Horror fans here’s the perfect Halloween movie to start off spooky season. Cobweb is sure to scare the sh!te out of you for just under 90 minutes.

Eight-year-old Peter (Woody Norman) lives an isolated life, with no friends and kept away from normal childhood activities by his overly protective and clearly unhinged parents (Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr). Things go from bad to worse when Peter starts hearing mysterious knocking sounds coming from inside the walls of his bedroom. Dismissed by his parents, his fear intensifies and upon investigating, he begins to unravel a dark secret that his parents have kept hidden for years. Turns out having Homelander as your dad is not the scariest thing in poor Peter’s life.

What begins as a seemingly run-of-the-mill ghost story gradually takes on new levels of sinister until it’s dark secret is finally revealed. Cobweb turned out to be much more than a generic horror movie. It’s a gothic tale that’s highly atmospheric and packed full of tension that had the entire cinema gripped and more importantly scared. There’s nothing more disappointing than a horror movie that fails at it’s main task, to scare the viewer and not only does Cobweb have lots of frights packed into it, but also deals with disturbing topics that succeeds in putting you on edge right away and doesn’t let up with the sense of unease and impending dread.

Cobweb doesn’t waste a single minute. It teases various clues to you throughout and doesn’t reveal anything to you sooner than you need to. It also doesn’t waste time plotsplaining things to you. Generally you’ll always get a scarier and more interesting horror movie when you successfully build it around real-life terrors and Cobweb does that very well. It does however feel like they were unsure how exactly to end it and as a result you’re left with a rather abrupt ending. But I can forgive that because of everything else it’s got going for it.

Between The Boogeyman, Talk to Me and now Cobweb it’s been great to see more scary and original horror movies in cinemas recently. The more the better. Cobweb is a creative horror, that’s as creepy as it is twisted with a very dark theme and what more could you ask for? It’s the perfect Halloween movie and definitely recommended for the horror fans, particularly anyone who enjoyed The Shining and Barbarian.

The Good
I really enjoyed this film; at about 82 minutes it is the perfect length for a horror film. Despite the short length, the film never feels rushed. Since this is a supernatural horror film, you know that more is going on than first seems, and the way the film uses the parents is really impressive, you are never too sure if they are evil abusive parents, or just over protective ones, due to what they know.

I have tried not to spoil the main plot points, and you are probably wondering why the film is called Cobweb, when I have yet to mention spiders. Now there are no giant spiders in the film, a few small ones that don't really affect the plot, it is more towards the final scene that you will understand the name of the film.

I am so used to seeing Antony Starr as Homelander that I hardly recognised him at first with dark hair. But the real star of the film is Woody Norman as the young boy Peter. He puts in a great performance, he will pull just enough sympathy from you the viewer, without ever becoming annoying or unlikeable.

The Bad
Ok, I have to do this, and I hate to, but it must be said, when the film gets towards the climax, everything gets very dark, I understand it is a low budget, so you use the dark to hide some effects, but it is so dark, like way too dark that you can barely see what is going on. You know there is going to be a climax with the Sarah character, and they really do leave it to nearly the very end before you get a clear shot of her, but in the dark I feel like perhaps it is not enough of a reveal to please most viewers.

With that said, that is probably my only complaint about the film. Everything else I thought was great, and I do understand why low budget films have to use the dark, but it is frustrating as up until that point I was so invested.

Overall
"Cobweb" is a gripping and atmospheric horror film that leaves a lasting impression. With an outstanding cast, an intricate plot, and a skilful blend of psychological horror and supernatural elements, the film takes audiences on a haunting journey into the depths of darkness. It's a testament to the genre's potential for exploring not just external terrors, but the demons that lurk within the human psyche. There is potential for a sequel, if they decide to go that way.

I enjoyed the film, and highly recommend it to horror fans everywhere that prefer less of the gratuitous gore and jump scares, and more of a slow build full of tension.

I score Cobweb a solid 8.5/10

Cobweb is a bit slow to get into but the last half is a lot more action packed and interesting. Lizzy Caplan does a great job of playing eccentric and enigmatic per usual.

Good movie. Slight complexity to it. Characters aren't as engaging as I thought they would be. Manages to keep you interested. Also feels unique. Could have been better though

Parts of the movie had promise but it also felt like the writers just had a lot of interesting ideas but didn't know what to do with them. The result was a sloppy movie with disinteresting characters you didn't really care if they lived or died.
