This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I actually don't understand why this movie get so negative critic. The movie stars Kevin Bacon as Nick Hume, a business man with a family that he cares about. One day, his oldest son gets killed by a gang member who proves that he is in the gang. The killer walks free (Nick doesn't like that the killer gets a mild sentence, so he don't "recognize" him in court). Nick decides then to kill his oldest son killer. Now he is haunted by the gang. Nick must now protect his family, but to what cost? This movie proves that you can't just be an anti-hero that kills all the bad guys just to rescue/avenge one of your family members and then escape unclean. This movie is depressing and have almost no comedy. The only thing that doesn't fit in the movie is that they parody (?) Taxi Drivers last scene where De Niro shoots everybody. A great scene, but too out of context (it works in Taxi Driver). This is definitely one of the best movies I've seen (I'm a big movie lover so that says a lot).… Expand

While on the surface the film may appear to be a typical revenge flick, like the author of the novel it is loosely based on, it actually shows how revenge doesn't work out. Nick isn't an unlikable guy, he's a devoted father and a greatWhile on the surface the film may appear to be a typical revenge flick, like the author of the novel it is loosely based on, it actually shows how revenge doesn't work out. Nick isn't an unlikable guy, he's a devoted father and a great husband but the loss of his eldest son just causes him to lose it and overlook the safety of his wife and remaining son and seek revenge and that's when things get interesting because it plays into the whole an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind, There are some corny scenes, most of them involve John Goodman. Having him play the abusive father was fine but having him sell the guns to the man who killed his youngest and admitted he'd kill the eldest, it was a bit silly.

But what was truly silly are those who saw the film then complained about the violence when it was made perfectly clear before the film was even out that the director was the same one who directed Saw. Its like seeing a Romero film and then being bothered that there are zombies in it.… Expand

I'm glad I didn't have to pay to see this. The family scenes were so predictable that I fast forwarded through most of them. I do have to say that the action scenes were fun to watch. They were actually quite intense even though I'm glad I didn't have to pay to see this. The family scenes were so predictable that I fast forwarded through most of them. I do have to say that the action scenes were fun to watch. They were actually quite intense even though they made me laugh. I kept wondering why the cops never really interrogated Bacon or arrested him. They had probable cause. I guess it's because he was killing scumbags that the cops couldn't seem to catch, or even seem to want to catch, even after they killed some cops. So, ultimately I would have given it a 1 if it weren't for some of the action scenes.… Expand

Kevin Bacon is just the best revenge dad I've seen to current date. His performance begs to differ in "Death Sentence". Unfortunately, the movie's lethargic script and uninspiring dialogue doesn't.

The critics got it way wrong here. This movie is fantastic. I must have watched it at least 10 times now. The story is a little far fetched, but who cares, its a movie. Never mind the nay sayers. Watch it. Experience the anti hero moments. It's more than good vs evil. It's epitome of human needs, survival and choices.

First of all in response to Kevin, I don't know how you define "acting like a normal human being", but John Goodman's character was definitely the LEAST like it. Think about it: not only did he allow the man trying to kill his son First of all in response to Kevin, I don't know how you define "acting like a normal human being", but John Goodman's character was definitely the LEAST like it. Think about it: not only did he allow the man trying to kill his son leave, but he sold him the guns to do it!! And as for the cop showing no sympathy, Bacon's character is wanted for murder, not to mention the fact that cops probably see tearjerker stories like that more often than not. This was an incredible film that went way beyond the revenge-killing cliche by showing much deeper insight into the emotional rollercoaster that Bacon's character had to go through. As for Roy P., how can you say he uses the same look in every scene? Up until Bacon escapes from hospital, he flexes his acting range from shock to fear to determination to anguish to anger, finally ending up with the look of someone who has lost the fear of death and knows he has one purpose left. Put yourself in the character's position. How in God's name would you know what you would do in those situations, what you would be capable of. I guess this is just one of those movies like History of Violence or Eastern Promises where you either love it or you hate it.… Expand

Director James Wan made a name for himself with the low-budget hit "Saw." However, it wasn't until the 2010-2013 era of his career that he reached true mainstream appeal and established himself as one of the biggest names in modern horrorDirector James Wan made a name for himself with the low-budget hit "Saw." However, it wasn't until the 2010-2013 era of his career that he reached true mainstream appeal and established himself as one of the biggest names in modern horror with the like of Insidious and The Conjuring. Since then has branched to even bigger and better things by placed at the helm of big-budget action films, such as entry in the Fast & Furious series and the upcoming Aquaman. Before all of that though, there was a period following his work on Saw where he made some movies that arguably aren't among the most noteworthy of his work. Death Sentence is one of them.

It's a pretty standard revenge flick. Mild-mannered "Nick Hume" (Kevin Bacon) sets out for revenge on the gangsters who killed his son. A compelling idea, but the movie ultimately suffers from overly-emotional melodrama that misses the mark by being too cheesy. The soundtrack is embarrassingly bad and the acting is subpar across the board. Bacon manages to show off a few good moments of genuine despair, but really the only people worth watching onscreen are John Goodman in a particularly humorous role and Edi Gathegi, the only gangster who can act. This sort of thing isn't helped by the surprisingly amateurish direction from Wan in any scene other than the action ones, where he does manage to show of some clever camera angles and fun, gory kills. The visuals try to go for a more artistic approach with grainy visuals, but instead the whole thing just looks like it was shot on a handheld. Once the action really starts going there is some fun to be had. Provided you can really suspend your disbelief that is. These are some of the least-threatening gangsters ever portrayed onscreen. Right from the get go they are constantly outsmarted and over-powered by out everyday, briefcase-toting protagonist who despite likely never having been in a fight in his life, has the moves of an action hero when the bullets start flying. It's ridiculous to the extreme. Now, Death Sentence isn't necessarily bad. Or at least not in this reviewer's opinion. It's not an entirely well-executed film. There are moments where it's got something going for it. Unfortunately, it's never a brain. As a result what we are left with is a very talented director's weakest film (at least so far). If you're a James Wan superfan like myself, this is worth watching just for the history lesson on the man's career. Longtime of fans of the Death Wish series might also get a kick out of this, as it's based on the book that serves as a sequel to the first Death Wish. For everyone else this is worthy of a skip. A weak and largely idiotic revenge action-thriller with only a handful of truly good moments.… Expand

I felt absolutely no emotion with any of these characters. In this sort of film, you need to have some sort of connection to really feel the pain and suffering caused and Bacon himself can't even save it. Yeah, the action is alright but if II felt absolutely no emotion with any of these characters. This is one of my favorite movies, I guess I just have bad taste, because almost all of my favorite movies are rated at the worst with metacritic.
