FOR ABOUT HALF its length, City Slickers is a close-to-perfect movie comedy...Crystal, Stern and Kirby are good comedians, but they fall apart when the script does. Only cinematographer Dean Semler (''Dances With Wolves'') has his vision, and the film looks great from start to finish.
Crystal is funny in City Slickers but the film is flat and makes the desert feel as cramped and airless as a basement nightclub. [7 June 1991]

A great example of when comedy has some depth. Billy Crystal delivers, Daniel Stern surprises, and Jack Palace is like an character that came from a different movie that was award worthy. It explains why he won the Oscar for best supporting actor.

A decent enough comedy whose strength lies in the performances of it's leads (Crystal, Kirby, Palance & Stern) as well as some excellent cinematography.
