Half of the movie was PERFECT! Some of the ideas were mind blowing! very well directed. CGI were real! 3/4 the movie gets alittle boring and the ending was alitte weak with the villain of the movie.

Overall a SOILD 8 out of 10

There's a love interest that feels forced, which drains storytelling from the main plot. There's also extremely awkward, cheesy humor that's obviously used to garner reactions from really young and really old people. Though these moments are more frequent than I'd like, it isn't particularly intrusive. The visuals are incredible. If you want to see a prime example of visual effects this year, check out Doctor Strange. Expand

Cumberbatch does a fantastic job as the title character. The plot is action packed, Fast paced and plenty interesting to watch. There's no real major flaws to it other than the often hit n miss humor.

This was one of the few movies that I thought used 3D well. I am not a big fan of 3D. It took it's time developing the main character and wasn't all special effects laden action like most comic based movies. However, I would have liked to see more different kinds of magic. Rather than come up with a large variety of magic spells, they just kept repeating the spells that you had already seen. They should have given Mads Mikkelsen as the villain more screen time. He is a great presence in all of the movies that I have seen him in. I also liked Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange.

Strange spends most of the movie adjusting to his new role. I'm excited to see the next Strange tale now that he has embraced his role. I think this character has a lot of potential. There are 2 separate additional scenes at the end of the movie. The 1st after the cast credits is only targeted at humor. The 2nd after the film credits sets up the sequel. I'm skeptical about their chosen sequel plot and the character motivations behind it.

Marvel brings to the screen a new superhero it has never evoked before and it doesn't disappoint at all. The story of the arrogant neurosurgeon turned into a mystical superhero might sound cliché, but with strong performances from Benedict Cumberbatch (damn, he truly killed it, but then again, he always does, doesn't he?) and Tilda Swinton, and outstanding visual effets and cinematography backing it up, the story really builds and takes twists and turns and comes to a totally rational and applausable conclusion. Though one of the main flaws is that Rachel McAdams should've appeared more throughout the scenes, watching this film was very enjoyable and pleasurable. Waiting for the next Marvel release! Expand

I watched the film last night, and I was blown away with the visuals/CGI effects. This is one of best looking Marvel films, probably the best looking one so far. The story has a decent pace to it, but the introduction with Doctor Strange felt rushed. I was a bit disappointed with the villain, even though the fight scenes were great, I still wanted more from the villain. Doctor Strange is very unique, and different compared to the previous Marvel films. Being different in this case is totally fine, something I want to see more from Marvel. Expand

When a science person was the chosen one in the spiritual world!

You would have not expected it from this director if you had seen his previous films. This was based on the Marvel comics that I haven't touched. So basically I had high expectation to witness another side of Marvel universe with another set of (super)heroes. And surprisingly, it was very entertaining, nothing like other Marvel's heroes/story, except the possession of superpower to fight evil forces.

Firstly, Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead in a Marvel film, I did not think it would work. All I knew is he was a great sidekick, but that image has changed here. He was wonderful, definitely I'll be looking forward to its sequel as they had confirmed at the end. The theme wise, it is similar to most of the superhero tales, but some new concepts were added to it, I mean the superpower and that's what made it so unique.

Just like 'Thor', this film as well had taken the spiritual believes only for the basic platform. The rest of the developments are the clear mix of fantasy (illusion) and science. So it means the film is for theists and atheists. I am one of those who did not like 'Inception', which I think an ordinary action film with multiple layers. But this one was so awesome and it is for the people like me who think 'Inception' failed.

Visually spectacular. I regret missing it out in digital 3D. Its Academy Awards nominee in the category of Best VFX tells the story. There will be a tough contest, even I'm up for 'Jungle Book', but I won't be sad if this wins. The success story of Marvel continues. Not everybody reads comic books, but film goers are the majority. So adaptations like this are people like me. Let them keep coming, I love this format better. This film is not just for the youngsters, but old, families, as well as kids can enjoy, so I hope you won't miss it.

Pacing is great to go along with performances, I didn't even know the movie was in its closing chapter until i checked. I did not find the villain to be anything really noteworthy or interesting and while the story is moreso on par with Marvel's more high quality films I did find it hard to understand why Marvel didn't take any new risks or alternate routes to make it more interesting than set piece fights and impressive Inception style visuals. Those who like some substance with their fluff will certainly enjoy this well-executed fusion of meaningful teachings with a rollicking good time. Admittedly, the fight sequences go on a little long at times, there are some pacing issues in the last 45 minutes and Chiwetel Ejiofor's hammy overacting becomes progressively tedious as the story unfolds, but a well-written script, superb special effects and fine performances by all of the other principals make this worthwhile viewing. ItDoctor Strange: I hate going to the movie theater nowadays. It isn't that the experience is so much worse than it was back in the good old days when men were men, children were well behaved and people dressed for going out in public. It simply is that my home theater experience is gotten so much better. Surround sound, my own snacks, my own choice of company and a decent 4k OLED screen make for a mighty fine home viewing experience. Sometimes though a movie comes out that makes we wish I had seen it in the theater. Doctor Strange is one such movie. The special effects and design are so wonderfully trippy. The story is your standard origin story with the put-upon love interest (an underused Rachel McAdams), A cocky self-assured millionaire learning a life lesson, and even a touch of ye olde chosen one. It’s all the other wonderful stuff that makes the movie. Director Scott Derrickson isn’t afraid to let his imagination run wild everything from acid trips to body horror to Inception called and they want their movie back is featured.

While this movie is not peak Marvel it is better than it had to be and certainly better than it could have been. A fun visually impressive well acted movie.

Inception fights scenes are met with gorgeous spell graphics and a strong lead. The clever humor can fall flat sometimes and the side characters are largely forgettable. But it doesn't hold the movie back from being a fun feast for the eyes.

However it is also a movie where I am not sure if it is actually that good and I was tricked into believing this. Either way I was entertained and it is a good popcorn movie. The movie is the story of the surgeon Dr. Steven Strange whose skill are close to supernatural levels and gave him fame and wealth. However he is also quite arrogant and not the nicest person while being no total **** Think a bit of a nicer version of Dr. House or other say Tony Stark as surgeon (but less playboy). His life and fate changes when he had a car accident where his hands are badly injured and cant use them anymore on the level he needed as surgeon. This shatters him and he is searching for a way out of this situation. I stop here to avoid spoilers. It is a heroes journey of self discovery and character growth. Well done and enjoyable. Might not be the most original story but with the strong cast it becomes remarkable enough for me. For the cast we have Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange. He is one of my favourite actors and he always delivers. He is fully believable and for me the definitive choice for the character. Benedict Wong as Wong is one of my favourite side characters and hidden gem. I always want more of him. Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo delivers a truly good performance and I say he is maybe the most complex character in the movie. Tilda Swinton is a great actress and fully delivers. However the people that claim whitewashing are not wrong as the character she played was original an Asian man. As per Marvel standards back then the antagonist are a bit underdeveloped but work. In total a really good cast that improved the experience. The visuals and special effects are breathtaking. Rarely ever was I impressed like that. I am not the person who writes much about this and the last time I rememberer was about the original Jurassic Park. Here in this movie the effects add a lot and make it remarkable. Overall this was an enjoyable movie and great experience. Not the best Marvel movie but at least an 8/10. Take it with a grain of salt as I said I am not sure if it is actually that good and I was tricked into believing this. Bonus: I recommend the “What If “ episode “What if Dr. Strange lost his Heart instead of his hands?” for a remarkable story about love, grief and loss. Even if you dislike the show it is an episode that is worth watching. Expand

The only thing that kind of holds it back is the villains, which I feel is another point where Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t quite got down outside of the NetFlix series, and Loki of course. The film is a really entertaining ride and I would really recommend you check it out, especially at the cinema since I fear some of it won’t play as well on DVD and Blu Ray. It’s a really great film and what really sells it is Cumberbatch in the lead role. Oh, and if you are going to see it, stick around for the credits, once again, there are 2 post credit scenes. Expand

Doctor Strange may not be as well-rounded as this year’s Civil War, or some of the other Marvel gems, but it is a really good film on it’s own merit. Doctor Strange features mind bending visuals, entertaining thrills, and a fresh look at the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU). Doctor Strange is yet another strong entry in the ever impressive MCU, which makes it harder and harder to argue, that Marvel is the premiere film studio today.
This movie described simply is like watching the avengers while on acid, and the special effects are perfect. In this film the characters dance between many different realities, and essentially within these realities everything can be manipulated by the mind. The special effects are amazing in this film, which is a true compliment, because many films this year struggled with overly digitized special effects. In this film, it’s obvious that there are special effects, but they look very realistic.
The acting in this film is very good, as Benedict Cumberbatch brings his usual intense personality into his character. The action sequences are very well shot, and the film is subtly very funny. It’s admirable that Marvel refuses to step away from humor, because it’s become their true signature. One weak point about this film was that some of the characters were very flat, the villain especially so. Unfortunately, Mads Mikkelsen gives a great performance, but his character is yet another generic evil character, consumed by a bigger evil force, with little development as to why. That being said this film wasn’t all that original, but it didn’t feel recycled either. This is most likely because this film introduced viewers to the more cosmic side of the MCU. Much like Guardians of the Galaxy took viewers off earth, this film takes viewers out of normal reality. It’s impressive that Marvel can have so many characters in so many different atmospheres. In the end this film is yet another solid Marvel film. It’s not the best marvel film ever, but it’s a very entertaining, funny, well-acted, and creative film that is perfect for viewers of all ages. The film struggled a little with a cliched villain, some marvel cliches, and the occasional overly-expository dialogue. For those with children this film is perfect for them, and for those who love action or comic book film, give this film a look.

Expand

Dr. Strange is, appropriately enough, a strange movie. It is both something new and yet the exact same thing we've come to expect from Marvel Origin Movies lately.

The story of Steven Strange is one tread upon repeatedly, using what I like to call the Marvel Origin Movie Formula: Person has a problem, finds solution via gaining/making powers, training montage of improving those abilities, enter main villain, small fight with villain leading up to bigger fight with villain. There are, however, several points that this movie vastly breaks away from the mold. The first point is the setting. Magic might have been touched upon in Thor, but they go head first into the deep end of using magic in this movie. It helps it to stand out from the other films. Second is the climax. It's a clever change from the usual ultimate battle finale we've come to expect from these films, having Strange use his brain instead of his power to win.

The characters are, unfortunately, total retreads as well. Dr. Strange particularly feels like another Tony Stark. A lot of the character development is easy to see coming, though I have to say there are a few scenes that, again, help to break away from the usual for Marvel. The villain of the picture has a nice monologue that, gasp, gives him character. Not a lot, but it's more than usual for many Marvel movie villains. Unfortunately, he and a particular other villain seem to be cast aside, but thankfully there's a chance left open for both of them to come back rather than just outright crossing them off. There's a touching and interesting scene with the mentor of the film, and it's nice that, in a refreshing change of pace, everyone is willing to call out the main character for his...Stark-ness.

The action in this movie is pretty damn cool, mostly because of said effects being incorporated into it. There is one particular shot in the movie that I think was meant to be the big "HELL YEAH" moment, and I am so very, very glad that it wasn't spoiled in advertising because it made that shot all the more glamorous.

The long and short of the film is this: If you love the Marvel Origin Movie formula, you'll love this movie. If you're getting tired of the formula, you'll be pleasantly surprised with a couple of things in the film and enjoy the new atmosphere made by being immersed in the magical side of the MCU. Strange is a good addition to the MCU, but it's hard to look past the fact that Marvel's kinda stuck in a rut with the formula. Here's hoping Spider-Man and Black Panther will break the mold.

The plot - for the most part - was pretty good. Benedict Cumberbatch was simply a great cast, his acting made Doctor Strange all the more enjoyable.

The only element which prevents the film from being amazing as a whole, was the uneasy vagueness I felt from certain scenes. This was mainly to do with how some key moments were explained - I felt that at times it was a bit too unclear for my taste making the film slightly convoluted and difficult to follow.

Overall, a very enjoyable film.

First off the best part of the film are it's visuals, the film looks spectacular, especially in it's dimension bending, and reality changing scenes (Recommend seeing the film in IMAX), the performances are all very well done. Bennedict Cumberbatch being a great Doctor Strange, and the rest of the cast doing their parts well enough. The films ultimate flaw is, as I said, it's a little to predictable and average. The action's better than most Marvel movies, but it all feels the same, the villain isn't awful, but like most isn't all that memorable or menacing. Doctor Strange is one of the better MCU films but still has the flaws that the rest of the MCU is plagued with. The performances are good, The Visuals are freaking amazing, but just doesn't have have enough new things to bring to the table to make it really rise up from the MCU Expand

Overall it was a very fun, unique movie with a very interesting premise and the areas the franchise could take Dr. Strange in the future range from horror to fantasy which get me excited for a sequel. The movie however doesn't come without some faults. I was hoping for just a little more depth to each of the characters and wished Dormammu brought a little more of the horror element out of the movie. Other than that the movie was solid, and I definitely recommend it. Expand

Over the past few years, Marvel's movies have seemed to take on a certain monotony. At their very best, they're still just more of the same. Though I've enjoyed everything that Marvel has been putting out, I've been desperately hoping for something new - some new blood to revitalize the Marvel Universe. And Doctor Strange does exactly that.

At it's core, Doctor Strange is a Marvel movie. It has the same humor, story, and characters you expect to see in a Marvel movie. But now we're formally introduced to magic in the MCU. And it's thrilling to watch. Not only is the movie's use of magic visually exciting, it has given us some of the most fun and creative action sequences ever seen in a comic book movie.

The entire cast was great. After seeing the trailers, I expected to be put off by Benedict Cumberbatch's American accent, but it didn't phase me at all. He was fun to watch, and did an amazing job at selling me on all the bizarre trips that the film takes you on. I can't wait to see him appear again in the MCU.

Doctor Strange is easily one of Marvel's best. It left me optimistic for where their Cinematic Universe is going from here.

It also has a very similar narrative structure, since the first half takes its time to fully establish the protagonist, and the second is more dedicated to the larger-than-life threat he has to stop (Batman Begins also comes to mind).

Despite being an arrogant jerk, Stephen Strange is easy to like thanks to a nuanced and charismatic performance from Benedict Cumberbatch. The supporting cast is equally great as well, even though Rachel McAdams doesn't get a lot to do.

Scott Derrickson's direction provides visuals that look like a Steve Ditko comic coming to life, genuinely heartbreaking moments and out-of-the-box action scenes. But I was surprised that the movie wasn't any scary considering the subject matter (alternate dimensions and sorcery) and Derrickson's horror background. The humor is hit and miss (the singer name-dropping was pretty lame), but the actors' delivery gives it more punch.

The movie's biggest problem is that its pacing gets overly fast at times, especially considering there's a lot of information to digest. The second act in particular barely has any moments to breathe.

Doctor Strange stays within the safe boundaries we've come to expect from Marvel, but that doesn't stop it from being a generally satisfying entry in the series.

This isn't visual transformation in a smoky graveyard (a la Harry Potter); this is an Inception-level of visual magic-scapes. And even if the "rich guy loses it and finds redemption" story sounds similar to some others, it is executed so well - and the actors are such a pleasure to watch - that genre redundancies are hard to notice. An excellent soundtrack from Michael Giacchino reinforces the action (though those with sharp ears will hear similarities to Harry Potter and Star Trek). Even if you haven't heard of Doctor Strange before, or read any of his comics (as I hadn't prior to this film), well worth a watch - provided you are prepared to revel in visual magical absurdities. I am an enormous comic book fan, but I have never even deigned to pick up an issue. The reason being this; Strange has always been too well, strange for me. His immense, and undefinable power has never attracted my interest, and I've often wondered how a "sorcerer supreme" could be the source of any decent storytelling. Well, thanks to Scott Derrickson, I wonder no longer.

While bearing many of the telltale signs of the MCU, Dr. Strange is a rather unique organism. While an orgin story, it is not one of physical strength, or endowment of immense power, but one of magical study. Yes, that's right, magic. Not science we don't understand yet, pure, honest-to-goodness. abra-cadabra, hocus-pocus, magic. Dr. Strange, a self-absorbed medical genius, is confronted with an existential crisis, in which he must humble himself, and learn an entirely new profession. Cumberbatch plays excellently, a man who's entire world comes crashing down upon him, and who must remake himself as a new man.

The love interest, a crucial component of any Marvel origin story, surprisingly turns out to be one of the most compelling parts of the film. Christine, Strange's ex-lover, is there the entire film, not as a romantic counterpart, but as a friend, and several times as a savior. There is love between the two of them, but divergent from the Marvel norm, the kiss at the end of the movie, is one on the cheek.

The movie is though, carried almost solely by its action. This is the most unique and entertaining part of the film. Buildings fold in upon themselves, capes put men in chokeholds, and portals are used as a weapon in combat. But in my humble opinion, the best action sequence s the scene in which while being operated upon, Dr. Strange engages in astral combat with his enemy. It encompasses the movie perfectly. It is brutal and unrelenting, and totally unseen by the world we live in. It is hard to understand, and confusing; the physics of the astral world are left mostly unexplained, and the viewer must figure out for themself what the combatants will or won't pass through. Most of all, its funny. Christine's baffled expressions as objects crash around the room are hysterical.

Like I said before, I had no expectation of enjoying Doctor Strange, but I did, Immensely. Simply because it is so delightfully different. Marvel has realized that in this golden age of comic book movies, a tonal differentiation is required for a movie to be fresh and engaging. This is an excellent call on their part. While Doctor Strange's manipulation of reality as a cinematic technique can be a bit shticky at times, its definitely fun to watch.

Marvel already has the perfect formula for their movies and apparently will not change that soon.
Strange Doctor could be much more serious and less formulaic, would be great and one of Marvel's best if the parties with jokes in moments of tension were cut. Well, putting a joke in the middle of the fight with a villain is totally anticlimax and that's the big flaw of the movie, it's full of them. An exaggerated humor causing the impact of certain scenes to be greatly impaired. It does not give the story the seriousness it needs.
Besides, I do not have many reservations, the villain appears just to be ashamed, but this is already Marvel's custom and does not bother me any more.
The film entertains, but if the third phase of Marvel has started like this, I will not wait much more of it, and even bet here that the note of the next films will be between 6 and 7.

What you are given is a spectacular tale of a man who defies all odds, to learn the art and craft of magic, who is magnificently played by the great Benedict Cumberbatch. Other than Benedict, the film boasts a stellar cast with the likes of Mads Mikkelsen, Tilda Swinton, Rachael McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor, who all play their parts great as well. Accompanied by top-quality visuals, interesting origin stories and one of most fascinating music scores in Marvel history, you are giving one of the better Marvel films in recent memory.

With 2016 slowly drawing to a close, the year of movies hasn't been the most satisfying as major blockbusters haven't been able to reach the heights we wished they would. I have been slightly disappointed with what has come out so far this year, with the likes of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, X-Men Apocalypse and Jason Bourne failing to live up to the hype. I believe Doctor Strange is up there with some of the best this year, which include Captain America: Civl War, Finding Dory, Zootopia, Deadpool and the Jungle Book. Not only do the visuals take your mind away, but it shows that Marvel still has what it takes to make good films (especially with so many superhero movies coming out in the next couple of years). It also proves that Marvel is capable of placing unknown directors with big blockbuster movies, like what they did with James Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy and Scott Derrickson with this movie. It also sets up the character well for future movies as Benedict has confirmed he will take part in Avengers: Infinity Wars and possibly other Marvel movies.

If I were to make one criticism for the movie, it'll have to be the overuse and forcefulness of humor, especially when the movie started to get more serious. But, it did make the audience laugh in some moments, so it isn't much of a concern. To finish off, we are taken on a visually impressive journey throughout Doctor Strange's world and how he prepares to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a big way.

Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the titular role with little difficulty, resulting from a cocky doctor on the rise to a man who has lost everything he deems important to him. The big aspect of the film, its visual splendor, is used just in that way, making the 3D a feast for the eyes. The story and humor are on point as usual from one of the biggest brands in the world. Though it's the characters that really sell this film, with the controversial Tilda Swindon's Ancient One stealing the show from Cumberbatch many times. The film only falters in the character usage of a couple of its cast, most notable Rachel Adams playing Cumberbatch'a love interest, and does lose points for the obvious parallels between its story and that of Marvel's Iron Man. Doctor Strange would have most likely earned a solid 7 from me, if it weren't for the breath-taking visual effects.

Characters: One problem I had with Dr. Strange's character is that we never really get to sympathize for him. He starts out as a jerk (a rather charming jerk that is, since he is portrayed by Cumberbatch) and suddenly becomes a relatively good person within a few scenes. There wasn't even a real scene where Strange has a breakthrough moment and suddenly masters sorcery, he just kind of masters it somewhat off camera. Rachel McAdams' character was underwritten and basically just there for some love interest since they needed one. Otherwise, the characters are as good as most Marvel superheroes are; just good, not amazing or completely original or anything.

Acting: Benny Batch was a great pick for Dr. Strange, but they might as well have just let him keep his British accent. His American accent still needs some tweaking, though it is a major improvement from Black Mass. He over-enunciates a few words like "New yORk", and it took a little time to adjust to his throaty American accent because I've matched his voice and accent with his face for so long. McAdams didn't really do anything, but she was fine for what she did do. Chewy Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton were also very good.

Plot: It's basically a basic Marvel plot. Blah blah, some bad thing happens and now they need to heal and accidentally get a new superpower, whoops now he has to save the world, and yay he saves it in the end against all odds. But once you look past the predictable plot, the movie is enjoyable and fun.

Humor: Lots of the humor fell flat in this movie, but there are a few scenes here and there that can generate a good laugh.

Action: The action is very well done, among some of the best Marvel fight scenes I've ever seen.

Effects: The effects have got to be some of the best I've seen in a while. How they managed to generate mind-bending effects that aren't headache-inducing I have no idea. I understand that it must have taken days if not months to make the animations and everything, but there were really only about two full scenes that used these amazing effects to their fullest. I would've liked more scenes like the two, but I do respect the time it most likely took just to make those two scenes.

Overall, I would recommend Doctor Strange, as it is a fun, enjoyable movie. I was anticipating a bit more action, and left the theater wanting a bit more considering how well-done the fight scenes were. It's a very Marvel movie that doesn't break the basic Marvel formula, but is still enjoyable in the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn’t want to like Doctor Strange, mostly because Benedict Cumberbatch had gotten so popular that I couldn’t stand him. He had reached the point of oversaturation, like some baritone-voiced coffee that had spilled over and completely overwhelmed the one meager napkin you had.

And then I watched it. And goddammit, Cumberbatch was great. I remembered why he had gotten so outrageously popular: the man is charismatic.

I had similar feelings about Marvel movies as a whole. I had loved them initially, buying over-priced tshirts at Hot Topic and arguing with friends over who the best Avenger was. (It’s Ironman, don’t @ me.) And then the movies kept coming. That isn’t to say that I didn’t like them, rather, I liked them too much. They were doing too well, and I was getting suspicious. Surely, there should have been a flop by now. Did they sign contracts in tandem with the devil?

And then they decided to do Doctor Strange. It had Actual Magic, not just the techno-magic that they hand-waved away in Thor. Was this the flop? Would their arcane ability to consistently produce quality movies finally fail?

Nope! It was great. The plot is straightforward enough. **** gets his comeuppance and becomes a better person, while making funny jokes. Sorry, that’s Ironman. Doctor Strange follows Stephan Strange, a brilliant surgeon, as he loses his ability to use his hands and gains the ability to magically alter reality. Along the way, he learns to be compassionate and selfless, and also how to be a badass and fight evil people.

The movie is goddamned spectacle. Magic scatters in glowing yellow geometric shapes from character’s hands and entire cities fold on themselves as the characters fight over the fracturing landscape. There was a mesmerizing scene where lightning cracked over the sky for three minutes as time slowed down. In a scene earlier, the Ancient One basically destroys Strange’s entire worldview via astral projection. He spins out into the universe and hands grow from his hands grow from his hands. Inspiration was drawn from tessellations, which, good job movie! You made a great choice. My eyes enjoyed your decision.

A not so quick aside about the whitewashing issue: Marvel as a whole has a problem with white-washing characters, and that definitely popped up here. Tilda Swinton was cast as the Ancient One, a character who was traditionally a Tibetan man. The producers explained it away, saying the character was already a racist stereotype, and that casting a Tibetan actor would hurt them financially in China. While I understand their reasoning, I still think they made the wrong decision. In the movie, the Ancient One was explained to be more of a title than a name, implying that there could have previously been a Tibetan Ancient One. They could have kept the concept of that being a title, but also cast someone who was Asian, therefore eliminating the racist stereotypes of the original character, and being able to cast someone who would do well in China. They were already re-writing the character, so why not re-write the racist aspects, instead of just casting someone who is white instead? I think the movie would have been better if they had done that instead, as the whitewashing is a very dark stain on an otherwise enjoyable movie. Doctor Strange also faceplanted over a rock that most Marvel movies do. The villains were kinda boring. There was our big evil boy, eldritch attempt Dormammu, who rules the Dark Dimension and is mostly just a giant head ribbed for his and her pleasure who hates clocks. But while he is literally the largest, he’s not the main baddie our heroes fight. That honor goes to Kaecilius, one of Dormammu’s acolytes, who’s name spellcheck absolutely despises. He wants to summon Dormammu, even though it is an objectively terrible idea, mostly because he got upset at the Ancient One. I’m simplifying it a bit, but not much. He’s pretty emotionally and morally shallow. The scariest villains are the ones you relate to, and while I do occasionally smudge my mascara, I don’t ever see myself trying to summon an ancient being that would suspend all of humanity in an eternal hellscape. Ever.

But while Kaecilius himself and Big Daddy Dormammu weren’t the most compelling, the end of the movie was fun as hell. Most Marvel movies end with a sky beam of doom and then a lot of punching whereas Doctor Strange ended with sky reality breach of doom and a bunch of cool time crap. Strange is brilliant, and the movie remembers that, which is always reassuring.

While most the plot can be kinda paint by numbers, and the reoccurring issue of whitewashing is crappy, Marvel does know how to make a fun movie, especially when they’re given snarky ****s. The quippy dialogue combined with the spectacular effects does make for great popcorn fare. It doesn’t really hold up against deeper analysis like I would hope a multidimensional movie might, but honestly, it’s not supposed to.

The comedy level in the film is a little lower than Deadpool but I think it is accurate and enough. There is a wonderful feast formed by visual effects in the movie, I got dizzy because of visual effects especially in the 2nd part of the movie. Only problem about the movie is that Rachel McAdams seems a little distracted and I did not like her performance. Expand

I didn't have high expectations and that really helped me love this film. Benedict Cumberbatch is the perfect Doctor Strange and I am glad Marvel keeps getting all this massive talent for their movies. Visually, it is probably the best MCU movie up to this point. The 'magic' effects are beautiful, the greenscreen work is superb. It is Marvel, so the film is also really funny and we all know Cumberbatch nails comedic characters with an a-hole attitude. Unfortunately, even this movie does not get rid of a long-existing flaw in most MCU films, the weak villains. While Mats Mikkelsen is a great actor, he doesn't really feel threatening or scary. He is just... evil. All in all this movie is pretty darn good and I will definetly rewatch it multiple times. P.S.: This movie has one of the best post-credit scenes ever. Definetely wait for it.

Cumberbatch perfectly embodies Strange’s arrogant and narcissistic personality but via the script is allowed to go through a nice character arc that lays the groundwork for Strange in future MCU movies. The supporting actors do a great job of helping Strange develop and progress as a character, which gives each of them moments to shine and capitalize on their screen time. The fight sequences are above average and are almost certain to keep viewers’ eyes glued to the screen. One thing I really appreciated about the movie is that Strange isn’t the only character who’s allowed to go through an arc. Mordo also goes through some interesting development, which shows that the writers weren’t afraid to give a character with less screen time some progression that almost certainly lays the foundation for Mordo’s appearances in the future. Lastly, the CGI and special effects are some of the best that we’ve seen in the MCU so far and set a high bar for other movies in the franchise. I do have two main criticisms of the film, though. First, this origin story has the same structural formula as Iron Man: a wealthy, arrogant, brilliant guy gets into an accident that alters his perspective on the world and makes him change. Doctor Strange is just a CGI and special effects enhanced version of this, meaning it’s an origin story we’ve seen before and doesn’t add much to the MCU canon. Also, while all the effects are good, they’re bordering on being overused since the film relies so heavily on them and uses so much of them. Overall, Doctor Strange is a solid entry in the MCU and should keep viewers interested and engaged for the full runtime. Expand

This movie is the bomb! Visually it's spectacular, I can't believe how Marvel didn't give Scott Derrickson the trust he deserved. If it was "only" for creative differences, it was enough simply to find a compromise that was good for both.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Perfectly enjoyable fun. Sound familiar? Doctor Strange being a
different kind of hero doesn't really excuse most of this film's
conventional plotting.

There's a much more interesting film in here, one in which Mads
Mikkelsen isn't the main villain (yet) and getting in the way of the
hero's journey and in which Tilda Swinton is even more ambiguous. Her obvious parallels to Stephen are perfectly apt and yet not allowed enough time to breathe and spin. It's all a last minute reveal and then a call to arms because plot and all is well because plot.

A lot has been made of the "trippy" special effects, and I guess they
are compared to the traditional visuals employed in these types of
movies. But let's not get carried away. Besides the travels through
space and mind it's mostly buildings moving around like they're in
Inception.

I didn't buy the last end credits scene. Useless and not earned. I'm
sick of hero's with photographic memories. Let the hero be exceptional on their own merits. Action scenes could be less choppily edited. But still, it's fun in ways other recent Marvel movies haven't been.

He plays an arrogant neurosurgeon who suffers a devastating accident and resorts to mysticism for a "cure." This results in his acquisition of superpowers and a cool cape. Unlike many of these flicks, this one doesn't rely on typically destructive physical encounters. Instead there are trippy visual effects and cool superpowers. There are also several tedious scenes of metaphysical mumbo jumbo that stop the pace and a sometimes confusing sense of what's actually happening. Cumberbatch ably handles his character's haughtiness with depth. There's also a touch of humor to keep things from getting too self-important. Overall, it's more original and better than many in the franchise, but it's still somewhat mystifying and overly talky. NOTE: As usual, stay thru the credits for a somewhat puzzling teaser. Expand

The decade old formula of these Marvel movies is starting to wear a little thin these days to be honest but it's hard to deny that Doctor Strange does still makes for an entertaining couple of hours for Super Hero fans. Some of the scenes, such as the one where everything around the protagonists is moving backwards in time, are absolutely spectacular and there is as ever plenty of comical and light hearted moments. The Doctor is perhaps one of the least known out of all of their characters, yet he is still pulling in huge numbers. The big question is whether or not the film lives up to the hype, and I can honestly say, I'm not really sure. Dr. Steven Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a world renowned surgeon, who is badly injured in a car accident. When modern medicine fails him, Strange starts looking for alternative treatments and finds a bizarre ancient group, that claims they can teach him how to heal himself, and do a whole lot more. The big appeal of this movie, at least for me was the special effects. I knew the effects would be good, but Marvel really out did themselves this time. I watch close to three hundred films a year, and I'm not often impressed by special effects, but the effects in this movie really blew me away. That being said, this is just one of those film you have to shell out the extra money to see in 3D. It's a completely different experience in 3D and you really will be amazed by some of the things they can do. As for the story, it really is the same thing that Marvel keeps doing over and over again. I've really enjoyed the Marvel films and while they are all unique in their own way, the underlying theme always seems to be the same. Someone gets hurt, they lose the girl they love, they find someone or a group of someones who help make them extraordinary, then they fight the bad guys and in the process get the girl. It's a formula that is in every single one of their films and it's getting a little tiresome. The bottom line, Doctor Strange is pure Marvel. What I mean by that is, it's the expected story, with unique traits specific to this character, a Stan Lee cameo, a cast full of superstars, two scenes after the credits, and perhaps the best special effects you'll ever see. If you're a fan of these films, you won't be disappointed by Doctor Strange. Expand
