The saga should not have existed at all, beginning and ending with the first chapter. Once accepted the opposite decision, the plot has been dusted off many times and often with a decent conclusion, but here we are in Disney house and therefore the family movie also dominates among the X-Men: "I know what I have to do now... protect my family". Enough, it's too much.

This was a boring, bland and forgettable X-men movie. The plot was boring and lifeless, the acting was just okay, and visually the movie looks cheap and occasionally overproduced. This made me lose all interest in Xmen as a franchise.

Nightcrawler enters full ass-kicking mode and it's just great. Unfortunately it's a second failed attempt to faithfully bring the Dark Phoenix story to the screen. It kind of borrows from all the right places for a bit before veering off on its own. It's not that it's bad, it's just derivative at best. By the time it's over, it leaves you feeling like it should have been way more than it was. It really never hits that crescendo you would want for the franchise.

Worth watching, could have been better. Sophie Turner's accent is fine.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this movie when I binge watched all the X-Men movies last year. I didn't understand what all the fuss was about. People seemed to really hate it, but I didn't mind it much. Recently I have begun reading the X-Men: Dark Phoenix graphic novel, and now I understand why. They should have just adapted the graphic novel into a movie and it could have easily become more successful than most MCU movies. But they those to write an original story, and that's not saying in a good way.

First of all, let's get the praise over with. The CGI and VFX of this movie are amazing. Now that I look back, it is literally the only reason why I liked this movie. The action scenes are also fun to watch. The story may be mediocre, but it's original nonetheless. They actually decided to do something new and unique. Unlike Days of the Future Past and First Class, they didn't use Wolverine for a cameo, so that's also something positive. The music was also pretty legendary. With all that said, now let's get to the critical part.

So the first problem this movie faces is the timeline. This is supposed to take place a little less than a decade before the incidents of the first movie. So the situation has to be more similar to that movie than, let's say, Apocalypse or Days of the Future Past. But here we have drastically young Charles Xavier and Magneto. Magneto has chosen to live in exile after his confrontation with the humans (don't ask which one). Mystique is with Charles and later gets killed by Dark Phoenix. So let's get this straight - Everyone aged immediately in 10 years, the government does not want to disturb mutants and then decides to target them again, Magneto goes back to being rogue and Mystique comes back to life?

Secondly the characters. Most of them looked like they were just brought for the sake of fan service, and were heavily wasted. Tell me, what did Quicksilver do in the entire movie other than yet another slow motion run in which he failed big time? Magneto was there only to be just another X-Man who will fight the bad guys (the question being what is Magneto even doing here; he wasn't in the Dark Phoenix saga). Mystique, like I mentioned, was just there to die. So was Jean's father. D'Bari replace the Hellfire Club here, even though they do almost the same thing. Charles Xavier gets whooped once again by Jean. Only Cyclops and Nightcrawler continue being themselves. Everyone else gets ruined.

Thirdly the story. Where do I begin from? This whole thing is one hige pool of mess. X-Men save the world, Jean absorbs the Dark Phoenix matter, slowly becomes Dark Phoenix, Mystique says the team should be X-Women, something something D'Bari get Jean, they attack a bank, now mutants are evil, Magneto takes Xavier's side, fighting fighting, the end. Congrats, the movie is complete. Now everyone bring your money and we will make more of these. What was the whole point of doing this? Why did they make this movie? What does it contribute to the franchise?

Personally I'm all in for the awesome CGI and cinematography. But considering this is supposed to be the last movie of the franchise, they should have done something better. Even the poster is a copy of Captain Marvel and Star Wars Episode IX. X-Men should have known when to stop. Or even better, they should have continued with a Deadpool movie series eventually separating from the main franchise. That would have been way more fun to watch than this... thing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. E-Value: 4
Acting: 7
Plot: 4

For the twelfth instalment in Fox’s X-Men series, Dark Phoenix is the second adaptation of Dark Phoenix Saga after 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. The difference between these two movies is this movie is set in the new timeline (due to the events of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past) while X-Men: The Last Stand was set in the original timeline. Due to the merger between Disney and Fox, this is officially the final X-Men movie but not the final movie in the franchise.

In the year of 1992, the X-Men are now recognised as heroes due to their heroic actions nine years ago during the events of X-Men: Apocalypse. The X-Men are sent to a rescue mission in space to save a group of astronauts whose space shuttle was damage by some kind of solar-like energy. They successfully rescue the astronauts but Jean Grey (Turner) is struck by the energy and absorb it to protect the X-Men’s space shuttle.

Thankfully, they are able to rescue Jean but her psychic powers have slowly grown strong after the rescue mission. As a result of her growing power, she accidently hurt her teammates and the other students during a party. She also regains her past memories that have been hidden from her. She goes to her childhood home to confront her father for some answers.

Fear of her new power and discovering the truth, Professor Charles Xavier (McAvoy) accompany the X-Men to confront her before she causes any trouble which may ruin the reputation of mutants. Meanwhile, Vuk (Chastain), who is the leader of a shape-shifting called D’Bari, is targeting Jean to steal the energy within her for her own unknown purposes.

The second attempt to adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga by Fox is once again a failure. Why is it failure? First, the plot of the movie is very badly written and seriously lacks character developments especially the main villain and the protagonists. Some of the well-known characters such as Cyclops and Storm lack screen time and they do not do anything much to develop the plot.

In addition to plot, the infamous continuity errors of this franchise continue to show up in this movie. If you have seen X-Men: Days of Future Past and Deadpool 2, you will notice the errors right away. It makes me wonder if the director or writers even watch the previous instalments before making this movie. The only good thing about this movie is the performance of Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult and the rest of the cast. However, their performances are not enough to save the quality of the movie.

If you think X-Men: The Last Stand is bad, then Dark Phoenix is way worse. It is very plain boring and nothing too exciting like the previous X-Men movies. As the final X-Men movie, the ending is rather anticlimactic and does not really deliver a perfect conclusion like 2017’s Logan. Now that Disney/Marvel regained the movie rights to X-Men and Deadpool including Fantastic Four, you got to wait for few years before X-Men ever show up again on the big screen.

So, even without knowing much about the characters or their fictional stories, I decided to watch the X-Men franchise films. This decision was followed by some reading about the characters and the films. I tried to follow more or less the chronological sequence of events starting with prequels.

This film is set in 1992 and begins with a call from the US President to help the space shuttle, in serious difficulties on a routine mission. During this X-Men operation, Jean Gray is caught in the middle of a strange cosmic storm that luckily does not kill her. Back on Earth, Jean will gradually develop feelings of confusion and unrestrained inner anger that quickly concern everyone, especially Xavier, who, in the face of the facts, decides to reveal her family origins, the way she caused her mother's death and how her father abdicated from her. Lost, enraged, feeling cheated and betrayed by all those she trusted, Jean sets out on a lonely search for herself, eventually finding her own dark side.

Bryan Singer's departure allowed Simon Kinberg to assume the director's chair and the screenwriter's pen. However, the loss of quality is so remarkable that I cannot consider this switch positive. Anyway, the bad box office results and the brouhaha among specialized critics underline my opinion. The film has a pleasant pace and was well mixed and edited, but it disappoints us because of its uninteresting, unrealistic and uninspired script, which seems to fetch some elements from older films like "Last Stand" and "Origins" instead of giving us really new stuff. With no sense of humor, the film has less action than the previous ones, despite being well done and truly intense. It also has endless loads of clichés and melodrama, with some sentences worthy of a Mexican or Brazilian soap opera. Dialogues are truly mediocre and have some expendable moments of pure political correctness, like that sentence from Raven saying, with some sarcasm, that Xavier should change the team's name to "X-Woman" given the weight of women there. Personally, I never found the cosmic cloud story credible and that, for me, damaged the plot and the way how I adhered to it, including the final scenes, too over the top.

The cast is massively inherited from previous films and is composed of great actors, however the characters do not have the soul and profoundness they have had so far. James McAvoy is good, but doesn't seem to handle with the gray areas of his character's personality; Michael Fassbender is just average. Sophie Turner gave life to the protagonist, Jean Gray, but she was so dramatic that she sounds horribly bad all the time. Jennifer Lawrence did a positive job but was quickly put aside. Tye Sheridan couldn't have sounded more boring. The villain, Jessica Chastain, a very threatening and cold metamorph, never wins our attention and fear. The film also features ephemeral or uninteresting appearances by Evan Peters, Alexandra Shipp, Nicholas Hoult and Scott Shepherd.

In addition to these merits, the film has production values that should be highlighted. It's a Marvel movie and there are millions of dollars involved. It has a well done cinematography and decent editing, in addition to the best visual, sound and CGI effects that money could buy, and that transform some scenes into real video games: visually incredible but without any soul or sense of danger or emotion. As happened almost always in this franchise, the film has good sets and costumes. I think it is fair to also greet the makeup department and the soundtrack.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh, man! Never thought an X-Men movie would be so f**king awful. .
.
Good : The ensemble cast. In particular James McAvoy. He really tries hard to save this movie. Some really short sequences were fine, just because it had Fassbender and McAvoy. And, that's all about that. .
.
Bad : HOLY F**KING S**T! I hate this movie. I F**KING HATE THIS MOVIE!!! Who the f**k greenlit this piece of s**t?!! The story doesn't make sense - if you can say it has a story. Everything is basically a f**king rehash of everything that was wrong with X-Men: The Last Stand. I mean what the f**k?! I have no real problem with the First Class cast not aging, I can simply enjoy the story, ignoring how they look. The major problem I had with this f**king s**t is that it f**king tries to retcon Days of Future Past and Logan, staying in the timeline set by DoFP. What's the f**king logic there? I mean, what was Simon Kinberg smoking when he was writing this monkey a$$ of a movie? DoFP was supposed to retcon the two s**t films - Last Stand and Origins, right? Why am I calling them s**t? They are f**king Citizen Kane and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly compared to this f**kery! This rat's a$$ of a film kills Raven, retconning the first two films! Alright, I can take that bulls**t. Then, it shows Professor X retiring, with Beast taking his position! What?!!! How does that hold up DoFP? That's a gigantic and the most unforgivable plothole that it generates. The opening sequence is something that a 10 year old can write, 200x better that is. Magneto is too forced, lacks a motive and changes his mind really quickly. He was introduced well with first three films, and had a really great arc in First Class. After that, there wasn't much to him. I didn't hate what he was in Apocalypse and DoFP, but this one is just bonkers! I, sort of, remember watching some storylines on Phoenix in the animated series, and it was better than this dumba$$ery. And that was a cartoon and obviously was cartoonish, but way less cartoonish than this blant f**kery! There are a lot of scenes taken from Last Stand and dumbed down at least 2 million times. Raven is human - Raven dies. There's a house to house action scene, which makes me like Last Stand even more. Phoenix gets killed - Phoenix gets pseudo-killed. Whole bunch of new mutants who serve zero purpose. I can go on and on. The dialogues are f**king cringe-worthy! "Since all the women are helping the men out here, better change the name to X-Women" or some d**k sauce of a line - that's in the movie man. Unbelievable! Also, all Beast does is give First Class references. Guess what, motherf**ker? First Class references don't make your s**thead of a film as great as First Class! Cyclops is a f**king dummy. His f bomb was a bomb that emitted laughing gas. Is there anything left? Nope. There's it, people. I summarized the entire monkey d**k of a movie. .
.
Conclusion : F**k this movie!!!! If you're an X-Men fan, stay away from this suck-a$$ery of a cringe-fest. .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is atrocious and is by far the worst x-men movie. The McAvoy/Fassbender x-men movies were my favourites and I enjoyed all of them with the exception of this one. The plot, dialogue, and acting were all bad and it felt like the movie was developed from a fanfic and not a very good one at that.

Professor X is meant to be one of the greatest minds however this movie totally destroyed his character by making us believe that he thought suppressing Jean's memories and actually lying to her was good for her mental wellbeing. This is just a plot contrivance to make us believe how easy it would be for her to lose control and become dark phoenix.

Another contrivance was when Raven died. It was so obvious and so poorly done that I felt absolutely nothing from the scene. Actually all the characters were bland and cardboard cutouts that I did not care one whit if anyone died. They did this so that Hank and Magneto would bond together and get revenge on Jean for her death. Then all of a sudden, Magneto changes his mind and decides not to kill her.

Jean, Magneto, and Storm are meant to be some of the most powerful mutants alive and yet they were easily subdued by what looked like a human swat team? That makes no sense. That means less powerful mutants like Cyclops (who is actually incredibly powerful) seem to be equivalent to a rent-a-cop.

The villains are even more bland as they have no backstory whatever beyond wanting to take over earth to repopulate their species. We have some great actors/actresses in this film (McAvoy, Fassbender, Lawrence, Hoult, Chastain) however they all appear average at best which I think is more to do with the directing than their acting chops.

The Dark Phoenix storyline is actually really hard to do well simply because she's so powerful and unlike Superman, she doesn't have a kryptonite for villains to take advantage of. She makes the most powerful mutants like Magneto and Storm look weak in comparison. I would've thought after the mistake in the first trilogy with Hugh Jackman and that awful Dark Phoenix storyline they would've stayed away.

This movie ruined a great franchise and I wished I never watched it. I'll just pretend this movie never happened.

Highly underrated movie that is way better than the first Phoenix saga attempt in X men Last Stand. I can see how some people hate it though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It boggles my mind that so many people are giving this movie such bad reviews and ratings. Personally loved it! The love story between Jean and Scott was phenomenal. They made the story and backgrounds to it perfect, but there could have been a little tweaks here and there. All in all perfect movie. At the end I do kinda want a little bit more explanation about Jean and where she went after send the alien and herself into space, and sacrificing herself to save everyone. I'm pushing for the next movie to come and and possibly bringing Jean back. I would love to see the love story between Scott and Jean continue. Expand

It was just bad. From the very beginning, I knew it would be awful and indeed it was. And it certainly doesn't help that Apocalypse did such a terrible job at setting up this film because that was yet another poorly written X-Men film.

Dark Phoenix should just be ignored, Pretend it doesn't exist. You are better off. And no, I don't blame the cast for it failing. You can only do so much with an awful script.

Granted The New Mutants will be the last X-Men Movie from 20th Century Fox, but this was the last installment in the mainline franchise. X-Men: Dark Phoenix was one of the greatest movies of 2019 in my opinion, I was more than impressed with the talent in this film and I thought it was a sad way to end the series, literally sad as in emotional. I’m happy they showed us the true potential of Dark Phoenix in this explosive finale! I’m very upset that this movie got panned for absolutely no reason at all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My gf thought plotline was a little weak but i saw her in suspense. Truth is i was captivated more. The sheer pressure of suppressed memories being able to generate such a destabilizing force it destroys yourself is familiar to me. The selflessness in the sacrifice made followed by the intense struggle, basically a life and death struggle, was almost impossible to turn away from. Seeing such a strong person struggle enhanced my respect for everyone going through the motions. My gf and I had a rough life and I'm sure we both learned something here. I can look past the aliens and see what they did here. The Phoenix that flew over Charles and magneto in the end gave me goosebumps. Although this movie seems to be criticized I saw some unique points of view in this movie that are achievements on it's own and therefore I give a solid 9. This chapter was welcome and necessary. I think many lessons are hidden in this movie, and in this day and age of superficial friendships this is the one that is able to add the depth human relations so often need. Great work, this movie is a sacrifice in itself Expand

How she appeared in old versions as a Rebecca Romijn!! Are they planning to produce X-Men: Endgame in the future!? I just feel that "Dark Phoenix" not related to X series.

In addition, I felt I was watching a "Captain Marvel" but with a different story, where Jean has almost the same power of Captain Marvel and the way that she gets the power it's almost same.

It's fine to deviate from the source material as long as you're taking it in interesting new directions. Here they deviated from the source material in the most cliched way possible and the result was it just never grabbed the audience's interest to begin with. None of the actors were going to be able save it. Nothing was new and everyone was bored; The audience, the actors, the director, bored bored bored.

And I hate to say it but Sophie Turner just can't carry a movie herself. She was dreadful. She is better suited as a character actor in a fairly narrow range.

Quem escreve esses roteiros???

The Stream: The movie is a bit predictable, lacks originality and the end leaves you a little empty.

The Big Screen: The movie looks great on the big screen particularly in action sequences.

The Final Bill: Being the end of an era, X-Men fans should catch it in the theaters and general watchers should watch the other movies first and then consider a matinee, if you have free time.

No after credit scene. Parents be warned that unlike the other 3 movies PG-13 is accurate with some language and violence towards the end.

-S2S

Stream to Big Screen is back at it again. This week we will be reviewing the long awaited, X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The fourth, and final, movie of this recent X-Men reboot. A movie marking a last for 21st Century Fox films with the X-Men due to the Disney/Marvel acquisition. The third movie of the series had mixed reviews but ultimately was very entertaining. Let’s see if Dark Phoenix arose from the ashes for one last flight.

Let’s dive deep into the ashes. I wouldn’t say that there are elements of this movie that are bad, just ones that were lacking. The movie is missing some minor detail that would lead you to say, “Oh, that right there was on point.” Even in the ending, the viewer just feels like the movie was good, but something was missing. I’m not sure what 21st Century Fox and director, Simon Kinberg, were thinking when they looked at the product as a whole. Looking back on it, the movie made you feel like when you pick up your cup expecting orange juice, but actually you picked up the wrong cup and drank apple juice. It’s still healthy for you and it quenched your thirst to a degree, but it wasn’t the taste you expected.

On top of that, this movie is too eerily similar to X-Men: The Last Stand. Too many elements of the movie made me feel as if I was watching a reboot of Last Stand rather than it’s own independent movie. No seriously, the plot was similar, except the stupid cure aspect. With that said, Dark Phoenix is actually a better version of Last Stand. This may be the reason why the movie feels like it’s lacking originality, but ultimately the movie is just too predictable on its own. This may also be because of the movie trailer. The movie trailer was very good, but also gives away too much. The movie did hide a couple secrets from the viewers, which were worth it, but again execution was lacking. Finally, the director let the movie live in flashbacks too much. An issue not too horrible, but we got the point of the flashbacks the first time we saw them. The 5th time was understood, but just too much.

Now, the part that you’ve been waiting for. This movie looks like they spent a $200 million budget. The scenes seem to literally jump off the screen at times. The scene that was in space look great and the action scenes are very clear and well cgi-ed, except for some running and flying. Unlike the previous installments, the movie’s action towards the end is closer to a John Wick film than X-Men. Quite welcomed, even though it’s short lived.

The storyline, while predictable, still was executed well, except the ending of the franchise. We take a ride with the X-Men every step of the way. Just like the movie jumps off the screen, so do the emotions we feel. Sansa, while not a great actress, displays a nice depiction of a person drinking in /falling prey to power, yet keeping true to who we’ve known her character to be. James McAvoy, again does a good job, but the movie missed an opportunity to truly use Michael Fassbender. Clearly, the producers were featuring the Queen of the North, but they could have still taken advantage of the star talent in the cast. Lastly, the movie has a little comedy in it, compared to the previous installments, but the few chuckles were good.

Long story short, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is a solid movie, but is just lacking a little in execution that would make you say it was a great movie. For fans of the series, you should see this through to the end and the action scenes will make it worth a matinee price. For everyone else, go check out the previous installments first, and then consider seeing the movie during an early matinee.

I had seen somewhat mixed opinions of this movie and none of them were really that great so I had some doubts about it. Anyway, the other day I sat down with the kids and watched it.

Far from the greatest X-Men movie but it’s not that bad either. It’s okayish.

The story is fairly decent and, as usual, the special effects (which is really why I watch these movies) is quite good actually. The characters are doing a decent enough job of their roles although none of them are really up to the standard Patrick Stewart brought to the franchise.

The biggest gripe I have with the movie is it’s incessant whining. Jean is quite cool when she get’s pissed off and shows off her powers pretty much stopping anything that gets thrown at her. However those good moments are overshadowed by both her and other characters going into whining mode every so often. And Hank is just a bloody annoying ****

I haven’t really read that many X-Men comics (didn’t have them in Sweden when I grew up) so I cannot say I know much about Jean’s real story in those. I noticed that a lot of people complained about the story in the movie not being “the right” one. Sure, when they take a known character and remakes him for no good reason that pisses me off as well but this is NOT a one star movie by any stretch of the imagination.

Overall I cannot say that I really felt disappointed having watched it. Not exactly overjoyed either but it made for a decent enough movie evening with the kids.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: -Really solid score.
-Some good acting bits such as during Beast’s conversation with Charles after Raven’s funeral for example.
-The final battle is admittedly pretty awesome.
-I really liked how they portrayed Scott and Jean’s relationship.

Cons:
-Magneto makes a lot of dumb desicions in this movie and Fassbender, while he does have some good scenes, is clearly only here for a paycheck.
-Mystique’s makeup is jarringly worse than in previous films.
-The opening scene alone has so many unanswered questions, like how does just attaching a rocket to the X-Jet allow it to go into space? Why can Jean breathe in space? Why is duct taping a space helmet to Nightcrawler’s head enough to allow him to breathe in space?
-Vuk is not a very compelling villain. -Jean herself feels unfocused, going from scared and afraid of what her powers might do in one scene to violent sociopath in the next.
-Professor X’s arc of getting over an ego he doesn’t have feels forced and was likely only added so James McAvoy could have more screen time seeing as he is the biggest name in the whole cast.
-After Jean kills Raven, Quicksilver is noticeably absent for the rest of the movie. I know he was injured in the fight, but it still feels like the writers just forgot about him.
-“X-Women”. I don’t even need to say anything else. That line was so forced it’s cringeworthy.
-You can tell the D'Bari were supposed to be Skrull’s but were changed late into production because of Captain Marvel using the Skrull’s.

Final Verdict: Dark Phoenix had some good moments, but it just has too many problems holding it back and since the next X-Men movie is going to be a reboot set in the MCU due to Disney acquiring Fox, there is honestly no reason to see this with how mediocre it is. A disappointingly weak ending to the Fox X-Men film franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Probably nothing is more important to mention about this movie than the fact that it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Sophie Turner starred in this role in order to slap Conan O’Brien in the face.

The entire marketing campaign leading up to its wide release would suggest that Dark Phoenix is a trainwreck, a remake of a really bad movie made by the SAME DIRECTOR 13 years ago that no one was expecting or asking for, that got shoved back four months from a quiet, sleepy release date in November of 2018 just before Oscar season with no real competitors because of a need for reshoots on account of the script was bad and then because it apparently so generic that it copied entire scenes from other superhero movies put out at the same time by its parent company (there’s another insane element to the delay of this film’s release where James Cameron kicked it into the jaws of summer in order to protect his project Alita that I find so cruel it’s almost funny). Director Kinberg admits that the end of Dark Phoenix looked a whole lot like Captain America: Winter Soldier in the way that the mutants had were pitted against one another, but also like Captain Marvel in the way the space scenes (and in the maybe clever future connection to the Marvel universe, but equally just lazily written shapeshifting Skrull-esque villains), but also a lot like Infinity Wars with her mini Snappening, which just leads you to wonder if they were conscious of how much their film looked like it had stayed up for an all-nighter and then just cribbed off of every Marvel movie made in the last eighteen months, why didn’t they change it?

The Hollywood Reporter also talks about how this film was never meant to be a summer blockbuster, but doesn’t mention it in the form of autopsy or eulogy for the film that could have been. It talks about Dark Phoenix as a film with humbler stakes, smaller scope, a corrective to the disaster of Apocalypse. Friend says that Apocalypse clumsily tried to phoenix Jean Gray in the final boss fight, which everyone promptly forgets in order to make this movie even possible. Matthew Vaughn, who’s been making the rounds for some of his future projects while the **** of criticism for this film really ramps up, pulled back the curtain a little on the reboot in order to show what could have been, his alternate story boarding of the franchise, his desire to recast Wolverine for a younger actor, quaint notes for an innocent time before X-Men had crossed the point of no return.

I can see the merits of both sides on the film. Much, much smarter people embrace the (un)canny legacy of the Dark Phoenix storyline and its retelling as an icon of female empowerment. At the same time, the ensemble cast feels at once past due and also distractingly new. Turner is only in her second film in the franchise, whereas Lawrence, Fassbender, and MacAvoy have been in three or four, right? The effect is one of the unrequited familiarity of a distant relative comforting the orphaned child of the recently deceased at a funeral. Jean and Cyclops have a budding romance, but we’ve only really seen their chemistry over the span of about fifteen or twenty minutes before he–rudely–asks her to “Come back to me” like a wayward dog. Mystique gamely chides Prof X, “the women are always saving the men around here,” which leads one to momentarily wonder if that’s actually true or just what an X-Woman is supposed to say in 2019 to get a rise out of the Sad Puppies who are going to **** about this movie no matter what because it dares to tell a story from a woman’s perspective.

Most of my issues with the film are a lot pettier than the content... There’s a weirdly large amount of dialogue devoted to whether or not someone can read your mind: “I can’t read her mind now,” “turn up the power on my mind reading machine,” “she’s blocking my ability to read her mind,” “I didn’t need to read your mind,” “you’re not the only one who can read minds,” you get the point. And for a movie whose original intentions were to dramatize teenage angst about being queer, the sexuality of these stories is pretty hetero. Practically every man and woman is paired off. At times it seems like maybe there are too few women to fight over, so dudes magnanimously share one instead. Never thought something could make you nostalgic for anything Bryan Singer has ever done, but… no still no.

Watching this with my dad was a bittersweet end of an era, but not altogether unpleasant.... It’s strange to think about the random steps that end up defining the movies that make up your childhood, so I know that not everyone will enjoy this one, but if you’re of a certain age, and you remember your dad taking you to those first few films with Hallie Berry with all the cheesy special effects, it might bring some solace to return to this film to say goodbye.

In this movie, nothing happens, it was just boring and painful to watch. Every character has nothing to do in this movie, no character has any believable motivation or personality (let's not even talk about the villain, how could they make a villain worse than Malekith or Steppenwolf, seriously, I had to look at the credits to even know its name). Horrible dialogue full of clichés. The editing is choppy and the visual effects look so bad at many points. And the makeup...Ignoring Mystique's obviously lazy makeup work, everyone else looks bad, like Nightcrawler and Beast. As I said noone has anything to do: Mystique and Quicksilver barely appear in the movie, and any other character that is not Magneto, Beast or Cyclops does literally nothing. The acting was so bad. Every actor is just there for a paycheck, noone seem interested in what they were doing (With Sophie Turner and, maybe Michael Fassbender being exceptions because they...tried. Not saying their performance was good but they tried). Once again critizing the screenplay: It is so confusing that for most of the movie I didn't know what was going on, or why did this character do this or anything.

The worst part of all is that this is the last X-Men movie (Yeah, New Mutants is coming, but I'm refering to the main series, also, I feel that New Mutants will be bad too). It is sooooo anticlimatic, it's the complete opposite of Endgame: Instead of being a great conclusion, with a great battle, an emotional death of an important character, with tons of fanservice, we get nothing of that. This is the worst X-Men movie and one of the worst I've seen in the year. It's a complete trainwreck. It doesn't get a 0 because at least I could watch it, a 0 is reserved for those movies that I can't even watch in a single viewing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Second watch: Dark Phoenix is an average movie. The story approached the alien perspective in a very robotic manner. There is almost no real feelings of the relation of Jean Grey with the other X-Men. It makes all the emotions a very bland affair because of the structure in the story. And you abandon Quicksilver at 1/3 into the movie with barely no explanation ? What a bad move! The death of Raven completely falls flat and is a copy of Logan's death (thank you for the originality). It was presented in a very casual way and felt so forced. They exploited the main character of this movie very poorly and because of that, the main actress doesn't have any range into her character. The humor is just gone. Virtually no jokes in this movie. The soundtrack was made for another movie. It's a mix of Annihilation and Interstellar, and it just don't fit into this movie. It is extremely distracting. And the incessant music kills this movie. There is virtually no pauses to the long succession of tunes. Until the music stop (once, in a New York scene with professor X), the movie become more interesting. The fight in the ending with the train and aliens is quite amazing. And the FX are well done in general. I give it a 48%. There was a promising story somewhere but not within this structure. The story and the film seems like a resume of many seasons of a TV shows. And this is frustrating...I felt like they scrapped half the movie, and shorthanded a lot of things. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The general plot is around the X-men when they are in their younger years like X-men young adults. The movie takes place in the early 1990’s when a young Jean Gray founds out a few surprises concerning her past & decides to leave Professor X and his X-men. Before she leaves them she starts to change while the X-men are on a mission to save a NASA crew from a solar flare thus starting down the road to becoming the Dark Phoenix. Personally I was not as impressed with this X-men movie as when compared with the other X-men movies. The story didn’t seem as good and the plot seemed pretty weird concerning the aliens who seemed to possess humans and were after Jean Gray after she starts down the road to becoming the Dark Phoenix. Micheal Fassbender was as good as Magneto and tends to be a good actor in just about any role that he does. James McAvoy was also good as Professor X and his character had a few secrets that he preferred to keep to himself. By the end I was underwhelmed and wished for my money & 2 hours of my life back. My advice is don’t pay a cent to see this movie on DVD or at the movie theater. Wait for it to come to basic cable/ Netflix or old fashioned regular antenna TV. As for your time of losing 2 hours that you won’t get back unless you do have a time machine so it is buyer be aware. Expand

X-Men Dark Phoenix vem após o despontante Apocalipse. Nesse seguimento foi com receio que olhei para esse filme e pelo visto com razão. Mas vamos por partes:

-Aspectos Positivos: Sinceramente praticamente nenhuns.

I expected much less than was delivered here - with all the reviews I'd read going in I expected some sort of feminazi disaster....I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed watching the journey. Some superb acting here and Simon Kinberg's pleasing direction means all the production goodness is up on the screen here. The emotional and action packed core of the film is present and solid with Sophie Turner delivering an excellent performance here as troubled mutant Jean Grey. The teenage me that grew up loving the animated xmen series was so happy watching this today!(was genuinely moved by the ending also!) So for all true x-fans who love seeing the trials and tribulations of those poor downtrodden uncanny mutants, ignore the hate and breathe in the x-goodness that is Dark Phoenix.

This is a beautiful movie otherwise ruined by toxic femininity. Toxic femininity has been taking over the film industry and other aspects of our lives for years now. It needs to be condemned and rejected.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have mixed feelings about this movie. I mean, it was not terrible at all, like some haters say, but it was not good at all as well. It was very flat and l was expecting something more impressive or unexpecting to happen. Also, the ending was a bit like "what the heck just happened now?". I wanted to like this movie but it was very disappointing. Sorry to say this, l could never imagine l would ever say these words but.. Avengers: Engame was a better movie. Expand

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy are great as always, but this isn't enough to save this crap. Some scenes are still enjoyable, but this is overall a huge disappointment. This could be a franchise killer at this point.

Please if you Marvel guy even make a X-Men movie this bad again feel free to call it X-Woman, like you mentioned in the film.Corniest and out of place statement in a film ever..Considering there was one instance of a woman saving people and about 10 instances of men saving people in the first 15 minutes of the film. And that one woman that saved people went on a killing spree for the rest of the film,, the whole film is wtf..

Just saw X-Men: Dark Phoenix it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be it was actually pretty enjoyable to watch but that could be due to my low expectations of the film (idk).

Some moments felt pretty man-bashing but I wasn't sure if that was me personally reading into them that way or if that was their intent (that x-women line was dumb for so many reasons).

Like there were **** tons of times where the men saved the women/ and other people (Logan when he went back in time etc, Quicksilver when he went to the X-Mansion to save all the students, Havok taking the blunt of the blast to save Charles, Darwin when he attempted to save Angel's dumb ass from joining Sebastian Shaw and died because of it, there are many, many more times where everyone saved each other's asses but no Mystique please only remember when the women do it because those were the only times that mattered).

But despite those few times I still did enjoy the movie and really didn't think it was that bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will not say this film is the worst of X series, in my humble opinion "Apocalypse" still the worst, I enjoyed visually but the story messed my mind especially when Raven killed!!

Simon Kinberg wrote a great film called Sherlock Holmes that was so well done. So how the hell is this possible? Well when I heard about the reshoots and the delays, I knew there was problems coming ahead.

The writing and effects are the worst aspects of the film. The cast, Michael Fassbender, James MacAvoy, and Jennifer Lawrence are outstanding; trying to make a god awful movie some how work. I am frustrated with Jessica Chastain and how they wanted her to be. There are moments in which this could work, but they are afraid to commit and use cliches to finish the story. But there is a comic book. There's a reason why this film exists, so use it.

Overall, just don't watch this movie.

Both are strong. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, all perform with admirable conviction and gusto. Given what Sinmon Kinberg had to go thru to get this made, this speaks volumes for his integrity, perseverance and craft. I agree with James Kendrick of Q Network Film Desk: "It works on its own terms and deserves neither the critical scorn nor audience apathy it has received." Not quite a "spiritual movie" taken down by aggressive negative reviewers, this is a good effort likely to rise in estimation in years to come. Expand
