I expected 'Coco' to be a Mexican 'Moana' (I was 12 back then, so Disney and Pixar were all same to me), but got something way better. This is one of Pixar's most memorable films- the songs, the worldbuilding, and of course, who can forget the humor, which is unpredictable beyond imagination. A double emotional climax, like the one we got in 'Toy Story 3' is all fine, but where this film excels is in empathy. To me, Pixar stories are all about accepting people for who they are, and this movie goes even further. That's reflected in the fact that this movie celebrates a culture foreign to America. There's a Ghibli movie called 'Grave of the fireflies' that can make a big brother care more for his little sister. 'Coco' is a movie that does the same for one's family. A must-see for all ages, and as a family if possible. Expand

Applausi a te, Pixar (mortacci).

Consigliato? Yupyupyup.

The themes are nice and I suppose very young children may struggle a little to follow all the messages - it could be mildly scary for very young kids but then it does have a PG rating, so that's fair. Its a nice, uplifting and cheery film, even though it very much focuses on the dead - indeed its set during 'la dia de las muerteas', aka 'The Day of the Dead' which is celebrated in Mexico. If you enjoy Pixar films, then I would recommend this film, in terms of the overall feel it gives out - its a bit of a warm hug of a film, as I say re-assuring, nice and not expressly too cinnamon sweet in a bad way. However, if you can't stand CGI animation, then obviously this won't be for you. I also enjoyed the variety of characters, with a rather zany stray/street dog called Dante being one and I also wondered if the inspiration behind the more villainous characters, had been taken from a telenovela (aka latin American soaps).

This isn't entirely a dumbed-down film and I would highly recommend it for family viewing overall, yes. Oh, and if you enjoy the guitar music, you might want to watch (or shall I say, listen) through the credits while it keeps playing. Its quite soothing and enjoyable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I think it is a film that is far from perfect, contrary to what many people say, I do think that it stands out on its own merits. It is not the kind of movie ruined by something serious, but rather by many minor flaws and that even I admit that they can be a bit fussy. For example, we do not know why Miguel died when he took Ernesto de La Cruz's guitar, as well as why he was the only dead human who did not automatically become a skeleton. Neither, even though the movie tries to explain it, we don't really know why Imelda had such contempt for Hector. He died poisoned, and it would be hard to believe that no one realized this, almost as if he had never existed. Then the initial conflict, as well as the end, seemed a bit forced, I mean, just because a relative abandoned the family for music, would they think that another could do the same? And in the end they let Miguel keep playing just because Coco was happy at the end of the movie? I also have minor doubts as to why the dog became an alebrije, as well as why Imelda was the only one who owned one, but hey ... removing all the bad things that are somewhat minor things, the truth is that the movie itself has a plot more than solid, I must say that Hector took most of the scenes in the film. Miguel is not bad, although sometimes he is a little irritating together with some of the relatives, and Ernesto's plot twist was quite predictable and possibly when Disney already began to be known for this of the revelations of villains that presented them to you as someone well. I have no problem with this, but they don't even give it time to shine. Anyway, it's a good movie, it has good morals and more than decent characters, but it is overshadowed by several minor flaws that, while not ruining, prevent the experience from being very good. It was close to hitting an 8. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I couldn't wait for it to be over. Despite a rich and vibrant tradition that the film is based on, this movie managed to make the Mexican idea of the afterlife seem dull, mundane, and indistinguishable from regular life but with trippy neon colors that hurt to look at after just a few minutes of viewing. There's bureaucracy, jobs, technological control over the dead population, cops, paperwork, and ... you guessed it! Resentful family members who still will never forgive you for the things you've done, or the things that weren't even your fault that they blame you for to protect their own egos. Oh yeah, you know what the afterlife also needs? Death! WTF?

This film had a horrible plotline that was boring from start to finish. Have you seen Rock Dog, The Wild, or any number of other cookie cutter movies about defying your parents' wishes for your adult career path? Then you've seen this movie. Unlike some others however the family in this film has no redeeming qualities and are despicable to the very end, physically abusive, loud, controlling, and have nothing better to do than to pick on the family's youngest relentlessly and control his life, even on holidays!

The only thing this film has going for it are the vibrant images, but let's be honest, this film is an example that more is not always more. The color palette is garish because it is not supplemented with any creative or stylistic use of contrast or scene elements. Everything throughout the movie is laden with dull blue and grey background hues and scenes where everything is lit, the screen is popping with brightly lit things so that your eyes never no where to look. In effect, the characters get lost in the scenery and seem unimportant, like they too are just stage pieces.

This movie was a total sigh. The family doesn't deserve this grandson, and after all the abuse this kid takes from his awful family he doesn't even get to have the film named after him. It's named after his dying great grandmother who is only a minor character and a plot device. I'm shocked that this film lacks soul, considering the subject matter. Is this what execs and employees at the mouse house are so apt to call "cultural appropriation"?

The only part I felt a bit mystified by was the cool stylistic choice to have the backstory animated through paper banners at the beginning. Everything that came after that was utterly predictable and just drug on and on and on. It was even predictable down to when something would "go wrong" just for the sake of keeping the movie running. The film also is a shameless propaganda plug for cancel culture, even post mortem. If it's ever revealed you did something terrible then all your life's work and everything you've contributed to the benefit of the world and others should instantly be forgotten as "punishment" even though you're already dead and gone. It's ludicrous. Watch "A Monster Calls" instead for a responsible and nuanced take on morality and the difficulty of facing death. Honestly this film might've worked as a much shorter movie, or a short film, but as it is it is a visually and temporally bloated mess with little heart, mercy, or empathy for its characters. Add a healthy dose of sexism where a father is blamed for his own murder by the wife because she had to raise the kid alone. Let's see how that would fly if the roles were reversed. Who cares about a family where the matriarch is a cold-hearted old bag who has no sympathy for her murdered husband enough to admit she was wrong and IMMEDIATELY change her attitude?

This film plays like a poorly stitched together golem of cutting room scraps from Mamoru Hosoda's "Mirai", which itself is a mediocre film about a kid with bad parents having family drama and discovering his ancestry (and going to hell and back only to not get the film named after him but after a female member of his family who is a minor character in the film... how familiar). At least the scenes with the magical nacho cheese Doritos that teleport souls between the worlds were pretty.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't know why but just seeing anything that is about a culture of a place instantly turns me off, especially of East Asian countries. I didn't know much about Mexico so I was actually thinking this would just be some stereotypical Mexicans, wearing sombrero and playing guitar (the movie is about that so that made me even more unwilling to watch it). But I saw it anyway and boy am I glad I did. Coco is one of those movies you won't be expecting will blow your mind away.
The story is about a boy named Miguel who really likes to play music. But his family is against music because of how his great-great-grandfather Hector left his great grandmother (referred to Mama Coco in this movie) to become a guitar player and then never came back. They think the rockstar they are seeing is actually Hector, whereas in reality he had been murdered by that rockstar.
Miguel, however, really wanted to play the guitar, and so he went inside Hector's church and played his guitar, which made all the spirits come to life and turned him into a spirit himself. Miguel was able to enter the world of the dead, where he wore makeup to look like a skeleton and met Hector over there. Hector tells Miguel that the dead people disappear from there as soon as they are forgotten, which is why they always visit the living. And this is the reason why he needs Miguel to tell everyone the truth before Mama Coco dies and Hector is also forgotten forever.
There are many things I like about this movie. Firstly all the basic things which we like in all the Pixar movies. The animation is very nice, the colour palette is gorgeous, the story is phenomenal. Pixar has made movies on many countries - Australia (Finding Nemo), France (Ratatouille), Britain (Brave) and Venezuela (Up). And now they have shown Mexico, which is a very good representation of their culture, considering that all the Mexicans reviewing this movie have really praised it.
And secondly the things it has done which we don't see in just any Pixar movies. The music is excellent. The music from the ending is actually playing in my head as I am writing this review. This is how memorable it is. The story is very well fleshed out and in no place have they rushed it. In the beginning we think of Hector as just one annoying man until we learn that he is doing all this to meet his daughter, whom he really wanted to see when he was alive but never got the chance to do so. This movie also sets up a race against time, as Miguel is fading away and when he's gone he will no longer be able to help Hector and he in turn will be gone forever.
Mama Coco also makes this so much intense, in spite of being an old woman who barely speaks. Since she has no senses left, it feels really bad that she will no longer be able to talk to her father. And this is why when she recognises Hector it gives a satisfaction that no previous Pixar movie has been able to give. It also pains to see how she lived her whole life thinking her father left her when in reality he was trying his best to not give her the pain she ended up having. And because of that pain he ended up being forgotten by his own family, for something he was trying to prevent in the first place.
I'm really glad I was able to watch Coco. Unlike most Pixar movies this movie has literally no problem. It is absolutely flawless. I really hope Pixar makes many more such movies in the future (I think Luka will be like this, and I really hope it is).

'Coco' is a spectacular animated masterpiece that contains all of the whimsical magic you'd come to expect from Disney/Pixar and it does so by representing an often under-showcased culture with smartly integrated lessons about set culture, memorable characters/designs, great music, and a story in which all ages can feel, think, follow, and understand. Pixar have always been leaders in CG animation and let me tell ya', 'Coco' contains some of the best animation to have come out of the studio. All the animators deserve a pat on the back for this project. The opening sequence alone is jaw-droppingly beautiful. Oh man, this one will forever be remembered by those who see it. Coco is a delight from start to finish. The characters are really really good, which is a compliment I haven't given to many recent PIXAR flicks. The music is also outstanding. The animation syncs so well with all the music especially when characters play guitar; the animation is once again extremely impressive, which has become a cliche to say. I always cry at the end of this movie, it moves me every time. This movie is also a great dive into Mexican culture, which was really cool to see. The skeletons look fantastic. The Land of the Dead is gorgeous and a really cool world to see. Coming right after Cars 3, this movie is a huge breath of fresh air. Heartbreakingly beautiful. Surpasses Up and Inside Out

Coco is about Dias de las Muerte (Day of the Dead), family, family crises and musical passion. The posters have a boy and an adult skeleton capering through the afterlife. So you can know that upfront, Pixar is going to fully deal with the subject of death that it touched upon I UP and hinted at in the death of childhood innocence in Inside Out.

We were subtly forewarned that tissues would be needed. :)

It surpasses the other aforementioned masterpieces by being more relatable, drawing on family restrictions and prohibitions (e.g. "there will be no X in this family!" X being "instead whatever has caused pain to a family member in the past". Pick your poison my reader). It surpasses them in making death tolerable. It reminds us that we should be mindful and respectful of all those who went before us. Most of all it taps on the shoulder and whispers that the temporal, the world we live in, in just as important as the next one and we should strive to keep family bonds strong. For when we're at the end of our rope, who else is there to pull us up?

Did I mention bring Kleenex? A full box. Even hard core macho men are driven to quiet sobs and immediate phone calls to mothers and fathers telling them "mama, I miss you."

Beautiful.

Stunning, beautiful, colorful, powerful, sad, happy. A joy of a ride.

I may be biased, since this movie portrayed perfectly what life is all about in a small Mexican town.

Or, perhaps I wanted to see Pixar really get back on the game. Go beyond Up, and make a complete movie that was as beautiful as the first 20 minutes of Wall-E.

I got my wish.

This is the movie I wanted Pixar to make, once again. A movie about what family means. A movie about the choices we make, and the roads not taken.

This is a stunning work of art. It'll move you from happiness to tears, from memories of the past to the joy of the future. To understanding, to remembrance. To the joys and pains of being alive.

I can't even begin to imagine how Pixar made a movie about life and death that is so colorful, so absorbing, so poignant, and so approachable for kids, and with so many layers upon layers upon layers of meaning and significance for adults.

To watch Coco is to love Coco, and to remember the Cocos in your life that are no longer among us.

Thank you, Pixar.

Unkrich echoes Shakespeare's Hamlet by providing some daunting yet thought-provoking ideas regarding the themes of Legacy and memory. Most notably, the harrowing fact that one day we will be truly forgotten by every living person on Earth: the final death, as the film puts it. It is thus fitting that music plays a large role in the film - because our memories live on through art and stories.

Interestingly, this is the most plot-heavy Pixar film. Many twists and turns occur with the plot, leading one discovery to another. In retrospect, the plot twists seem predictable, but not so much in the moment. Not a criticism, just an observation.

The film also features Pixar's recurring theme of Family, however it's execution is anything but. In many of Disney's films, the parent often goes through the change of having to learn to let their child follow their heart, be themselves, etc. (The Little Mermaid, for example) Although, Pixar challenges this in Coco. Ernesto de la Cruz represents the person that follows this mantra blindly: he follows his dream but at the cost of killing his best friend and having no chance for a family. On the other hand, Miguel represents the correct way to approach this mantra. He wants to follow his dream of being a musician, but realises it will cost him his relationship with his family. It is worth mentioning an overlooked yet vital moment in the film - when Miguel's great great grandmother grants him her blessing to return home to save Héctor, but at the cost of never playing music again. Miguel, without hesitation, says yes. This would've been an extremely ambitious move by the filmmakers but unfortunately they take the easy route out by having the film end where Héctor's memory is saved and the Rivera family can play music. This ending is still wonderful but it would've been really interesting if the filmmakers took the road less traveled.

To surmise, Coco is a film about Legacy - presenting daunting yet important ideas regarding the memory of loved ones after they die. They also subvert the typical theme of Family into something fresh, while providing an emotional journey through the land of the living and the dead. Overall, an amazing film.

But really all the songs are very emotional and make people cry just listening to them. This was definitely one of Pixar's most original ideas for a film at that time after just dishing out sequels. Somehow Lee Unkrich has managed to build on that heart-wrenching ending to Toy Story 3 with another movie that's jam-packed with emotion and heart. The opening 30-45 minutes is really what you'd expect to come from Pixar and it's a bit predictable. But the real magic starts when the Land of the dead comes, which is filled with fantastic world-building. The animation is stunning, from the vibrant colors and lights to the splendid reconstruction of a Mexican tradition. The story just brings so many twists and turns from there with a whole family heritage story and an aspiring musician's tale also. The whole Land Of The Dead is done beautifully from the buildings, bridge etc. Its filled throughout with a colorful theme that just makes you feel so happy. The masterpiece in here is the final act, which is by far one of the best of Pixar's films. the "Remember Me" song scene is executed perfectly with no musical number, but instead lets you take in the emotion of the moment. Coco is just a sensational film! Expand

Pixar's Coco was a film that made me cry, this movie is a work of art in my perspective. Let's review this.

The story is pretty great and simple to understand. The setting revolves around the Land of the Dead (which kinda fits the theme of life-and-death), but you'll really know more about the spirit world (Land of the Dead) once you watched the movie. The cast of characters is so well written, charming and/or humorous. But the visuals for Coco are just fantastic and stunning! You'll appreciate the visuals and art direction more if you watch the "behind the scenes" stuff. The music is really memorable and well-executed. There's a lot of pretty good humor (lots more than Ratatouille) and the movie feels like an adventure you'll end up rooting for the characters. Also, to mention the touching moments in the movie could seriously warm your heart, especially the ending, it could really make you cry.

This film is one of the few movies (so far) that made me cry. The first movie I've cried to was The Iron Giant and the second is Big Hero 6 (in 2014), but dang, it's really been a while since I've cried to any kind of movie. So really, Coco presented its story really well, the visuals were stunning (like Ratatouille), and the music is really memorable. This is a really great movie to watch for kids and maybe both teens and adults, but anyways the score is a... 10! (10)

One of my top 10 favorite musical movies, one of Pixars best works of all time, one of my favorite animated movie, and one of my favorite movies of all time. The animation and visuals are spectacular and visually stunning. The story, narrative, and writing are amazing and deeply touching. The voice acting was great especially from Anthony Gonzalez, Gael Garcia Bernal, Alanna Ubach, and Benjamin Bratt. I loved the musical score and I loved ever single song in the movie. Coco did a amazing job at portraying and respecting the Mexican culture and their traditions. Expand

The biggest one by far is that I found the film to be overstuffed with characters that are by no means essential to the plot, which is by the way quite thin and stretched at the same time. And it goes without saying that the approach they took to tell the story is indisputably unoriginal. Let alone the familiar themes the film tackles. What makes up for these problems are: the jaw-dropping animation, the vast and vibrant world that you can't help roaming over it in your mind, and the flawlessly-executed heartbreaking final act. I think the music and the songs are quite good, especially "Un Poco Loco" and of course the Oscar-wining "Remember Me".

I'm glad to see that Pixar can still make amazing emotional, fun and visually stunning movies like only they can make. Coco is yet another animated flawless movie from a studio with an unbelievable track record, its representation of mexican culture is incredible and it shows that a lot of effort and investigation was invested in the making of the setting of this movie. It has an emotional and heart-breaking plot with some actually dark stuff and a mind-blowing cute message that everyone could relate to and it's made to change the mind of the viewer. The visual style, specially the character design and the world of the dead is just stunning.

The only complaint I could have is the repetitive songs, like "Remember Me" is played throughout the entire movie but I can actually be fine with it, it's not a big problem.
This is a beautiful movie and one of the best Pixar has ever made, and probably the second best original movie the company has released during this decade.

Coco is a another DisneyPixar and it's directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, written by Lee Unkrich and voices-staring Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal and Benjamin Bratt.

Story by Jason Katz, Matthew Aldrich and Adrian Molina. Despite his family's baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.

The sins of this movie are existing, the biggest sin is the sense of humor, I didn't laugh a lot in this movie, it was just dark and tragedy. With its powerful message and story, I don't care about the comedy of this movie, but still, it's a very important element to see in an animation movie.

The next sin has a little spoiler, and it's the strange creatures in the dead's world, including the dog, I didn't like them, especially the dog.

The last sin is the long trip that got me bored, yeah, I got bored in the middle of this movie.

But Coco presents a great animation feature, fitting voices and a very powerful story.

I'm gonna give Coco a B+.

Thank you, guys for reading this review, and as always I welcome you comments.

Coco tells a story of a boy named Miguel who has music banned in his home because of his apparent great grandfather, Ernesto de la Cruz, being crushed by a giant bell. However, Miguel wants to be able to play music like Ernesto de la Cruz. He decides he wants to play his guitar at a talent show on the night of Day of the Dead. He steals Ernesto’s guitar from his grave to use at the talent show, but he gets sent to the Land of the Dead. There, he struggles to get back home. He needs a blessing from a family member to, and the relative who tried to give him a blessing said he could never play music again if he went back home, or he would come right back. So, he finds an individual named Hector who said he could help Miguel find Ernesto. In turn, Miguel has to put Hector’s photo on the afrenda so he won’t be forgotten. When they finally find him, Ernesto seems like a loving great-grandpa. However, it is soon revealed that Ernesto stole Hector’s songs and poisoned him. He then throws Miguel and Hector in a sinkhole. There, they discover that Hector is Miguel’s great-grandfather instead of Ernesto. Then, Ernesto steals Hector’s picture and they must get it back. In the process, it is revealed to a whole bunch of people about what Ernesto did. After Ernesto gets a blessing again where he can still play music. Coco is definitely a family film to check out. Pixar did everything they've always done and put it into this movie. Emotional moments, incredible animation, great setting, fantastic plot, and the musical scores are at their best here.

First, the graphics are beautiful, there are incredible sceneries, like the dead's city or the flower bridge. The scenario is really great, full of emotion, classic but effective. The musics are great, even if some of them are not iconic as some else Disney's musics (but it's a Pixar I know). The only bad point I have to say is that the film is too short, I think it could have been better, we could have more time to savor the poetry of the film. In conclusion, it was a really good film. Our family watched this on Netflix after seeing Solo at the theaters. Nobody cared for Solo, but the whole family absolutely loved Coco!
Tip to Disney - Let Pixar take the reins with the Star Wars material.

Watch it now folks, this one is a bomb. Some part of the musical score or tunes in some scenes in the movie may be against my taste (or didn't like it) but the overall quality of the film has greatly compensated that and proves to be a watchable and an enjoyable film for all ages.

The movie explores family relationships, strong passion of a person, engaging music, and the Mexican culture. It is an enjoyable film filled with amazing visuals, songs, and sentiments about love of family and their relationship to one another. I have to be honest, I was touched by the relationship of their family and fell melancholy during the ending scenes. The movie shows that love and care still persists even on the other side of life (or after death).

The film will teach viewers the importance of family and their relationships to one another. It also relieves us the fear of an inevitable death to each one of us because Pixar tries to be optimistic and positive in a way that it manages to show it's viewers that there is another life or hope in the other side of our lives; not pertaining to religion of course. Pixar has once again deliver another rich cinematic experience for the young and old to love and enjoy.

One of Pixar's formidable creations that has a huge impact in the film industry of modern animated films. A formidable Oscar candidate for Best Animated Feature of the year Coco was released. Congrats Pixar, you moved me to this feeling again and the film proves Pixar still has the magic, heart, and brilliance in making these worthwhile and memorable animated films we all come to love since Toy Story was released in 1995.

Despite sharing a nearly identical array of stylistic visual choices and featuring the cultural holiday of Dia de los Muertos as a core element of it's storytelling, Coco places the emphasis on themes of family and a love of music as opposed to the love story that can be found in the aforementioned, Guillermo del Toro produced animated film. It goes to far deeper and more impressive places as a result.

The use of Mexican heritage allows a lot of fresh scenarios to pop up in the story and can introduce viewers to lifestyles they don't often get to see represented onscreen. It sets a new high bar for animation quality. The amount of detail in things like wrinkled faces is incredible. Things can carry a sense of photorealism that is only hampered by the cartoonish character design. The celebration and use of music only add to the Book of Life comparisons, but the songs themselves are well-done.

The thing that built Pixar's respected reputation and kept them relevant in the face of a brief low period was their ability to make emotionally poignant experiences with enough depth to please viewers of all ages and great senses of humor, among other aspects. Coco is another example of that capacity. It's one of their more heartbreaking and heartwarming films in quite sometime. The humor is a little lacking though. Feels like not too many jokes made their way into the film. It allows more room for the plot though so I can't complain too much. It's not among the computer-animation studio's funniest movies, but it is one of their most meaningful.

While an all around remarkable film, there are some issues with Coco that prevent it from standing at the top of Pixar's portfolio. The movie suffers from a big case of predictability. I knew what the big twist was and how things would end some time before the reveals were made. This removes some of the effectiveness from the film, but ultimately can't defeat it's heart. This is still a very powerful viewing. So while more originality would have been preferred, Coco is still an enjoyable film that comes highly recommended.

"No Music!"

"Coco" is a beautifully animated film with plenty of heart to go around, of course knowing it's from Pixar. How the film explores 'Day of the Dead' and it's world by taking a particular culture and doing something incredibly unique with it. Much better than "The Book of Life", I can say that. Each character having their own colorful personality which makes them a enjoy to watch.

You know for a family movie, it's packed with a lot of themes such as: death, murder, and aging, that was handled so maturely.

My issues with the movie is it's villain, because I didn't think this type of story needed one. I won't spoil anything, but doesn't really matter since a lot of twist and turns can be seen a mile way, it gets predicable at times especially towards the end. I'm sorry to say this but "Remember Me" isn't a good song. I mean, it was use well for only that scene, but try and sing it elsewhere, not so much.

Overall rating: If it's says Pixar on the tin, you know what you get. Despite my problems, it's still enjoyable and that ain't a bad thing.

Somewhat predictable, but nonetheless another smash hit from Pixar after some years of mediocrity. It has all the heart and character you'd come to expect.

First time I watched this, I thought that the only flaw was recycling some plot elements from older Pixar films. However, having watched it the second time, I realised that even these points were used possibly to a better effect than their predecessors, and in a more deserving film. All in all i would say this is more than a return to form for Pixar, calling back to their golden age; it may just be the best feature-length film they have ever made, and a wonderful achievement in animated film.
