I love james bond. Cars 2 is like james bond but with cars and mater. I think this shouldve ended with mcqueen and mater dying.

When a Pixar movie tries to be original, it dives deep into the proposition. When the premise is more cliché, Pixar usually lands in a comfort zone that attracts the public.

But "Cars 2" delivers none of that. The film simply isn't the best way to continue what was presented in the first film - by the way, anyone who watches "Cars 3" right after "Cars" won't miss "Cars 2".

Looking on the bright side, at least the animation is still pretty good (Pixar never fails in that regard), as is the voice acting (although not all of the new characters are charismatic enough).

This by far the worst Pixar movie ever, because they're not supposed to put Mater as the main character.

The writing in this movie is beyond the level of the average film viewer. The story of Finn McMissile and the story of Tow Mater's rise to becoming a true spy is truly something spectacular. Nothing will ever come close to being as good as this masterpiece. Many films will try to replicate it, but they will all fail and fall hard. Finn McMissile is one of the greatest characters ever since the creation of mankind and truly deserves a spinoff prequel series. Expand

I still have memories for when I first watched the first two when I was a kid. I think Cars 2 kind of scared me when I was like 8 or 7 years old. Now I'm a high schooler, where I have strong opinions on a lot of things. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna be hating on this movie just because it isn't as charming or sweet as Cars 1. Cars 2 has its own unique style of blending Pixar with the action genre, and it blends perfectly. Will it appeal to kids like me when I was 7? I don't know. I don't even know why they rated it G in the first place. But if they think Cars 2 will definitely appeal to fans who enjoyed the first movie, as well as Mater, I think it'll most likely work. Expand

Of course it has bad points, I agree only with 2 statements: Mater is a little annoying character and the film departs from the main theme of the franchise. Actually, I don't even consider the second statement a disadvantage of the film, because Cars 2 is something different, a bit hard to understand for children, but fun and interesting to watch for teens and adults.

Cars 2 has various characters with their different personalities. We have narcissistic Francesco, we have experienced, smart, brave and charismatic Finn. Graphics and soundtrack are also on a top level. Especially I want to highlight the soundtrack. Why the soundtrack, but not the graphics? Because graphics is always great in every Pixar movie, yeah, of course nowadays graphics in 90's and some of 00's Pixar movies are not that good, but it surely looked amazing when the movies just released. The soundtrack for Cars 2 is made by Michael Giacchino, he is a famous composer, who made soundtrack for a lot of popular films such as: Matt Reeves Planet of the Apes, MCU Spider-Man, The Batman (2022) and also Pixar's The Incredibles, The Incredibles 2, Ratatouille and etc. The music in Cars 2 is absolutely amazing, great spy movie soundtrack that gives me goosebumps. Epic Finn McMissle theme, Tokyo theme that is really nice to listen to and the Lemon Pledge theme with a growing tension. Personally, I really want to see Cars 4 being an another Cars spy movie with McMissle, but I would like to see it more dark and dismal, as Cars 2 actually should had been before the change of the plot. I would like to see Cars 4 with a new old antagonist that should had been the villain in Cars 2 - ZIL. I would like to see Cars 4 much more interesting and popular. But all these dreams are just my dreams. To sum up, I want to say that I don't consider Cars 2 a bad film, I think it's a great animated movie, even if my opinion is an effect of nostalgia (I really loved cartoons in my childhood, and Cars movies were one of my favourite films). I don't consider Cars 2 concept a bad idea, as you have already understood after I told about my dreams about Cars 4. But I don't think that expectations about that movie were high, they were just different.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love this movie, this movie absolutely changed my ENTIRE LIFE! I was a lonely construction worker who did nothing but build roads in three seconds. When I went to the theaters, I was going to go see the hit movie paul. But something about the poster of cars 2 struck my attention, I started drooling at the sight of mater. I stole a box of nutter butters and ran to the theater while security was chasing me. I hid in one of the seats so that way the guards don't see me. The movie made me move to London so that way I could kyjack any cars that looked remotely like the villain guy Professor Zündapp. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!! First of all, I want every social studies teacher to show this OUTSTANDING movie. This is HIGHLY educational because it can teach children a lot about different countries and teach them good morals. My favorite part was when they went to Italy, that part is HIGHLY education and VERY accurate to the real thing. MATER is even better in this movie than he usually is. Larry the technician was AMAZING for this SILLY LITTLE TOW TRUCK! This movie's story is also a page-turner, I cried when fin mc missle called mater a STUPID IDIOT! WWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! It was SO SAD! Just thinking about it makes me have a full-on mental breakdown! So anyway, THANK YOU FOR THIS MOVIE! I watch it EVERY DAY! I don't have a home or food or water, as cars 2 is the only thing that satisfies me, and it's the only thing I will ever need. Expand

By the way, "rare" is hyperbole. The only Pixar movie that didn't really catch the public's eye (at least critically) was "Cars 2".

Although it doesn't disappoint in the dubbing (praise for the additions of Michael Caine, Eddie Izzard, John Turturro and Emily Mortimer), nor in the animation (Pixar never disappoints in this regard), the script is weak and even Michael Giacchino - one of the best composers of film scores from the last few years - delivers a work that is less than expected.

"Cars 2" is so weak compared to its predecessor that it surprised the existence of "Cars 3" - but to be fair, "Cars 3", even with its problems, is still much better than "Cars 2".

I love Mater, and it’s great that he gets to have his own film. He has so much charm and personality that it is difficult not to love him. He may act silly from time to time, but that’s what makes him so great.

The plot is pretty well executed. Most modern spy films are confusing and don’t make sense, but things are a lot easier to follow here. Even the villains are great characters - the fact they pretty much work as a family make them so much more relatable, especially considering what they have had to put up with.

The film’s message about being yourself and not letting others change you is honestly a lesson far too many people take for granted. Thank you, Cars 2, for entertaining me and reaching my heart in multiple ways.

I was pretty disappointed with the fact that Cars lacked too much action. It was entirely based on character development, something the 7 year old me wasn't interested. I wanted the cars to race, fight, blow each other to smithereens. But that movie had none of that. Although I still loved that franchise. So when I saw the trailer of this movie and how there's going to be so much spy movie stuff, I thought it was exactly what I wanted. And I wasn't even wrong. In fact before reading the reviews I didn't even know I was supposed to hate it.

The way the movie opened, I already knew I was in for some good time. This was EXACTLY what I wanted to see in a Cars movie - action! Finn was such a badass, escaping from an entire boat crew and handling the mission single handedly on ground. Though Mater dragging that old car would have been a bit more fun if they actually showed Lightning McQueen win those Piston Cups, I'm okay with this. I just like to see cars do anything in this movie. And that's exactly what this movie is about - so many cars in every screen coming together in a colourful visual.

I don't think there have been any Pixar movies which show someone get murdered on screen. This movie not only shows it, but absolutely makes us see the tension that is arousing. For that matter every tension in this movie is arousing. That combined with Mater's character development and the fact that we get to see a movie from Mater's point of view instead of the otherwise used McQueen really made me like it. People often say that Axlerod being the bad guy wasn't a very big revelation, but personally I was surprised when that was revealed.

Sure this movie isn't on the same level as Incredibles 2 or Finding Dory, but it is unique in its own league. Unlike most Pixar movies which have a message to give, this one is just "boom-bang-crash-doink". It's exactly what I had wanted from a Cars movie, although it was clichéd and cringy in some parts, I liked it for all of that.

It is true that this film is not like others Pixar films. But it is not acctualy so bad. Many review-writers is telling that this film is huge disappointment, and I think it is not true. I think that expectations was too big.

So,this is story about cars. About one friendship. They are completely different, but they are best friends. There is lot of nice, simple humor in the story. The scenario is "smooth" and it is easy watchable. There are much of action, surprises, cool techniques, like in James Bond. Yes,we could not expect that, but it is really OK .The characters are in many different places and they are meeting a different people. Characters are 3D,they have feelings and we feel empathy about them.

But,there is a "dark side" of film, which is not like Pixar. Enemies, propaganda and that stuff. These problems confuses and my 10 year old brother. It is not ugly or violent, it is just confusing to kids.

About animation,I will not discuss. It is still Pixar;great animations and visuals and everything about it.

This is family film and it is really relaxing and enjoyable. Maybe sometimes is confusing, but it is not acctualy so bad. Because of action and messages that film gives: 10/10..

But why they thought to make it almost a completely different movie from its predecessor is also beyond me. Cars 2 has been known as the black sheep of PIXAR movies and where I certainly don't hate it myself I can understand why people would. It's annoying, not very entertaining, and drastically different from the first Cars and not in a good way. I don't know why they needed to add spies to the "Cars" universe and focus heavily on them. I also don't know why they decided to make the side character Mater the protagonist of this story. He's good for laughs but he doesn't need a character arc. Because of this, all the emotions they go for in this movie fall really flat. I felt hardly anything while watching this movie, I hardly laughed, and I found myself cringing more than smiling. I can't help but think about all the families being shocked at how much violence is in this movie considering the very tame first Cars. However, this movie is not awful in my opinion. It's probably not even the worst PIXAR movie in my opinion (Good Dinosaur holds that title). But this movie definitely doesn't need to exist. Even some of PIXAR's worst still has some good talent and hard work in there, so this isn't even close to the worst animated movie of all time, but it is certainly a step back from what PIXAR is usually able to accomplish from their stories. TheIn one of the animation giant's more confusing moves, Pixar's "Cars 2" not only abandons everything that made its predecessor a simple and quaint love letter to the American small town, it completely abandons the original genre as well. The transition from comedy to spy film is no small feat and "Cars 2" really makes it look as such, struggling mightily to balance its disparate elements. The funny thing is that the parts in play aren't necessarily bad on their own. The conflict and eventual resolution between Lightning McQueen and Mater is fine, the international grand prix sequences are colorful enough to watch and the espionage set pieces vary from decent to surprisingly entertaining. Problem is, none of these individual pieces really go together very well, thus resulting in what's easily Pixar's most forgettable effort to date. Expand

Expand

This is Pixar's bottom of the barrel and I hope they never ever do a disaster like this anymore. I'd already said it: spin-offs or sequels with the comic relief from the previous movie as the protagonist are destined to be BAD and this movie proves me right, it's no exception.
The plot has absolutely nothing to do with the previous movie and focuses on a "James Bond" kind of spoof, what a brilliant idea, Pixar. There's nothing emotional, there's nothing exciting, interesting, there's no cute message, there's no conflict, there's nothing "Pixar" in its writing, the magic this company has is absolutely missing in this and it's nothing than an hour and a half waste of time. This is not a movie that was made to tell a story that people from all ages can enjoy and get something from, this is a soulless product that was made because Disney and Pixar want to sell more Cars toys and make a movie just with the money in mind without caring about anything else is the worst thing any filmmaker can ever do, it's the most deadly sin in cinema.

Cars 3 is a far superior movie (Still not a great movie) and it's what this movie should've been in the first place.

Some say it's cash grabbing, Pixar selling out just so that Disney can sell toys, but when I was watching it all I saw was the animators' love for cars. This was made for fans and not for adult critics - how they reimagined locales and included all the different cars and vehicles. It does differ than most Pixar movies in that it's not as "emotional" or heart touching; I actually think other Pixar films are over rated and feel like they're always trying to force scenes to make adults cry or something. But the spy themed story was pretty complicated and very similar to say Quantum of Solace. Some people found Mater to be annoying and I thought so too at first but after repeated viewings I could understand him and his friendship with McQueen felt more real. The jokes were enjoyable and definitely smarter than animated films from other companies. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cars 2 was 2 hours of awesome! It had action packed scenes, cool characters, and a very amazing soundtrack that perfectly complemented and paired well with the scenes. I cried many times during the movie, may it be laughter or sadness, the move was filled with emotion that related to me on a personal level. There were very sensual and sexual scenes too, like on the first race in Tokyo, where Francesco and McQueen were having a chat, or in Italy, at the Lemon Party, and at the plane where Holly and Finn were smoothing out Mater’s bumps and dents. After seeing the movie, I swear on my life that it cured me of my AIDS that I got whenever I have sex while watching the movie. Why watch porn when you can watch this magnum opus. I fap at least once a day to Cars 2, it helps prevent prostate cancer. And sometimes when I forget to bring food when watching the film, I get hungry and I don’t want to take my eyes of the masterpiece, once I get on to the race scene, I feel full and bloated even if I haven’t eaten a few days. Since one movie will not be shown on cinemas for long, I bought Cars 2 on Blue-Ray. When I took home the disc, I became a very muscular Australian with golden hair, superhuman strength and the power over lightning. It also made my dick over 10 inches long. Suddenly hundreds vaginas appeared out of nowhere and started to attach to me. The only thing that saved me from drowning was the lightning powers, with a mighty KA-CHOW! I destroyed the genitals and fled. Even still today I am being persecuted. Their pursuit has not stopped even as I am typing this. I can still hear them. Moving closer and closer. I will run, they will walk, I will rest, they will not. Cars 2 has definitely changed my life. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cars 2 was a very emotional joyride that improved on the first story. It had very diverse set of appealing characters like Finn, Francesco, and all the new racers. This film had the most representation of any Pixar film. They had very colourful backgrounds that contrasted well with Mater's rusty shell. I liked the airplane scene, though short, it showed the development of Mater and McQueen's friendship. The animation quality became way better than the original Cars allowing for the animation of the many gadgets that Finn uses. Miles Axelrod, was a very cunning and well written character, the twist that he was the head lemon was hinted at throughout the whole movie and was beautifully implemented when it was revealed. And Cars 2 showed that Pixar know about ongoing racism and is not afraid to tackle it by the use of the "lemons". The lemons are oppressed and want to change, but the world is not kind. The social story of lemons was a very inspiring addition to the film. I recommend the people should watch this, young and old, it doesn't matter if you haven't seen Cars 1, everybody should watch this beautiful tale of action, espionage, emotion, society, and friendship. I watch Cars 2 a few times a day, that is how beautiful it is.The jokes were very funny and enjoyable, and there is a wonderful magical empowering score befitting a story like this. Mater reminds me of Steve Rogers when he said that "I know what you're going through. everybody has been laughing at me my entire life too, but becoming powerful and rich beyond your wildest dreams ain't gonna make you feel better." this has to be one of the best words spoken in film history, though the some of the lemons were not swayed, I was, and I live by those words. This movie, no, this Masterpiece has made me a better person. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film had a very compelling story, a relatable cast of characters, and beautiful settings. The spy plot complemented the story very well, I thought the shift of focus from McQueen to Mater was done perfectly. I really liked characters like Francesco and Finn. The film begins with an exciting and suspenseful scene on an oil rig, letting us know the character Finn will be, and giving us a taste of what the movie will be like. I also like the scene with the "Lemon Party" It was a very crucial and important scene that was very intense serious and suspenseful, this was complemented by Maters happy-go-lucky attitude. The film ends with Mater getting knighted in honor of his efforts to save London. This had to be one of the most beautiful moments in film history. After that, Mater and the gang went back to Radiator Springs, completing the hero's journey. In my words, Cars 2 has to be one of the best films is Cinema History Expand

Mcqueen was a jerk in this movie and it irked me that a best friend could be that mean to you if Lightning wasn't such a jerk this movie would've been a 6 but NO they have to make their characters mean so that the plot is a little more interesting and sad. The first 20 minutes of this movie were pretty good but after that it only went downhill. And also they tried to make this to much of a spy movie. Yes the spy plot could've been good in a spinoff Mater centric movie it just got exhausting having to focus on Mater do his spy stuff and focus on Lighting's racing scenes at the same time! Overall some parts of the movie were alright but overall Cars 2 left a bad taste in my mouth Expand

Visuals are fine, as are the characters, but focusing the story on Mater was not a good idea. McQueen's racing antics are sidelined in favour of a plot about a villainous car causing mayhem. Conceptually, this could have been decent, but the execution is flawed. One of the worst Pixar films.

Pretty good movie actually with beautiful animation, good music, interesting scenes and places, international race cars, Lightning McQueen and the it showed more of the Car world. The spy stuff and the plots involving oil, new fuel types, car discrimination and friendship might go over some kids heads but it is also rather interesting if you study it more. The only real issue that I have is with the character, Mater, himself. I am not a big Mater fan, of his personality type or humour but I can see why he appeals to kids and others, so maybe that's why he's the real star of this film.

Basically the film revolves around a plot to turn people (the cars) towards a new fuel type that's supposed to be better for them, and an international race is there to promote the fuel. However, the new fuel is really just gasoline and by making the new fuel look bad, by hurting the racers using the fuel, the cars behind all this hope to turn people back to oil ( there's a huge new secret oil field discovered by these guys early o in the film)and get rich and powerful. The cars doing this are 'lemon' cars or ones who are not well made and break down frequently and get made fun of.So they feel rather angry at the world for their poor treatment.

There are also spies (the good guys) from Britain, America, etc ( A rather James bond like one and a pretty purple Jaguar type)
and Mater basically gets mixed up in all this whilst Lightning races against a heap of other racers, though this really isn't paid as much attention to as it should have been. It all ends with mater uncovering the lead villain, making up with McQueen after an argument and has messages like be yourself and accept others. Good messages for children I suppose. The movie made me smile and laugh with it's over the top nonsense and beautiful animation, as well as amusing my nephew and nieces. The main issue though (with many people) is still Mater and his bumbling ways, the lack of attention to the races and Lightning, plus there was some violence like the American spy getting blown up and the racers engines blowing out from a lazer but I have seen worse. Anyone remember Littlefoot's mother being injured and dying? Now that's painful and scary cartoon violence. There was also the fact that Lightning doesn't win in any major races and the other characters from Radiator Springs felt like they were put in just to fill space.plus for a movie promoting international race scenes they only went to 3 places, whilst if you look at the Cars 2 artbook you can see that various other types of races (endurance, outback and ice) were planned, in a variety of places like Russia and Germany. Why Pixar didn't focus more on or include these is beyond me. It would have appealed to many to see more races, race types and countries I think and less of the Mater/spy stuff.

Still I do like the film and it isn't a depressing disappointment like Cars 3 is, so 8/10 for me. 2 of for Mater I'm afraid though.

There has yet to be a Pixar film that doesn't make more than $100 million or score a devoted following from both critics and audiences. The animation is gorgeous, the action sequences crisp, the voice acting impeccable, and the inside jokes funny. Cars 2 is not a masterpiece when stacked up against the Toy Story sequels, but it's a fun summer spectacle that will make kids think about what it means to really be yourself, even when there's pressure to change.
Mater is now the protagonist, and the world is the setting; while that expands the action and the automobile humor (geisha cars, the Queen as a vintage Rolls, and Prince Wheeliam as a Bentley), it does limit the amount of time that we spend with our old friends from Radiator Springs. Caine and Emily Mortimer are perfectly cast as the British intelligence agents who mistake Mater for an American spy, but in the end, this is Larry the Cable Guy's shining moment.

Okay, fine, you can have your moment, guys (don't worry, that's the last time I'll bring them into this, because I don't want the joke to stale out). After years upon years of critical success, Pixar's first true "misstep" arrived in 2011 in the form of "Cars 2," the sequel that not many were really craving in the first place, but it was made nonetheless and it became the first Pixar film to earn a "rotten" score on Rotten Tomatoes. Harsh, I know. All things considered, though, I personally enjoyed the film. I get why people didn't really like it (it wasn't the most poignant of Pixar films, nor was it the film with the most heart), but all in all, it was a really fun ride with some brilliant animation, exciting action scenes and good voice acting. Sure, it's silly, it's kiddy and it's not what we're used to out of Pixar, but "Cars 2" is still a pretty entertaining romp for the whole family.

One of the few that’s almost never cited is Cars. But John Lasseter’s one-dimensional and visually sub-stellar 2006 tribute to American auto culture did rake in an awful lot of merchandise money. Its reboot, Cars 2 – is equally so-so.
The last film was a tribute to Route 66, the American west and a 1951 Hudson Hornet. It was set in Radiator Springs, a place that its hero Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) dismissed at first as “hillbilly hell” before learning to love its decent, old-school ways. In Cars 2, Lasseter and co-director Brad Lewis have gone down the export route, relocating the action to Italy, Japan and swinging London.
McQueen heads to these cities to compete in a World Grand Prix organised by oil tycoon Miles Axlerod (Eddie Izzard) as a showcase for his alternative energy business. He’s accompanied by pal Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), a rusty pick-up truck, who initially embarrasses him, but later, when it turns out that a plan has been hatched to blow up the champ, saves him with feats of bravery and ingenuity.

The eye-filling backgrounds (a whirlwind world tourCars 2, even more than its predecessor, is the Pixar movie that's safe to hate. From the get-go, the franchise's main conceit seems blatantly secondhand: Anthropomorphized toys, anyone? The eye-filling backgrounds (a whirlwind world tour reduced to theme-park caricature, and I mean that in a nice way) and photo-real textures fail to compensate for the lack of variety in individual character animation. After a while, all I could see when I looked at Lightning McQueen, Mater, or anyone else, was a matched pair of craft-store googly eyes, pasted onto whiteboard, its expression as variable as the positioning of a foreskin-like uni-lid would allow, itself a concept lifted from Mike Wazowski, the one-eyed hero of Monsters, Inc.

The discrepancy between the photo-real and the slapdash effectively neutralizes any talk of Cars 2 being a work of great animation. It's a worse problem than the uncanny valley, the most commonly leveled charge against Robert Zemeckis's underrated Beowulf and A Christmas Carol; say what you will about dead eyes and a crack squad of Tom Hankses doing backflips, at least there's a consistency of tone, a unifying creative force. Cars 2 looks like the work of multiple committees completing various objectives, with varying degrees of success.

Which is a shame, because the brilliant unification of über-talented groups of tech and creative whiz kids—groupthink touched by the hand of God—is the alibi that grants Pixar safe haven from even its most vehement critics. Considered as a body of work, the Pixar feature films represent the Platonic ideal of corporate Hollywood: a perfect amalgam of verisimilitude and candy-color expressionism; humor that slaloms from puerile to Oscar Wilde without hitting any bumps; Spielbergian escapism and crisply choreographed action sequences; validation of that amorphous cloud of “humanist values” that no one can really describe in great detail, but which seems to have best been illustrated by the incinerator sequence in Toy Story 3.

Adding insult to injury is an unfocused script that relies heavily on some of the most unfortunate screenwriting clichés of post-1980s Hollywood. One, in particular, stands out: the “friends who have a falling out because one of them is a hopeless imbecile and the other one says so, only to reconcile just in time for the big finish,” which I believe dates back to 1992's Pauly Shore vehicle Encino Man. This cliché is infuriating because it argues that an already implausible friendship grants absolution to all manner of lunatic, anti-social, and destructive behavior. If this sounds prudish on my part, consider the TV scripts of Joss Whedon, whose own career was jumpstarted by co-writing the Oscar-nominated script for the original Toy Story. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly are rife with characters making bad, selfish, or just plain lunkheaded decisions, but never without consequences. Consider the scene where Mal nearly throws Jayne out of the airlock, and the genuine uncertainty as to whether or not he'll really do it—that's the kind of drama Cars 2 could have benefited from, big time.

That said, while the craft is sometimes shoddy, the photorealism is there solely for our kneejerk admiration (my my, how long that metallic sheen must have taken to render!), and the **** script is altogether unworthy of the legacy of Ratatouille, Up, WALL-E, or even the first Cars, there are isolated moments of pleasure, most of them in a cold open that meticulously recreates an outlandish James Bond espionage and escape sequence. The high point is the cold open to the cold open, a video left by an intrepid undercover agent, a visually incoherent stitch of animation that, in its abstraction, makes for a refreshing change from the exhausting “clarity of line” that governs, and fails to redeem, most of the rest of the film.

Hawaiian Vacation revisits the Toy Story gang who, after Ken and Barbie are left behind from Bonnie’s summer holiday, recreate a perfect tropical idyll for the Mattel lovebirds to share their first kiss. It is pitch-perfect Pixar: a strong set-up delivered with jokes, filmmaking flair, perfect character moments — Mr. Pricklepants’ alien audition is genius — smarts and sentiment, all topped off with a post-credits payoff that works a treat.

This reminder of Pixar’s high benchmark doesn’t make life any easier for Cars 2. Coming off the back of the studio’s least favourably reviewed film — it currently sits at 74 per cent at Rotten Tomatoes — and one of its lower-grossing flicks (it made $462 million worldwide so it’s all relative), the movie has built itself up into a franchise through a series of shorts and spin-off merchandise. A kind of Doc Hollywood with a NASCAR replacing Michael J. Fox, the original was that rare children’s film that suggested you ease up a bit, live life in the slow lane. This time round, things have been amped up considerably, transplanting hot rod Lightning McQueen and thicko tow truck Mater not only into a globe-trotting Grand Prix, but also into a slick espionage flick circa 1966. The two strands never really cohere, but deliver enough spy-cool, visual fizz and comedic touches to entertain.

From the retro fittings of The Incredibles to WALL•E’s adoration of Hello Dolly, Pixar has always been enamoured with ’60s pop culture, and Cars 2 positively thrums with it. From Michael Giacchino’s stupidly catchy Finn McMissile guitar riffs, to a delight in gizmos and gadgetry, to impenetrable coded secret-agent greetings, this is a love letter not only to 007, but also to American counterparts like The Man From U. N. C. L. E. and Get Smart. A terrific opening set-piece sees Michael Caine’s Finn McMissile, an Aston Martin overflowing with Q Department firepower, infiltrate the baddies’ oil rig and the subsequent escape is a potent reminder that Pixar can hold its own against anybody in the action stakes. Be it a nighttime Tokyo race or a high-speed runway rumpus courtesy of Jason Isaacs’ spy plane, Cars 2 is at its best when it is on the move.

It is in the bits between the action, the Pixar specialities of plot points and character beats, that the movie does less well. The narrative is admirably complicated — everyone is chasing a camera which can generate an electro-magnetic pulse that can destroy the cars mid race — but offers little in the way of surprises. There are tons of new characters but, save the Brit spy duo of McMissile and Emily Mortimer’s Holley Shiftwell and John Turturro’s Formula 1 demon Francesco Bernoulli, few register.

It is also hard to remember a more talk-driven Pixar movie, but little of the dialogue crackles or pops. There are first-base jokes about cultural difference, wasabi mistaken for ice cream hijinks, over-emotional Italians and wrong-side-of-the-road gags. The relationship dynamics between McQueen and Mater are too simply drawn, the moralising, as McQueen asks his gauche friend to change to fit into the wider world, too on the nose. It’ll play perfectly for the young but, for once with Pixar, that’s all it does.

As ever, there are stunning little grace notes (watch the mud speckle the camera as the race cars speed by), lovingly realised street scenes and the frame is filled with inspired visual puns. But the film never truly finds its mojo, its heartbeat. If you want a barometer of the difference between top-drawer Pixar and Cars 2, you could do worse than listen to the songs. Randy Newman’s songs for the Toy Story series are smart, charming and heartfelt. Country star Brad Paisley’s tunes are pleasant but forgettable. The former will last for the ages. The latter works well enough for now.

Motors with eyes for windshields, pootling about a four-wheeled world modeled on auto parts? It may be John Lasseter's pride and joy, but for us it's missing some key components.

Internal logic for one. Charm. Car-isma...

Ok, so the 2006 original eventually won us over with its fish-out-of-water storyline and its nostalgic passion for Americana. But not so much that we were craving another outing for Lightning McQueen and his tow-truck mate Mater, hardly the Butch and Sundance of the animated fraternity.

Seemingly guessing as much, the Emeryville elite seek to woo us with a pre-feature short, Hawaiian Vacation, that joyously reunites the Toy Story gang. Sadly, like a clapped-out banger, this gambit backfires. We love Buzz and Woody, while we merely tolerate Mater and McQueen. Why waft champagne under our noses when we are really getting Car-va?

To be fair, Cars 2 begins well with a Bondian prologue which sees suave superspy Finn McMissile - voice Michael Caine, body DB5 - sneak onto an offshore oil platform at the centre of a global gasoline conspiracy.

Goldfinger gags abound in the ensuing mayhem, raising hopes that Lasseter has heeded the critics and upped the ante accordingly. But once the action defaults to Radiator Springs, the movie springs a leak, mostly by putting clueless hick Mater centre stage.

Yes, it is Owen Wilson's hotshot racer who gets invited to compete in a World Grand Prix that whisks him to Japan (Geishas, neon), Italy (Popemobile) and Britain (Big Bentley, Tyre Bridge). But it's Mater who gets embroiled in McMissile's mission, a convoluted caper involving alternative fuel, millionaire mogul Miles Axlerod (Eddie Izzard) and rookie agent Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer).

Mater scuppering an assassination attempt in a Tokyo restroom. Mater careering around an international airport. Mater infiltrating a villain convention in elaborate disguise. Yes, we sure do get a lot of the bumbling rust-bucket this time around, testing our patience for Larry the Cable Guy's hillbilly schtick to braking point.

True, the picture is punctuated by three thrilling race meets that find McQueen and tutti-frutti nemesis Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro) justifying the now obligatory 3D as they negotiate spectacular Scalextric-style courses.

What should be highlights though have more than a clutch of afterthought, particularly during an extended London-set climax more interested in the plastic attached to Mater's carburettor (some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!) than who gets to the finish line first.

Cars' popularity with the kids ensures a large and enthusiastic audience will turn up for the sequel.

Yet where Pixar's other films have captivated across the board, Cars 2 could leave some grown-ups feeling tired.

There's more going on than there was in Cars and the globe-trotting's a gas. But compared to the pick of the Pixar pack, this is some way down the grid.

It's easy on the eyes but it doesn't have anywhere near as much as heart and depth as some other Pixar greats. I wasn't overly keen on the first film so a second one seemed pretty redundant.

The transition from the "Hot-shot comes to small town and learns life lessons" theme of the first to a spy movie was a bit odd but there were still some entertaining gags. Mater was a great part of the first so it was nice to see him get more screen time. And it was clever to have the James Bond parody be an Aston Martin but it was a bit weak in parts. Perhaps this wouldn't be a problem if we hadn't come to expect so much from Pixar but we have. Who knows-maybe Cars 3 will be better. Maybe it'll be a third time lucky situation. But the movie does have it's charms, it's by no means bad. Just a bit disappointing compared to most Pixar films. Expand

I enjoyed this film more than the first. I love that spy story where Mater involves. It's a funny film! Why too many dislikers... anyway I'm not a huge fan and I'm not really waiting for the 3 because I don't think it's necessary.

I mean, it made $27.5 million on opening weekend! Plus all the merchandise, both Disney and Pixar would be rolling in it! This film was a pretty lousy waste of time. Definitely Pi thxars worst film yet. It wasn't worth the price of admission. I found the race flag I got when I saw it in 2011 and I chopped it into little pieces. Was that too cruel? Expand

Though many of the visuals are winningly vibrant and sleek, what is lacking here is PIXAR's most notable characteristic: a compelling, clever story and boundless heart.

The characters — talking, living cars — are nowhere near as likable, emotionally rich or complex as the playthings of the Toy Story movies, the rodents of Ratatouille, the undersea creatures of Finding Nemo or the endearing robot of WALL-E.

Where the original Cars (2006) lagged somewhat behind the rest of the exceptional PIXAR pack (I did like the first Cars, though), Cars 2, in computer-animated 3-D, seems to idle in neutral.

The news that the film was directed by John Lassester, the affable Pixar mastermind who gave us the first Toy Story, raised hopes that this would be another Up or Toy Story 3. By the way, UP is one of my favorite movies.

PIXAR movies are so much more evolved than most other fare — animated or live action — that watching Cars 2 feels like stumbling on a Neanderthal amid a corps of advanced Homo sapiens.

Race car champ Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) has just returned to Radiator Springs to spend some time with his hometown pals. But almost as soon as he arrives, he's challenged to race overseas in the first World Grand Prix, a contest to determine the world's fastest car. He takes his pit crew buddies along and adds rusty tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), who means well but botches things up for Lightning.

Mater is such an overgrown toddler that he leaks petrol in excitement. (This gussied-up bathroom humor seems a rare effort to pander to very young viewers.) Lightning faces an arch-rival, Italian race car, Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro), and Mater gets embroiled in a top-secret spy mission at the behest of British super-spy Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and his cohort, Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer). Lightning and Mater face a bump in the road when it comes to their long friendship, but the message about loyalty is a sound one.

In contrast to the nostalgia-drenched original, this retread is an amalgam of spy movies, sort of James Bond-lite on auto-pilot though it is a wee more interesting than the first.

Though the locales are more far-flung than Radiator Springs, the movie doesn't benefit from the exotic spots and polyglot voices. A lot of locations are raced through, but the events happening in them are less than fascinating.

A few ingenious action sequences benefit from the 3-D technology, but too much emphasis is placed on explosions, high-octane road races and watered-down global intrigue. Mild humor is passable. But will young kids follow the convoluted mystery surrounding an oilfield and possibly compromised alternative fuel?

Something PIXAR Animation has never been is formulaic. But Cars 2 teeters on the brink. It's not that it's a bad film. But the bar is high, and it's lackluster and predictable, missing that alchemic blend of humor, pathos and indelible characters that give Pixar movies their brilliant shine. And it's a lot more violent.

I feel very bad for the company. Cars 2 felt like a wreck compared to the masterpieces of some other works of PIXAR (Toy Story, Finding Nemo, UP) and it also wrecked the true state of the PIXAR logo. But it's slightly enjoyable. Although Brave and Monsters University are good movies, they didn't fix the true state logo that PIXAR was back then. I am counting days away till Inside Out releases (it's out now) and I definitely know that this movie will fix the state of the true PIXAR logo.

Yet in a shocking miscalculation, the usually brilliant folks over at Pixar coped with Newman’s death in the stupidest possible way—by transforming John Lasseter’s shiny love letter to the automobile into an unabashed vehicle for the hayseed comedy stylings of Larry The Cable Guy. Larry The Cable Guy’s hillbilly tow truck Mater must have sold a lot of toys and played like gangbusters for focus-group respondents, because Cars 2 makes the vehicular redneck its proud centerpiece. That leaves Owen Wilson, the film’s ostensible star, to fret about the state of his relationship with his best friend Mater. Itchy & Scratchy Studios didn’t push Poochie on audiences the way Cars 2 does Mater.

Cars 2 sends Mater and Wilson’s Lightning McQueen on a globe-trotting trek to compete in an international Grand Prix that doubles as a showcase for an amazing new wonder-fuel. In Europe, Mater unwittingly lives out the plot of The Man Who Knew Too Little when he gets entangled in a web of intrigue involving a James Bond-style car voiced by Michael Caine and his more-than-capable associate Holley Shiftwell. Yes, in Cars 2, Mater even gets the girl.

The first Cars was pitched at a much younger audience than the rest of Pixar’s oeuvre; the sequel is pitched even more directly at an even younger audience. It’s difficult to insert scatological humor into a film devoid of human bodily functions, but Cars 2 nevertheless manages to smuggle some in via Mater “leaking fluids” and at one point ending up in a lavatory truck. Cars 2 is so enraptured with Larry The Cable Guy’s persona that it even has Mater spout the comedian’s catchphrases, though the more Mater insists something is just funny right there, the less funny it becomes. This being Pixar, Cars 2 looks fantastic, but the studio has never given audiences—especially audiences over the age of 10—less reason to be emotionally invested in the beautiful shiny things flying across the screen.

(Preceding the film is a clever short from the Toy Story universe involving Ken and Barbie’s crudely improvised Hawaiian vacation. This provides an unflattering reminder of what a really good Pixar sequel looks like.)

Here, not only the characters are well-voiced but also it's visuals have improved that often looks glorious and stunning. It has many amazing action sequences and exploding scenes but this film is technically does not belong to PIxar's top mastery works. Cars 2 is the only sequel that received a rotten rating from all other rating websites; and the question is, Why? It is because of its carelessly handled storytelling that's so complicated to understand that it wants to become like the greatest action movie you never before seen on animation -- intended to become like a James Bond film or any spy film. So because of that bad storytelling. We can see now that Pixar somehow loses magic and credibility in crafting innovative, original, and outstanding stories which we have seen from its past Academy Award winning films like those of Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3. No heartfelt or improving drama, no cleverly crafted gags. Cars 2, fairly, does not belong to the list of the worst animations produced on screen but it is rendered as a mediocre film. Overall, it's still watchable and quite enjoyable for some scenes which are somewhat smart, intelligent and quite funny. Expand

There was a lot of cliche things in this film that felt so pointless and stupid; the characters also didn't feel as memorable in this as they did in the first Cars, they just felt bland and also that addition of making Mater like a secret agent or something, that's just not fitting for the Cars series really when comparing this to the first film. It's a shame that Pixar actually made a film like this, I mean PIXAR! The company that has made so many masterpieces like the Toy Story films, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Wall-E; now this, Pixar's first film that's only point was just to sell a bunch of toys. I would not recommend this film, after seeing this I was hoping that Pixar would never do something like this again, well apparently they inspired The Planes series, which looks terrible (luckily they are not making those) but it doesn't stop there, Pixar may have pleased a lot of fans announcing The Incredibles 2, but while doing that they also displeased us by announcing Cars 3. This is not Pixar, I remember when every film Pixar made was great and had no intention of just existing just to make money, but to also tell amazing stories. While Pixar isn't completely doomed today (I did like MU), I just wonder if they'll ever make a new film that actually has quality and lives up to their oldest and most classic films. Expand
