“You're always sorry, Charles. And there's always a speech. But nobody cares!”

Yikes.

‘Dark Phoenix’ ends with a flicker rather than a bang. It’s quite depressing that a franchise that basically breathed life into the superhero genre that we know today sadly stopped caring.

Despite everybody desperately holding on for hope that ‘Dark Phoenix’ would be a solid exist, I was the complete opposite - the evidence being in the development stages. Some have argued that “People have already made up their mind about this film before it’s been released, they want to hate it”, mm...no. This movie has been pushed back three times, a first time director Simon Kinberg, the test screenings was called “disastrous”, and the lack of interest the cast had towards the project.

Even the clips realised for the movie either looked atrocious or absolute cringe, especially the Mystique “Change the Name to X-Women” scene. Like, you’re addressing this to a guy (Professor X) who lost the use of his legs by saving the world, lost his friend to differing opinions, uses his fortune to construct a school for helping mutants, and creates a team to help protect humanity.

Anywhere, ‘Dark Phoenix’ is far from being worst in the series, but it’s the most dull and forgettable entry in the series, which is much worst in my point of view.

James Mcavoy and Michael Fassbender being the saving grace isn’t anything new, yet needs repeating with every entry despite their characters conflict being repetitive. Sophie Turner is fine as Jean Grey, but Turner truly shines whenever Jean is in shock and confused. Jennifer Lawrence, on the other hand, easily the weakest link as it’s never been so transparent for any actor to not give a damn. She was really bad. The Mystique make-up looks so bad and cheap for some reason. I’m guessing Lawrence didn’t want to go through the torture make-up process...well, tough sh*t. You’re being paid billions to star in these movies and the make-up being accurate to the character. If you don’t like it then leave. Jessica Chastain is fantastic as s̶k̶r̶u̶l̶l̶ Grace Randolph.

It seems like the dialogue really took a nosedive with this franchise. I mean every line being delivered by the cast felt stiff and stilted.

Also with this movie being set in 1992, it’s confusing to know that in 8 years time James Mcavoy will look like Patrick Stewart, and Michael Fassbender will look like Ian Mckellen. And don’t jump into the defense with the whole “set in the not too distant future” at the beginning of the first ‘X-men’ movie, because with the timeline being so f**ked up, it still doesn’t make it clear where anything is set. I find it extra confusing with this movie set 30 years after the events of ‘First Class’, yet the characters have barely aged during the intervening years. They could’ve easily put aging make-up on the actors to show a passing of time. I mean, sure it will look uncanny, but it’s better than not trying.

The visual effects looked questionable at best. The final battle lacked any suspense since I didn’t care about any of the characters. The cinematography and Simon Kinberg directing wasn’t anything special. I’ve seen the movie a few days ago and nothing is sticking with me in terms of memory. I can’t think of anything worst than being forgettable.

I find it alarming how a superhero movie coming out in 2019 can feel so outdated.

Overall rating: Mr Feige will like to see you now.

My favorite character was beast/hank (played by Nicholas Hoult); he had a very compelling story-line within the movie, and Nicholas did an awesome job in the role. But Sofia Turner was not bad either; Dark Phoenix/Jean Grey was a complex role, and I feel Sofia rose to the challenge. Overall, I enjoyed watching Dark Phoenix, and would definitely recommend it. Simon Kinberg's "Dark Phoenix" sure isn't the finest comic book movie I've ever seen, but the worst of the entire X-Men franchise? I guess I wasn't aware of the sheer enjoyment fans drew from the unsung cinematic classic that was "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," but I digress. The character work is a bit of a mess at times and -- yes -- there are a few cringe-inducing lines and ideas for scenes. But the overall product was watchable, mostly straightforward, occasionally well-done and just enough of a success for me to stay on board with Fox's X-men franchise for future installments. Oh, wait. . .never mind. Rest in peace, 20th Century Fox. Again, this may not have been the worthiest effort from the X-men producers in question, but after seeing it, I can't say I would've minded following them through semi-rough patch they entered. I guess that won't be happening though. Expand

There is very little to remember about this movie and again this is disappointing to say when these X-Men movies from Fox usually have a rich storyline look at First Class or Days of Future past amazing storytelling even Apocalypse which was just an okay movie had a decent storyline. The story was just not interesting and compelling enough, it was just so mediocre and forgettable.

There was with weird plot thread though involving Charles Xavier that I wasn’t buying at all. Without saying too much the plot point was about Charles Xavier was always the bad guy in these X-Men movies and he has a massive ego that puts everyone in danger, to be fair there were moments in the movie that made you consider that a bit but when you think of the Past X-Men movies and all he has done for the X-Men it just makes zero sense, I’m all for character evolutions but this “twist” they were going for didn’t work and almost contradicted the story involving Charles in other movies. Also the performances, I really can’t say much about the performances which again is disappointing because the cast in this movie is really good there were great performances from James McAvoy(Charles Xavier) and Micheal Fassbender(Magneto) in all X-Men movies they were involved in ,but here they just gave okay performances like there isn’t one scene were I can recall an outstanding performance from anyone from the cast members. The X-Men were fine,Mystique was just there and Quicksilver was wasted, the best part about the recent X-Men movies was wasted, well done movie.

The villains were bad and I don’t mean Jean Grey I mean the actual villains that were in this movie were extremely forgettable there was a particular motivation for the villains but it was never expanded on and the villains fell very flat, Jessica Chastain who played one of the villains gave a very bleak performance with was supposed to make the villains menacing and cold but came off as dry and the movie didn’t seem explore all the necessary features of these villains for them to be interesting or compelling.

Okay the stuff I liked was the action in the closing 2nd and last act was good, I usually don’t recall the First Class series for its action scenes but Dark Phoenix had really good actions scenes and probably some of the best action scenes in all of the X-Men movies, almost every one of the X-Men that were involved in the fight scenes looked cool I have never seen Cyclops in a good action scenes in these X-Men movies but Dark Phoenix did it also Storm looked cool and Magneto always does something impressive in these movies. Also the music was decent as well, Hans Zimmer who composed the music did a fine job with the theme music especially some of the action.I know I said there wasn’t an overall great performance from Dark Phoenix but there wasn’t any terrible one either and Charles Xavier was the most compelling character of all of the characters with the story involved.

Lets talk about Jean Grey or Phoenix who the story is based on, this time they tried again and they just can’t seem to get this Phoenix story right. the story is not too different from X-Men 3 Except dark Phoenix is centered around Jean this time and there are no subplots like in X-Men 3 to slow down the plot. Sophie Turner did the best she could with the story that was there this Jean unlike in X-Men 3 didn’t have a split personality where by there was a good Jean and an Evil Jean, Dark Phoenix’s Jean was more overwhelmed with all the powers she had and didn’t know how to control her powers so and this lead to her freaking out most of the time and losing control of herself and her powers, was this the best way to reintroduce the Dark Phoenix story, no not at all. However the Jean Grey character had a very cool showcase of her powers at end of the movie.

The First act was decent it introduced the characters nicely and the plot quickly but after that the movie was just slow and dry especially in the 2nd act were the villains started to show up but didn’t really improve much then the third act with was the best part of the movie with exciting action and the epic moments that were supposed to happen as well as dramatic moments fell flat as well.

Look did i think this movie was bad , no it’s not bad at all it’s not Fan4stic or Batman and Robin but at this stage this type of movie isn’t good enough Fox hasn’t made a really good X-Men movie until Days of Future Past(excluding Logan), Apocalypse was okay and Dark Phoenix is just so mediocre and rather lazy. If this is the last X-Men movie with this cast then I’m really glad Fist Class and Days of Future Past were made but Dark Phoenix was not the end I had hoped for.

I had a good deal of fun with the final moving train fight sequences. The villains, Jessica Chastain as Vuk and Ato Essandoh (the black guy) as villain Jones are given more to do than in most films. Both are strong. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, all perform with admirable conviction and gusto. Given what Sinmon Kinberg had to go thru to get this made, this speaks volumes for his integrity, perseverance and craft. I agree with James Kendrick of Q Network Film Desk: "It works on its own terms and deserves neither the critical scorn nor audience apathy it has received." Not quite a "spiritual movie" taken down by aggressive negative reviewers, this is a good effort likely to rise in estimation in years to come. Expand

Okay, maybe I'm laying it on a bit thick. (I really wanted to say the line.) Dark Phoenix is a movie that is not particularly bad or good.

There are several plot issues. The movie tries to get away from the more action-oriented and not well critically received X-Men: Apocalypse by being more dialogue and story heavy. This leaves a lot of long scenes of talking that aren't particularly dynamic. Not to mention that the action scenes are too few and far apart. Other plot problems include: Characters make decisions that fit the plot more than feel natural. The villains, beside Dark Phoenix (Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner), just feel really wedged in without any personality. There is also a scene with them at the beginning that is the darkest and of the franchise and felt like it didn't need to go that far. An issue in the film is resolved without any real explanation.

It may be obvious at this point, but there are the two prerequisite issues that everyone has mentioned: 1) Conflicts with the time line of the other films. The last film suggested and The Last Stand stated that Jean Grey's Phoenix powers came from within, but now they come from an outside force. 2) Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender needed at least a little old age makeup. We were first introduced to the characters in the 1960's and now it's the 90's. Hoult's baby-face really doesn't help.

A lot of actors sleepwalk through their roles. In the case of Hoult and Kodi Smit-McPhee, they only seem to be energized when their characters are angry. Though more effort is made to focus on the individual X-Men, some of them still don't get to do much.

As for the parts that do work: You get to see the characters go into space. The current state of human-mutant relations has made an interesting change, and that part of the world steels feel like it has stakes after all these films. Character relations are improved from Age of Apocalypse.

Turner, McAvoy, and Fassbender are the only actors to give good performances. Since we only met the new Jean Grey/Phoenix (Turner) in the last film, I was worried that they didn't have enough to adequately and sympathetically to show her shift from an enemy to a threat in a short amount of time. However, Turner really sells the role. We really feel her pain and anger. We get to see more moral grayness to McAvoy's Professor Xavier. In the last film, I thought Fassbender's Magneto felt forced in. Even if he did have the best scene in the film. Here he works a lot better.

No complaints about the fight scenes. Excellently done. The general look and music are pretty good too.

I'd rank this above Wolverine: X-Men Origins and below the other films. I know a lot of critics are saying this is better than it's predecessor, but for me Apocalypse at least had energy to it. This film just feels languid. If you're an X-Men completionist, go right ahead. This isn't a stinker. However for everyone else, this isn't a must-see.

IMO this movie has been rated very very unfairly. The story of X-men has always been complex, poignant and thought-provoking:

It is about a community of mortals, gifted/cursed with superpowers, who struggle with emotions, morality and difficult choices just like ourselves. These mutants only want to live in harmony and be well-balanced just like our multi-racial reality. I think this movie brings out these ideas very well! I really appreciate how the movie spotlights the characters, even Professor X who has the best of intentions, as imperfect. It makes us question whether the choices we made in our lives are always “for the best”.

It is also about friendship and family, how this two things shape a person’s life more than societal norms or what is currently acceptable.

The action is just right. Not overly fanciful and unnecessary. I do agree that the characters could have been given more lines and the younger actors could have performed better but it doesn’t warrant such a low rating!

I like the poignant ending, it is fitting for this series! Only those who have watched all the X-men movies will understand it.

I know many superhero movies are all about the action, fun and coolness, hence if you watch this movie with that in mind then you will not be able to appreciate it fully.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into it with the attitude of "I'll take it for what it is as a comic book fan just to say I watched it". I was extremely entertained which turned into excitement. It seems people are projecting their expectations onto the characters (which is ironic considering the core motivation of the movie). There are those that are confused by the time-line. There happens to be another marvel movie recently released that made trillions but still confused people with the time-line. No, the dialogue was not painful. From the beginning, Raven sounded awkward when talking to others. But her character disagreed with the direction the x-men were going and, inside, she questioned the things they were doing. It was meant to be awkward (how do you feel talking to a mother-in-law you don't agree with?). There are those that said magneto could have shown more development. He completely changed who he was, came to peace with it, and does basically what Charles does at the permission of the US government. I'm perplexed at those complaints. What got me excited was how true-to-the-comics the characters became. ProfessorX showed his villain side. If anything, this movie held back on what Charles did in his selfish pursuit. Beast went full beast mode clawing people up. He shreaded people in the comics. Nightcrawler FINALLY started using his tail to kill poeple. Thats his signature move. Transporting people to their deaths then transporting away. It was beautiful. Seeing the Phoenix develop into her final form at the end was perfect. Anyway, it was very enjoyable and I'll watch again. Expand

There is a seductive beauty to every scene and I found all character motivations convincing. Especially, the socio-political subtext is timely and very well done. in a nutshell: access for minorities is only granted through politics of respectability. The action set pieces are also probably the best the series had so far. The X-Men finally fight as a team.

Unfortunately, some scenes felt quite rushed and I wished the movie would have been longer. I do not understand why the length is so short. Jessica Chastain's character is the weakest link and underused. But all in all Dark Phoenix surprisingly became one of my favorite X-Men movies and is close behind X-Men 2, Days of Future Past, & Logan in my ranking. I am very irritated why so many critics online feel the need for articulating such harsh and hyperbolic reactions.

Went into this expecting something terrible. Instead I was thoroughly entertained. The tone of this film is fantastic from the get-go.

The action scenes were phenomenal. I often found myself captivated in the fight scenes and really feeling the effects of them. Some neat angles as well and cinematic flair that I thought really brought out the grit in the movie.

Story wise- no comment. I grew up reading blue and gold generation x-men so all this phoenix stuff is unknown to me. However, a lot of the psychology of the characters in this film did remind me of that era. I enjoyed that. So I went into this hearing some criticism of Sophie Turner not being the greatest. I was waiting and ready for that, but in my opinion I would disagree. I saw a wide range of emotion, and seriousness to her. I liked it.

I am so happy I went and saw this. Great movie to watch in theater (dbox was actually a fun experience for a change). I can honestly say I enjoyed this quite a bit more than the majority of recent comic book based films.

Nothing wrong with its cast though, as they brought their A game into the proceedings. Despite the excellent first 15 minutes, the flick meanders and ends up retreading the same story points as Last Stand, albeit remixed..sometimes for the worst. Having the third act reshot is another nail in the coffin. Despite some pretty good action set pieces, the whole film is underwhelming. Writer Director Simon Kinberg actually took responsibility for this film flopping in the cinemas, and I have to agree with him. He brought absolutely nothing new to the table. The fact that the head honchos at Fox would gave him $200 million for this 'reboot / remake' is mind boggling. This sort of decision making is probably why Fox is swallowed by the Disney juggernaut. Let's see what Feige and Co. will do to this property in the MCU. Expand

And it certainly doesn't help that Apocalypse did such a terrible job at setting up this film because that was yet another poorly written X-Men film.

Dark Phoenix should just be ignored, Pretend it doesn't exist. You are better off. And no, I don't blame the cast for it failing. You can only do so much with an awful script.

Dark Phoenix is a disappointing end to 20th Century Fox's X-Men movie franchise.

I really like the MacAvoy/Fassbender-led series of movies (even Apocalypse), but Dark Phoenix is a let down. They tried so hard to adapt the Dark Phoenix saga (which was ruined in 2005's The Last Stand) that they produced a boring movie. I always thought Sophie Turner was miscast as Jean Gray and this movie proves my point. The Genosha island finally appears in a movie but it amounts to nothing. The D'Bari aliens appearing in the movie are of little importance. In contrast with reviews though, I didn't find the actors' performances as soulless or bad. It was just a troubled project from beginning to end, so much that the film's entire 3rd act had to be reshot. Blame it all to an inexperienced director debuting with a big production and messing it up. Dark Phoenix isn't as bad as reviewers say, but it's no good either.

Farewell to McAvoy, Fassbender and Co. as the X-Men franchise returns to Marvel. But it will be years before the new X-Men appear in the MCU.

I'm giving it a 10, because I'm a fan of the x-men and been a fan of the franchise for a few time now, but technically speaking would give 85 in 100, the visual effects, God, they were stunning, the soundtrack good, no major plot holes that ruin the movie soo bad, the movie it's rather entertaining, it should be a little longer to explain some things but it really doesn't matter. The final battle gave me some chills and I kind fell for Jean character, unlike the critics said. It's not endgame, not near, but for the franchise it delivers what's promised, not the worst of the x-men movies but not the best too. Just watch it, don't judge it before you see it and don't expect the best movie ever, just rather a good movie, entertaining and with good soundtrack. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Second watch: Dark Phoenix is an average movie. The story approached the alien perspective in a very robotic manner. There is almost no real feelings of the relation of Jean Grey with the other X-Men. It makes all the emotions a very bland affair because of the structure in the story. And you abandon Quicksilver at 1/3 into the movie with barely no explanation ? What a bad move! The death of Raven completely falls flat and is a copy of Logan's death (thank you for the originality). It was presented in a very casual way and felt so forced. They exploited the main character of this movie very poorly and because of that, the main actress doesn't have any range into her character. The humor is just gone. Virtually no jokes in this movie. The soundtrack was made for another movie. It's a mix of Annihilation and Interstellar, and it just don't fit into this movie. It is extremely distracting. And the incessant music kills this movie. There is virtually no pauses to the long succession of tunes. Until the music stop (once, in a New York scene with professor X), the movie become more interesting. The fight in the ending with the train and aliens is quite amazing. And the FX are well done in general. I give it a 48%. There was a promising story somewhere but not within this structure. The story and the film seems like a resume of many seasons of a TV shows. And this is frustrating...I felt like they scrapped half the movie, and shorthanded a lot of things. Expand

So, even without knowing much about the characters or their fictional stories, I decided to watch the X-Men franchise films. This decision was followed by some reading about the characters and the films. I tried to follow more or less the chronological sequence of events starting with prequels.

This film is set in 1992 and begins with a call from the US President to help the space shuttle, in serious difficulties on a routine mission. During this X-Men operation, Jean Gray is caught in the middle of a strange cosmic storm that luckily does not kill her. Back on Earth, Jean will gradually develop feelings of confusion and unrestrained inner anger that quickly concern everyone, especially Xavier, who, in the face of the facts, decides to reveal her family origins, the way she caused her mother's death and how her father abdicated from her. Lost, enraged, feeling cheated and betrayed by all those she trusted, Jean sets out on a lonely search for herself, eventually finding her own dark side.

Bryan Singer's departure allowed Simon Kinberg to assume the director's chair and the screenwriter's pen. However, the loss of quality is so remarkable that I cannot consider this switch positive. Anyway, the bad box office results and the brouhaha among specialized critics underline my opinion. The film has a pleasant pace and was well mixed and edited, but it disappoints us because of its uninteresting, unrealistic and uninspired script, which seems to fetch some elements from older films like "Last Stand" and "Origins" instead of giving us really new stuff. With no sense of humor, the film has less action than the previous ones, despite being well done and truly intense. It also has endless loads of clichés and melodrama, with some sentences worthy of a Mexican or Brazilian soap opera. Dialogues are truly mediocre and have some expendable moments of pure political correctness, like that sentence from Raven saying, with some sarcasm, that Xavier should change the team's name to "X-Woman" given the weight of women there. Personally, I never found the cosmic cloud story credible and that, for me, damaged the plot and the way how I adhered to it, including the final scenes, too over the top.

The cast is massively inherited from previous films and is composed of great actors, however the characters do not have the soul and profoundness they have had so far. James McAvoy is good, but doesn't seem to handle with the gray areas of his character's personality; Michael Fassbender is just average. Sophie Turner gave life to the protagonist, Jean Gray, but she was so dramatic that she sounds horribly bad all the time. Jennifer Lawrence did a positive job but was quickly put aside. Tye Sheridan couldn't have sounded more boring. The villain, Jessica Chastain, a very threatening and cold metamorph, never wins our attention and fear. The film also features ephemeral or uninteresting appearances by Evan Peters, Alexandra Shipp, Nicholas Hoult and Scott Shepherd.

In addition to these merits, the film has production values that should be highlighted. It's a Marvel movie and there are millions of dollars involved. It has a well done cinematography and decent editing, in addition to the best visual, sound and CGI effects that money could buy, and that transform some scenes into real video games: visually incredible but without any soul or sense of danger or emotion. As happened almost always in this franchise, the film has good sets and costumes. I think it is fair to also greet the makeup department and the soundtrack.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: -Really solid score.
-Some good acting bits such as during Beast’s conversation with Charles after Raven’s funeral for example.
-The final battle is admittedly pretty awesome.
-I really liked how they portrayed Scott and Jean’s relationship.

Cons:
-Magneto makes a lot of dumb desicions in this movie and Fassbender, while he does have some good scenes, is clearly only here for a paycheck.
-Mystique’s makeup is jarringly worse than in previous films.
-The opening scene alone has so many unanswered questions, like how does just attaching a rocket to the X-Jet allow it to go into space? Why can Jean breathe in space? Why is duct taping a space helmet to Nightcrawler’s head enough to allow him to breathe in space?
-Vuk is not a very compelling villain. -Jean herself feels unfocused, going from scared and afraid of what her powers might do in one scene to violent sociopath in the next.
-Professor X’s arc of getting over an ego he doesn’t have feels forced and was likely only added so James McAvoy could have more screen time seeing as he is the biggest name in the whole cast.
-After Jean kills Raven, Quicksilver is noticeably absent for the rest of the movie. I know he was injured in the fight, but it still feels like the writers just forgot about him.
-“X-Women”. I don’t even need to say anything else. That line was so forced it’s cringeworthy.
-You can tell the D'Bari were supposed to be Skrull’s but were changed late into production because of Captain Marvel using the Skrull’s.

Final Verdict: Dark Phoenix had some good moments, but it just has too many problems holding it back and since the next X-Men movie is going to be a reboot set in the MCU due to Disney acquiring Fox, there is honestly no reason to see this with how mediocre it is. A disappointingly weak ending to the Fox X-Men film franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. E-Value: 4
Acting: 7
Plot: 4

For the twelfth instalment in Fox’s X-Men series, Dark Phoenix is the second adaptation of Dark Phoenix Saga after 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. The difference between these two movies is this movie is set in the new timeline (due to the events of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past) while X-Men: The Last Stand was set in the original timeline. Due to the merger between Disney and Fox, this is officially the final X-Men movie but not the final movie in the franchise.

In the year of 1992, the X-Men are now recognised as heroes due to their heroic actions nine years ago during the events of X-Men: Apocalypse. The X-Men are sent to a rescue mission in space to save a group of astronauts whose space shuttle was damage by some kind of solar-like energy. They successfully rescue the astronauts but Jean Grey (Turner) is struck by the energy and absorb it to protect the X-Men’s space shuttle.

Thankfully, they are able to rescue Jean but her psychic powers have slowly grown strong after the rescue mission. As a result of her growing power, she accidently hurt her teammates and the other students during a party. She also regains her past memories that have been hidden from her. She goes to her childhood home to confront her father for some answers.

Fear of her new power and discovering the truth, Professor Charles Xavier (McAvoy) accompany the X-Men to confront her before she causes any trouble which may ruin the reputation of mutants. Meanwhile, Vuk (Chastain), who is the leader of a shape-shifting called D’Bari, is targeting Jean to steal the energy within her for her own unknown purposes.

The second attempt to adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga by Fox is once again a failure. Why is it failure? First, the plot of the movie is very badly written and seriously lacks character developments especially the main villain and the protagonists. Some of the well-known characters such as Cyclops and Storm lack screen time and they do not do anything much to develop the plot.

In addition to plot, the infamous continuity errors of this franchise continue to show up in this movie. If you have seen X-Men: Days of Future Past and Deadpool 2, you will notice the errors right away. It makes me wonder if the director or writers even watch the previous instalments before making this movie. The only good thing about this movie is the performance of Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult and the rest of the cast. However, their performances are not enough to save the quality of the movie.

If you think X-Men: The Last Stand is bad, then Dark Phoenix is way worse. It is very plain boring and nothing too exciting like the previous X-Men movies. As the final X-Men movie, the ending is rather anticlimactic and does not really deliver a perfect conclusion like 2017’s Logan. Now that Disney/Marvel regained the movie rights to X-Men and Deadpool including Fantastic Four, you got to wait for few years before X-Men ever show up again on the big screen.

Overall, MUCH BETTER than Apocalypse! Not as good as First Class, Days of Future Past or X-Men 1 or 2. So somewhere in the middle of the franchise.

Positives (+)
Dark Phoenix (Jean) fleshed out much better in this iteration
New Storm was hot, likeable, dope use of powers, sexy accent and hot!
Like showing flaws of Prof X - usually depicted as perfect
Dark Phoenix powers - felt like a real threat, skin cracking special effects, eyes
Action sequences
Nightcrawler - dope use of powers
Death of Mystique (finally!)
Hank depicted well - nice makeup
Darker take on characters
Jean's beautiful eyes (so hot)

Negatives (-)
Main villains seemed lame - especially lead female, powers unclear
Cyclops seemed lame, whiny bi***
Quicksilver not used enough
Costumes look too goofy
Phoenix creature CGI lame
No chemistry between Jean & Cyclops
Dreadlock guy was stupid
Mystique as leader of the X-Men was stupid

I had seen somewhat mixed opinions of this movie and none of them were really that great so I had some doubts about it. Anyway, the other day I sat down with the kids and watched it.

Far from the greatest X-Men movie but it’s not that bad either. It’s okayish.

The story is fairly decent and, as usual, the special effects (which is really why I watch these movies) is quite good actually. The characters are doing a decent enough job of their roles although none of them are really up to the standard Patrick Stewart brought to the franchise.

The biggest gripe I have with the movie is it’s incessant whining. Jean is quite cool when she get’s pissed off and shows off her powers pretty much stopping anything that gets thrown at her. However those good moments are overshadowed by both her and other characters going into whining mode every so often. And Hank is just a bloody annoying ****

I haven’t really read that many X-Men comics (didn’t have them in Sweden when I grew up) so I cannot say I know much about Jean’s real story in those. I noticed that a lot of people complained about the story in the movie not being “the right” one. Sure, when they take a known character and remakes him for no good reason that pisses me off as well but this is NOT a one star movie by any stretch of the imagination.

Overall I cannot say that I really felt disappointed having watched it. Not exactly overjoyed either but it made for a decent enough movie evening with the kids.

Just saw X-Men: Dark Phoenix it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be it was actually pretty enjoyable to watch but that could be due to my low expectations of the film (idk).

Some moments felt pretty man-bashing but I wasn't sure if that was me personally reading into them that way or if that was their intent (that x-women line was dumb for so many reasons).

Like there were **** tons of times where the men saved the women/ and other people (Logan when he went back in time etc, Quicksilver when he went to the X-Mansion to save all the students, Havok taking the blunt of the blast to save Charles, Darwin when he attempted to save Angel's dumb ass from joining Sebastian Shaw and died because of it, there are many, many more times where everyone saved each other's asses but no Mystique please only remember when the women do it because those were the only times that mattered).

But despite those few times I still did enjoy the movie and really didn't think it was that bad.

In this movie, nothing happens, it was just boring and painful to watch. Every character has nothing to do in this movie, no character has any believable motivation or personality (let's not even talk about the villain, how could they make a villain worse than Malekith or Steppenwolf, seriously, I had to look at the credits to even know its name). Horrible dialogue full of clichés. The editing is choppy and the visual effects look so bad at many points. And the makeup...Ignoring Mystique's obviously lazy makeup work, everyone else looks bad, like Nightcrawler and Beast. As I said noone has anything to do: Mystique and Quicksilver barely appear in the movie, and any other character that is not Magneto, Beast or Cyclops does literally nothing. The acting was so bad. Every actor is just there for a paycheck, noone seem interested in what they were doing (With Sophie Turner and, maybe Michael Fassbender being exceptions because they...tried. Not saying their performance was good but they tried). Once again critizing the screenplay: It is so confusing that for most of the movie I didn't know what was going on, or why did this character do this or anything.

The worst part of all is that this is the last X-Men movie (Yeah, New Mutants is coming, but I'm refering to the main series, also, I feel that New Mutants will be bad too). It is sooooo anticlimatic, it's the complete opposite of Endgame: Instead of being a great conclusion, with a great battle, an emotional death of an important character, with tons of fanservice, we get nothing of that. This is the worst X-Men movie and one of the worst I've seen in the year. It's a complete trainwreck. It doesn't get a 0 because at least I could watch it, a 0 is reserved for those movies that I can't even watch in a single viewing.

Quem escreve esses roteiros???

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Everyone should see this film a second time. It is so much better on the second screening (especially on an IMAX screen). I think the first time watching it can be a shock because it is such a different tone from other X-Men movies and it is so dark and serious that it almost seems one-note and disappointing. But on the second viewing I could appreciate the sublime tragic beauty of the film (especially thanks to Hans Zimmer's gorgeously haunting score). What I thought on first viewing was cliche dialogue, now on second viewing seems like economical, deep and meaningful dialogue. I even could appreciate the acting performances. Jessica Chastain's performance is actually really good. Notice the contrast between her human self and the alien replica self. Her emotionless cold performance fits her alien character's motives and makes her performance appropriately creepy. Jennifer Lawrence gives a fine performance (despite everyone saying that she's just phoning it in) It's actually quite good and honest and makes the story even more tragic. And Sophie Turner did a good job showing the emotional evolution of her character. On my first viewing I thought she was terrible and I even made a joke about her acting being more wooden than Jessica Chastain's alien character. But on second viewing, I take it back. Sophie did a great job. A lot of her acting was understated and internalized. What gets me about the negative reviews is that the people who love action complained about the first half of this film not having enough action in it and being more like a dramatic soap opera. But then other people complain about the third half having too much action. I think this film gives something for everyone and I really admire its three act structure of the story. The first act was like a philosophical sci-fi film. The second act was like a film noir. And the third act was like an action horror film. I liked how the whole third act and big finale sequence takes place at night. It fits with the title Dark Phoenix. Also, unlike other people who have complained about this abbreviated version of the Dark Phoenix saga, I would not have liked to see this story arc continue over three films. I think this film did a good enough job distilling down the themes to be appropriate for one film and to give the whole series a cautionary yet hopeful ending. It's just a shame that it had to be released after Avengers Endgame because that films was such a complex and triumphant masterpiece that it is a tough act to follow for any other superhero film. But try to view Dark Phoenix as a more psychological chamber piece and it becomes its own kind of masterpiece. Yes there are still the slight flaws that befall any superhero movie where magic powers are allowed to break all the rules of logic. But I was able to suspend my disbelief more during the 2nd screening than I was during the 1st screening. So I am hoping this film stands the test of time and becomes more liked as the dust settles and people have a chance to view it a 2nd time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 6.5/10. It's a decent film. Has emotional moment's and you get to connect with the characters. The film itself is small scale and grounded, which makes us feel for Jean and understand her as it is more focused on character drama but it gives it a vibe that feels as if this isn't an X-Men movie. The other X-Men are wasted in this movie. There are some good action scenes which are cleverly done and it wraps up this story for the X-MEN. The ending is quite generic and is a slight bummer due to the perfect conclusion of days of future past l. Score is great. Pacing is decent, it does feel rushed at points but this isn't hugely noticeable especially to fans. Villians aren't great and are generic but the phoenix force creates intrigue which is good to see.

Overall if your a comic book fan then I think you should see this. If you can pick up cheap tickets like discount Tuesday or 2 for 1s then it's definitely worth it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dark Phoenix movie is great!!! The visual effects are outstanding. I loved the villain, Vuk, who is the leader of the alien race D'Bari whose planet got destroyed by the Dark Phoenix in the comics(Jean Grey swallowed their sun's energy which resulted in their solar system being destroyed). Dark Phoenix is very different from another superhero movies as well as from the Last Stand where they also tried to make a movie about the Dark Phoenix. It has its unique style of a superhero movie that I really liked. Now it's my favorite marvel movie. This movie focuses on Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix, I'm glad I saw a movie about her because she is my favorite marvel character. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The general plot is around the X-men when they are in their younger years like X-men young adults. The movie takes place in the early 1990’s when a young Jean Gray founds out a few surprises concerning her past & decides to leave Professor X and his X-men. Before she leaves them she starts to change while the X-men are on a mission to save a NASA crew from a solar flare thus starting down the road to becoming the Dark Phoenix. Personally I was not as impressed with this X-men movie as when compared with the other X-men movies. The story didn’t seem as good and the plot seemed pretty weird concerning the aliens who seemed to possess humans and were after Jean Gray after she starts down the road to becoming the Dark Phoenix. Micheal Fassbender was as good as Magneto and tends to be a good actor in just about any role that he does. James McAvoy was also good as Professor X and his character had a few secrets that he preferred to keep to himself. By the end I was underwhelmed and wished for my money & 2 hours of my life back. My advice is don’t pay a cent to see this movie on DVD or at the movie theater. Wait for it to come to basic cable/ Netflix or old fashioned regular antenna TV. As for your time of losing 2 hours that you won’t get back unless you do have a time machine so it is buyer be aware. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Probably nothing is more important to mention about this movie than the fact that it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Sophie Turner starred in this role in order to slap Conan O’Brien in the face.

The entire marketing campaign leading up to its wide release would suggest that Dark Phoenix is a trainwreck, a remake of a really bad movie made by the SAME DIRECTOR 13 years ago that no one was expecting or asking for, that got shoved back four months from a quiet, sleepy release date in November of 2018 just before Oscar season with no real competitors because of a need for reshoots on account of the script was bad and then because it apparently so generic that it copied entire scenes from other superhero movies put out at the same time by its parent company (there’s another insane element to the delay of this film’s release where James Cameron kicked it into the jaws of summer in order to protect his project Alita that I find so cruel it’s almost funny). Director Kinberg admits that the end of Dark Phoenix looked a whole lot like Captain America: Winter Soldier in the way that the mutants had were pitted against one another, but also like Captain Marvel in the way the space scenes (and in the maybe clever future connection to the Marvel universe, but equally just lazily written shapeshifting Skrull-esque villains), but also a lot like Infinity Wars with her mini Snappening, which just leads you to wonder if they were conscious of how much their film looked like it had stayed up for an all-nighter and then just cribbed off of every Marvel movie made in the last eighteen months, why didn’t they change it?

The Hollywood Reporter also talks about how this film was never meant to be a summer blockbuster, but doesn’t mention it in the form of autopsy or eulogy for the film that could have been. It talks about Dark Phoenix as a film with humbler stakes, smaller scope, a corrective to the disaster of Apocalypse. Friend says that Apocalypse clumsily tried to phoenix Jean Gray in the final boss fight, which everyone promptly forgets in order to make this movie even possible. Matthew Vaughn, who’s been making the rounds for some of his future projects while the **** of criticism for this film really ramps up, pulled back the curtain a little on the reboot in order to show what could have been, his alternate story boarding of the franchise, his desire to recast Wolverine for a younger actor, quaint notes for an innocent time before X-Men had crossed the point of no return.

I can see the merits of both sides on the film. Much, much smarter people embrace the (un)canny legacy of the Dark Phoenix storyline and its retelling as an icon of female empowerment. At the same time, the ensemble cast feels at once past due and also distractingly new. Turner is only in her second film in the franchise, whereas Lawrence, Fassbender, and MacAvoy have been in three or four, right? The effect is one of the unrequited familiarity of a distant relative comforting the orphaned child of the recently deceased at a funeral. Jean and Cyclops have a budding romance, but we’ve only really seen their chemistry over the span of about fifteen or twenty minutes before he–rudely–asks her to “Come back to me” like a wayward dog. Mystique gamely chides Prof X, “the women are always saving the men around here,” which leads one to momentarily wonder if that’s actually true or just what an X-Woman is supposed to say in 2019 to get a rise out of the Sad Puppies who are going to **** about this movie no matter what because it dares to tell a story from a woman’s perspective.

Most of my issues with the film are a lot pettier than the content... There’s a weirdly large amount of dialogue devoted to whether or not someone can read your mind: “I can’t read her mind now,” “turn up the power on my mind reading machine,” “she’s blocking my ability to read her mind,” “I didn’t need to read your mind,” “you’re not the only one who can read minds,” you get the point. And for a movie whose original intentions were to dramatize teenage angst about being queer, the sexuality of these stories is pretty hetero. Practically every man and woman is paired off. At times it seems like maybe there are too few women to fight over, so dudes magnanimously share one instead. Never thought something could make you nostalgic for anything Bryan Singer has ever done, but… no still no.

Watching this with my dad was a bittersweet end of an era, but not altogether unpleasant.... It’s strange to think about the random steps that end up defining the movies that make up your childhood, so I know that not everyone will enjoy this one, but if you’re of a certain age, and you remember your dad taking you to those first few films with Hallie Berry with all the cheesy special effects, it might bring some solace to return to this film to say goodbye.

The storytelling here was just so incredibly un-imaginitive that the movie and the actors couldn't help but give up. It's pretty clear in the first ten minutes of the film that everyone involved gave up.

It's fine to deviate from the source material as long as you're taking it in interesting new directions. Here they deviated from the source material in the most cliched way possible and the result was it just never grabbed the audience's interest to begin with. None of the actors were going to be able save it. Nothing was new and everyone was bored; The audience, the actors, the director, bored bored bored.

And I hate to say it but Sophie Turner just can't carry a movie herself. She was dreadful. She is better suited as a character actor in a fairly narrow range.
