This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Whatever you think you know about house-invading horror movies, forget it. 'Don't Breathe' is an exceptionally absolutely frightening film, triumphing with great direction and strong performances from the cast. It actually might be the scariest movie I've watched in recent years. I was tugging at my hair or sitting at the edge of my seat at each scene, and just when you thought we were out of the woods, the mother-effin' blind dude showed up right there behind you. I'd also like to show appreciation for the disturbing concept that turns out to be holding women captive only to make them surrogate mothers for the baby he longs to have after he lost his daughter. This film is truly the best go-to whenever you feel like having a bunch of back-to-back scares/meltdowns and a case of acute stress. And just like the title suggests, it is sure to make you hold your breath! Expand

Now rarely today will I find a horror film that I will extremely like or even like at all. It's almost now a 1/3 ratio were I'll actually go into a horror movie and find it to be a decent film. Don't Breathe not only expands a new level of intensity in horror or thriller films, but if it makes enough money it could inspire new waves of actually really good horror movies. Don't Breathe blew me away I was so immersed into this film that I almost felt like I was in the horrible situation that the characters in the film were in. There was so many times were I was on the edge of my seat and even sometimes holding in my own breath when the actors were holding their breaths. The premise of this film isn't very new it's kind of borrowed off of films like Panic Room but I think with horror films like The Conjuring, it's okay to borrow off cliché premises if the film itself is done right. The two main characters played by Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette have great character development. When a horror movie gives characters good development and likability it just makes the film way better. Cause now that I have these two characters that I actually care about it'll make me care about what will possibly happen too them throughout the runtime of the film. Now Stephen Lang's character I thought was very menacing as this Blind man. He had a great back story and he was a threat to be reckoned with. Also the way the camera focuses or moves around from scene to scene or place to place is done so well that it brings the intensity level to a more even pace. There's even a lot of long shots in this film that kept me on the edge of my seat. Now I do have one complaint with this film and that is about, no spoilers of course, the ending. The ending I think went on for too long it could've cut off at least 15 minutes earlier and the film would've been better. The film just kept dragging on and it felt unnecessary. Also just a heads up if you haven't yet seen the trailer for this film, I recommend not seeing it cause it actually spoils part of the movie. Other than that I had such an amazing time with Don't Breathe and if your a fan of the horror genre, definitely go into it and if you are interested in having a exciting experience at the movies go and see this film. This is easily one of my favorite films this year and I'm going to give Don't Breathe a grade of an A and a Metascore score of a 9/10. Expand

It was thrilling and dark with surprising reveals and edge of the seat experience with brilliant situation reversals, The story was simple and runtime of below 90min makes the movie even more tight and great, The performances were brilliant and the camera movements was brilliant too, The starting scene and ending connected was a nice touch, The starting intro to characters and specially rocky and her motives were clear and the blind mans story with the daughter and the setup of his house in ghost town with creepy dog and the 3 without a chemistry then the robbery at start with simple in and out makes awesome with slow and silent moments then the killing and advantage of robbers as the blind guy is blind, The escaping tension with the vetern as a killer it was just awesomely dark and entertaining, The lady in basement reveal was surprising and the kill and the escape made it more impactfull then the escape without electricity that moment was gripping as hell, The dog involelment at the esacape and the glass sequence it was just intense and then the fight and deadbody shot was brilliant and the girl for a girl stuff it was creepy as hell then the "injection and i'm not a rapist" makes the old mans condition complex as hell, Then the escape and just about to quit the alex's death and further the dog chase and fight with at last police entrance and rocky escape and then the twist confession to police at the end It was just brilliant ending, Overall it was dark, thrilling and intensely entertaining 90min, it's a great movie!

Horror movies these days are a hit and a miss. Don't Breathe is definitely one of the hits. It's a movie where it teaches you not to **** with blind people, cause you may never know what they can do.

So the story for Don't Breathe is three robbers are planning to steal from a blind man. When they sneak inside at night, they discover that the blind man is not helpless as he seems. The plot is very brilliant. A blind man going around and trying to kill the robbers by listening very carefully to their moves is something that has never been done before.

The cast does a really good job portraying their characters but the one that stole the show was Stephen Lang's portrayal of the blind man. He was right for the role and had some pretty bad ass moments. (i won't spoil it).

The directing and writing were well paced. It wasn't very rushy and they took their time to make sure the story makes sense. I thought that the film was a little bit too short and it could of been a little bit longer. I also thought that at times, it can get a little predictable.

Overall, Don't Breathe is one of the best modern horror movies ever made and i definitely would recommend it to horror movie fans.

This isn't just your average horror movie, though. No, no. In fact, in many ways it falls short of the simple identifiers that help sell modern horror pictures in general. Supernatural elements? Nope. Found footage element? Not even. Jump scares galore? Think again. This is an inventive, accessible, painful, stick-to-your-ribs horror film that hearkens back to - yes, I know, but bear with me here - other twisted, psychologically-fuelled horror classics like "Psycho" and "The Silence Of The Lambs," and it is without a doubt one of the most entertaining times I've had at the theater in recent memory. This is a film that has not only seen every horror movie known to man, but is well aware of the fact that you have too. "Don't Breathe" takes a look at all the expectations, cliches, and tropes that we've gleaned from these horror films, spits on them, cusses at them, and flips the table on them. There is nearly nothing predictable about "Don't Breathe." And THAT is where the true horror comes in.
There's a certain point within the film (I'd say right around the twenty-minute mark) where you as a viewer are forced to take a step back and realize that you have absolutely no idea where this story is headed and that you are utterly powerless in the journey that is about to ensue. And that helplessness, that lack of certainty in what's about to happen; THAT's what makes this movie scary. Sure, the lead performance from Stephen Lang is truly menacing and a career best. Indeed, the set design and makeup effects evoke nausea and other forms of discomfort. Of course the darkness of the story at hand (both real and metaphorical) is spooky to think about. But I say again - knowing that director Fede Alvarez is deliberately misdirecting you at every turn? THAT's horrifying. I surrendered to "Don't Breathe" and, as a result, I was able to enjoy what has quite easily become my favorite modern horror film to date.
In contrast to this film's title, I'd advise you guys to - y'know - always breathe. But what you should definitely NOT DO is miss this film. It is well worth your time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't Breathe was more of an intense thriller than a scary horror movie. Today, horror movies are weak with their jump scares and dumbass characters. This feature really impressed me with its well executed script to a somewhat adequate plot. The scenes made this movie more heart racing. Fede Alvarez was as genuine as he directed Evil Dead. Stephen Lang was as great as his role of Colonel Quaritch in Avatar. Jane Levy was as amazing as she was in the Evil Dead remake, since this is her second collaboration with Alvarez. Dylan Minnette was as exceptional as he was in Prisoners. This movie has a lot of disturbing moments, surprise attacks (like when we discover the Blind Man is a psychopath), and **** up twists-and-turns that leave you breathless. I enjoyed the scene where the Blind Man shuts off the lights in the garage leaving Levy and Minnette blind. What's impressive about this scene is that we see what the actors look like when they're in a room that is pitch black. The twist about the Blind Man was so **** up that I don't want to share it in this review. Overall, I enjoyed this movie. Don't Breathe is a suspenseful game of survival in the dark where one breath taken can cost the players their lives. Expand

The Best Original Movie Of The Year

The most difficult was not enter the movie theater, the most difficult is to get out alive from it. From the second one to eighty-eight minute: this is the amount of time you will be suffocated - literally, holding the breath - within the asphyxiate and perturbing home invasion of one of the greatest of modern horror, Fede Alvarez. He is proudly latino, Alvarez managed a swift leap to the prodigious Hollywood by means of a sci-fi short uploaded on Youtube in 2009 called "Panic Attack!", basic but supreme posed an invasion of robots in Montevideo, Uruguay. A few weeks later, Ghost House Pictures proposed him to direct the coveted remake of "Evil Dead", colossal work considered as the official feature film debut of the talented director within the American film. After the high expectations that he reaped after the almost perfect cinematic experience in 2013, the Uruguayan gets into the field of the thriller genre for obfuscate us with a suggestion as simple as complex, a cult film and a clear sign that the brilliant and original minds still exist.

From dark first shot in style of 'flashforward', with a slow descent in high-angle towards the focus of attention, "Don't Breathe" promises a well-measured ferocious adventure intelligent enough to delight both fans of the genre and adrenaline junkies with psychological and physical horror that will leave you submerged in a catatonic state approximately for the rest of your life. Without the need of an intricate dialogue and subplots which do not give novel anything to the story, the introduction of the main leads happens in the blink an eye, a couple of scenes that will have significant weight along the footage and we are already in, no exit. A young trio with different personal motivations perpetrate private properties of the wealthy during the summer months, despite these do not lead to much significance since they do so without committing a truly grave criminal-offense. With the condition that this will be their last burglary, because of the economic magnitudes that this entails, the burglars break into the desolate dwelling of a military veteran in Detroit - known only as the Blind Man -, a city that has been affected by social and economic turmoils, the perfect ghost town to run a robbery. After they are inside the house, a storm of unexpected events occur uncontrollably, proving that in the land of dark, the blind man is king.

With a script conceived by Fede Alvarez and his recurring collaborator Rodo Sayagues, the film deliberately slips away between personal boundaries of each character to gradually reveal who are the real preys. The narrative standards of this duo do not have moderation, nor imaginative standstills because they leverage each minor opportunity for disturb with professionalism and natural exertion. The curiosity by seeing the final result of a premise so simple and nothing muddled perverted my mind, and indeed, this is a genuine work of the suspense and horror. As a fan of the genre, it is a categorical conviction to see the unforeseen resurgence of original ideas to temporarily revitalize the harassed and wasted world of horror, though, there is no doubt that both the simplicity and efficacy of "Don't Breathe" will cynically be emulated in future films.

The continuous use of space is vital energy to join us with the setting of the story. Just as its argumentative aspect, the film insinuates us the idea of having a limited geography about the house, nonetheless, Alvarez and his team find ways to make the viewers aware of the claustrophobic impasses inside the abode. From the beginning, the camera movement makes specific focuses to key places or elements for the plot - as we will see later -, in order to situate ourselves in the sinister and colorless environment of the basement, lounge, closet or air ducts.

For the stifling and oppressive atmosphere were indispensable two fundaments with excellent finishes. Roque Baños is the Spanish author responsible for the tense soundtrack that accompanies the second primordial characteristic, photography. Pedro Luque - also Uruguayan - prettifies masterfully the spaces of the setting with components well measured such as lighting, brightness enhancement, suffocating camera angles and limited special effects. As you will surely remember, the chase scene in the pale dark, something in neo-noir style, without a doubt, one of the most awesome of the year since in the land of the dark, the blind man reigns and now each human being with its five senses will be more prone than the trained blind man.

"Don't Breathe" takes control of each visual and narrative help at its disposal, it does not worry about to please critical spectators because it unintentionally does. The best original film of the year runs an intriguing narrative, a great-looking survival structure, tremendous innovations for the horror genre that will keep you glued to the screen and the constant improvement of a new combination of film genres ("Green Room" & "10 Cloverfield Lane"). Relentless, unique, simple and concise, terrifying, impressive, allegorical, gloomy, intimidating, suffocating. Fede Alvarez owed us a perfect cinematic experience after "Evil Dead", "Don't Breathe" is it, pure film.

You don't need jump scares or monsters when you have such a simple yet unsettling horror concept. The movies also include a few unpredictable and disturbing twists giving more depth and some thought-provoking themes even.

The characters had interesting personalities and believable motivations overall except for Money. The narrative was pretty good but the movie still suffers from a few anticlimactic or cliche scenes as well. Another small complaint I have is that the beginning of the movie wasn't that great but I suppose it was necessary to give some humanity and a different perspective into the trio of thief protagonists.

My overall opinion is that Don't Breathe is a remarkable horror movie that sticks to a very simple concept yet executes it almost perfectly except for a few missteps I've mentioned previously in this review.

Definitely enjoyed the ride. A simple "Break in and Run" gone seriously wrong, add to that a few good scares here and there, a mysterious neighbor, and a pinch of wtf twists, and you've got yourself one hell of a thriller. Good movie

Certainly Director Alvarez is slick – he has studied the tricks and knows how to move the plot along and shoot scenes to hold your interest. But this is not a stylish or very smart film – not Halloween or Psycho or Alien or Silence of the Lambs – so I give it a middling grade. I wouldn’t even call it “fun” and I am a horror film fan. Maybe he can learn to add a little less gore and a little more humanity in the future. Expand

Don’t BreatheIn a year with a string of impressive horror films, Don’t Breathe is yet another good entry. Directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, 2013), this film shows that he has a talent for horror, and may be a rising presence in the genre. Don’t Breathe is hold-your-breath scary, and features a clever premise, despite a few small plot holes. It is worth mentioning that the title and posters seemed a little ambiguous as to the plot, but watching the film the title seems appropriate.
The first thing to mention about this film is that it is full of twists and turns, but does take a relatively practical approach to it’s plot. The film’s story is very smartly constructed, as it is full of tension from the opening moments, right up to the end. The film’s biggest strength is its simplicity, as it makes the most of a very straightforward premise. That being said, the film is constructed in a way that obstacles are consistently thrown at the main characters in creative ways.
Simply put the fact that the writers and directors were able to tell a story with such a clever yet simple premise makes it easy to follow. The impressive thing about this film is within a short period of time, the characters are well established and the premise, which is quite clever, is introduced. With all of the cliched horror films today, putting empty characters in cliched situations, it’s refreshing to see relatable characters put into a straightforward premise. However, as happens in all horror films, the characters find everything is not as they expected it, and quickly discover they’re in over their heads.
The only problem with the film, is that it does cater to a few too many horror cliches and has a few glaring plot holes. While the obstacles in this film are creatively thrown at the main characters, a few of them don’t make sense, with a little thought. The story at times, neglects to explain how something happened, and relies on a few Deus ex Machinas. The irony is that many of the plot holes, end up helping the villain character, as he seems almost inhuman by the end of the film.
In the end, Don’t Breathe does a brilliant job keeping the audience on the edge of their seats, with a combination of ingenuity and simplicity. The film offers a refreshing entry in the horror genre, which has seen a nice revival this year, from the typically cliched horror films we get. The film isn’t great, as it has a few too many plot holes, and cliches, but is still very entertaining. Horror buffs looking for a good film to get them into the Fall/Halloween season will likely enjoy this film.

Fede Alvarez, director of the 2013 "Evil Dead" remake, put all my fears to rest.

Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette), and Money (Daniel Zovatto) are Detroit teenagers who spend their days pulling off heists at houses protected by the security company Alex's dad works for; for Rocky, she is trying to make enough money to run away to California with her younger sister to escape their neglectful and abusive mother. One robbery doesn't net nearly as much profit as they had hoped, so Money devises a new scheme: rob the home of a blind Iraq War veteran (Stephen Lang) who received a quarter-million dollar settlement from a rich family after one of its members accidentally killed his only daughter. One problem with this, though...The old guy is severely underestimated and is not nearly as defenseless as he seems, and soon the thieves find themselves locked in a life-threatening struggle to escape the house before they end up victims of their stupid decision.

Aside from the target of this little robbery, the character development in the story isn't much to speak of. Alex and Money are given no traits that set them apart from typical horror movie guys: the former is the concerned, brains-of-the-operation friend trying to be more than a friend, and the latter is the tough-guy BF who thinks life's problems can be solved with a Beretta 9mm (oh, the irony). The same could be said for Rocky, although we're given more of an explanation as to her reasons for committing these crimes than we are for the others (Money we can automatically assume greed, but why Alex is involved is beyond me) and thus sympathize with her a bit more. Despite this, one thing I like about both our heroes(?) is--and stick with me here, people, this is gonna be a shocker--is that for the most part, THEY MAKE RATIONAL DECISIONS. God, how long has it been since a horror movie has done that? Too long, that's the answer. Lang, who came to international attention for playing the douchey Army guy in "Avatar", gets what is undoubtedly the most interesting character in the movie, and his moral ambiguity will make you wanna both hate him and root for him at the same time. Indeed, his seems like the more sympathetic character throughout most of the film, until a dark secret is revealed and he dips into more villainous territory.

The cinematography, which so often in modern horror movies relies on shaky, choppily edited filming to produce scares, is beautifully clean, which a film like this almost demands. Without a clear view of the predicament each character is facing, it's hard to follow the action and know exactly what has happened, but once again Alvarez proves himself above the level of the usual modern-day horror writer/director and carefully constructs the house so that everything has its place, as if he were drafting its architectural design rather than setting a home invasion thriller inside of it. The sequence among the shelves in the basement is easily one of my favorites within modern horror films, as the facial expressions of the actors perfectly capture the essence of being trapped in the dark with a man who is neither frightened nor affected by it.

The performances of the cast are phenomenal, particularly Minnette, Lang, and Levy (the latter previously worked with Alvarez in his "Evil Dead" remake); as the would-be robbers try to evade the deadly octogenarian and learn the dark truth behind the things that happen in his house, the fight to escape and survive becomes all the more desperate and all the more engrossing. Minnette, with what little he has to work with in terms of character, manages to make Alex likable to the point that we hope he also survives, and what more could a horror movie character ask for? Lang at once makes his character sadly sympathetic and utterly disturbing and terrifying, and his attitude towards the world, the robbers, and anything/anyone else that crosses his path can be summed up in one line of his: "There is nothing to hold a man back once he realizes there is no God." The Blind Man plays a variety of roles in different places within the film: a grief-stricken wretch, a stoic vigilante defending his home from intruders, a morally indifferent sociopath, and a nihilistic philosopher, depending on what's required of him.

All in all, a lean and mean home invasion movie that will be sure to both entertain and petrify in equal measure. "Scary" isn't the correct descriptor for this film; "tense" is more like it, and there's not a moment once the real action begins that you won't be on the edge of your seat, hanging on to every scene as if it might be your favorite character's last. A great cast, beautiful cinematography and one of the best twists in modern horror make for a ride you won't forget soon. 8/10

The thing is, I was rooting for the blind guy to kill them and fyeah. But as soon as we saw the person being held up in the basement.. boy I was not on his side, Fun watch, good acting, maybe hoping for a part 2. BUT if there is a part 2 and its the guy chasing after the girl.. the guy didn't get her name or aadress or anything, just her voice and the smell of her shoes. And the police think there were two people robbing the place.

Haven't watched many horror movies and I'm not an expert, but sure I can say, that Don't Breathe is in the top. It did it's job perfectly. It was scary and with so many plot twists, which maintain interest all the way.

The characters were unlikeable - some teens, with no real reason to do, what they are doing, and worship more money, than their own life and remaining alive. So unlikeable to such an extent, that you want them all dead in the end. It was strange when they decided to help the captive, even though they were looking arrogant and selfish. The old man though did a great job and because of all of that I think it was some story gabs and the characters, that stumble the movie. The story was not the best, but with those non stop plot twists it's compensates. Maybe it could be even more scary and brutal and that would not be a bad thing (for example the birth thing might not be there instead of this to be shown how the captive ate disgusting food for punishment or something like that, but that's just details). The end suggests a second part, but if there is none, it's disappointing.

I think for a horror movie you won't regret watching it even if you are non-horror-movies fan.

It's difficult to not roll our eyes whenever we see yet another one come along. But Don't Breathe twists most of its genre tropes around to breathe (pun intended) a relieving amount of fresh air into this crowded group of films.

What's so refreshing about this film is the characters. I'm so used to seeing half-baked stories about a typical family being having to defend themselves against a group of underdeveloped baddies who either want to kill them or steal their stuff. But there's a great deal of depth to the characters in Don't Breathe, where everyone is a protagonist, while at the same time everyone is an antagonist. With the exception of one of the main thieves who is severely underdeveloped and actually quite annoying, every character is fleshed out in such a way that I felt at least some sort of connection to them all. They're complex, intelligent people that are worth becoming invested in, and the emotion-filled performances are mostly what bring such vibrant life to the characters that is rarely seen in horror movies today.

The plot is also surprisingly almost as intricate as the characters. It starts out with a paper-thin premise of breaking into a house to get money, but as we delve into the lives and hardships of the thieves and the blind man, the story becomes a rich exploration of morality and justice that almost makes up for the movies many flaws.

Getting to those flaws, the main plot points get more and more predictable as the story goes on, which leads to a very disappointing finale that was as cliché and expected as could be. In addition to that, the scares are quite a mixed bag. It's engaging and smart, to be sure, and there are some moments of very legitimate, well-thought-out suspense, but a great deal of the horror aspects do rely upon cheap jump scares and as a result the suspense that is built up is quickly dashed to pieces.

Don't Breathe is not as good as it could be. It's bogged down by some inescapable clichés and a clunky final act, but it's a film that revitalizes a dying genre with intelligent writing, more than competent direction style, and mostly solid performances.

Luckily, it’s more than that. Eschewing the uniquitous teeny-centric scare-fests we are so often bridled with, director Alvarez has sidestepped convention to give us a brutal genre picture full of “What in the world?!” surprises and jaw-dropping twists. Thanks to the strength in its accomplished direction and focused scope, Don’t Breathe is a pull-no-punches, edge-of-your-seat nightmare.
It’s a reverse of the home-invasion story, like a slightly less compelling (although more purely plotted) version of 10 Cloverfield Lane: a group of burglars is terrorized by the homeowner, blind war veteran who is more than meets the eye. Alvrez’s direction is unexpectedly strong, as the clever camera work and immense details pull us right in. In particular, the way a blind person may setup up their home is perfectly realized (empty rooms, backwards-facing TVs). On top of that, the fight scenes are well-staged and the sound editing mixed with the score beautifully manipulates the tension.
The characters, unfortunately, are not as successful. The cool meta-element that speaks of film-going voyeurism gets a bit lost when the characters aren’t quite engaging enough. A movie-personification of the axiom “hurt people hurt people”, and Lang as the blind, pseudo-villain is the only real high-point as an effectively imposing and volatile presence. Otherwise, the motivations range from clichéd to weak, desperately needing more layers and better dialogue (again, see 10 Cloverfield Lane). Luckily, when you’re deep inside this joylessly demented thriller, it’s roller-coaster scares are the perfect post-summer escape at the theaters.

Deutsche Review – Kritik

It was unique enough at times for me to come out of it without feeling ripped off... but it definitely had some flaws.

Pros:
Great direction and cinematography. A few scenes literally had me holding my breath.
Some plot twists are genuine surprises and at times it is very suspenseful.
It's a large-release horror movie that is rated R. It's a dying breed.

Cons:
The blatant attempt to portray atheists as nihilistic scum is ridiculous. I won't spoil anything, but this is the weakest attempt to paint atheists as terrible people in cinematic history. It's laughable and completely out of place in the context of the movie. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that this movie was partially funded by extremist Christians. It's that bad. Thankfully, it was just one scene... but it could have been easily cut and it would not have affected the plot.
Many of the plot "twists" are predictable due to obvious foreshadowing. Zooming in on items that don't currently matter is just telling the audience you think they're stupid. It's 2016... we don't need adult (rated R) horror movies holding our hands. They could have very easily omitted a few angles/scenes and the audience would have felt less patronized.

A unique concept that's excellently capitalized on. While you aren't able to get emotionally invested with the characters, the inventive scenarios make for a tense viewing experience. The result is one satisfying thriller.

Things get way more deranged than you would expect. In their attempts to make some easy cash these robbers not only get more than they bargained for with a surprisingly lethal old, blind man, but they also learn he's got some twisted secrets well. It's also a very violent movie, but that was to be expected.

Fede Alvarez delivers a very satisfying follow up to his Evil Dead remake. They are both wildly different movies, but how the same level of talent and inventiveness. While the movie stumbles a bit with it's characters and plot, it more than succeeds well enough in tension and action to make for a very satisfying horror-thriller.

"Don't Breathe" was actually one of the most surprising movies for me this year. When I originally saw the previews, I thought this looked like a gimmicky movie that wouldn't amount to much. And while I was sort of right with the gimmicky"Don't Breathe" was actually one of the most surprising movies for me this year. When I originally saw the previews, I thought this looked like a gimmicky movie that wouldn't amount to much. And while I was sort of right with the gimmicky part, the movie overall is a tense experience that many people will enjoy. However, the movie fails in certain aspects that I just can't get over.

The story is rather simple: three friends go around robbing houses to get money. Our main character, Rocky, and her boyfriend, Money, are trying to get money to leave Detroit and move to California. Their friend Alex helps them by getting the keys to the houses since his dad works for a real estate company. One day, Money gets a tip that an old blind man has a large settlement in his home, so they decide to rob him thinking it will be an easy score. This of course starts our movie experience as the old blind man is more capable than we think he is. Before I get into my complains, let me tell you what this movie gets right.

By far the best part of this movie is the atmosphere. At first I thought the setting of just the house would get boring, but it actually added to the feeling of claustrophobia in the film. Each scene with the blind man and the main characters is tense and heart pounding, especially later in the film. There's some great sequences where the blind man will be chasing or hunting down the robbers that makes your heart pound.

The writing too is very solid and believable, at least for the main characters. Some characters like Rocky's mom and her boyfriend Money have lines that feel somewhat cliché and forced. However, the main trio of characters (that being Alex, Rocky, and the blind man) have great dialogue and interactions with each other that feels believable.

Cinematography is also solid overall. While the film doesn't take many risks with it's cinematography, it still helps add to that overall tense and scary feel that the movie is going for.

Where the movie start to fall apart for me is the overall story and twists. I won't spoil them here, but the movie does awful with the suspension of disbelief. Theres moments where you'll say "oh they're dead" only for the character to get up and start running as if nothing happened at all.

But by far the biggest complaint I have with the film was the way in which they try to make you dislike the old blind man. See, when thinking about the concept as face value (that being three people robbing a blind man), you wouldn't really feel much sorrow for the three robbers as what they're doing is an awful thing. However, the film does several things to make you afraid and dislike the blind man. Now I won't spoil it here, but I will say that these twists felt forced. You could tell that the writer knew that they had to make the blind man unlikeable, so they threw these twists in there to make him so.

In summary, "Don't Breathe" is not a bad movie. Not at all. But the movie has fundamental problems with it's story and plot that I just couldn't really see myself watching it again. While it does have good acting, solid dialogue and good cinematography, the ridiculous suspension of disbelief and messy twists hold this movie back from being the next great horror film.

The boyfriend wants to take the women and her sister to Another country but they don't have the money. The Boyfriend finds out theres a blind man who lives by himself ever since his daughter was killed by a women that was speeding but got away with the crime.
The rest of the movie is them breaking into the mans house and being haunted for what they are doing in his home and i jumped from my seat at least 3 times in the Cinema.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Am I living in an alternate universe, where everyone has been gifted with sub-moron level IQs? And therefore, films like Don't Breathe are universally praised. Don't Breathe is a massive pile of dung, with awful characters, poor plot and not even a single character to root for. The main woman, who we are supposed to get behind, is an awful thief and Stephan Lang is simply defending his home. It's nonsensical, non-scary and has one okay-ish scene (the turkey baster). Movies these days are awful and Don't Breathe is no exception. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know I'm gonna be in the minority on this one and I honestly couldn't care less! This film just didn't work for me at all! It wasn't scary at all, nor was it as near as suspenseful as it was hyped up to be, and the characters made really dumb decisions throughout the entire film. And to make matters worse, the entire second half became so scattershot and ridiculous that I was pretty much ready for it to end by the time there was well over a half-hour to go. Overall, I found this to be not only not scary at all, but also completely absurd due to the incompetent characters and ridiculous turn the plot takes in the second half. Once it was revealed that the blind man simply wanted a child after his daughter's death and was willing to rape kidnapped women for one, the film simply lost all credibility with me (I really could've done without that POV shot of him filling the inside of a turkey baster with his own semen, just sayin'!) An absurd third act cheapens an otherwise artful, clever film. It really didn't need to go there. But in the early robbery scenes, the film's use of silence is genuinely nerve-wracking.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't like this movie one bit. It's about bad people who bruitize people's house and steal. They pick one wrong one to hit and I can't find my self feeling a bit sorry for the jam they got their selves into. Blind people develop senses to make up for not seeing.but this dude didn't seem to have any of them. He couldn't see you 1 foot in front of his face or couldn't smell them. Makes you wonder how he got that house so together in the first place. Then there was the dude jerking off at the first house and throwing his load all over the floor was just very tacky and completely unnessessary to be in the film at all. Film was totally unbelieveable and you can tell how bad a movie has missed the mark by how many times I'm shaking my head (and I did it a lot). Can't figure out the big craze of this movie. The chick ends up getting away with all the cash, so typical Hollywood. To be honest I thought the movie was total crap. Expand

It concerns three young burglars who find themselves terrorised by the blind man they are attempting to rob in a desolate Detroit neighbourhood. The film offers up the usual jumpy moments and tension is maintained, but it lacks the real primal force of a ‘Wolf Creek’ or ‘You’re Next’. One sequence where all the lights go off is effectively shot and there is one genuine surprise to be had at around the half way mark. Overall, though, it achieves what it sets out to do. It will be interesting to see if the somewhat open ending unfurls into the hinted at sequel. Expand
