Instead of a doc about this unique subculture, this father/son drama’s calling card is Idris Elba. When his troubled son (Caleb McLaughlin of Stranger Things) is sent to spend the summer with him, the typical formula plays out. The story beats are obvious throughout, but the performances are genuine. The only thing to recommend this standard drama is a glimpse into the real world of this unusual horse lovers. BTW, the credits feature interviews clips with some of the real cowboys, who also played small speaking parts in the film. Expand

'Concrete Cowboy' is your regular coming of age film. Caleb McLaughlin shines as a troubled kid finding his place in a new community, as well as a new relationship with his estranged father. Caleb McLaughlin shines as a troubled kid finding his place in a new community, as well as a new relationship with his estranged father. The chemistry with Idris Elba is good, but the conflict's outcome can be seen since the beginning. What first-time director Ricky Staub achieves is giving a glimpse — to brief, in my opinion — into the urban black cowboys of Philadelphia. It's a shame that the spot got shadow by a typical melodrama. Expand

The film's poorly penned script, with too much emphasis on some segments and not enough on others, is perhaps the biggest problem with this production, aided by little in the way of back story and character development. The performances, including those turned in by riders from the cowboy community itself, are generally capable, though there's not nearly enough of Idris Elba as the estranged dad in a clearly underdeveloped role. This one is easily forgettable for a variety of reasons, which is unfortunate in light of the picture's potential-filled subject matter. Expand

It's a modest coming of age story, and a productive and engaging portrait of a community that I really knew nothing about.

However, I must emphasize that the script fails the actors a bit.
It doesn't give them much to make it feel more dynamic or vibrant, and the dialogues are also somewhat weak.

It's still interesting though, but it doesn't get rid of the notion that much of its events feel quite manipulated.
And as I said, it's not the actors fault, they do believe the situations, there's simply a notorious lack of spontaneity in everything.

With errors, but I still liked it.
