He strikes me as a second hand car salesman; too slick to be true. I had therefore no problem to picture him as the protagonist in this movie: an officer charged with speaking to the media: lacking any combat-experience and intent on staying as far away from any combat zone as possible. When ordered to join the troops in what his superior deems to be a walk-in-the-park landing, Tom blackmails his commander to let him off the hook, which severely backfires on him, for he finds himself soon stripped of rank among the first to land with the reputation of being a deserter who pretended to be an officer to escape his duty.

The enemy are called mimics for reasons that are never explained in the movie. They resemble metal octopuses, who move at incredible speed, mostly underground. They are aliens and that is about all we learn about them and that is all we need to learn about them. It suffices that they are a deadly force hell-bent on wiping out humanity(some decades in the future, somebody will write a book about how these inhuman threats are a sign of the times, just like 70s and 80s had their disaster movies).
D-day quickly turns into a massacre as the aliens wipe out the human forces before they can gain a foothold. Tom dies too, but before he does, he manages to kill one of the rarest of mimics, and finds himself returned to life one day before the landing takes place. Baffled Tom goes through the same day and tries to intervene the course of action in a haphazard way. It doesn't matter that he does because everyone dies.. and he does to.
And then finds himself alive and back in time again.

And so it goes. With each cycle Tom gets better because he knows what will happen, but also has a lot of time to gain experience, but dies nevertheless again and again.
How does he get out of this predicament? He learns with each cycle and eventually he is aided by Emily Blunt, who has suffered from the same effects.
Up till this sounds like a corny predictable movie, but the script isn't as easy as you might think. The focus in this movie isn't on the humans vs aliens conflict, but on the interaction between Cruise and Blunt and their frantic efforts to turn the only advantage they have, foreknowledge, against the aliens. The key to their success is actually their ability to convince others that Tom possess that foreknowledge so that they help in the effort. And this is the hardest part.

The script avoids giving us insight into the alien thinking. The mimics are kept as far away from the camera as possible and we never get a good clear view of them. This is smart for any alien eventually gets boring when shown too often. An example is the landing, in which a lot of carnage happens before the aliens themselves actually show up.
The movie even throws us of the track by introducing a twist in the story that makes the aliens even more sinister. Perhaps everything has been planned beforehand?

Yet there are flaws in the movie, such as the way Tom ends up in the combat zone. And also the ending is a bit contrived and clearly written to give us a good feel. There is nothing against a movie with a good ending, but one that forced makes for a lesser ending.
Also one wonders why, having the possession of a flying craft at the start of the invasion, Tom and Blunt feel the need to have to get a car and a helicopter further land inward thus getting themselves killed time and again?

Personally I think that the movie is at its best when Cruise and Blunt are together and it might have been more stronger if more time was to the group of people who aid him so that their characters would have mattered if and when they died.
My learning points about this movie would be that some more time could have spent characterizing the people who eventually will aid Tom. Spend less time on the battles in the landing zone and the repeating scenes(which in themselves are shot in a way as to avoid boring repetition, which ought to be mentioned) and give more time to the final attack.

My ranking gives this a 7 out of 10. This needs an explanation: in it's genre this movie is a 9.. but since ranks are given not to genre or category they are given an overall score. In it's genre of action sci-fi it desevers something of a 9. Which means it is pretty good.

Im sorry I just wanted to chim in on the comment I have found in the review for this movie

"This is one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen in my entire life. If I am playing a video game and I am stuck and have to play the same part over and over it gets ANNOYING. To the point that either I beat it pretty quick or I quit playing the game because it ceases to be entertaining, or fun at that point. So if a movie was going to emulate that concept why the heck would I want to watch it."

I haven't seen such missed analogy in a long time, guess that's what come out of checkpoint generation. Now imagine for a second that the game is really hard and you have only ONE life, otherwise the game resets and you start everything all over again. You have to master the mechanics as your 'final' run needs to be flawless, guess that could count as an achievement but not by today's standards... it feels like whole hotline miami on one life.

As for the movie itself I liked the concept and although it seem basic it felt refreshing and intriguing at points. Really felt like the execution was really on point.

These days, it's hard to make a profitable movie with blockbusters coming out every week. Movies have to fight at each other's throats to suceed. And that really ends up hurting everybody and creates opportunities perfect for a box officeThese days, it's hard to make a profitable movie with blockbusters coming out every week. Movies have to fight at each other's throats to suceed. And that really ends up hurting everybody and creates opportunities perfect for a box office bomb. This makes it hard for average moviegoers to pick what movie they should watch. Also, for amateur movie critics like myself, it's hard to keep up with all these releases. With Maleficent, X-Men DOFP, The Fault In Our Stars, Godzilla, TASM2, Blended, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Neighbors, and a few other films as competitors, I hope that this film will manage to succeed.

Original? Unique? The premise of someone being stuck in a time travel loop isn't really, as it's been done before in Hollywood (Groundhog Day!). However, this film still manages to be fun and entertaining with a familiar premise. For those who are now young, those new to movies, or those new to the Sci-Fi genre, this won't feel overdone because they likely haven't seen too many movies with time-loops. Those who are older, more experienced and seasoned, or who have seen many Sci-Fi films might feel that this movie doesn't offer much new stuff or tread any new ground. Some might fear the "Live, Die, Repeat" thing might become boring and tiresome after a while--but with different camera angles, time jumps, and slightly different dialogue each time it doesn't. The re-spawning sequences are often funny and entertaining. Many have been reminded of videogames with this movie because Cruise is like an inexperienced kid. Trial and error, luck, etc. He uses the same tactics most use in videogames to become a better and better soldier, or "weapon".

Tom Cruise usually stars as some skilled fighter, but here he is just a Propaganda, Media, PR guy. This new inexperienced character is a good one for Cruise to play. It's different than his usual roles. William Cage is just trying to convince the public that the UDF--United Defense Forces--will win the war. (Promoting something one personally has never experienced or doesn't know much about? Hmm, where have I heard that before?) He's never been in a day of combat, and is totally unprepared for the horrors and challenges of warfare. He dies, but wakes up again. And again. And again. He's gained the power to reset the day. William Cage (Tom Cruise's character) ends up teaming up with a woman known as Rita, the "Angel of Verdun" (Emily Blunt's character). Together, they attempt to defeat the Mimics (Earth's alien invaders) and stop the time loop. Here, Cruise is able to be comedic AND and a action-hero star. Emily Blunt is able to be a badass (hence her other nickname, the "Full Metal B*tch"). They work great together; the chemistry between the two is good. The cast is good (liked to see Bill Paxton!). Some think Rita could've maybe had more development, but to me her development was almost perfect.

The plot is nice and the CGI good. The designs for the Mimics was done good. The exoskeletons were well-designed, but for me a BIT too bulky in some areas. Compared to Elysium's suits? Honestly, I feel both exo-skeletons combined would be great. (But does that really matter? What matters is the movie itself). The locations for the film were nice, and weren't locations like Washington DC that have been destroyed too many times.

This proves Tom Cruise is still a great actor, as some seem to dislike him. Personally, I haven't seen too much of Tom Cruise but what I have seen is good. Thanks to this movie, Emily Blunt is now a name I will look for. Great film. I hope people will see it one way or another, because it's good. Some say the ending is weak, cliched, convenient, confusing, but I liked it. It didn't bother me and didn't hurt too bad my overall impression of the film.

The film isn't as dark as the name of the novel it was based on would suggest, "All You Need is Kill". The name "Edge of Tommorow" is more forgettable but because of the supposed negative buzz surrounding the word "Kill" in the title the name was changed. Oh well. The film was released on the anniversary of D-Day, and it certainly reminds me of D-Day with the war setting and the beach assault.

If you liked this review, please read my other ones and mark this review as helpful. I have also reviewed X-Men Days of Future Past, Godzilla, Blended, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Lego Movie, and more. I also review TV shows and videogames. Remember, every vote counts!

Sincerely, AG732. Until next time!

Just got done about an hour ago seeing this movie in Imax 3D. It's absolutely spectacular. I haven't seen a huge ammount of Tom Cruise movies but he nails his character in Edge Of Tomorrow.

When I saw the trailer for this movie it looked like too much to throw into a movie. Luckily, the movie is nearly 2 hours long, so there is a lot of breathing room. The general premise of dying and waking up again over and over and over has been done in a handful of films but that doesn't mean this film doesn't introduce anything new. Throughout the movie you'll constantly be interested in the equipment the UDF military is using. You'll always be pondering in your head what something does and what you think it is doing. Especially since the main character has no idea how to operate the equipment, you'll sort of learn with him.

The movie is packed with action, a bit of mystery, alien genocidal threat, and a thriller premise without taking away from the very creative era of earth it is set in.

If there was one thing I could complain about it would be that sometimes the story at times felt a little far fetched and wasn't coherent in some nitpicky parts of the plot. But suspension of disbelief will get you there.

And if they're not... well you'll probably still like it, anyway. I wasn't particularly satisfied with the ending, but the movie never felt boring and as a whole, I enjoyed it very much. A welcome bi-product of the premise was the feeling that anything could happen to the main character at any time. Other movies often fail to deliver any real feeling of fear or surprise, given that you assume the main character will come out the other side with only a few scratches and bruises. But because the anchor of this story is repeatedly living a single day until he dies, the next fatal blow could be right around the corner. This film also provides some welcome realism in that our hero doesn't miraculously dodge every bullet or perform each maneuver perfectly the first time. I found that the filmmakers highlighted this very well and it provided some believability to an otherwise unbelievable story. At any rate, definitely worth my Saturday afternoon and money. Expand

The idea of combining "Groundhog Day", "Aliens", and the Halo video game is both thrilling and funny. Once the D-day looping gets going, the audience becomes attuned to it and revels in Major Cage's Sisyphus-like efforts to advance the clock and defeat the Mimic hordes. The filmmakers keep that editing relatively tight, so we are never bored by a "oh, this part again" syndrome. In almost a tip of the cap to "Aliens", Bill Paxton appears as a Master Sergeant more than happy to send the alleged deserter Cage to his glorious doom, only later to have his Kentucky-bred drill squad speeches defused by the front-running Cage, who by then has literally heard it all before.

There are few deficiencies. Emily Blunt is less believable as a ruthless Amazon leading the assault on the French beaches, but is solid as a romantic heroine. And the J Squad members are fairly expendable, which is fine by me so that our emotional investment doesn't get too fragmented from the two leads.

Despite much of the craziness in Cruise's personal life, he's still arguably the foremost movie star of his time. His films typically deliver a high-quality product with a recent predilection to science fiction action tales. Last summer's "Oblivion" came up short in that particular department but he followed that up with the under-rated "Jack Reacher" last fall. There's a surprising amount of vulnerability on display here as well as a hilariously cowardly squirm to the beginning of his Mad Men-turned-soldier arc.

I think "Edge of Tomorrow" will live on with the original "Mission Impossible" and "Jerry Maguire" in the Cruise canon for some time to come.

One of the top 3 best movies I've ever seen. When I saw the poster the movie looked strange to me, and I know a lot of people hate Tom Cruise for some reason, but he's a great actor, I'm not big on his older movies but this one was completely organic. I don't know if it's just me but when I watched it again I fully understood what was happening, I noticed a lot of things I missed the first time, the movie is so meticulously written and it's one of those movies everyone has to see, it's up there with The Matrix and Dark Knight. The movie revolves around time travel, it's not vague like you often see in sci-fi where you don't really understand what's happening, it's simple like Groundhog Day, speaking of Groundhog Day this movie is very inspired by Groundhog Day. EoT will make you feel nostalgia, fear, joy, etc. I won't spoilerize anything, all I can say is that it's one of the best movies ever made, it's gritty, it's dark and they did a great job avoiding plot holes, something Days of Future Past was chalk-full of. Avoid the Angry Joe review, he spoils the **** out of every single thing he reviews, he always tells you what happens at the end which ruins the movie/game.

+ Gritty/Dark/Scary
+ Great acting
+ Great production
+ Great plot
- Not gory enough
- Action scenes are kind of hard to make out sometimes
- Music isn't great and memorable like Inception/Dark Knight/Matrix/etc. I always said that music makes a gargantuan difference in quality but this movie did just fine without it

If you like action movies, this is a movie for you. Worth your $10 or $11 bucks for great entertainment.

At its heart Edge of Tomorrow is an excellent sci fi action film. This cinematic roller-coaster is densely packed with details and touches that elevate the material and make it a modern day classic.

It’s like Groundhog Day on crack, in a good way. The 113 minutes runtime follows Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as they try to figure out how to stop an alien race before they take over the world; sounds simple enough. Early in the film Tom Cruise gets infected by an alien, causing him to relive the same day over and over. This film was a refreshing take on Si-Fi action due to creative turns and clever character arcs. The editing was top-notch, the best of the year in my opinion. Camera work made you feel like you were in the action and complimented, really well, the editing and acting. Another thing this movie really nailed was the strong female role played by Emily Blunt, it’s the strongest female role I've seen this year. Don’t dismiss this film as being “just another human vs. aliens” movie, because it’s much more than that.  The unique, time-reflecting transitions interjected throughout the whole movie, keep your focus. Quick, timely references to past experiences, rather than drawn-out flashbacks, really helped move this film along at a perfect pace. The only thing I can pick apart about this film is the cheesy unrealistic climax that seemed to take the easy way out. This annoyed me because the movie was perfect up until then.  With a little more effort I felt like they could have made a better climax. Another thing this movie did really at was interjecting humor in all the right places. Overall I found this movie very entertaining and surprisingly clever. Edge Of Tomorrow is epic and if you get the chance definitely check it out on the big screen. Expand

I agree with that notion which is why Edge of Tomorrow is so refreshing. It's a good thing that the filmmakers had the courage to make a movie based on a Japanese graphic novel titled, "All You Need Is Kill". Edge of Tomorrow has explosive action, a smart plot, and emotion. The action scenes are the best I've seen in a while. Battles are punctured with huge explosions and heavy gunfire. They manage to be quite intense and fast paced. The alien enemies called Mimics are like the Lambent from Gears of War but without guns and more deadly. They manage to kill Cage(Tom Cruise) and Rita(Emily Blunt) savagely and different every time. They die...a lot but not permanently. The way he comes back to life reminds me of a video game. Every time he dies, he awakens earlier in the day before the battle. So essentially, Cage must relive that day until he finds a way to defeat the Mimics. The premise may not be entirely original because of Groundhogs Day but it's executed splendidly. Tom Cruse and Emily Blunt play their characters very well. Rita is a likable bad ass and Cage goes through a big metamorphosis. The journey they go through is memorable and there are moments with tangible emotion between them. Oh, and it was great seeing it in 3D. There were a couple of times I lurched back in my seat when a mimic would come flying out. With it's intense action scenes, great plot, and emotional moments, Edge of Tomorrow manages to be the best movie of the summer so far. I hope you see it. Expand

I only went to see it because my sister wanted to see it, so I went with her. I ended up seeing it two more times after that because I think it is the best sci-fi movie I have seen in the past couple years. The last sci-fi movie I really liked was Looper from a couple years ago. Dredd was good too. All the other big budget sci-fi has been rubbish the last couple years in my opinion (Elysium, Oblivion, etc).

Half of the few bad reviews I have seen for this movie say something stupid like "There isn't enough character development". Cruise is in a time loop, he is the only character that can really develop and he does...all the other players have no clue about anything, every time they meet Cruise, it is the first time they have ever met him even though he may have spent hundreds of days with them. The characters can't develop because they only exist for that one day.

There is no real romance between Cruise and Blunt because she is meeting him for the first time every day. It becomes obvious that he loves her, but she doesn't feel anything like that for him because she has only known him for a few hours. He has spent hundreds of days with her, but she doesn't remember any of it. Cruise keeps seeing her die over and over again on the Normandy beach, and there is a great scene only ~10 seconds long where you can see it is hurting him to see her keep dying like that. When she dies, he doesn't even try to win anymore, he just lets the aliens kill him so he can try again. He even tells her later that he doesn't want to go on and win if she dies because she will be dead forever then...of course, she won't remember that the next day, but he does.

I would give this movie a 10 if the end weren't so contrived and Hollywood. Basically a great movie with an ok ending imo.

An excellent recent LaTimes interview with Doug describes his script and studio issues insightfully. Apparently he had to write a new third act and I think he's done brilliantly. Doug knows just the right balls to keep in the air and which to drop because we have been there, done that so many times before.

I liked Oblivion also, despite its useless title and this is more of the same in many respects, sci-fi film reimagined to do things impossible to do in sci-fi video games.

The movie is about repetition but is not repetitive. It has great moments of using that repetition for comedy and also for suspense. What a great line this film walked to achieve this effect!

I found myself trying to figure out what I would do or say in those same situations and also worrying about what the characters were going to do once they were presented with the same information the audience had. This to me proves that this film never gets boring or predictable which might also mean that this is a very entertaining film and one to recommend to friends.

Have fun "Maggot"! :)

Before watching this movie, I read the manga adaptation of the novel from where the movie was based on. I have an idea of what will happen during the story but they still have their differences.

Different that the movie puts more humor in a kind of dark movie which is a plus; and, the movie put more perspective into the relationship between Cage (Tom Cruise), Rita (Blunt), and his crew members.

The action scenes were quite terrific. Reliving the experiences and going on another path gives the scenes freshness even though most of the battles are on the same geographical location. What were missing though are gigantic monsters to kill to give an epicness on the battlefield.

The effects and sounds were excellent. You would see how beautiful a plane crash would be and how loud a machine gun fires. What I like the most is the Power Suit or the armor worn by the soldiers during battle scenes. You'll feel the power it provides just by looking how the characters wear them alone.

The Character development of Cage is excellent. The psychology of war and death has made him more prepared for the next battle. Likewise, it also created a longing for peace inside him.

The story is somewhat of a cliche as alien versus human have been created since the dawn of film making. How we get to the end would be the best part of it. On the title page, you would notice the word Live.Die.Repeat. I won't spoil you much, but the words will heavily impact how you see things in the story.

Overall, this is an excellent movie and a recommended watch to those who like sci-fi, who are war enthusiasts, who like aliens versus humans, and avid video gamers. There are not much of a Twilight romance to be found in the story, but you would still see the relationship of Cage and Rita develop in an implicit kind of way.

I gave this movie 9/10. The ending of the movie is a "meh" for me. As I've said before, I've read the manga which is faithful to the novel this movie is based on. I liked the ending on the manga hence I deducted one point.

The movie was exciting to watch the entire time and kept you interested. Comedy was included in the movie in a very subtle and cohesive way which didn't take away from the film's serious tone overall. I cannot find a fault with the film and that is what I'm usually looking for. Tom Cruise gives a very good action performance which isn't unusual at all given his long list of action roles which he executes great. Personal feelings put aside about the guy, he is the ideal action star in today's Hollywood. If you're looking for a story, find a drama. To put it extremely simplistically, think Groundhog's Day with an alien invasion, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, along with Bay level explosions and a good sense of humour.
Of course it's much more than that. Brilliantly edited, great visuals and a fast paced plot, with Tom Cruise once again reminding us that whatever you think about him, the man belongs on screen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed it MUCH more than I thought that I would have. It really is the sci-fi-action version of Groundhog Day and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. But it has a heart, and the aliens are not TOO annoying. (Why does every movie this summer - see X-Men - have to have creatures that look like the Sentinels from The Matrix?) Certainly recommended fare. I had a smile on my face for most of the film, which is a good sign in my book! Expand

The first thing that sparked my interest was to see the film opening in the heat of summer, and NOT being a sequel of some sorts and reboot.
Secondly, Tom Cruise and the odd ball pairing of Emily Blunt. And Thirdly, Director Doug Liman. After months of speculation, leading up to the film's initial release, I was worrisome. How can an original Sci-Fi open up in the midst of the summer movie going season and stand its own?. Granted, two years ago we had "Prometheus" but that was more a prequel than "original". Anyhow, "Edge Of Tomorrow" adversely sets itself apart from other big budget spectacles this year. You would never think that the whole "Groundhog Day" meets "Independence Day" angle would ever work. But it does.

Tom Cruise is kind of in his typical wheelhouse, not playing the big budget action hero he is stereotyped as. Which also gives the movie some added credibility. Aside from him, Emily Blunt evenly matches her co-star, and actually is impressive to watch on screen together. The story is set in the backdrop, where humans have been at war for five years against an alien menace, called Mimics. The NATO militaries have created an ultimatum to fight the ongoing invasion, there called Jackets. Which are an exoskeleton body armor suit which are equipped to the bone with heavy aliterlary. Cruise plays Major William Cage. a fidgety, egotistical and plan marketing expert whose sole job is to ensure the public enlist in the on going fight.

Then there is Rita Vratarski (Blunt) more like a channeling "Rosie The Riveter" of this generation. Rita and Cage unlikely cross paths in the midst of battle, where Cage has gained accessed to a supernatural ability or "time loop", whereas every time he is killed, the day prior starts over or "resets". The two must form a bond, and live to fight each day and harvest the power of the Mimics in order to ensure humanity's survival.

Some, actually most, will likely argue that the action scenes, creature design and so forth are the films greatest strengths. I attest to those attributes, but I genuinely feel the film's greatest strengths lies within the screenplay, and the performance of Tom Cruise. In the beginning were susceptible, thinking Cruise is likely playing his normal "Top Gun" or "Mission Impossible" persona, however, this is never the case. The growth of Cruise's character, William Cage is worth the price of admission alone. I love how the audience goes from knowing a skirmish guy that has to ask constantly "Where is the safety?" to the end, where he is busting loads of bullets into alien sc*m, the only way he sees fit. It's honestly quite impressive.

Emily Blunt is fun also, while not being able to take her seriously maybe a tad hard, but her persona was perfect, and she's not your normal leading lady. Instead, she evenly pits herself against the big guns (no pun intended) and swings with full blast. Another greater strength to this film, is that it balances it's comic relief with stylized sci-fi sequences that feels like a breath of fresh air. From the over intoxication of deaths on screen, nobody could ever tell you they don't enjoy a laugh or two.

Of course, with the strengths comes the weaknesses. Where most film's problems is the pacing, "Edge Of Tomorrow" kind of suffers from lack thereof. Essentially, every five minutes the film is basically set in a spiral motion, and then bam, the whole relive every day plot sinks in, and becomes tasteless after a while. This never distracted from my overall enjoyment. I can say, however, I was a little fatigue with where things ended up. Including a satisfying conclusion, that was a tad rushed, and won't leave you feeling cheated. (Even though the ending, for lack of some better words, COULD have been better).

At the end of the day, weather your sci-fi geek, Tom Cruise extraordinaire, or any of the above. Doug Liman's "Edge Of Tomorrow" has a little something from everyone. And if you have the option .. it looks and sound's stunning in IMAX 3D

B+

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. A few things felt a little bit contrived, (like going back in time to a very specific point in time every time you die, gee, that sure was convenient). But overall, it was a solid action flick with some comedy mixed in. Expand

Unexpectedly riveting, funny, and smart. The story isn't quite original, but it mashes many ideas from other movies well together (Groundhog Day, Pacific Rim).

The acting is pretty good, for an action flick as well as generally speaking. It was very refreshing to see Tom Cruise getting scared and ass-kicked, instead of being that unstoppable force he always plays in this genre. Emily Blunt was just as good as Cruise; I might even say that she was the true star of the film.

The action scenes are entertaining, the special effects are great, and above all, the editing. They cleverly took the concept of repeated days, and crafted some very gripping and funny moments of it.

I now regret not seeing this when it was in theater. Having watched it now, I think I like it more than X-Men: Days of Future Past and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (as far summer movies are concerned). I believe I like this just as much as I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy.

It proves that sci-fi isn't dead.

Watching the same day play out over and over again does lead to some repeated scenes, some of which aren't accompanied by the films sense of humorous deja vu jokes, but overall this is one of the best films of the year. I had an absolute blast watching it and I highly recommend it. My total score is an 8.5/10.

Cruise just pulls it off. He reminds me of Charlton Heston back in the 60s/70s who did a string of science fiction movies like Soylent Green, Omega Man and the classic Planet of the Apes. One hit after another. Starting with Minority Report, to War of the Worlds, Oblivion and now Edge of Tomorrow. Cruise just does it cool. It's like what the Interview with a Vampire director said: Cruise has a way of centering your attention at the screen. The special effects were terrific, sound design, and pacing. Blunt was great as well as Paxton. A few gripes I gotta mention though. First the story isn't original by any means. It also lacks substance and suffers because of the length of the movie. I expected more once Cruise and Blunt made it to France to find the Dam. The supporting actors were just too cheesy as well. Shouting military one liners we have all heard a million times. All that aside definitely a great watch for a slow evening on a weekend. Expand

I listened to the original novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and it really hooked me fast. The storytelling in the movie was different from the book. But both are very sharp and really keeps up a frantic pace through it all. However, the description of fear of war, the relationship between the main characters and the gripping ending was inimitable in the book or original for me.

Last but not least the awesome trailer soundtrack "This Is Not the End" by Fieldwork was totally skipped in the movie soundtrack? I really missed it as part of the movie or at least at the end of it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tom Cruise puts in a strong performance in this smart action thriller. The beach attack scene is very reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan. Very chaotic and gory at times, and the mimic aliens are genuinely original and scary. Whenever they're on screen you feel a palpable sense of threat. The only downside is the ending, which I felt was a bit lame. If the mimics are so intelligent and deadly and are able to control time then how come their most important position was so easily infiltrated? Overall still a great film. Expand

At one point, I was debating on giving it a 9. After many disappointing films this year, I would say this is easily the second best film of the year behind Captain America: Winter Soldier. The only reason this film doesn't get a perfect 10 is because some of the acting from the soldiers were poor, and the beginning and ending made no sense to me. Other than that, everything is top-notch! I loved how the movie was directed and written. I had to keep on guessing on when Tom Cruise's character was experiencing a scene for the first or the 100th time. Also, there was good humor in the film that had great timing and placed well in the story. I also really liked the design of the alien race. Those are some scary cool looking creatures that I would never want to meet. I would say that this film was on par with Minority Report, if you want to compare it with other Tom Cruise action films.

*BEGIN SPOILERS* Just because I want to mention the things that make no sense. The beginning. I don't clearly understand the general's motivations on sending Tom Cruise to the front lines of the war. Tom Cruise is pretty much the media spoke's person for the military, in which they're promoting their new infantry battle suits. At the beginning, you see Cruise's character getting interviewed and leading ads to say that anyone could wear one and pretty much kill tons of alien bad guys. Ok, so the general wants to send every abled body at the alien race, and he knows there's going to be a ton of casualties, which he will most likely be blamed for... so his plan is to order Tom Cruise to lead the charge, who has no combat experience. By doing this, Cruise will be blamed for the battle? That's doesn't make sense. If the general wants to make Cruise the bad guy, don't make him a martyr. He's already the poster child for the military. If he convinces millions to volunteer and fight the alien race through the media, then he's already going to be the first that's scrutinized... it is he who's saying the human race is unbeatable with his infantry suits. Next, if Cruise is so famous, how come no one recognizes him at the military base where they're prepping for the battle? The general ships him off to this base with his identity removed and a new rank of private. So naturally when Cruise explains to everyone there's been a mistake on who he is, no one believes him? Everyone and their mom's should recognize him... has the whole military been living under a rock? Do they not have TV or internet at military bases in the future? Anyways, once this confusing beginning is used to explain how Tom Cruise gets into this bad situation, the meat of the movie begins. From here on out, everything is fantastic! Cruise gets killed during the battle, but not before soaking in some alien blood that lets him reset to the day before the battle in which he dies. I was ready to give this film a 9 until the last 10 minutes happened. The film makers refused to let Cruise die at the end when finally defeating the main creature that's controlling the whole alien race. Basically, Cruise loses his ability to reset at one point, so at that point his choices become more crucial when it comes to surviving. This was great, because we needed to increase the stakes for our hero. Otherwise, the audience wouldn't care if he dies again. At the end, he blows up the main alien, but dies in the process. But as he's dieing, he soaks in some more alien blood to reset the day again... OK... so he wakes up prior to the battle ever happening (which is before he blows up the main alien) and everyone is celebrating that they killed the main creature which controls all the aliens. Uhhh... this makes absolutely no sense. If he reset to before he blew up the main alien, shouldn't he have to do it again? I guess they couldn't make this movie 3 hours long. Anyways, they shoehorn a happy ending in so Cruise lives rather than being an actual martyr... so he gets the girl at the end, which is suppose to be cute, because it was like they never met, based on the time he reset to one last time. Thank you Hollywood! *END SPOILERS*

Note: Did anyone else get annoyed by watching Emily Blunt do a seductive upward-dog yoga pose 4 times? It's like they wanted to take the most awkward shot in the whole film, and torture the audience with it over and over again.

Blunt plays Rita Vrataski, the enthralling, gorgeous exo-suited angel of death, and offers a good reason, for those on the edge of decision, to see this movie. The film takes a look at the idea of (near) infinite chances to overcome the impossible, and dives into the tedium of repetition required to turn a severe disadvantage around. This theme of repetition; however, may leave viewers, who aren't craving more augmented action, wishing Cage's self-termination would be permanent. The suit technology is a compelling blend of near-future military prototypes (that makes reference to real-life technology in the works) that avoids being over the top. Superb sound and visual effects keep things chaotic, but believable, as Cage and Vrataski drop into an endless hell.

Edge of Tomorrow is entertaining summer flick that will leave you catching your breath in satisfaction.

Edge of Tomorrow, despite spawning from the grimly titled light novel All You Need Is Kill and the poster's morbid catchphrase, is actually rather light hearted, playful and humorous. With gritty near apocalypse backdrop, the movie uses more mass appealing screenplay and, to its credit, manages to make what could be a redundant concept into an entertaining spectacle.

The movie's mind bending premise is actually an old one, but it's presented differently in sci-fi thriller, and thankfully it has made the transition to cinema pretty well. Tom Cruise plays William Cage, a military PR officer who is ungracefully demoted and literally dumped on battlefield. It's a fresh look for Cruise as he has always played the role of veteran badass for about a decade now. After his fateful first day, Cage is looped in a vicious cycle; he will unwittingly team up with the actual veteran badass, Rita Vrataski, played by Emily Blunt. Contrasting to the bleak situation, Cruise adds a touch of humor to his character. He is certainly proven as an action star, but the on-screen charisma is more prevalent when he tries to overcome the hardship and fails many times around.

Emily Blunt, who has experience in sci-fi genre from her role in Looper, is good choice for Rita. She has a bit of rugged nature from countless battles and she's attractive in her own way. The repeated clip of her doing push-up can also serve as a fitness video thumbnail. Chemistry for these two works for most part as Cage is frantically trying to find answer and Rita has been tempered by battlefield until the point of indifference. Although there could be room for the characters to develop further, they share some good moments and mature attraction. What's really surprising is how director Doug Liman presents the movie in humorous manner, it's consistently funny without being too slapstick. Pacing is really well done, editing helps getting the stagnant premise moves along rapidly. There's also a bit dark humor in recycling death and it's fascinating to see apocalypse concept taken without steroid of grittiness.

Edge of Tomorrow is a visual beast, there's more than enough action to rival its blockbuster peers. The motion is fluid and fast, yet it stays focused without spamming slow motion shots. Its extraterrestrial adversaries are looking organically menacing, a mix of liquid tentacle and rabies canine. Overall color tone is bluish gray, a recent trend in this sort of movie. Futuristic equipment are showcased with more plausible technology, but they also incorporate the grandiose blazing aspect one expects from Japanese animation. Everything looks amazing, and fortunately, especially so in 3D.

Unfortunately, the final act doesn't carry the same impact as the rest of the movie. It's nowhere near horrible, but it does feel underwhelming and far fetch. Not to mention, the action looks a bit murky compared to the flashy bits of the first half. It could also spend a little more time to establish the relationships between characters, but understandably the narrative requires more time to progress. It's not perfect, but Edge of Tomorrow is an excellent movie that respectfully takes its source and creates an alternate version which is more amusing, thrilling and, I'm going to say it, edgy.

It's really decent entertainment, but if you're looking for a really good sci-fi movie, you might want to pass on this one.
Matrix like aliens invade the planet (why?), US major without much or any combat training suddenly finds himself serving under a British CO and is dropped on the battlefield (why?), lots of questions go unanswered as there isn't all that much depth to the story, but the action kind of makes up for that. The ending is also rather unsatisfying, but seeing a different Tom Cruise for a change does have upsides.

Having seen the trailers, it just never interested me. Luckily, the good buzz surrounding it convinced me to see it and boy am I ever glad that it did. The film is funny, intriguing, well-acted, well-directed, and, ultimately, feels "fresh". The premise has been done before, the classic aliens invading Earth story and now they just added the the time looping element from Groundhog Day. No way this can be any good, right? Wrong. It may not be overally original on premise, but the way it handles these elements feels anything but tired and instead feels completely new, providing for a fun experience. Tom Cruise killed it in his role and Emily Blunt was just as great, if not better. In addition, the special effects are great and the action is done very well, never really growing tiresome. Heading into this one, I was worried that the time loop would become tiresome, but much like the material they have, it never felt tired. Every time he starts from the beginning, it feels fresh and like a totally new experience, even if it is not. The only two negatives I can really come up for this one are the beginning, which was a bit sketchy for me and had me questioning my decision to watch this one. Luckily, once the fllm kicks in, it is clearly much, much better. The ending is also a little iffy. It is not a total issue, but it bugs me enough to bring it up. If you have seen the film or when you see it, you will likely know what portion bugged me. Expand
