Summary: After learning of her widowed mother Betty's imminent wedding plans, Keri Rothberg, a divorced artist, decides to attempt the drive South at Christmastime, bringing her two children, April and Josh, along. Her neighbor, Kevin Williamson, a veteran, haunted by ghosts from his past, agrees to help her drive. Keri hears a warning from an inexplicable supernatural voice just before the road trip begins. During the drive Kevin tells of the loss of a close Army buddy. Keri speaks of her teenage brother's death in a car accident. Kevin reveals he has a daughter living in Georgia. Eventually Keri and Kevin argue over who is to be driving. Realizing how little she actually knows about the man she is traveling with, Keri becomes extremely suspicious of Kevin. Road anxiety leads to incidents involving the Highway Patrol, followed by life-threatening difficulties on the road, and observations of Christmas traditions. When they arrive at Betty's, Kevin learns something new and departs abruptly. Following the wedding of her mother Betty to Paul, Keri receives an explanatory letter the next day which has a devastating effect upon her.
