The contrast therein is simply too lopsided to be forgiven. Further, there's not much in "Dog" that you'll find yourself surprised by. All the road trip tropes are accounted for and with the addition of the titular element — and her deceased, servicemember owner, to boot — the emotional manipulation is not exactly being applied in an oblique manner here. Imagine, if you will, a blend between "Rain Man" and "Turner & Hooch." That's basically what this is. Still, those last 20 minutes or so are just so damn effective. Yes, yes, they play on tried and true human tendencies, but I'll be damned if I don't feel revived by the idea of a happy dog. It's nothing to write home about as a film, sure, but the pathos within is undeniable when utilized. Expand

Made to entertain for a moment, but I'm also pretty sure I'll have forgotten all about it by the end of the week.

As with any buddy flick, things start out "ruff," but they eventually settle into the expected warm friendship. Of course, they meet people along the way, but this is pretty much Tatum's show. His charm works, but he's battling a mediocre script. To further complicate things, this is Tatum's first directorial effort, along with another first-timer Reid Carolyn. They do an adequate job of telling the story, but there's virtually no warmth, so the emotion never materializes. They couldn't even generate tears during the grave site scene and to compound matters, the dog isn't especially endearing. Expand

Totally in agreement with the average score. Entertaining enough to keep your attention but weak on many levels. Honestly without the dog's performance it would be hard to give praise to the film.

The movie isn't bad, but is definitely more serious than the trailers would show. Channing Tatum also directs the movie well.

Although the comedy was not up to par, it did feel emotional in some degree and the characters were well designed. However, I would say ~35% of the movie was filler that contributed nothing and just felt like an empty excuse to make the movie longer. Some plot points also just felt unnecessary and contribute nothing to the actual purpose of the movie, to be a tearjerker with good comedy. Expand

The film follows Army Ranger Briggs (Tatum) who is assigned to drive Lulu, a Belgian Malinois military dog, from Washington state to her handler's funeral in Arizona. The story focuses on the bond and unlikely friendship that develops between the gruff soldier and the dog during their road trip adventure.

Dog has the potential to be a heartwarming and feel-good story about the special connection between humans and their animal companions. Tatum and Carolin's previous film collaborations have been comedic in nature, so Dog seems to mark a shift toward more emotional, dramatic subject matter for the duo.

The premise of an unconventional friendship between a soldier and a military dog has the potential to be deeply moving if handled well. The trailers give a good sense of the film's comedic charm and emotional resonance, helped along by what appears to be a talented dog actor portraying Lulu.

While Dog may not break new ground cinematically, early signs suggest it could deliver a satisfying and emotionally effective story about the profound bonds between humans and animals, helped by Channing Tatum's likeable performance and chemistry with the canine co-star.

Takes a while for the story to get off the ground, and sometimes suffers from overall structure and scene execution. If you are looking for a simple comedy/drama, with an amazing dog (Lulu), this is what you'll get. There is a deeper element of the film of overcoming the anguish of post traumatic stress from war from both human and animal alike, which is an powerful theme. Acting and dialogue leave something to be desired and are subpar but we are rewarded with a few very touching scenes (especially at the end) and great themes and soundtrack.
