A strong character piece filled with developed and visually distinct characters in this police-less gangland. The romance is genuine and the acting is to a tea. Everyone succeeds in their prospective roles interestingly and with panache.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was done an injustice by critics, I found the movie highly emotional, dynamic and intelligent. I felt the scars on my face when Beatrice looked at them in the mirror and when she ran her fingers down her reconstructed face, I felt victor's pain when he mailed the picture squares and watched the home videos. The movie had a lot of plot twist and dramatic moments that were not predictable in the slightest. Great movie, would have gotten a 10 if not for the a few minor things. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie left a mark in my "mémoire"

I really enjoyed this movie.

If True Romance is one of your top movies, you will experience nice flashbacks.

My two favorite things are the Soundtrack (specifically Zaz - Eblouie Par La Nuit) and the wonderfully Script played by both Noomi Rapace and Collin Farrell. The connection between their dark characters takes you to an almost impossible final climax.

The movie successfully proves that, in fact, "Even the most damaged heart can be mended".

Congrats to the cast & crew!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very good mix of action, suspense and drama !!!!!

I am a real fan of Colin Farrell and also like Dominic Cooper, and Terrence Howard as actors. Colin is not my favorite actor of all, but surely he is a top one for me. The trailer of the movie really attracted me. I have not seen anything else directed by this director, but he did a spot on job with this commercial thriller. It is not the best movie in which Colin Farrell has acted, but it is noteworthy. The director did a refined job mixing 5 main genres in one thriller: action, thriller, drama mystery & romance. The atmosphere is intense and adequate. It shows a humid, cloudy, dark New York. I meant the photography was gritty because it had to be like this taking into account the movie's story. The melding of the story and surprises is perfect but the main defect from the movie is its irregularities in the pace. They are not serious at all, but here and there, it is too low. It does not matter because it is not a strictly-action film. The action scenes are very well done. They are realistic, but not frequent. Violence and blood is present in the movie. The story is about revenge (a very frequent issue in movies), which is not new, however the plot has a few twists, characters and scenarios that make this a very entertaining and tense film. One of the strengths is the cast and their emotive performances. They all did a stellar job, especially Colin, the lead actor. He played the part of a simple inmigrant who seeks revenge from the ones who killed his wife and daughter. Noomi Rapace is his sentimental partner, with a deep performance, as well, as a tormented woman. Dominic Cooper is the "best friend". He delivers a more than accurate performance. Terrence Howard is the boss of the criminal syndicate responsible for the murders of the protagonist's wife and daughter. I think I had never seen Howard play the part of a devious character. In this film, he did an authentic portrayal of a bottom feeding criminal. Another strong point is the character development. This is supported by these amazing performances. As it is not a purely action film, the character development is relevant. We know what motivates every vital character very well. In conclusion, despite its irregularities in terms of pace, the movie is tense and entertaining. These irregularities are partially due to the mix of genres. Farrell, the character development and the action are the best elements (apart from something I will not explain that occurs almost at the end). I recommend this to those who like action thrillers and any of the actor's fans.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fantastic performances all around. Neo-Noir

In New York City, a crime lord's right-hand man is helped by a woman seeking retribution. Double Dose of Revenge An intelligent thriller that takes its time dishing out retribution. This slick and stylish thriller marked the American theatrical debut of Niels Arden Oplev, director of the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace star as two strangers who are irresistibly drawn to one another by their mutual desire for revenge. The acting is excellent . American Neo-Noir meets romantic European fable .The movie is, first and foremost, a revenge thriller. But surprisingly, it is also a compelling love story. This film has the pacing and build like an old crime film, complete with dramatic emotionally spilling performances down to its very ending note. The dialog and characters are so fascinating that when the violence begins occurring you generally care about them. This film is an original Neo Noir and a complex brooding character piece strung together with the dazzling imagery of humanity. The kind of film that has become a rarity at the box office. Fantastic performances all around.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some Oscar Performances Help this Thriller.

Victor (Colin Farrell) is a trusted member for Crime Boss, Alphonse (Terrance Howard), and has plans to kill him because Alphonse ordered the Albanians to kill him and his family. He survived the hit and is working under an assumed name. Victor meets Beatrice (Noomi Rapace) who has video evidence of him killing someone in his apartment. She won't go to the police if Victor kills the man who caused the accident she was in and disfigured her face and she feels she cannot function in ordinary living. What to do? What to do?

There are other subplots within but the above is all you really need to know. Seems the Colin Farrell movies get more complicated as we grow older. This one takes a while to introduce all the subplots but this is a good thing because the needed tension builds slowly and Alphonse needs the time to figure out the puzzle of who is killing off his men. This is extremely well paced.

We have more than a run-of-the –mill thriller because the acting performances of both Colin Farrell and Noomi Napace are Oscar worthy. They are perfect in their respective roles. Their ever-slow love inroads are quite captivating, innocent and actually quite real, and they don't quite trust each other. Yet. Kudos.

A mistake (here we go) was the casting of Terrance Howard as the bad guy, Alphonse. Terrance Howard – with that golden voice -- cannot play a bad guy to anyone's satisfaction (yours, I suppose). He is a good guy and nothing will turn him into something bad. Just won't happen. Hell, I liked him in here. He wasn't mean, tough or cruel as a crime boss would likely be. Leave Mr. Howard alone.

I was thoroughly impressed with Beatrice's mother, Valentine, played by Isabelle Huppert. With an engaging smile, she was given great lines as the perfect supportive /nurturing mother. She was a breath of fresh air, and it doesn't hurt that she is also very pretty. She is also Oscar worthy. (ah, I think I know you now)

One of the best exchanges in here is with Darcy (Dominic Cooper) - a fellow gang member - when he asks Victor: the reason you didn't kill me is because I have a wife and kids? Victor replies: no, because they have you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dead Man Down is more alive than you could possibly imagine.

Out of all the films I had the privilege of viewing in 2013, Dead Man Down would have to be my all favorite of 2013. Every sentence is perfectly crafted and fits in beautifully with the movie; the acting is so realistic, you can almost reach out and literally touch the characters; and the storyline is so convincingly outstanding you cannot help but stare transfixed for the entirety of this masterpiece.

What is quite fascinating with the feature is the premise; the film begins several months into the story, and over the course of the first twenty five minutes, we, the audience, play catch-up, a technique which fabulously works.

The beginning lines by Dominic Cooper help pave the way for this tale of retribution, revenge and romance. Victor (Colin Farrell) is a man who works for renown crime boss Alphonse (Terrence Howard), however, at the same time, he has his own agenda, which is quickly revealed. His life takes an unforeseen turn when he is introduced to Beatrice (Noomi Rapace), a young woman, with half her face corrupted by scars. Despite this, Ms. Rapace looks as gorgeous as ever, and the accent she uses, alongside her use of facial expression, is terrifically performed.

Forcing Victor into a corner, she intends to use him as a tool for vengeance, in order to punish the man whose car tore apart her life. During the film, Gregor (F. Murray Abraham), with a fantastic accent, and Beatrice's mother (Isabelle Huppert) help the two leading characters reconcile the lives they have in order to efficaciously move on. At the same time however, Alphonse is on the prowl, and like a box of matches, the fiery performance by Mr. Howard is extraordinary in the scenes he shares with Mr. Farrell.

The use of emotion, achieved through the exploration of characters and their backgrounds, make these individuals so exceptionally likable, and even the villains, you will simply love to hate. Focusing more on the building of tension rather than continued action sequences, a technique established through not just the atmosphere, but the environment itself, Dead Man Down moves at an intelligently steady gait until the final triumphant sequence, not one part of the film feeling as though it were unnecessarily rushed. Luis Da Silva Jr. as Terry and Stu Bennet as Kilroy also deserve a mention, and despite their small roles, they add an additional flavor to an already superb mix of characters.

I could not help but watch this film every night after first purchasing the title, and now, without further ado, by all means, go out and have yourself a blast; Dead Man Down is sure to not disappoint

The film follows Victor (Colin Farrell), a local kingpins right hand man who is planning revenge against the men who killed his family. However when Beatrice (Noomi Rapace), his neighbour witnesses him murder someone in his apartment he is forced to do something for her that may mean his downfall or his salvation. There is no nice way to say it, this is a bad movie, it lacks believable characters, a decent draw and a reason to root for the central character, in fact for the first 30 minutes he just murders people with no justification behind it just because they have guns (because that's a reason to kill anyone in action films apparently). Now Colin Farrell isn't a bad actor, in fact he's quite a good one but he needs the right material and the script in Dead Man Down is just confusing. It's filled with nonsense twists that just make its two leads seem like schizophrenics as it supposedly builds to a tepid finale filled with fake emotions and ridiculously overworked messages that are so heavy-handed it just annoys you. It's filled with uninvolving resolutions and one of the dumbest final conversations in movie history. Rapace has to cope with the worst of it as her character flip flops around unsure on what she is doing, so much so that in one scene she is hitting on Victor and then suddenly she starts yelling at him for no reason, none whatsoever. It's not just a poor script though, its so poorly filmed and packaged it doesn't even qualify as an action film because those scenes are dull and unimpressive. It;s a poor picture unworthy of its two leads. Expand

The worst part would be the done to death revenge story the male character is planning. But the rest are good things: great acting, both Colin Farrel and Noomi Rapace show commitment and deliver what we expect from them. Both have a really great career at this point. Noomi is particularly fascinating to watch in any role she takes. The thing I´ve seen people hating on the most is the pace, and I have to say I didn´t have a problem at all with it, perfect to me. At the end you also get big action scenes, so that should make action lovers happy too. Good film. One of the few cases it is better than what you expected. Expand

That's usually my response when I see the WWE logo during a film trailer. This film however is nothing like any film that has come out of that studio. Dead Man Down is smart, WAY smarter than I thought it was going to be. I decided to take chance and catch the midnight premier of this film because of the Cast, I just had this feeling that Noomi Rapace wouldn't take an awful roll. I was right. The pace is fantastic, It's not a full throttle action film. The action is placed perfectly between good character development and pleasing dialog. Noomi Rapace is BRILLIANT. After seeing her in Prometheus and Dead Man Down, I can confidently say she's one of my favorite actresses. She captures emotion like no other. Something about her performances just captivate you. My one complaint would be that I wanted better, cleaner kill shots. The violence is kind of Teen Rated video game like, Not that it doesn't work, Like i said the action is just right, but the execution is a little off. Being an action film fan maybe I'm spoiled by such violence in the Expendables and Django. Bottom line, This movie is a hell of a lot smarter than the critics are saying it is. If you want a film that keeps you entertained in all the right ways, give it a shot! It may have you leaving thinking the same thing that was in my head: That was a WWE Film?!" Expand

There are two reasonsColin Farrell certainly knows how to pick good projects as he's done so since 2009. I've enjoyed the last seven of his movies including this rather interesting gangster flick with the talented Noomi Rapace co- starring. There are two reasons for me seeing this Niels Arden Oplev film because he directed Noomi in the well known 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' then there is the fact that he's in production on a Stephen King film 'Under The Dome' and being a 'King' fan I was keen to see how it might be handled. The Dane is definitely one of the better directors out there and done a great job on 'Dead Man Down'. It certainly had a strong eastern European look and feel which made for a tight, gritty action laden thriller that had me enjoying every minute.

The bottom line is, well acted and directed, the writing was great with enough depth to keep it interesting and exciting with the overall production rounding it off nicely. A solid action/thriller. Highly Recommended Score: 7.4/10

Inflating scores like this is embarrassing and plain wrong. If a movie isn't good, it isn't good.

Back to the movie itself, there wasn't much substance to it. The characters were bland, it was overly fast paced, gratuitously violent, like a c rated mr and mrs smith with more gore and less relationship appeal. The motivations behind the characters were not compelling. Not good cinema.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Superb Vendetta Fare!

Niels Arden Oplev's 'Dead Man Down' offers a solid punch. A Superb Vendetta Fare, that benefits from a Gripping Screenplay, Excellent Direction & Strong Performances.

'Dead Man Down' Synopsis: In New York City, a crime lord's right-hand man is seduced by a woman seeking retribution.

'Dead Man Down' is a tale very-well done. J.H. Wyman's Screenplay is gripping, offering interesting & grasping moments all through. Despite the excessive violence, this rather under-rated flick leaves a terrific impact. I was glued & engrossed throughout. Niels Arden Oplev's Direction is excellent. Cinematography, Editing & Art Design are good. Make-Up & Action-Sequences are flawless.

Performance-Wise: The Extremely Attractive Noomi Rapace delivers a stellar performance as a disturbed & vengeful soul. She expresses pain, anger & love all through her beautiful eyes & note-worthy dialogue delivery. Colin Farrell is equally superior. Dominic Cooper is highly competent. He shines in a strong supporting role. Terrence Howard shows a menacing side of his in here, while Isabelle Huppert brings depth to her character. F. Murray Abraham is sincere, as always.

On the whole, 'Dead Man Down' is a winner all the way.
