Stimulating and Satisfying

A solid political thriller/siege flick. While it lacks the fun and optimism of the James Franco "Apes," it crafts a story that is stimulating and satisfying.

Very good drama and well executed either by acting or CGI. The few action scenes are intense and keep you on edge. A little bit predictable, how ever acceptable. Hail Caesar!

Very close behind him is Toby Kebbell as Koba, another ape. None of the actors playing humans such as Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell and Kodi Smit-McPhee stand a chance when they are on screen with the aforementioned apes or the other ape actors like Judy Greer, Karim Konoval and Nick Thurston.

First and foremost I must emphasize that “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” must be seen on the BIG movie screen just as “Gravity” had to be seen in a movie theatre to really be appreciated.

The only other ‘Ape” movie I have seen was the very first in 1968 and just the production values from makeup to costumes to special effects since then is a show in itself. It is beyond my comprehension how visual effects supervisors Joe Letteri and Dan Lemmon achieved what they do in this movie.

The direction gets the strong hand that it needs from Matt Reeves. The script writers Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver follow the trend and true westerns of the past with bad guys and apes versus good guys and apes, including a high noon shoot out and a major draw dropping fight out between the hero and villain--no, not who you think!

The bottom line is that “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” has to be seen in a movie house on the large or it will be just another meaningless movie. Get ready for an ape to win the major acting prizes!

First and foremost Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a remarkable technical achievement setting a new benchmark for CGI acting and the emotion conveyed on the faces of the apes is quite frankly unbelievable. Fortunately there is an entertaining plot to match making for an excellent all round watch.

"There is no dawn without darkness." Or was it, "the night is always darkest before the dawn"? Oh well. My point is...what was my point again?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a good movie. It has received "Universal acclaim" from Metacritic users. I don't like to be negative--especially with such a highly-praised movie--but I do have a few complaints. One, the humans. I think all the humans should've had a bit more development. One person I have specifically in mind when I say that is Dreyfus (played by Gary Oldman), leader of the remaining human survivors--who are somehow immune to the virus. (Exactly how are they immune?) Anyway, he had much less screen time than he deserved. The only real insight into his history is a picture on an iPad screen. The rest of the humans don't mention much about their history and past, except for snippets we learn in conversations. Two--the collapse of humanity is not really shown. I get that apocalypses and utopian/dystopian worlds have been done MANY times in all kinds of media--books, movies, TV, etc. But I would've liked to see more of what was left of the human world. On the plus side, a growing ape civilization IS shown. That's definitely unique and original. Three, we don't see much of what happens 10 or so years after the virus spreads. Well, we know--but we don't see much except for a quick montage. I would've liked to see more. The transition from the first film to this sequel is a bit too quick. And, four, I honestly would've liked to have seen some of the cast from the first film in the sequel (especially Dr. Will Rodman played by James Franco). All of these four suggestions could have easily been done through flashbacks throughout the film. But, I don't want anyone to mistake my suggestions for criticism. Because after many disappointments this year, I'd say this is definitely not one of them.

The movie accomplishes what many films probably couldn't. Like making you be drawn to the apes, a species who are still developing and learning. (They're still getting the hang of talking. But when the apes do talk, it mesmerizes you.) This film manages to make you pray that not one bullet is fired by the apes or humans. Because one bullet could set aflame the tension, animosity, and suspense between the two species and could lead to war. But it seems war is inevitable, and someone is bound to screw up and ruin the fragile peace between the apes and humans. The film has superb CGI, as pointed out by many.

The film is good...but I feel "Rise" was better. I don't know why. Despite all that "Dawn" has going for it (those four small suggestions weren't really an issue), I didn't connect on a certain level with Dawn. I feel like Metacritic user "jyeager11". I quote his review, "Could the addition of writer and Executive Producer Mark Bomback have negatively impacted the end product that much? I'm not sure. I wasn't there. And it's not like 'Dawn' is a *bad* movie. There's a lot about it I enjoyed (...) there's nothing technically wrong with this movie (... ) But there's nothing there that makes me likely to purchase a physical DVD copy anytime soon."

So, I liked Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. But I think certain things should've been expanded on a bit. Overall, it's a good film missing a FEW things IN MY OPINION. This sequel leaves me anxiously waiting for the next film in this series. (Maybe the apes are more evolved, talk fluently, and begin to emerge as Earth's dominant species?)

If you liked this review, read my other ones on movies, TV shows, and videogames. I have reviewed the 2014 films Transformers: Age of Extinction, Edge of Tomorrow, X-Men Days of Future Past, Godzilla, Blended, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Lego Movie, and more. I am actually still trying to find time for other film reviews, such as Robocop, Non-Stop, Divergent, Need for Speed, The Monuments Men, etc. I also review TV shows, such as Fox's "Sleepy Hollow", ABC's "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD", CW's "The 100", Fox's "I Wanna Marry Harry", NBC's "Crisis", Fox's "Gang Related" and more.

Good bye! Sincerely, AG732.

The origin story continues to progress. The balance of relative peace between apes and humans balances on the edge of a knife. Things like political maneuvers show us just how much these apes have grown in intelligence.

The film doesn't shy away from it's moral center. This time around the apes aren't completely victims. Caesar is coming to the realization that the apes are no longer that different from the humans they once fought. There is some truly powerful stuff going on here.

The origin of the new Planet of the Ape series continues to show brilliance. This time the human performances are all up to the task. The motion capture is just as fantastic as ever. The apes still look like animals with human intelligence. The future of the series looks bright.

"Dawn" is a powerful movie. One with enough action and heart to enchant all audiences. The beauty and horror of it's post-apocalyptic needs to be seen.

I give "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" a 9.8/10.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes manages to create anticipation very early on, within a story that is so emotionally satisfying we can't help but feel that urge to cry. The action sequences are exponentially caught, the characters involved draw admiration on all levels, and the ending is one that is extensively heartfelt. The music grips you and makes you care even more about Caesar's, and Maurice's fate. Where it really thrives though, is on the emotional level. You don't know who you should root for, to the point where even as the viewer, you want peace over war. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a great film. It is an emotional roller coaster that plays on the heartstrings through uncertain fates and the viewer's own, uncertain allegiance. Expand

The film had an essence that seemed to capture the tone of the entire series so far as well as forging the future of the franchise. The studio was granted a generous budget and made the very most of it. Looking forward to the next chapter of this sensational story,

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A must see movie. The movie takes place 10 years after the Simian flu has wiped out most of the human race and the apes are very intelligent. We follow Cesar (Casear? I don't know how to spell it) who we also followed in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. He has started a community of apes in the mountains just beyond San Fransisco. A small of group of humans encounter them and want their permission to use the dam nearby to re-power their community downtown which is almost out of gas for their generators. Cesar lets them do their work and there is finally peace and trust after Cesar's wife is cured from her sickness. That is until Koba, an ape that has pure hatred towards the humans, shoots Cesar and gets more apes to burn down their community. He blames the humans on the attack and death of Cesar and tells them to go to war with the humans. They all go downtown and an intense battle ensues. The group from earlier that escaped the burning community find Cesar almost dead on the ground and take him back to his old house that we saw in Dawn and he gets fixed. His son, Blue Eyes (I think) frees the humans and captive apes downtown and Cesar takes down Koba and they all wait as war approaches from another city. (I didn't add all details fyi) Expand

one hell of a movie

honestly, i don't know where to start. but, i guess i'll start with what i love the most about this movie which is the visual effect. they makes apes so interesting, i can watch a half an hour close up of those apes, with all variation of emotions. so many details. beside the apes, other scenes which need a visual effect also done beautifully. other aspects like cinematography and directing style also come close. Mark Revees definitely knew what he's doing. the epic scenes were very well handled. it was emotional and well... epic. and most importantly, we are all saved from the lame, dumb, overly done humors. thank god.

there were none that i dislike about it. but, somewhere around 45 minutes in, i got rather bored. they were just arguing. this is a very important part of the story, so they should have make it more exciting. but, there were still exciting parts slipped in though... one thing i hate is the cliché 'you were rained with bullets and survive without a scratch' kind of thing. come on, people, what are the odds? anyway, you should watch this...worth the money... awesome smart movie... if you like DOFP... this one is in the same level...

A group of genetically evolved apes leads a peaceful existence until a band of human survivors appears. This film spends more time in the ape world than it does with humans, which, considering the technology, makes it a mostly-animated film. Although there are a few moments of action, it's primarily a political drama. All that being said, they've managed to craft a compelling story and create a pretty convincing world. The storytelling can get a bit heavy handed and predictable, but it's still an effective adventure. Expand

I was really looking forward to seeing it, and for the most part I thought it was a great film. The writing was good, the acting was fantastic. It's amazing that we've reached a point with CGI where you totally empathise with and even shed some tears over some computer generated characters, but that's how I felt watching Caeser and the other apes. They certainly were the stars of the movie, with the human characters taking a back seat - but we wouldn't want it any other way. That said, some of the scenes when humans and the apes were connecting on a deeper level and building trust with each other were some of the strongest in the whole film. I think it's an allegory for the connection we need to make with animals and the environment - one that we have lost over the past few centuries. Some parts of the film I felt were a bit cliche and predictable though so that's why I'm giving it a 9. But overall it was engrossing and wonderful to watch. And my dad didn't fall asleep! Which is saying something in itself. I look forward to the next film. I just love science-fiction! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After seeing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes I was truly stunned. Everything in this film is incredible. From the motion capture acting by Andy Serkis to the wonderful special effects this movie is a fulfilling and rewarding. Beginning ten years after Rise of the Planet of the Apes the ape leader Ceaser tries to maintain peace between the few human survivors of the Simian Flu and his tribe of apes. However, the peace is destroyed when Koba an ape who hates humans kills Ceaser and blames the humans. However, Ceaser is still alive and it is now up to him to take back his kingdom all while Koba and the apes are attacking the humans. Before the film came out I did not know what to think. However, I was surprised by the emotional level of the film and how you could really see the emotion on the faces of all the apes. Motion capture changed this film franchise for the better. Also the script is amazing as it really has a large level of depth to it. Now I come to the acting. Jason Clarke who portrays Malcom a human is wonderful and gives a level of emotion to his character. Andy Serkis however playing Ceaser steals the show as he rightfully should. His character is so complex and he portrays him perfectly. In conclusion this film is a nearly perfect work of science fiction and will be remembered for years to come. Expand

The third movie in rebooted 'The Planet of the Ape' series and the
eighth movie in the franchise. After the excellent 2001 movie, it took
a decade for a sequel. Long wait really looked worth and that success
led to another quick sequel. I saw the night show before it makes debut
in the next day. The crowd was in average number, but I did not bother
for that and prepared to enjoy the show. Yes, I had a good time, but
not a hundred percent satisfied. So I am going to tell what I liked and
not.

This story commence after 10 years from the previous movie 'Rise'. It
is now post apocalypse and no one rules the world. The apes are living
in a group peacefully in the wild. One day they encounter half a dozen
of human survivors who are working out to put back the human dominance.
The humans and apes do not want a war, but some people inside thirst
for it because of the past suffers. Like the tagline, it is one last
chance for peace. Does it work or not is what the movie tries to
disclose.

Have you seen the DisneyNature's 'Project Nim'? It is like what if
something terrible happened to that project and Nim becomes a leader to
his kind. Here it was Caeser who leads his race towards a fresh and
civilized life. A leader must listen his followers and act according to
the circumstances. In this story it reveals apes are not far behind in
term of vengeance, betrayal and not believing in cooperation to build a
better tomorrow together. It is all about the two different race wanted
to dominate. This movie leaves a little clue before it conclude that
next movie could be 'War of the Planet of the Apes'. I am already
saying that will be a massive hit if it offers more action and
especially to watch in digital 3D would be a treat for sure. Praying
for it to hit the screen within the next two years of time.

One thing I don't understand is that so far three movies were made in
this series, but every time when the sequels are made the story leaps
too much forward. Don't get confused, what I am saying was between
these three movies the story won't follow exactly where the before one
ended. It commences very much ahead where we have to wonder what might
have happened in between the gaps. Yeah, they explain those in a
commentary mode in the opening, but I always felt that was not enough.
Though, few things make sense, like, somewhere somewhat it reveals the
connection between them all.

Last time, I thought the characters from the first movie going to meet
and it did not happen. So in this movie as well thought all of them
come together and again the answer was no. Like I earlier said it leaps
a long way without proper explanation. Every time new set of actors
hops in like a reboot movie. It is not bad, but the story was just okay
in this sequel, I mean not a genuinely written screenplay so I think
that is why the popular names were missing in the cast. That is, they
rejected the offer, I guess. When the press asked about that to the
producer in an interview, he said the previous characters are all dead
and the story moved on. But the real question is are you convinced by that? If you remember the first movie well like how it ended, somewhere Mark Wahlberg is going to come back in a future installment. That is what I have been expecting all the time. You know, this installment was largely ruled by animated ape characters. I can't say it was perfect, but almost. Those animated characters were in large numbers, I know the hard work behind, but still not convinced completely. Sometimes it looked made up of rubber and plastic than an organic body. World cinema is yet to give the best in that field. The master of motion capture performer, Andy Serkis had been brilliant like always. When there is a demand for character like this, he will be found in the front row. His skills really made those characters to display in a best way possible. So he was one of the highlights in the movie. When it came to the digital 3D, it was below par. Reason might be, it was a more dramatized story than filled with lots of actions and thrillers. Except in a couple of portion, the opening and the end scenes. In my experience this movie is not worth watching it in digital 3D. Since it was made as one you shall not say no to it because that is the future of the cinema and you should take part in the road it travelling. This movie was just good, not an awesome one like critics praising. The critics had a reason to do that, because they want 'Age of Extinction' fall behind so they are lifting this movie. For me, This movie was so simple, definitely not for who is looking for high octane stunt sequences and the story with twists. Entertainment is there and had great surround effects. I loved the first movie, the 2001 version and then the follow-up looked kind of afresh. So my rating kept falling movie after a movie in this series. Not in a large margin, but only by the fractions. Overall, one of the good movie that came in this mansoon.

These are the blockbusters with depth that are often missing in our big screens. The first part "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was surprisingly good, when nobody seemed to care after the disaster of a movie that Tim Burton created years ago. It was emotional and beautiful. Now, this second part of the new reboot manages to surpass expectations and gets the whole reboot to a new level. It keeps being very emotional and with a lot depth, but also, it gets dark and intense, even brutal in some way. It´s very well thought out and makes you want more after an intense but soft ending. It feels short and you are in the moment it starts thanks to the incredible new world they show us, with apes riding horses and haunting. It´s spectacular and rough. Incredible what they have achieved with the way apes look and act. Probably the best blockbuster of 2014 so far. Expand

It's smarter, creepier, more intense, and directed with more inspiration. Usually summer blockbusters, including this one's predecessor, have the air of a generic, factory made item. Even the very good one's usually have this. For the most part, Dawn lacks it, which is a very good thing. The human characters have more depth this time around and the acting is more believable as well. There are some scenes in this movie that are simply jaw dropping, especially the battle sequences. The visual effects WILL at least get an Oscar nomination, unless either a miracle or giant pretentious snub occurs. Dawn is more akin to the atmospheric and eerie movie that I wanted Rise to be. Don't get me wrong, that was still a decent movie, but Dawn makes it look like crap in almost every area, except cgi. This is so far the best movie of the summer and maybe even the best wide release of the year at this point. Here's hoping for a Best Picture nom... And one for Serkis too. Expand

This movie has virtually no flaws. The characters are all well acted and, in the case of the apes, well animated. The computer graphics in the film are ridiculous. It's amazing to watch in motion, and the film always looks gorgeous and realistic.
The story too is complex and well developed throughout the film. You can never really guess where the plot will turn next, and that's great.
This is really just a spectacular film. Go see it. Tell your friends to see it. Tell your friends' grandparents to see it. It's awesome.

The movie has some truly powerful moments that hit home. You will be on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next, because there's never a dull moment in this movie. Human or ape, the characters in the movie all have their own motivations that if you look at things from their point of view, you could justify almost all of their actions. Needless to say, the apes have evolved since the previous film and are now a tribal community led by Caesar who's teaching his son how to lead the apes when the time comes. The movie is intense and you'll walk out of the theater feeling glad that you went to go see it. If you have the choice, choose the 3D as the 3D is amazing and wonderfully utilized in this film. If you liked Rise, then you'll love Dawn. It builds upon what Rise established and raises the bar for its eventual sequel. This is certainly a Summer movie must-see. Expand

Most folks, have bad taste still left over from 2001, when Mark Wahlberg headlined the Ill-fated Tim Burton remake of the same name. I liked it, but this is beside the point. Fox, lost all hope and canned any thoughts of a sequel to that version. Then in 2011, the unthinkable happened. A REBOOT (GASP). Rebooting franchises was starting to become a norm, and Fox deliberately invested..in what would be a giant hit .. "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes". Not only was that film so captivating and touching..it was also extremely groundbreaking in the technological advances. Using motion capture suits and WETA digital to bring the apes to life.
Three years later, and here we are. "Dawn of The Planet of the Apes" has hit the silver screen..and while it's not nearly as captivating the second time around. This sequel still proves a worthy entry into this beloved franchise, offering richer and emotional character development. Something an audience member can appreciate. I don't want to sound cheesy...but there is a slight chance that yes, you may go bananas.

If you stuck around after the credits during "Rise" then you would know a fluenza was starting to break out. (As a result of the apes escaping) "Dawn" picks up the pieces ten winters after the virus outbreak. The apes (head by Caesar) have colonized and are living life peacefully. That is until the remaining survivors, headed by Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and his girlfriend (Keri Russell) stumble upon them. Hoping to use the apes source of power .. to generate it for the other surviving humans. That is until one Ape.. Kopa, decides to wage war on all of humanity.

Say what you will, but the original "ROTPOTA" was pretty top notch in terms of quality. I was shocked just how good it turned out to be. However what makes the film so good? .. very rare does an effects team get all the credit. My hat goes off to the folks at WETA digital and their ever expanding tools of motion capture. They simply make it look easy. But, those motion capture suits are nothing without their performers. Andy Serkis (Caesar) steals inadvertently every scene he is in.

The process for how the apes have genetically evolved is something for the record books. The audience can feel the emotional integrity that Serkis infuses into the role. For that alone I feel he deserves an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. On the human side of things, Jason Clarke is a much better James Franco to root for. While Gary Oldman is right in his typical wheelhouse.

In addition, the story this time around is entertaining yes..but lacking in some variety. When you watch this film's predecessor, you sort of grow up with Caesar and watch him evolve, plus the technology of the time was superb. The second time, we have grown accustomed to the confines we are entitled too. Matt Reeves (director of Cloverfield) knows his own boundaries and vastly improves upon them. I just wish there was more personal one on one time with Caesar and maybe understand the pressure he has to face. The writing was not as strong as I thought it needed to be too also. While of course this is just me being nit picky. The film still embarks into some new territory, offering a glum look into the not so distant future.

For any performance..the emotional connection to the character is so important. Don't let anyone walk out of this film saying they were not connected of some sorts to the apes. There was a time when I thought to myself.."wow this is amazing, how are they doing this?". The vast majority of the landscapes are simply jawdropping. I can't commend the visual effects crew enough.

With a bolder story, enticing characters and more darker tone. "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" has enough action for everyone. It may be a little too darker for younger children. But for older ones..the message is insightfully endearing. You also don't need to be familiar with the original flick to understand this one. There are few references from "Rise". So if you're worried that you haven't seen the predecessor. Rest assured, you won't be confused.

Really though, what it boils down too at the end of the day is one person, and his name is Andy Serkis who carries the film on his shoulders, and reluctantly brings new definition to the world of motion capture. It's something no person, nor reviewer can explain. In this process he puts all humans to shame..and actual apes everywhere.

B+

For the most part, the apes look real. There are some moments when they don't quite move like a living creature would move, but overall a really good job. The storyline is similar to the old Charleton Heston film, nothing new there. The acting is pretty mediocre, but it's probably difficult to act when the ape your talking to doesn't exist in real life. I did find it annoying when the apes spoke. They usually spoke very slowly, but when the word came out it was perfect English, so not sure why they couldn't speak faster. I know people love Gary Oldman but to me his performance was way over-the-top. Overall there were more things to like than dislike so I recommend it. Expand

The action and battle scenes are very well executed, albeit with predictable outcomes. The script and dialogue are not bad, but could've been better. The acting is good, although not compelling enough to have any emotional resonance.

The absence of these elements doesn't make it a bad movie, just not amazing as i expected it to be; especially after all the high reviews.

The special effects were very good, but I couldn't help but feel set back by some of the writing and distinct plot holes. The story needed reworking. Much of it felt like it had been adapted to get its PG-13 rating, dumbing down what could actually be in the movie. For example, none of the main characters ever died! For a movie that was begging for some dramatic deaths, I felt terribly betrayed. The story was also very, very cliche. The whole thing was an overt rip of Julius Caesar and the ape leader was even called "Caesar." The overall plot seemed something akin to a Disney movie. Replace all the characters with singing animals and take out 90% of the violence and it would be. The acting was okay; I never felt deeply enthralled in it nor disappointed by lack of authenticity. Maybe I'm being overly critical. It was a good movie. However, I wish the story would have been a little less cookie-cutter. Expand

See it in theaters for a good flick, buy it if you liked the first, but not worth a second or third view, it stumbles at times to hold your attention.

It wants to be more than "the lost world" with chimps though...it wants to be downright shakesperian, and at times IT IS. But the overall plodding pace leaves you in the middle ground between mildly entertained and seen-it-all-before. The amount of cliches packed into this film should have given the filmmakers pause and cued some more creativity as to how you film certain "necessary" scenes (SPOILERS: like when the fool brings a shotgun to the lakeside chimp retreat. Okay, a SHOTGUN?! A gun at all is ridiculous, but it pushes the story forward. a little pistol, i could imagine hiding. BUT A SHOTGUN? hidden by a little blue blanket in your wide open tool chest? get out of here with that). instead of playing with genre, which can result in great films we all buy on blu-ray, "Apes" feels like an attempt AT genre. and if you don't nail a straight up genre attempt, the movie can easily become camp, or worse...boring. But then again, when your fore bearer is the Planet of the Apes franchise, "Avoiding Camp" might have been this film's working title. And in that regard it is a success on par with its predecessor. The director Matt Reeves he's just amazing in this movie with his directing and story telling the way he telling the story is really interesting and open a lot of thought , there's also some camera angle that really makes me exciting and he uses it very efficient.

The main character Caesar is again really great in the movie and i have to give credit to Andy Serkis he's just amazing and deserve some award winning.

Ultimately Dawn of The Planet of The Apes is exactly the movie you want it to be it has a great script , great characters especially Caesar and the director Matt Reeves is doing a great job , the movie has some problem with some human characters though but i think it is a trade they have to make because the movie is 2 hours and 10 minute already if they spend more time to develop more characters it will be like 3-4 hours , l think it is still a only negative thing i have in this movie , other than that are just great and this movie is for sure the best movie of 2014 so far just go and see it !!.

I heard good reviews for the film by many different critics so I was expecting a good film.
That's exactly what I got from the very start is has stunning action which is magnified if you watch the film in 3D which I would suggest strongly.
Even though the effects were stunning and the ape CGI was fantastic as well as the ape acting what really impressed me about the film was a relatively simple if fantastical story being so warmly and intelligently done. There is no black and white in this film. No bad guy that doesn't have real understandable reason for being the way they are and for a film with so much CGI to achieve such a mature story and tone is highly impressive to me. Yes it's a special effect blockbuster but the film has heart and never having watched the first one that both surprised me and delighted me.
They could have went down the obvious blockbuster road but they didn't and what they created is a very good film, very good and highly recommended.

The sequel to that movie is here, and has it improved on its predecessor? Dawn of the Planet of the Apes does improve on its predecessor, but also packs in so much more that it makes me more than excited for sequels to this franchise. Let's start talking about the story. The main plot here is that most of mankind has been wiped out by the brutal Simian flu. However, there is still a large group of survivors in San Francisco, and they need fuel and power. A very small group of survivors start heading to the dam, but they come across the apes. The story gets so much deeper, and also offers many plot twists that were constantly amazing. The human characters here truly aren't the real shining stars, but they still offer things to the table. I cared about the main family and the other characters. The main character, which is also the father of the main family (Jason Clarke), was very, very good, and I loved seeing him interacting and talking with Caesar and his fellow apes. Speaking of Caesar and the apes, Andy Serkis here might just have performed the best motion capture performance ever as Caesar. One of the other main apes, Koba, is a true menace, but he never came off as generic. There's also a good amount of depth to him, too. Gary Oldman is basically known as the one who keeps control over the people. He doesn't like the apes at all, but he never came off like a cruel jerk, even though there wasn't an insane amount of depth to him. With the characters and story, Dawn offers so much emotional depth that is extremely smart and gripping. Have I forgot to talk about the CGI? It is simply outstanding. The apes look real. I know real is used a lot when talking about CGI, but I couldn't believe how amazed I was by how detailed the apes were. The action here becomes intense and amazing. I don't know about you, but I'd choose seeing apes riding horseback with dual-wield LMGs jumping over fire over anything this summer. While I won't spoil it here, the ending here is powerful. There was just one slight problem with it. It is that I thought the actual war between the apes and humans was left annoyingly hanging. Then again, it sets up for a sequel, and that's something I want more than anything in movies right now: a sequel to this phenomenal movie. Not only will Dawn of the Planet of the Apes be one of my favorite summer movies this year, it will be in my Top 5 out of 2014 for sure. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I just saw "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and I'm complete wordless. It's predecessor is damn good but this sequel comes with fury and strength. Not only is the best summer blockbuster I ever seen this year, is one of the most amazing movies put on cinema.

Synopsis: A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier.
They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

The interaction between apes and humans is kind of fascinating, the way Caesar talks to them is very believable: He wants to keep his family safe and he will not allow anyone to break in his home to do something else. Once again, the actors who play the apes are extraordinary. They really did a good job with the motion capture, and the other cast is good as well. Gary Oldman's character gets a few emotional scenes and Koba (played by Toby Kebbell) becomes a remarkable and badass character in The Planet of the Apes franchise leaving the tension setup of the movie take over. The action scenes are marvelous and incredibly cinematic, very realistic (the guns and the missiles) and the story is **** interesting. Koba has a deep hate for the humans due to his torture in the first movie and that hate turns him against Caesar: He attacks him but fails, attempts to kill the ape with humans weapon, burns his own house and makes everyone to believe that humans did that and they are capable of everything, which makes every ape attack the humans and start an unstoppable war with them!

The final battle is a thrilling, emotional and cinematic end to this masterpiece and I don't need to say nothing more. This movie is exciting, visually striking, intelligent and one of the best sci fi ever. I really recommend to see it! Go watch it, NOW!

Simply, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is one of the best movies of the summer, and possibly of the year. Visually stunning, emotionally deep, and an exciting sci-fi adventure.

The apes now seem to be more 'civilised'. They were granted language, intelligence, and morality (in the wake of a virus that killed most of the human race). They have a leader, Caesar (Andy Serkis). They have built a new home. They have gained morality. They do not fight each others, but they stick together for the sake of surviving. 'Ape do not kill ape'.

They lived in peace, until their path crossed the path of some survivors (apparently immune to the virus). These humans seek the use of an old hydroelectric dam to produce electricity.

The movie centers around the relationship of Caesar, and Malcolm (Jason Clarke), leader of the human survivors. Caesar seems to have some pity for those survivors who looked desperate. He (unlike other apes) realizes that apes and humans are like each others. They share numerous traits. They both seek the protection of their families.

What makes these apes special, is the brilliant performance of Andy Serkis. With every move, every look, Caesar seems to feel 'human'. While Caesar might represent the good side of the apes, Kuba (Toby Kebbell) certainly represents the evil side. He sees the humans as a threat and wants to execute them.

The story also centers around whether the apes should be considered as 'civilised'. While Dreyfus (Gary Oldman), another survivor and a leader in the group, thinks that 'they're animals', Malcolm seems to amazed by how far the apes have come.

The verdict: With some stunning imagery, a brilliant sci-fi emotional story, and some amazing performances, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes surely seems as one of the best movies of the year.

This was a good film with an even greater message.

This film was an optical shotgun blast. I found myself having to remind myself these were not real apes. So on that task, job well done. The battered San Francisco was a nice compliment to the jungle homeland of the apes.

What else I liked about the film was I like both factions which I found a little odd. Usually you align with a faction and stick to it. This film did a good job of muddying the waters and not letting you go all in on either side. Other than a character or two, you are emotionally behind every one of them. They have all known loss and pain.

The strongest part of this film is the message that it delivers. No single group, race, gender is morally better than another. Every faction has its good and its bad. This is what sold the film and made it an 8 out 10.

Both the main ape characters Caesar and Koba (played by Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell respectfully) were great. I really enjoyed their intensity. The only complaint I have is that I would have liked to have seen more from Gary Oldman. It looks like he was going to have a bigger role in the film than he really did. This installment is just as good if not better than any of the Planet of the Ape films. I can't tell if I like it better than Rise of the Planet of the Apes or not. Or wasAlright, so this is the second part in our Planet of the Apes reboot. I’m glad they set this one eight years after the last one (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) because it allows for the realistic decay of humanity to happen quickly. Or was it ten. Anyway, we can get to the cool setting, in which the apes are in charge and a seeming threat to humanity once again. Is that a spoiler? I’m sorry. Shut up. So there’s no more James Franco, but there is a whole new cast of interesting characters. Last film we had scientists as the main characters, now we have survivalists. Well, they’re scientific too. But anyway, while they cannot steal the show like Cesar (Andy Serkis) does, they pulled off the roles that the story needed very well. My eye was always on Gary Oldman. The Dreyfus guy. Yes, that’s right, Gary Oldman’s character has a name. And it’s Dreyfus. I’ll get to him in my spoiler review.
As I said earlier, Cesar is definitely established to be the main character in the first few scenes of the film. We see what he’s been up to since his escape from San Francisco and how much he’s grown intellectually. I’ll have to say that I’m very impressed with the realistic direction that this reboot decided to go in. And when I say realistic, I’m not talking about the CGI play-dough apes. I’m talking about the fact that they resemble real apes, and not humanoid apes. It’s interesting to see how apes might behave had they higher intelligence. However, this is more of a tension movie than it is an action movie, if that is indeed what the posters are implying. Is it more the fear of the apes attacking than the apes themselves attacking. Nonetheless, this film is a big step up from the last one and absolutely kills it. However, it feels like more of a chapter than a film itself. When I look back and think on it, I’m not sure there was an awful lot that happened in it. I also feel like they could have picked a better spot in the eight years that had passed to film two hours of it for us to see. It felt sort of like a day in the times of the planet of the apes. That should really have been the title for this film. A Day in the Times of the Planet of the Apes. Nonetheless, it’s a damn good time, and probably one of the better films you’re going to see all year if you’re into sci-fi or whatever. Just remember, tension. Then action.

It contains all of the best elements from each film from the political undertones to the stunning special effects to outstanding action set pieces to strong likeable characters and a thrilling plot with Shakespearean ambitions.

Ten years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes a deadly virus has ravaged human civilization wiping out large parts of humanity. The evolved apes are now living in woods in San Francisco, led by Caesar, who now has his own son Blue Eyes. There is hostility after they stumble across a group of humans on their land but it’s revealed that the humans don’t want trouble, they are only looking to repair a hydroelectric dam to restore power to their city for the survivors. Caesar let’s them work on repairing the dam but his lieutenant Koba doesn’t trust humans and wants a war against mankind.

There was scepticism towards this sequel as the director Rupert Wyatt had left the project and main actor James Franco wouldn’t be returning. “Cloverfield” director Matt Reeves was hired to take over the film. Although the director had changed, the sequel was similar in tone and style while also successful building on the lore and character development from the original.

The characters of Caesar and Koba, and their relationship, is dead-centre in this story. Caesar’s character is more full and developed as he becomes more intelligent and interesting. The side story with his partner and son also gives him more depth and relatability. Koba’s character actually goes through the largest character arc. From having a small role in Rise, the seeds were planted when you see him being tested on and tortured by humans. But in Dawn he becomes more vengeful towards mankind and actually has a highly emotional scene pointing out his facial scars to Caesar and declaring it was “Human work!”.

The visuals and special effects are both striking with Matt Reeves having a great eye for impactful imagery. The fortress the apes live in is a sight to behold and looks like something out of a Kurosawa film. The motion capture special effects have also been improved with the apes looking more realistic than ever, the scenes with the apes interacting with each other are seamless. The special effects are arguably some of the best use of CGI ever created.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was proof that audiences still liked intelligent blockbusters. Beating the box-office of its predecessor while also receiving more favourable reviews from film critics. With a thoughtful story, full of extremely powerful moments and backed by great characters, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes eclipsed the idea of a ‘Summer-Blockbuster’.

It lacks in pure acting ability, but that is strictly reserved for the poorly cast human characters. The apes are portrayed, acted and integrated into the world with seamless precision, allowing for the needed suspension of disbelief.

The story is quite familiar, but also refreshing, a turn of events that the first film in the rebooted franchise doesn't foreshadow. With humanity seemingly at a moment of extreme crisis the world over, Caesar, the original ape who developed increased intelligence and who became the leader of his kind, has led his people into the thick forests of California to establish a home. The entire film centers around the interaction between a small colony of humans and Caesar's tribal apes.

It all progress with fantastic tempo, the pacing only surpassed by the anticipation it builds in the viewer. "What's going to happen?" is a question many movies attempt to have the viewer ask themselves, but only the minority actually succeed at. This film is in that excellent minority.

The only flaws, to my eyes, were as I said: the humans. Gary Oldman, despite being casted in a type of role I've always felt he was suited for, is underutilized in comparison to certain other people. These others, a mixed bag of performances, are mostly overshadowed and at times insignificant to the apes themselves. Perhaps this was inevitable when considering the story, but I do feel that more could have been done to provide a more balanced and engaging human colony in terms of casting and performance.

In the end, I got my money's worth and then some, with only the smallest complaint to offer. Now, my opinion may be more favorable to the reboot as I am one of those who have never seen the originals (shocking, I know), but I can't imagine this film or the last doing any disservice to the classics of the past. Worth the price of admission, and shines well above your average summer blockbuster fare.

Although it does succeed overall, it needlessly suffers from a couple of cringe-worthy moments and cliched sub-plots. There are a few unnecessary characters which could have easily been cut out from the entire movie in order to have a more compact narrative.
But I have to compliment the audacity shown by director Matt Reeves. He feels no shame or discomfort in telling a story with talking apes riding horses. He has put his heart and soul into the picture (as has everyone) and you have to admire that attitude. He's not crafted just an entertaining blockbuster, but rather a very intimate and intelligent film, clearly inspired by Shakespeare's Henry V, that manages to touch on deep fears, traumas, fantasies and hopes. It's flawed but it works.

Prior to watching this: I've seen the previous film (Rise),and the first two of the original films in the 60/70's. I've not read the novel(s?) nor seen the Tim Burton reboot.

Pros: Good facial capture CGI and relatively good story. Cons: 1. There were slow pacings at a couple of times where the director wanted us to get more emotionally attached to the apes and to the good humans - it didn't work on me and it made me look at my watch about 3 times.
2. Some of the bad humans behaved rather stupidly and illogically which is a sign that the script was inadequate at character development and at explaining why the characters had decided to act in the way they did.
3. I also think the apes have been portrayed as being far too smart at certain times to the point of being able to come up with complex plans. This level of complexity took humans several thousands of years to develop and only the smartest of us are capable of it. It just made the plot unrealistic. The first film (Rise) had the right amount of stretching the reality. This film went too far.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is fantastic. I strongly urge you to see it.

There, that was the super short version of the review. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes transcends the universe in which it is set and enters into a broader discussion of war, diplomacy, survival and power. You could replace the apes in this film with Native Americans and whites in colonial times, Moors and Christians in medieval times and so on and you would experience the same powerful film.

The story occurs ten years after a plague unleashed by the experiment that create Caesar, the aptly named leader of the Apes, has destroyed most of humanity. The story centers around a small colony of human survivors and their interactions with the now thriving Ape colony led by Caesar.

The film opens with a well-crafted scene that shows the "humanity" of the apes and providing an immediate connection to the humans and yourself. The apes seek the same things humans do: security, love, peace and survival. However, when one of the humans from the colony stumbles upon, Ash, the friend of Caesar's son, seeds of discord are planted. In his fear he shoots without being threatened. Caesar intervenes and prevents the Apes from killing the small party of survivors who went into the woods in the hopes of restoring power to San Francisco by repairing a dam.

What ensues is a brilliant work of escalation of a conflict that is mots similarly analogized to WWI. The apes appear in San Francisco in force, terrifying the inhabitants. The humans respond by dispatching a small diplomatic contingent, but also opening and testing a massive arsenal in case of an ape attack.

It is at this point that the film-making hits it's peak. The diplomatic band and Caesar's loyal and more open-minded apes clumsily interact with each other. Tensions are high and nearly capitulate into death when one of the party, who holds a hatred for all things "sub-human" defies Caesar and retains his gun. All survive and the uneasy peace is maintained. The humans are allowed to stay and to continue work on the dam only because they provide medicine which saves the life of Caesar's queen. These interactions are indicative of broader themes present in colonialism, but without the western-superiority. The exchange of medicine and technology to a more "primitive", coupled with the assistance on the natives in a harsh environment. They show a burgeoning trust between two uneasy people and how mere exposure can reveal the humanity present within vastly divergent cultures. This culminates in an exchange between the teenage son of the colonist and Maurice, an Orangutan who is another trusted confidant of Caesar, where the boy reads a comic to Maurice because of Maurice's curiosity. The fact that these scenes involve humans and apes, literally different species, makes the message of exposure and coming to common understanding all the more powerful.

However, simultaneously, Kato, Caesar's chief lieutenant, an Apes tortured and abused by humans, scouts the human colony where he discovers the humans preparing for an attack. Blinded by both hate and fear, he believes that Caesar's indulgence of the humans is setting the apes up for destruction. He is furious when he sees apes fighting humans. He fights Caesar in a dominance battle and loses, badly. Still believing that the apes are in danger, he takes a drastic action. He sets the ape village on fire and steals human weapons, a sniper rifle of which he uses to shoot Caesar.

Here is where the WWI allegory becomes strongest. Europe prior to 1914 was a powder-keg, a continuous place of escalation and distrust where all it would take is one powerful act to unleash devastating war. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the spark needed and with Caesar shot and the village burning war was inevitable.

Kato leads an attack, which through some impressive juxtaposition and well-shot battle scenes, highlights the uselessness and destruction war can bring. Upon ceasing power, Kato is revealed not to be as noble as believed, not precisely Brutus and he goes mad with his new found power, breaking the ultimate tenant of apes do not kill apes. The film parlays this by showing the corrupting effect that access to vast stores of weapons can have upon a person or nation.

Kato is defeated by a rejuvenated Caesar in the end, but as he and the colonist leader stand in the ashes of the colony, they both realize that just like after Ferdinand's death, war is inevitable, that neither side can forgive or forget. In making this comment the film brings it's ultimate message: destruction begets destruction. Security through violence cannot be achieved. It is a message that can be applied to so many different conflicts, most notably now, the Middle East and places such as Iraq or Gaza.

Aside from the depth of the film, I just want to comment that the CGI is incredible and whoever did the special effects most certainly deserves the Oscar. It's a remarkable technical achievement
