Happy New Year,everyone!
And please STOP with the 'New Year,New Me' thing,ok?!?
Onto the review.
After coming out from 'Coco' refreshed me in many ways, mostly because not only is it the best animated movie of 2017,but also because I was satisfied in seeing a truly good movie after a lineup of decent or 'Garbage' movies (only this Fall, not 2017 as a whole).
With this movie being a Pixar production,it should be a cliche saying that the animation is getting close to photorealistic. Not only the water, but also the cobblestone felt real, and this time, the charachters didn't feel out of place thanks to Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) and Adrian Molina's immaculate way of directing. Adrian Molina takes most of the movie's credit in terms of writing, direction and also music (while Michael Giacchino's score makes the Mexican culture feel accurate, more than John Powell's Ferdinand),and, honestly, nothing felt misdirected. The theme of this movie "Remember Me" isn't played infinite times like if it wants to be an Oscar Contender, the screen play doesn't have any 'nonsensical' or 'misguided' lines or scenes and some of the soundtrack's secondary choices like ''Un Poco Loco'' and ''The World Es Mi Familia'' can be catchy at some point. Even the cast doesn't feel like they are there for a paycheck, and yes (a thousand times yes),I can feel a great future for Anthony Gonzalez's glorious voice. Now let's not go full fanboy, because, sure, this movie is flawless, but it's not as flawless as,say,Wall-E or Toy Story 2,but it is still some true Pixar stuff (especially after the impressive Cars 3),and it is (indeed) better than some other Pixar movies like the Cars Franchise or A Bug's Life.
Summing it up,Coco is beautiful. The story feels like a lesson about Mexican culture while being an Animated flick, the voicecast is gorgeous and the animation makes it the 2nd best movie of 2017 in terms of "Artistic Imagery".

Don’t listen to reviews claiming that Disney / Pixar should not touch other cultures, because it is an absurd claim. I’m quite aware Mexicans are perfectly capable making own movies, but who - apart from Mexicans - is watching them? I’m sure I’m not, as millions of people that will watch Coco. And I’m really glad that I did. Besides going this road we could never see Mulan, Moana and many more great animations...

I had high expectations for this film, but it was more enjoyable than I thought it would be! Even with a long running time and not much laughs, Coco succeeds thanks to its gorgeous visuals, endearing characters, imaginative settings, strong plot, and heartfelt messages about the importance of life, death, memories, and family.

It's also great to see Mexican culture be represented with care and affection by a Hollywood studio. A great film to watch on your Thanksgiving break. 8.5/10

Coco has some breathtaking scenes that will completely mesmerize an audience, it has a great message about the importance of family and remembering them, and it managed to create a story that had few hiccups. The only major problem that I had with Coco is that it had some predictable twists. But overall, Coco is a fine and worthwhile film to go out and see, be it by yourself or with some friends or family. Expand

*NOTE: I would highly encourage that parents/guardians consider the age and maturity of their children before attending. Coco deals with themes of death and depicts characters dying. Kids 7+ should generally be fine.
1. The animation is beyond what Pixar has been achieving recently. For some reason, they seemed to really not want to settle for anything less than perfect with Coco. Unlike Disney's older, earlier use of CGI where they'd achieve a large background or hundreds of characters in the distance by cloning the same character over and over like the armies in Mulan, Disney had 2D artists meticulously detail every single building in the background. It was similar to Hayao Miyazaki's use of highly detailed background mixed with simple characters in the foreground.
2. I think I'd give it a 7 actually, I think the plot had a bit of fat that could have been trimmed and as another reviewer mentioned, it lacks the classic constantly near-perfect Pixar humor, but I'm bumping up the rating slightly because some reviews are giving it a zero because using a handful of Spanish words and referencing South American and Spanish culture is now an "SJW liberal agenda." The film is just a cute Day of the Dead story.
3. The character design is really good. They use shape language and costume really well, successfully designing characters that look exactly like their personalities.
4. I had that feeling of being slightly ahead of the plot but that's alright in a children's film, it wasn't entirely predictable or boring.
5. I wouldn't personally call the film a musical. There are characters who perform music and sing, but only in realistic ways. The songs are pretty enjoyable. I feel like it could have used an extra lighthearted or pick-me-up song because the central song of the story, Remember Me, was a little sad although also the best song in the film.
6. Coco's message is one we've seen a lot from Disney and Pixar. Despite it not being a very original moral, they managed to present it in a pretty original way.
7. The best thing I can say is that I went into this film with no knowledge of it. Having been burned a lot by a couple bad titles recently, I was expecting nothing good. It blindsided me by being memorable and surprisingly heartfelt.

On a quest to find his Grandfather he discovers a world never imagined.

What a fantastic film, rich of intrigues, emotion and mesmerizing scenes.

The warmth and Spanish undertone of the film, evoke your own family bonds, while fond memories and love for one’s Grandmother stirs your heart.

I lost myself in the movie to such an extent that I forgot I was watching an animated production.

Coco is not a musical, but there is a hint of music in the film, which builds on top of the superb storyline. The screenwriter manages to create a suspense in which one can’t wait for Miguel to play his next riff on his strum.

The film is heartwarming. It manages to show us a different side to the afterlife, a side which we never imagined, where the dead interacts with the living and skeletons are beautiful, emotional and lovable characters.

Miguel strikes a friendship with a trickster named Hector and together they discover the story about Miguel’s family, which eventually leads to making his dream become reality.

The animated 3D adventure encourages oneself to follow your dreams at all cost, but most importantly to put your loved ones first.

The movie has been produced by Disney and taken Gross Income of $457,925,760 from it’s opening on the 22nd of November until 22nd of December 2017.

Coco is a wonderful film for the whole family and a must see for everyone who loves music, beautiful scenes and awesome characters!

Coco is a film that never fails to entertain throughout it's entire duration. Each scene presents fun and engaging moments that constantly expand on the story, characters, and setting.

Pixar has gone through a recent trend of sequels and their new IP's haven't stood out as much, but Coco breaks this stigma and shows that the studio has plenty of stories left to tell. As with every recent Pixar film it has a huge heart. This time around the importance of family is the primary theme and it explores this through a premise that is rarely explored in film: life beyond death.

Coco is vividly colourful, deeply emotional, and is an excellent portrayal of Mexican culture.

This film was filled with a lot of charm and love with every bit of detail they would add in the animation and even the music, so much of this film kept me with a big smile and never looking away. The only issue I have that keeps it from being a perfect film is the story, I was able to predict most of the twist and part of the ending, it does do some of the typical Disney tropes where the boy tries leave the family to pursue his dreams that the family forbids him to do, but it doesn't ruin the film, because It works in the film's favor, it helps give it even more charm that it already has. In short, Coco is a fantastic film with so much to love about it and even if the story can be predictable with the some of the typical Disney plot, it doesn't take away from the film, but it gives it more to love about it. I highly recommend this film to everyone and I think it's up there with the great Pixar films and deserve all the praise it's getting. Expand

Watch it now folks, this one is a bomb. Some part of the musical score or tunes in some scenes in the movie may be against my taste (or didn't like it) but the overall quality of the film has greatly compensated that and proves to be a watchable and an enjoyable film for all ages.

The movie explores family relationships, strong passion of a person, engaging music, and the Mexican culture. It is an enjoyable film filled with amazing visuals, songs, and sentiments about love of family and their relationship to one another. I have to be honest, I was touched by the relationship of their family and fell melancholy during the ending scenes. The movie shows that love and care still persists even on the other side of life (or after death).

The film will teach viewers the importance of family and their relationships to one another. It also relieves us the fear of an inevitable death to each one of us because Pixar tries to be optimistic and positive in a way that it manages to show it's viewers that there is another life or hope in the other side of our lives; not pertaining to religion of course. Pixar has once again deliver another rich cinematic experience for the young and old to love and enjoy.

One of Pixar's formidable creations that has a huge impact in the film industry of modern animated films. A formidable Oscar candidate for Best Animated Feature of the year Coco was released. Congrats Pixar, you moved me to this feeling again and the film proves Pixar still has the magic, heart, and brilliance in making these worthwhile and memorable animated films we all come to love since Toy Story was released in 1995.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The visuals are gorgeous. Vibrant colours range from the radiant oranges of leaves to the iridescent blues of The Land of the Dead. Truly a feast for the eyes, and is one of the best-looking animated films.

Unkrich echoes Shakespeare's Hamlet by providing some daunting yet thought-provoking ideas regarding the themes of Legacy and memory. Most notably, the harrowing fact that one day we will be truly forgotten by every living person on Earth: the final death, as the film puts it. It is thus fitting that music plays a large role in the film - because our memories live on through art and stories.

Interestingly, this is the most plot-heavy Pixar film. Many twists and turns occur with the plot, leading one discovery to another. In retrospect, the plot twists seem predictable, but not so much in the moment. Not a criticism, just an observation.

The film also features Pixar's recurring theme of Family, however it's execution is anything but. In many of Disney's films, the parent often goes through the change of having to learn to let their child follow their heart, be themselves, etc. (The Little Mermaid, for example) Although, Pixar challenges this in Coco. Ernesto de la Cruz represents the person that follows this mantra blindly: he follows his dream but at the cost of killing his best friend and having no chance for a family. On the other hand, Miguel represents the correct way to approach this mantra. He wants to follow his dream of being a musician, but realises it will cost him his relationship with his family. It is worth mentioning an overlooked yet vital moment in the film - when Miguel's great great grandmother grants him her blessing to return home to save Héctor, but at the cost of never playing music again. Miguel, without hesitation, says yes. This would've been an extremely ambitious move by the filmmakers but unfortunately they take the easy route out by having the film end where Héctor's memory is saved and the Rivera family can play music. This ending is still wonderful but it would've been really interesting if the filmmakers took the road less traveled.

To surmise, Coco is a film about Legacy - presenting daunting yet important ideas regarding the memory of loved ones after they die. They also subvert the typical theme of Family into something fresh, while providing an emotional journey through the land of the living and the dead. Overall, an amazing film.

The themes are nice and I suppose very young children may struggle a little to follow all the messages - it could be mildly scary for very young kids but then it does have a PG rating, so that's fair. Its a nice, uplifting and cheery film, even though it very much focuses on the dead - indeed its set during 'la dia de las muerteas', aka 'The Day of the Dead' which is celebrated in Mexico. If you enjoy Pixar films, then I would recommend this film, in terms of the overall feel it gives out - its a bit of a warm hug of a film, as I say re-assuring, nice and not expressly too cinnamon sweet in a bad way. However, if you can't stand CGI animation, then obviously this won't be for you. I also enjoyed the variety of characters, with a rather zany stray/street dog called Dante being one and I also wondered if the inspiration behind the more villainous characters, had been taken from a telenovela (aka latin American soaps).

This isn't entirely a dumbed-down film and I would highly recommend it for family viewing overall, yes. Oh, and if you enjoy the guitar music, you might want to watch (or shall I say, listen) through the credits while it keeps playing. Its quite soothing and enjoyable.

But really all the songs are very emotional and make people cry just listening to them. This was definitely one of Pixar's most original ideas for a film at that time after just dishing out sequels. Somehow Lee Unkrich has managed to build on that heart-wrenching ending to Toy Story 3 with another movie that's jam-packed with emotion and heart. The opening 30-45 minutes is really what you'd expect to come from Pixar and it's a bit predictable. But the real magic starts when the Land of the dead comes, which is filled with fantastic world-building. The animation is stunning, from the vibrant colors and lights to the splendid reconstruction of a Mexican tradition. The story just brings so many twists and turns from there with a whole family heritage story and an aspiring musician's tale also. The whole Land Of The Dead is done beautifully from the buildings, bridge etc. Its filled throughout with a colorful theme that just makes you feel so happy. The masterpiece in here is the final act, which is by far one of the best of Pixar's films. the "Remember Me" song scene is executed perfectly with no musical number, but instead lets you take in the emotion of the moment. Coco is just a sensational film! Expand

This film has a few chuckles and a lot of impressive, beautiful animation, but like most recent Pixar offerings it relies more on tugging your heart strings than making you laugh. I enjoyed the movie but it certainly isn't a Pixar classic like "Finding Nemo" (their last masterpiece). I feel it is probably their finest film since "The Good Dinosaur", a very underrated Pixar film. Like most Pixar films there is a short film before the main event. It was probably the longest "short" ever, more like a mini-movie. It involved Olaf the snowman and Christmas and was enjoyable, although lengthy. Expand

Despite sharing a nearly identical array of stylistic visual choices and featuring the cultural holiday of Dia de los Muertos as a core element of it's storytelling, Coco places the emphasis on themes of family and a love of music as opposed to the love story that can be found in the aforementioned, Guillermo del Toro produced animated film. It goes to far deeper and more impressive places as a result.

The use of Mexican heritage allows a lot of fresh scenarios to pop up in the story and can introduce viewers to lifestyles they don't often get to see represented onscreen. It sets a new high bar for animation quality. The amount of detail in things like wrinkled faces is incredible. Things can carry a sense of photorealism that is only hampered by the cartoonish character design. The celebration and use of music only add to the Book of Life comparisons, but the songs themselves are well-done.

The thing that built Pixar's respected reputation and kept them relevant in the face of a brief low period was their ability to make emotionally poignant experiences with enough depth to please viewers of all ages and great senses of humor, among other aspects. Coco is another example of that capacity. It's one of their more heartbreaking and heartwarming films in quite sometime. The humor is a little lacking though. Feels like not too many jokes made their way into the film. It allows more room for the plot though so I can't complain too much. It's not among the computer-animation studio's funniest movies, but it is one of their most meaningful.

While an all around remarkable film, there are some issues with Coco that prevent it from standing at the top of Pixar's portfolio. The movie suffers from a big case of predictability. I knew what the big twist was and how things would end some time before the reveals were made. This removes some of the effectiveness from the film, but ultimately can't defeat it's heart. This is still a very powerful viewing. So while more originality would have been preferred, Coco is still an enjoyable film that comes highly recommended.

Probably the most personally touching Pixar movie for me, being a musician and having a deeply strong passion for guitar, I found COCO to be one of the most memorable PIXAR films of recent memory, that I found actually deeply interesting due to the setting and the characters, and how the flick deals particularly with Mexican culture. Just a really pleasant flick overall. In terms of criticisms, It's not necessarily the most original of narratives, and is actually sort of very predictable in terms of where the narrative is going and what happens. Otherwise, I loved it. Id happy go see it again, and an enjoyable, heart wrenching gift for the whole family to enjoy. Expand

Death has never before been so alive. Oscar-winner Lee Unkrich and Seattle Film Critics Award-winner Adrian Molina seem to be consolidated as the kings of the present-day animation because, through the "hypothetical" inequality of yearsDeath has never before been so alive. Oscar-winner Lee Unkrich and Seattle Film Critics Award-winner Adrian Molina seem to be consolidated as the kings of the present-day animation because, through the "hypothetical" inequality of years working in the field, they have achieved, in a magnificent way, to synthesize the characteristics with greater sensitivity and affinity from their previous works to use them in a plausible co-direction that allows the film to be what it is. Likewise, it was an outstanding job what they did with the general draft or/and the original story that plays a vital role for the success of the idea, in which it's possible to catch respectful and fresh reference parallelisms to certain functional aspects present in prior flicks such as the independence representation from "Finding Nemo", the overcoming of a specific problem in a gracefully dynamic way from "Monsters, Inc", and, of course, the most perceptible, an emotional and severe final message coming together harsh reality from "Toy Story 3." Additional to the aforementioned two directors-screenwriters, names of the caliber of Jason Katz and Matthew Aldrich stand out in the writing for their prestige and recognition in the company, leaving, as a result, an Aldrich-Molina explosive mix that provokes the correct working of the powerhouse script. In the case of this animated feature film, death, an openly polarizing subject at present, has got a subtle, clever treatment in order to capture, in a fantastic way, the truth hiding the loss of a loved one, using accessible analogies which stir up a proactive unique masterclass in core plot idea development. About this, the whole film moves with a comfortable margin among corny drama and circumstantial comical situations that achieve, within all that unreal and hopeful context, reflect difficult and pure reality, leaning, with respect, in the ideal Mexican holiday that fits perfectly with the leitmotiv. It's clear that what makes easier the excellent final cut is the charisma and the particular essence of the story and its characters, they are pawns serving as a bridge between message and audience.

Creatively, the film uses its tools in a way that exhibits the meticulous quality showed in the Pixar works. It follows the patterns of introduction and development evidenced in previous works, and although the most assiduous film buffs can feel repetitive this prototype, it's always estimable the effort to dodge the traditional through stories that transcend narrative barriers, unequivocally, through emotional scripts. While the first two acts are a complete enjoyment, the highlight is reserved for the final part because "Coco" has the luxury of having the second more emotionally disturbing and sentimentally dramatic climax in an animated film of the 21st century, only behind, no doubt, "Toy Story 3". It's overwhelming the set of emotions that an audiovisual extremely glorious moment can convey audience, one that has been fire engraved in the annals of cinema, one that will ensure the presence of hankies.

The visual section is a whole other story. After a beautiful graphic simplicity coming from "Cars 3", the studio goes back roots and decides to bet on sharply-meticulous landscapes again, using as tools bright colors, colorful textures and confections that are going to leave you open-mouthed, maybe, that's why many film attendees come to the theaters with each new release, they're aware of the dimensions of tidiness and the labor demands that the company portrays through its continuous masterpieces. In the same way, the sound aspect excels in counted periods, however, in which it succeeds, it does it in an unbeatable way. Although it does not reach near-perfect scores as Lin-Manuel Miranda's melodies for "Moana" or Randy Newman's for "Toy Story", the film extracts what can most of these in the drama set-pieces, undoubtedly highlighting "Remember Me" by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, which climatizes the most powerful emotional moment in the movie. "Coco" by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina condenses a wide range of American cinema's strangeness and traditional elements, delivering the animated audiovisual work of the year par excellence. This enjoyable and deeply touching Magnum opus has reserved a gold place in the most prestigious movie awards, however, beyond critic acclaims or awards, its creators must feel fully fortunate that their film has gained a little piece of memory and love in the heads and hearts of millions and millions of people, perhaps, just like I did. We can breathe a sigh of relief, Disney pics keep to signify learning pillars for the growth of many people.

I went with some friends to a night time showing and I think it's safe to say we all enjoyed the film. Scoring this movie was really hard for me because if we were to look at letter grades, it definitely would be somewhere in the B-range for me but where? An 80% seemed too low but something closer to 90% seemed too high. I think it would be hard to counter that the illuminating scenery was anything less than magnificent. I don't think a scene went by where I was not in awe of the pure beauty of the movie from the spirit guides to the bridge; I think the best word to describe it would be "enticing!" Even the opening which was not lit up was gorgeous and was reminiscent of Hercules or Beauty and the Beast. The music was also stellar and I felt hypnotized by the guitar. I had extremely high expectations because Lee Unkrich is credited as the sole director of TS3, which I think is a perfect film, but I don't exactly think Coco was. I feel like there was a lot less humor in this film as compared to most Disney or Pixar films and that the jokes just didn't hit quite as much as they could. It was also a bit predictable plot wise which being a family film is forgivable but doesn't add to the score? I will say I feel like my experience watching this film was very similar to my experience watching ET. I didn't think I was that connected until the end when the drama hit and I started choking up, and for clarification sake , I've never cried in a movie, so choking up is about as far as I get. Overall, this won't crack my top five movies of 2017 but I'm willing to say it will hit my top ten. I definitely think you should go see it but I don't think it is the best Pixar film we've ever had. * And then the little foot note that is Olaf's Frozen Adventure. I didn't like the Frozen short before Cinderella, and I think this was better but oof. There was exactly one joke, where Olaf is being a savage, that I just started balling out laughing and is probably the only time I purely laughed while I was at the movie. But, other than that, it was tedious. Yes, I'm probably being too harsh on it but the movie ticket said 7:45, OFA started at 8:00, and that's a 20 minute short of all these discombobulated D-rate songs. I love Frozen, I saw it seven times in theatres, but goodness, I think I'm done with Frozen. Of course, I'm sure temptation will win over when Frozen 2 comes out in 2019... Expand

Although Coco's has a certain fallacy because the family of the main character, is a Mexican family rooted in the rural spectrum and these people celebrate music, the fact that Miguel's passion is forbidden it certainly does not seem entirely believable, but at least the background is believable and functional.

Evidently Coco plays with the idea of any children's movie where children seem to know more than adults and adults do not react well to that, after his grandmother smashes his guitar, Miguel's true odyssey begins and Coco's magic appears .

The visual aspect - not the animation - is frankly rich and any Mexican or Latino living in the US will find it familiar, all the inconography and folklore are present and they are the most striking strength of this film.

That it does not feel original? No, undoubtedly it does not, but the difference lies in the more entrenched quality that Pixar imposes on the film, its message is not new either and although it's fair to believe that Pixar took something already seen and improved it's also fair to give this film the chance and appreciate it for the quality it contains, not for what it did better than those who came before and at that point, like it or not, Coco is better.

Maybe I am softer than I usually am but frankly Coco is what I expected, I did not want surprises or something lavish, I wanted quality, I wanted a beautiful animation and I wanted a good story and in my opinion Coco has all that.

*** By the way when the movie gets released, if you're not very interested In Frozen, skip the first half hour, Disney included the long and boring short of ''Olaf's Frozen Adventure'' and that was a very annoying experience. Ironically, the rest of the audiences here in Mexico also hated it so much that it was removed. I don't think that's going to happen in the US so that's why I'm preventing you.

The problem is that Miguel's great-great-grandfather abandoned his wife and daughter for the musician's career, and since then in the Rivera's house any melody is banned. There comes the Mexican Day of the Dead, and Miguel secretly goes to the city square to participate in the talent contest, but he does not have a guitar. He decides to "borrow" the instrument in the crypt of his idol - Ernesto de la Cruz - but, touching guitar, Miguel falls into the world of the dead. And if he does not get out of there until the morning, he will forever remain a skeleton.
Pixar is surprising again. This time - the ability to tell a very grown-up story by kids' language. As in the Oscar-winning "Inside Out", here we go on a journey, where the ultimate goal is homecoming, back to the family. Add to this juicy Mexican melodies, brilliant animation, and Pixar's sense of humor and you will get an unforgettable cocktail of all possible emotions. It is clear that the "Oscar" is already in their pocket.

Coco is a another DisneyPixar and it's directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, written by Lee Unkrich and voices-staring Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal and Benjamin Bratt.

Story by Jason Katz, Matthew Aldrich and Adrian Molina. Despite his family's baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.

The sins of this movie are existing, the biggest sin is the sense of humor, I didn't laugh a lot in this movie, it was just dark and tragedy. With its powerful message and story, I don't care about the comedy of this movie, but still, it's a very important element to see in an animation movie.

The next sin has a little spoiler, and it's the strange creatures in the dead's world, including the dog, I didn't like them, especially the dog.

The last sin is the long trip that got me bored, yeah, I got bored in the middle of this movie.

But Coco presents a great animation feature, fitting voices and a very powerful story.

I'm gonna give Coco a B+.

Thank you, guys for reading this review, and as always I welcome you comments.

Applausi a te, Pixar (mortacci).

Consigliato? Yupyupyup.

Every pixel is a delight to look at, you don't want to look away. I didn't know much about the beliefs beforehand, but I've really learned something from watching Coco about how the afterlife is viewed. The music was beautiful and I've been listening to the soundtrack since watching, "Remember Me' is my favourite track. The story was very predictable from the beginning, it was probably one of the most predictable storylines. However, a younger audience probably wouldn't be able to predict it anyway. I've watched enough Pixar films to predict how they end. Expand

Coco is a delight from start to finish. The characters are really really good, which is a compliment I haven't given to many recent PIXAR flicks. The music is also outstanding. The animation syncs so well with all the music especially when characters play guitar; the animation is once again extremely impressive, which has become a cliche to say. I always cry at the end of this movie, it moves me every time. This movie is also a great dive into Mexican culture, which was really cool to see. The skeletons look fantastic. The Land of the Dead is gorgeous and a really cool world to see. Coming right after Cars 3, this movie is a huge breath of fresh air. From here on out, I really enjoy the rest of PIXAR's movies (as of early 2021), and it started with Coco, which I consider to be the start of a PIXAR renaissance. Expand

I didn’t laugh at any of the jokes, nor did I find any of the characters endearing enough to justify dedicating almost two hours of my life to. Regardless, I saw it anyway; I’ve been attempting to see films I thought I won’t enjoy recently, but yet again, I’ve been surprised.

I will quickly say that I don’t think Coco is a masterpiece. I’m not entirely convinced it’s even ‘great’. I still enjoyed it, however, and that’s good enough for me.

The main talking point for the film seems to be the visuals, and for the most part, I can understand why. It’s certainly a very pretty film. You can see how much time and care went into each frame, and I can’t even comprehend being one of the animators on a project like this. With this said, however, I don’t feel I witnessed anything revolutionary in terms of animation. While my memory might be wrong, I believe this film to be on a similar level to Moana. That’s definitely not a negative; Moana’s probably my favourite animated film in recent memory, primarily due to it’s animation.

The brilliant visuals do bring a flaw, however. With all of the wondrous colours assaulting your vision, it comes full circle, and ceases to be impressive after a while. There is simply too much colour for me to enjoy the film as a whole. I’ll use a scene from Rogue One as an example. Regardless of your thoughts on the film, one of the final scenes featuring a certain Sith Lord was generally considered to be brilliant, at least amongst fans. The absence of colour, followed by the jarringly bright crimson adds to the scene, and doesn’t simply exist to be pretty to look at. Sometimes, less is more.

The soundtrack was rather mixed, too. Parts were very fitting, and added to the scene. Other parts, however, sounded like generic Disney filler that could have been pasted into any other film and work just as well.

Since the film features music, primarily guitars, rather prominently, I also found myself confused at moments; I heard somebody playing the guitar, but the character actually holding it wasn’t doing anything. It took me a few moments to realise it was actually the scoring.

Additionally, while this movie is obviously aimed for the family, I found many of the plot-points rather obvious. It intentionally makes it’s plot unnecessarily complicated in an attempt to fool you, but if you understand basic storytelling tropes, you’ll pick up on the plot rather promptly, even if the film changes specific elements just to surprise a few people. The film feels as though it’s trying to be surprising, and sad, and funny, rather than letting it’s scenes speak for themselves. Much of it feels forced, at least to me.

Many of the characters also weren’t particularly likeable. The main character, Miguel, comes across as a legitimately bad person many times in this film, and everyone else doesn’t fare much better. Obviously, the villain is cruel, but also those who we’re supposed to like are selfish and unpleasant. I thought that at the end perhaps they’d apologise and acknowledge their wrongdoings, but it never happens. Only Miguel has to change himself in this film, and he still gets everything he wants in the end anyway.

Overall, this film actually struggles to excel in specific areas. It’s very serviceable, with bits dipping below average, and others rising above. Thankfully, the pros manage to outweigh the cons, making Coco an enjoyable film, regardless of how simple it’s message is. I’ll give it a shaky 7/10, though if you enjoy all other Disney films, or the general aesthetic of the movie, you’ll most likely love this one.

The biggest one by far is that I found the film to be overstuffed with characters that are by no means essential to the plot, which is by the way quite thin and stretched at the same time. And it goes without saying that the approach they took to tell the story is indisputably unoriginal. Let alone the familiar themes the film tackles. What makes up for these problems are: the jaw-dropping animation, the vast and vibrant world that you can't help roaming over it in your mind, and the flawlessly-executed heartbreaking final act. I think the music and the songs are quite good, especially "Un Poco Loco" and of course the Oscar-wining "Remember Me".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I think it is a film that is far from perfect, contrary to what many people say, I do think that it stands out on its own merits. It is not the kind of movie ruined by something serious, but rather by many minor flaws and that even I admit that they can be a bit fussy. For example, we do not know why Miguel died when he took Ernesto de La Cruz's guitar, as well as why he was the only dead human who did not automatically become a skeleton. Neither, even though the movie tries to explain it, we don't really know why Imelda had such contempt for Hector. He died poisoned, and it would be hard to believe that no one realized this, almost as if he had never existed. Then the initial conflict, as well as the end, seemed a bit forced, I mean, just because a relative abandoned the family for music, would they think that another could do the same? And in the end they let Miguel keep playing just because Coco was happy at the end of the movie? I also have minor doubts as to why the dog became an alebrije, as well as why Imelda was the only one who owned one, but hey ... removing all the bad things that are somewhat minor things, the truth is that the movie itself has a plot more than solid, I must say that Hector took most of the scenes in the film. Miguel is not bad, although sometimes he is a little irritating together with some of the relatives, and Ernesto's plot twist was quite predictable and possibly when Disney already began to be known for this of the revelations of villains that presented them to you as someone well. I have no problem with this, but they don't even give it time to shine. Anyway, it's a good movie, it has good morals and more than decent characters, but it is overshadowed by several minor flaws that, while not ruining, prevent the experience from being very good. It was close to hitting an 8. Expand

He sets out to the Land of the Dead to change things. The story starts with plenty of pluck, but gets too serious and treads too slowly before the sweet finish. Even though there are a few enjoyable songs, it's not a musical. A few more might have helped. It feels too talky to appeal to younger viewers. The visually dazzling, beautifully colorful visuals are this movie's greatest assets. The chaotic story, lack of fun characters and extensive complications can't override the appeal of the beautiful visuals. NOTE: There was a 20-minute Frozen short that played before the feature, but because of numerous national complaints about the extended running time, it will no longer play as of 12/8. Expand

"No Music!"

"Coco" is a beautifully animated film with plenty of heart to go around, of course knowing it's from Pixar. How the film explores 'Day of the Dead' and it's world by taking a particular culture and doing something incredibly unique with it. Much better than "The Book of Life", I can say that. Each character having their own colorful personality which makes them a enjoy to watch.

You know for a family movie, it's packed with a lot of themes such as: death, murder, and aging, that was handled so maturely.

My issues with the movie is it's villain, because I didn't think this type of story needed one. I won't spoil anything, but doesn't really matter since a lot of twist and turns can be seen a mile way, it gets predicable at times especially towards the end. I'm sorry to say this but "Remember Me" isn't a good song. I mean, it was use well for only that scene, but try and sing it elsewhere, not so much.

Overall rating: If it's says Pixar on the tin, you know what you get. Despite my problems, it's still enjoyable and that ain't a bad thing.

How do you feel after a relative passes on? Sad? Afraid? Regretful? Doubtful? Relieved? Maybe you’ll remember your exact emotions after seeing Pixar’s newest celebration of family.

A young Mexican boy named Miguel lives with his mamá Luisa and papá Enrique, his little sister Socorro, his aunts Carmen and Gloria, his uncle Berto, his cousins Abel, Rosa, Benny and Manny, his grandparents Franco and Abuelita, and his great grandmother, Coco, together, they’re the Rivera family. The ancestors remain dear to the Riveras’ memories—well, except the father of Mamá Coco who left his family to pursue music. Today, all the Riveras, Grandma Abuelita in particular, took it to discipline anyone for touching an instrument.

On the other side, a dense city houses Mexico’s deceased souls alongside numerous other colorful spirit animals. When one of the inhabitants’ photographs is set out by the live family members in the local cemetery on Día de los Muertos, a gate designed to resemble an immigration system gives them the okay to cross the amber leaf bridge to see their loved ones. Miguel knew them for years only through stories and photographs, and now he finally meets them in person after stealing a famous musician’s guitar leaves him cursed. Miguel’s ancestors include great-great grandmother Imelda, Mamá Coco’s mother, the short Papá Julio, the plump Rosita, the horn-eyed Victoria, and the twins Felipe and Óscar; he must receive one of their blessings before sunrise, or else he will be stuck there forever.

But Miguel thinks he found another way home through his musical idol, Ernesto De La Cruz, his great-great uncle from the story! He even has a way to find De La Cruz: Héctor, a silly little man desperate to see his family again since they never once set out his photo. Then once a Shyamalan twist reveals why he wants to see his family again so bad, the true heartache comes full circle.

This production proves Pixar’s continually committed research, including the steps outlined in the Día de los Muertos ceremony. Especially amongst the world of the incarnate, beautiful leaves create relaxed candlelight glows, like the long celebrated fun creativity shined by the immortal hopping lamp! I’m sure it keeps accurate to Mexico’s family values, since audiences in Mexico were supposedly thrilled at the premiere, taking in $28 million since its October 27th release! The same level of effort goes to the voice actors: Anthony Gonzalez gives a true, soulful performance for Miguel, his musical voice as pure as child actors come, and the right cast surrounds him with further compassionate voices, whether dead or alive.

Yet once Miguel enters the afterlife, coincidences lead him to wherever the narrative takes him. Similar to what the revolutionary animation studio continues failing at, the details of the world prioritize comedy over realism. For instance, the undead skeletons drink liquor, but at the same time, say they need no bathrooms. Some other elements appear to contradict the hard research, such as English being the primary language spoken in a Mexican location. Pixar long succeeded in its widely-loved shorts without dialogue, so couldn’t they expand that format to a feature length? I mean, imagine if Coco was entirely in Spanish, except speech kept to a minimum? I think it would have made the experience a lot more authentic.

Looking deeper into the script’s issues, the title character, Mamá Coco, gets too little screen time to serve her plot importance justice; she just sits in her wheelchair, eyes half open, less prominent than her highest potential. The writers should have implemented the family theme further by giving each boy and girl (and dog) in the Rivera family a purpose.

In full honesty, the script’s issues stem from the protagonist, Miguel; he starts off whiny and selfish, in turn making his growth throughout less earned than its capacity. In fact, quite a few offensive moments seem tossed in for humor’s sake, specifically a brief unnecessary scene where Miguel notices a nude portrait model (a skeleton). The depiction of Mexico’s afterlife as truth rather than myth may also concern some more religious viewers. And finally, the gate used to allow Mexicans to pass through on Día de los Muertos almost parallels Trump’s future vision of his wall, which could offend some more conservative viewers.

Although Coco can overall still please anyone looking for a good holiday treat. These months are not always a happy time, considering the number of deaths around this time, so this special celebration of both life and death just might satisfy our hurt.
