It's pretty light and predictable for Aardman, but the beautiful animation, solid pacing, and a few really funny jokes/gags still make this a fun time at the movies.

Wallace and Gromit was my childhood and I absolutely loved the Shaun the Sheep movie, film making at its best. Well you can imagine my disappointment at a movie that doesn’t even come close to the standard of Wallace and Gromit. I understand this film isn’t exactly aimed at my age group but if a 25 year old can enjoy Shaun the Sheep or Coco then there’s no excuse for Early Man.

The Bronze Age Vs The Stone Age in a game of football because the Stone Age were perfectly happy living in their little valley all quiet and content hunting rabbits and such, then the Bronze Age come along in their big bronze machines and fancy clothes, see all the potential to mine bronze in the little valley and boot out the Stone Age people cause it’s their land now and there’s nothing no one can do cause they’re the Bronze Age and obviously the superior race. Well the Stone Age led by Eddie Redmayne aren’t having any of this and challenge the Bronze Age to a game of football cause it’s a movie about football and who’s to say they didn’t play football back then. It could happen. Well I never really bought into the idea of this film and there lies problem one. All the other problems just kept on coming. Lazy writing and it’s not funny, honestly this doesn’t feel like Aardman, the attempts at jokes, particularly the slapstick humor has been put in the trailer as the selling point so don’t expect anything more than what you’ve seen in the trailer. Oh how can I trash a kids movie so harshly. How terrible am I? Rebecca you’re so heartless, well spoiler alert I don’t have a heart. Do you know what else doesn’t have a heart? This movie. Sorry Aardman Animations you let me down. I’m not going to be nice just because it’s a movie aimed at children. A good kids movie should have something adults can enjoy too. If you’re looking for a good animation to watch in the coming weeks unless you’re bringing young children then avoid this and see Coco instead. There’s no comparison. Not recommended. The 4/10 is for the animation alone, as much as I didn’t like Early Man I can’t fault the animation.

Pleasant enough animation from Nick Park - not quite up to the level of Wallace and Gromit, but decent nonetheless. It's mostly aimed at younger children but there's enough to keep adults engaged for the most part.

As a big fan of Aardman's films, I was very disapointed. This film doesn't even come close to their previous films but I can still appreciate the amazing claymation.

Yet I am not convinced by the story - to be fair I came with quite high expectations (Wallace & Gromit has always been brilliant). The idea of football match between stone age and bronze age in my opinion turned out being kind of dull and the story partly was cliched(prophecy, big football battle in the end, etc.). I think that an aardman film set in the stone age could potentially have been way more enthralling and humourous. I was mildly disappointed. Expand

As usual, the animation is spot on and fun, and the voice acting is really cartoonish, and those two things help Early Man from succumbing to a thin plot

There really isn't anything all that daring other than subverting a trope that if you are familiar with movies you will know what I am talking about. It's a safe movie. But safe doesn't mean that it is terrible. Far from it! There are plenty of laughs that both kids and parents can enjoy, or really anyone of any age can enjoy if they aren't a sad sack with no funny bones in their body, their trademark Claymation style still looks fantastic and well crafted in an ever growing 3D CGI animation world, with thumbprints and messing with the scale in all (although there are times that the characters are clearly animated on a green screen and keyed in, taking me out of the movie), and some fantastic voice acting all around, especially from Eddie Redmayne as the cheerful lead Dug and Tom Hiddleston as the ridiculous Frenchman bad guy Lord Nooth. It's not the most original movie in the world, nor will it present something deep with the core story. This movie is basically like a warm blanket. You wrap it around your body and relax in the cozy feeling of warmth around your body. Expand

Harmless but very unimpressive. The great effort put into the animation and the design doesn't fill the massive gaping hole left by bland characters and plot skewed too thin to fill an hour and a half.

Early Man is about a group of caveman who kicked out their valley by Lord Nooth and must challenge his bronze age society to a game Football/Soccer for the fate of there valley. Aardman as always has done a great job building the world in which characters interact. The comedy in this movie is perfect. However there some flaws in that moves really quickly. In conclusion if you like Aardman's work than you'll love the is film. Expand

From a critical standpoint, I know I should go into any movie with a bit of a blank slate. Still, there will occasionally be one of those actors, directors, or producers of which I am a huge fan. I feel like there cannot possibly be a bad product. However, Robert De Niro has taught me that for every “The Godfather Part 2”, there is an equal and opposite “The Comedian” – same artist, noticeably different results. Having said that, I have not yet had that experience with Nick Park and Aardman Animations. The same folks that gave us “Wallace & Grommit”, “Chicken Run” and “Flushed Away” have once again had me either lightly giggling or chuckling uncontrollably in the movie theater. Aardman’s clay animation techniques have transitioned quiet well into the digital age (as “Shaun the Sheep” has shown). This is balanced by the fact that Park and Aardman clearly know their roots as I could see things clearly influenced by “The Flintstones” and “The 2000 Year Old Man”. Along with the great storyline and comic dialogue is a great cast which includes Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”), Eddie Redmayne (“Les Misérables”), Roy Ayoade (“The IT Crowd”), and Timothy Spall (pretty much every Aardman film). Like the Aardman works that came prior to “Early Man”, I can assure that this movie will quickly become part of my home video collection with me quoting dialogue repeatedly Expand

As is the case with most Aardman films, "Early Man" rides high on its meticulously crafted stop-motion stylings and its kind-hearted comedic approach. This time around however, its the intangibles of the narrative that ultimately make this one of the lesser entries in the animation giant's oeuvre. Indeed, the cliched sports film beats and weaker thematic elements may ultimately render this out into something far less meaningful than desired, but that doesn't mean it's not a fun watch overall. A lot of clever and imaginative ideas Nick Park has used in Early Man to present the Stone Age which helped to elevate the humor a little bit. The story isn't a new one but it's not a problem at all; it's too simple and offers many sweet and contemporary messages. It's quiet surprising to see a movie nowadays uses its characters to convey some messages cleverly by merging these characters' arcs well with the story. Nick Park also presented a very good background for the cavemen in the first act of the movie which is - unfortunately - the shortest one. The second act is undoubtedly the weakest part of the movie; it was annoyingly fast paced, it came too early in this movie and didn't offer too much to rich the characters nor the setting of the Bronze Age, it also became very slow at its end and was had most of the silly and stupid jokes. The voice acting in Early Man is good specially from Tom Hiddleston who voiced the villain Lord Nooth and I also enjoyed Eddie Redmayne's voice and I found it very fresh to animated movies.

The story can get generic and predictable at points. The characters are bland and one-note. It has a good quantity of clichés (one of the most notable is the pet character: Hogdog. It is a boring cliché that every protagonist's pet is or behaves like a dog) and overall the writing gets pretty weak. One of its redeeming qualities, however is its comedy. If we judge it as a comedy, this movie is great. Most of the jokes are genuinely funny. Most jokes rely on slapstick which might not be everbody's cup of tea, but at least for me, it worked really well. Yeah, the humor can get bad at times, but for the most part, it is a really fun movie. Obviously the animation looks great, showing that even with its weaker films, Aardman always shows tons of effort in the animation and visuals. Overall, it is a really fun family film, but from Aardman we expect more than just "serviceable entertainment". Compared to other Aardman films this movie is really "childish". Don't expect a masterpiece, nor to be emotionally moved or blown away. I recommend it, though. Expand

This all applies toIf you've seen other Nick Park films then you'll know roughly what to expect - somewhat eccentric characters and a fairly quirky plot line delivered via stop motion animation, wich is very much family friendly viewing. This all applies to this film, so there's no change there. I didn't find it as amusing as the Wallace & Gromit films but then I suppose thats maybe a lot for this to live up to, not least as the characters are brand new (or really old, if you know what I mean - pardon the plot related pun).

Its an easy and enjoyable watch, with some pretty good examples of visual, slapstick comedy. I thought the voice acting was quite good but as I say it doesn't really compare to the studios previous works. I liked that the cave men were clearly portrayed as having their own flaws, which, no doubt, on a serious note, they would have had. I tend to enjoy the quirky/zaniness factor and the tongue-in-cheek sense that Nick Park films have and this film is no exception. I wouldn't say, however, that this is more memorable compared to other such films. However, I should point out that its very much football focussed, plot wise, so the football theme/references could get a bit boring if your not a fan of the sport, though it is pretty lighthearted and, suffice to say, not intended to be taken especially seriously (seriously, can you imagine cave people engaging on football matches?).

Overall this is a fun and amusing, family friendly watch which is worth a watch if your interested in the story, although it isn't better than the previous Aardman studios films.

I just felt that the story wasn’t very original or unique. In another Aardman movie like The Pirates, for example, the characters need to be pirates for the story to work. In Early Man, I feel like the characters could’ve been anything and the story would be pretty much the same. That was disappointing, especially since the concept of cavemen fighting gladiators sounded really cool and they’ve been working on this idea for over a decade, but it still had the traditional Aardman charm, comedy, and fantastic animation!
