a little more effort I felt like they could have made a better climax. Another thing this movie did really at was interjecting humor in all the right places. Overall I found this movie very entertaining and surprisingly clever. Edge Of Tomorrow is epic and if you get the chance definitely check it out on the big screen. Expand

I agree with that notion which is why Edge of Tomorrow is so refreshing. It's a good thing that the filmmakers had the courage to make a movie based on a Japanese graphic novel titled, "All You Need Is Kill". Edge of Tomorrow has explosive action, a smart plot, and emotion. The action scenes are the best I've seen in a while. Battles are punctured with huge explosions and heavy gunfire. They manage to be quite intense and fast paced. The alien enemies called Mimics are like the Lambent from Gears of War but without guns and more deadly. They manage to kill Cage(Tom Cruise) and Rita(Emily Blunt) savagely and different every time. They die...a lot but not permanently. The way he comes back to life reminds me of a video game. Every time he dies, he awakens earlier in the day before the battle. So essentially, Cage must relive that day until he finds a way to defeat the Mimics. The premise may not be entirely original because of Groundhogs Day but it's executed splendidly. Tom Cruse and Emily Blunt play their characters very well. Rita is a likable bad ass and Cage goes through a big metamorphosis. The journey they go through is memorable and there are moments with tangible emotion between them. Oh, and it was great seeing it in 3D. There were a couple of times I lurched back in my seat when a mimic would come flying out. With it's intense action scenes, great plot, and emotional moments, Edge of Tomorrow manages to be the best movie of the summer so far. I hope you see it. Expand

I only went to see it because my sister wanted to see it, so I went with her. I ended up seeing it two more times after that because I think it is the best sci-fi movie I have seen in the past couple years. The last sci-fi movie I really liked was Looper from a couple years ago. Dredd was good too. All the other big budget sci-fi has been rubbish the last couple years in my opinion (Elysium, Oblivion, etc).

Half of the few bad reviews I have seen for this movie say something stupid like "There isn't enough character development". Cruise is in a time loop, he is the only character that can really develop and he does...all the other players have no clue about anything, every time they meet Cruise, it is the first time they have ever met him even though he may have spent hundreds of days with them. The characters can't develop because they only exist for that one day.

There is no real romance between Cruise and Blunt because she is meeting him for the first time every day. It becomes obvious that he loves her, but she doesn't feel anything like that for him because she has only known him for a few hours. He has spent hundreds of days with her, but she doesn't remember any of it. Cruise keeps seeing her die over and over again on the Normandy beach, and there is a great scene only ~10 seconds long where you can see it is hurting him to see her keep dying like that. When she dies, he doesn't even try to win anymore, he just lets the aliens kill him so he can try again. He even tells her later that he doesn't want to go on and win if she dies because she will be dead forever then...of course, she won't remember that the next day, but he does.

I would give this movie a 10 if the end weren't so contrived and Hollywood. Basically a great movie with an ok ending imo.

This movie definetly has some great quotes, vfx, and directing but the ending just didnt do it for me. Very dissapointed, this could've potentially been better than XMEN: DOFP but the script and plot for the end of the movie left me very dissapointed and I felt like I could've done a better job. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt worked very well together and when a movie is in a time loop it is hard to keep the audience into the movie but still refreshed every time Tom Cruise loops back to when he wakes up. The beginning and throughout captivation really pushed this movie, but the sore ending left me wanting for a new and better ending. 8/10 Expand

Great concept... decent execution.. botched third act. How can you create a movie with a concept as mind-boggling as this one, and decide to do a straightforward all-action climax? Dumb move, Hollywood.

Down-points on either the action sequences weren't stretched enough or the direction lacked clarity for these. In any case the focus is the constant leaping of time lines.

Live die repeat i'd think is more a video game concept than a sci-fi one. You have a mission and infinite lives and you're not really bothered by the rationale of this time travel technology. I hope they make one (Emily Blunt as a sword wielding operative in a 'rainbow six meets hack and slash' game).

It seems to be the typical summer movie, with the only purpose of raising money, but do not be fooled, it's one of the best films, of the science fiction genre, in recent years.
It has a seemingly simple plot, but it becomes complicated, and in my opinion,it is really good, thanks to Tom Cruise, who is brilliant in his role as the protagonist of the film, but without underestimating Emily Blunt, who manages to be one of the Top heroines of recent times. Also to highlight its impressive special effects, although not justify spending nearly 200 million in the film, even though the script makes up for it.
In short, a film that should be given a chance, I will not disappoint you.

After Cruise's awful 'Oblivion', this looked like another generic action flick with no heart, no brain and no fun. Fortunately, Edge of Tomorrow is a smart, often humorous and very tense film. The visuals are stunning, and it contains the best utilisation of 3D I've seen in a long while. Cruise is excellent (which grinds on me somewhat, as I really don't like the guy - but his talent is undeniable), and Blunt is effective and agile in her first action blockbuster. The comparisons to Groundhog Day are valid, and it might actually help to watch that first. This is that, but with monsters. A surprising treat. Expand

What I didn't like about the movie was the idea of "time-looping" was becoming a bit tedious and just became an easy answer to get out of a tight spot. Despite this, the story moved really well, and I can't say there was a wasted moment in this movie.

Tom Cruise plays a different character than we've seen in his last few movies. Instead of a super spy that dodges bullets, here he is Bill Cage a cowardly military propagandist who gets sent to the front lines to battle an alien invasion. During the first few minutes of battle he is killed but wakes up again to the day before battle and the process repeats and he gets better and smarter each time. Edge of Tomorrow is the type of smart and sleek sci-fi action that we have not seen the like of since James Cameron's Aliens. And speaking of aliens, the "Mimics" in this movie look great and come off looking very original. The acting is very good not only from Tom but also from Emily Blunt who plays Rita Vrataski, a hardened soldier who has also went through the time loop. The action is well done, the effects are very good and a lot of them are practical which is a huge plus in my book. I highly recommend seeing this in the theaters. Expand

I wanted to see why the ratings were so high and I found out why. The movie is as solid as it comes in terms of an action movie. The movie was exciting to watch the entire time and kept you interested. Comedy was included in the movie in a very subtle and cohesive way which didn't take away from the film's serious tone overall. I cannot find a fault with the film and that is what I'm usually looking for. Tom Cruise gives a very good action performance which isn't unusual at all given his long list of action roles which he executes great. Personal feelings put aside about the guy, he is the ideal action star in today's Hollywood. If you're looking for a story, find a drama. But as far as action films go; if you're a fan of the genre, this is most likely the best action film of the year pending completion of the year. Expand

They also add a little amount of humor to break up all the "Live/Die/Repeat" witch is nice. It's movies like this these days that really help you still believe in things. I for one have grown weary of movies about aliens just way overdone in my opinion, unless you can show me something different. Original is a bad word to use because few things are but this movie got close. It had a very generic oh no aliens are going to take over the world, what do we do approach. When you do that you better have a dang good alien plot and a dang good alien to fight against. Edge of Tomorrow had both. I really liked these aliens and that their biology was different from anything from Earth. And how they moved is freaky and would scare anyone up against them. And best of all, they are not impossible to kill! Tom Cruise nailed it...not sure how, he's been such a consistent action-hero in recent years it's hard to see him at first as a weakling or pansy, but he actually is convincing. And then his gradual step into the hero spotlight doesn't seem at all cliche' its just a matter of how do you beat someone who knows everything you are about to do? I thought the replay of the same day would start getting annoying but they were careful about that too. It was just well done. Blunt and Cruise complimented each other perfectly and it gets to a point where you're like FALL IN LOVE ALREADY. So a good watch for sure. Action fix, sprinkled of humor here and there and a well structured plot...ahhh (relieved sigh) thank you. Expand

To put it extremely simplistically, think Groundhog's Day with an alien invasion, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, along with Bay level explosions and a good sense of humour.
Of course it's much more than that. Brilliantly edited, great visuals and a fast paced plot, with Tom Cruise once again reminding us that whatever you think about him, the man belongs on screen.

However, like I mentioned before but the movie does get slow at points. It never stops in it's tracks thankfully, but I wish the mid-section of the movie was a tiny bit more interesting. Also, the other major thing that bothered me was the ending. Is not terrible by any means, but is not satisfying either.

Visually, the movie is well crafted. The special effects deliver but are not so heavy that they feel overwhelming. It's clear this movie relied a lot on actual sets and production design. The VFX are a nice supplements, specially for the alien creatures.
