Visually awesome and Cumberbatch is very good. Another nice film from Marvel, who are leaving DC for dead.

Otherwise acting is good, special effects are great and overall I would rate the movie somewhere in the middle of the Marvel pack. I think once Dr Strange appears in the other marvel movies will we see Cumberbach's true kickassness in the character. Expand

A very predictable movie, most especially the first half. The 2nd half and towards the ending salvaged it a bit. Could be better, but it wasn't bad. .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. How do we solve a problem like Doctor Strange?

Here’s the deal, Dr. Strange manages to break away from some of the usual Marvel movie clichés and brings us on a yoga-studio-70s-acid trip adventure in mysticism and martial arts. However, there are some incredible drawbacks that cause the movie to suffer.

The main drawback is again we have a villain that has no character development. The first film in a new series always seems to always have a throw away villain. In this case it was Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius. This guy isn’t even that prominent in the comics and in the film becomes another World dominated villain-of-the-week, not to mention he is always followed by his troop of beautiful and silent back-up-dancer thugs whose main job is to die one by one.

The good of this film however is how it beautifully integrates into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, again building to Infinity Wars with another Infinity Stone (time stone) being found. Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel McAdam’s chemistry is quite strong and Tilda Swinton really does justice to the character of The Ancient One.

There is a lot of story and a lot of ideas and sometimes they feel quite rushed without much time to have everything properly resolved. I still like this film and want it to do well. I hope that the sequel will be even more grandiose.

It's visuals are in it's own league in the Marvel series. It loves to use the kaleidoscope/mirroring effect found in the original comic books, It's great they stay true to the comics and have it pay off so well. The story is interesting, It does a good job at explaining who strange is before he became who is his. The story is able to carry you through the movie without slowing down. The Action and visual effects is where this movie shines. Seeing the magical spells being cast and used in battle is an interesting change compared to Avengers and Civil War. It adds a different level and style to this film that not may other Marvel Films have.Doctor Strange is less heavy on the comic relief then usual but that is a nice change if you ask me.
Doctor Strange is all around great and enjoyable film and I highly suggest you see it in theaters.

Either way I was entertained and it isA good introduction movie for the titular hero with great actors and impressive visuals. However it is also a movie where I am not sure if it is actually that good and I was tricked into believing this. Either way I was entertained and it is a good popcorn movie. The movie is the story of the surgeon Dr. Steven Strange whose skill are close to supernatural levels and gave him fame and wealth. However he is also quite arrogant and not the nicest person while being no total **** Think a bit of a nicer version of Dr. House or other say Tony Stark as surgeon (but less playboy). His life and fate changes when he had a car accident where his hands are badly injured and cant use them anymore on the level he needed as surgeon. This shatters him and he is searching for a way out of this situation. I stop here to avoid spoilers. It is a heroes journey of self discovery and character growth. Well done and enjoyable. Might not be the most original story but with the strong cast it becomes remarkable enough for me. For the cast we have Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange. He is one of my favourite actors and he always delivers. He is fully believable and for me the definitive choice for the character. Benedict Wong as Wong is one of my favourite side characters and hidden gem. I always want more of him. Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo delivers a truly good performance and I say he is maybe the most complex character in the movie. Tilda Swinton is a great actress and fully delivers. However the people that claim whitewashing are not wrong as the character she played was original an Asian man. As per Marvel standards back then the antagonist are a bit underdeveloped but work. In total a really good cast that improved the experience. The visuals and special effects are breathtaking. Rarely ever was I impressed like that. I am not the person who writes much about this and the last time I rememberer was about the original Jurassic Park. Here in this movie the effects add a lot and make it remarkable. Overall this was an enjoyable movie and great experience. Not the best Marvel movie but at least an 8/10. Take it with a grain of salt as I said I am not sure if it is actually that good and I was tricked into believing this. Bonus: I recommend the “What If “ episode “What if Dr. Strange lost his Heart instead of his hands?” for a remarkable story about love, grief and loss. Even if you dislike the show it is an episode that is worth watching. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "After a tragic car accident" says the synopsis, but it couldn't be more wrong. The car accident is not tragic in the sense of evoking sympathy, and it's hardly even an accident. The title character ends up mutilating himself and losing proper function of his hands by driving like a cocky idiot speeding around in his Ferrari (or whatever it is) and passing cars on a snaking cliff roadway in a no-passing zone. He gets what he deserves for playing with a car like it's a toy instead of a hazardous piece of machinery, and we never even hear if the people he crashed into were injured or died, the film is so focused on trying to make us feel sympathy for its egotistical, entitled, cocky watered-down rehash of Tony Stark. Everything about the story in this film is ridiculous, nonsensical, or outright cheesy (there's a fight scene that would not be out of place in Ghostbusters). The redeeming qualities of this film are that the visual effects and fight scenes are incredible eye-candy, some of the best I've seen in film. This movie is a safe and legal alternative to huffing air cans and staring at a screensaver, but that's about the best it does. The characters are cliche and uninteresting. Dr. Strange is actually rather unlikable, even more so than Tony Stark, with little redeeming qualities. The film doesn't really convince us that he was able to master these abilities so easily and so quickly. It seems to happen overnight giving off a really strong Mary Sue vibe for the Doc. If you've seen the anime X and the movie Inception though prepare yourself for a film that basically heavily borrows from both (whether intended or not). Oh yeah, there's also several extended and close-up shots of surgery and people getting stitches, which is anxiety-inducing and about as fun to sit through as a live birth. I honestly think a 4 is a little generous for this film since I really hated almost everything about it except the action and the visuals, but again, Marvel outdid themselves with the visual effects so I'll give them credit where it's due.

This isn't visual transformation in a smoky graveyard (a la Harry Potter); this is an Inception-level of visual magic-scapes. And even if the "rich guy loses it and finds redemption" story sounds similar to some others, it is executed so well - and the actors are such a pleasure to watch - that genre redundancies are hard to notice. An excellent soundtrack from Michael Giacchino reinforces the action (though those with sharp ears will hear similarities to Harry Potter and Star Trek). Even if you haven't heard of Doctor Strange before, or read any of his comics (as I hadn't prior to this film), well worth a watch - provided you are prepared to revel in visual magical absurdities. While I understand the comparison that some have made between Strange and RDJ's Tony Stark, I actually didn't feel that they were that similar. I found Strange a compelling character and I think Cumberbatch did a great job as him. (His accent may have been a bit shaky but I didn't mind that much.)

You know, the kind where a rich and egotistical neurosurgeon ends up losing his ability to use his handsWhen I first sat down to watch Doctor Strange in theaters this past weekend, I figured it would be just like every other Marvel movie. You know, the kind where a rich and egotistical neurosurgeon ends up losing his ability to use his hands properly. He then goes on to be humbled and saved by science because that’s all he believes in. Oh wait, yes, that is what happened. Well, not exactly. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to see some aspects of Christianity within this movie. Doctor Strange is a close representation of the cultural differences between secularists and Christians in the world today. Strange is your typical materialist, where he believes that science can solve any question of the universe. If science cannot prove it, it simply is not possible in this world. Yet, during the movie, the viewer witnesses Strange’s slow acceptance of a power greater than science. When he first arrives in Nepal, Strange goes searching for the Ancient One who can heal his hands. The Ancient One, in my opinion, is a media-glorified version of God. She is a living mash-up of religious traditions and ideas that emphasize spiritual warfare. The Ancient One mentors Strange in the matters of spirit, preaching that he needs to reorient his beliefs. The Ancient One argues that only the spirit can better heal a person. Strange needs to let go of everything he thought was true and instead rely on faith. This movie, I believe, is a classic redemption story where Strange recognizes there is a power greater than himself and then becomes the “savior of mankind” against the supernatural evil who seduced humans with the lie of a promise of eternal life. The one criticism I have is of Strange being the savior, because no true human man has the ability or power to save the entire world from sin. However, I applaud Marvel for finally allowing faith to be a source of power rather than science, technology, or alien ability. Expand

Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the titular role with little difficulty, resulting from a cocky doctor on the rise to a man who has lost everything he deems important to him. The big aspect of the film, its visual splendor, is used just in that way, making the 3D a feast for the eyes. The story and humor are on point as usual from one of the biggest brands in the world. Though it's the characters that really sell this film, with the controversial Tilda Swindon's Ancient One stealing the show from Cumberbatch many times. The film only falters in the character usage of a couple of its cast, most notable Rachel Adams playing Cumberbatch'a love interest, and does lose points for the obvious parallels between its story and that of Marvel's Iron Man. The film, however, ranks to be one of Marvel's best pictures, with a interesting and humorous story, wonderful characters, and some of the best visual effects of 2016. Expand

Doctor Strange would have most likely earned a solid 7 from me, if it weren't for the breath-taking visual effects.

Characters: One problem I had with Dr. Strange's character is that we never really get to sympathize for him. He starts out as a jerk (a rather charming jerk that is, since he is portrayed by Cumberbatch) and suddenly becomes a relatively good person within a few scenes. There wasn't even a real scene where Strange has a breakthrough moment and suddenly masters sorcery, he just kind of masters it somewhat off camera. Rachel McAdams' character was underwritten and basically just there for some love interest since they needed one. Otherwise, the characters are as good as most Marvel superheroes are; just good, not amazing or completely original or anything.

Acting: Benny Batch was a great pick for Dr. Strange, but they might as well have just let him keep his British accent. His American accent still needs some tweaking, though it is a major improvement from Black Mass. He over-enunciates a few words like "New yORk", and it took a little time to adjust to his throaty American accent because I've matched his voice and accent with his face for so long. McAdams didn't really do anything, but she was fine for what she did do. Chewy Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton were also very good.

Plot: It's basically a basic Marvel plot. Blah blah, some bad thing happens and now they need to heal and accidentally get a new superpower, whoops now he has to save the world, and yay he saves it in the end against all odds. But once you look past the predictable plot, the movie is enjoyable and fun.

Humor: Lots of the humor fell flat in this movie, but there are a few scenes here and there that can generate a good laugh.

Action: The action is very well done, among some of the best Marvel fight scenes I've ever seen.

Effects: The effects have got to be some of the best I've seen in a while. How they managed to generate mind-bending effects that aren't headache-inducing I have no idea. I understand that it must have taken days if not months to make the animations and everything, but there were really only about two full scenes that used these amazing effects to their fullest. I would've liked more scenes like the two, but I do respect the time it most likely took just to make those two scenes.

Overall, I would recommend Doctor Strange, as it is a fun, enjoyable movie. I was anticipating a bit more action, and left the theater wanting a bit more considering how well-done the fight scenes were. It's a very Marvel movie that doesn't break the basic Marvel formula, but is still enjoyable in the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn’t want to like Doctor Strange, mostly because Benedict Cumberbatch had gotten so popular that I couldn’t stand him. He had reached the point of oversaturation, like some baritone-voiced coffee that had spilled over and completely overwhelmed the one meager napkin you had.

And then I watched it. And goddammit, Cumberbatch was great. I remembered why he had gotten so outrageously popular: the man is charismatic.

I had similar feelings about Marvel movies as a whole. I had loved them initially, buying over-priced tshirts at Hot Topic and arguing with friends over who the best Avenger was. (It’s Ironman, don’t @ me.) And then the movies kept coming. That isn’t to say that I didn’t like them, rather, I liked them too much. They were doing too well, and I was getting suspicious. Surely, there should have been a flop by now. Did they sign contracts in tandem with the devil?

And then they decided to do Doctor Strange. It had Actual Magic, not just the techno-magic that they hand-waved away in Thor. Was this the flop? Would their arcane ability to consistently produce quality movies finally fail?

Nope! It was great. The plot is straightforward enough. **** gets his comeuppance and becomes a better person, while making funny jokes. Sorry, that’s Ironman. Doctor Strange follows Stephan Strange, a brilliant surgeon, as he loses his ability to use his hands and gains the ability to magically alter reality. Along the way, he learns to be compassionate and selfless, and also how to be a badass and fight evil people.

The movie is goddamned spectacle. Magic scatters in glowing yellow geometric shapes from character’s hands and entire cities fold on themselves as the characters fight over the fracturing landscape. There was a mesmerizing scene where lightning cracked over the sky for three minutes as time slowed down. In a scene earlier, the Ancient One basically destroys Strange’s entire worldview via astral projection. He spins out into the universe and hands grow from his hands grow from his hands. Inspiration was drawn from tessellations, which, good job movie! You made a great choice. My eyes enjoyed your decision.

A not so quick aside about the whitewashing issue: Marvel as a whole has a problem with white-washing characters, and that definitely popped up here. Tilda Swinton was cast as the Ancient One, a character who was traditionally a Tibetan man. The producers explained it away, saying the character was already a racist stereotype, and that casting a Tibetan actor would hurt them financially in China. While I understand their reasoning, I still think they made the wrong decision. In the movie, the Ancient One was explained to be more of a title than a name, implying that there could have previously been a Tibetan Ancient One. They could have kept the concept of that being a title, but also cast someone who was Asian, therefore eliminating the racist stereotypes of the original character, and being able to cast someone who would do well in China. They were already re-writing the character, so why not re-write the racist aspects, instead of just casting someone who is white instead? I think the movie would have been better if they had done that instead, as the whitewashing is a very dark stain on an otherwise enjoyable movie. Doctor Strange also faceplanted over a rock that most Marvel movies do. The villains were kinda boring. There was our big evil boy, eldritch attempt Dormammu, who rules the Dark Dimension and is mostly just a giant head ribbed for his and her pleasure who hates clocks. But while he is literally the largest, he’s not the main baddie our heroes fight. That honor goes to Kaecilius, one of Dormammu’s acolytes, who’s name spellcheck absolutely despises. He wants to summon Dormammu, even though it is an objectively terrible idea, mostly because he got upset at the Ancient One. I’m simplifying it a bit, but not much. He’s pretty emotionally and morally shallow. The scariest villains are the ones you relate to, and while I do occasionally smudge my mascara, I don’t ever see myself trying to summon an ancient being that would suspend all of humanity in an eternal hellscape. Ever.

But while Kaecilius himself and Big Daddy Dormammu weren’t the most compelling, the end of the movie was fun as hell. Most Marvel movies end with a sky beam of doom and then a lot of punching whereas Doctor Strange ended with sky reality breach of doom and a bunch of cool time crap. Strange is brilliant, and the movie remembers that, which is always reassuring.

While most the plot can be kinda paint by numbers, and the reoccurring issue of whitewashing is crappy, Marvel does know how to make a fun movie, especially when they’re given snarky ****s. The quippy dialogue combined with the spectacular effects does make for great popcorn fare. It doesn’t really hold up against deeper analysis like I would hope a multidimensional movie might, but honestly, it’s not supposed to.

I didn't have high expectations and that really helped me love this film. Benedict Cumberbatch is the perfect Doctor Strange and I am glad Marvel keeps getting all this massive talent for their movies. Visually, it is probably the best MCU movie up to this point. The 'magic' effects are beautiful, the greenscreen work is superb. It is Marvel, so the film is also really funny and we all know Cumberbatch nails comedic characters with an a-hole attitude. Unfortunately, even this movie does not get rid of a long-existing flaw in most MCU films, the weak villains. While Mats Mikkelsen is a great actor, he doesn't really feel threatening or scary. He is just... evil. All in all this movie is pretty darn good and I will definetly rewatch it multiple times. P.S.: This movie has one of the best post-credit scenes ever. Definetely wait for it. Derrickson has head spinning schemes and the whiplash you get is not your average painful regret but a breath of fresh air.

Doctor Strange

Derrickson has a spooky image when it comes to filmmaking but contradicting everyone's expectations, his entry on MCU is the simplest, smoothest and sanest of all. It makes sense. Period. That should have been his job and he made it his until you nod to the most senseless argument of all; not the visual effects, no, never. They make more sense than you'd expect it to be, even when there is an entire world flipped upside down; literally, Scott Derrickson, the co-writer and director, maps out an intricate puzzle for us to solve that is not just a delightful but an overwhelming experience. The writing is balanced on all the aspects, the physical sequences, visual galores, enlightening conversations and humor, so smooth and smartly weaved out where laugh goes unnoticed unlike any other chapter of this franchise.

So balanced is the writing that Benedict Wong gets a final laugh, Rachel McAdams- the respect, Chiwetel Ejiofor- a clean direction and Michael Stuhlbarg- an opportunity. But above all Tilda Swinton's captivating performance of a truly wise saint digs deeper than even Benedict Cumberbatch could. She pleads and cries like a four year old and blesses, "Death is what gives life meaning." and you THEN completely surrender to her sorcery.

There is a jarring impact on your emotions when her voice stutters in a disappointment, not in others, no she regrets and criticizes her own inadequacies. Cumberbatch, as the inflated egoistic mastermind with of course superiority complex, comes in handy for him, his years of practice in breathing life to Sherlock Holmes has given him a partial boost, but as the film ages, you discover how different he is from the previously cloaked version of him, and that journey is intentional and frankly a curvy joyous ride- observing Doctor Strange with an awe.

Compared to what Marvel has always produced until now 'Doctor Strange' appears to be one of their best movies. Still there remains many aspects to take care of.

First of all this movie beneits from the memorable Benedict Cumberbatch's presence and prestance (as Doctor Strange) who continues to embody unidimensional ingenious high-IQ characters. The studio also managed to enroll Mads Mikkelsen (as Kaecilius) who truly delivers a surprisingly underwhelming performance all along the feature. But he just couldn't reach the abyssal pathetic and repulsive Tilda Swinton's non-acting skills (and good for him). The scenario is almost okay as things start to get messier and messier as the plot goes on. I guess Marvel couldn't help but throw vague concepts of dark dimensions, multiverse, infinity gems, strange magic and space-time distortions directlt in amazed our faces. Fortunately 'Doctor Strange' also takes time to question major issues in our society as the pride to be a doctor, the arrogance, the self-made man myth, the place of magic, surnatural and religion in our minds and the many unacknowledged vulnerabilities we all live with. All these interesting subjects are tackled with terrific Inception-esque CGI and visual effects, gorgeous lighting and colours, great stagings and notable characters.

We're not surprised to find that everything that adds up to these points is what Marvel has always done and still does. The structure is terribly predictable and despite the great identities of the characters, very few of them develop in any meaningful way throughout the film. Creating empathy for Doctor Strange was really hard to me. I guess the alchemy just didn't show up.

The titular character isn't entirely likeable, he is somewhat of an anti-hero but the film is pretty engrossing and I imagine appeals to a teenage audience (and teens at heart I suppose). It was a decent watch, even though I did get a bit confused about some of the plot details but then I'm not familiar with the Marvel universe, character wise, so again thats to be expected I guess. It's visually beautiful, wizard karate set pieces, unique climax, compelling villains, and out of the blue jokes is what makes this movie interesting.

I didn't know anything about Dr Strange, but I found him really cool looking (yep, the same thing as Captain America; you can check out my review for The First Avenger if you want). A cool, cape wearing man using magic to open portals and create yellow beams? Count me in! And trust me when I say this movie is even better than what I was expecting it to be.

Dr Stephen Strange is just a casual minded, gifted doctor who is filthy rich and a playboy. Basically the medical version of Tony Stark. And after the accident he loses his power of using his hands. The very thing that made him special is taken away from him because of one moment of carelessness. I actually shrieked in pain when I saw his hands stitched. And then seeing him unable to use his hands left me in introspection. I had never realised how much I use my hands to do my everyday things.

And then he goes to Kathmandu to get find the sorceress who could heal him. The thieves who came to attack him also left me in introspection - what would I do if something like that happens to me? He is saved by one of the wizards and is taken to the Ancient One. She teaches him to be a wizard. I rarely like the training montages in movies, but this one is an exception, especially when the handless man makes the spiral. The part where he steals the books from the library is also very funny.

The hospital fight scene, the portals fight scene and the Dormammu scenes were all fun to watch. A lot happens in the movie and I don't want to give too much detail from it, so I'll just get to what all I like about this movie. The visuals are simply gorgeous, to say the least, the score absolutely suits it, Benedict Cumberbatch's performance as Dr Strange is just like his comic counterpart, every scene is fun to watch as it's either funny or engaging and a huge amount of character development happens throughout the movie.

Doctor Strange is my favourite MCU movie based on one character, and my second favourite after Avengers: Infinity War. If I have to show a "preview" of what MCU is all about to someone who has no interest in the franchise (like my sister for example), I'd show them this movie, since I'm absolutely confident that they'd love it.

The Incredible Hulk isn't very Incredible.
Edward Norton gives a good performance but the concept of Hulk itself just seems tired. There is no new outlook on the hero just simply a repeatedly mediocre take on a very one dimensiona

An excellent and well-written origin story for Doctor Strange, filled with stunning visuals and great action scenes. Doctor Strange is a welcome addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe because it desperately needed some magic users.

Doctor Strange is an excellent Marvel. CGI is wonderful here. As well as the story, action and soundtrack. Another great film from Marvel that I can recommend.

Benedict Cumberbatch is perfect casting as Doctor Strange, the action scenes were both exciting and extremely creative, the film was hilarious and was also a total feast for the eyes!
