What a tremendous reboot. I was wary after the terrible Mark Wahlberg film, but this film was absolutely captivating from start to finish. They make you root for the apes, brilliant

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of my personal favorites of this year. The year started off rocky, but has blossome into a great year. With the few exceptions of Transformers, Divergent, and AMWTDITW, this year has been quite a success. To me it a more successful year than last year.

This movie takes place years after the Rise of the Planet of the Apes and is ten times better. Of course the "end of the world fanboy" in me was getting all hyped up for this movie and it didn't disappoint. Everything in the movie was pretty good, expect for the CGI at parts, but luckily CGI doesn't make a movie bad or good. Thoug at some parts the CGI was one of the best I've ever seen. The story is what got me hooked though. It really tells the tale of the struggles of a virus that almost wipes out the human race. The movie starts of slow, but it's mainly building up tension that builds joe between three groups. One ceaser is (spoiler) shot by Koba, all help breaks loose. The story is not totally comeplex and is quite a rehash, but they execute it perfectly. The acting is also fantastic by the lead human and it really shows the terrifying natur of the apes. Overall the movie is defiently worth seeing in theaters. 9.3

What makes it truly change the summer blockbusters game, though, are the emotions invested by the motion capture tech. Not only do the apes express their feelings convincingly, the script - to a large extent - prioritizes drama and subtext. We are, however, also treated to some killer setpieces (e.g., the tank scene). You, Matt Reeves, can be my wingape any time. Expand

The cinematography, editing, visual effects, directing match and exceed the high standards set by its predecessor, but what truly sets "Dawn" apart from others of its ilk is the surprising depth of thought and feeling that belies and bolsters its dazzling spectacle. The thematic foundations that were laid in "Rise" are built upon here and then some. What that film started to explore - human nature and animal instinct and how frighteningly closely those two things intersect - is looked at more in-depth and given a heightened sense of urgency in Dawn of the Planet of the Ape's post-apocalyptic context. Films like "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" gives the blockbuster genre a credibility that it is losing and shows you do not have to sacrifice a heart, a soul, a brain for a large budget - and they can be as big as each other. This is a franchise still alive, kicking and thumping its chest. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I just saw "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and I'm complete wordless. It's predecessor is damn good but this sequel comes with fury and strength. Not only is the best summer blockbuster I ever seen this year, is one of the most amazing movies put on cinema.

Synopsis: A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier.
They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

The interaction between apes and humans is kind of fascinating, the way Caesar talks to them is very believable: He wants to keep his family safe and he will not allow anyone to break in his home to do something else. Once again, the actors who play the apes are extraordinary. They really did a good job with the motion capture, and the other cast is good as well. Gary Oldman's character gets a few emotional scenes and Koba (played by Toby Kebbell) becomes a remarkable and badass character in The Planet of the Apes franchise leaving the tension setup of the movie take over. The action scenes are marvelous and incredibly cinematic, very realistic (the guns and the missiles) and the story is **** interesting. Koba has a deep hate for the humans due to his torture in the first movie and that hate turns him against Caesar: He attacks him but fails, attempts to kill the ape with humans weapon, burns his own house and makes everyone to believe that humans did that and they are capable of everything, which makes every ape attack the humans and start an unstoppable war with them!

The final battle is a thrilling, emotional and cinematic end to this masterpiece and I don't need to say nothing more. This movie is exciting, visually striking, intelligent and one of the best sci fi ever. I really recommend to see it! Go watch it, NOW!

Simply, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is one of the best movies of the summer, and possibly of the year. Visually stunning, emotionally deep, and an exciting sci-fi adventure.

The apes now seem to be more 'civilised'. They were granted language, intelligence, and morality (in the wake of a virus that killed most of the human race). They have a leader, Caesar (Andy Serkis). They have built a new home. They have gained morality. They do not fight each others, but they stick together for the sake of surviving. 'Ape do not kill ape'.

They lived in peace, until their path crossed the path of some survivors (apparently immune to the virus). These humans seek the use of an old hydroelectric dam to produce electricity.

The movie centers around the relationship of Caesar, and Malcolm (Jason Clarke), leader of the human survivors. Caesar seems to have some pity for those survivors who looked desperate. He (unlike other apes) realizes that apes and humans are like each others. They share numerous traits. They both seek the protection of their families.

What makes these apes special, is the brilliant performance of Andy Serkis. With every move, every look, Caesar seems to feel 'human'. While Caesar might represent the good side of the apes, Kuba (Toby Kebbell) certainly represents the evil side. He sees the humans as a threat and wants to execute them.

The story also centers around whether the apes should be considered as 'civilised'. While Dreyfus (Gary Oldman), another survivor and a leader in the group, thinks that 'they're animals', Malcolm seems to amazed by how far the apes have come.

The verdict: With some stunning imagery, a brilliant sci-fi emotional story, and some amazing performances, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes surely seems as one of the best movies of the year.

The acting all around was great from both the mocap cast and the physical cast, dividing sympathy equally between the apes and the humans. one hell of a movie

honestly, i don't know where to start. but, i guess i'll start with what i love the most about this movie which is the visual effect. they makes apes so interesting, i can watch a half an hour close up of those apes, with all variation of emotions. so many details. beside the apes, other scenes which need a visual effect also done beautifully. other aspects like cinematography and directing style also come close. Mark Revees definitely knew what he's doing. the epic scenes were very well handled. it was emotional and well... epic. and most importantly, we are all saved from the lame, dumb, overly done humors. thank god.

there were none that i dislike about it. but, somewhere around 45 minutes in, i got rather bored. they were just arguing. this is a very important part of the story, so they should have make it more exciting. but, there were still exciting parts slipped in though... one thing i hate is the cliché 'you were rained with bullets and survive without a scratch' kind of thing. come on, people, what are the odds? anyway, you should watch this...worth the money... awesome smart movie... if you like DOFP... this one is in the same level...

Then, it turns out the flu thing was not the main of the movie. The CGI monkeys were amazing. I wish the future Jurassic World #upcoming will learn from this movie. The drama plot is really move my heart. It's a breath-taking. Until the end, me and my bf still wonders who's the name of Caesar first son. Which means, the plot was made enchant us. It's an epic story and so many moral views I discovered. There were kids just went out from previous showtime before me, and they just had this remarkable 'deep conversation' of this movie. These kids learned well. Or, the movie gave them a flawless show. Two story-sides in the whole one time show, and the ending was showing the 'pretty much' misunderstanding reason of world war could began. How original... but, still it's a fact from reality situation of our world war, now. It really has the same great quality with the first movie. I mean, come on, people, this second movie even gives us the details and new stuffs. New and best stuffs. While in the middle of the screen, I got this feeling, "It feels like I watch LOTR:The Two Towers. I found amazing CGI and amazing new storyline." THAT's WHAT WE NEED FROM SEQUEL QUALITY!!!!

As I said before, if you guys think this movie lack of something, it must be the thrilling of human being chased by the monkeys, right? My favorite part was the building hide and seek, but as I said before, too short scene. If there still flu victims who still struggle to be alive, I bet this movie could get 10 points from me. But, those my wild-mind plot got paid by Gary Oldman heart-breaking crying scene. :'"((((

GIVE GARY OLDMAN AN OSCAR!!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is fantastic. I strongly urge you to see it.

There, that was the super short version of the review. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes transcends the universe in which it is set and enters into a broader discussion of war, diplomacy, survival and power. You could replace the apes in this film with Native Americans and whites in colonial times, Moors and Christians in medieval times and so on and you would experience the same powerful film.

The story occurs ten years after a plague unleashed by the experiment that create Caesar, the aptly named leader of the Apes, has destroyed most of humanity. The story centers around a small colony of human survivors and their interactions with the now thriving Ape colony led by Caesar.

The film opens with a well-crafted scene that shows the "humanity" of the apes and providing an immediate connection to the humans and yourself. The apes seek the same things humans do: security, love, peace and survival. However, when one of the humans from the colony stumbles upon, Ash, the friend of Caesar's son, seeds of discord are planted. In his fear he shoots without being threatened. Caesar intervenes and prevents the Apes from killing the small party of survivors who went into the woods in the hopes of restoring power to San Francisco by repairing a dam.

What ensues is a brilliant work of escalation of a conflict that is mots similarly analogized to WWI. The apes appear in San Francisco in force, terrifying the inhabitants. The humans respond by dispatching a small diplomatic contingent, but also opening and testing a massive arsenal in case of an ape attack.

It is at this point that the film-making hits it's peak. The diplomatic band and Caesar's loyal and more open-minded apes clumsily interact with each other. Tensions are high and nearly capitulate into death when one of the party, who holds a hatred for all things "sub-human" defies Caesar and retains his gun. All survive and the uneasy peace is maintained. The humans are allowed to stay and to continue work on the dam only because they provide medicine which saves the life of Caesar's queen. These interactions are indicative of broader themes present in colonialism, but without the western-superiority. The exchange of medicine and technology to a more "primitive", coupled with the assistance on the natives in a harsh environment. They show a burgeoning trust between two uneasy people and how mere exposure can reveal the humanity present within vastly divergent cultures. This culminates in an exchange between the teenage son of the colonist and Maurice, an Orangutan who is another trusted confidant of Caesar, where the boy reads a comic to Maurice because of Maurice's curiosity. The fact that these scenes involve humans and apes, literally different species, makes the message of exposure and coming to common understanding all the more powerful.

However, simultaneously, Kato, Caesar's chief lieutenant, an Apes tortured and abused by humans, scouts the human colony where he discovers the humans preparing for an attack. Blinded by both hate and fear, he believes that Caesar's indulgence of the humans is setting the apes up for destruction. He is furious when he sees apes fighting humans. He fights Caesar in a dominance battle and loses, badly. Still believing that the apes are in danger, he takes a drastic action. He sets the ape village on fire and steals human weapons, a sniper rifle of which he uses to shoot Caesar.

Here is where the WWI allegory becomes strongest. Europe prior to 1914 was a powder-keg, a continuous place of escalation and distrust where all it would take is one powerful act to unleash devastating war. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the spark needed and with Caesar shot and the village burning war was inevitable.

Kato leads an attack, which through some impressive juxtaposition and well-shot battle scenes, highlights the uselessness and destruction war can bring. Upon ceasing power, Kato is revealed not to be as noble as believed, not precisely Brutus and he goes mad with his new found power, breaking the ultimate tenant of apes do not kill apes. The film parlays this by showing the corrupting effect that access to vast stores of weapons can have upon a person or nation.

Kato is defeated by a rejuvenated Caesar in the end, but as he and the colonist leader stand in the ashes of the colony, they both realize that just like after Ferdinand's death, war is inevitable, that neither side can forgive or forget. In making this comment the film brings it's ultimate message: destruction begets destruction. Security through violence cannot be achieved. It is a message that can be applied to so many different conflicts, most notably now, the Middle East and places such as Iraq or Gaza.

Aside from the depth of the film, I just want to comment that the CGI is incredible and whoever did the special effects most certainly deserves the Oscar. It's a remarkable technical achievement

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first thing I want to get out of the way is the stellar performance of the great Andy Serkis. His portrayal of Cesar has been one of the best acted characters ever seen on film. He did that in 'Rise' and continues to do this in 'Dawn'; I have a great respect for this rising star who is thankfully becoming more and more recognized and I just want him to continue to do his amazing work. That being said, when the Oscar come by, the internet will most definitely want Serkis to be nominated as best actor. This would be amazing if this happened, but considering the predictability of the Academy's opinions, Serkis is unfortunately not going to get any awards. Is this a bad thing, no. in the grand scheme of film, I have found that the Oscars don't hold as much impact as they have in the past; and at the end of the day, Whether or not Serkis will be recognized by some over critical scholars should not impact Our love for an actor who love what he does and will continue to do what he loves.
With that out of the way, How does the film hold? In a word: amazingly. This provoking telling of the rising tension between the hyper-intelligent apes and the struggling remains of humanity brings out a complexity and intriguing narrative filled with relate able characters, superb visuals, and awe inspiring cinematography.
First, it is worth mentioning that Toby Keball as Koba gives an chilling performance almost equal to the level of Serkis's acting, Caesars right hand man, serving as the extreme side of one side of the spectrum in the Apes Vs Humans conflict in which years of former experimentation has made this scarred ape completely distrustful of humans. On the other side of this spectrum is the well advertised Gary Oldman character Dreyfus (who goes without saying does a good job), leader of the last of humanity. The film exercises many parallels between the humans and apes, and here we see just how similar these two characters are. Both have been greatly affected by the other side, and as a result both are willing to go to great extremes in revenge to another. In the center of this conflict is the human mediator Malcolm and his family, a also solid performance given by Jason Clarke. All of the characters are given a good amount of time to develop and characterization, which make the plot even more morally grey and excitingly tense.
As for the Storytelling, the film made a point to clearly define the view points of each side, so when both side erupt into all out war, it make the viewer emotionally conflicted in who they would like to win. This is greatly attributed to the spectacular visuals and cinematography. At this point it goes without saying that the visuals to this are breathtaking, the Mo-Cap and the CG I have made these ape so realistic to the point of any hint of the illusion being completely destroyed by the subtle details and realism that makes these apes come to the screen. It is something to note that many of the shots in this filming help bring out the complete range of emotion this brings out, from all out chaos, to silent mourning. The great cinematography comes out in the films action scene, bringing out great shots amongst these well thought out battle scenes. (SLIGHT SPOILER NOTE: One of the best demonstrations of this is in the scene where Koba hijacks a tank and rams it into the human compound as the camera follows the head of the tank spinning around, giving an amazing panoramic view of the battle).
You might be wondering why i'm not scoring this a ten. In this amazing film, i have a small knit the size of a tick clinging on the amazingly solid and strong gorilla that is this film. My one complaint is some of the comparatively underdeveloped human character. The main ones are Malcolm girlfriend and son, who serve as an emotional core for Malcolm, but fail to receive any characterization, this isn't all the way their fault, both of them are good actors, but they are never presented with any opportunities to show any individual characteristics. However, giving more time for them would have taken time away from developing the other characters, so ill take it as it is. However, this does not excuse my least favorite character Carver, who was unfortunately reduced to the standard "jerky character who is necessary to the group but we all know will end up ruining everything". Again, I don't Blame the actor Kirk Acevedo, but I do think that in a story that focuses on such morally ambiguous characters and situations there is a character who show no redeeming value. However, any complaints are immediately eclipses by the immense shadow casted by the amazing Caesar and the rest of this film. In a film industry full of "Tammys" and "Transformers: Age of Extinctions", you should do your self a favor and enjoy this amazing film in hope that future summer blockbusters can rise to this level.

It chronicles the relationship between the human survivors and a group of genetically modified apes led by Caesar. Through the evolution of the narrative events occur that leave the human survivors and the apes on the brink of war.

The cast includes Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, and the wonderful returning Andy Serkis as Caesar. The acting is in all regard good, but where it truly shines is in the scenes where Clarke's character is interacting with Caesar. The chemistry between the two leads is compelling, thrilling, and aw inspiring. Particularly due to Andy Serkin's phenomenal video capture work. Gary Oldman is also fantastic, (per usual) and no actor's presence seems to detract from the film.

Director Matt Reeves is one of the undeniable factors that makes 'Dawn' so great. Reeves direction is smart, intuitive, and filled with dozens of engaging shots. Reeves hits the mark with almost every frame and this greatly affects the overall intensity and emotion of the film. The screenplay is also admirable for creating memorable dialogue even if some of it fells like exposition.

'Dawn' also exceeds in exhibiting interesting social commentary throughout. The film presents themes of racial tension in intellectual ways and this is greatly appreciated due to the much-needed depth it adds. These social messages help to create a great deal social relevancy propelling the film past just great Si-Fi.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes improves over its predecessor in almost every way. From the stellar direction to the social commentary, 'Dawn" exceeds the summer blockbuster template to construct a film that is truly relevant while also being extremely entertaining.

Building on the aftermath of the last film, this movie places Caesar at the center of the story, and it's surprising how well it works, given that he and all of his simian costars are (wonderfully) computer generated characters. In fact, the only sleight I can give this otherwise wonderful picture is that the actual human characters feel much more artificial than the titular apes. Expand

Stimulating and Satisfying

A solid political thriller/siege flick. While it lacks the fun and optimism of the James Franco "Apes," it crafts a story that is stimulating and satisfying.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes falters just inches from perfection, mainly because it's somewhat predictable and convenient at times.

Yet, to make things simple. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is not only a fantastic movie filled with great action and emotion. It's also responsible for giving us a powerful sci-fi character to go side by side with the greatest in history like Darth Vader and Spock. That character is Caesar, who was already great in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, however in this movie we see his new phase in the evolution. We get to see what is in my opinion the most compelling character in a sci-fi int he past decade develop himself as a leader.

On top of that, we also get Koba, another fantastic ape that you're bound to keep in your mind for years to come.

Finally, I was super happy and surprise with how solid the human side of the story is. The movie never forgets that is about the apes, but it still manages to give us an interesting and well developed human story on the side.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is FANTASTIC.

In the annals of sequels, Dawn is to Rise of the Planet of the Apes what The Empire Strikes Back was to Star Wars — it’s that much better. A mainstream blockbuster with a lot on its mind, director Matt Reeves' synthesis of brains and brawn kicks it over the goalposts and out of the stadium.

Whatever anyone might think about the film as a whole, there is no question that Andy Serkis gives the most expressive, soulful, deeply felt performance of a non-human character the big screen has ever offered as the mature Caesar, the ape raised from childhood in captivity who now leads a band of a couple of thousand encamped in the Muir Woods north of San Francisco. His Roman namesake notwithstanding, the historical figure Caesar most resembles is none other than Abraham Lincoln, a wise, compassionate fellow with the common touch, old before his time, his eyes weary from all the suffering he’s seen, a peaceful sort by nature forced by fate to lead his followers in wartime and who is strong enough physically to take on, if pressed, any adversary.

The situation at the outset is plenty clear, so that even those who missed Rise will have no trouble quickly engaging with the action here. In the wake of the massive ape escape from the Gen-Sys Labs and their tear through San Francisco and over the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County, the virulent Simian Virus has, over the course of a decade, killed the vast majority of Earth’s human population and left the rest desperate to survive in a world that, among previous dystopian depictions, is not unlike that of Kevin Costner’s little-loved but intermittently resonant The Postman.

The members of Caesar’s community are, you might say, multiethnic; in addition to the dominant apes, there are orangutans, gorillas and bonobos, among others. They communicate mostly through a graceful, shorthand sort of sign language that is niftily translated via subtitles. Some of them are also expert horsemen, as seen in a startling initial action scene in which apes, darting from tree to tree as well as on land, make a savage attack on some elk and then battle a large bear.

Although their homemade compound is a makeshift mess, the world they inhabit is gorgeous; watching the film in 3D, you’re enveloped by dark, thick greens, wet leaves, clouds, mist and moisture (although completely convincing as Northern California, these scenes were mostly shot in forests near Vancouver and New Orleans). Much has been and will be made of the fact that this is the first time that performance capture 3D has been accomplished in practical settings rather than in a studio; the result is unquestionably stunning, just as the sight of up to 50 actors at a time running around in monkey suits is made to look entirely believable.

It’s been a long time since the apes have seen any humans, the few of the latter that remain locally having hunkered down in a decimated, foliage-covered San Francisco amassing weapons at the armory and trying to restore electrical power. This effort leads a small troupe led by cautious former architect and widower Malcolm (Jason Clarke), his nurse girlfriend Ellie (Keri Russell) and Malcolm’s insecure teen son Alexander (Kodi Smit-McPhee) to locate a dam in ape territory, a treacherous undertaking that produces startling revelations on both sides; the apes are upset to find that humans even still exist, while the latter are shocked to learn that apes can talk.

Although there is mistrust all around, Caesar arbitrates a truce, but factional fissures quickly appear. Although guns are supposed to be kept locked up, some trigger-happy types can’t help themselves, while one ape in particular, Koba (Toby Kebbell), who was a lab monkey in Rise, is a rabble-rouser for whom the only good human is a dead human. How each faction struggles to keep its own wayward members in line produces just as much consternation and suspense as does the bigger conflict between the separate species.

This aspect of the excellent screenplay by Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (the latter two the married co-writers and co-producers of Rise) emits grim but timely echoes of any number of contemporary societies coping with conflicts between moderate and extremist elements.

Without pummeling the viewer, the only thing so many action, big-budget-oriented directors seem to know how to do these days, Reeves delivers the goods with a fluid sense of imagery and an intelligence more philosophical than geeky or scientific.

These apes rule!

A evolução do personagem "César" é brilhante.

When the sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was announced, I knew it would be good. To my surprise, it was even better.

Having recently seen the original 1968 Planet of the Apes for the first time, I have gotten a new level of appreciation for the reboot trilogy, this film in particular, which is my favorite of the three.

To see the beginnings of the ape civilization is fascinating, but it wouldn't be nearly as interesting if it weren't for Andy Serkis' incredible performance as Caesar. Him and the Visual Effects artists had already brought this incredible character to life in the previous movie, but here, they cemented him as one of the decade's most memorable heroes.

Here the focus is on psychology. Koba is a great villain, with a strong performance from Toby Kebbell who has some hilarious "playing" dumb-ape scenes that are perfect - until he becomes a simplistic power hungry mad hatter at the end. He was broken by the world and thought he was helping the apes, then suddenly at the end he becomes simply insane and angry. The other "villain", Gary Oldman, is vastly underwritten - in fact the humans are in general. This film is less about a rift between humans and apes then it is about Caesar realizing apes aren't just inherently good because they're apes and not humans. I wish the ending were tighter in general and the human dilemma equal to the apes. Expand

Most folks, have bad taste still left over from 2001, when Mark Wahlberg headlined the Ill-fated Tim Burton remake of the same name. I liked it, but this is beside the point. Fox, lost all hope and canned any thoughts of a sequel to that version. Then in 2011, the unthinkable happened. A REBOOT (GASP). Rebooting franchises was starting to become a norm, and Fox deliberately invested..in what would be a giant hit .. "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes". Not only was that film so captivating and touching..it was also extremely groundbreaking in the technological advances. Using motion capture suits and WETA digital to bring the apes to life.
Three years later, and here we are. "Dawn of The Planet of the Apes" has hit the silver screen..and while it's not nearly as captivating the second time around. This sequel still proves a worthy entry into this beloved franchise, offering richer and emotional character development. Something an audience member can appreciate. I don't want to sound cheesy...but there is a slight chance that yes, you may go bananas.

If you stuck around after the credits during "Rise" then you would know a fluenza was starting to break out. (As a result of the apes escaping) "Dawn" picks up the pieces ten winters after the virus outbreak. The apes (head by Caesar) have colonized and are living life peacefully. That is until the remaining survivors, headed by Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and his girlfriend (Keri Russell) stumble upon them. Hoping to use the apes source of power .. to generate it for the other surviving humans. That is until one Ape.. Kopa, decides to wage war on all of humanity.

Say what you will, but the original "ROTPOTA" was pretty top notch in terms of quality. I was shocked just how good it turned out to be. However what makes the film so good? .. very rare does an effects team get all the credit. My hat goes off to the folks at WETA digital and their ever expanding tools of motion capture. They simply make it look easy. But, those motion capture suits are nothing without their performers. Andy Serkis (Caesar) steals inadvertently every scene he is in.

The process for how the apes have genetically evolved is something for the record books. The audience can feel the emotional integrity that Serkis infuses into the role. For that alone I feel he deserves an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. On the human side of things, Jason Clarke is a much better James Franco to root for. While Gary Oldman is right in his typical wheelhouse.

In addition, the story this time around is entertaining yes..but lacking in some variety. When you watch this film's predecessor, you sort of grow up with Caesar and watch him evolve, plus the technology of the time was superb. The second time, we have grown accustomed to the confines we are entitled too. Matt Reeves (director of Cloverfield) knows his own boundaries and vastly improves upon them. I just wish there was more personal one on one time with Caesar and maybe understand the pressure he has to face. The writing was not as strong as I thought it needed to be too also. While of course this is just me being nit picky. The film still embarks into some new territory, offering a glum look into the not so distant future.

For any performance..the emotional connection to the character is so important. Don't let anyone walk out of this film saying they were not connected of some sorts to the apes. There was a time when I thought to myself.."wow this is amazing, how are they doing this?". The vast majority of the landscapes are simply jawdropping. I can't commend the visual effects crew enough.

With a bolder story, enticing characters and more darker tone. "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" has enough action for everyone. It may be a little too darker for younger children. But for older ones..the message is insightfully endearing. You also don't need to be familiar with the original flick to understand this one. There are few references from "Rise". So if you're worried that you haven't seen the predecessor. Rest assured, you won't be confused.

Really though, what it boils down too at the end of the day is one person, and his name is Andy Serkis who carries the film on his shoulders, and reluctantly brings new definition to the world of motion capture. It's something no person, nor reviewer can explain. In this process he puts all humans to shame..and actual apes everywhere.

B+

While it touches the 'usual, cliched' storyline in typical clash of civilizations type of film, it is a great blockbuster filled with great characterization and spectacle. Expand

Smart and impeccably well crafted, this installment's first half is a little weak at times, but the second half is unmatched in recent times from war films. Honestly, this and its first installment have to be some of the best war films of this decade and up there for this century as a whole. Director Matt Reeves picks up where Rupert Wyatt left off with a beautifully poetic and stunningly crafted film about Caesar and the apes. Mirroring foreign politics on the brink of war in real life, all of those same problems and confusions are represented here with a deeply human and moving film the result. Neither side is good, neither side is bad. Instead, it is one big shade of gray with plenty of confusion on both sides. The cinematography and score are once more incredible. The special effects are fantastic and the fight choreography incredibly impressive. Many modern day blockbusters lack weight and an air of importance and "epicness". This one has it all in spades with a truly incredible film that packs a true emotional punch due to the trauma that can come from misunderstandings. Once again, the modern day Planet of the Apes delivers. Expand

Good movie if you liked the first Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Continues the story line of Cesar and his crew, but later in the movie more conflict.
Acting was decent, but no real peril was felt for the humans honestly. I felt more feelings for the apes in this one honestly. Rise had more human-ape interaction, and Dawn has more ape-ape following to be honest.
See it in theaters for a good flick, buy it if you liked the first, but not worth a second or third view, it stumbles at times to hold your attention.

It almost reaches the levels of praise that some reviewers are giving. Its a close masterpiece. I felt the climax and ending could have been handled a little differently. It almost happens so fast that you feel like the rug is pulled up from under you, because the film is just starting to hit a terrific pace that I did want to stop. The script is laced with all kinds of good allegories and you could read practically anything into this engaging and sometimes brutal tale. I stared in wonder on just how good the apes looked. It was incredible seeing them. The humans do get the short stick and there is no picture given on the events outside of San Fran. This sequel though has me looking forward to the 3rd film which I thought would never happen. I found first one mildly entertaining, but it is nothing like this one. Expand

The director Matt Reeves he's just amazing in this movie with his directing and story telling the way he telling the story is really interesting and open a lot of thought , there's also some camera angle that really makes me exciting and he uses it very efficient.

The main character Caesar is again really great in the movie and i have to give credit to Andy Serkis he's just amazing and deserve some award winning.

Ultimately Dawn of The Planet of The Apes is exactly the movie you want it to be it has a great script , great characters especially Caesar and the director Matt Reeves is doing a great job , the movie has some problem with some human characters though but i think it is a trade they have to make because the movie is 2 hours and 10 minute already if they spend more time to develop more characters it will be like 3-4 hours , l think it is still a only negative thing i have in this movie , other than that are just great and this movie is for sure the best movie of 2014 so far just go and see it !!.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes manages to create anticipation very early on, within a story that is so emotionally satisfying we can't help but feel that urge to cry. The action sequences are exponentially caught, the characters involved draw admiration on all levels, and the ending is one that is extensively heartfelt. The music grips you and makes you care even more about Caesar's, and Maurice's fate. Where it really thrives though, is on the emotional level. You don't know who you should root for, to the point where even as the viewer, you want peace over war. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a great film. It is an emotional roller coaster that plays on the heartstrings through uncertain fates and the viewer's own, uncertain allegiance. Expand

It lacks in pure acting ability, but that is strictly reserved for the poorly cast human characters. The apes are portrayed, acted and integrated into the world with seamless precision, allowing for the needed suspension of disbelief.

The story is quite familiar, but also refreshing, a turn of events that the first film in the rebooted franchise doesn't foreshadow. With humanity seemingly at a moment of extreme crisis the world over, Caesar, the original ape who developed increased intelligence and who became the leader of his kind, has led his people into the thick forests of California to establish a home. The entire film centers around the interaction between a small colony of humans and Caesar's tribal apes.

It all progress with fantastic tempo, the pacing only surpassed by the anticipation it builds in the viewer. "What's going to happen?" is a question many movies attempt to have the viewer ask themselves, but only the minority actually succeed at. This film is in that excellent minority.

The only flaws, to my eyes, were as I said: the humans. Gary Oldman, despite being casted in a type of role I've always felt he was suited for, is underutilized in comparison to certain other people. These others, a mixed bag of performances, are mostly overshadowed and at times insignificant to the apes themselves. Perhaps this was inevitable when considering the story, but I do feel that more could have been done to provide a more balanced and engaging human colony in terms of casting and performance.

In the end, I got my money's worth and then some, with only the smallest complaint to offer. Now, my opinion may be more favorable to the reboot as I am one of those who have never seen the originals (shocking, I know), but I can't imagine this film or the last doing any disservice to the classics of the past. Worth the price of admission, and shines well above your average summer blockbuster fare.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As an unashamed fan of the original Planet of the Apes films (which I once picked up for under a fiver), I am more than happy to enjoy this Sequel to the Reboot of the Remake of the Planet of the Apes. What’s been delivered is another entertaining film; almost, but not quite the equal of its predecessor, with a decent story and characters, and special effects at the top of their game.

An expedition of humans has ventured deep into ape territory with the intention of restarting a hydroelectric dam to restore power to the ruins of San Francisco. With a deep mistrust of humans at the very core of ape doctrine, the plan becomes a tense diplomatic mission as the humans and apes negotiate to avoid another brutal conflict and needless loss of life.

Caesar is played by master of motion capture Andy Serkis and amazingly, the motion capture was largely filmed on location in the forests of Vancouver, the CGI seamlessly integrated with live action. As a character, Caesar is rare among apes in that he was raised by a human and can see the good in them.

Our human hero is Malcolm (Jason Clarke), a survivalist and engineer, who is in charge of the expedition, but is not much of a leader. Neither is he a diplomat, but he is level headed enough to develop a relationship with Caesar, with whom they share a common goal which transcends the interspecies squabble – each has a family they would do anything to protect.

The real leader of the humans is back in San Francisco: the militaristic but pragmatic Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) who has already lost his family (he swipes through their pictures on a prominently placed iPad – in shops now!) and has little desire to understand or relate to the apes.

The previous director Rupert Wyatt is replaced here by Matt Reeves, who gave us found footage monster movie Cloverfield, where the tantalising excitement of citywide destruction just off-screen was undermined by the idiotic decisions made by the protagonists. There are shades of this frustrating characterisation here with one member of Malcolm’s team, Carver.

He is nothing more than a catalyst; right from the opening scene, where he shoots first and thinks later, wounding Caesar’s son Blue Eyes in the process, everything about him screams “I’m the **** who’s constantly going to jeopardise this fragile diplomacy” – which is barely saved from the brink of collapse more than once before the inevitable final showdown.

Koba fills this role for the apes, but he is a stronger character and an established personal rival of Caesar, who tries to corrupt the younger apes, including Cesar’s impressionable young son Blue Eyes.

We also remember the dramatic “No!” – The first words spoken by an ape in both Conquest and Rise, when Caesar flexes his vocal chords to deliver an ultimatum to the humans, but the apes here tend to converse in sign language amongst themselves. Perhaps they see spoken language as a hallmark of humanity, but they prefer to save their English skills to dramatically intimidate humans, reminding them that they share a level of intelligence which apes may even have surpassed with their sense of community. While the apes have built a new society from the ground up, the surviving humans continue to scavenge in the ruins of their decaying civilisation, relying on old technology.

There’s a great scene about halfway through the film. Power is restored to an old petrol station in the woods, and as it flickers into life a song plays from a stereo: The Weight by The Band, a song which is both religious allegory and an exploration of the music which flows from the American South. Its thematic relevance extends to include references to Judgement Day and the American civil rights movement.

Hearing recorded music and seeing artificial light, symbolic of humanity’s legacy, offers a spot of hope, which is inevitably undercut by the melancholy of the world lost and the inevitability of an impending finale, which I’m going to talk about now, so stop reading to avoid spoilers. Hey, I’ve already told you that they managed to get the power back on so Gary Oldman can charge his iPad.

The audience wants a fight, we’ve paid to see apes with machine guns, and a fight is what we get, courtesy of the hot headed Koba and unrelenting Dreyfus. Lamentably although hell inevitably breaks loose, credibility is stretched. The previously pacifist apes are far too good at using the machine guns they have only recently stolen from the humans.

We know the apes have both intelligence and physical strength on their side, but it’s hard to explain hold their own so well against the trained human guards. Ultimately, they overwhelm the humans with sheer numbers, when they might have concocted a strategic assault using some kind of unique and established ape advantage, such as their non verbal communication, or climbing ability.

Prior to watching this: I've seen the previous film (Rise),and the first two of the original films in the 60/70's. I've not read the novel(s?) nor seen the Tim Burton reboot.

Pros: Good facial capture CGI and relatively good story. Cons: 1. There were slow pacings at a couple of times where the director wanted us to get more emotionally attached to the apes and to the good humans - it didn't work on me and it made me look at my watch about 3 times.
2. Some of the bad humans behaved rather stupidly and illogically which is a sign that the script was inadequate at character development and at explaining why the characters had decided to act in the way they did.
3. I also think the apes have been portrayed as being far too smart at certain times to the point of being able to come up with complex plans. This level of complexity took humans several thousands of years to develop and only the smartest of us are capable of it. It just made the plot unrealistic. The first film (Rise) had the right amount of stretching the reality. This film went too far.

This was a good film with an even greater message.

This film was an optical shotgun blast. I found myself having to remind myself these were not real apes. So on that task, job well done. The battered San Francisco was a nice compliment to the jungle homeland of the apes.

What else I liked about the film was I like both factions which I found a little odd. Usually you align with a faction and stick to it. This film did a good job of muddying the waters and not letting you go all in on either side. Other than a character or two, you are emotionally behind every one of them. They have all known loss and pain.

The strongest part of this film is the message that it delivers. No single group, race, gender is morally better than another. Every faction has its good and its bad. This is what sold the film and made it an 8 out 10.

I’m glad they set this one eight years after the last one (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) because it allows for the realistic decay of humanity to happen quickly. Or was it ten. Anyway, we can get to the cool setting, in which the apes are in charge and a seeming threat to humanity once again. Is that a spoiler? I’m sorry. Shut up. So there’s no more James Franco, but there is a whole new cast of interesting characters. Last film we had scientists as the main characters, now we have survivalists. Well, they’re scientific too. But anyway, while they cannot steal the show like Cesar (Andy Serkis) does, they pulled off the roles that the story needed very well. My eye was always on Gary Oldman. The Dreyfus guy. Yes, that’s right, Gary Oldman’s character has a name. And it’s Dreyfus. I’ll get to him in my spoiler review.
As I said earlier, Cesar is definitely established to be the main character in the first few scenes of the film. We see what he’s been up to since his escape from San Francisco and how much he’s grown intellectually. I’ll have to say that I’m very impressed with the realistic direction that this reboot decided to go in. And when I say realistic, I’m not talking about the CGI play-dough apes. I’m talking about the fact that they resemble real apes, and not humanoid apes. It’s interesting to see how apes might behave had they higher intelligence. However, this is more of a tension movie than it is an action movie, if that is indeed what the posters are implying. Is it more the fear of the apes attacking than the apes themselves attacking. Nonetheless, this film is a big step up from the last one and absolutely kills it. However, it feels like more of a chapter than a film itself. When I look back and think on it, I’m not sure there was an awful lot that happened in it. I also feel like they could have picked a better spot in the eight years that had passed to film two hours of it for us to see. It felt sort of like a day in the times of the planet of the apes. That should really have been the title for this film. A Day in the Times of the Planet of the Apes. Nonetheless, it’s a damn good time, and probably one of the better films you’re going to see all year if you’re into sci-fi or whatever. Just remember, tension. Then action.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" 10 Scale Rating: 8.5 (Fantastic) ...

The Good: While they are very different films, the sequel transitions flawlessly from the first and fits into the franchise perfectly. You get so used to the apes, that you forget that they are created with special effects. That is the mark of truly fantastic work and you can't help but be impressed. In films like this, it is easy for the human actors to fall to the wayside, but that does not happen here .. at least not with the leads. Jason Clarke's Malcolm believably connects with Caesar and forms a bond that I feared would not be achievable. It's a shame that Serkis won't get award consideration due to being a motion capture actor. He deserves it. The battles were intense and the film does a great job causing you to wonder if your favorite characters will live or die. Lastly, the film is very poignant and provides excellent social commentary without cramming it down your throat. A worthy successor, which is hard to come by these days.

The Bad: I gotta admit it ... scenes of monkeys, riding horses, wielding machine guns, and leaping through fire were among the more ridiculous scenes that I have ever seen. They were during some very serious moments, and I couldn't help but laugh at them. Some of the supporting cast was pretty cliche and forgettable. They also weren't well characterized and I didn't even see what happened to a few of them.

THIS is what the remakes should have been from the start! The action is great, the CG is looks pretty good and the story is great enough to keep everyone on edge. A huge plus is that you really wouldn't have had to of seen the previous films to enjoy this one since there aren't too many references to them or their characters. Easily worth the time and price of renting! Expand

Thankfully, everyone involved was fully aware of that and delivered another smart blockbuster with a lot of vital commentary on the futility of war and violent conflicts. The film doesn't want you to pick a side too easily as hostility between the last remaining humans on Earth and the intelligent apes arise. There are decent and bad characters on both sides. This makes for an interesting ride, as the conflict spins more and more into chaos and there is little anyone can do against it, after a point of no return. Once again, the CGI is incredible, thanks to great motion capture acting and the accompanying special effects. Thankfully, the human actors are en par, especially Gary Oldman only takes two short scenes to make a strong point for being one of the best of his generation. The gloomy atmosphere, the great cinematography, it all adds up to an intelligent and pretty damn entertaining continuation of the story. If there is one complaint it would have to be that the ending is merely a cliffhanger for what's next in part three. But at least we all have something to look forward to. Expand
