I really liked this film for its original characters and quirky and fun story telling and dialogue. Overall I didn't love everything about it, but it's still a real good film. B+

It follows the story of Inner city kids and the struggles of trying to make something of yourself when your sounded by negativity and elements that will hold you back. Malcolm the main character wants to go to Harvard and is extremely set on achieving his goals. Malcolm is also a huge nerd when it comes to 90s Hip-hop culture and that leads to him being a target for getting bullied and the attention of gang members. Maclom does all the average stuff a high-school kid does, Try's to get girls, Gets in trouble etc. The last part of the movie has some surprising elements and story, it's better to experience that part yourself then me tell you it. If your a fan of Hip-Hop culture or anything related to it I'm sure you will enjoy "DOPE". Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Life changes for Malcolm, a geek from a tough neighborhood, after a chance invitation to an underground party leads him and his friends into a Los Angeles adventure.

Written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, 'Dope' is the much hyped hit from this year's Sundance Film Festival which boasts producers like Forest Whitaker, Pharrell Williams and Sean Combs. A coming of age, teen comedy where 90s nostalgia clashes with modern technology.

Malcolm (Shameik Moore), is a nerdy student in Inglewood, LA who loves 90s hip-hop, sports a flat-top hairdo, plays in a punk band with friends Iggy and Job, but studies hard for his dream to attend college. Unfortunately he gets involved with local drug dealer Dom (A$AP Rocky), his girl Nakia (Zoë Kravitz) and soon winds up with a backpack full of drugs.

For a film that deals in gangs, racism, sex, violence, it never feels overbearing. It plays out more casual and silly even when borrowing from 'Boyz In The Hood' and even the recent 'Straight Outta Compton'. The three friends are the outcasts of their school, although their good looks make that hard to believe. Zany side characters come and go with little screen time but the sense of adventure is always present. The soundtrack plays a big part throughout, from 90s rap hits popping up to original electro punk ditties played by the teen cast.

However the film lets itself down in the second half. Characters like Nakia are forgotten as we spend an extended amount of time seeing our teen heroes selling drugs on the net using bitcoin currency. Malcolm's character arc is a bit muddled, going from a shy nerd to blackmailing drug lords. Little tricks like freeze frames, voiceovers and rewinds are certainly in keeping with the 90s influence but here it feels cheap, all the good that came before is almost undone.

At times exhilarating and fresh, yet patchy in execution, 'Dope' may not be everything i expected but it hits the right beats more often than not.

The music works from the beginning to the end with a flashback focus on the 90's.

You will not like it and will reject any truth in it. Moreover, it will fuel a plethora of ignorant observations that would be better left unobserved. I did not grow up in such a place. But my wife did. Though this, like every movie, cannot include every type of person who grows up in such an area, there have not been many movies about a smart young black kid who lives in a ghetto, and who understands that education is a better ticket out than sports or crime. This should be celebrated not dismissed. Though I'm not a huge John Hughes fan, this film is reminiscent of Hughes' films. I look forward to the director's next outing. The film has many cultural and music references that some people will not understand, and might cause them to dismiss the film. I know I did not get them all. But I got enough that I laughed plenty of times and was pleasantly shocked a few times. People who don't like profanity, intense sexual situations and drug references will not be pleased either. But I, for one, really liked this film. Expand

Writer/ director Rick Famuyiwa attempts to weave together the comedic stylings of ‘Superbad’ and context of ‘Boyz n the Hood’ with the sensibilities of a teenage “outsider” comedy/drama into what is essentially a “triumph of the geeks”Writer/ director Rick Famuyiwa attempts to weave together the comedic stylings of ‘Superbad’ and context of ‘Boyz n the Hood’ with the sensibilities of a teenage “outsider” comedy/drama into what is essentially a “triumph of the geeks” proposition with a distinctly adult tone.

As a reflection of his own cultural preferences, Rick Famuyiwa chooses to make the 3 lead “geeks” uniquely “ghetto Hipsters” with the customary cultural appropriation that comes with it, in ‘Dope’ it features an obsession with 1990’s hip-hop culture which adds to the sense of being outsiders, the result of which is a delightful use of classic 90’s hip-hop within a strong soundtrack the way that ‘Superbad’ used classic soul & funk.

Indeed there’s much shared between ‘Dope’ and a number of coming-of-age outsider comedies like ‘Superbad’, from the risqué irreverent humour to the escalating outrageous situations, so when the novelty of the inner city setting wears-off, ‘Dope’ becomes very much your typical modern comedy which could easily have been named ‘Ghetto Geeks: A True Underdog Story’, albeit a contemporary version that makes good use of modern technology and social media.

Perhaps its biggest shortcoming is that for all the crazy goings on, ‘Dope’ is never really that funny, apart from a couple of scenes, and never gets close to the comedic levels of the films it clearly draws inspiration from. Despite this the unique nature of the setting does provide some rarely seen comedic fodder as well as scope for social satire, in fact the film builds towards an attempt at highlighting issues of systematic social discrimination in the US, with limited success it must be said.

The Bottom Line…
A moderately funny and mildly entertaining morality piece about staying true to oneself, ‘Dope’ is just about an original enough take on the teenage underdog comedy to be worth the watch, for Shameik Moore’s lead performance if nothing else, without leaving a particularly lasting impression.

Let’s see what “Dope” has. A lot of violence, some gratuitous, definitely a lot of cursing, a woman urinating on the street and/or vomiting in the face of a guy, nudity, mostly female of course, a high school teenager masturbating a couple of times and, of course, let’s not forget drugs, a lot of drugs. And that soundtrack? Definitely a generational thing!

Is there a neighborhood in Inglewood, California, known as “The Bottoms”? Do A students, with their eyes on Harvard, have their sneakers stolen in school, physically taken from their feet, with no adults around to stop the thieves? Do they have their bicycles stolen on the way home and is there no place in-between a geek and a dope dealer in Black neighborhoods?

One of the reasons I love the movies is that I can learn about groups of people I may not know otherwise but in “Dope” I didn’t know whether I was watching a comedy about stereotypes, and/or clichés, or this is the way a segment of Americans live. I have never lived in a ghetto, always in a community of various races, sexes, genders, nationalities, religions, geeks, jocks and people who made their living from all the different walks of life but this is one movie I was completely lost.

Shameik Moore, as Malcolm, is a charmer as the Harvard want to be student who gets involved in a backpack full of drugs along with a gun , and, by the way, a Bitcoin, scheme. Tony Revolori, as Jib, who is ‘14% Black’ and Kiersey Clemons, as a butch lesbian, along with Moore are the stars of the movie as the best of friends. Zoe Kravitz is a much wiser than he is love/sex interest for the virgin Malcolm. I felt sorry for Chanel Iman as her role is demeaning to all women while Kimberly Elise, as a single working mother represents the best in women, which is rare in this movie. A$AP Rocky as a local dope dealer, Quincy Brown as Iman’s brother, Roger Guenveur Smith as a Harvard interviewer along with Keith Stanfield, De’Aundre Bonds, Blake Andeson, Rick Fox and Amin Joseph, along with producer/narrator Forest Whitaker add to the film in various roles.

The music, mostly by Pharrell Williams, along with Lee Haugen and Germaine Franco, definitely is not for me! The direction and screenplay by Rick Famuyiwa was lacking and confusing to me and for a ‘comedy’ there was very little reaction from the mainly Black audience.

I left the theatre asking myself, “What did I miss?”

It gets off to something of a slow start, but it's a fun movie. It shifts weirdly in tone, but ultimately I'd call it a comedy, albeit one with a lot of boobs, drugs, shootings, and other mischief.

It feels almost revolutionary to have a teen comedy completely focused on an African American setting and characters, but the movie doesn't overplay that hand. You won't leave with a trite understanding of enduring discrimination and ghettoization in urban America, you'll leave with an appreciation for the humanity and diversity of the characters. And of Shameik Moore's dance moves.

He’s growing up in a tough Los Angeles neighborhood (the Bottoms, in Inglewood), surrounded by gang violence and drug deals. He has a perfectly sculpted flattop and a collection of pristine Nike footwear, at least when the Bloods who persecute him at school don’t steal it. He loves Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Digital Underground and any number of less famous alt-rap acts. (At one point he and his friends buy the 12-inch single of “Rock Dis Funky Joint” by Poor Righteous Teachers – and as white-boy embarrassing as this is, I had that record!)

Except, wait – it’s only the ‘90s in Malcolm’s head, and in the obsessive yearnings of his band of misfits: A teen lesbian named Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) and a guy named Jib (Tony Revolori, from “The Grand Budapest Hotel”), who clearly isn’t black but whose precise ethnic origins are never explained. Is he Latino? Is he Arab? And why, as white hippie-hacker type Will Sherwood (Blake Anderson of “Workaholics”) wonders aloud, is Jib allowed to say the N-word when Will isn’t? Complicated question, am I right? And not one everyone will answer in the same way. (Paging Ms. Dolezal!) Malcolm says he doesn’t care whether Will says that word; Diggy pops him one every time he tries it. It’s not that she doesn’t like him, or thinks he’s a bigot. “It’s just instinct,” she shrugs.

It's a different perspective than yourDope's story is about a nerd named Malcolm having a really crazy time in the hood. He gets mixed up with drugs, worries about getting into Harvard, and ultimately learns more about himself in the end. It's a different perspective than your typical coming of age film. One that uses it's setting and characters' races to add a bit of punch to the narrative. This leads to a final act that gets a little jumbled with getting it's points across.

Luckily everything up to that point makes for a hilarious, wild ride. Outside of all the laughs to be found, what makes it's story so compelling are it's young actors. The standout being Shameik Moore as the lead character Malcolm. He gives a fantastic, geeky performance that grows as the character does.

It's got action, drama, and plenty of laughs. It doesn't really dive into it's morals until right at the end and comes off a little heavy handed as a result, but even then the film can't really be dampened. Things get insane for Malcolm and his friends. It's their likability that keeps you just as invested in their struggles as well as their more hilarious encounters.

I enjoyed the movie quiet a lot actually, despite not expecting much from it.It is a fun and smart movie about these geek teenagers making a name for themselves even though born in the wrong time at the wrong place.
Shameik Moore did an incredible job as Malcolm, the lead of the movie. He showed emotions,he was funny when needed to and he is one of the best things about this entire movie.Kiersey Clemons and Tony Revolori were also very good as Malcoms best friends.
Though the movie is not without its flaws. One being its twisted and controversial messages all involving life changing decisions for these teenagers which is really weird and might be misunderstood to some.
Overall this is a good movie, undeniably and a surprising one because I was not expecting it to be this good and despite some flaws and some pacing issues here and there, this movie is a hit.

Earnest and innocent, 'good' student Malcolm embraces all the cliches of 90s hip-hop culture from the tips of his Jordan kicks to the top of his fade haircut, while he strives to earn himself a ticket out of the bottoms of Inglewood via the ivy halls of Harvard. His lovable misfit posse of three includes hispanic Jib ("14% African American") played by Toni Revolori -- the bellboy in Grand Budapest Hotel, and transvestite Diggy (Kiersy Clemons). A spontaneous invitation to a birthday party that turns into a drug raid, a bungled handoff of planted drugs, and an alumni college interview that turns into a lesson in surveillance and the shadow black hat economy, with a recurring love interest or two for the hero, lead to perilous adventures and ultimately, a celebration of the triumph of the human spirit. All set to a truly dope soundtrack that ranges from retro rap hits to contemporary gems by Pharrell Williams and like the best scores, serves as a Greek chorus to the proceedings. A bit uneven in pace and tone but overall lots of fun to be in the company of this lively young ensemble. Expand

Starring Shameik Moore is a fantastic lead performance, the film has some great acting performances from not just Moore, but also Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, Zoe Kravitz, Blake Anderson, ASAP Rocky, and Keith Stanfield. Very well-written, the plot can be a bit outlandish and is ultimately the main detraction I have for the film. It is simply too neat and tidy to be seen as ringing true. However, the situations our protagonist finds himself in and the overall message and themes presented by the film are incredibly important and certainly resonate quite strongly as you watch this one unfold. The characterization and writing of the characters is why I commend the script and the way it unfolds. The plot is secondary and the real stars are our protagonists, who are wonderfully crafted and certainly ring true. An interesting coming of age film that blends together many different genres (kind of like hip-hop) into one compelling piece of entertainment, Dope is a good film that really demonstrates the talents of its cast and its writer/director Rick Famuyiwa. This film is certainly going to make a star out of its lead Shameik Moore, he showed so much potential in this film and I know we will be seeing him in another big role again. However I enjoyed the first part of this movie more than the end and it could have been a little funnier. I thought the characters were very likeable. The soundtrack is great and it is bound to become a huge hit with people in its audience. Expand

This movie is not my cup of tea and is designed and aimed at a youthful, urban audience which I'm not a part of. I'm sure it appeals to some a great deal, but I found the language confusing and the violence disturbing.

Quite a good movie - was expecting something not as good to be honest - it isn't really just a comedy - it has comedic elements, but at the same time has some dark themes and also the movie talks about what it is like to grow up in a hood andQuite a good movie - was expecting something not as good to be honest - it isn't really just a comedy - it has comedic elements, but at the same time has some dark themes and also the movie talks about what it is like to grow up in a hood and all that. I really enjoyed watching it in the end and I would suggest this movie to others. Expand

A coming of age story about 3 friends living in a tough neighborhood; if this was 60 years ago it would be Hell's Kitchen, but this is now so it's Compton in LA. Okay but too far fetched for my taste.

Whole plot threads go nowhere and more and more crazy stuff keeps happening to the same three kids. It's freaking ridiculous, and can only be enjoyed by teens 14 and under who don't know the difference between this and the real world. Expand
