Otherwise its a very mediocre film. The most memorable part of the film was the song played during the closing credits - which was brilliant! Expand

This movie is centered around a baby crying. I had to turn the volume down constantly. Who thought that this was a good idea?

The plot begins with the idiot protagonist trope, which is becoming unforgivable in zombie movies, and devolves into a plodding vehicle for diversity messaging. Netflix botched the remake.

The image of the boat in the opening scene looks boring and cheap. In the further course of the film, the director does not manage to show interesting pictures or build tension. The story is completely boring and the end is more than embarrassing, in connection with the serious narrative and presentation.
Maybe you should have taken some humor or make the movie much darker. So it remains a wannabe zombie movie that is just as pale, boring and unpretentious as an instagram model or advertising film for cosmetics

It is a pretty paint by numbers zombie film, but there is the twist that instead of the main character looking for a cure, or just trying to survive, he has to try and secure a new home for his daughter before his infection kills him (and then turns him into a zombie). Martin Freeman is great as always and Simone Landers (who plays the young tribal girl) was surprisingly good. The problem I have with this film is that nothing about it is particularly great. It's just...okay. Also, for a film that's not much longer than 100 minutes, the story has some real slow points where I started to lose some interest...but then the final act brought me back. Overall, Cargo is a perfectly "okay" film, it just doesn't stand out in any specific way. Expand

Some novel ideas in this, but not enough is done with them. Martin Freeman is quite good. I have a strong feeling I won't remember this very well in a few months.

I feel like Ive got the plague now after surviving 20 minutes of this goofy movie. Why don't they just drop the baby in the forest and let her fend for herself? It's a fine movie if it has me hoping in the first hour that all the characters will just die already! And why do they keep talking to the dumb baby? Poor baby has a life of misery ahead of it anyway if it's just half as ugly as Martin Freeman and half as dumb as the wife. Expand

Apart from a decent opening and good visuals, this film is dumb and tedious in the extreme.

It is definitely average at best. Sure it does some things right in terms of the character potential (mind you it's just just that they have the potential to be good and charisma) and the setting as well as atmosphere. However the characters are just stupid, there's no other way of putting it. The whole movie would be preventable if the characters had thought before they do something. The dialogue and actions of some of the characters are also very questionable. It feels like A movie cinematography wise, A movie premise and C at best characters, dialogue and execution. Expand

With sincerity I think this should have stayed like a short-film. The way in which the most important events of the first hour take place like everything that happens to his wife are so unlikely that they border the ridicule.
At least it ends

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thanks to the success of The Walking Dead, we've been inundated with zombie movies the past few years. We've gotten movies with slow zombies, fast zombies, stripper zombies; the list goes on and on. While there are many examples of great films that feature the lumbering walking dead, many fall flat due to the market’s oversaturation. In order to be successful nowadays, the film needs to have something to set it apart from the cookie cutter format, which the newly released Cargo does damn well. Based on the short film of the same name, which you can view on YouTube here, the feature length film follows Andy, played by Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock) who is trying to keep his wife and daughter safe during a zombie outbreak in the Australian wilderness.

The film begins an unknown time after the outbreak took place, with the family taking shelter in a houseboat. Running low on supplies, the parents take turns scavenging wherever they can to feed the family. After a poor decision resulting in the mother being bitten, causing her to attack Andy, he is left with 48 hours to find someone or some place to safely leave his baby daughter. Along his journey, he comes across a staggering number of other survivors in a short amount of time - some are friendly and empathetic to his situation while others are more sadistic. Much like The Walking Dead, the zombies prove to be much less of a threat than the other survivors.

The zombies featured in the film are fairly unique, albeit a bit dumb at times, even by zombie standards. The film’s version of the disease turns the victim into a mindless creature that appears to be prone to what appears to be seizures and slamming their heads into walls, as well as taking on the appearance of someone who violently face planted into a bee hive, with chunks of who knows what and a thick honey-like goo leaking from their eyes. The results are simply terrifying, despite most of the violence and gore taking place tastefully off screen or out of focus.

Since we know of Andy's inevitable fate, there is a true sense of dread that lingers throughout most of the film. Since we know early into the film that his ending will not be a happy one, most viewers will hold out hope that his daughter will find safe haven. This makes every set back even more devastating. Keeping in mind the child is a baby, who could go into a random screaming fit at any time, you'll likely be on the edge of your seat throughout. I found it mildly hilarious that he was able to find a sitter multiple times throughout the movie while he went out performing various tasks during the zombie apocalypse; meanwhile, I am begging people to watch my kid so I can go out to a movie. I'd make another The Walking Dead comparison here, but I think I am beating that into the ground.

The biggest issue with the story is the cheesy villain, who holds almost comic book super villain aspirations. While others are seeking out food and essentials for survival, he's hunting the zombies for their valuables, hoarding items and non-essential supplies. This is coupled with an obvious physical trait makes it fairly easy to avoid him, which I will withhold to avoid spoilers. He doesn't hold a candle to any of The Walking Dead's rogue gallery. And that’s counting the stupid emo kid who ate people and lasted half of a season.

While there are a number of zombie flicks you can devote your time too, Cargo is well worth the time invested. It does not reinvent the genre the way The Dawn of the Dead remake or 28 Days Later did, but it does add something different to the genre.

it's the maker's love for the genre that never reaches the viewers..

Cargo When such an idea is to be executed that has already been explored in plenty of ways, the bar raises itself which becomes immensely impossible to meet let along surpass it. And the script in here fails to do so as it lacks every essential bit of drama that drives such features. The stakes projected in here is the typical mumbo-jumbo that is too shallow which undermines the tension among the characters and the sense of urgency too isn't communicated to that extent. Surprisingly, this is a character driven feature and the execution is exceptionally good especially for a debutant director Yolanda Ramke for a motion picture. As much as Yolanda's work is appreciative, it also raises question on the very existence of it as the screenplay (which she co-wrote with Ben Howling) never breeds the crisp out of the premise. The performance objective is pretty much left upon Martin Freeman who doesn't disappoint on his portrayal even though being restrained a bit with such a narrow range. The technical aspects like make-up and choreography isn't upto the mark although the production design and few tiny detailed tricks are ingenious (Martin Freeman getting out of a cage is something to look forward to). The world projected in here isn't as thought-provoking as the makers think which opens the portal that drags it down whenever it reaches out for something bigger due to a somewhat flawed takes on its track. The short runtime, gripping screenplay and few unpredictable turns in the feature helps one survive it and makes it worth a watch at least for once. Cargo excels in executing the accuracy of the bubble that its pragmatic characters resides in and when it comes to keep the audience engaged through 90 minutes it doesn't fail to do so and if it would have went for a smarter and newer perspective, the trajectory would have been intriguing enough to invest in it. It's the makers love for the genre that never reaches the viewers.

Nevertheless, its an interesting film that is worth giving your time towards

A massively underrated zombie movie with a great performance from Martin Freeman.

It suffers from some weird editing at times and a not very original plot, but it's just the kind of zombie movie I like.

Some elements of the plot don't work quite as well as others, but I still appreciate it for trying.

Will it leave any lasting impression in me? Probably not, but it's great to see a geniunely good zombie film once in a while.

This is the second best zombie movie with Martin Freeman in it.
