This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cars 3 is a great film, don't get me wrong, but with all the trailers it really made it seem like it would be all about McQueen. However, while watching the film I definitely knew what was coming next. The film didn't even try to be unpredictable. Having Cruz Ramirez race at the end is touching and shows change for McQueen from the first Cars movie, as he doesn't only think about himself. But me being a huge Lighting fan, it is a little disappointing to not have him win his last race, it almost seemed like he gave up. Still, it is a great film for kids. Expand

Old cars and new cars. McQueen is an old car. Storm is a new car. Mcqueen is mad for a moment.
The animation is solid, but other than that, this ain't that great.

"Cars 3" feels like a spiritual successor to the original "Cars" by adding heart and a message to the story. However, the story itself is predictable and uneven.

But now, watching Pixar come back to Cars (AKA my least favourite Pixar franchise) almost made me want to puke. But then, trailer after trailer,my interest grew up and up,becoming one of my Most Anticipated of this Summer. And it turned out that i didn't regret it at all (like Cars 2 back in 2011). The story was great (you'll probably get some Rocky III/IV vibes at some point),with messages about never giving up and dealing with becoming old. The animation almost reminded me of The Good Dinosaur (another Pixar flick),because of the beautifully crafted landscapes and the well-detailed cars (that kinda made me think that those cars came out straight from a Gran Turismo game). This time,we have some new additions to the movie, like Cruz Ramirez (probably the funniest charachter in the movie) and Jackson Storm, the main villain of the movie (and probably one of the charachters to have a short screen-time). And the rest was fine, like the charachter development,or the groundbreaking soundtrack by Randy Newman. In the end, this is not another Toy Story 3 or another Finding Dory, but it's still well-made. It's funny,it's poignant,it's Pixar at its best. Cars 3 may not be the best Pixar movie, but it sure is the best installment in the trilogy. And yes,it's better than Cars 2 and all those 'Furious' movies. Expand

This added great new characters full of emotion (unlike Cars 2), and the story is great. The story follows Lightning McQueen as he struggles while trying to beat new top tier racers. During the story he visits many new places for help, and it can be surprisingly emotional. The ending is also the best the Cars series has had. It isn't predictable which is nice, it has great voice actors, and the animation is almost perfect. The only downside is that they didn't show enough of the original Cars characters, but maybe that was for the best. It is way better than most people are saying, so go see it, you won't be disappointed. Expand

I like the idea of 'retired racer finds new life as a trainer', but I found it hard to like Cruz Ramirez and I was left more interested in Smokey and the storyline around the Hudson Hornet. I also think the storyline went a little wonky. I would have rather seen Lighting crash, then try a comeback, fail, then go see Smokey and discover the potential for a new life as a trainer where he discovers a new racer with the potential to beat Storm. Then, he/she wins in the final race at the end with the help of Lightning who taps into the advice from the Hudson Hornet. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This Movie is kind of an OK/Good movie.
I know that McQueen has to come out of retirement because he needs one more race but however other racers (the older ones) retire. So much futuristic cars come in and so, Jackson Storm is the most advanced and McQueen couldn't beat him and blah blah blah. He is defeated and has to train because he wants to go and beat Jackson Storm. This final installment gave me shock, depression and happiness also giving funny jokes to everyone. The prediction is like you know how it is. I predicted pretty easily from the trailers and also it was kind of predictable like when McQueen manages to stop Miss Fritter but tries to defeat her but she stand up successfully. That's all for this review and so I call it 7/10 also OK/Good. Plus, I was a Cars fan.

Where can I start?

I went to see the movie with a very big hype, afraid to be like the second one that is pretty bad. And I wasn't disappointed. The story is very well thought out and makes you see another side of Lightning McQueen, which is very good. They chose not to be a hero vs. villain story but rather a self-maturing one, it was a cool touch, at least for me.

Lightning McQueen is amazing in the movie, showing his willingness to run and also his side of a very experienced guy. I can see that the film focuses on only 3 characters, which doesn't mean that it choked others, quite the opposite. I was also able to see that after the "failure" of Cars 2, they chose to shorten the screen time of Mater, which really (and unfortunately) seems to be his place as a secondary character. Cruz Ramirez is a very good character with a possibility for many cool things (maybe even a movie, who knows?), also innovating being a main woman pilot, since in the second there was also one, but it was not highlighted at all. Jackson Storm is a good rival that motivates the public to cheer even more for the protagonist, but would not say that it is memorable, it is just what it is: a rival.

The film doesn't go wrong in practically anything, being able to hit forward with many good Pixar films. He is better than the first and EVEN better than the second. By the way, let's forget the second. You can very well see the first one and jump right into the third, since Cars 2 didn't add practically nothing to the trilogy. To make it clear, I don't hate Cars 2, but after seeing this new movie, I could see how inferior it is, even to the first. If it's still on, go to the movies and draw your own conclusions, but I'll tell you: You will not regret it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A huge disappointment. The trailers really looked awesome and like the movie would be about Lightning McQueen making a triumphant comeback after suffering a huge loss. But no..... The movie starts out with 10 year racing veteran McQueen at the top of his game and having fun. Then come in all the more technologicaly advanced cars who go 210+ mph and everyone but McQueen goes into retirement or is fired, and he has a huge crash from pushing himself too hard. It then cuts to him back home and nothing of his crash or trauma are mention again. Encourage by his girlfriend to get back out there, Lightning goes to retrain at the training center of his new boss. Now Stirling was an interesting character but not really used much other than as a sort of antagonist who was more interested in money than taking care of Lightning himself or racing. Lightning gets this new trainer, Cruz, who is supposed to be able to get athletes into proper racing form but she spends more time making fun of Lightning for being over 30 and old, like a lot, embarrassing him or treating him like a grandpa. Seriously, she never listens to him or ask him if he’s happy she just annoys him. Frustration leads Lightning to mess up a racing simulator and having to make a deal to stay in the racing game if he wins a big race in a few weeks time. So he goes to train outdoors because y’know over 30’s don’t like technology and stuff. But he has to take Cruz with him and here it becomes obvious that she really is just nothing more than a fitness coach because she is hopeless out side and can’t race. So Lightning has to waste time training her because cruz is the 20 something year old who only works with tech and the outside is a foreign, scary place for her.

This goes on for a bit, Lightning looking after Cruz and she in no way helps him train or anything for his big race. A few days away from it we learn that oh no she wanted to be a racer but was to afraid to be one and wimped out. It’s here we’re supposed to feel sorry for her but I didn’t. At all. She doesn’t seem to realise that this means a lot to Lightning, it’s his life and income but no, her failure as a racer is what’s going to be important.

Lightning then goes to the home of his old mentors teacher, and him and all the old cars from the 1940’s to 1950’s also make fun of Lightning and call him old, excessively. They try to train lightning but it’s clear by now that the focus of the movie is Cruz and her life not Lightning making a come back as the trailers portrayed. Lightning goes to his race and out of the 43 racers he’s the last. He still makes it to number 14 in the 250th lap (there’s 500) but quits mid race to let Cruz have a shot at being a racer and start her career. It feels cheap. The ending was a huge disappointment and some people got up and left the cinema around me. I mean the jokes were bad, the movie was Ames’s of plots and characters and it all feels forced. Cruz feels like a cheap knockoff McQueen who never really works for her racing career, she has to be given it whilst all the other cars worked for it. She can do things no one else can with little training and taking over from some one half way through a race is cheating. Yes you can switch drivers in a race but the car is the same. This is more like if a runner switched with another to finish a race whilst all the other runners had to do the full thing. She’s not a good character for girls or women empowerment by being annoying, half-assed at her job, or having to get her career given to her because she can’t work for it herself. There is some hope though as Lightning said he would continue racing after he trained Cruz for the season so maybe, just maybe we will get to see Lightning be a champion like Pixar are always telling us he is. It would be nice to see him work through a movie, fight for his place at the top and win, spectaculary. This is something he has never done in any of the movies. He either gives it up to be kind or give someone something ( this plot is used here like in the first movie, so it’s got rehashed plot lines) or mater was the main lead. Pixar show us champion Lightning. He’s been nice, a good friend and nice again. Show us this winner you keep telling us about. That would be a really good movie unlike this one.

Oddly enough, though, I actually find it to be my favorite of the "Cars" films. Beyond the typically beautiful animation, I appreciate that Pixar actually took the series back to the racetrack, focused on Lightning more, and made the film a bit more mature, kept the film from feeling like too much of a retread, and actually adding some legitimately emotional and tense moments in the film. Is it one of Pixar's best? No, definitely not. Is it still an enjoyable film? I think so! And even if you aren't too interested in the series, it's worth checking out to see what side of the fence you sit on here. Expand

"Cars 3" wasn't tuned enough to get out from the garage

The anthropomorphic Cars universe returns to the race after a criticized pit stop called "Cars 2". On this occasion, emblematic Lightning McQueen retakes the wheel to run into the crude law of reality: the retirement. His components don't evolve, his environment does, therefore, while the beloved car stands up against a new horde of technological newbies, must choose which direction he will take for his future: he decides when he's done.

Although it's difficult and paradoxical to say, keeping in mind the elaboration dimensions of the near magnanimous Pixar, the "Cars" franchise, despite being one of the most profitable animated proposals for the company via films and merchandising, is the lightest and less prodigious in the history of the American computer animation film studio. Have you ever wondered why Pixar releases one more installment on the family of automobiles, considering the results of its spoiled predecessor? Well, the answer is John Lasseter. With over 20 years as animator, director, producer and, in short, Pixar leader, this man is the main promoter of the saga, because, in addition to advising the different fields of making feature films, he has directed the two car films, provoking he keep a deep affection towards his universe, and who does not like it? It's such the faith in his speed world that has put his hands on fire by Brian Fee and Lightning McQueen, in the directorial debut of one and in the emotional "retirement" of the other.

Fee accepted the big vote of confidence of Pixar to appropriate the third entry into the motorized universe. The filmmaker increases the mileage of the saga, converting it into the best easygoing proposal among its predecessors, balancing doses of nostalgia with realistic and sensitive skids, basing on a mature message, which, although it does not make muddy dealing with questions of delicate importance, it inserts misogynist missives, of course, relegating the special emotional and comic impact placed on the characters and the story.

Although it falters keeping a constant pace and proposing attractive novelties in any of the narrative points, Pixar is characterized by producing ecstatic wonders in technical and/or animation fields, and this is not the exception. They don't infest exotic settings with which to profit, otherwise, exhibit once again, they return to the roots one way or another, however, get stuck neither in plain beauty of the deserts adjacent to Radiator Springs nor in the traditional race track; the feature film goes from a sumptuous training complex to a speedy journey with Mack, where landscapes are interspersed majestically. The script overtakes the flaws of the second one by far, in this movie is appealing to sentimentalism through a dramatic effect, which is led by inescapable acceptance of age, an irreparable beginning for novice new generations. It's pertinent, but the incorporation of technology feels like an excess, and although cinema is lately motivated by this, it's not a necessarily leading element. Precisely, the theme of legacy is the one that raises the final twist and the corresponding gestation from the second act, since the first half hour is decaffeinated, slow and tiring, a stretching of the daring opening monologue that emulates the portent of the first film: "I'm faster than fast", but in fact, there's a shortage of gasoline. In consideration of characters, it was thrilling to know what the screenwriters would do with the car #95, in order to he resumes the leading role after, incomprehensibly, the main attention was concentrated in the comic relief of the saga: Mate, in the same way, inexplicably, they give him a tight participation with few effective jokes but a big futility, perhaps, so that the audience would not disperse their attention from the true star. McQueen and his new flock of characters, in which is Cruz Ramirez, a coach sport car with aborted dreams about being a pro driver, they possess charisma and spark required to raise the level towards the end of the footage, their motivations and actions are more prudent, revealing a pure and human story, without decorations or possibilities of questioning perception, an undeniable feature that makes Pixar, Pixar.

"Cars 3" by Brian Fee turns on the engines of a franchise that was already parked in the garage, generating real opportunities to roar the car, textually, in upcoming years with the help of new—fixed— ideas. With regard to the (hi)story of McQueen, he has an ending as nostalgic as uncomfortable, the trouble is that doesn't succeed it with the melancholy that "Toy Story 3" achieved, reducing everything to a childlike thing, a car journey lacking impact, and although, in small extent, it's thankful, on the other hand, placed it as one of the less interesting Pixar films, as this world-class company is not only characterized by its visuals, but also by heart of its stories.

The Technical aspect is OUTSTANDING. Pixar almost nailed the realistic render. The sea, the mud, the "past videos" they are like... A MUST SEE!

It wasn't perfect, but it washed the taste of Cars 2 out of my mouth forever. This movie doesn't even address the 2nd movie, and personally I like to think of Cars 2 as one of Maters Tall Tales and leave it at that. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first Cars film gets way too much slander for being a cash grab that nobody really asked for, but I would argue that it is one of Pixar's best because of its landscapes, character developments and visual storytelling. While Cars 2 felt a lot more like a made-for-TV movie and is passable at best, it didn't capture what made the first film so great. Thankfully, Cars 3 does all of that, possibly even more so. Expand

I was very much excited for this movie and the trailer absolutely caught my eye onto it.

This movie's graphics was one of the best Pixar ever had and I saw this movie's potential as a great movie, but they executed it not in the way Mcqueen's fans (such as myself)would be glad to see, as the time we saw Mcqueen actually racing with rivals was the least from the Cars Trilogy, even the villain of this movie rarely appear in this movie. The characters in my opinion are fantastic, Cruz was a terrific addon onto this franchise and the mention of Doc in this movie made it even better. The best moments that i had from this movie when unpredictable things happen like letting Cruz finish the race for Mcqueen,it was fun and enjoyable. I gotta say Cars 3 is a great movie compared to Cars 2, but the original Cars would always be the best. Overall it sums up to be a good 'Thursday' night out with friends.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An absolute disappointment. The trailers looked awesome, as did some of the artwork for the movie but instead we get this messy let-down movie that contradicts itself, is full of bad jokes, gender stereotypes ( you damn millennial and gen z kids), age-shaming ( constantly. the never let up on calling Lightning this throughout the movie) and basically retires Lightning McQueen for this Scrappy-do/Mary sue like character Cruz (who looks like a big mouthed house-car, has to be given everything, y'know confidence, training, her wins and half-asses her way to stardom), who is to be the new face of the franchise. Well sorry Pixar but I highly doubt you'll have much of an audience for the next Cars movie after this one. The movies beginning had McQueen lose out to all these digital cars (who never would have been in a NASCAR race) and crash (this is pretty horrific looking). He then decides to give racing a go again but his new trainer, Cruz, is so goddamn useless that it's almost painful to watch all the constant embarrassment and humiliation Lightning has to suffer from her. He eventually has to make a deal that will let him continue to race, if he wins, but has to take cruz with him. Big mistake! The movie goes from being a comeback movie to CREED....you lied Pixar....you lied. The rest of the movie is predictable plot lines/montages of Lightning training but actually training cruz as well and at the final race, where he does really good, puts her in to give her a chance at racing because women can't do it themselves y'know ( I am being sarcastic here). They can only get their chance if a guy gives it to them. Plus Cruz, who is not a pro racer or expert or anything, wins the other half of the race and everyone's like "Yay! a girl won! look look look!!!!! "Yes Pixar, we are very much aware we can race and win at things, thank you. Blah...it's all just message after message and disappointment. I really cannot see kids going out and asking for Cruz toys (girls as well as boys) after this movie. Oh! And it earned Pixar back, after production costs, 134 million less than Cars and 154 million less than Cars 2. That says something alright about this. Expand

Granted, the film does bring a few decent aspects to the table that keep it from just barely not sinking to the level of the second film. For one, it doesn't even mention the second film or contain a single character from that one at all (thankfully). Second, it does something that truly surprised me in a rather good way. Paul Newman, who voiced Doc Hudson in the first film back in 2006, and also sadly passed away two years later in 2008, had his voice featured in this film from recorded dialogue from the first film that went unused. Therefore, one of my favorite aspects from the first film was focused on more, which was Newman's voice talent and Doc Hudson's relationship with Lighting McQueen. That was truly a pleasant surprise for me that I so wish would've been enough to redeem the rest of this film for me, because aside from these positive standouts that I've mentioned, the rest of the film felt very uninspired and lazy, especially story-wise (if you've seen Rocky 3, you've basically kind of already seen this too). Overall, its few positive aspects, as well as the endearing and final return of Newman's voice talent made this a decent comeback effort from Pixar on behalf of the embarrassing second film, but it simply wasn't enough to save the rest of the film and its story unfortunately. It isn't as good as the first film, however. Thankfully we do get to see Radiator Springs again, if briefly. The movie doesn't have a true Villain, just a snotty newcomer who we only see during the races. Speaking of the races, they are thankfully short and not drawn out. The movie is mainly about Lightning McQueen facing retirement and passing the baton to another racer. It is also refreshing to see an animated film that is geared towards boys. 75% of animated films are made for little girls these days. Not to say that both genders won't enjoy it, just relieved it's not another Princess movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is technically well made and a pleasure to look at, but the story isn't quite up to par with the original Cars movie. It's sorta better than Cars 2, but not a lot. What bothers me most about the movie is the ending, which is frankly so unbelievable it hurts. Spoileralert......

McQueen retiring and his new trainer, who always wanted to be a racer but couldn't handle the pressure, is now suddenly better than an entire new generation of racers, due to what exactly? Stealing McQueen's spark? I'm sure the message they wanted to bring is valuable, but when even the kids are a bit down because Lightning will never race again they could have done things differently for a better movie experience.

They all make a welcome return in Cars 3, but, while visually dynamic, Lightning McQueen’s newest challenge still feels out of alignment with a languid end result that lacks sufficient forward momentum.
Given the enduring good will generated by the first installment, the franchise, which has to date grossed well over $1 billion and sold countless billions more in four-wheeled merchandise, should expect similarly strong, school’s-out business, even with the picture’s less-than-zippy performance.

In fact, there’s no connection between Cars 3 and Cars 2, this one only flashes back to the first Cars. It’s as if Cars 2 didn’t exist. You could watch Cars, skip Cars 2, watch Cars 3, and you wouldn’t miss a thing. As usual, the animation is beautiful and it shows how much technology has advanced between 2006 (when the first one came out) and now. While the first movie took place in a mostly western environment, this one takes place in a mostly southern environment. The characters are also fantastic. McQueen goes from the immature young racer in the first film to where he’s now older and is getting beat by younger racers. It’s hard for him to accept that he’s no longer the youngest kid on the block and may no longer be able to compete. It goes to the theme of where a person who’s older and has a lot of experience in a certain field is threatened to be overtaken by someone who’s younger and is better with technology. Perhaps a few of you here can relate to that.

Going back to the characters, another standout is Cruz Ramirez, a young car who basically becomes Lightning’s trainer. I won’t go into more detail, but she’s great. Doc Hudson, Lightning’s mentor is also fine. I won’t say what role the character has, but the unique thing his that he’s voiced by Paul Newman, like in the first film. The thing is that Newman died in 2008, so Pixar decided to use archival recordings of his voice, instead of finding a different actor to fill the role. All of the other original characters (including Tow Mater) make an appearance, but their role in the movie is very minor.

As far as the story goes, it’s fine, and there are several exciting race scenes and more dramatic scenes. It’s not as complex as other Pixar movies, but it works. However, Cars 3 lacks the emotional gut punch of other Pixar movies, the 2nd act is rather disorganized, and the ending is overly convenient. It’s nowhere near Pixar’s best and I’d argue Cars 3 isn’t as good as the original Cars. But it’s worlds better than Cars 2 and overall I’d give this a 70%. Overall, Cars 3 isn’t great, but it’s definitely worth watching. If you haven’t seen any of the Cars films, I’d recommend seeing Cars 1 and then Cars 3. Both are filled with fun and have heart.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For more than 20 years, Pixar Animation Studios has produced several of different classics. Some are excellent films with in-depth storytelling, like Toy Story 3 and Inside Out. Others have upset the critics and the box office records, like Cars 2. Well, Cars 3, however, fits this category of a "fresh" Pixar movie.
After the mediocre sequel Cars 2, Pixar decided to step up this franchise's game by pitching a third entry. The movie studio also realized that die-hards of the series would enjoy the third movie being more in tune with the original. The extensive advertising that went into the film, all featuring the crash of Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), the veteran racing champion, was targeted more towards adult viewers. Unfortunately, the film appealed more towards younger viewers. Cars 2 grabbed adults more because there was a massive spy subplot incorporated into the film, which threw the franchise off-track. As the film progresses the chemistry between Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo), McQueen's high-tech trainer, develops from total strangers to close friends. During the final race, for example, McQueen sacrifices his position in the race to give Ramirez her chance to win her first Piston Cup championship. While this sounds very heroic, the reality is that National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) rookies must enter the rookie division to compete in national championships. However, Cars 3 makes an exception to the reality because this is an entertaining, children's film, not a documentary on how to become a racecar driver and retire.
Although this is a poignant story about retirement and learning from elders, Cars 3 still manages to be defined as a comedy and family-friendly film. Almost no one was expecting a happy ending to a movie where the main character nearly dies in the teaser trailer. The overall tone makes the targeted audience feel welcome and glad to have attended an incredible film. Randy Newman's score transformed the movie from a sad drama to a happy, fun comedy, using themes from the original, including "The Big Race" which is nostalgic for many people.
Although it surpasses Cars 2 is storytelling, the film almost saved this flat-tired animated franchise, but, in the end, does not match the high standards of Cars. Cars 3 is the perfect example of how a sequel should be constructed and created, using nostalgic scores and kid-friendly jokes for audiences of all ages to laugh. While animated "threequels" like Shrek the Third and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs are charming comedies for fellow audiences, only Cars 3 produces comedy, drama, and nostalgia for audiences of all ages.

C3 is filled to the brim with moments that capture your heart, and drive you to the edge of your seat.
Most notably is the protagonists, Lighting McQueen's incredible arch that really completes this trilogy in the best kind of way. So, If you are looking for a fun, refreshing story that is full of bright characters and powerful lessons. Check out Cars 3 as fast as possible.

It's pretty clear that Cars is the weakest Pixar movie franchise in terms of storytelling, character development and overall quality: The first Cars was not Pixar's worst but far from the best, Cars 2 was god-awful and Cars 3 is surprisingly a BIG improvement over the last film, it manages to be a good movie.

Cars 3 has amazing animation (as expected from Pixar), a generic but decent plot with actual conflict this time, having Lightning McQueen now struggle to stay relevant against a new generation of hi-tech racers. It has decent writing and it feels like this was an "apology letter" to Pixar fans, this is noticeable with the fact that Mater now has like a couple of minutes of screen time. The worst character of the last film, barely appears in this movie, thank God. I have some problems with the story and characters, like the way this ends, the ending was extremely predictable and hilariously ridiculous. Some characters from the previous movies (besides Mater) barely have any screentime, serve no purpose to the plot and feel like shoehorned in and the new characters lack development or charisma, they are pretty forgettable.

This is obviously not a great movie, it's actually decent and has a purpose in the story of the franchise. I enjoyed the movie and it isn't anything too memorable or something I would rewatch.

Cars 3 was good, it could've been amazing, but it was still good. I should have believed McQueen was going to be the legend to top Jackson Storm for his final race, but I believe now that he was better off a teacher for someone even better(aka Cruz Ramirez). That Doc Hudson flip that Cruz inflicted truly summed up that fact. Whether it was McQueen, or Cruz, I was satisfied to see Storm defeated. Expand

The new age begins!

Having seen enough animated feature that possible eligible for the 2018 Oscars, I'm really disappointed with the result of some of the big titles. Yes, including this one, not big films, except 'Coco' are up to any impressive. The bright side is, after a long time, 2D animation might win. This was an okay film. Though I liked the story outline, but did not like how it all was narrated.

I have seen the evolution of 'Harry Potter'. I meant the cast, particularly the main three. For a decade, the little kids grew into older teenagers. But for an animation character, there's no concept of ageing. They always remain same. This film just gave a new perspective. I mean it talked about being or growing old and how it impacts our lives. That we can't hold forever our safe position. Sooner or later, the youngsters will take over it.

McQueen is enjoying his racing, competing with his friendly opponents. But it all changes when a young rookie rewrites the history. Without able to cope with the new generation and their aggression, how McQueen and Co like to counter the latest threat is the film's story. Liked such inspiring storyline. I mean it would inspire more the middle aged people than anybody else. But it is a fun film for all ages, particularly the kids. It is just like turning 'Rambo' into 'Creed', I just want a new beginning in the next sequel.

It's not terrible, but it's just so goddamn BORING. Cars 3, more like Sports Montage the Movie. The whole thing is just montages of cars with music playing over it. What!?

It's an OK movie for 2017. The only reason I give it a 7 is because I grew up with Cars and it's better than the videogame

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film was marketed as a comeback for Lightning McQueen after he suffers a traumatic wreck during a race against newer model cars. These new cars are supposed to be the gen z cars of the cars world, though this is never brought up, and are portrayed as antisocial, self centred glory seekers, particularly Jackson Storm. Lightning then has to get help from a new trainer to prove to the world that he can still be a top racer, adapt with the times and still do his job.

Well, the film does start the way it was advertised, with Lightning being at the top of his game. The racingboard allows the newer cars in and all the older models have to either retire or are fired. Well what did they expect them to do when you bring in cars with lighter bodies and bigger engines? Lightning however still races and does okay. However, you can see that something bad is going to happen as each race gets darker and the music grittier, and it does with lightning crashing in the most spectacular, horrific fashion that really sets you up for his comeback.

Well this doesn’t happen.

The stuff advertised like Lightning being able to wind the clock up again? Doesn’t happen. Lightning is incapable of doing much of anything in this movie it seems, except training his only slightly younger replacement.

Lightning being an underdog and training to proving he’s still got it? Nope! Lightning’s underdog plot is obsolete/never really addressed.

Lightning coming to race Storm in a spectacular race? Storm’s barely seen and Lightning never races him.

Cruz being the trainer who helps get Lightning back in the game? Again, nope! Cruz couldn’t train a plant pot let-alone Lightning it seems. She’s at first deeming, ageist and incompetent, then goes to being even more useless with a boring backstory, before finally becoming a MarySue of all things.

From the moment Lightning meets Cruz, the whole movie just goes down hill. Basically Cruz, a failed wannabe race turned trainer, is an ageist little smart mouth who attempts to get Lightning to do the stupids things like naming his tires (seriously?! Does she not realise how many he goes through in a race?) treat him like he’s 1000 years old and incontinent. Sure Lightning was out of racing for a few months while recovering but he’s not an invalid or a rookie. Basically all her methods and Lightning’s behaviour to said methods are stereotypical “younger idiot trying to teach technophobic older guy things” cliches, along with most of the bad jokes in this film.

Once outside, the rest of the movie turns into an even bigger mess of various plots stolen from other movies such as rehashed stuff from the first Cars and Planes 2. There are various Rocky elements thrown in, lots of bad jokes, clichés and tropes about genders, age, minorities, and it all boils down to Lightning inadvertently training his own useless trainer (Creed). Lightning sticks her in his big race halfway through (this can’t be legal or fair to the other racers) and Cruz wins in the most unrealistic fashion with all the girls cheering for her. Why just the women? Why not everyone else. Where they booing or something? I would have. And the ending saying they both won is a cheap and disappointing.

Now, I'm not an adverse to seeing growth or changes in a character. I enjoy seeing the hero/heroine take hits and grow. This movie doesn’t do this for Lightning. He’s plot as an underdog trying to better himself is overshadowed by cruz’s want/need/plot to be his replacement. It goes back and forth like this so the story never feels emotional enough to bother investing in with either character. Plus we’ve never actually seen Lightning win on any major races or awards, just heard about it. This was a supreme disappointment to those wanting to see him win for once. This is the first Pixar/Disney film to have left me feeling so disappointed that I wanted to cry. It gets 1-star for the visuals and one more star because I did enjoy it up until Lightning got to the Rusteze centre but after that, the movies garbage! It will possibly be watchable to some kids ( under 5’s ) and adults who aren’t bothered by the movies “plot? What plot?” Story but I don’t know anyone who likes this movie. It borderline flopped at the box office and made less money world wide, after earning back its budget, than all other Pixar films except The Good Dinosaur. The main reviews simply praise it for not being Cars 2 and not much else. Granted, some like it but many others, like me, don’t like this film.

And if there is to be a Cars 4 starring Cruz? No thanks! I'm so done seeing the franchises that I love being destroyed by Disney and their ever-growing greed. This movie was a cashgrab and it’s clear the writers had no respect or inclination to depict the characters we love as they should be or grow them properly. So thank you Disney, Pixar, for ruining cars and for this film being one biggest disappointment of 2017.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed the first two Cars and, to be honest, I enjoyed every Pixar film I have seen to date. They are consistently good at telling stories. So I had high hopes with Cars 3. I made it through the first half (on Netflix) and decided to pause it and go about some other tasks. I did this not because it was horrible but rather because it wasn’t holding my interest. SPOILER ALERT…It seemed like a rehash of one of the themes of the first Cars film. Lightning McQueen is a race car. He wants to win. Glory has value and meaning for his life. Competing is what makes him happy and complete. This is where he was at the beginning of the first film. But this time around his happiness is threatened when a group of newer, faster, more technologically advanced cars enter the scene. He just cannot compete.

It kinda lost me there. At least it detached my interest so I walked away for the night and went about my day. It took a couple of days before I returned to Cars 3 to watch the last hour. McQueen goes to his sponsors who have sold their rights to a wealthy fan named Sterling who decides to train him using the most modern technology. McQueen is given a young trainer and everyone treats him like he is old and delicate. I think it was at this point that this film began to resonate with me. I am in my late 40s now and I work with a much younger crowd that will occasionally drop in subtle unintentional remarks about my age. Little innocent things like if I say something funny, the will call what I said a “dad joke”. Or someone will bring up their parents age and reveal that the parents are younger than I am. I do not FEEL old. I am in good shape. I work out. I have a lot of energy but once in a while life will remind me that I am not who I used to be. And this is what McQueen goes through. He doesn’t feel old but is consistently being reminded that a younger, more aerodynamic, faster crowd has made him obsolete as a racecar. He tries to train like the younger cars but fails. He just wasn’t made to be fast enough to beat them. He becomes increasingly frustrated… as does his sponsor and his young trainer and it reaches a head. He agrees to retire and be the object of merchandising if he loses the next race. But if he wins he has the final say on his own retirement.
He seeks out the advice of older racecars. Cars that were personal friends with and have driven alongside his mentor, Doc Hudson. He has been profoundly influenced by Hudson and wishes he could seek out his advice but Hudson has since passed away. At the same time he is growing a strange relationship with his trainer Cruz Ramirez. Ramirez dreamt of being a racecar her whole life but settled on becoming a trainer when she felt intimidated by the other racers during her first race. As she tries to keep up with McQueen to track his speed she inadvertently is being trained by him just as McQueen is inadvertently becoming a mentor and trainer to her. When they meet Hudson’s friends and ask for their help, McQueen discovers that Hudson actually NEEDED McQueen. McQueen fulfilled a part of Hudson that McQueen is now discovering in himself. He hasn’t come to that full realization until the final act of the film though so his training continues using the wisdom and techniques of this older generation racer. But despite making significant gains he still cannot beat Ramirez.
So he enters the final race with a sense of worry and doubt. But as he gets comfortable he begins to find himself moving ahead of all the other racers. As Ramirez is being pushed off the track by Sterling, McQueen’s head begins to echo with all the things she told him about wanting so badly to be a racer and he realizes that he needs to be her Doc Hudson. He has been training her all along and she is more than ready and McQueen decides to let Ramirez finish this race. It is more important to give her what she deserves than to regain his lost glory.

This is a very adult move. It’s telling of a growth that I love. It isn’t just an altruistic act or an act of love for his friend but its an expression of understanding of Doc Hudson’s heart and motivation. He connects and grows with Hudson in a more deep and profound way. After she wins the race McQueen even has himself repainted in Hudsons former color and anoints Ramirez with Hudson's race number. This is all powerful to me especially because both Doc Hudson and the late Paul Newman were echoing sentiments from the grave. And as an aside I loved hearing the Car Talk guys voice McQueen’s former sponsors. Those guys are such fun and I miss the late Tom Magliozzi whose voice was also added by means of former recordings.

The movie starts out a bit slow and didn’t really hold my interest but I think the payoff was worth waiting for. I enjoyed this movie very much although I do not think it was as good as the previous Cars films and certainly didn’t reach the heights of Up or the Incredibles but it was a fun time! I recommend it

*Minor Spoilers*
Cars 3 is probably the most controversial Pixar film, because it belongs to a mixed franchise. But surprisingly, Cars 3 is the best of the series easily. Cars 3 has more in its mind than Lightning McQueen simply winning a race, but also trying to prove himself worthy to stay in the sport he loves, then becoming a mentor to Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonza) later. The story is great, so are the characters. Cruz is a nice addition to the trilogy; there are also a lot more new characters like Sterling (Lightings new sponsor voiced by Nathan Fillion), Jackson Storm (An unexplained protagonist trying to throw Lightning of his game voiced by Armie Hammer), Smokey (Doc Hudson's old crew chief, who later becomes Lightnings Crew Chief voiced by Chris Cooper), and a lot of other old racers. Almost everything in this movie is great, Cars 3 has great race scenes, outstanding animation, a great story, amazing movie trailers, and a fabulous musical score (composed by Randy Newman). Although the story is predictable, Cars 3 is a great closure to a very lopsided trilogy, it's the Cars 2 we asked for, and it's great because it pays a huge respect to Paul Newman and the original Cars Movie.

It's an improvement over the last film, however it does not really offer much to the table. The "Cars" franchise was never anybody's favourite, and I certainly would not complain if this was the last in the series.

Intended to be a remuneration on aging in the spotlight cars 3 is a dying breath. It limps to a bygone conclusion, posing questions it could never answer well enough. This is a far cry from the wholesome beginning.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a huge fan of the Cars franchise ever since the first movie. I was really excited to watch it, since as a kid I was very much into sports cars and racing games. So this movie, which was actually good, seemed like a dream come true for me. I really liked the sequel too (that's a review for another time) and I was really disappointed to know that other people don't like this movie. So my hopes went up when I heard the third movie is also coming.

The movie begins with a callback to the first movie, and it really sends me back to nostalgia. The races are always fun to watch for me, so the beginning absolutely nailed it. Soon after we finally get to see what McQueen looks like without his racing decals on, he's given a new paint job to make him compete against the next gen cars. I really liked the building in which McQueen trains.

The training montages of Cars 3 could have been boring if it was a live action movie. It's a good thing it's an animated movie. Such scenes look more appealing to the eyes. And speaking of visual appeal, Cars 3 continues to maintain the same gorgeous visuals that we get to see in Pixar. The demolition derby scene wasn't as funny as the tractor scene from Cars, but it was enjoyable while it lasted so I won't complain. The bar scene was, well, pretty forgettable, I guess. I had to watch CinemaSins to remember that scene ever happened. And that's actually saying something, since I always remember every scene of movies that I watch on a big screen.

I really liked Storm. If I was a kid he'd be my favourite character from the entire franchise (but no one can top Ramone for me). He is better than Lightning McQueen in everything, plus he also looks so good. I wish he was given more runtime and not shown to push Cruz against the wall in the end. That completely ruined his character for me. Cruz was also a pretty decent character. I see people talking about how Cruz ruined the movie, but she could have been worse, like the spy from Cars 2. Many previous cars are also given cameos like Doc Hudson, Ramone (yay!), Luigi, Guido, Mater, Sally among others. This is a good sign of the franchise continuing with those characters, unlike most animated sequels which completely discard all the characters from the previous movies.

And most importantly, it's the message that this movie gives that makes it memorable. Cars gave the message that humility and being down to earth is what makes a better person, no matter how much successful they become. Cars 2 didn't give a message, it was just a spy movie and that's why it got so much hate. Here the message is more of a question. If Lightning wanted, he could have just added new parts and become a faster racer. He could have used crooked means like Chick Hicks if he wanted. Or, he could have even won the race when he had the chance. But he didn't do any of this. The reason being, the fact that no matter how much edgy and ignorant he seems, deep down he is well aware of being a good person. And he used this to bring Cruz to the limelight she deserved and retired like a hero.

Cars 3 was a great movie in my opinion. The bad reviews don't matter much to me. But at the same time I also don't want this franchise to continue making movies like these. It had its fair share of problems and plot holes, which is why I removed two stars. I'd want this franchise to make more movies like the first one, which are more driven by character development and every scene is well constructed.

Cars 3 are not only better than the second part, but overall, in my opinion, it is the best part of the whole series. The animation is beautiful and the story is excellent. Although the soundtrack doesn't surpass the first part, it's fine, but the whole thing saves the story I don't want to spoiler, so I won't say more. An excellent film for me, and if you didn't like number two, you don't have to worry. The film returns more to number one and you don't even have to see the second part, because there is probably no mention of it at all. Expand
