I think that Abrams did a fantastic job making people feel right in the center of an actual monster attack (despite it not being a 3D movie). However, there is still not enough clarification to go with this (even after watching it, you still don't know what the hell this monster is...) and some parts were a little dull (the opening scene was horrendously boring....). It was great for a while but shakey cam was pretty annoying. The movie used some guy's stupid going away party as a plot device so that when the monsters came, they'd all be together. The monster's origin wasn't even hinted at, leaving their existance and origin left COMPLETELY open for interpretation. I'm all for making the viewer think, but that was just lazy writing. The end, aka "Thanks for your money", tried to use "the camcorder as the storyteller" but completely failed. Massive disappointment. Expand

I find that if I go into a movie with modest expectations, I am rarely disappointed. That's probably true of most of us. So, not having got caught up in all the "viral" hype that preceded this, I have to give the film pretty high marks. So, not having got caught up in all the "viral" hype that preceded this, I have to give the film pretty high marks. It kept my attention and had me rooting for at least one or two of the yuppies to survive. The herky-jerky camera wasn't as bad as I had heard. There are even scenes when it's held pretty still, allowing the viewers to catch their collective breath. Overall, a skillfully made film with decent performances, and a few effective moments of true tension and fear. Long live Godzilla :-) Expand

Boring, lifeless movie. I decided to give it a 1 just because of all the talk it has created. Anyone who gives this movie higher than a 6 is either: mentally retarded, smokes pot, or is a liberal arts major.

Generally, we like camp in our B-movies, with poor dialogue and bad actors. It usually makes what happens to them enjoyable, instead of unfortunate or sad. Cloverfield has a pretty good script, and it was really well-casted. They don't bore you with a lot of words. Sometimes the camera does all the talking. It drew me in, just couldn't help it. The only thing that bothered me was that the action sequences, being in 1st person, made you feel like you were in a simulator at a theme park, only your seat doesn't move. It actually could have benefited from that, regardless how corny that might be. Still, it was pretty freakin' sweet. Highly recommend it in the theater. It's not going to work well on a TV at home. I If I could give this move a negative score I would. Camera work was so bad even in the non-action parts (like at the party) I almost threw up in the first 15 minutes of the movie due to motion sickness, the movie went downhill from there. I understand the camera concept but even if you are running or scared you're telling me you can't hold a camera semi-still so we could actually see what was going on instead of just getting sick from the blurring back and forth. And in the non-action parts why the heck could this guy not look at people's faces instead of the camera being pointed at their feet or only half their face. Bad acting, no real story, NOTHING in this movie was done right, EXCEPT the credits and those were only good because it meant the movie was over. Not only do I wish I could get my $6.25 back (luckily I went to the late show so it was not $9.00) but I think someone should reimburse me for wasting 1 1/2 hours of my life. If I want to pay to get motion sick I will go to an amusement park at least there you will find lovable characters and loads of entertainment, two things this movie lacked. I did not care if the characters lived or not, in fact I was hoping they would all die so the movie would end. The fact that there is no story proves the writer is not really a writer, he could not even think of a plausible reason this monster attacked, where it was from, how to kill it, NOTHING. Other movie goers were as confused and disappointed as I was based on their after movie chatter. On guy asked "what just happened" and I said "I'll tell you, you wasted $6.25 and 1 1/2 hours of your life". Another movie goer said "there is 1 1/2 of my life wasted that I will never get back". Also I never knew cheap handheld home video cameras had night vision, professional style lighting and such AMAZING and long lasting video and battery life. I could go on and on about how awful and completely retarded this movie is but it's not even worth talking about honestly. Please, if you feel the need to waste $9.00, just send me the money and stay home, don't waste your time on this movie. Expand

Though unexplained here, unlike in The Host, a monster appears in an urban area, this time Manhattan. The movie is presented as a video being shot by one party goer who has been assigned to video interview those at a going away party. When catastrophe hits, the videgoer is forced to wander about outside with others, thus rendering the video even more frequently jerky, and at times, not horizontal as the camera is dropped or fallen with. And in an interesting juxtaposition, because the video tape being used had previous images on it, you also see interspersed a record of better times. The movie is like Blair Witch meets Godzilla in New York City; quite implausible, but very exciting. Unlike Blair Witch, which I found to be totally uninteresting (I didn't care for any character, and as a group, found them all to act like some moronic cult on a mission), this movie dealt with a group of more or less normal yuppies who were forced to react to their disturbed environment. This is a very creative and entertaining movie, although those looking for super state-of-the-art technical effects or spectacular color images will be disappointed. Expand

I found the intimacy of the hand-held camera effect a viseral pleasure -- as if I was walking (or running) through the movie rather than just watching it. While it's a cliche to compare a movie to a roller coaster ride, the experience was very much like the fun of a good ride. I also enjoyed the dry humor. But I came out of the movie from a truly unique experience that none of the negative reviewers seemed to grasp. This is something brand new. The effects are spectacular and are grounded in real life. They are right in pointing out that the characters don't get beyond much yelling and oh-my-god-ing, but I think it's realistic. I think many people were trying to search for some kind of meaning out of it, some kind of deeper metaphor, but I actually like the fact that you are not given much information at all, it's all still a mystery after seeing it. They are not suppose to please your every need. The shaky camera was a perfect effect on the movie, because for one, It makes us, the viewers, become more envolved with the movie, as if we were running from the monster and taping it ourselves. Sure, the first 30 minutes were not as exciting as the rest of the film. Get over it, what are they suppose to do, just put you in the middle of the attack and not explain the background of the day? The ending was a cliffhanger, and if you don't like that, then i really don't suggest this movie for you, but you should of seen it coming because one of the producers, J.J. Abrahms happens to be the king of cliffhangers. I happen to think the cliff hanger ending is perfect, It leaves it open for a sequel, which is in talks. So people that rate this movie 0's and 1's because of the cliffhanger, or shaky camera, please watch some other movies from Blockbuster, and learn to appreciate that Cloverfield has its own unique genre, which is very good. I thought the camera was a problem in a movie like the Bourne Ultimatum. It didn't bother me much if at all in this movie. The ending works because it is open for interpretation and it looks like it will lead to another movie. There is also many things that happen that some may miss and you may need to watch again to pick up. The best part is that this movie, in this style, is realistic and exciting especially in theatres. By the way, anyone who says you don't see the monster, must be blind and I say that with no disrespect because you clearly see the monster. Expand

It is quite consuming, as long as you suppress the notion that people who are in this much fear of their life would most likely switch off the camera well before some of the events which occur. Where the movie falls short is in describing where the beast came from, what exactly were the small ones accompanying it (were they spawn or genetically unrelated and just along for the ride) and what happened afterward. Yes the camera was super shaky....I'd like to see an amateur camera person that has missiles flying all around them and a 25 story monster killing everything in sight shoot that with a steady hand. This movie is supposed to be shot from a realistic point of view. And how much more real can you get from a random bloke on the street running for his life? I would've liked a little explanation about the monster but at the same time that's what made it so exciting for me. What the f*ck was that thing? Where did it come from? It got my brain thinking of all these crazy scenarios which made it so much more fun to watch. The whole movie for me was just so real seeming. For me it completely captured the chaos and craziness that probably would've ensued had something like that happen. I loved it and wouldn't have done it any other way. Bravo. Expand

The premise of the camcorder being found in what was ONCE known as Central Park led me to an int eresting conclusion that throughly destroys the intended plot. The military referred to what was called Operating Hammerdown. I can only surmise that this involved some VERY SERIOUS weaponry. Perhaps a small yield nuclear warhead was used. The fact that area was ONCE KNOWN as Central Park lets me know that the area was completely and utterly devasted!. If this were the case then someone PLEASE tell me HOW in the world did the Camcorder survive? High-yield fuel air explosive weapons would have melted the thing and a nuclear explosion would have vaporized it. The premise of a camcorder surving wih perfect picture and sound recordings is absurd. Before you go and say that it was restored then why are there no gaps in continuity? Surely some of the action would have been irretrievable. NUFF SAID! Expand

The opening party scene is forgettable and doesn't really do anything to give the main players more than one dimension. However, once the action explodes...um, literally, 'Cloverfield' becomes a fascinating experiment, despite the fact that it's also a bit frustrating. I'm not sure that the actors truly sold a significant "I'm here! This is happening!" perspective. Rather than implanting an impression of realism and reactive instinct, I found the performances to be too self conscious and modulated, more theater than verismo. The premise is fantastic. The 'things left unseen' approach works for most of the film. And, I think the action was accessible enough to carry the film through the lulls. Whether the 'camcorder' photography remains a novel or gimmicky approach, it's a bit of a toss up. Despite the flaws, including a deep lack of story momentum, I found the film entertaining. It's a truly brilliant film,, good acting (perhaps a bit too over the top at times) but most of all was how gripping it was and how it held your attention. Yes the camera scenes aren't perfect, but they add an eerie realism to the overall experience. I quite liked how the characters were people you couldn't really identify or want to know...what the movie does is show that all types of people, whether we like them or not, unify in a crisis. Except the face of the monster, which, because of the camerawork, isn't clear. What begins as a story that seems decidedly human quickly devolves into cliches (the lost love, the frantic search for lost love, the panicky, bewildered looks of those in danger, the poor decision making skills of self-appointed leaders) that become more tiresome when you realize that The Camera Is Still Rolling; that is, the poor sap who's following his friends around during a rampage is still holding a camera. (This plot hole is remedied in one dumbshit line: "The world will need to know what happened!" or something equally asinine). Drop it and run, pal. Speaking of the camerawork, the POV is interesting for the first twenty minutes, but becomes tedious as the plot and "near escapes" become progressively more preposterous. The principal characters survive multiple attacks: one seems to be impaled (but lives), three are in a helicopter crash - and survive!, and two watch a friend devoured alive... but the monster leaves them alone. All this would be made palpable if the acting was clever, witty, or pulled more than just Acting 101 grab-bag crap, but it doesn't. From the cameraman's incessant "What's going on?! Where's Rob going?!" to the farewells before the ending (which are hilariously awful, cherry-picking from The Blair Witch Project), the actors' "spontaneity" is never fully convincing. This film was a huge letdown. Expand

What kind of cam-corder was that? I want one. It's tougher than a cockroach. It survives drops, helicopter crashes, monster thrashes and electromagnetic pulses from a nuke! 3. Beth was an alien. It's remarkable how she didn't bleed to death after being impaled on re-bar and had full use of her arm and shoulder in that last scene. And, by the way, if you liked the way this was filmed, just put your tv in the dryer. It's a lot cheaper than renting crappy movies. Expand

Requires some imagination, which most people have sadly lost. Hollywood does NOT need to explain everything...sometimes, the scariest things are the ones you don't see, and in this case, the unknowns (where did the monster come from? was the military able to beat it? what the hell was that thing that fell into the water @ the very end, and how did that tie into the creature?) allowed me to use my imagination to fill in the blanks. A future classic. Expand

Part of it was because of the nausea-inducing camera work which got me close to throwing up several times, and the other reason was that after half an hour, there was no plot, no story arc or character development. I give it 3 points for the clever marketing campaign, which tricked a lot of people (including myself) to give their hard-earned money to watch this movie, only to leave the theatres nauseous and disappointed. Once again (like in War of the Worlds) some ill conceived group of people, who are so unlikable, air-headed and preposterously good looking, you could swear they were from another movie, is thrown at the audience as if to say: 'Hi folks, these are your protagonists for this evening's entertainment. We apologize for any inconvenience.' Why do we once again have to suffer through the most impressive collection of jawdroppingly dumb yuppies, whose existence somehow seems to revolve around spewing the most vapid conversation around like if it was a sport. Cloverfield has some very impressive and convincing CGI, but when are we finally going to get treated to this art-form in a movie together with a great story and on par dialog? Transformers, another CGI wonder, was nearly unwatchable for the exact same reason. I realize that it's a cliché when I say that this movie could and should have been SO much better. Not in gritty realism, it covers that bit quite well (although I would have preferred some sort of mix of steady-cam and not-steady-cam footage, but rather through a decent plot, a decent (and relevant) build-up and a feasible script. I really enjoyed this movie, i think the beginning was slow only because they had to introduce all the characters. And also setup the whole plot of the story. And also setup the whole plot of the story. I'm guessing the people who said there was no plot didn't watch carefully enough or listen. The plot actually begins to develop after the attack begins, and from that point the plot is very simple they set out to rescue beth. I personally wouldn't have done this if i were him i would have got the heck on a chopper and escaped the area. The ending of the movie is to be expected for this genre, as we all know there was a part two for the Blair witch project and Godzilla. And i've also heard abroad that if could be a second movie in the works. Movies like these you don't want to rush, i also liked how everything was kept secret until the movie actually came out. I hate those movies previews when they have to show everything . As for the origins of the creature its possible the creature was lying dormant this whole time until it was awoken possibly from that oil tanker? Maybe they were drilling deep for oil and woke it up? Anyways if you haven't seen this movie yet i urge you to buy the DVD or seek a copy my some other means and watch it you won't be disappointed. Expand

Fantastic movie but I needed to see more angles.... Is there any other videocam picked up? So he's the only one filming it, how about security cameras or the army or from reporters from helicopters? right.
