Outstanding film, no question.

'Citizen Kane', at least to me, feels like such a unique film in terms of how it is brought to life - I don't recall seeing anything that exactly matches it in that regard. It's thoroughly entertaining, I do love how it is crafted together. The score is terrific and the performances from the cast are excellent.

Orson Welles, the director too of course, is perfect for the titular role. He is sensational, it must be said. He makes Charles Foster Kane absolutely fascinating, despite the questionable nature of the character. I basically enjoyed everyone else who came onscreen, the more memorable ones being Joseph Cotten (Jedediah) and Dorothy Comingore (Susan) - George Coulouris (Thatcher) has a few amusing moments, also.

The editing and pacing are two other things that impressed me, as did the fantastic News on the March opening. This is one of those films that I've heard about for as long as I can remember, so I'm glad to finally get it watched - added to the fact it didn't disappoint.

Citizen Kane. What will you leave behind. An ambiguous movie. On the one hand, it's rather boring, but on the other hand, it makes you think about how we live and why. No matter how hard Kane tries, life cannot be built the way you want it.

It's a really nice movie, but "The Best Movie Ever Made"? No. Maybe the most important or influential, but not the best ever made, or at least, not anymore. Though I still consider Orson Welles to be brillant.

The most acclaimed element of the film the camera work, which is still to this day impressive. But it isn't just there to be flashy, it helps to tell the story. The shot of Kane walking through the mirrors might be the most depressing shot in history. The cinematography isn't the only innovative part of this film. The movie opens with the protagonist dying, and then his life is told in flashbacks, a revolutionary idea for 1941. The narrative structure and the cinematography are usually what is talked about in reviews of Citizen Kane (And they are amazing), but other aspects of the film are just as good. The performances from the mercury actors are all phenomenal, keep in mind they all had to age fifty years for their roles. The script (the only thing that won an Oscar) is also fantastic, the Bernstein monologue being one of the stand out moments. Bernard Herman's score is also great, I love the music that plays when reading Thacher's account of Kane's childhood and at the end of the film (I won't spoil what it is showing in case you haven't seen it). Citizen Kane is as close to perfect as a film can get, if you haven't seen it watch it now! Expand

Finally, I got to watch Citizen Kane, and there is no confusion about why this is commonly considered one of the greatest films of all-time. I watched many movies that have been described as "Revolutionary" and "Game-changing". But besidesFinally, I got to watch Citizen Kane, and there is no confusion about why this is commonly considered one of the greatest films of all-time. I watched many movies that have been described as "Revolutionary" and "Game-changing". But besides that Citizen Kane really deserve to be called so more than any movie I've watched in my life, it's could be the oldest movie that is as influential as it is timeless. I felt I was watching a movie the has been released couple years ago, except it's shot in black and white. An ecstasy of light and shadow, of clashing textures and graphic forms. A haunting cinematography that makes Citizen Kane one of the best-looking movies to date. an exuberant use of camera placement and movement and inventive lighting. Yes, it's above all a visual achievement. But all these innovative techniques shouldn't be questioned whether they still hold up or not. Because they don't just hold up to this day, but they are as fresh and contemporary as they were in 1941. But all that is from the technical standpoint, so what about the screenplay, the narrative, the story?

As Orson Welles took many risks directing Citizen Kane he also took risks writing it's Oscar-winning script with Herman J. Mankiewicz. And of course by risks I mean the unprecedented use of flashbacks, and the non-linear storytelling. And While I can't say this way of storytelling paid off perfectly, I have to admit that this structure has changes the game forever in film-making. It took me a while to be engaged with the characters, and the story itself. That's because the pacing was confusingly fast at the beginning, and some important aspects and details in the story needed to be more focused on. It also dragged, and almost lost me a couple of times. As I mentioned above, the build up for the titular character could've been way better, at least to make me invested in the character from the start.

With that being said, the more the time goes, the more I became engaged with the story, and invested in all the characters, not only Charles Kane. And I couldn't help but hope for some explanation about the fate of Kane. After some more minutes, I realized that Citizen Kane is a character study, actually, a very complex and compelling one. The story became more poignant and moving. By the way, if you still haven't watched Citizen Kane because you think it's a pretty serious and bleak film, you better watch it ASAP. Because it's actually funny! Yes, sometimes it's funny in a cynical way, but it is always a light-hearted movie, and easy to watch. But that doesn't mean it's a feel-good movie at all. As I mentioned, it the story becomes more touching and emotional as it proceeds, and it's represented in a flashback structure to reveal some mysteries about a publishing tycoon's rise and fall who dies corrupt and alone. So I think you get the point.

All the performances are impeccable, and Orson Welles' performance is as terrific as his direction. Also, Joseph Cotten is great as always. Also, the dialogue is so clever, and there are a fair share of very subtle lines.

Citizen Kane is far from perfect, IMO. Nevertheless, it somehow lives up to its reputation as a landmark achievement in film. But what's striking now is how utterly modern it is in direction. (8/10)

And there is great reason for it. At its core it follows the story of Charles Foster Kane, a newspaper publisher soon to be politician. The film is mostly told through flashbacks allowing the audience to see Kane's life journey and how he develops into who he is by the end of the film. The great story is backed up by amazing performances and direction that only add to the overall effect. When the film first released it also set many new standards for cinema. The cinematography and lighting specifically are done so well in each scene. The way each shot is composed and lit conveys certain emotions and messages unlike any movie before its time. The use of music and sound is also very important and is executed very effectively. As a whole, Citizen Kane is a fantastically crafted film that all should see. Expand

Perfect use of film reels for plot, like putting the plot i the pillow shots. What a fantastic study in narcissism, he lived his whole life with no empathy, he refused to consider the perspectives of others. Pretty good, 'you don't love me, you just want me to love you.' The dialog is amazing. 'i see, it's you that this is being done to, not me at all.' His wife had the best lines. Also, the thesis is about how most of our wounds come from early childhood, the worst may come trying to prevent some other thing that was the worst, his mom sent him away to protect him from his dad, but regardless of that and wealth, Kane became injured all the same, like it was in his genes. he was made narcissistic as a child, before he was sent away, the mom was clearly too beat down to love him and his dad was too angry to love him really. it is very much a Freudian movie, interesting to consider if it was a Jungian movie it would be called 'Citizen Neo' Expand

don't tell me you're sorry..

Citizen Kane

Depicting a marriage within few minutes or even a career of an entertainer represents a keen and devoting man behind the camera as it probably is the first time the cinema must have encountered a 'biography' genre film with such powerful sequence and fast paced acts. Citizen Kane is considered to be one of the few masterpieces ever to be set in cinema history but for me it doesn't quite works for I fail to connect it on the first instinct and the soul of it as its genre is something that I can't seem to understand but having said that I can definitely observe and appreciate the craft ensemble by the actors and projecting it majestically along with the writers and makers who are not only completely attentive to each and every frame of it but speaks the cinematic language through their work. And as its genre suggests and asks for, Orson hasn't let it down through out the course of it pushing Citizen Kane onto the major league with the help of a gripping screenplay, stellar performances and some nail biting sequences that genuinely oozes brutality and humanity in the characters.

Directed and written by Orson Welles, who also gives life to the lead role, this film also has the participation of other players and is considered by many the best film ever made.

First of all, its necessary to clarify one thing: despite the opinions of many people consider this movie the best ever, these considerations are ALWAYS subjective and likely to be discussed. Each person has the right to think of another way, like it or not, period. Now let's get down to business.

When I saw this movie for the first time I was not able to understand or to see why it was so acclaimed by critics. Currently I'm most able to understand the reasons. The actors glittered in their roles, particularly Welles, who would become one of the film's biggest names in his time. The script is simple, but it tells a good story, which addresses such important issues as the simplicity and true happiness. Its a film made with love by those involved, where every detail has been thought and rethought. The use of non-linear narrative, through the use of constant flashbacks, allows the public to see the life of the deceased millionaire, a missing character, but always present. The scenarios are excellent and even the camera angles were thought innovatively. For all that, this film was considered a landmark. It doesn't have a history that goes stay forever in our memory, but it was a film that showed to the industry that certain narrative techniques, light, shooting etc. were truly possible.

So, my advice is to forget the critics, specialists and experts. Forget that is an acclaimed film and see the movie, enjoy the film before you think about it.

Boring. The movie is about a person that can only receive love, but cannot give it back. Also, Cameron Monaghan looks just like Orson Welles.

Orson Wells brainchild is a distinctive then overlooked catalyst in the evolution of film making. Citizen Kane is deserving of it's status as how it set standards in its cinematography, storytelling and performances that haven't even been met in our time is telling. The story feels biographical as it does a mystery or drama . The script is quick witted, empathetic and sharp in every sense as it slowly shows just how inconsequential money can be when it's abundance is equal to the lack therefore of meaningful relationships. Charlie Kanes tragic life begins when he's removed from his childhood home following his father's death to be trained to take on the Kane fortune, that removal from the only parents he knew too being surrounded by people who either work for him or are in awe of his heritage creates a very materialistic understanding of love that goes on to destroy almost all the relationships he values. There's a melancholy to the final scene where all of the things he owns and his big house are just sprawled and being appraised ,like scavenging vultures, because for a while those were all he had. At least until he died. Expand

There are numerous impressive movements and details caught by the camera that lead us to draw particualr conclusions about both the characters and the scenes they are producing. The work of lights and shadows is highly interesting : this gave birth to gorgeous sequences and unavoidable effects on protagonists. Overall (and with a few exceptions), the actors' performances are terrific, especially Welles'. Backgrounds and environments are skillfully set up. It is like if I could see the colours of it behind their white-black-grey textures. Characters' last words are really meaningful and give the story more beauty.

The story is interesting but I often had the impression that I didn't know where the film was going. We see the investigation going on and on and have no clue for what seems hours and hours. This contributes to give to 'Citizen Kane' the 'boring' side many people find in it. However I must admit that the narrative (helped by cross-fades and flashbacks used with mastery) is really surprising. Its length and the precipitation of the ending were two other features I would identify as 'flaws'. If the last manages to close the movie on a poetic side, I couldn't help but think 'all for this only ? Really ?' One last defect is that I found the film repeats itself a bit too much. Characters aswer many things we already know, and even the camera shows informations we already possessed. Eventually it is an interesting American 'success' story : don't hope to see and hear anything else than the so-called never-equaled beauty of the dreamland of the United States of America.

I definitely should rewatch it but on first sight it deserves its title of best movie ever as long as we only consider the massive contributions 'Citizen Kane' had on modern cinema.

I can see why this is regarded as a classic. It's sadly still quite relevant today, the main themes being greed, power and manipulation (in this case of a newspaper readership), plus fame or notoriety, I suppose. The person it made me thinkI can see why this is regarded as a classic. It's sadly still quite relevant today, the main themes being greed, power and manipulation (in this case of a newspaper readership), plus fame or notoriety, I suppose. The person it made me think of, from more contemporary times, is Rupert Murdoch. I imagine I'm not the only one to think that. It's a somewhat thought provoking watch, I just wish it wasn't as relevant as it still is, frankly. I'd like to point out that most of the film doesn't entirely focus on the crime aspect, i.e. in depth analysis of who may have done what, its more biographical in nature but its certainly a good watch. Here are a couple of memorable quotes - 'He's got old age. It's the only disease people don't look forward to being cured of.'

'You never should have married a newspapaer men - their worse than sailors!' (the mind boggles)

Yes, I'd recommend it.

This movie was the biggest steaming pile of s*** I’ve ever watched in my entire life. Horrible acting and story flow make it nearly unwatchable. I get that it was released in 1941. I get that. It was one of the first of its kind, ok, I understand. But that alone shouldn’t rescue it from all of its faults. I’m sure there are plenty of artistes who went to film school and have been told of this movie’s greatness and all the reasons why it is a masterpiece. Then they regurgitate that line to the next generation, and this lie keeps perpetuating through the ages. But this film should be judged for what it is. It seems impossible to me that this rating should be anywhere near 100%. People are either lying to themselves or trying to be part of the artiste bandwagon. I’m sure that in the film world, if you don’t like Cotizen Kane, then you’re some sort of country bumpkin, philistine ding dong who just can’t understand the underlying qualities that make this picture so divinely exquisite. But anyone who comes back down to earth for 2 hours will see this movie for what it is: a bold accomplishment in early filmmaking that, when viewed in its historical context, can be appreciated for the boundaries it pushed and trails it blazed for films that came after, but that it is simultaneously a steaming pile of s*** of a film that borders on unwatchably bad. I just watched this film interestingly today, in light of the fact that clearly it should be incredible or something to that effect.

I'm recently persuaded that the main individuals who really like this rubbish, are old to the point that they are starting to go decrepit and are having not kidding mental issues.

Above all else, the coordinating. It's only completely terrible. Simply a ton of talking and whimpering. Where could all the activity have been? Where could the climactic fight have been?

Presently I've heard that this film should be about youth. For what reason doesn't Kane just battle his adolescence? brief scene toward the end where kane in a real sense thoroughly demolishes a more youthful kane utilizing the sled. It would be graceful, and such an improvement of the awful consummation we get in the real film.

Next we have the altering. So awful. Simply decide on which story you will tell. Quit changing between various ones continually you schizo. Did your manager blow up and simply begin assaulting the film and sticking it together like a baby does with their "specialty"? Cause it sure seems as though it.

After that we have the alleged "advancement". This film Is so nonexclusive I can scarcely even beginning with this point. I've seen this load of stuff previously.More so than the overseer of kane was. Orson welles is such a misrepresentation with such stupid endeavors at "advancements". Assuming they are so inventive orson, why have I seen them all previously. Hah. Checkmate.

At long last, we have the primary storyline itself. Kane is so stressed over his adolescence continually. For what reason doesn't he basically grow up as of now!

There, film is settled. What a crazy plothole.

Taking everything into account. Citizen kane is an exaggerated catastrophe of a film, and orson welles is a horrendous chief.

He once obviously said that you could get the hang of filmmaking in a day and a half. Well it sure resembles that is comparably lengthy as he spent on any of them!

You'll find yourself looking for the film technique and realize you've been duped into viewing a person coming to terms with film as art. Typical acting, and an ending that makes you livid that you even tuned in. While I admire the modernism of the technique Welles used, this is by no means the way I remember Welles. It seems far more important and significant to remember Welles as a modern artist who believed firmly that racism was a disease that required eradication. Expand
