Clive Owen is great in the lead role and proves that voice over can work very well (hard to imagine the film without it). The film is somewhere between a thriller and a drama. It is very low-key and very different from British crime/gangster films. Croupier watches more like a mystery, keeping the viewer in wonder as to how it is going to turn out. Overall, the film is very well put together and a solid recommendation. Expand

This film doesn't have the most attractive story in the world but it builds an interesting tension supported by the good work of its main character, a very young Clive Owen.

The atmosphere and the characters are the most solid points of the film and although the ending feels a bit disappointing, in general terms it's a captivating film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I found this to be a very slow moving movie, with Jack seeiming, in my opinion, rather unappealing at first, appearing to be a lanky, unhappy man that had previous experience as a croupier in Africa and is reluctant at first to step back into the role.

He is very analytical and uses his knowledge to help write/type his novel, which takes a long time to be finished and published but during the movie, his observations and thoughts which form the novel are voiced by way of a voice over, to provide an insight into the lifestyle and worries of a croupier.

The movie is quite dark and it points out the perceived desperation of some quite 'well to do' casino customers and questions their motive. The story gets more interesting after the first hour, as the heist comes into the frame with Alex Kingston playing her part, as a rather glamorous lady with more to her than first seems, quite well.

I can't really think of too much to say about this movie, other than that I found it too slow and boring and I just didn't feel any real interest in the character of Jack. I did think that it had a 'film noir' feel to it, with the bleak feel of the movie, it was fairly dark.

I wouldn't say this is a good movie to watch if your looking for a movie thats particularly glamorous or thats particularly action packed either, I felt it was a bit weak really and it didn't have much to keep the viewers interest, really. Perhaps I'm a bit harsh and I can be easily distracted but I can only comment on my thoughts, opinions and experience and I got bored pretty soon and ended up being distracted and wanted to sort some other things out while it was still playing.

I won't say that this is a horrendous movie, I can see that it does get some good reviews and some may enjoy it but I guess I just expected something else. This isn't a Hollywood movie, its a British movie and I guess im just too used to expecting movies to be more Hollywood like, in terms of having action and glamour and whatever else, which this, I felt, didn't have much of. You might be better off with one of the Oceans movies, if thats the sort of thing your interested in, mind you those seem a bit boring too, perhaps this just isn't my sort of movie. I just thought the story moved much too slow at the start and even worse, I didn't feel I had enough of an interest in the main character, to keep my interest in watching the movie through to the end, although I did end up watching it to the end. The story (pace wise) does pick up towards the end but overall I felt this was a bit too dark and dreary for my liking really, hence I wouldn't particularly recommend it but thats not to say that nobody would enjoy it and as I always say, if it sounds like something that interests you, then it could be worth checking out but otherwise, obviously, don't bother.

Really bad movie. Not enjoyable, boring, the third person is not intriguing.
