A great British voice cast fronted by Johnny Depp (OK he's not British but plays the cripplingly shy young English gent Victor Van Dort well) and featuring Emily Watson, Joanna Lumley, Albert Finney, Paul Whitehouse, Tracey Ullman, Jane Horrocks, Michael Gough, Christopher Lee and Richard E. Grant simply astounds - few directors other than Tim Burton would be able to command the respect of such an array of talent. Helena Bonham Carter blows all away however with her tender performance as Emily, the tragic character of the title. She's a compelling, rounded protagonist and Bonham Carter takes her characterisation in many directions, from child-like immaturity, to bitterness at her situation to eventual dignified acceptance of her untimely demise, and every emotion in-between. The contrast between the sombre, formal and grey world world of the living and the lively, colourful and free land of the dead is striking and effective - Burton has retained his go-to theme of not belonging in the world you are born in, and still has a unique view of death and a distinctive and individual use of cheerfully macabre imagery. In addition to the detail and expressiveness of the puppets and the energy of the animation (supervised by the film's incredibly talented co-director Mike Johnson), Danny Elfman's rich soundtrack and catchy songs, particularly the jazzy "Remains of the Day" and the rip-roaring "Wedding Song" breathe real life into the film. Though the film has much to say about life, death, class, family, love and loneliness, what makes it so memorable is that Tim Burton has provided us with such an entertainingly oddball piece of fantasy escapism. The world of Corpse Bride is a real pleasure to spend time in, and you really grow attached to the weird and wonderful cast of misfits, be they corpse or not. Burton's kookiness and abundance of unusual ideas can sometimes get in the way of telling a coherent, evenly paced story (most noticeably in his recent efforts Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows), but not so here - Corpse Bride is a pleasingly simple tale well-told, and characters and their performers are allowed to make a real emotional connection with the viewer. For a film manufactured using an archaic form of animation that seems to aim to actively reject reality, and which prominently features the reanimated dead, it's an oddly human, and miraculously heart-tugging experience, and is probably the most balanced and immaculate of all Tim Burton's films. A story about the dead seems so fresh, alive, and beautiful. This is among Burton's best work. His brilliance for creating imagery and tone is why he is one of Hollywood's most distinguished directors.

The animation is absolutely amazing with the dark bold colours and inspired visual ideas. The music is good too, it adds very well to the atmosphere. The four songs are pretty decent, if nothing special. Remains of the Day was the one I liked best. The script is witty and deliciously dark in places, while the story is clever and fairly original, even if it drags slightly occasionally. The characters are wonderfully quirky and the voice work from the likes of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter is top notch. All in all, a beautifully crafted film, if not quite Burton's finest hour. 8/10 Bethany Cox Expand

The ending seemed very rushed, and there were times to have you guess, but it was kinda predictable. I guessed all the predictables, and a couple of cool lines to show in the movie. If Burton didn't just used "friends" as his voices, and took a better look at others, maybe it wouldn't have sounded so weak at times. Overall, a 7/10 sounds like the right rating. Seamless stop-motion, along with sets and visuals that dripped and oozed with gothic, outlandish color and flair. Definitely Oscar worthy for best animated film, and for best art direction. Also, voice acting was excellent. There was not a single bad performance in the film. From Depp's nervous/humble demeanor, to Bonham-Carter's flighty and twittery performance as the Corpse Bride herself, the casting was spot-on. Also, Elfman's sweeping score once again matches Burton's mood perfectly. The only place where the film faltered, was the musical numbers. The opening theme "Glorious Day for a Wedding", and the number where bar singing Bonejangles tells the story of the Bride are great, but it's in the 5+ other songs including a duet with the bride's head-dwelling maggot and a spider, where you find yourself looking at your watch. The abundance of these less-than-stellar songs may bore some older viewers, unless you are just a die hard Elfman fan. But still, the best animated film in a long while, and more than likely, the film tha will steal Pixar's thunder at the Oscar's this year. 9 out 0f 10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I myself am not a big fan of the Gothic style of Tim Burton's animated films. Rarely are there any shades of orange or yellow or any bright, non-depressing colors. However, I think Burton uses these different shades and hues as a metaphor; the living world contains most of the black and gray and the world of limbo (after reviewing the movie, I was surprised by the idea that the world Victor had been dragged into was limbo, rather than the world of the dead) contained more bright colors and happier characters. This film shows what love really is, not typical beauty and infatuation, but actually finding something in common with someone. The realization of the bride at the end of the film and her transition into the afterlife was illustrated very well. In short, this film is a nice love story and has an ending that isn't as typical as I thought it would be. Expand

Honestly, this may be one of the best animated films I have ever encountered. The attention to detail and true visual splendor, is incredible. The final sequence may be one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in a film before. Just...wow. In addition, the music is stellar, but all things created by Danny Elfman have to be, no? Stop-motion animated films never fail to inject a much-needed "weird" charm and delight audiences with something more than just a traditional "kid's flick." Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" does exactly that, injecting whimsy, weirdness, and dark humor in a film that's definitely quite enjoyable. With animation that absolutely pops off the screen, some nice music numbers, wonderful emotional scenes, and fantastic characters, "Corpse Bride" is a well-crafted animated film that overcomes it's slightly clichéd structure, occasionally groan-inducing jokes and sometimes-creepy character animation to become an enjoyable animated film. It is directed by Tim Burton, has its his style and tells a unique story. It is set in the Victorian era Britain and follows Victor Van Dort who comes from a nouveau rich family and has to deal with an arrange marriage with Victoria Everglot who is the daughter of an aristocratic family who lost a lot of their fortune / money. It is the standard arrangement that give one side wealth and the other side an upgrade in social standing. Luckily they fell in love with each other but a clumsy accident sets fantastic events in motion. I cant continue with more as it would be spoilers. It is an interesting story, with great ideas, full of fantasy and a lot of motives to enjoy and / or analyze. The title while fitting may be a bit misleading. The idea to use stop motion gives this a unique style. I did neither like nor hate it a first but it has grown on me since back then. Also it is a lot of work to create a movie this way. The time consumption is incredible and 1 day of work can only produce seconds of the movie. So I praise the efforts anyway as it is a lot of hard and dedicated work. Another strength are the voice actors. We got Johnny Depp as Victor Van Dort, Emily Watson as Victoria Everglot and Helena Bonhan Carter as Emily for the main cast. For the support we have Tracey Ullman, Richard E. Grant, Albert Finney and Johanna Lumley. All in all a great cast of voice actors. Then I must mention director Tim Burton who is famous for his unique movies. He does a really fine job here and I say this is one of his underappreciated movies. This is a fitting transition to the soundtrack. It is written by Danny Elfman and John August and full of good tracks. Overall I say this is a hidden gem. May not be of the highest order but still worth watching. Be warned a bit as some dislike Tim Burtons style. Expand

The best animated love story to date, a beautiful animated classic and a must watch for Valentines Day or Halloween (I guess The Nightmare before Christmas ain't the only film with two holidays included)

It has the sort of humor that will make you have a little giggle even on the second watch of it....giggling on the third time? I'll watch & write another review tomorrow, as I really wanna know! The corpse bride (eye popping out, maggots on her face & worst of all she doesn't shower!) is dubbed pretty by my 'ladyfriend'.... yet she herself would rather not go out without her make-up on....not realizing her own beauty? Should I get her some Maggots? Please comment below, help?

So THIS story ends with a huge plot twist!! ** Spoiler ALERT**

- You fall asleep just before half-way & wake up near the credits
- You end up using your imagination on how the movie went or asking an attentive 'ladyfriend'

Dark, JD, Giggling, Drop dead 'gorgeous' CB, maggots - All THIS combined gets a SOLID - 'Meh'

10/10!!!

*Update 3rd time still a giggle, stay tuned for a 4th update.

Directed by Tim Burton, has a screenplay by CarolineThis film, very popular during Halloween, tells a funny story which runs around a young woman who was murdered in her own wedding day, and that still hasn't lost hope of getting married. Directed by Tim Burton, has a screenplay by Caroline Thompson, Pamela Pettler and John August, and the voices of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, Albert Finney and Christopher Lee.

Tim Burton has a taste for strange and "out of the box" films, with unusual scenarios and bizarre characters. This is a well made script, with original ideas but functional, where everything fits as it should be. The selected voices belong to actors who usually collaborate in projects of this director, especially Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, director's wife and herself an actress of great vocal talent. None of them stayed behind expectations, having done an excellent vocal performance. The animations are very well done, using the stop motion technique, a lengthy process that, in this case, obtained a final result of high quality, which certainly benefited from the experience previously performed in "Nightmare Before Christmas". The integration of musical themes in the plot was well done, making us remember the tradition of musicals. The soundtrack, by Danny Elfman, makes here a very interesting result.

Despite being a animation film, is for adolescent and adult audiences, and blends harmoniously animation, morbidity, joy, music and romance. Worth seeing.

one of the directors who makes it the best in the world, and even the best director, tim burton is also my favorite director, director Edward Scissorhands' also is my favorite movie.

The world of Tim Burton is very different from gloomy gloomy but very beautiful when you enter the world that you are very impressed with it.

The corpse bride was a very emotional and meaningful film and you hardly keep yourself from crying, and at the same time you were laughing .

a very beautiful film has already written itself into cult films already, and you will enjoy it very much.

My mother and I are so happy that he made another beautiful and original animated film since The Nightmare Beofre Christmas because we waited for it for 10 years. I'm glad to say that the wait was worth it. The Corpse Bride is a wonderful emotional yet fun story with heart. We had a wonderful time watching it in the theaters and we can't wait to go see it again this weekend. The visuals are so amazing that you'd have to go see the movie with your own eyes for its impossible to explain there perfection. The characters all look stunning and there are so many wonderful new characters in this movie that will keep your eyes glued on the screen. The voices of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Emily Watson are packed with fantastic emotion and acting. The score goes very well to the movie and the four songs that are performed sound wonderful. My favorites were "Remains of the Day" made me feel like dancing: it was such a jazzy fun song with the cool voice of Danny Elfmen. And my other favorite was "Tears To Shed" it broke my heart. Helena Bonham Carter sang that song with such heartbreak I loved it! The story is very entertaining and it has so much heart in it and Gothic like background. I loved the dialog some of my favorite lines were "Why Go Up There When People Are Dying To Get Down Here" and "Can A Heart Still Break Once It's Stopped Beating." But the most important thing is that this movie makes you feel less frightened about death. Death in this movie is a lot funner than living and the dead are always having a good time and partying that you feel like dying is not so bad. You should take anyone to see this movie if their paranoid about death it will soften their fears, Overall I strongly encourage anyone to go see this movie. I hope Tim Burten wins the Oscar for best animated movie this year. He truly deserves it! Thank you Mr. Burten for the Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas and years worth of your great films. "The Corpse Bride" is not as much an animated film as The Nightmare Before Christmas, but it has merits. Tim Burton manages to deliver a fun movie and learn how to develop the elements and resources at hand.

Si bien la relación entre Victoria y Victor se pudo haber desarrollado muchísimo mas así como el antagonista principal, la estética me encanta, la historia esta excelente y encima solo dura 1 hora y 15 minutos. Eso si que es un logro.

My favorite part of the movie was the animation. I really enjoy stop-motion animation don't get me wrong, but a lot the time you can tell that you're just looking at a bunch of stills and it takes a few minutes getting used to. However, Corpse Bride has some of the smoothest stop-motion that I have ever seen. You really can't tell it even is stop-motion.

All in all, Corpse Bride is a fun experience that I recommend checking out at least once.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not a children's movie. The plot appears simple but the message is actually more nuanced - plus you have two heroines & one hero to root for (yes, life can be complicated & you do have to make difficult decisions sometimes). The stop motion animation & voice acting is top-notch. I enjoyed watching this movie again even after 10years. Expand
