It has no idea what tone it wants to go for, characters make unbelievably dumb (albeit expected) choices and many of the kills and scares are telegraphed. Plus the Chucky doll looks awful. Just a waste of time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was never excited for this movie, but decided to give it a chance and watched it instead of Toy Story 4. I've made a big mistake.

I'm a fan of the original trilogy (don't like the funny Chucky sequels) and I thought this was gonna be at least a semi-serious horror film, but it's stupid. The reason Chucky goes haywire is stupid, Aubrey Plaza is Andy's mom which I thought was his sister and she's annoying. They add stupid MCU-style jokes by annoying characters I wish had died within the first 5 seconds of their introduction, but it never happens. The fat friend says a goddamn joke when Andy shows the skinned face of a victim on a watermelon. Why are so many movies adding stupid inappropriate jokes???

There are no likable characters and the deaths are just lame for an R-rated movie. This movie was just so uninteresting and I was bored throughout. I'd rather watch Seed of Chucky. And I didn't even like that one! SKIP THIS MOVIE.

It runs with ai out of of control idea really well and even shows how an ai with no safety precautions could turn into what becomes Chucky. Hamill is a great Chucky, doing well to avoid going into his joker whilst still offering a creepy evil voice, the actor playing Andy is brilliant, you can see the emotional rollercoaster this doll puts on him. The cast does feel bloated with characters who had nothing to them but one little plot point, but none of them are outright bad. Pacing is a bit over the place, with a slow boil to begin with it trying to ramp up seeming to blow over scenes that needed a bit longer and others longer than they needed to be. The effects are overall great with an animatronic doll skirting the line between what you could see done in real life and what’s uncanny valley, however the use of cgi in the third part really lets it down. Being a life long Chucky fanatic, I went into this movie ready to pull it apart at the seams should it have been a badly made movie, but it wasn't. Not even close, in fact quite the opposite. Of course we are always going to find ourselvesBeing a life long Chucky fanatic, I went into this movie ready to pull it apart at the seams should it have been a badly made movie, but it wasn't. Not even close, in fact quite the opposite. Of course we are always going to find ourselves comparing between the classic slasher killer doll 1988 movie, to the new 2019 new-look Chucky, Childs Play. Which I too was guilty of doing. But once you adapt to his new appearance you might find yourself pleasantly surprised with how loveable the all new malfunctioning killer A.I Chucky is.

This time round, Chucky is not possessed by a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray, but instead has been tampered with by a disgruntled factory worker, who switches off all Chuckys safety features, before throwing himself out of the window to his death.

From here Chucky begins to learn bad habits from us humans, and aims to please his new best friend, Andy at any cost. Starting with the family pet cat.

Without delving into the story too much, and running the "spoiler alert" risk, what I will say is this movie is smart, clever and really engrossing from start to finish, which will please most horror fans with gory deaths popping up in a timely fashion.

And gripes? A few....

First being the movies length, it does feel a tad shorter than I would have liked, I feel another 30 to 45 minutes could have given the story more depth, and a better understanding to each of the characters personality and drive.

Second being Chuckys new apperance. If, like me you LOVE the still existing Childs Play Chucky horror franchise, you might initially struggle with this new look Chucky, he is kind of spooky looking to begin with, yet cute at the same. And although it isn't a huge mountain to overcome, some might feel displeased with his appearance in comparison to the original Chucky we already know and love.

Would I recommend this movie to my friends and family? Absolutely! I honestly think you'll be pleasantly surprised by how witty and enjoyable this movie is, and you might just find yourself feeling a touch sorry for Chucky in certain parts of the movie too, despite him being a notorious killer.

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of current horror films and the few remakes I've seen aren't great. However, I heard Mark Hamill was going to voice Chucky and I figured I'd give it a go. I'm glad I did. There are a few callbacks to the original script, but most of the story is different and it has to be. Chucky's not a serial killer trapped in a toy, but a malfunctioning AI. This Chucky's motivations for killing, and yes he has a motivation, is different then the original.
It also makes sense to change the voice actor. Brad Dourif is the perfect voice for the original Chucky, but would not make sense for this one. Mark Hamill's voice has this sinister innocence about it that is perfect for the role. And this isn't like some gritty retelling, it's camp. There's a lot of dark humor. It knows what it's supposed to be and has fun with it. Also, I know people had an issue with Chucky's face, but after seeing the movie, I can say it does work in the movie's favor. So, if you're a fan of '80s horror and are willing to take a chance on a reimagining, I strong recommend this movie.

Then add in some lackluster directing that results in bad performances, and sprinkle in numerous cliches and tropes. Even Hamil's excellent voice acting cannot save this, as he is confied to the role of a parrot, instead of villian. At the very least this should have creative death scenes to sell itself, but that apparently is too much to ask. Fans and non-fans alike should avoid this movie. Expand

Initially... I didn't like the design of "chucky" or think that an AI was a particularly suitable replacement for charles lee ray (spelling?)...

...but it was a perfectly fine and enjoyable movie. It is actually a pretty decent blend between an adapted child's play and lawnmover man - hell, even got a bit of a puppet master vibe here and there, so not entirely sure what the other boomers are on about.

In short, the movie is a perfectly fine horror movie, and a lot better than the majority out there, in fact, it was actually watchable and entertaining.

I wouldn't give it a ten, I would give it somewhere between a 6 to 8, but i'm giving it a 10 to offset some of these ridiculous 0's.

When they announced they were going to remake it, I along with everyone else wondered why? After seeing this new surprisingly smart and modernized take on the story I have to say I'm very glad they decided to do so, and that doesn't take away anything from the original.

After a very intriguing new origin intro the film takes us to a familiar plot set up with Andy and his Mother getting a hold of the buddi doll. As things progress with this updated technologically focused story, things start getting intense and downright brutal. I really love the added smart tech aspects of the plot as it just makes Chucky's power even greater. Chucky and Andy also have an emotional connection that makes you care for both of them quite a bit as characters. Andy's character is also going through many hardships of growing up which also gives some relatability instead of having him be a helpless five-year-old. When the finale hits it's just so incredibly extravagant and violent and it's thoroughly intense.

Mark Hamil's vocal work for the classic horror character is tremendously brilliant and gives the character so much personality and life. I also thought everyone in the film did great acting jobs all around and sold their roles. I was very skeptical with Chucky's look in the trailers and some press release photos but, I have to say they did a spectacular job on his practical effects with the animatronics. Also the CGI that was necessary for certain action scenes worked serviceably.

Director Lars Klevburgh has a fantastically keen eye for certain lighting tones and colorization that adds a ton to the overall product. Camerawork is also nicely done and I love all of the throwbacks to the original films as well as some pop culture Easter eggs thrown in. The gore effects are undeniably some of the best I've seen recently and just got so ballistic and brutal yet so fun. I really do hope they can go somewhere in the future with this franchise because there is so much potential especially after this surprisingly excellent start. You can love the original and you can love the new one all the same and it's not a crime.

A revisitation of narrative material that tries neither to completely replicate nor bastardize the original story in question, "Child's Play" offers just enough of the spirit and tone of the original without slavishly adhering to the exact story beats and offering nearly as many moments of fan-service that we've seen other remakes commit to as of late. Yes, some of the puppeteering and design work is suspect, but the kills, performances, and visuals? Shockingly enjoyable. This is a tight, well-realized horror thriller with a great personality and a ton of laughs. I honestly am stunned to say that I wouldn't mind seeing another. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, if you want to watch this film do not watch the trailer because it spoils major death scenes and shows a majority of the ending if this film. The acting in this film was surprisingly actually really good. Both Aubrey Plaza and Gabriel Bateman did great jobs as their characters. The biggest one that shocked me was Mark Hamill as Chucky. When it was first released that he was going to be voicing Chucky I was hesitant but now seeing the film he actually did a great job. Although, I do wish they did the same thing in the original movie where they had a different voice actor before Chucky turned evil. Same thing with the actual doll because it looked way too creepy for any kid to actually be interested in buying it. But honestly, when he does turn evil the look does work better than the original doll. The cinematography, done by Brendan Uegama, in this film was just outstanding. You could easily tell that the lighting in each shot was supposed to look that way and helped set the tone and mood for what was about to go down or just to make Chucky look creepier than he already does. One thing I didn’t like though is what they did with Chucky’s origin. Now, this is a SLIGHT SPOILER so if you don’t want to be slightly spoiled than just skip over this part. Instead of just having a serial killer they just had an employee who got fired for daydreaming corrupted Chucky. It’s so dumb and it should have just stayed with the original way. The music that was composed by Bear McCreary was amazing and like the cinematography helped with the scene. The ending makes no sense but hey at least it sets up for a sequel right. In the end, Child’s Play (2019) is actually better than the original with some parts and worse with others. Definitely check this movie out. Expand

Toy Story 3 ended on a very definitive note. It felt the like the final chapter had closed and that there didn't need to be another film. Not to mention that after having created what is generally considered one of the strongest film trilogies ever made, Pixar would be tempting the fates by creating another one. But they did it! Toy Story 4 is an utterly entertaining film.

This film's feel seems to be created to directly contrast with 3. Whereas the last movie was darker and felt stretched out, this film feels more lighthearted and fluidly compact. This is the installment that is trying the most to have fun.

Don't consider this purely a frivolous film. The ending is almost as strong as in the last movie, and I felt that one was only better only by a thin margin. Things get pretty emotional.

The entire film is about Woody (Tom Hanks) having an existential crisis. Once a favorite plaything and the leader of Andy's toys, Woody is now one of his new owner's least played with toys and being a newcomer, no longer the leader. His whole journey is pretty compelling.

The biggest reason this movie justifies it's existence is that not only do we have closure for Bo Beep (Ghostbuster's Annie Potts), but her character is finally given justice. In the original film, it seems she was part of the cast just because they needed at least a couple female characters. Her role didn't serve much purpose other than to be Woody's girlfriend. Same with the sequel. You could've cut the character out, and it wouldn't affect anything. Then, in number three, she was just out of the story entirely, having already been sold to a new owner. The writer's reasoning at the time was that due to the heavy action scenes, I'm guessing primarily the moments where the toys are roughed up by toddlers, Bo Beep being porcelain and fragile was difficult to include. Here she's finally give her due. She has more personality, she has agency, and she is finally part of the action and story.

New character Forky (voiced by Veep and Arrested Development's Alan Hale) is an inspired creation, a handicraft toy made out of a spork who's dealing with sudden sentience. He works well interacting with Woody as they share questions about their existence in the world. I actually felt the character was underutilized a bit. (It did annoy me a little that the writers were selective about how much or little knowledge of the world Sporky had.)

The new villain Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) is yet another emotionally damaged toy. Don't worry about her being a clone of the last two. They go down a refreshingly different path with her.

Though I enjoyed the story, I do admit that the movie basically copies the formula of the first two films by having a few characters separated from the others and going on a journey. The movie may as well be called Woody Story as the majority of the cast is sidelined for the film and even Buzz is more of a supporting player. A lot of time is spent on the new characters. Though I can't complain much as they all are pretty entertaining. (Ducky and Bunny (Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele) bring us the funniest joke in the entire series.)

I'd rank this only under number 2. TS4 is a blast and I recommend this to all Toy Story fans.

Chances are you are not going to be bored watching this film. The film thankfully doesn't take itself too seriously, which most of the time works in its favour. Unfortunately if you are looking for a very well made horror film you won't find it here. But thats not necessary a bad thing because this film is easily watchable and I definitely had a fun time watching it. It simply isn't trying to be something amazing it just wants you to be entertained. Some aspects of the film I really enjoyed were the performance. The protagonist Andy was portrayed very well by Gabriel Bateman and Mark Hamill once again hit it out of the park with his amazing voice acting as Chucky in this film. Surprisingly the film offered some great kills as well that I didn't see coming. This film was surprisingly quite original as well which I enjoyed. I thought this was a nice new take on the Chucky Character. Overall Child's Play is a very entertaining film with great performances, enjoyable kills and a great sense of fun throughout. Expand

More fun than you think it will be. The premise is solid - how can you tell when a self-learning AI doll has become conscious (spoiler, you don't) - and the fun is there.

There's a great early scene in which Chucky observes the kids laughing and having fun watching a horror movie and "learns" that that's what they want in their lives so he grabs a knife and threatens to kill them. Hey, he's just trying to fit in! What a sick society we have here, and hey would you look at that this is a horror movie itself and the audience is all implicated and such.

Unfortuantely, it really doesn't stick the landing. The premise is never explored meaningfully and the climax is generic and kinda boring.

A combo doll/smart speaker/robot companion is popular with the kids, but one of them (thx to a disgruntled employee) is wrongly programmed. You know what that means and so does the audience. Things take a while to get going (or killing) and when they do, the attacks are just meh. There's nothing original here and the focus on a trio of kids harkens to the Stranger Things audience, which is where this mildly violent version may be aimed. While it's never dull, it's also never scary and sometimes preposterous. Easter Egg: When the boy is asked what he wants to name his doll, he blurts out "Luke Skywalker," which is a pointed reference to the actor voicing the doll, Mark Hamill. Expand

It's a modernized origin, very different in flavor, and I don't mind the change at all. Actually the very first instigating scene is completely ridiculous, but easily forgotten as the movie picks up steam.

The kills will stand out in my memory, and the overall plot direction is serviceable enough. It kept me watching, but at the end of it all, it could have been a bit more. The setup to the ending promises the world, but what it delivers never rises above "just fine." And Mark Hamill was excellent, duh.

I give it a strong 6.

Just watched the new Child's Play 2019. If you ignore the name and the previous movies, it's actually pretty good for what it is. I see this as more as a tribute to the series or a very good clone.

Acting is decent. It is the first Child's Play since the original that is a little scary. Not too many gory scenes, but the ones that are there, are pretty intense and well executed (pun intended.) Great atmosphere and build up. Character development is a bit weak. Plot is simple but an interesting twist on the original.

The story is really strange. Chucky now has a chip that makes him vicious. A hard step compared to the story in the original. I do not really like it either.
Then we come to violence. Class splatter effects with fierce moments. Since you have significantly increased. But to the burned Chucky from the original no comparison.
That's why the movie is a weak remake and disappoints me. Chucky from the original did not deserve this.

Child's Play for the Netflix generation. Why do I say this? Because frankly the movie feels that way.

First of all, I'm still quite confused about why the decision was taken to revive this franchise, especially taking into account that in the times in which we lived, it would be difficult for someone to find a homicidal doll of little more than 50 or 60 centimeters scary.

The fact that it's a doll corrupted by technology instead of voodoo may sound updated and yet it takes away the strong supernatural element of this saga.

And worse, you cannot be scary when the damn doll makes you laugh. I mean the redesign is appalling and despite being a great voice actor, Mark Hamill is unable to live up to Brad Dourif's achievements.

At least Andy is no longer as useless as he was in the original film.

Disappointing and forgettable.

I think this cast gives an outstanding job especially Mark Hamill who just kills the role of chucky! (No Pun Intended) The kills are creative and I love how they didn’t just make a carbon copy and they did something new with Chucky. At some points in the film they actually make you feel bad for him. Instead of a ghost inhabiting the doll, it’s a depressed worker turning off all safety protocols! This movie is a pure joy too watch, in fact I saw it twice already! But that's no true because each year there are hundreds of original films that release and a good chunk of them are horror. The issue is people don't seek them out or they get bootleg copies depriving the creators of their earnings and a majority of these filmmakers aren't rich and depend on those earnings to make a name for themselves and by proxy make more. Anyway I'm off topic but seek these films out and you'll **** about reboots a lot less!

Now onto Child's Play. I loved it and honestly it had the perfect balance of humor and horror. I've been watching horror since I snuck the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre my parents rented and watched it at five. So I've been watching these films for decades and at eight the OG Child's Play didn't scare me at all. I thought it was cool but it didn't scare me. Now this reboot didn't terrify me but it did creep me out and we enjoyed it very much! I like the new take and to me it's more frightening that it's all tech based in that it can get into anything connected to the network as opposed to the voodoo route. Mark Hammil killed it as Chucky and imo is right up there with Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky.

Also Don Mancini is continuing his original CP universe so it's a win win because Curse of Chucky was amazing and my favorite of the original films. Anyway if you're a fan give this a go. Go in with an open mind and I promise you'll like it because I had low expectations going in and was pleasantly surprised!

Child's Play (Child's Play Reboot) is of horror/ slasher genre but movie doesn't have any horror element. I don't know if director wanted it but the movie is sort of black comedy/ slasher movie.

Movie was not scary as the original but it was tense. The concept of modern doll doing weird things due to wrong programming is new take on doll doing weird things after being possessed by a spirit. Well, they tried their best to show the new concept but the execution could have been a little bit better.

Many original movie's fan are not loving this movie saying that it's modern concept was bad and movie was not scary. I agree movie was not scary but seeing that it was a reboot and had nothing to do with the previous running franchise, it was a good try. Atleast they tried something new instead of copying same old story. For original franchise fans, a tv series continuing story of cult of chucky and 9th part is also confirmed, so you can consider that this reboot is story of other universe. Overall, I would recommend it to everyone even Child's Play fans who didn't watch it.
