Lame. Had such high hopes. Gave up after 15 minutes. Its mindless...even with Ryan Gosling, its just falters. Relies too much on Steve Carell. Tries to be the next American beauty but ends up as a DVD bin box discount. Bypass this load of rubbish.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying that i was very disappointed with this so called "movie" which i saw in the theater after seeing the trailer and knowing that it futures some very talented actors - who should have known better than to star in such a movie.

It failed both as a movie and as a comedy, as a comedy it failed in the sense that... well... it just wasn't funny.
As a movie, i didn't relate to any of the characters and especially their relationships that include a 13 year old boy who's in love with a 17 year old teenager and his babysitter (a relationship his father actually encourages him to pursue at some point), the same babysitter who is in love with the 40 year old father of the boy.
On a totally different subject, the movie was also absurd, I can never imagine that a self-respecting guy (played very questionably by Ryan Gosling), who goes to bars with the purpose of sleeping with different women on a daily basis, would decide for no apparent reason to take a complete stranger and a person who creates the impression of a total screw-up under his wing.
The Emma-Ryan relationship starts only after a long background featuring a relationship of her and her boyfriend who she think is supposed to propose for no apparent reason. Then after he doesnâ

The rest of it is trash American culture at its most disgusting. The so-called plot enshrines sick and irrational jealousy as some kind of norm instead of a disease, lies and dishonesty the only life strategy, yelling, emoting and washing dirty linen in public as acceptable. And why is the father of every teenage daughter portrayed as foaming at the mouth at the first sign of his girl's sexuality. Sorry, but real, matyre people do not act like this and pretending this is reasonable behavior does a disservice to everyone. The only wise characters are the kids, despite the fact that any moron would know that they are clueless about the subject matter. With role models like these, no wonder our young people are confused and incapable of forming decent relationships. This film does not even cut it as a guilty pleasure, because the plot is absurd. Antidote to this incessant garbage for all Americans: Read Radical Honesty: Transforming Your Life By Telling the Truth. End of rant. Expand

Steve Carrell's acting performance was so terrible that it made Ryan Gosling look like DiCaprio. Gosling's scenes with Carrell were incredibly cringeworthy--luckily his scenes with Emma Stone were really able to save the day. The Gosling-Stone duo is iconic for the chemistry that they heatedly and repeatedly display on the screen, so props to the casting department for that one. To be fair, credit should be given Stone on her own, she stuns every role she is in. Another point goes to the casting department for the casting of the child actors. When it comes to the "comedy" part of this rom-com, the Weaver kids (Joey King and Jonah Bobo) really pulled it all together. Other than that, all other jokes fell flat. Most likely due to Carrell's presence that make everything feel like a drowsy dad-joke, when it seems like it was supposed to be delivered in a witty manner. Carrell's character Cal is extremely uncharismatic that it makes the idea that he could attract any of the beautiful women in question utterly unrealistic. Another flaw: the scenes where he ogles women like a thirteen year old boy who is just begging to hit puberty just make the whole vibe uncomfortable and creepy. Not sure if this was on purpose, but either way, it was weird. I could go on and on about what made Cal an unlikeable character, but when it comes down to it, I think it is simply because he is too similar to Steve Carrell's Michael Scott-- proving that Carrell just can't seem to get out of his comfort zone (which he still fails at). On a positive note: I thought it would be bad, and it was. So at least it lived up to my expectations. Expand
