A film that, to some extent, is difficult to name films. This is the picture that you look at, and every time it shows you something very unusual. Ryan Gosling did an excellent job with his role and gave the viewer a really memorable Driver. The soundtrack was also chosen perfectly, it may not be memorable at all, but without it there will not be that same atmosphere. For some of the R-rated scenes, the director of those very scenes did an excellent job and made them so memorable that for many, many years you will probably remember them (but not repeat them). The best Refn movie so far. This is a well done action movie where a silent and misterious driver goes through various vicissitudes that lead him to deal with a shady group of criminals. Soundtrack is stunning as every shot that Refn makes.

so good.
there are some technical issues with this movie (that actually really rare audience would care and notice so we skip) but a great experience.
this is the type of movies you love to see again and again in time.

Gosling plays his character as weirdly smug and the pacing seems deliberately slow in a way that is only annoying. Overall, the film favors style over real substance, art over literacy. Expand

The violence when it comes half way through is sudden, brutal, and gory, and unfortunately gets repeated again and again. I would have preferred more car chases.

The ending goes counter to what we are led to believe will happen: the hero, up to then ahead of the violence, turns his back on certain attack, and then we get a long, long teasing shot of him. Is he dead, is he alive? There are many slow mo shots, and the one in an elevator is particularly head shakingly drawn out.

The biggest sin is to give Carey Mulligan little to do except look pained and imprisoned. The second biggest sin is to cram Christina Hendricks into Jeans and leotards, and then to have the camera follow her. I know, I know, it's meant to be realistic. Gosling does his patented terse, coiled spring, maimed persona, and it works.

Other than the violence, it is straight down the middle film noir. It was definitely worth seeing. But there are some major logical problems with the story (e.g., organized crime bosses who are constantly unguarded and who do all their own dirty work or the main character, who is one step ahead of everybody until the end, when something happens that everyone but him knows is going to happen). Those logical story issues aside, it is a highly stylized film that is really fun to watch. Gosling is great in the movie, and there are great supporting performances by Albert Brooks and Carrie Mulligan. But the music is (with one distinct exception) so annoyingly out of place that it is distracting in a way that one would not have expected from an otherwise well crafted film. Expand

The lighting and overall compositions give the film a kind of depth of meaning that is seldom seen in mainstream films anymore. Having said all that, I found the ending a tad unsatisfying and I have to admit that the main character's laconic-ism got a little annoying towards the end! Okay, yes, his actions and facial expressions (and, again, the compositions) speak volumes about his interior angst but my goodness at some point we need some actual (cathartic) expression as well! Still, loved it.... Expand

People just stare at each other for what seems like hours before they speak, if they speak at all. I thought the film was going to be driving and chase scenes, and there were a couple of those, but it is mostly a quasi mob movie. It is VERY slow in parts. It is strange seeing Albert Brooks in a mobster role. Every time he spoke I thought of the father fish in Finding Nemo! All the actors, including Brooks, do a good job, however. There were some great scenes in the movie (the opening drive sequence, the motel shoot-out), and some ridiculous scenes (the mask, some of the dialogue, the music/songs, the elevator kiss, people's reactions to things), but at least the movie is different and not the usual predictable Hollywood fair. Lastly, this is a very violent, gory movie. It goes from very serene to explosive quickly. Overall I recommend it, the good outweighs the bad. Expand

I'm still trying to figure out if it's a film I really like. It's definitely more an art house film so there will be plenty of people expecting a straight up car chase movie and this won't be for them. But it's an interesting take on an action film and contrary to others I think the acting was excellent. The long pauses are supposed to be uncomfortable. The most disturbing thing of all was the young boy sitting through the most violent movie I've seen in a long time if ever. I cannot believe parents (who were warned by staff) would ever bring their child to this movie. The violence was too much for me, In Canada this is not R rated - and I don't know what would be if this isn't. Expand

The qualms I found with the movie is that it didn't do anything spectacular or out of the ordinary, save for what makes it stand out amongst today's action movies: It wasn't very reliant upon special effects. The special effects that were there, such as the few scenes of violence and some of the car chase and cars flipping around, were done very realistically and had a definite feel of rawness that make it stand out amongst its peers. Again, as noted, it is a good film: Nothing GREAT and nothing to really write home about. The soundtrack has a very 80's feel to it despite the mise en scene implying that the film takes place in ~90's. There are much better movies, such as Collateral or Le Samourai, so check those out before this one. Expand

"Drive" is different. It's a modern western with extremely violent death scenes. It reminded me of Sergio Leone's westerns with the nameless hero at center, cleaning up the mess left behind by very bad people.

While Eastwood's Blondie was a silent type without expression, but still likeable, Gosling's nameless hero is pretty silent, but impressively expressive at the same time. He goes through all the motions with real emotion, and even though none of his back story appears, we know that he has a dark past that has driven him into the underworld, into hiding from something terrible, something that always comes back to haunt him. Albert Brooks is surprisingly effective as a cold, cold bastard. I admit getting a little tired of Carey Mulligan, that sweet wife with the sweet kid, and an unfortunate husband. However, I understood why she was important. The characters seemed emotionally invested in each other, which added context to the action. And what an action. The driving was not disappointing, nor the heavy brutality of the killings, which were just as ugly as brutal as killings must be. Nothing attractive about the violence in this film.

When watching Ryan Gosling, I feel there is finally an actor comparable with the great Jimmy Stewart. He can both act sweet and cruel, desperate and calm, and at every moment believable. Without Gosling, this would have been just another action movie about a loner seeking justice in an unjust world.

The Driver had a professional driver (Ryan O Neal) who went by the name Driver. He was a loner working the existential streets of his noirish nighttime city. But he had minimal interests in other human beings. Here is where Drive amps up the same story. Cue the Michael Mann film Thief, full of rain slicked streets and scumbag gangsters that out hero becomes involved with. Drive gives us the same scenario but jazzes it up with Alan Ladd's knight in shining armor. I like the pastiche and Refin's not totally out of his element in American, though his Danish film series Pusher has more life and humor in them. In The Driver, our hero just wants to test himself, ala Jef in Le Samourai, Melville's incredibly influential noir of the mid 60's . Drive's hero picks up where Ladd and Thief's James Cann left off. His attraction to a woman makes him willing to lose everything. Love will do that to our hero, but unlike the brilliant Le Samourai, the film that broke the mold, Drive's hero's love is all too human. A nice romp through the nighttime streets and another look at a crime ridden film that is absolutely copless. Expand

"Drive" is the story of a Hollywood stunt driver (Ryan Gosling) by day, who offers his specialized abilities as a getaway driver-for-hire in the criminal underworld by night. He finds himself a target after agreeing to aid the husband of his beautiful neighbor, Irene (Carey Mulligan). When the job falls apart, the only way he can keep Irene and her son alive is to do what he does best-Drive.
"Drive" is a fine action/thriller film that is light on the storyline and dialog (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), and heavy on highly-stylized action scenes with intense moments of violence. Ryan Gosling is fantastic as usual, but I cannot get past Albert Brooks part as a complete miscast. Perhaps expectations were too high going into the viewing, because outside of Ryan's performance, I just don't think there is anything really special here.

Cheap-night Tuesday and the theatre is mostly empty. This won't have the legs to run two weeks. People walk out. Some can't wait to leave. This ain't no disco. This ain't no date movie. The worst piece of garbage I ever saw, someone mutters. Cold, brutal violence madly erupts from a sluggish plot. This ain't no party. This ain't no Notebook. Not a lot of so-called entertaining violence here. You can't cheer on the brutality. It's not fun. It's ugly and disgusting and still unreal. This ain't no fooling around. And when the driver, Goseling, an anti-social psychotic, maniacally stomps on the hit-man in the elevator to the song "Skull Crushing", then we see, as does his turned-on/horrified woman friend, just how compulsive, abject and contagious the violence is. This is a revenge movie without the romantic heroics. This is an insult to mindless escapism and to intelligence alike. And, although it delivers some interesting imagery and exceptional acting, it is ultimately a swollen-headed exercise in futility. Disingenuous and undignified. It could have been fa-fa-far better.

I found myself tapping along to Kavinsky's Nightcall after an initially musically sluggish but perfectly fitting pulse. The perfect song was chosen to emphasise the "feel good" vibe of the usual 80s montage. Perhaps to counteract the strange warm fuzzy sentiments that it landed on with Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan's characters, the overtly masculine movie could have gone for greater romance. You spend the entire duration of the movie waiting for a climax that never comes. The film is very well crafted, but it sacrifices the potential to be enjoyed to make a creative statement that could really only be appreciated in retrospect. A funner movie that better fit its title would have been far more preferable, when the film ends it comes off as disappointing and incomplete. It's obviously that it finds influence in Taxi Driver and aims to be a close parallel to it, a mark that it admittedly hits. The mistake of this film was it's decision to deliberately mislead you into expecting something action packed, or at least with more driving. Expand

Ryan Gosling is into cars: he's a mechanic, a stunt driver and a getaway driver.
But, this film is not a high-energy, action heist flick. It's a slow, gloomy, violent crime drama. His ill-fated attraction to Carey Mulligan sets the unfortunate circumstances in motion, again, very slowly. Gosling plays what he's best known for: a brooding and intense man of few words, but it's Albert Brooks (cast against his comic type as a mob boss) who's the most fun. Director Nicolas Winding Refn loves these intense films ("Valhalla Rising" was his last), but this one is trying too hard to be modern noir and feels heavy-handed and pretentious. Still, it's a darkly compelling experience.

The very beginning of the movie was exiting and captivating. I really got into it, and I couldn't wait to see the rest. Then, unexpectedly, it really, really, I mean really slows down. It's a slow movie, with barely two drive scenes. The description that I read about '' Drive '' says : '' A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong ''. Well that main event starts approximately around 50 minutes after the film debuted. This film is a little bit like if you took the boring parts (when their aren't killing anyone, their life situation) form an assassin, driver, killer, etc, and made a movie about it. Sure, the acting was good (big thumbs up for Ryan Gosling, I was impressed by his performance), the 70 's - 80 's music was cool and the cinematography was excellent. It's the kind of movie were all the snobby critics will give it a high score. Also, there were a few violent scenes, which were surprisingly bloody and brutal. I think that everybody should give it a try. If you don't get art house films, then you will really hate this. I only saw the movie once, but if I see it again, I will probably like it more. I think it's better a second viewing, because after seeing this, I left with nothing and I wasn't sure what I saw. The thing that bothers me the most is the people who liked this movie are getting overprotective and start to insult others by telling them that they don't know cinema, that they should watch '' Transformers '' instead, blah blah blah. Not everybody in the world will like this movie, it's impossible. Everybody was their own opinion. I'm giving it a 6, because while watching this movie I got a great feeling for some reason, yes i'm a little bit disappointed, yes most of the parts were boring, but everything is well done (the acting, etc). Has for the drama, it was a success. Expand

I certainly expected more driving, given the title and trailer. There was no sex, and the foul language, which I generally appreciate, seemed forced and unnatural. The acting was good not great. In the end I didn't really care about any of the characters. I love violent action and drama movies, and I had high hopes for this one, but I left the theater feeling shorted. I guess I'm in the minority on this one, given the reviews. Expand

I'll summarize this movie in a few short words: The actors are great. The music is fantastic. The camera is excellent. The rest is just for idiots.

But instead of horses, Ryan Gosling has horsepower, and in spite of the brutal cinematic violence, this film has turned Ryan Gosling into a first-class superstar and sex symbol. He plays this character with understated perfection--he is calm, unflappable, and fiercely focused; he is a predator who is ready to swoop down on his enemies, and he never carries a gun. He just drives. But in spite of the fact that he is gainfully employed as both a garage mechanic and a Hollywood stuntman, Gosling's character is inexplicably attracted to the dark underworld of crime, and he has a third job as a getaway driver. The violent crime scenes are almost too hard to watch, and except for the opening scene and one later scene, the police are strangely absent as the driver or the "kid" goes on a killing rampage to protect the woman he has accidentally fallen in love with. He becomes more murderous than the most hardened mobsters, and their underestimation of who he is and what he can do means that they are doomed. But as perfect as Gosling is in this role, the film goes awry with an overload of violence that leads the viewer nowhere. The ending is inconclusive, leaving many loose ends that can never be tied up and failing to deliver a philosophy or a clear finale. Like the kid, this film just wants to drive. Nowhere. But it's great to watch Ryan Gosling in brilliant control of this vehicle. Expand

The pacing seemed to match Driver's style: from slick and speedy to outright stationary at points, getting away with it in the end but at somewhat of a cost. Scenes seemed like panes from a graphic novel at times. The major off-putting aspect of the film was the bizarre music selection. The tune for the main titles was promising, but during the times when the music swelled after that, I tended to get a bit confused. While it did create a strong emotional tag that was cashed in at the end, College's "A Real Hero" was just a weird musical choice for this flick's showcase song. Other than that, I'd definitely recommend seeing this movie at extended run venues or eventually DVD/VOD rental. Expand

Gosling's acting isn't that astonishing to me (althrough I like his other performances), the plot is inconsistent and overally I find this movie somewhere in the middle, with a few interesting moments.
I kept on sitting and waiting for the movie to start. And then the credits rolled...

The problem I had with 'Drive', along with many other movies is that the trailer tells the whole story. There's nothing more to unfold than what we can see before sitting in the theatre. And that's just not enough for me.

From the purple title fonts to the music, this film was more a ripoff of 80's cheese than something original. The plot was mediocre and stolen from at least a couple movies already made with Jason Statham. I can only explain Ron Perlman in Hollywood by the Jewishness of his last name as he seems to make movies into B movies with his very presence. Gossling's character is peculiar enough to make the movie watchable and shares so few words with Mulligan's character that if Drive 2 ever were to get made I'm sure we'd learn that their both aliens that actually communicate with their minds. Brian Cranston from the incredible Breaking Bad series does his part as a likable character, but as with the rest of the characters seems underdeveloped. The action won't make you spill your popcorn. It's an ok movie, but certainly not worthy of the very good reviews it has gotten by critics. Expand

The protagonist is a man with no name, a driver that lives for himself and has a look as if he was looking for something. He has some kind of a double personality, a secret life. At day he works as a stuntman in car racing films, during night he provides an aid for criminals that is worthy of applause: he is the transport in which the robbers escape; but the life to him seems empty. The driver will find a way of ending his emptiness by the path of love. And that is the gate for changing his life and a little bit of the world. Drive has some details of Martin Scorsese´s filmography: first Ryan Gosling is like the new Robert DeNiro. Second, there are some sequences that seem to be from Scorsese, the attack in the parking zone, the magnificent scene of the elevator, the car crashing and the ending. Third the protagonist has the need of discover a new life. This picture has an amazing script and montage, the score A Real Hero contributes to the feeling that wants to provoke this film, but the crown is the strong performance of Ryan Gosling (maybe his best after Stay). Beside that this film will always be a shadow of Taxi Driver; I really recommend it, because it is a reinvention of the local hero. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished watching this film, about an hour ago. I was excited to view this film for the 1st time, because it was so highly acclaimed by many, many critics. Unfortunately, it didn't lived up to the raves & praises that the critics gave the film. 1st off is Ryan Gosling's character, a very dull, soul less shell of a human being. Who's only real talent in life, is to stunt drive at high velocity. He's a Hollywood movie stunt man by day & a heist wheel man by night. His connection to these world is his "mentor." (played by Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston) One day Ryan Gosling meets his next door neighbor (played by Carey Mulligan) who he immediately falls in love with. Little did he know, this little lady was married & her husband was gonna arrive home from prison within a week. When the husband arrives, things seem to dull out again & go back to normal. Until one night when Ryan was pulling into his garage, to go home after work. He see's his neighbor's husband on the floor bleeding profoundly from the beating he received, from the two guys walking towards their car. It turns out, his neighbor's hubby owed the mob 20,000 large, they also threatened to kill his wife & kid if he (the husband) didn't rob a pawn shop by Friday. So, because Ryan Gosling was in love with his neighbor, he agreed to help him (the husband) with the heist. The plot is pretty thin, not too mention the film is very, very slow. The action happens quite rapidly, when it happens. That it doesn't compensate at all, for the film's slow pace. Not to mention, the ending was a total let down. I really, really wanted to like this film. Too bad it didn't move me, the way "Kill Bill" did or "Layer Cake" or "The Professional". All I can tell you is that this, could of been so much more. It is all about meeting someone for the first time, maybe that's why it is flattering.

Drive

Nikolaj Winding Refn is an oddball figure when it comes to his films. There is an incredible amount of love that he has for his films, just as we do. To be honest, I didn't get the film at first. Neither do I now. I still find it upsetting. Unstable, to be precise. There's a lot that I don't get. There's a lot that I love. The most I love about the film is the space. Never has any filmmaker understood the space between the characters. And not just with other characters, but us too. The car too.

And what better way to shoot an action film then respecting that space, drawing a sound and clear boundary, not pushing but marking it. And remember it is not a punch in or punch out or car chase action, it is in its pure physical action form. It could be a realization that makes you turn, change your path or open your way or move past someone without saying. These charismatic and yet intimate sequences that spirals the most heartwarming friendship between a boy and a girl, is the biggest win for me.

And for a minute there, I thought it is Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan slow dancing in their livelihood. But it is Gosling and anyone for that matter. Even someone shady as Oscar Issac is given a second chance and Bryan Cranston a statutory warning. So it is Gosling both charging this electrifying Hollywood night and a warm sunny morning. The balance is in his hands. And his hands on the wheel. Drive is a much more controlled ride then it is out of control. And still it doesn't remains to be a safe, recommended one. I find myself wearing two seat belts, for the questionable structure that bounces up and down.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I just came home from watching a late night screening of this film. First thing off the bat, there was almost no dialogue between the protagonist and central characters. Even the "Bad Guys" and side characters seemed to have more dialogue. In general there was barely any dialogue in the entire movie, as a matter of fact. Does that take away from movie? That is debatable. This film seems to portray crime in a very negative light, from my perspective. The beginning is mellow and shows the inherent goodwill of the protagonist "Driver", and his attempts to protect those he cares about. The film really did a good job creating the bonds between these characters - the driver, Irene and her son. Halfway through the movie, I was thinking "Wow, they've set this up well. Here comes the action part." I was thinking that much like other thrillers like "Taken", the back story had been set up and the movie would become more fast-paced. After all, it's supposed to be an action movie. To my dismay, it was still slow, not much action but very gruesome. If you're looking for your standard popcorn action movie this is simply not it. The ending of this movie was sudden and left many loose ends. The movie had a message, but it wasn't much to end on. Secondly, the ending was very anti-climatic and dull. Overall, I found this movie entertaining. The soundtrack always seemed to fit in nicely, the cinematography, and slow motion sequences were great. But, ultimately it left something to be desired. Left the theater with a mixed "meh" feeling. 6/10 Expand

I recall watching this film with a buddy of mine and reaching the credits only for both of us to look over at eachother with our mouths open wide in shock. "What the heck was that? That was terrible." My friend said loudly. He was totally outraged at how bizzarely boring the whole film had been and I was utterly blown away by the fact that it was obvious someone had found a short story at some point before the first script was written and had tried to adapt it to a screenplay without realizing it was a total DOA mess. The characters are dull, lifeless. Ryan Goslings performance is lukewarm at best. The soundtrack wasn't even memorable outside of one decent credit roller song at the end. Though the action scenes are shot well, the rest of the film outside of those scenes just falls flat in terms of emotional conveyance. The romance between the two main characters is unbelievable and creepy. All of their scenes together are terribly awkward as well. The main antagonists end up just being some old italian mob guys who just happen to be involved. The plot is as shallow as they come and no elements seem to exist in "Drive" that would or could ever place it beyond or above completely mediocre. Could've been made by a college film student with a smaller budget. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A silly story is a silly story no matter how many technical flourishes a director uses to dress it up. Cool premise though... the guy is a gifted driver. Unfortunately we learn this mostly through exposition "You should see this kid drive!" The actual stunt driving is pretty tame, and whenever some really crazy stunt driver type stuff is on the screen, it's superfluous. For example, pulling a 180 to put his car nose to nose with a pursuer (forcing him to then drive backwards) creates no actual advantage. It actually makes his position worse. Granted, after the backwards bit, the bad guys wreck, but not in a way that would have been forseeable...it just works out that way. The plot... bad mob guys want their stolen money back has been done to death and done better. I get what the director was going for, with the slow, deliberate pacing juxtaposed against unexpected gory bursts. The Coen brothers have much more fun with it, and are much better at it. Expand

After the interesting and unusual five minute opening (by FAR the best 5 minutes of the movie) this embarrassing vehicle for a usually excellent actor (Gosling) becomes an unintentionally funny car wreck. Ridiculously long pregnant pauses in dialogue (intended to be deep and thoughtful), ......possibly the stupidest soundtrack of all-time, and corny as can be bad guys (what is with the Oscar buzz for Brooks?!?), this terribly miss-titled mess should have been called STAB instead of DRIVE, since there are barely any cool driving scenes at all (in a film about a Hollywood stunt drive), and someone gets stabbed in some over-the-top way about every 5 minutes during the last third of this dog. Worst film I've seen since Shyamalan's The Happening and a MAJOR disappointment. Expand

The movieThe greatest flaw of "Drive" is not it's obscenely short script, nor is it how cliche and mundane the film is. The biggest flaw is certainly not the acting or cinematography, both are terrific- they make the movie almost bearable. The movie may lack plot, pace and believability. But no- the biggest flaw is far greater than the sum of its parts. It is the desperation. The immense attempt that a young director makes to lure the audience. Pulsing techno, old school pauses that exist for their own sake, slow motion music-video-esk shots that occur at random moments. They are all meaningless. A movie without a plot cannot be saved by artsy fillers. They fail to captivate and create a bigger problem and a larger distraction than the mundane plot does from the unrealistic nature of the film. Expand

It is decent to begin with and makes you wonder who the main protagonist is, but it slowly turns into a bland, boring, and way too long movie. The main problem I had was that the main character doesn't speak. You can't build a connection with him. There was also an excessive use of blood. I love action movies with blood, but this is way overboard. The only reason people watched it was because all girls go crazy over Ryan Gosling. Expand

I did not enjoy it, but not because it was different. The rhythm is uneven, the score good but soundtrack doesn't work. The script clearly aims for "gritty and real" rather than the holywoodish "witty and snappy" but the result is boring instead of interesting. The title is misleading because there is very little actual street driving, people should know that. But really, for me, the key element for the story to work which is the love between the two main characters is just never credible. Without a foundation, no building can remain standing, no matter how pretty the curtains or how different the layout is. Expand

Very, very slow paced movie and overall very boring to watch. A few good scenes here and there are not enough to save this movie from being tedious to watch.

I was sitting there waiting for something to happen and it just never did. I was more entertained by "Gigli" and critics hated that movie. The movie did have a few good great scenes. For example the first scene was AMAZING and I thought the movie was going to be great but then there were like 6 bad scenes and another good scene. The movie had maybe 3 good scenes (the first chase scene, the elevator scene, and the crash scene at the beach) but it was not worth the other 2 hours or your money. Stay away and wait for the DVD. Slow, boring, predictable, horrible script, bad music and sound editing, poor acting... That about sums up what I can honestly say is the worst movie I have seen since Joe and the Volcano. And ever patron in the theater seemed to be of the same opinion. IF you must see it, wait for it to come out on pay per view so you can turn it off in the comfort of your own home. Like some other have said, the opening scene is very well done, and sets the stage for an action-thriller. I thought the movie would play more on the Jekyll-Hyde motif -- a stunt driver by day and an off duty getaway driver for heists. Instead he meets "the girl" 5 minutes into the movie and soon we see him playing "temporary step dad" to her son. These scenes with the three of them seem to go on forever and at the same time go nowhere. What follows is an array of confusing and brutally violent scenes, with the love story taking a back seat. In sum, the story is not well developed...period. I suspect the "art lovers" giving this movie high ratings are the type who like to go to art galleries to see paintings with random splotches. If that's your thing, enjoy! I will give props to Gosling -- he was very intriguing from the opening but unfortunately wasn't given the story to build his character on. Expand

Terrible acting, gratuitous violence and very few chase scenes. The script must have been put together by a committee and directed by an amateur. This movie didn't deserve a 79 Metacritic score. It deserved 7.9.

Firstly,The opening scene from Nicolas Refn's "Drive", in which Gosling's character is working as a getaway driver, set the premise for what I thought would be a great film. Instead, it marked the pinnacle of its discontinued merit. Firstly, throughout the movie it was apparent that the director was attempting to create a quasi-80's film feel; from the pink cursive font (Dirty Dancing, Risky Business) to the intermittently permeating synthetic music, to the formulaic and overly used montage scenes. Refn's use of these cliched devices contributed to a consistent tone of awkwardness and banality. Secondly, from the cinematographic style, to the multiple metaphors and motifs, to the utilization of silence as a recurring theme, to the character development; all felt forced into the film and thoughtlessly used. It is clear that Refn understood that all of these cinematic elements were necessary for a powerful film, and yet used them too frequently and without subtlety. Lastly, while it seems that Refn often attempted to emphasize silence and characterize through plain dialogue, it often left many scenes feeling unnecessary and artificial. I understand what ideas Refn might have been attempting to convey by directing Drive, but instead of providing insight into the human condition, he ended up making a movie that was chaotic and which appeared messy on many levels. Perhaps Refn was inspired to put too much into one feature length film, or perhaps he just could not decide what kind of movie he wanted to make, but Drive turned out to be unsubtle, fragmented, and lacking the necessary flow to allow the viewer to achieve the necessary; suspension of disbelief. I was really excited when I saw the preview for this film, an action thriller with a terrific cast is right up my ally, unfortunately, the three minutes of action in the trailer, showed the only decent action in the entire film. Ryan GoslingI was really excited when I saw the preview for this film, an action thriller with a terrific cast is right up my ally, unfortunately, the three minutes of action in the trailer, showed the only decent action in the entire film. Ryan Gosling plays a Hollywood stunt man, who moonlights as a getaway driver, in a story that is both eerily similar to and nothing like The Transporter. The driver in this film is just as picky and OCD as Jason Statham's character in the Transporter, but that's where the similarities end. After a nice opening, this film quickly turns into some noir love story, that really focuses more on the conflicted driver, than on anything else, making this one boring film. How can a film company be allowed to put out an action fueled trailer for a film like this, which is anything but exciting. The clever advertising devils got me again, but facts are facts, and no trailer or good looking star can hide the fact that this movie was terrible. Expand

The first scene is good, and might even be great if it weren't followed by 90 minutes of frustrating, boring (and, occasionally, nauseating) cinema. The acting feels like it tries to be minimalistic, pensive, and mysterious; it come off as dull, wooden, and self-important. The movie doesn't go anywhere and doesn't say anything, and remains a "style over substance" effort. Unfortunately, even the style is confusing at best: the pink lipstick credits, the Casio synth sound, the cheesy "Thunderdome"-style power ballad... if this movie had been made in the 80s, it might have some B-movie credibility. As a movie made 20 years after the 80s ended, Drive feels bewildering and artificial. And that's not even to say anything about the degrading, absurd violence; you don't have to be "faint of heart" to be disgusted with the blood spillage in Drive.

I rarely have such a visceral reaction to a movie as I did with Drive. I could not for the life of me understand why such a movie is even made, as it is an exercise in empty style... and a D effort at that.
