Sean Connery fits amazingly in the role, establishing himself as James Bond within the first few moments of the film. The film has a strong plot, and although it does touch on the improbable many times over, this is what makes a film like this fun. The fact that this film is able to make such an absurd and insane plot work is a testament to its timeliness. At its core, James Bond is an adventure story with underscores of science fiction and is certainly a film that requires a certain suspension of disbelief. https://latetothegame.blog/2019/01/03/key-movies-of-my-life-james-bond-edition-dr-no-1962/ Expand

Dr No is a quick and fun movie that doesn't grow stale like other films in the franchise. To me, It's the gatekeeper of the Good to Great films. So if I consider it better than Dr No, which I believe is a good film, then I typically hold the compared film in high regard. Expand

solid movie. Of course you need to have in mind, that this movie is from the early 60s, so some of the elements of the movie are not very professional. Anyway the location is interesting and Sean Connery is cool

Having watched 25 Bonds from Dr.No to Spectre, I place Dr. No at 7/25.

Whatever this movie did, the immediate sequels did it better. But that doesn't mean that it's not fascinating to see. Dr. No doesn't shine nearly as much as later ones, but it has that feeling of novelty, of invention, of being a first at everything.

Several scenes are iconic and established so much about the series. History was made here.

Of course, some of it is a little janky, especially the action and some of the final fight. Yet besides the historical aspect and the heritage it created, it's an entirely solid movie in its own right, and all the wit, the Bondness, Connery putting the suit for the first time, it's all quite magical. The novelty is truly unique, it's the first Villain, the first Evil Lair, the first World Conquest Plan, the first Bond Girl, the first "Bond, James Bond"...and much more.

A must-see for Bond fans, a good movie in its own right, and a great first step in a very grand world.

Ian Fleming wanted to boost the popularity and (brand) recognition. He sold the rights for Casino Royale and a TV movie staring Barry Nelson was made. It is a bastardized American version and Ian Fleming regretted it. It is no surprise that it is forgotten outside being an obscure point of James Bond trivia. But lets go back to this movie. It is the first movie and they have not perfected the formula that everyone knows for James Bond movies yet. This might sound too negative as it is a good James Bond movie. I mean that all the hallmarks and staples have not be developed, optimized or were later additions. For example there is no Q who will start appearing from the next movie onward and James Bond is also not like he would become later on. Even Sean Connery needed some time to develop his most famous role to the legendary recognition. Again this does not mean it is bad and I mention it only because it is unlikely that this will be your first movie in the franchise. For those who don't know: James Bond codename 007 is an MI6 agent/spy and one of the best in the business. He is also a gentleman, dandy, womanizer and master of many talents / professions. It is a fictional, romanticized fantasy of spy movies and the formula is a timeless classic. In his debut movie he is tasked with an investigation on Jamaica as the local chief of MI6 and his secretary were killed. Before their dead they themselves investigated of unknown radio signals jamming the launching of rockets. So starts the story. It is engaging and features a lot what makes the franchise great. The actors deliver also a good performance. We have Sean Connery who will become a legend in his most famous role. He delivers but will also improve in later movies. Fun fact: He wanted not to be limited to just be James Bond and I think he succeeded as he had many other remarkable roles. Ursula Andress as Honey Rider is unforgotten and has one of the most recognized scenes in the franchise. Joseph Wiseman as Dr. No is an excellent antagonist and started the list of enjoyable great villains. I think only Batman has a better rouges gallery than James Bond. The actors in combination with the director made this an enjoyable movie. The scenery and pacing is great. The soundtracks of the James bond movies are always excellent. I enjoyed listening to the CD with all title-songs and the James Bond theme is a timeless classic. I have heard it so often and still enjoy it ever time I watch a James Bond movie. Overall this is a really good start for the franchise. It is however not one of the best movies in the franchise and other movies optimized the formula. I know this is an unfair comparison but also valid. Expand

Dr No is one of the golden treasures, along with Goldfinger and From Russia with Love. Dr No also happened to start this great series off, and with great style and panache. It is very cleverly conceived, and remains true to the essence of the novels. The cinematography and locations are stunning, and the music and theme song are wonderful. The action sequences are simply terrific, the atmosphere is appropriately exotic and the humour displayed is very witty. The dialogue is great, the plot is well done and the direction is solid. Ursula Andress couldn't have asked for a better entrance, while the ever suave and charismatic Sean Connery is perfect as the dashing, debonair and ruthless title character. Overall, a great start to a great series on the whole. 10/10 Bethany Cox Expand

The Jamaican local is always gorgeous to look at as well as the first Bond girl ever…Honey Rider. Plus, it also gave us one of the most iconic theme tunes in cinematic history courtesy of one of my favorite film composers of all time…John Barry.

Young and Connery are onto something here, who knows how long will it last(!), for now it is a sight to behold.

Dr. No

Young gives this everlasting legacy, the perfect introduction it required, a bit briskly and awful lot of raunchy. This mixture of genre that was present in Ian Fleming's book, is amped up to a cinematic level with a vocab so common and physically connective to the audience that it does reach to places where your usual projection doesn't. And since the inception of this franchise, ergo, this chapter, it didn't practically see the global phenomenon that it will spiral out in later years. And what has been fascinating about the franchise is how connected it is to the art behind the project that despite of getting an attention as such, the commercial aspect of this infamous character doesn't affect the quality of its vocab.

The storyline, even to this day, is kept above all the box office numbers, and is probably why this is one of those rare banners that holds up with time. Terence Young, the director, isn't bringing anything new on the table, but his skills on jumping from one sequence to another with a linear track, following only its lead character is a bold risk that pays off well in here. Usually, such a narration can be off putting or felt overridden, but with Sean Connery's perspective that we, as an audience, share, the risks are communicated and the thrills feared.

Speaking of whom, Connery started the dialogue deliveries to be delivered with a panache that mostly comes from his body language than his drunken yet firm voice. There is a smoothness on the punches he punches and physical acts shot in one shot, these little moments are much more valuable than the tricks, he keeps pulling out of his awe-gasping gadgets. With only one weak link of antagonist called Dr. No- primarily because he has very little skin in the game- Connery is the best asset of London's Secret Service.

The born of a cinema symbol

In this film, the first of the Bond franchise, we see how the British secret agent going to the Bahamas in order to investigate the mysterious Dr. No, which believed to be responsible for the disappearance of several people, including another agent.

This film is much simpler than other movies that followed, but contains one of the most iconic scenes of the franchise: the first appearance of Bond, sitting at the table of baccarat, saying his staff "Bond ... James Bond". Since then, we repeatedly hear this presentation that everyone (even those who don't appreciate the character) associate today to the British agent. Directed by Terence Young, the film features Sean Connery as Bond, in a role that will immortalize him. The actor shares the scene with Ursula Andress, the first "Bond-girl" (It was the biggest role of her career, followed by a series of participation's in B movies and in another Bond film, made on the sidelines of the official franchise). Bernard Lee and Lois Maxwell also here begin their passage through the franchise as M, head of British intelligence, and his secretary, Miss Moneypenny.

This movie, despite being simpler and not having the commercial apparatus of next films, is still a classic that is at the heart of any Bond fan. Thus was born one of the longest, lasting and fruitful film franchises ever.

The use of some twists, brilliant dialogues, sumptuous set designs, breathtaking pursuits and intriguing expedients, Ursula Andress as the Bond girl and a good Sean Connery. A soundtrack worthy of any Oscar. A classic action/spy film. Dr. No is a formidable villain, but the "dragon" scene is ridiculous. Beautiful instead the one of the casino, where our spy plays baccarat, or to be exact Chemin-de-fer (https://casino.guru/baccarat-rules-strategy-guide-), the whole thing embellished by dialogues and the beautiful bond girl.
Although the character James Bond is not yet defined, and this is not to be considered the best of the saga, it still remains a classic.

I also find it amusing seeing the then cutting edge technology portrayed - given this film dates from the 1960s, it all looks very out of date but then that adds a certain charm to it I suppose.
