Ok movie where she fights aliens and humans. They could have made more sense of the story. Captain Marvel was a man back then not a woman too.

My main complaint is Brie Larson. I don't know if it's her acting, the writing, or a combination of both, but she's painfully unlikable here and that's the last thing you want from a superhero protagonist.

I also thought the exposition was too obvious and frequent. It could have been handled more organically.

From review bombs on Rotten tomatoe and metacritic to a poor box office the notion of a female superhero led movie annoyed a large majority. It is on no way a bad movie. It sticks to the time & tested marvel original story formula but what does hobble this movie is how it's so rushed and stiff. Carol is an astonishing confident heroine who on her journey to find herself discovers a life altering secret that would change her life permanently. Based in the 90's it leans into it's references both in it's cinematography and set design which I enjoyed given my own feelings for the later years of that decade. But what made the movie a one watch movie was that it didn't make an impression, you couldn't care for it's characters or even take the threat of it's villains seriously. It's a respectable attempt that ultimately misses it's own point Expand

Super bland the only fun or interesting scenes is when Carol is with Nick Fury. I feel like Captain Marvel works better as a supporting character than getting a movie like Doctor Strange or Ant-Man.

But still she was introduced. So the fans must assume her story to be something on the same level of the other new characters that were introduced in Phase III, particularly just before Avengers: Endgame. There were Doctor Strange and Black Panther who had their own fun adventures just before Infinity War, which is really needed if the movie wants the audience to actually care about that character when heroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America etc are also present on the same screen. But sadly, Captain Marvel wasn't able to live upto the hype.

I'm in no means saying that this is an absolutely horrible movie. I really liked it, but only as long as the movie was running. Once the movie was over I was like, "Wait, why was I so excited again?". I went to watch the movie as an absolute blank slate. I had heard of Brie Larson giving a controversial statement, but I'm not gonna judge an entire movie over one actress' behaviour. Rather I'd judge it because of the content that was in it. And that's what I'm gonna do.

This movie absolutely nails the 90s vibe. The characters look just as ugly as we used to look in our 90s pictures. The introduction of a young Nick Fury, the plot twist, the Stan Lee cameo, the CGI - I liked it all. But what I didn't like was, well, to put it in simpler words, literally everything else. The acting, music, costumes (when Monica was seeing the different colour combinations she saw all the awesome ones and rejected them, and finally chose the ugliest one), and even the revelation of how Nick Fury got an eyepatch were terrible.

In my opinion this was the worst MCU movie made in the third phase, not just because it lacked content, it didn't even have any important significance. This movie didn't even need to exist, since Captain Marvel just says in Endgame that she was out protecting the other universes. So the whole point of "introducing Captain Marvel" was pointless, as it could have been done just like how Black Widow and Hawkeye were done in The Avengers; give her a cameo in the previous movies and then bring her directly to Endgame.

The film lacks something in its story or the character building, but, in fact, the other characters' first solo films felt differently. Even "Homecoming" or "Black Panther" though Peter Parker and T'Challa were fully introduced in "Civil War". Maybe because "Captain Marvel" doesn't understand what it should be: first solo film, prequel to "Endgame" or to the whole Avengers thing. But I can't say that "Captain Marvel" is a bad film or the first serious Marvel's fault. Yes, the story of Fury's eye, visual decisions and, in fact, untold Kree-Skruls war disappoint you. But Samuel L. Jackson's acting, good humour in some scenes and, hell, yes, Goose the cat herself save the day. Brie Larson should've starred in her own solo film but it didn't happen. I wish she could develop her character's personality in the future MCU films. Expand

The premise is fun, and it's refreshing to see Nick Fury in an overwhelming situation before he gets into the pilot seat. The conspiracy, without spoiling, is one I think makes for a lot of paranoid fun, as you're always wondering what's around the corner, and who is going to be secretly in on it. Unfortunately, it's seated by a protagonist whose character and performer are flat.

Captain Marvel's action sequences are weightless and flashy. The protagonist has unquantified god power from the beginning, nothing ever comes close to threatening her in any way, and this leads to the third act falling flat once the cat's out of the bag and all that's left is to punch the bad guy.

As a sucker for humans in silly face paint playing old-school aliens, I had a lot of fun with the second act, enough to say I enjoyed the film overall. If you're looking for a fun *action* film, however, you're not going to find it here. It's not bad because it includes a woman (obviously), it's mediocre because that woman has nothing to learn and nothing to overcome. Had they replaced Captain Marvel's role with Black Widow, Hawkeye, or any more grounded hero and kept the same premise (leaning into the Men in Black angle), the threat would have certainly felt more credible. As is, this is a movie you'll struggle to stay off your phone for.

"Space invasion, big car chase... truth be told, I was ready to hang it up. 'Till I met you today."

One year later - nobody's talking about this, expect for me right now. All that fuss and name calling over an average by the book superhero movie.

One of the blandest and most forgettable movies of last year, which I just remembered to login as watched.

Brie Larson, who has proven in the past to be a talented actress with amazing range, but is unfortunately the weakest link in the movie. I thought her performance was incredibly wooden and the least interesting part of the movie. Her line delivery felt really off and there wasn't anything there for me to care about her character. All backstory with very little depth. It might have just been the poor material she was given to work with.

I'm sorry, but not once did I believe this is the strongest character in the MCU. The issue is that the movie does a terrible job of actually showing us that she is powerful and important. They tell us rather than show us. Like OK, she shoots lasers, flies around and has some magical glow around her. Am I suppose to be impressed?

The story itself is really messy and unfocused. It's trying so hard to be an origin story while also setting up the next installment for future movies, but also having a Bourne element into the mix of connecting pieces to the past.

Also I can't believe they did Lee Pace dirty. Not just once, but twice now!

However, there are some things I liked in the movie that stopped it from being the worst thing ever. I love the tribute to Stan Lee on the Marvel Studios opening intro, which was such a loving touch to his legacy.

The de-aging on Samuel L. Jackson was fantastic and shows us how far technology has come. Although towards the end the effects started to look a bit wonky for some reason. Jackson himself was charismatic and a blast to watch. It was interesting to see a younger and goofy version of Nick Fury before he gets super serious.

I love Goose the Cat, just don't let her anywhere near your eyes.

The Skrulls were enjoyable "villains" and Ben Mendelsohn absolutely shines as one of the Skrulls.

And that's really it for positives.

Overall rating: "Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't." - Margaret Thatcher

Yes, I actually took a quote from Thatcher. I honestly should just delete my account right now.

And by controversial, what I mean is it made a bunch of nerdbro jackasses on the internet mad for some reason. I don’t know, some **** about Brie Larson hating white men or something, even though she literally has nothing to do with the writing or production of the movie? I don’t get it. Anyway, how is it? It’s fine! It’s like every single other middle-of-the-road Marvel solo movie ever made. It takes no risks. It’s safe, unchallenging popcorn entertainment. There are one or two things I thought this movie did really well, the de-ageing effects are fantastic, the ‘90s setting was fun and I kinda liked the Star Wars-ish vibe it had at times, but other than that this is just a serviceable, cookie-cutter, nothing-special-about-it superhero movie. How are the characters? They’re fine. The story? It’s fine. The action? It’s fine. The effects? They’re fine. The acting? It’s fine. The music? It’s fine. The comedy? It’s fine. The connections with the other movies? They’re fine. It’s fine. It’s not as good as Guardians of the Galaxy, but it’s not as bad as Ant-Man and The Wasp. It’s okay. There were some kinda bad moments, the writing and social commentary is extremely obvious and on-the-nose and there is an absolutely baffling music choice in one of the final battles that I feel is trying to be like an Edgar Wright movie or GotG but it just sticks out like a sore thumb, but that’s about it as far as actual issues I have with it. There just isn’t a lot about it that I think is especially good either. I know this movie means a lot to a lot of people and I think that’s great. I don’t really agree, Wonder Woman did it first and did it better, but I’m glad it did so well financially. Hopefully we’ll get bigger and better movies like this out of it. If you haven’t seen it already, check it out if you like Marvel movies, skip it if you’re like me and you don’t really care. Expand

Is it bad? No. Is it good? No. Is it an average, dull, generic, and extremely flawed superhero origin story? Yes!

Pros: The tributes to Stan Lee are beautiful and very touching, the movie wasn’t as much of a misandrist wokefest as I thought it was going to be, some of the action scenes are fun to watch, and Goose is funny and adorable. (I just really love cats. Sue me!)

Cons: Nick Fury is a complete joke in this movie, Carol Danvers is an emotionless character with no flaws and no personality, the movie takes place in the 90s but feels completely inauthentic and inconsistent with the time period, the sexism that Carol experiences is unrealistic and over-the-top, the movie retcons the entire MCU just to make its Mary Sue protagonist seem more important than she really is, and given the fact that Carol is written as an overpowered and flawless character, I never felt that there was any real conflict.

All in all, the movie was better than I feared it would be (I was expecting it to be complete garbage), but it was just so bland and boring. I don’t want to see a movie about a talking plank of wood; I want to see a movie with character development and stakes. I want to see a movie that takes place in the 90s (my childhood) that doesn’t feel like modern-day America with characters that tell you how “90s” the movie is every two minutes. I want to see a movie where the men aren’t emasculated and the women aren’t perfect saints who have no flaws and can do no wrong. And I want to see a Marvel movie that’s actually consistent with the rest of the MCU, not just shoehorned in for the sake of “Gurl Powar!”

And no, I am not a misogynist for saying all this. (Kind of hard for me to be a misogynist, considering the fact that I’m a woman).

I didn't see much of that going on, plus her character is overpowered from the very start. She's boring for the same reason superman is boring. Best performances are from Samuel Jackson and a CGI cat. I was fun to go back to the 1990's for a little while and the little jokes about loading from a modem, etc, were the best parts. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Well, I just plain don't like Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.

I was looking forwards to seeing Captain Marvel join the MCU. But Larson just does not pull it off, she has the same presence, energy and charisma as you might find in a pile of soggy carboard.

There are definitely some great moments with Nick Fury (I am not saying I want a Nick Fury solo movie, please, don't make that a thing) and I really enjoyed some of the moments with the Skrull played by Ben Mendelsohn, but on the whole I found the movie to be a bit lackluster. Certainly not the weakest movie in Marvels line-ups (Thor 2 and Captain America 1 have that privilege) but it just generally wasn't on par with what you expect from Marvel after they have had over a decade to perfect the formula.

Besides the super powers, all the best goalies in the galaxy and Iron Man are there. I must say that I do not really know what to tell so much movies are alike. I am sad to see that the risk taking is limited, but that the evolution of visual quality is very present. Holograms are a bit like black panther without the metallic and gray aspect. Beside the main character is not so captain but Fury and I must say that this actor plays the game to the end. This film can be positioned second in the Marvel environment. And in the last Thanos will take a power that will make him dance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Captain Marvel isn’t just a cookie cutter Marvel origin story. It’s focus on autopsy and self knowledge makes it a storyline that is tailor made for a different kind of hero and a different kind of audience. A lot of the villainy of the film has to do with control of female power through gaslighting and other forms of deception. Carol’s recognition of her own power and her conscious moral alignment with the downtrodden is central to the drama of this story.

Captain Marvel is a bit of a slog for the first half of the movie. Vers is amnesiac and a little bit neutered, and the conflict between the Kree and a race of watermelon/chameleon (or “watermeleon”) people manages to be both confusing and yet unoriginal. The story warms up in the second half–the fight scenes are played for laughs. It’s where Brie Larson’s understated swagger and impish braggadocio best fit her physicality. The flashback scene in which the shapeshifters spin through Vers’s memory like an amateur DJ is visually interesting way to tell backstory, because it’s not quite a passive learning experience. There seems like there’s room for an unreliable narrator and some manipulation of people and places and events, and the unsettling commentary overlaid and Vers’s unsettled expression ups the creep-factor.

There are some confusing aspects to the movie and its got a few disappointments. Spoilers.

Confusing: Why is she called Captain Marvel? Do we at any point have foreshadowing that what the one guy finds at the lab is actually why they’ve come? Because everyone looks pretty surprised except Carol, who seems like she’s figured it out. And then the wife’s explanation is equally unsuitable and vague.

Disappointing: the iconic scene from the trailer that you’re hoping is a super cut, Dunkirk-style, of three separate storylines, is, in fact, actually a single moment where three scenes we’ve never witnessed at any other part of the film are spliced together to make for a faux-meaningful moment of the resilience of women/humanity getting back up after they’ve been knocked down. What was so traumatizing on that day at the beach when she was four years old that it’s lodged in her memory at that life-or-death moment in the climax? Why is her strained relationship with her parents so generically bad? Why does no one shoot Carol in the head while she’s being restrained by the AI overlord of the Kree? Also, why does the Kree have an AI overlord and then also that other dude in the hood calling the shots? Where’s the flow chart for this organization?

I’m not entirely certain that this film would hold up to multiple viewings. It seems like the major twist and a lot of the gags are visual jokes that rely on an unexpected component of identity being shifted. That being said, I wouldn’t discourage anyone from finding out. I’ll see you on the other end of my extended break in Europe. Have a lovely March!

Captain Marvel has the makings of a great MCU movie. All of the expected elements are here. There's the humor, the action, the sentimentality, and the desire to provide non-stop entertainment. The problem? Its hero is kind of boring.

The story is decent, but at no point fleshes Carol Danvers out as anything more than a basic character archetype. It being the protagonist that tries way too hard to come off as tough and cool. We catch glimpses of earlier stages of her life that portray her as a girl that just wants to prove she can be as strong as the boys, but the snippets only last seconds so there's no real journey for her to go through in order achieve that goal. Danvers starts the movie off as a super powerful hero and ends it the same way. So there's no way for her to grow and endear herself to the audience.

Something is also a little off with Brie Larson's performance. She plays this character very, very woodenly. No real emotion seems to come out. Not even in the more energetic sequences. This stiffness is especially a problem every time they try to make Danvers funny. The jokes and one-liners fed to her simply fall flat on their faces. A shame because some of them could have been great had they not been delivered in such an awkward manner.

Larson shines brightly during the action sequences though. Making for a very believable butt kicker when blows start being traded. You can tell she put a lot of work in. Almost as much work as Marvel put into improving their visuals.

The MCU's CGI has been dodgy for a while now. Looking great in some movies and like total crap in others. Captain Marvel can most definitely be counted in the former camp. A good thing too as so much of it is made up of Guardians of the Galaxy style sci-fi scenery.

With its main hero falling short, it's up to the movie's supporting cast to carry the show. Luckily, Samuel Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn prove up to the task. Jackson is just as entertaining as ever and as much the star of the film as Larson herself. Fury stands beside Danvers every step of the way and he develops a few more layers as a result. Mendelsohn is straight up hilarious. I really want to see his character return at some point because he's a laugh riot. I was also caught off guard with how his arc turned out. It's a pretty big twist that changes the course of the movie. Lashana Lynch is good, but her role ends up being a bit of a disappointment as it solely revolves around being Carol's previously established friend from a time we only get brief flashbacks to. Jude Law isn't given much to do, but he's pretty great whenever he's onscreen.

Captain Marvel ultimately ranks among the mid to low-tier MCU flicks, and it's all because they never allowed Danvers to open up to the audience in the same way the other heroes have. It's still very well made movie with plenty of entertaining moments. It just falls short at what is arguably the biggest reason the MCU has been able to keep going for so long; turning previously established superheroes and their properties into something the masses can actually care about.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I give this 6/10 - it's a okay superhero movie with some strenghs and some weaknessess. What I loved the most was the world building around the Kree's and their mysterious highest leader. I also liked the story and it's different twists, even though they could have done a better job concealing the fact that the Kree are the bad guys. The female-empowerment stuff isn't holding the movie back as much as I thought, but the fighting scene with "I'm just a girl" in the background was one of the cringest moments I've had watching a movie for years. I'm all for adding odd music to scenes for comic purposes (like in Guardians of the Galaxy) but it really didn't work here. Carol is just starting to unpack her powers, and are about to meet her former tutor and his elite crew. There is some serious tension in that moment. And then the song comes on and ruins it all. Some wokeness can also be spotted in the fact that Captain Marvel is a woman, supported by two black characters, and her prime enemy is a white man who is holding her back and telling her to control her emotions. It's all about her realeasing her womanhood powers and breaking with the controlling patriarchy. This theme is not obvious or in your face though. Expand

The writing in this film is just so basic and boring that it was difficult to enjoy any of the poorly-written characters or uninteresting action sequences. I’m definitely fed up with these Marvel origin stories but I really expected something more exciting from the talent involved. With a superhero this powerful, the action sequences have no tension to them at all. With a superhero this bland, it’s becomes difficult for me to care at all.

- Marvel films usually have a number of storyline threads running but never has a film of the scale able to handle its political message so seamlessly. The message put forth by the directors weren’t subtle but they were forced and most importantly they didn’t get in the way of us seeing Captain Marvel just kick some ass.

- The humour for example was there, Ben Mendelson rose to this while I felt Bree Larson could not match the lofty expectations of Tom Holland or Robert Downey Jr.

- Larsons lack of comedic chops did lead on into further issues I had with the performance. Due to the magnitude of the environment at times, I felt Larson was just too small. She has undoubted charisma and I will never deny her talent but I felt she didn’t have the blockbuster presence that is required for a Marvel film, and will be an even bigger issue when she is forced to be part of the ensemble.

- Surprising most of all is the film is not necessarily written (Nicole Perlman, Meg LeFauve, Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck & Genevan Robertson-Dworet) just as an origin piece for Captain Marvel, it also touches on the birth of the Avenger initiative and even for Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg)

- Blockbuster Video is now a history piece

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If we compare ''Captain Marvel'' with others superheroes movies, we can conclude that ''Captain Marvel'' is the worst character story, all Marvel superheroes movies show the early life of superhero at the beginning, and then how he/she obtains the superpower as a forward story, but ''Captain Marvel'' started backwardly, at the beginning she already has a superpower, but she doesn't remember anything about how she got it, until the end when she finds out how she obtained it. I think the writers made a different a style of superhero movie to surprise the audience with some twist in the story, but they failed because it was a bad twist and no one surprised or impressed, they could make a wonderful, emotional and enjoyable movie if they just make it forward and clear (showing her early life, not as a flashback, until she becomes a "Captain Marvel'').

I read a lot of negative reviews, and I think most audiences hated ''Captain Marvel'' due to many factors:
1- Less action than other Marvel movies.
2- Released after the masterpiece ''Avengers: infinite war'', so all marvel audience were expecting same or more from ''Captain Marvel.''
3- Her power wasn't special, it's almost like '''Superman.''
4- Lack of humor.
5- Not following straight forward story as same as other superhero movies.

Finally, ''Captain Marvel' is just a TV movie, not good and not bad, if you are one of marvel audience you will not like it, but if you just want to watch a superhero movie maybe you will enjoy a little.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into this movie unbiased. However, I did hear good and bad reviews from many sources. I feel that this movie is well below the standard for Marvel movies, but then again we were subjected to X-Men. All in all this was a mediocre movie that had a lot of predictable situations. There was pretty much one shock moment, but it wasn't even that significant. It wasn't built upon and the shock was delivered in such a way that you didn't really care. This movie is a one-time watch and I would recommend this movie if you are bored, or if you are on an airplane. Otherwise, there isn't a great reason to watch this movie. Lastly, how this movie was shoehorned into Endgame was offensive. Had this movie delivered on all fronts, then I would be all for it, but it did not.

The beginning was awfully slow. Carol just crash lands into a blockbuster, but without hesitation immediately hijacks a telephone to communicate to her very distant team. Doesn't make any sense if you think about it. If she needed to communicate locally (on Earth) then that is one thing, but she was communicating through the vastness of space. This is not on the character Carol, this is specifically on the director of this film. In combination to this the chase felt empty, like it was fit in just as a filler, but then the slight twist of the Skrull; which again kind of was just there. So they could have delivered a more solid intro to the Skrull and what the are capable of.

Next would be the sub-par humor. Although, some parts were okay, but for the most part it felt like lines were added at the last moment - "oh, let's add X here because it sounds good" which it was meh at best.

The cat and Nick Fury was more annoying, overplayed, and forced. It became obnoxious and I really wanted to skip over those parts. There were a couple shots were it was incredibly extended and cringy. I hate to use the term "cringe" but it fits like a glove in this situation. The addition to this cat thing, omg how Nick Fury lost his eye is beyond disappointing and utterly stupid - can't say anymore because I will become frustrated.

One key theme about this entire movie is Carol does not experience failure at all. She has small struggles, but nothing similar to a good story. In fact, these minor struggles she goes through aren't relatable. Towards the end she is literally the female version of Superman, without the failures and significant struggles. I also noticed that the music was GOD AWFUL. The terrible music caused more harm to a couple fight scenes than did good. It completely put me off. It was definitely pre-sec elected for this film because it just did not fit at all, for the movie and especially for the moment.

The antagonist(s) in this movie. What? Who? Yeah, they weren't even powerful or nearly gave Carol a run for her money. Completely underwhelming. There were two points in the film I thought a decent fight was going to happen, but nope. Yon-Rogg challenged her and she took the coward way out. Then Ronan appeared, then he disappeared. Like.. come on!

Mar Vel in the 80's was male. Why all of a sudden is Mar Vel a woman? I dunno. I minor thing, but please stick to the story. The last negative part is Brie Larson. I just did not feel it. It was like a bread stick attempting to dance. She brought no charisma or excitement into the role. Had it been Gal Gadot, this movie would have been much much different.

There is a lot of negativity here, but the good was the graphics. They were outstanding and how Carol looked in full power mode was pretty sick. Also, the teal color to the weapons were awesome too.

I truly do wish I could add to the positive paragraph above, but there really isn't much else I can add. :(

To wrap up, I will be generous here and give this movie a 4/10, but I really want to lean towards a 3/10. Watch it if you are bored, but skip out on the popcorn.

Not Marvels best work just like Black Panther, it was watchable but only once. I didn't much care for some of the red conning basically all things that had to do with Fury.
While the movie was not god awful it felt Meh, the CGI was vomit inducing at few points feels like they gave that job to the e-team, the acting was so stiff at points that I thought the actors were planks of wood. Especially Brie after she unleashed her powers she just felt like a tabula rasa, and not to mention she was both powerful but also weak pretty much the same as in Avengers Endgame. I think the writers have no idea how to write her character and her powers.
The feminists points were annoying but luckily there weren't too many but every time there was it wasn't well executed like in Wonder Woman, it was forced and I doubt anyone truly related to her because of that. Reason mostly being that the arrogance of Capt Marvel was off the charts similar to Tony Stark, but unlike Tony she never had as powerful of a scene of the "Oh my God, what have I done" she didn't feel really regretful of killing the Skrulls. She had about 10 second scene where she had the Hollywood "sexy cry" moment but then she just thought okay, time to kill some Kree next without any mercy or remorse. Could have this ever been done as a good movie? Probably not, because even in the comic world Capt Marvel isn't a much liked character due to her tendency to jump into conclusions and getting characters killed and acting like she is the boss so to say.
In the end, Meh movie wouldn't watch it again and honestly there is no reason for anyone to watch this since it doesn't add anything to Endgame.

But marvel films are excellent so this is a real disappointment and a shock. It's technically well made with good acting (mostly), excellent cgi (except the cat) , fun music and decent direction and the de-aging process is incredible....but the writing ...well it's trash. The script is ok for a popcorn summer film but the story is just garbage. Really poor...stupid and offensive to all that came before. I'd say it wasn't a marvel film at all...more a mar vel movie (in joke ...one of the few). I don't know what happened if I guessed I'd say it was rushed. It feels and looks rushed. If I'm being honest as a huge fan of shield it's like the best shield episode ever. It looks and feels like an extended shield episode. Not a bad thing but why bother being a film. Also there is some pc nonsense going on but nothing too offensive. I don't know the comics or care and I don't care about having to see or read additional info to understand the film ...that's just lazy film making. There isn't too much of that but enough to add to the overall poor quality of the movie. The post credits junk is also...well just nothing special. All of it serves better films.

Brie Larson. Yes she is named after a cheese but she is competent as Cpt Marvel. I like her but I felt she was out of place here. She never felt truly anything beyond lost and confused. Wonder Woman and cat Woman have been way more bad ass. So is it worth your time? No its not but that's the problem ....You have to watch this dumb lazy unoriginal creatively dearth film to move on to the next and final one. That wasn't a problem when they were all awesome and even thor managed to improve. But it is a problem when the film is so average and boring and just meh. Watch it once and forget about it. This is no Avengers or Antman or Planet hulk or Cpt America or Ironman...just not in the same league though it is the same universe.

I didn't hate the film but it's the worst type of film....a film which does nothing new and adds nothing to your life. A waste of potential, talent, time and money. Overall A for Average 5/10.

However, it is not as bad as some people say just because they don't like the actress who plays Captain Marvel. CGI effects were very good and some actions were enjoyable. The climax was not designed climactic enough so I was a bit bored of the main character. The side characters had better humor and they were fun. Expand

A role meant to be dead and lifeless. Nick Fury had alright moments but I think that this movie in total was just boring and not fun at all. Marvel set a bar and they just didn't reach it with this one mediocre film. Expand

Carol Danvers is an awful character. This is a third wave feminist movie. I wish Hollywood would just stop shoving stupid political messages and stupid social justice in movies, especially comic book movies. Captain Marvel was more like Captain Mary Sue in this movie. I can’t believe that she is supposed to be the most powerful character in the MCU, that is just **** Kevin Feige wants us to believe that she is the only one who can destroy and stop Thanos when it should really be a team effort for the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy to to defeat the mad titan. All that build-up since Iron Man back in 2008 in Phase 1 to Avengers: Endgame in 2019 in Phase 3 was all for nothing. This is a bad PC agenda driven Marvel movie pandered to SJWs, feminists, and post-millennials. This movie is trash. It is a dumpster fire. Captain Marvel made me not excited for Avengers: Endgame. It killed my hype for Avengers: Endgame. Expand

Let alone tons of absurd and cringe-worthy stuff: paying homage to the '90s by showing slow loading processes and not-working web pages, a pandering to diversity through the movie's so-called messages in a most heavy-handed, and superficial way, outdated CGI, some of the corniest and cheesiest lines, etc.

As much as I love this franchise, the humor in MCU usually doesn't work for me as it does for many people. But I can't remember not chuckling even once during every one of these movies. In Captain Marvel, though, I swear that I didn't even smile for one time!

Also, I hate to say it, but Brie Larson is really stone-faced here. I just want to let you know that her Oscar-winning performance in Room is one of my all-time favorite performances by an actress!

What I liked:
- The de-aged Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is incredibly impressive.
- Goose the cat is just a scene-stealer.
- I didn't expect the plot-twist, to be honest. (I wasn't invested in the story in even the slightest degree, though).
- The first act is stupidly chaotic and fast-paced that didn't bore me for a second. So that's a plus... I guess!
- The second act is interesting at some points, and it's when the story begins to find its footing.
- It's not a boring movie overall. In fact, it's quite enjoyable, except for the absurdly overlong third act that almost made me want to skip and fast forward till I get to the very end.

Overall, Captain Marvel is a soulless and bland sci-fi/action movie, and an undeniably second-tier superhero flick that doesn't deserve to be among most of the installments in an otherwise Marvel franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay,

Honestly considering all the press debacles Brie Larson was causing I wasn't going to watch this movie. However my friend invited me and I misunderstood him (Thought we we're going to see Shazam otherwise known as Captain Marvel in the DC universe). So when I arrived I didn't have much in expectations.

So the movie itself isn't a bad film, it's also not a great film. The movie itself probably should've been the lead in movie for the next phase. Like a flashback film after Endgame where Captain Marvel explains her ties to Earth etc. But this film definitely didn't need to be force fed right before endgame.

So let's talk specifics:
1. Characters - Honestly the main character is written in a god awful manner. It's like watching Kristen Stewart play Bella Swan from Twilight because the character is a bland terrible character. Kristen Stewart got a lot of flack for this only to find out later she has a much wider range of expressive emotions. It all comes down to how the character is written. The rest of the cast isn't particularly stunning either. While Samuel L. Jackson did a decent job as Fury his entire attitude seemed off considering the Fury we know. I know this is a prequel but there should have shown more character development for him to become who we know currently. The other problem is the main character isn't really given any challenges to overcome and direct main enemy to beat (see Iron man 1's Obadiah Stane and Iron Man 2's Whiplash)

2. Plot - A confused mess with a stupid twist you start seeing clearly from about the first quarter of the movie. Given the history of the Skrull & Kree in the comics the way they portrayed the factions is honestly rife with current real world political culture instead of established Marvel lore. There was more they could've done with back story but they chose not to the result is a ultimately unmotivated plot.

3. Nostalgia - Since the movie takes place in the 90's it's riddled with nostalgia as a selling point. Most of this was hamfisted in, especially where the soundtrack is concerned. In earlier reviews I heard them discussing certain music choices including one big one at the end of the movie. Honestly after watching it I understand where they're coming from. Some of the music, including the one at the end simply don't fit with the overall sequences resulting in viewer whiplash.

Other issues:

We have to discuss the main actress Brie Larson and her media debacles leading up the Captain Marvel. Her actions are damaging the Disney/Marvel brand by pushing debateable and often refutable "social justice" ideas and beliefs. When she states she doesn't want white men to see the movie she's talking about a gigantic swath of the fan/customer base. That's particularly troubling for any industry but it's worse in film making. Because the more an Actor/Actress shows of their real self the harder it is to separate them from the character(s) they portray on screen. This is something Kevin Spacey (as terrible choices as he's made) was correct at by keeping his private beliefs and thoughts to himself. This way when you thought of Kevin Spacey you thought to the roles he played (Kaiser Soze, 7 etc) versus Kevin Spacey the person.

*Spoilers*

Marvel plot issues. In the lead up to Captain Marvel they pushed her as being the "strongest" Avenger. However her power has the same source as Scarlet Witch originating from a infinity stone. I'm not sure on the power hierarchy among the stones but this seems just silly from both a marketing and plot/story continuity standpoint. The character herself is shown to not have any real weaknesses during the film. Which is problematic when you're trying to make a relatable character. The one thing (her emotions) which is portrayed as a weakness at the start of the film is surprise, a hidden source of strength all along! It makes her unimaginative and slowly turns her into a Mary Sue as she never really fails at anything she does unlike the rest of the characters.

Final:

Is this movie seeing? Honestly you don't need to. It's not integral to the story at all. Again it's not a bad movie, it's just unimaginative and unnecessary to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the long run. Given this outing and depending on how Endgame plays out the idea that Captain Marvel will replace Captain America & Ironman as the leads for the MCU is debatable and currently unlikely.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definition of painfully average movie. If this is the answer to Wonder Woman, you lost. Brie Larson is no character, no emotions and all the "shtick" with her controlling emotions is completely lost in the movie. If protagonist has no weaknesses, she is boring. She has no character arch whatsoever and the only thing she does from start till end is "remember things" and help the Scrolls that should have been done by Mar Vel anyway. Movie is not boring, because everything else BUT the main character is great. I liked the side characters, especially Fury. But that's it. The more characters you introduce in past, the more plot holes you open. Fury losing eye was strangely done and all the feminism nods were completely unnecessary. Show good female hero people can relate. dont tell that we have to relate .be-ca-use she is a woman hero. Post credit scene 1 was good, 2 was ok. But best part of this movie were definity references and Stan Lee. Also, what is wrong with marketing this movie, Brie Larson saying no interviews with white people and promoting divisive politics? I guess this is why negative reviews are so many here. Expand

Whilst Captain Marvel is a technically proficient super hero blockbuster, it lacks the extra 'umph' and emotion gut punch usually associated with seeing the titular marvel character do their super hero thing in helping the various characters deliver justice.... To use a food analogy, it's like salt free ketchup..... diet coke...quorn meat...a microwave meal... while it initially seems to have some substance, it ultimately lacks that authentic flavour....

It fails to add anything to the MCU and given the massive amount of hype leading up to this film, the word that best describes it is disappointing. Brie Larson fails to give an enticing performance (albeit the writing does her few favors) and the character of Carol Danvers is unrelatable. Danvers experiences no real conflict or challenge throughout the film. She is just as much, if not more, of a "Mary Sue" as Rey is in the Star Wars Sequel trilogy. Furthermore this film feels like it should have been the second or third film in the Captain Marvel storyline, yet Marvel chooses to rush it out in time for Infinity War. Not to mention that Marvel completely wastes the Secret Invasion storyline.

The movie is not without some good points (however sparse). Jackson and Mendelsohn's performances are noteworthy, though not revolutionary. The buddy cop dynamic is somewhat satisfying, yet still disappointing.

In addition, this movie has no subtlety. Guardians of the Galaxy's 70s soundtrack was explained and made sense in the storyline. This film just throws in 90s songs to remind you that the film takes place in 1995. Furthermore, while this film should not be directly compared to Wonder Woman, comparisons will obviously be drawn since they are the first films in their respective franchises to star women. While Patty Jenkins had Wonder Woman tackle gender stereotypes and injustices in subtle, clever ways, Captain Marvel does it too loudly in ways that feel shoehorned in.

Overall, Captain Marvel has some exciting plot pieces, but its protagonist lacks any form of emotion or relatability. Overall, for the first time, I have my doubts about the future of the MCU after endgame if Captain Marvel is still to become a leader in the franchise.

It's not a terrible movie, nor a great movie, it's just a harmless, played-it-safe movie even for a superhero movie.
I had fun watching it a the theater, but that's it.
The main problems with this movie are the poor directing, writing and character development, this felt more like a sequel rather than a Captain Marvel origin story, by that I mean that I learned almost nothing about the character. The directors couldn't sell me the idea that Captain Marvel is the strongest character in the MCU and the one who could beat Thanos as her powers and abilities as shown in this movie are a little generic, bland and boring. The villain is also boring and has no motivation, he's not intimidating or anything, it felt like watching Malekith from Thor 2 or Steppenwolf from Justice League.
As with any movie review I'm gonna highlight the good and bad:

The Good:
-It's a fun superhero movie overall. The scenes with Carol Danvers and Nick Fury are really good and I think the best of the movie.
-There's little to no "Hey look! We have a strong female character that will be an inspiration for all women in the world! We're so progressive!" moments (I don't know the word to sum up that, haha, sorry) as I thought there would be.

The Bad:
-The directing and writing.
-Lack of character development.
-The action scenes were lame. Because probably this directors don't know how to shoot a good action scene. All action scenes are shaky, with tons of cuts and you can barely see what's going on. If the action in a superhero movie is not good, you're doing something wrong.
-Some CGI looked bad, not Black Panther levels of bad but still bad and fake-looking. The Skrulls had a very silly terrible-looking mask.
-Some explanations that fans of the MCU might be trying to seek, like Nick Fury's eye, might be very disappointing.
-Some editing. Like the first 20 minutes of the movie are very confusing because of the bad editing choices.

Metacritic is removing newlines for some reason. The MCU now has a Goku. There is a long running joke in Dragonball Z abridged where when a good guy is losing a fight, the villain would mock them by saying "just wait for Goku." By the end of the movie, Captain Marvel is so powerful that absolutely nothing is a threat. Not the main villain, not the orbital bombardment fleet, and not the hundreds of soldiers and warfighters sent against her. The reason she wasn't present in the other movies is explained, but IMO it is a cop-out. When Captain Marvel inevitably wipes the floor with Thanos in end game, the Dragonball Z knockoff saga that is now the MCU will be complete, last minute Goku/Superman syndrome and all. But that's the MCU. How does the movie stand on it's own? My answer: solid 6.5/10. With Captain Marvel being so powerful, the story hook is focused mainly on Captain Marvel's struggle with fabricated memories, as well as a war where the sides don't seem so clear cut. The set up is perfect for a story about an OP character, and the general story beats worked out great. The Effects and choreography were par for the course for MCU movies (good), and the acting was Mostly done well. In terms of the movie itself, I had several issues. The pacing felt off in many of the scenes, with a few weird glaring continuity errors right at the start of the movie. Sometimes the scenes played kind of slow, other times they transitioned before the previous scene could sink in. The acting from the lead, Brie Larson, felt pretty stiff. This seemed to be as much the director and writers' fault as it was the actor though. Captain Marvel is often smug throughout the movie, though she randomly goes from super confident and smiley to super serious throughout both fights and tense moments. I think Disney wanted a hero that is both stoic, and funny, and is in general better than everyone else. The result feels like a fan-fiction insert. As for the acting itself, there was a scene that perfectly exemplified my issues: Maria Rambeau talks with Captain Marvel to fill in some of the holes in Marvel's memory. This is a very emotional scene for both characters and in Rambeau and it clearly shows. However, Captain Marvel (who seemed like she should be just as emotional at the things being revealed to her) twitches a little bit must mostly keeps the same stone face. As for the identity politics: they were present, bot nowhere near the level we see in the recent comics. Expand

The film was somewhat predictable though the twist at the end just seemed quite out of character from what you see.
Yes this film is a bit of a feminist film, which is a shame as I don't see why it can't just be a superhero film where the hero is a woman?

There wasn't much in the way of progression in the character as she just gets her superpowers and now she is the most powerful one there... hardly any struggle for it etc... oh I don't know.. They are the best part of this movie as they definitely give great performances. I'm also a sucker for 90s nostalgia being a 90s kid. The action and the lead, however, are pretty lifeless and don't have any of the excitement usually found in MCU movies, especially coming off the clever fight scenes in both Infinity War and Ant-Man & The Wasp and great charm in performances given by most actors in the MCU. However, I do feel given better writing, Larson can give Captain Marvel the gusto needed to make her a good character. The plot also feels very "phase 1" and I strongly disliked some of the retconning done in this film. I see promise for the character in the future and there were some promising moments in this film, but this film was underwhelming and joins Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk as some of the MCU's worst. The formula is still in place but definitely the charm is already beginning to run out.

Captain Marvel doesn't manage to be the monumental film that it thinks it is, especially because it finally has a female lead character and yet despite the scale of the narrative, it never compensates the viewer like it should.

It's true that has more negative points than positive ones but nothing that affects its performance in a significant way.

Significant annotations:

Pros
- A powerful female character that will not be lost among the great male names like Thor, Captain America and Iron Man
- Marvel points to space which is the best place they can go if they want to keep their franchise alive.
-
Cons
- You cannot help feeling this story like a forced introduction to have the character ready for Endgame.
- What they did with the Skrulls has no name. At the same level of what they did with The Mandarin.
- Marvel wasted Ronan again.
- There's no real villain or conflict.

Good : The deaging effect on Samuel L. Jackson is awesome. He resembled Zeus from Die Hard with a Vengeance, a totally uncanny resemblance. His natural charisma and charm prove to be a saving grace of the movie. Also, he was given a much more screen time, which kept me interested for a longer time. It ain't as bad as the fake reviews say it is, and is completely watchable from the beginning to the end. Apart from this, Ben Mendelsohn does a very good job as well.
.
Mixed : (Spoilers) Kree are the villains, Skrulls are the good guys and are initially shown to be the exact opposite. This has been taken by many viewers to be a positive, but I just have happened to rewatch Deadpool 2 and some other films with similar tropes quite recently. So, it didn't click with me well. Also, Ronan was a Kree in GotG 1, so I roughly predicted the twist, and I was right. On the whole, I appreciate the ideas behind the film, but I did not like the writing, directing and overall execution of those ideas. As a result, I found this movie to be very dull. .
.
Bad : I am really sad to say this but Brie Larson is probably the worst casting choice in the MCU, after Don Cheadle for War Machine. It feels like Carol was the same person before and after the crucial events shown in the movie. Her performance is completely flat. Writers and directors are to be blamed too, but it doesn't feel like she was totally into the role at the first place. Apart from this, there is a little explanation why she could absorb all the powers of the tesseract and not die, and how does all that absorption make her super invicible. It felt as if they concentrated more on her powers than story. She often feels like an exaggerated and unlikable version of Superman. We get to know what Kree is up to, but it doesn't clearly explain their motives. The writing and directing is quite poor, and it is apparent from the fact that we end up not caring much about the new characters. The action scenes are below average at best. Many of the scenes are in the dark, so I couldn't see what was going on. Other times, there were frequent cuts. There are dumb song choices for a fight scene, which make it look totally whacky. And, Fury lost his eye because a f**king alien cat scratched his eye? What the f**k is that, seriously? Also, in the first Avengers film, Natasha says that she wasn't trained for aliens and creatures like that, but Fury should've let her train for that. It means either Fury is a d**k, or the writers didn't see the first Avengers film at all. I will stick with the second one. I don't remember it clearly, but I think Fury said that "Avengers initiative" was because of Peggy Carter or so. If I am wrong, then please don't mind. But if I am not, what was the point of the final moments of this film? .
.
Conclusion : For casual fans, it's okay for a one time watch. But for MCU fans, it will be underwhelming and disappointing. It feels like a mess of a film with great potential. .

It's not a bad movie but it could have been so much better than it actually is.

- Good movie. Brie Larson is the perfect choice for the role. The cast is awesome, especially the chemistry between Carol and Fury. Great performance of Jude Law. The story is interesting and the plot twist is a good move by the directors.- Good movie. Brie Larson is the perfect choice for the role. The cast is awesome, especially the chemistry between Carol and Fury. Great performance of Jude Law. The story is interesting and the plot twist is a good move by the directors. Good 90's reference and clever humor (sometimes)
- The action scenes -for the most powerful character of the universe- are insufficient. The fight scenes are bad (except the Talos-Fury fight) and there is no proper final fight. The loss of Fury's eye is disappointing and some jokes are annoying and seems forced

It's not a great CBM but it's good, fun, enjoyable and get us ready for Endgame
