Adrian Brody channels Travis Bickle, pays homage to Martin Scorcese, and in the end takes out the trash

Adrien Brody not only stars, but also produced, co-wrote the screenplay and composed the music, so you can expect a bit of a self-indulgent vanity project. Anytime the first thing you hear is an inner monologue, you're in for pretention. Anytime the first thing you hear is an inner monologue, you're in for pretention. He plays a garbage collector determined to stay clean, from drugs and his previous (bad) life. Natch, something happens in his relatively self-contained world that causes his previous violent side to emerge. After a rather uninteresting hour, the expected revenge erupts in a bloody, but confusingly-staged killing spree. Brody relishes this opportunity to be haunted by his past, but when the pivotal event is revealed, it's an unrealistic stretch for tragic effect. While the bearded Brody manages sufficient charisma to keep it from being an utter bore, the film never builds much dramatic tension or emotional effect.… Expand

Adrien Brody's career has been plagued by lousy and forgettable films over the last 10 years and Clean only arrives to add itself to that list, and is all the more surprising for the fact that Brody produced and wrote this story, which IAdrien Brody's career has been plagued by lousy and forgettable films over the last 10 years and Clean only arrives to add itself to that list, and is all the more surprising for the fact that Brody produced and wrote this story, which I think are the only reasons why he's clearly committed to the role.

Other than that, the sharp pacing and technical achievements save it from getting completely lost beyond its own inability to be more engaging.… Expand

Not great, not terrible, short, brief John Wick from under the hood

Intersting story, but it was pretty rushed from the second part of the movie. It had some flaws, but I expected to be bored at most of times. I wasn't, so I'm pleased. INot great, not terrible, short, brief John Wick from under the hood

What a waste of time. How can a 1 hour and 34 minute film feel so damn long?

Brody spends way too much time moping and brooding in slow motion over a character who's lost before we joined the film is focused on for a huge portion, to the point where you just want to say "get over it". The entire pacing of this movie is so off-putting that when the action finally does come, you're already numb to it. Many of it's themes are also incredibly on the nose. Hunting for vengeance? Let's hang some game heads behind you in this scene. Trying to clean up your past? I got it, let's just call you clean. Let's also make you a garbage man to top it off. I mean who the hell wrote this?
The movie also steals many of it's better parts (if there are any) from way better movies while somehow doing what they did much worse. It'll make sense once you see it in action. Speaking of action, when it hits, the parts you can see are decent. Unfortunately all action scenes take place in the dark. My guess is they wanted to save money on effects and choreography. Do yourself a favor and avoid Clean if you can. I do want to mention Ritchie Merritt (from White Boy Rick) does an incredible job with what he was given and almost seems like he's in a different film altogether. 2 of those points are for that. The other one is for the mediocre action.… Expand
