The acting is mediocre due to no chemistry amongst the leads, the visual monotone palette of dull browns add nothing to the theme (lets not mention the opening shots lifted from "Lost in Translation") and when the score plays it turns theThe acting is mediocre due to no chemistry amongst the leads, the visual monotone palette of dull browns add nothing to the theme (lets not mention the opening shots lifted from "Lost in Translation") and when the score plays it turns the film into a music video. The supporting roles are miscast: the mother is too young as a shouting caricature of over bearing mothers and then very understanding by the end because why not? The Mexican best friend (with obligatory "old school" Vato truck) feels like an actor manicured through and hair make up to convey his background instead of how he's directed and his dialogue. Alex's portrayal as the friendly neighborhood composer is cringeworthy as it rings so false. Sophie depiction as a privileged woman (scenes of her at work show her pointing at finished products of purses) that is at a crossroads in her life would have been interested if the actors felt ALIVE in the film, that's what you want in a character study film - not pretty shots of people in an "chic" ethnic neighborhood speaking dialogue that brings no wit, charm or engagement to the audience. This characters are about as tediously stale as they come. Lastly by the 3rd act all the characters make decision so as to give the finale a contrived showdown before the end credits. Having lived in Los Angeles all of my life and in Echo Park for numerous years, I can assure you this film is not a reflection of the Echo Park neighborhood, its population or culture...which would've been fine if this film had characters there were in slightest felt alive an engaging in their very own way. A neighborhood doesn't make a film - it's authentic characters (regardless of where they're from or where they're going) that make character study film work. This film gets a five purely because of its achievement visually (evening the editing could have used more work) for not much else.… Expand
