I liked this movie a lot, but was I the only person on the planet who got really sick from the shaky camera movement? I thought it was shakier than the Blair Witch Project.

So... as the movie progressed (slowly, at first) I didn't know who the "stars" of the movie are, where the plot was going or what the hell I was getting myself into. So, I just let it unfold and ended up getting caught up totally in the story. It's refreshing to have a film surprise you. It is very bloody/violent. It's not very long. Don't leave - it will take off just about the time you're ready to give up on it. Enjoy. I did. Expand

This was an interesting story and well acted. I liked it quite a lot. I did feel that the filming of it was a bit choppy at times but I suppose that the nature of the news like cinematography would have something to do with that though.

Innovative, fresh, and interesting, District 9 is a mélange of genres that amazingly works well. Emotionally provocative, and thoughtful, with a dash of summer movie mayhem, it is this summer's must see movie.

They don't explain every little detail, they leave it up in the air, much like real life. *SPOLIERS* The humans are just guessing that the ship is out of fuel, etc. The truth is, that the humans are only theorizing on why they are on earth and why they can't go back. It was even mentioned in the first 10 minutes of the movie, but i see most of the negative reviews missed that point completely. It does have a shaky cam sometimes, but if you play video games or are under 30, it shouldn't be a problem at all. It's a good summer action flick which doesn't take much thought. However, the Director made one very large mistake. He began shooting scenes without script dialogue written. This led to Actors creating their own dialog and Sharlto misuse of the F word. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. District 9, a surprisingly emotional science fiction/thriller is one of the most unique and original films of the year. It starts off as a documentary, a very clever way to make the whole concept seem realistic. The concept is aliens arriving on earth and being kept in slums by the humans, and not being allowed to leave. Being produced by Peter Jackson, you would expect it to be a visual feast and it does not disappoint. The aliens, or 'prawns' as they are called, are incredibly realistic. It had a wonderful start and terrific ending, but faltered slightly in the middle when, in my opinion, all I wanted to see was how it turned out in the end. However, overall it is a fabulously unique film and deserves its Oscar nomination for 'Best Picture'. Expand

TheDistrict 9 was my favourite movie of 2009 and one of the best science fiction movies to be released in several years. The aliens join some of the best movie monsters in cinema and I found myself really caring for them and their situation. The ideas are well executed; the guns and action is thrilling and its drama works well for the most part. The movie does have some flaws; the lack of resolution to the premise is an issue, the amount of swearing is unnecessary and the middle of the film does drag a little. But District 9 is still an awesome sci-fi. Recommended. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Apartheid, political messages, action film, sci-fi, documentary....does this film balance it all well? I really don't know. What I do know is that this is definitely one of the best films I've seen this year. While watching it you are disturbed, you are disgusted, you are moved but ultimately you are most certainly entertained.
At first you see the "prawns" as being almost primitive and barbaric. As if the film is trying to justify their confinement and seclusion. This is the "stereotype" (racist?) image of them, until you get to meet one. You cannot help but root for Christopher to succeed in his mission to go home. You see the aliens differently through Christopher's eyes.
Sharlto Copley is AMAZING! His character Wikus is initially a slightly annoying, somewhat geeky everyman. Nothing special. As the film progresses, certain circumstances force him to become more understanding to what the aliens are going through, and his interaction with Christopher in particular makes him see things in a new light. He doesn't exactly become a "new man" (excuse the pun, to those who have seen the film), just more aware. This awareness leads him to do extraordinary acts, which in a way makes him more human than the rest.
I can't explain it better without giving too much of the film away. Just go see it!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. District 9, simply put, is a slum. A place nobody particularly wants to be or even wants to exist, but nonetheless is there with millions of aliens inside. This all takes place in South Africa, which is such an interesting choice considering the subject matter. South Africa's past with apartheid lends itself well to this story of discrimination and segregation, because there's always someone on the bottom. Now it's the prawns. What I noticed right away was how negatively these aliens were portrayed. I shouldn't have had any opinion on them because I was only seeing one side of the story, yet I couldn't help myself and was further surprised when my opinion and sympathies changed again. Seeing both sides is vital.

"This isn't legal!" No, these evictions were not legal but they were what MNU and seemingly the human race wanted to happen. The treatment of these aliens was cruel and in return so was the hostility the humans encountered. The biggest shift throughout in power and perspective was when Wikus got infected with the fluid and started to get discriminated against and lost his authority and respectability with his own people. As soon as he starts to transform he becomes vital to MNU only because of his biological potential for weaponry.

"I will fix you, but first I must save my people." The promise that determines everything from who lives, who dies, and when the mothership leaves. Very action-packed after a long time spent leading up to this emotional climax, yet it's like we hardly get any sort of resolution. I'm not left with a sense of fulfillment from this story, because it didn't end. Sure, they left potential for a sequel, but the last third was disappointing when you think about what could have been. I guess we may never know what happens to Christopher, the aliens, and Wikus.

Unfortunately this is where the film fails miserable, but to me pretty much everything else about District 9 saves the film and puts it at a level way beyond mediocrity. Under apartheid, the native population of South Africa was guilty of only one thing, being black. On that basis alone, babies were born into a limited world without civil rights and shanty town life with their ill-fated parents. Having Under apartheid, the native population of South Africa was guilty of only one thing, being black. On that basis alone, babies were born into a limited world without civil rights and shanty town life with their ill-fated parents. Having committed no crime, such institutionalized disenfranchisement, without a doubt, was an injustice, which inspired Jerry Dammers of The Specials to give up ska and write the consciousness-raising anthem "Free Nelson Mandela". Do the oppressed aliens in "District 9" deserve their own anthem too? With a little more exposition, their sudden appearance in the Johannesburg sky would have made the allegory about racial segregation resonate with less opaqueness. The film never truly establishes the extra-terrestrials as affable inter-planetary travelers. When the moviegoer first meets them, they're not friendly, or hostile; they're sick. Instead of a cure for cancer, these aliens brought along an artillery of deadly weapons. (You know they're deadly when people cheer the blood.) The humans in Robert Wise's "The Day the Earth Stood Still" act with prejudice and can't see that Klaatu is making a peace offering. By contrast, the more we witness the awesome firepower that alien technology has to offer, the less these visitors seem like victims of pure, unadulterated hatred, so the allegorical evocations of apartheid fall apart, since their perceived innocence is up for interpretation. What if the aliens reached Earth, but called off the invasion due to illness. Due to sloppy writing, that scenario is a definite possibility. The government might have been right to incarcerate the aliens, but went too far when they tortured and conducted medical experiments on their bodies. "District 9" admirably blends spinach with your popcorn, but the Johannesberg setting is problematic. The spaceship should have hovered above Berlin, or Washington D.C. Expand

Conversely, the prawns are certainly easy to sympathize with and it is too bad Christopher wasn't given more of a central role. As a whole and in spite of the main characters annoying acting and terrible personality the movie is certainly worth seeing. Expand

The film starts in quasi-documentary fashion with a strangely comic tone, but do not be put off. It gets much better. As much about the problems of the African Continent as a convential Sci-Fi. A well crafted highly original film.

Nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, this film proves to be what it's supposed to be. Nominated. Not winning. The true fact is that the whole thing isn't good, only the beginning and the end. At the beginning, the documentary style captivated me COMPLETELY. But after a while, suddenly it starts going to the "normal" style. Thats what I hated. But then, it turns back to documentary, then back to "normal", and so on. For like half an hour. Then, the story becomes interesting. It captivates me. And at the beginning, I have total DISGUST for the aliens. But somehow, the movie does it, and I realize they have feelings, and I also feel for them, as well. But that's not the best part. The middle might have been a lot of "what the?!", but the end makes up for it quite well. The intensity and sudden "Whoa." is just half of what the ending does for your entertainment. The emotional alien attachment and the truth about the lead is the other half. If you put those halts together, you get a spectacular 2/5ths of a film. So an excellent first 2/5ths and then the last 2/5ths added together makes 4/5ths of enjoyable film time, and the other 1/5ths, eh, plots the film, i guess. But all in all, District 9 fell just short of the "9" in the title, and it receives an out of 10. Expand

While science fiction features have been entertaining us for decades, District 9 breaks the mold and goes against the grain in terms of showcasing a completely different backdrop in contrast to the norm. While this flick deserves high praise for its originality, it is sadly quite convoluted in many parts. However, once the picture builds up steam, you eventually make sense of it all. Having said that, I still can't help but feel the director left it too late in the film. Expand

Sharlto Copley is fantastic in this role and this, combined with Elysium, showcase his great talent, especially while working with Neill Blommkamp. The film is also very well made and directed. The action sequences are well done and the story is told very well. The mockumentary style used at times was very unique and an interesting way of setting everything up. In addition, the special effects are stellar. The spaceships, weapons, and aliens, are brilliantly crafted and beautiful to watch. The story is very well written as well and the amount of emotion here is very nice and adds a layer of depth to the sci-fi action flick that this one is. My only concerns here are the, at times, excessive gore, which I am never a fan of and the inclusion of the Nigerians. I can see why the Nigerians took offense, but my personal concern is that it was very over the top and unsettling in a bad way, not a good unsettling, if that makes sense. Overall, District 9 is a very well made and acted science fiction film that has me looking forward to a possible sequel. Expand

District 9 blew my expectations, but it might not be as great for everyone.

Great action-sequences, deep symbolic messages and incredible casting performances is the greatest aspects with District 9. This is Sharlto Copleys’ best movie to date. I’ve never liked him before, but this blew me away. His character develops more and more throughout the movie, and from different perspectives. Very nice! There’re real chemistry between the aliens and the humans, and I totally felt close to them all! The beginning of the movie is highly unique, and strange in some way, but in the end did it really work! I’m also a big fan of the structure in the movie, and its innovation. District 9 is very realistic when it comes to how aliens and humans would react on the unknown, which really is the theme if this movie! The message of this movie is that we humans are the real threat, because of our continuous hunt for domination and power.

There are some unexpected things in this movie, and it made the movie much better! The plot is very solid, and some of the events totally made me laugh out loud of epicness! The soundeffects are at the same time freaking hilarious!

The major bad aspect of District 9 is that it isn’t as good the second time you watch it. It only works once! The ending could have had more to it, and the CGI might have been the worst I’ve seen in movie history, so hilariously bad! But it still broke all my expectations, but the CGI made me laugh. First time: 8/10. Second: 7.8/10.

7.8/10.

Hope For A Bigger Score.

District 9

Blomkamp's avant-garde hotchpotch of sci-fi and documentary genre is a smart tale retold with a refreshing accuracy in mind. And with a sharp vision as such, it is surprisingly layered and thoroughly calculated to be considered merely a summer blockbuster, there is too much art to be bent according to someone else's preference. Blomkamp doesn't suffer any fool, he is not ready to compromise and he ought not to. And despite of being plunged into a train of dark brutal images and theories for the dystopian future, his eye on tiny notions and details humanizes the perspective; the side effects caused by the parasite to the lead character like his hair loss or the vital roles that each character plays in the background.

The narration isn't hefty only to the material but to its characters too. The overly populated world is swooped across in this linear storytelling with skillful puppeteering by Blomkamp's execution. And just like the characters, the film keeps you busy with its competent and provocative nature of enfolding the screenplay with a loud ear ringing bang. Copley- both the well mannered obedient blind believer and the reckoning vigilante to the so called guardians of himself- is far more efficient as a follower than a leader.

Nevertheless with a range and power of character like such, his voice reaches individually as a performer. The supporting cast, if not extraordinary, stays to the marked timing as instructed. Blomkamp's world goes far wider than a mere district, taken account of all the possibilities, the script has managed to find its own adequate destination itself. The thrills of the chase and the sense of urgency is easily communicated with breathtaking sound effects and stunning visual effects, that paints quite a picture. District 9 is a forward pass to the sci-fi genre, not so lofty, not so cinematic, it is bitterly practical.

There were plot holes you could drive a mother-ship through in this thing, OK people, you're really getting a bit crazy here. This movie was OK, as a comic-book plot turned into a movie, but it was not, repeat NOT, high-quality sci-fi. There were plot holes you could drive a mother-ship through in this thing, from what energy source keeps the ship hovering over Johannesburg for 20 years (and why can't THAT energy be used to launch the ship??) to exactly how likely is it that superpowers like the US, China and Russia would leave little old South Africa alone to handle these aliens, who, oh by the way, might be carrying viruses and/or technology that could wipe out mankind. Sounds logical to me! Anyway, you have to think of the movie as an intelligent comic book plot. It had good cinematics, decent effects, nice acting and a fairly well-executed (if overdone) morale to the story. The development of the main character from a beurocrat who treats the aliens like lower life forms (the egg-burning scene is particularly nasty) to....well, I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say his perspective changes pretty dramatically.... Anyway, its a good movie, better than the Transformers/G.I.Joe junk we've been fed lately, but it's certainly not as good as the next level up (Matrix/Star Wars/Blade Runner), and even those aren't really, really great sci-fi....Here's hoping someone out there has the brains to produce Lord of Light....now THERE's a sci-fi story. The last hour is nothing but shooting and yelling. I know some people enjoy that, but it doesn't make a smart or original film. Near the end, one of the characters (not to spoil anything) literally uses the phrase "Go on with out me." I feel like that pretty well encapsulates the movie's descent from total originality to painful cliche. A last note: grittier, more 'real' violence (read: more disgusting and gratuitous) does not make a film any less 'Hollywood.' It's still just playing to the lowest common denominator. Expand

There is nothing particularly wrong with it, but it fails to achieve what true Science Fiction aims to do; offer up a context for discussing a current issue with all the emotional baggage removed through fantastic characters and setting. While I get the aesthetic (which was well done, convincing and wonderfully cohesive), it still made me a little sick to my stomach. Some of the final plot "twists" if you can call them that, are a little obvious and seem out of place. However, the general concept of an alien refugee camp is genius, and in many respects the CG is some of the best I've ever seen simply because the focus remains the story and never the effect. Expand

I've gone over this again and again in my head, because I was really upset about the disconnect between my experience at this movie and seemingly every other review I've read about it. I was really hyped up for this flick, because I've gone over this again and again in my head, because I was really upset about the disconnect between my experience at this movie and seemingly every other review I've read about it. I was really hyped up for this flick, because it felt like it was being made by really creative, really intellectual people who were going to present an allegory in a really new and fresh way. All the promotional material was top-notch, and I spent hours at the website exploring and learning about the premise and the back-story, and just kind of absorbing the whole thing. I showed up at the theatre expecting to be genuinely challenged mentally and maybe even morally, and instead, it was just a popcorn flick. If my expectations hadn't been jacked up so high, I probably could've enjoyed the movie, but it just wasn't what I was hoping for. District 9 was our last chance to rescue 2009 from a summer that included Transformers 2, G.I. Joe, and literally the most boring Harry Potter movie I've ever sat through, which is saying something. Instead, the characters were one-dimensional; the plot ended with the premise, and the ending was a WTF? moment for the ages. The violence wound up being pretty good, but in my head, I was screaming at the good guys, "WHY AREN'T YOU KILLING THEM!?" and at the bad guys, "WHY AREN'T YOU RUNNING AWAY?!" The special effects and the general presentation were superbly done and visually stunning, but unfortunately, that's where the creativity stopped. Also, I think that if you lived through the 80's, you pretty much got the Apartheid metaphor directly from the trailers. You can almost go into the movie and take it as given. Instead, you sit there and get hammered over the head with it for an hour and a half. It just made me cringe after awhile. And at the same time, it's the elephant in the room. At a certain point, I was waiting for someone, anyone to stand up and say, "Hey! Remember that one time in South Africa when we used to pretend like blacks weren't real people? This is JUST LIKE THAT. 'Cept with aliens." I guess I just found the whole thing insulting, intellectually, which is the exact opposite of what I was expecting, which is why I was so disappointed. And I'm even more disappointed with moviegoers for not calling the moviemakers out on it. Instead, everybody's fawning all over it, hailing it as unique and original and smart, of all things. It just makes me sad. Expand

The aliens somehow had way better weapons than us, yet they chose to be treated the way they did. When push came to shove, they were violent, so don't give me some explanation about them being docile. This movie was better than a lot of the 2s and 3s being released lately, but they really threw this movie together. I wonder if the producers and directors get to see the entire movie and, after which, can make changes. Perhaps there's no time for it. Once again, I left the theatre feeling bludgeoned to death and a bit starved for a story. The action, once it started, was eardrum-splitting and constant, while the story itself seemed to be based solely on the girth of the special effects budget. The love story between the transforming government worker and his wife was never believable for a moment. It was dull and listless. Also, the end shot of the fully transformed government worker making metal posies to leave on the doorstep of his wife was positively vomit-inducing. The villainy of the father-in-law also strained the realms of credibility. (Really? Not a shred of conflict working within while you sit next to your daughter and lie like a bureaucrat?) I did buy the moment the one government official gave his approval to the mad scientist to start hacking up the transforming government worker - that rang with great clarity. I only wish the mad scientist had gotten to complete the task. That would have been interesting. Overall, the human relations in this movie were not-so-much one dimensional as they were gaseous. On the other hand, the relationship between the father and son alien scored with me. In fact, if it were not for the child alien, this film would have been unwatchable. I loved the premise. Ideologically there was so much to work with, so much to ponder and explore. Unfortunately, with all those guns going off, who had time to think? (Obviously not the screen writers.) The back-story was far more interesting than the plotted present. They should have filmed the back-story. Expand

I'm not a fan of films which are shot in a documentary style, and by far and away the best bits of the film are where it's shot like a normal film. The film treats the aliens and characters in general as far too disposable too - you really do just see them as cannon fodder and often find yourself asking 'why don't we just wipe them out?'. There's also massively implausible and unbelievable parts in the plot, which water the entire experience down too. So what makes it worth a watch? Well it can be quite emotionally intense in the odd bit, and the violence + action is done really well, with a good ending scrap. No real answers are given as to why the aliens or "prawns" came to earth or why Africa was in charge of the situation, or why the aliens didn't use their weapons to kill all of us. For me District 9 is neither a masterpiece or a bad movie, instead it is an interesting but not entirely successful kind of movie.

For a low budget movie, District 9 does look excellent. The cinematography, editing and effects are very, very good, and I did accept the aliens appearance wise. The soundtrack and sound also create a sense of foreboding and genuine atmosphere, the concept is amazing and the film does start off brilliantly. The acting overall by a largely unknown cast is good, as is the direction, and the lead characters are likable.

What didn't impress me so much, is that while District 9 does have heart, that I could see from how it was made and the enthusiasm of the actors and director, I wasn't entirely involved. As I've said, the film starts off with no problem, but the final third with plot points that were either rushed and underdeveloped or silly or clichéd wasn't so good. The story doesn't quite live up to the concept for me, it was intriguing and thoughtfully handled but thin, the support characters aren't as well-thought out or as likable as the leads, the dialogue has some sketchiness that is particularly evident in the slower parts and final third and the pace does get sluggish sometimes.

Overall, I did like it and was intrigued by it, but sorry it isn't a movie I would see again in a hurry. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Don't let the great reviews fool you. This is just an average gorefest. I was very disappointed. I liked the main character but that's about it.

I took a chance on this movie given all the rave reviews. However, I myself thought it was mediocre at best. How could the Washington Post give this movie a 100%!!??? The target audience seemed to be the teenagers around me laughing at all the fake special effects. Many elements of the movie also made no sense logically. One problem was too many thinly veiled references to different ethnic groups that have been persecuted over the years (blacks, immigrants, Jews, etc.). It was as if the aliens were experiencing all these forms of persecution at the same time, regardless of any chronological or historical context. All in all, the movie was not very well made. Also, the second half of the movie conformed to conventional themes and cliches. Expand

Are people really this dumb? This isn't a movie, it's a video game premise, and if they'd actually made a game instead of a film, they could possibly be excused for having just about enough plot to fill a dixie cup before moving on to simply blowing things up and splattering gore across the camera. First off, if you didn't get the fact that this movie is a thinly-veiled allegory for South African apartheid simply from the trailers, then you're either brain-dead, in which case please don't reproduce, or you're 10 years old, in which case please ask your parents about apartheid. Or better yet, Google it, because, by the glowing response this film's had so far, NOBODY REMEMBERS WHAT APARTHEID WAS. I've never had a metaphor so ham-handedly pounded over my head for two hours. Yes, I get it. This is man's capacity for evil and hatred and exploitation through ignorance and xenophobia. Please move on, or do something interesting with it. Instead, we get treated to a parade of 1-dimensional characters ("I just love watching you prawns die!") and joyfully pubescent violence porn. However, even the violence causes massive amounts of cognitive dissonance. If the aliens had these weapons all along, why were the humans able to subjugate them? They've got guns that MAKE PEOPLE EXPLODE. You don't even have to aim particularly well. Instead, the aliens decide to trade those weapons for cans of cat food and dig through trash piles so they can nibble on vulcanized rubber. Secondly, once the aliens (trying to avoid spoilers here, don't ask me why) do decide to unleash their weaponry after 20 years of sneering degradation and oppression, they are remarkably reticent about actually using it. Inside my head, I was constantly screaming, "WHY AREN'T YOU KILLING THEM!!?" The characters were that thin; the humans are SO terrible and the aliens are SO innocent and maltreated that there is absolutely no ambivalence about the idea that the aliens should exterminate every human that has anything to do with MNU, the cartoonishly evil corporation responsible for human/alien relations. Which brings up yet another disconnect; once the alien tech is unleashed, why are the human forces so unfazed by it? I understand that, as a soldier, you need to hang in there and keep fighting even when you start taking losses, but after you see one or two of your teammates explode into a bloody mist after getting hit by an electro-bolt, maybe it's time to start waving the white flag. I dunno...I guess I'm out of steam here. Maybe my expectations were too high. There was a lot of potential here; a good twist on a first contact story, and worthy subject matter to serve as a thematic canvas for that story. Unfortunately, Mr. Blomkamp and his cohorts were apparently more interested in playing a game of HALO. Expand

What could have been a classic of storytelling is reduced to a decent movie compared to this season's other examples of bad summer films, i.e.,Transformers 2. Too bad. Perhaps this is what audiences want; mind numbing audio and video that buries a truly interesting film beneath it. Do yourself a favor and watch the original 6 minute short 'Alive in Joburg' by director Neill Blomkamp and you will see in what direction the longer film should have gone into. The first 30 minutes of 'District 9' is astonishingly good, but then the film degenerates into a mindless entertainment that gives the viewer too much opportunity to think about the plot holes. But of course when the film flies past your eyes at light speed many viewers will forget to ask the important questions. I hope that the Director's Cut DVD will include the missing story. Expand

Sometimes bordering on genius but in the second half of the movie is when they are going completely in the hands and puts us in an action movie American heroics and ending by charging a very interesting project. We must also take into account the gaps in the script are endless. "D-9" is an experience in the film world, it falls well below their potential in the Hollywood factor comes into play. Expand
