Perhaps my interest in this film is my passion about the history of the primates from the first film in many years ago, where even was in the testicles of my dad.

Let's talk about the film, the first thing that I have that I have to praise are the special effects, give it personality, attitude, real expressions that make you feel desperation, hatred, love...

Sound, soundtrack, mounting, nominations please. In the end tremendous highly recommended movie.

To me this is the best CGI I have seen to date by far. To be drawn into a world and of rich characters that barely talk and have few expressions is quite something. This will not be everyones cup of tea I am sure but if enjoyed the first you will not be disappointed. The relaunch of the franchise is the most successful in history, far outdoing the originals and sketchy Marky Mark remake. It manages to make the premise seem real. Can't wait for the next film. An emotionally heavy and truly moving film, Dawn is an absolute marvel of modern science fiction, building upon the strong and unmovable foundations Rise of the Planet of the Apes had left earlier. With a plethora of solid characters from both ends of the tale, an explosive sequence of events and a rather poetic script, Dawn raises the bar for the Planet of the Apes franchise and other big-budget philosophical productions of it's caliber. Dawn really is something that deserves appreciation; few films in our day can only dream of achieving what Dawn has. A film that truly touches it's audience with heartfelt passion and remorse for humanity, Dawn is the kind of film that films as an art form and the film industry needs in general.

Both Rise and Dawn are thought provoking; films that challenge our perception of our very own species through another. However, Dawn triumphs more spectacularly in a way few films before it had done so; through unsolicited and unforced emotion and depth that makes Dawn a true modern science fiction classic, something that the original creators of Planet of the Apes would be very proud of.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After seeing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes I was truly stunned. Everything in this film is incredible. From the motion capture acting by Andy Serkis to the wonderful special effects this movie is a fulfilling and rewarding. Beginning ten years after Rise of the Planet of the Apes the ape leader Ceaser tries to maintain peace between the few human survivors of the Simian Flu and his tribe of apes. However, the peace is destroyed when Koba an ape who hates humans kills Ceaser and blames the humans. However, Ceaser is still alive and it is now up to him to take back his kingdom all while Koba and the apes are attacking the humans. Before the film came out I did not know what to think. However, I was surprised by the emotional level of the film and how you could really see the emotion on the faces of all the apes. Motion capture changed this film franchise for the better. Also the script is amazing as it really has a large level of depth to it. Now I come to the acting. Jason Clarke who portrays Malcom a human is wonderful and gives a level of emotion to his character. Andy Serkis however playing Ceaser steals the show as he rightfully should. His character is so complex and he portrays him perfectly. In conclusion this film is a nearly perfect work of science fiction and will be remembered for years to come. Expand

To be honest after the initial wow factor you completely forget that the apes aren't really actors. They look fantastic in the different weather scenarios. Only when you see an animated bear and an animated monkey do you feel like you are watching some moving pixels. The story itself is extremely gripping, an emotional roller-coaster which could be deemed a little predictable but at the same time has enough about it in terms of imagery and great directing to get away with any obvious twists or turns. A wonderful movie which might be hard to top in the next instalment. Expand

Their are many other important points to add, but to the point, Dawn Of The Planet of the Apes is a Spectacular squeal that will go down as one of the greatest science fiction films of the 21st century.

That was until the Fox executives got their hands into the project and turned it into a virtual home movie and pilot for a failed TV series. It took 40 years but we finally have that great battle movie in our hands. The actors playing apes do an excellent job and you never once wonder if they are real or not you are just immersed in the film. The action and plot have many twists and turns and keeps you interested for the full duration of the film. I really love what these new movies do for the franchise giving it the credibility that the continuing 70's sequels could never give. Expand

What an amazing film! The visuals were FANTASTIC, the characters were well realized, especially the apes, and the story is for the most part unpredictable and takes some not so heavy twists and turns that still present a strong effect on the movie itself. There are really no plain and simple, black and white characters. As for the main characters (Caesar, Koba, Malcom and his family, even Dreyfus) present such three dimensional characters. Even for the supporting characters, they don't fully present three dimensional characters, but more of representations of different themes of characters that were used to see in movies. For example, you have a character that despises Apes for everything that's happened to the world when really he's afraid of this new world. Essentially, all the characters serve a purposeful role, three dimensional or not. In the end, it's a beautifully dark and exciting installment filled with beautiful cinematography, set pieces and fascinating characters (mainly Caesar and Koba). Overall, it's one of the greatest sequels of all time! I give this masterpiece an A+! Expand

This was one of the most awesome, thoughtful and enjoyable movie of the year. Many critics have bashed it for being a bit clichéd or because of other reasons but I have to say that I loved the movie. I watched it in 3D because the town there I live in was no option other than 3d so I watched it in 3d.I thought was going to be dead for me already because for what I know from my experiences 3D is just a way to gain more money at the box office by offering the viewers a device to watch the film thats gonna ruin the experience. Luckily it didnt happen with this one. I am glad it didnt and I am actually happy, kind of,that it screened in 3d because the 3d enhanced the feeling for this movie. The 3d format was vivid and it actually add to the involvement of the story. Talking about the story. The story was really really good and I am surprised to say this because I didnt expect this movie to impress, surprise and entertain me so much. The key elements like the action, the pacing and story were done really well. What I found most interesting was the character development. Every character was treated so well I thought I was dreaming because you dont expect this from a summer movie. This summer movie though, for me, I felt it was done with passion and dedication. It is a great movie and it is one of the year's best ones. Expand

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes does improve on itsRise of the Planet of the Apes was a pleasant surprise and hinted at a new era for the Planet of the Apes franchise. The sequel to that movie is here, and has it improved on its predecessor? Dawn of the Planet of the Apes does improve on its predecessor, but also packs in so much more that it makes me more than excited for sequels to this franchise. Let's start talking about the story. The main plot here is that most of mankind has been wiped out by the brutal Simian flu. However, there is still a large group of survivors in San Francisco, and they need fuel and power. A very small group of survivors start heading to the dam, but they come across the apes. The story gets so much deeper, and also offers many plot twists that were constantly amazing. The human characters here truly aren't the real shining stars, but they still offer things to the table. I cared about the main family and the other characters. The main character, which is also the father of the main family (Jason Clarke), was very, very good, and I loved seeing him interacting and talking with Caesar and his fellow apes. Speaking of Caesar and the apes, Andy Serkis here might just have performed the best motion capture performance ever as Caesar. One of the other main apes, Koba, is a true menace, but he never came off as generic. There's also a good amount of depth to him, too. Gary Oldman is basically known as the one who keeps control over the people. He doesn't like the apes at all, but he never came off like a cruel jerk, even though there wasn't an insane amount of depth to him. With the characters and story, Dawn offers so much emotional depth that is extremely smart and gripping. Have I forgot to talk about the CGI? It is simply outstanding. The apes look real. I know real is used a lot when talking about CGI, but I couldn't believe how amazed I was by how detailed the apes were. The action here becomes intense and amazing. I don't know about you, but I'd choose seeing apes riding horseback with dual-wield LMGs jumping over fire over anything this summer. While I won't spoil it here, the ending here is powerful. There was just one slight problem with it. It is that I thought the actual war between the apes and humans was left annoyingly hanging. Then again, it sets up for a sequel, and that's something I want more than anything in movies right now: a sequel to this phenomenal movie. Not only will Dawn of the Planet of the Apes be one of my favorite summer movies this year, it will be in my Top 5 out of 2014 for sure. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expands greatly upon the first in several ways I didn't expect. Film makers have done such a great job of humanizing the apes in this film that you can emotionally connect to them so well, especially between caesar and his family. The story was very thought provoking regarding civil war and societal issues. Not sure best way to describe it, but it was very satisfying. Expand

The movie has some truly powerful moments that hit home. You will be on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next, because there's never a dull moment in this movie. Human or ape, the characters in the movie all have their own motivations that if you look at things from their point of view, you could justify almost all of their actions. Needless to say, the apes have evolved since the previous film and are now a tribal community led by Caesar who's teaching his son how to lead the apes when the time comes. The movie is intense and you'll walk out of the theater feeling glad that you went to go see it. If you have the choice, choose the 3D as the 3D is amazing and wonderfully utilized in this film. If you liked Rise, then you'll love Dawn. It builds upon what Rise established and raises the bar for its eventual sequel. This is certainly a Summer movie must-see. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A must see movie. The movie takes place 10 years after the Simian flu has wiped out most of the human race and the apes are very intelligent. We follow Cesar (Casear? I don't know how to spell it) who we also followed in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. He has started a community of apes in the mountains just beyond San Fransisco. A small of group of humans encounter them and want their permission to use the dam nearby to re-power their community downtown which is almost out of gas for their generators. Cesar lets them do their work and there is finally peace and trust after Cesar's wife is cured from her sickness. That is until Koba, an ape that has pure hatred towards the humans, shoots Cesar and gets more apes to burn down their community. He blames the humans on the attack and death of Cesar and tells them to go to war with the humans. They all go downtown and an intense battle ensues. The group from earlier that escaped the burning community find Cesar almost dead on the ground and take him back to his old house that we saw in Dawn and he gets fixed. His son, Blue Eyes (I think) frees the humans and captive apes downtown and Cesar takes down Koba and they all wait as war approaches from another city. (I didn't add all details fyi) Expand

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes place ten years after the first and much has changed. Caesar(played by Andy Serkis) returns as the ape leader in an even better performance than the original with the support of his returning ape friendsDawn of the Planet of the Apes takes place ten years after the first and much has changed. Caesar(played by Andy Serkis) returns as the ape leader in an even better performance than the original with the support of his returning ape friends Maurice and Koba. Caesar now has a family, including his rebellious son Blue Eyes, his wife, and newborn son. Caesar’s companion, Will Rodman(played by James Franco) has died, which introduces the new cast. Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, and many more amazing new characters that are trying to survive in the rundown city of San Francisco. The Apes are growing in numbers and strength, while the majority of humans are either dead from the simian flu or each other. Caesar is now in charge of the apes and only wants what’s best for his kind, but Koba, Caesar’s right hand man, has other ideas. When the humans and apes try to work together Koba ruins every chance for peace through violence. A war between apes and humans is inevitable and nothing can stop what is to come, not even Caesar.
This movie hits in all the right places. The visuals are astounding. The contrast from the lush green forests and the dilapidated San Francisco makes for a great setting, and the way it’s filmed cannot be understated. The way in which the intense battle sequences are filmed, set this movie apart from every other action blockbuster. In one sequence the camera is rotated an entire 360 degrees revealing the destruction of humans and apes at war, which makes for the most dramatic scene in the entire movie. The CGI integration is seamless, especially when so many apes appear at once alongside humans. The loss of James Franco doesn’t even phase this cast, every character has a purpose and it shows on-screen. The beautiful script is heard not only with the human cast, but the apes too. They speak less, but do when necessary, and it is breathtaking just as it was in the first film.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes surpasses it’s predecessor, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, in every way. The characters, the cinematography, and plot are all impressively intriguing. This is the best blockbuster of the year, and great fun for the entire family. The only downfall is that this movie isn’t an IMAX 3D Experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Review
On July 11, 2014, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was released at the American box office as well as other large markets. The film was released three years after it’s predecessor, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, a film another critically acclaimed film in the franchise. Dawn follows a story about a tribe-like group of apes, lead by Cesar, that find themselves into conflict with a nearby city of human survivors of the Simian flu that’s killed a vast majority of the world population. Over the course of the movie, boundaries are broken by greedy, backstabbing members of both communities that leads to death infused war. The film was directed by Matt Reeves and marks as one of his career highlights as a director. The film stands strong with a Rotten Tomatoes score of a whopping 90% and went on to make over 700 million dollars at the box office over the course of its run. The film proved as a powerhouse through its amazing visuals, plot, pace, and perfect balance of action and character development.
In today’s technologically advanced world, computer graphics are at an all-time high in quality and film studios need to make sure they’ve carefully crafted realistic visuals; furthermore, Dawn of the Apes produced some of the best CGI seen in recent years. Through the work of specialists and computer graphic designers, the film beautifully rendered humans into realistic apes. Once watching the film, the graphics mesmerize one to the point that one would have to question if the apes in the film are in fact real. That’s one factor that could make or break a film; A film with tragic graphics vs. one with life-like graphics. This film certainly exceeded expectations in that department. From beginning to end, the graphics represented just how much work the graphic designers had to pull through. From explosions, guns, and war action to the green scenery of the woods and other settings, the graphics in the film are bound to catch any viewer’s attention.
At a time where many large-scale films suffer from weak plots, the screen writers wrote a script that not only worked, but had movie-goers (myself included) at the edge of their seats until the very end. The world’s lived through over a century of cinema and at times many storylines feel exhausted as they've been recycled over and over. Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver really pulled through with a dynamic memorable script that’s seems fresh in a world full of recycled, overplayed scripts. The screenwriters here captured a storyline with a twist, although formed from a reboot, it seemed quite refreshing. The plot follows a group of survivors in a world where the simian flu has wiped out a large number of mankind; they find their way towards the woods where Cesar (Andy Serkis) leads his tribe of apes in a new way of life. The way they eventually collide with one another is one for the record books. While sitting through this movie, one doesn't really know what’s coming next. That’s the beauty of well written script; People are left on an adventure not knowing what’s going to hit them.
Not only does the film encompass a well-crafted script and outstanding visuals, it captures a organic flow that most movies seem to suffer from nowadays: pace. Pacing can be just as important in a film; It’s what leaves audiences feeling empty as the story rushes through each plot-line or at ease with a natural-like flow. A movie’s pace should never feel rushed and it should never feel like it drags on either. Another factor that the crew nailed on the spot! Not once does the movie feel rushed. Even through the all the twists and turns the motion picture takes, the pacing of the plot flows in a way a film should: organically. Dawn of the Apes finds itself steering steadily into different scenes with different characters at a comfortable pace.
Movies are prone to suffer from an imbalance of substance and style, character/plot development and action. With the work of talented editors and producers, this film fell nowhere near as a victim to that issue. While watching the film unfold, the action never felt forced and it certainly never felt overexposed. There was always a purpose behind it. That’s extremely crucial when filmmakers sometimes try to please the audience with their style rather than their substance. Directors like Michael Bay regularly put their visual effects to extensive use. Visual effects contribute to a great film, but they sometimes try to overcompensate when a story lacks substance. It’s clear here that the talented crew had no issues in being able to capture the beauty of both. With a perfect balance of substance and style, Matt Reeves found himself directing a beautifully written scrip along with visuals that embodied a unique aesthetically pleasing style.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a hefty title but it brings more to the table than a majority of box office hits nowadays.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the pinnacle of the Planet of the Apes series. It contains all of the best elements from each film from the political undertones to the stunning special effects to outstanding action set pieces to strongDawn of the Planet of the Apes is the pinnacle of the Planet of the Apes series. It contains all of the best elements from each film from the political undertones to the stunning special effects to outstanding action set pieces to strong likeable characters and a thrilling plot with Shakespearean ambitions.

Ten years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes a deadly virus has ravaged human civilization wiping out large parts of humanity. The evolved apes are now living in woods in San Francisco, led by Caesar, who now has his own son Blue Eyes. There is hostility after they stumble across a group of humans on their land but it’s revealed that the humans don’t want trouble, they are only looking to repair a hydroelectric dam to restore power to their city for the survivors. Caesar let’s them work on repairing the dam but his lieutenant Koba doesn’t trust humans and wants a war against mankind.

There was scepticism towards this sequel as the director Rupert Wyatt had left the project and main actor James Franco wouldn’t be returning. “Cloverfield” director Matt Reeves was hired to take over the film. Although the director had changed, the sequel was similar in tone and style while also successful building on the lore and character development from the original.

The characters of Caesar and Koba, and their relationship, is dead-centre in this story. Caesar’s character is more full and developed as he becomes more intelligent and interesting. The side story with his partner and son also gives him more depth and relatability. Koba’s character actually goes through the largest character arc. From having a small role in Rise, the seeds were planted when you see him being tested on and tortured by humans. But in Dawn he becomes more vengeful towards mankind and actually has a highly emotional scene pointing out his facial scars to Caesar and declaring it was “Human work!”.

The visuals and special effects are both striking with Matt Reeves having a great eye for impactful imagery. The fortress the apes live in is a sight to behold and looks like something out of a Kurosawa film. The motion capture special effects have also been improved with the apes looking more realistic than ever, the scenes with the apes interacting with each other are seamless. The special effects are arguably some of the best use of CGI ever created.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was proof that audiences still liked intelligent blockbusters. Beating the box-office of its predecessor while also receiving more favourable reviews from film critics. With a thoughtful story, full of extremely powerful moments and backed by great characters, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes eclipsed the idea of a ‘Summer-Blockbuster’.

It showed how the world can definitely collapse from something terrible just simply by the civil unrest an epidemic can cause. It was also an interesting new perspective on that stereotypical post-apocalyptic world. One interesting thing I noticed is that you have two characters for each type of person equaling 4 of them total in this assessment.

Koba(Ape) and Dreyfus want nothing but war, Koba is a bit more extreme as he is more primal but Dreyfus definitely didn't want to have peace either.

And then you had Caesar(Ape) and Malcolm, both of them could see the good in everyone and always wanted to resolve issues instead of instigating them.

This was just one small thing I noticed. There's a lot to take away from this movie, I understand that assessment of the characters might seem shallow when written out but that's because I want to avoid spoilers, it's much more in depth in the movie. GO WATCH IT!

It does a good job in picking up from the previous movie and sets itself up for the next movie. This movie should appeal to except maybe for those who cannot get passed the idea of apes talking, which is a shame. This series seems to be picking up a good following and justifiably so. Expand

When you leave the theater you can't help but think that if everyone can reason with one another war is not inevitable. Unfortunately, all it takes is one rotten apple in this case KOBA to start a war. With DAWN the APE franchise is reborn. Can't wait to see where it takes us next. Charlton Heston would be proud. The origin story continues to progress. The balance of relative peace between apes and humans balances on the edge of a knife. Things like political maneuvers show us just how much these apes have grown in intelligence.

The film doesn't shy away from it's moral center. This time around the apes aren't completely victims. Caesar is coming to the realization that the apes are no longer that different from the humans they once fought. There is some truly powerful stuff going on here.

The origin of the new Planet of the Ape series continues to show brilliance. This time the human performances are all up to the task. The motion capture is just as fantastic as ever. The apes still look like animals with human intelligence. The future of the series looks bright.

"Dawn" is a powerful movie. One with enough action and heart to enchant all audiences. The beauty and horror of it's post-apocalyptic needs to be seen.

I give "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" a 9.8/10.

I was really looking forward to seeing it, and for the most part I thought it was a great film. The writing was good, the acting was fantastic. It's amazing that we've reached a point with CGI where you totally empathise with and even shed some tears over some computer generated characters, but that's how I felt watching Caeser and the other apes. They certainly were the stars of the movie, with the human characters taking a back seat - but we wouldn't want it any other way. That said, some of the scenes when humans and the apes were connecting on a deeper level and building trust with each other were some of the strongest in the whole film. I think it's an allegory for the connection we need to make with animals and the environment - one that we have lost over the past few centuries. Some parts of the film I felt were a bit cliche and predictable though so that's why I'm giving it a 9. But overall it was engrossing and wonderful to watch. And my dad didn't fall asleep! Which is saying something in itself. I look forward to the next film. I just love science-fiction! Expand

Some movies, like 22 Jump Street and X-Men stood out to be great films, but some have been poor. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is not only a great film, but a masterpiece that far exceeds all of its predecessors, from the original film to the good prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is flawless in every way possible, from the plot to the CGI. The acting was generally solid, but nothing too special. However, Serkis is unbelievably good as Caesar once again and Toby Kebbell is even better as Koba. The plot created by Matt Reeves and co. is action packed, smart, emotional, and, in general, beautiful (for the lack of a better word). However, the apes were the stars of the show. Caesar, Maurice, Blue Eyes, and especially Koba were all great and each took on significant roles in the film. Lastly, the CGI. The effects in this film are the best I've possibly ever seen in a film. It was so realistic you would think the ape actors were in costumes. In general, this film is a must see this summer and easily turned an OK movie summer to a great one. This movie will make your summer. Expand

Pure awesomeness. Believe me, this movie is everything you want from a good science fiction action movie, especially the battle scenes. And the CGI was stunning. Trust me, you want to see this movie.

Therefore, it is with unreserved enthusiasm that I can recommend whole heartedly this latest chapter in the simian saga. The whole package just couldn't have been put together better, but it has to be said that a lion's share of the credit has to go to director Matt Reeves who previously thrilled us with his visually stunning and equally dark 'Cloverfield'. Helped by a surprisingly dense and impressive screenplay he has managed to inject in to familiar proceedings, depth of character, excitement, pathos and suspense and yet has still found time to inventively position the camera to jaw dropping effect. There is even some slow motion, 360 degree camera pans and knock out crane shots. In fact we have everything here but the kitchen sink and it all works beautifully. The story is good and there is definite deliberation in the pacing which is perfectly judged and balances the action sequences with the many quieter and more reflective moments.

Technically the movie is everything that you would expect.. The cinematography is dark but luminous. The production design and visual effects are state of the art brilliant and the music gives the film its menacing undercurrent which is underlined by some of the best sound work for ages. Jason Clarke also demonstrates why he deserves to be given leading roles along with the best of them. To call this the best ape film yet is a pretty empty compliment. More importantly it is an estimable achievement in its own right.

These are the blockbusters with depth that are often missing in our big screens. The first part "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was surprisingly good, when nobody seemed to care after the disaster of a movie that Tim Burton created years ago. It was emotional and beautiful. Now, this second part of the new reboot manages to surpass expectations and gets the whole reboot to a new level. It keeps being very emotional and with a lot depth, but also, it gets dark and intense, even brutal in some way. It´s very well thought out and makes you want more after an intense but soft ending. It feels short and you are in the moment it starts thanks to the incredible new world they show us, with apes riding horses and haunting. It´s spectacular and rough. Incredible what they have achieved with the way apes look and act. Probably the best blockbuster of 2014 so far. Expand

It's smarter, creepier, more intense, and directed with more inspiration. Usually summer blockbusters, including this one's predecessor, have the air of a generic, factory made item. Even the very good one's usually have this. For the most part, Dawn lacks it, which is a very good thing. The human characters have more depth this time around and the acting is more believable as well. There are some scenes in this movie that are simply jaw dropping, especially the battle sequences. The visual effects WILL at least get an Oscar nomination, unless either a miracle or giant pretentious snub occurs. Dawn is more akin to the atmospheric and eerie movie that I wanted Rise to be. Don't get me wrong, that was still a decent movie, but Dawn makes it look like crap in almost every area, except cgi. This is so far the best movie of the summer and maybe even the best wide release of the year at this point. Here's hoping for a Best Picture nom... And one for Serkis too. Expand

This movie has virtually no flaws. The characters are all well acted and, in the case of the apes, well animated. The computer graphics in the film are ridiculous. It's amazing to watch in motion, and the film always looks gorgeous and realistic.
The story too is complex and well developed throughout the film. You can never really guess where the plot will turn next, and that's great.
This is really just a spectacular film. Go see it. Tell your friends to see it. Tell your friends' grandparents to see it. It's awesome.

I heard good reviews for the film by many different critics so I was expecting a good film.
That's exactly what I got from the very start is has stunning action which is magnified if you watch the film in 3D which I would suggest strongly.
Even though the effects were stunning and the ape CGI was fantastic as well as the ape acting what really impressed me about the film was a relatively simple if fantastical story being so warmly and intelligently done. There is no black and white in this film. No bad guy that doesn't have real understandable reason for being the way they are and for a film with so much CGI to achieve such a mature story and tone is highly impressive to me. Yes it's a special effect blockbuster but the film has heart and never having watched the first one that both surprised me and delighted me.
They could have went down the obvious blockbuster road but they didn't and what they created is a very good film, very good and highly recommended.
