It seemed that the filmmakers were aiming for more than just another action flick; but the elements needed to attain such a level (particularly writing), did not help in reaching it.

Her acting is completely flat and she looks bad. Her orange face, orange hair, hairstyle, and just about everything about the character is so wrong. And frankly her looks isn't what it used to be as the sexiest woman in the world. She looked fine in Iron Man 2 and okay in Avengers but this appearance was just awful. Expand

I am very critical, and there were only three or four times that some truly impossible stuff happened, and I won't be too specific since I don't want to spoil anything. I will say that mostly it was due to some damage that regular humans took that didn't really damage them and could have killed them and at the least broke them. Other than this, I will say that Cap blocks bullets with his shield a lot and it just got ridiculous at one point. Expand

Is it a perfect movie? No, of course not. Does it deserve a 3.8 or a 5? Definitely not. Besides a few tropes and plot devices that raised an eyebrow slightly (but come on, it's a bloody super hero film) it's a very enjoyable show that I would happily watch again.

Marvel are putting together a really consistent movie universe and bringing it together really nicely. I am happy to see it and look forward to their next film.

The political and moral ideals explored here kept me extremely interested throughout. The themes explored here make you think about whose side you really want to take, and while Marvel pushes Captain America's right wing "uncompromised freedom" angle, the Hydra's "freedom in order" was very interesting. I hated the first Captain America movie, but the way this one was put together made this possibly the best super hero movie I've ever seen other than The Dark Knight Rises. The combination of the themes I mentioned above and the excellent action sequences made it a movie that included everything I love about movies. Robert Redford and Samuel L. Jackson deliver the standout performances here and some of their exchanges are just some of the best acting I've ever seen. I was also surprised by Chris Evans who I felt was the weakest link in the first movie. He plays this character, that I'm not exactly fond of, really well. The film also has one of the greatest villains in an action movie. The Winter Soldier is smart. He is an equal to the films protagonist and that's what made him so excellent. See this movie. If you have any interest in film, Marvel, politics, morality, or Captain America, this is a must see film. Expand

For me, the only issues I had was some action scenes where it was just stupid. What I mean is, it is that classic hundred guys shooting at one person and that person never gets hit or just a minor wound. There was many cliche moments. Thankfully the corn ball issues that can happen in super hero movies was kept down, not totally gone, but at okay levels.

The plot was good and the acting was in general good. The did use shaky cam at times during action scenes. If you really hate that, you may want to skip this movie. They do not do it a ton, but enough to annoy people who hate that.

As you would expect, the special effects were solid overall. Not to often did it had a video game feel.

If you are expecting an original story with amazing acting, this is not for you. If you are looking for a popcorn flick for a fun time, this is a good choice. I do think Marvel is going to have to find ways to make the movies a little harder to predict if they do not want people to get burned out on them.

The writing of this film finds a perfect balance between paying homage to the characters' history and adapting to a modern day setting and audience. The action sequences are immensely entertaining since we get to see Cap and Widow show off their abilities without being eclipsed by massive green death on legs or a lightning summoning flying Viking. Falcon is also a welcome addition who I would like to see in the next Avengers.
Performance wise I can't fault it either. There's not a lot to say here since we've seen most of the cast in the previous films so we know they can handle their roles already so the only one that needs to be called to is Anthony Mackie who holds his own very well in amongst cast members who have had time to hone their roles.
One of the things that raises it above Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 is that it is the first post-Avengers film to actually acknowledge the other Avengers (I'm not counting that tiny 20 second after thought at the end of Iron Man 3 with Mark Ruffalo in it). With Black Widow sharing the screen with Captain America, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner both get honourable mentions just so we know they still actually exist. Although if they were going to talk about the other Avengers you'd think they might mention the massive battle for the universe that Thor was in but it's a start at least.
So ayway, this is one of the strongest MCU films and a solid continuation of the Avengers story arc.

When Marvel started making movies, with the exception of Batman, I hated superheroes, I hated everything about them. I had written them off as the lowest, cheapest form of science fiction, and the first few Marvel films did little to prove me wrong, but then they started getting better, and arguably the best films in the franchise, or at least my favorites have been the Captain America films. Chris Evans is just terrific, he has this innocent naiveté about him surrounded in a childlike wonderment, but when the time comes, he can still kick some ass and even crack a joke, Evans just fits the role like a glove. There's not much point summarizing the story, because if you're not into the whole Marvel scene, you're probably not going to understand or see this film anyway, and that's a shame, because from a visual stand point alone, The Winter Soldier rivals anything Marvel has put out to date. On that note, the one draw back to this film is there is a lot of Avenger story line involved. This is supposed to be a stand alone film, fans of the series loved it and rightfully so, but what about the people who just like the character and aren't into the whole genre? All the other Avenger/Shield/Hydra stuff and other characters from other series could make the story for them more than somewhat confusing. In watching this film, you almost have to have some kind of background knowledge of the characters involvement in other films in order to be in the know and that doesn't sit right with people, particularly kids, who just want to see Captain America. For the fans, however it doesn't get much better than this, it's slightly longer and rougher around the edges than The First Avenger, but it is still a great film, and a must see for anyone is trying to keep with the Marvel franchise. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Captain America is overall a cool superhero. His powers of super strength are just epic. So that is why I felt the first film was kind of boring. I mean we had a guy who he hated and was a Nazi and so he can easily kill him if he wanted to. While that proved to be difficult and he may have not killed him he still sure showed him who's boss. However, in this film the Cap must face his best friend Bucky aka The Winter Solider. This is hard for him and we see that in the end when he says he will not fight Bucky. So we get to see an emotional side of the film. Then of course the action and special effects are great and Scarlet Johannson is very good as Black Widow. In the end this movie is amazing filled with great acting and of course the emotional side of the film concerning Bucky and all the sadness that fills Cap when he sees Buck die in the first film and then finds out he is still alive but is bad. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cap is back, far more comfortable with his super-soldier physique, his top-secret SHIELD missions, and the modern world around him. The Avengers honestly made Captain America look like a bench-warmer compared to the abilities of Hulk, Iron Man and Thor. This film emphasizes Cap's abilities and what he is truly capable of, and the best word to describe it: Redemption. I have always been far more a fan of super heroes I can connect to rather than how bad-ass they are. I love Iron Man, but he's such a screw-around playboy that I really cannot tell when his emotions are at stake and when he takes things seriously. I mean right after his near-death incident in Avengers, he suggested they go to a well-reviewed local diner. Don't get me wrong, they nailed Tony Stark's character and who he is, but who he is just is not completely similar to who I am. (I mean I was awarded class clown, but I have my morals). Steve Rogers has the most heart out of any avenger. He has a reason he wants to save people: "I don't like bullies." This installment in the MCU holds a storyline I have fallen in love with. It makes it seem like Captain America is a true American hero via his exhibit at the Smithsonian, and one cannot help but feel his pain when he visits the now-aged Peggy. Great scene, great script, great acting. Captain America: The Winter Soldier KNOWS what it is about as well, unlike following Marvel Blockbuster "The Amazing Spider-Man 2". Captain America believes in freedom. He is the true definition of a hero, a savior, a leader, an avenger. Aside from the main plot of Hydra's diabolical schemes, the film's has such strong supporting characters. Scarlett Johanson is almost as comfortable as Black Widow as Downey Jr. is with Stark. She owns the role. Newcomer Falcon is likeable from the first minute of the film, and dear lord his stunts are cool. Samuel L. returns as director Fury with one of the best scenes in the film, had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, leading into the film's definitive villain, The Winter Soldier. Sorry to keep using examples from other films, but a simple comparison: Electro holds no meaning to Spider-Man, it would not matter if he were wiped off the face of the Earth, but when the hero has a personal and emotional connection to whom he is now threatened by, it simply makes for a better story and character chemistry. The Winter Soldier is another Bad-Ass to add to Marvel's collection of them. Another decent performance from Robert Redford is in the film as well, obviously not his best acting but he was not given many opportunities. No point in going into detail about his character, it is not a deal-breaker for this movie. The only real negative thing I can say is I got lost momentarily in the middle for a bit, a couple slow but very necessary scenes. Great follow up for Cap, I cannot wait for The Fallen Son. Expand

It's a smart film that's exceptional before you take in it's gestalt. Writing - great, directing and cinematography - perfect, but it's cast is arguably the finest component of the Film. Chris Evans maintains his great character from The First Avenger, but now has to cope with a radically different world than the one he came from. Scarlett Johanssen finally gets enough screen-time to show that she can carry anything stand-alone Black Widow. Anthony Mackie finally gets a role where director's shadow does cover up his exceptional acting talent. Sam Jackson actually gets some moments to not just be Sam Jackson, but the genre-savvy character he implied to be since Iron Man 2. Sebastian Stan deserves praise for how well his screen presence carries given how much of it versus how little dialogue he actually has. Finally Robert Redford does well as Alexander Pierce, a character loaded with mystery who's a rabbit-hole you can't help but to look down. And warning; before you see any other new releases from Marvel Studios (save for Guardians of the Galaxy), see this first. This film also maintains the shift to darker tones that we've also seen in the other Phase II films released (Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World). Christopher Markus and Stephen Mcfeely were being real about a political thriller in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Expand

I really hated the first Capta film, I felt is was more Capta in Limbo than Capta in America.
well to be honest it sent me to sleep. the story of some puppet idiot who wants to go off and take orders from a corrupt imperialist government, OK the USA were the heroes in WW2 but I generally get the stink of false heroism when I hear about the USA today so didn't really like the story about the super soldier. the first film sent me to sleep, SO I had no interest in this film initially, until my friend convinced me to watch it.

I was quite surprised as right from the start the film was suggesting Capta's disagreement with the way the USA was going. He seemed to be at odds with what America has become and so I really started to take an interest. As the film continued I was really impressed at the themes they were exploring and grew to really like Capta and his stance. I started to understand that Capta embodies the true American spirit ; the idea of America that I admired from an early age. The character were quite interesting and although some of them were pretty predictable, there were a couple of times in this film where I was truly surprised. The movement of Capta and the other characters was really impressive, nothing at all like a Michael Bay film where you can't follow the action at all. this was all very clean movement and was very well choreographed. the action sequences were quite exciting and not dumbed down IMO. All in all, this movie turned me into a fan of Capta and now I want to read his comic book about the 'Civil War'.

Lots of action, lots of character focus. Yet, no real bad guy (not really.) I was kind of disappointed that the title character is barely in the movie. Granted the backstory and the events of the movie revolves around him heavily, yet he's not really there. And he was so cool!

Black Widow's character really is nowhere near as cool as she was in the Avenger movie. She feels really mellow by comparison.

Overall:
While I had expected allot more from this movie, it still was decent and allot of fun to watch. I just wish they had done more with it.

Entertaining, but missed the opportunity to be a great movie by not diving deeper into the freedom vs. security debate the movie promoted. Marvel keeps missing the mark with the refusal to make a darker superhero film.

WW2 always works. but this movie was flat. i can't tell the difference between this and gi joe or transformers. they all play the same. it needs more dialogue and foundation. When the action starts I don't care about the characters and when it finishes I still don"t care. sure you root for the good guys but there is no mythos. nazis have a similar mythos to the evil empire in star wars. a polarizing force which separates good and bad. this movie falls short. i'll keep watching but just not as enjoyable as ironman. capt is played so one dimensional. This time the story set in the modern world only if you are not taking 'The Avengers' in the account. The cast was expanded, I mean the sidekicks were introduced. Looked the strength of the 'good' has doubled, but the villain was also equally good. The first praising words goes the directors for handling it well and hope they are going to repeat the same magic for the next movie as well.

This story commence just after 'The Avengers'. Captain America and Black Widow are sent to free hostages and collect some data. Soon after the SHEILD director Fury is targeted by an assassin called Winter Soldier. After this incident the weight leans on Captain America, he becomes the prime suspect. With the help of Black Widow and a new wingman called Falcon, he seeks the truth. Unexpectedly the story strikes with a twist and exposes the man behind it. Once everything revealed the tension arise between good and bad before it ends with a convincing solution.

‘‘Before we get started,
does anyone want to get out?’’

The escape scene of Samuel L. Jackson was awesome and I wanted it a little longer. The new addition, Falcon was another brilliant, just like the sidekick Robin from the Batman world. The story was okay, but the excellent performances and visual narration were the movie's strength. The 3D effects were better than I expected. In a few scenes I thought the villain Winter Soldier was better than the Captain America. He was a surprise package, if you just ignore the antagonist tag he can surely be your favorite from this movie. Even I liked his costume and he also performed some great stunts.

One thing I fascinated about this production house's movie are the post-credit scenes. Yeah, this movie had one too, but that particular scene created lots of curiosity. A good movie and will definitely pass the test being a follow-up either after 'The Avengers' or to 'The First Avenger'. Again Marvel did a wonder job. Just keep those coming, and it will be well backed by the audience if it is worth. The good days are just began for sci-fi and superhero themes. I think I said it every time during Marvel's movie reviews. One last reminder for all that don't miss any marvel's movies because the stories and characters are connected each other since the 'The Avengers' made a debut.

The plot is involving, the characters are well written, and the action is shockingly exciting. I'd say it's a substantial improvement over the solid, but uninspired, original. It gets off to a really good start with a secret mission to board a massive ship. I was surprised at how brutal the action was, but in a good way. Usually Marvel tries to sugar coat it a little too much. It's all very exciting and surprisingly well done, but I do have a few qualms. The action isn't nearly as grounded in reality as Nolan's Batman trilogy, and the plot doesn't delve quite as deeply into the dark side of humanity either. Also, towards the end, the action packed climax did begin to bore me a little bit. It was just a little too repetitive with the massive explosions and people falling. Overall however, the movie still emerges as one of the smartest, most viscerally thrilling, and engaging films of the genre, which when considering the endless supply of examples to chose from, is no small feat. How delighted then to come out of the cinema with more than a satisfied grin plastered on my face. Its a big call but this Captain America is most likely the best of the Marvel films yet.
This Steve Rogers(Cap) has a new world to experiment with and the film finds balance (not quite as superficially as you would think) between his struggle between doing the 'right' thing and his political beliefs and notions. It also might help him to listen to Nirvana and watch The Empire Strikes Back. Theres much research to be done, especially after the events after The Avengers, but again Cap is thrown into an unprecedented situation.
Action set pieces are tight and well choreographed with some innovative fights, not to mention one spectacularly intense scene involving Nick Fury(Sam Jackson) and his accessorized heavy vehicle.
This is bone on bone and you can hear every crushing detail, and despite a flurry of CGI towards the end, a lot of it is of the practical variety. As an action heavy thriller it really is cracking stuff and plays out like a hybrid of The Fugitive meets Mission Impossible 3.
I expect great things from the Russo brothers, the directors and they hopefully will helm more action films in the future.
Robert Redford is a nice touch and brings a shady, 1970's conspiracy vibe, Scarlett Johansson seems to deliver her lines wonderfully and kicks butt with the rest of them and Mackies The Falcon is given a decent back story where i couldn't help thinking it was his The Hurt Locker character somehow transcended into this film.
There is some cookie cutter stuff at times with the dialogue and a cliched reveal that smelt of the film makers wimping out for the sake of audiences rejoicing in such conspicuous fanfare but all in all this is a very surprising and engaging film that serves the cannon of Marvel very well indeed. Now, where to purchase one of those shields!

Who would have though that a movie by Marvel, could be politically astute and suspenseful. And it truly is superior with it's predecessor.

The first thing that really did blow my mind of while watching The Winter Soldier is the CGI, so spectacular, a big improvement since the First Avenger. Just as the CGI, the 3D is incredible, even though there isn't that much 3D-effects. The basic of Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the political/thriller environment, and I didn't expect that in movie by Marvel, so I really got a surprise while watching The Winter soldier, and I think it's wonderful to have such genres in a universe full of superheroes. The story in The Winter Soldier is well thought out, and it really is something wonderful and unique about it.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a highly entertaining, cool and groovy movie from Marvel, and combined with an awesome soundtrack isn't there much negative things about this film. Unfortunately there are some tiny, but important mistakes that made the film (from my perspective) weird. One of these is the high amount of destruction combined with defeat. My explanation is that while sitting in the cinema watching this film, I felt wastefulness in the film, with all the destruction and devastation, what a waste! Another thing that's bad in The Winter Soldier is the ending, it could have been more exiting and entertaining, even though the post-credits scene is awesome! Even though I thought Captain America: The Winter Soldier would be incredible to watch, and that I later was a bit disappointed, I still think Marvel did a hell of a job, especially that they succesfully combined the genres science fiction and action with political thriller.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier got many awesome parts, but at the same time a number of fundamental flaws.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier gets a 8.4/10

It starts off really strong with a very cool action sequence aboard a ship at sea, but just when I think it's going to be one of the better Marvel films, it becomes almost a version some updated political spy thriller from the 1970s. Like the Osterman Weekend, if you will, with superheroes. Not that I am against a film having a story. But the story in this film kind of defies logic. I have read reviews about how great the character of the Winter Solider is, and how he is the best Marvel villain since Loki. I call bullsh#t on that, as the best Marvel villains, imho, are Loki at the top, followed by Doc Ock from Spider-Man 2 and Magneto from X-Men: First Class. Hell, I would go as far as saying even Sebastian Shaw from First Class was a better villain than Winter Soldier. Here is simply akin to the Terminator, showing up when he is called for and then laying waste to all around him. It doesn't require much acting for that, just a strong physical presence, which he does deliver. But no more than Kurst The Undying in Thor: Dark World, a much superior film to this. It had enough going for it that I didn't totally hate it, but at the same time, I expected a lot more from it. I don't blame the actors, as they are all good with the roles they play. I blame a mediocre script with some plot holes I just found difficult to believe. And I am usually way more forgiving than this.

But, hey, that's just my opinion. And clearly I am in the minority here ^^!

Since Joe Johnston didn't direct this one, it doesn't have that corny historic feel to it kinda like the first one did. Instead, this one takes a much darker turn and allows for much greater plot development. Chris Evans once again fulfills the title role nicely, as does Scarlett Johansson, who returns as Black Widow. I was also glad to see Samuel L. Jackson in this one reprising his Nick Fury role. There were also some good new cast additions, like Robert Redford. Great action sequences, along with a cool new villain really made this a great addition to the series of standalone Avenger films before Avengers 2 hits theaters next year. I was slightly impressed by this movie more than the last because of my dislike towards the first. But what surprised me was how correlation and connection that they had with the first movie. This one reminded us about a lot of the stuff that went on the first movie and even a little bit of the avengers. Marvel has been really successful in the past and what they need is some connection with other marvel characters from their own movies. I really loved the references toward other obvious marvel characters like Iron Man and even Doctor Strange! I know that Doctor Strange doesn't even have his own movie yet but it gave me goosebumps. Anyways, the movie was very confusing most of the time. Nearly half way through the movie, nothing was explained and you had no idea what was going on. I was also very pissed off at the bad guys. Well I guess that makes sense because of when we finally get to see them get it handed to them at the end like every other marvel or action movie. What I really did like was how little CGI they used to perform these stunts which is a plus. But what wasn't so great was that you couldn't exactly see the actors doing everything. There was a minimum usage of shaky cam to mask the fact that the actors weren't really doing these stunts. I wasn't sure if they were actually doing the stunts but I was glad there wasn't really much CGI. So I thank the directors for that. Another plus was the character of Sam Wilson, who is Falcon. He had a great character and I was excited to see him in his scenes which he always owned. He was a great addition to the film and it was cool to see Cap with Falcon as they were teamed up in the comics. It was an entertaining movie. It has made me interested in Captain America more than the first one even though I have never been that big of a fan of his character. There was a lot of "WHAT?!" and confusing moments in this movie but it was somewhat resolved up towards the end. I'm not going to use the term "overrated" but I didn't think this movie was that great as everyone thought since everyone thinks so highly of Captain America nowadays. But a decent movie. No spoilers but a really cool ending credits scene tease that got me really hype. Expand

For me winter soldier combines all the best elements of a superhero genre movie.... great titular character, complex and engaging plot, incredible action scenes (The boat, the lift, furys car escape!! - the ending helicarrier sequence!!) superb music and above all a heart that beats for the sense of justice for good vs evil I used to feel when I wore a superman outfit as a 4 year old! This is marvel studios at the top of their game. Seminal stuff here.

There are some really good action set pieces here and there, but that's about it. Everything else here just seems to be more contrived. What the story lacks is depth. 'Nuff said.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A comic book movie with a bit of substance. It seemed as if "Captain America" met "Watergate", "Iran-Contra" and some good ole fashioned genocide all rolled into one organization. To cast Robert Redford was an act of brilliance and the action scenes involving the Captain, SHIELD and "Winter Soldier" were some of the best that I have seen in years. On a side note, this may turn the "Agents of SHIELD" T.V. show upside down. Expand

Good comic book film with realistic fight scenes. Samuel Jackson's acting was sub par and Scarlett looks better as a blonde, but the film works. One of the best films of the year so far.

The action was good, much of what u'd expect from a COMIC book movie. My only real rant about the movie was the comedy wasn't very strong, and wasn't delivered that well at times. However big deal in the scheme of things. A big part about this film tho was Connecting the movies to the TV show, and expanding the "Universe." What Marvel is doing is Brilliant! they deserve a big applause. I just wish ppl would stop leaving the theater until after the credits! (ur missing out on mini trailers) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Best Single-Hero Marvel movie ever. I was pleasantly surprised when HYDRA got into it, and the fact that it was like a political thriller was awesome. I don't think it's as good as The Avengers, but, seriously, what can beat that? This movie also had terrific action, and most of it was real and not CGI which I really liked considering that literally every other superhero uses CGI eccentrically. This movie was a fun thrilling time that every comic book fan should check out. Expand

Here it is, my first review (can't you just feel the excitement?)

The latest installment of the Marvel franchise has landed in the muscly form of Captain America. However the main attraction is neither the size of Chris Evans arms (sorry ladies) nor the pout of the beautiful Scarlett Johansson (never mind boys). Instead, the whole film is nothing short of a game changer for those that follow the Marvel universe and the TV series. Without giving too much away, watching the old films will never be the same again.

Mr Evans does a fantastic job as the man out of time trying to make sense of the world he now inhabits. Joining him this time is Ms Johansson as the arse-kicking Black Widow, and Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, aka, Falcon. Both are great in their sidekick roles; Black Widow gives the girls a reason to cheer by holding her own against the men of the movie, however these moments seem to be inter-cut with several lingering shots of her tightly clad bum. Mackie also plays his part well without looking like he is just auditioning for his own solo film.

The film is action sequence after action sequence but this doesn't detract from the plot. The only negative I have with the faster paced scenes is that sometimes the punches and kicks are a blur (but that could be something to do with my age).

And now onto the titular Winter Soldier. I won't reveal his identity, even if it is pretty much an open secret now. However I will say that, although he is an excellent foil for Steve Roger's Captain, I would have liked to see him a lot more. For a man whose name is in the title, he plays second fiddle to some of the other bad guys.

Despite my Winter Soldier gripe, this is a fantastic film and really does open up the future for the Marvel film franchise. There are little nods to other Marvel characters, both old and new, which should keep every fan boy (and girl) happy. As usual please stay until the end of the credits for two post film sequences, the first of which had me squeal with delight... thank goodness there was only my boyfriend and daughter in the cinema (who were just as excited).

It follows the good Captain’s (always reliably played by Chris Evans) struggle to come to terms with his new contemporary life after decade of suspended animation, and of course, his crime fighting responsibilities at the behest of S.H.I.E.L.D., an organization shrouded by so much secrecy, it’s very intentions are put under much scrutiny. While all this is happening a remnant of Captain America’s past has unearthed, in the form of the Winter Soldier, and the fight becomes far more personal. While the premise looks formidable on paper; the final product is as bland as they come - packaged and sealed for mass production by the Marvel Factory. Director’s Anthony and Joe Russo, took very little artistic risks when making this film: channeling extensive, inelegant action scenes, and action movie clichés that make this film predictable and anti-climatic. From the fake deaths to the real villain masquerading as a good guy for the first half of the movie, this film’s got it all! Like most of the other films made by Marvel, this one simply feels like a stepping stone for the next big movie; possessing very little impact as a standalone feature. As such, it feels like another irrelevant entry in the franchise, that’s bound to cash in at the box office. But I can’t begrudge it for making the big bucks, it does offer some mild entertainment; and it feels fair to commend the studio for their win streak, in that regard. However, I remain largely unimpressed by this movie; and yearn for something boldly creative from the studio… not since ‘Iron Man’ (2008), have I truly been smitten. Expand

An unexpected story with larger roles for characters such as Nick Fury and Black Widow that definitely sets a new standard for future marvel films. My only concern about the movie is that I found the Winter Soldier to have less screen time than he deserved, especially since he was a very good villain that challenged Captain America both physically and mentally. I found that his character was the second best Marvel villain ever seen, only topped by the superb acting and writing for the character 'Loki.' Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is absolutely fabulous (though there are several unanswered questions that really disappointed me at first), being better than the original "Captain America" film and better than "The Avengers" (which I believed to be too crowded with characters). I am definitely interested in seeing the third film, but I would love to see Scarlett Johansson's character (Black Widow) spin off into a new franchise (which one of the scenes pointed to) or have the characters of Captain America (Chris Evans) and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow somehow become more then just co-workers (or both). Just a thought. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were a lot of moments where I face palmed. I hated when Zola explained the whole evil plan to Captain America and Black Widow in the secret underground lab. I know he was stalling but he would've said something else that's **** I also hated how Black Widow kept trying to hook Captain America with a date. This movie lacked humor. But the action sequences between Captain America and Hydra/Winter Soldier was amazing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great film for all, especially a comic book fan like me. Essentially a spy thriller with a superhero, CAWS has a great plot, excellent action, and is a great time.

Every actor portrayed in the movie is great at what they do. Falcon is convincing as a soldier and seems like a cool friend to have, Chris Evans IS Steve Rogers, and Samuel L. Jackson is perfect as himself. The humor in the film is well placed and seems natural. Unlike Iron Man 3 where it seemed overly used and stale over time, Captain America retains its serious nature while still being fun. There weren't any moments where Cap seemed like he was weak for the sake of the plot, the whole movie he never slows down. Falcon is great with his wings, and Black Widow is great as well, but seems a little more like she's just along for the ride.

The Plot: (spoilers ahead)
What I like about the plot is that it's unique. Even if you've read the comics, you'll be thrown into a few twists and surprises. To be honest, the "big reveal" that Bucky was the winter soldier wasn't the greatest twist for me. In fact, the most awesome moment I saw was when Cap visits an underground base and Dr. Zola reappears as a supercomputer, as you never expect it in the film. Going back on the Winter Soldier, he really convinced me that he was awesome. He fights well with a knife and never slows down. Finally, CAWS is definitely superior to its original, and is something you can't miss.

Positives:
+Characters are believable
+Funny
+Stellar action
+Full of fan service
+Twists
+Good pacing

Negatives:
-Use of the word chopper when no soldier uses it since the 90's
-Escaping chases via digging a hole more than once (cop out)

The only thing I disliked, and it came at the end, was the simplicity of putting the alternate code 'blades' into the various heli-carriers, and at the last second, yet. WTF? Like right out of a star trek parody. The battle between the Captain and the Winter Soldier was luke-warm. A little too easy to stay on that thing as it is going down. The rest is outstanding. Chris Evans is also as awesome as ever as the Captain, really bringing the character to new depths that have never been seen before from the character. One of the coolest things about the film is the Captain's adjustment to life in the post-Avengers modern world. His morals as a man of WWII honor and dignity definitely contrast from the outlook on war and politics to that of a character from the present such as Nick Fury which is something I really thought was needed for the movie. Another standout performance was from Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, for which she portrays very well just like she's done since Iron Man 2. Captain America: The Winter Solider is a great piece to the Marvel Cinematic and to the Captain America standalone films as well and it really makes me excited for what's to come for The Avengers: Age of Ultron. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fun. Action-packed. Derivative of past attempts and somewhat predictable. You know this. Unlike the first Captain America, Chris Evans seems to finally accept his role as Cap. Look up his interviews where he states he rejected the role nearly a dozen times and was effectively "forced" to play Cap. It shows in the first film where he looks like a pretty boy who doesn't want to do his job. Now, he looks like a pretty who totally digs his job. Maybe the bonuses from the Avengers being the second highest grossing film of all time has given him extra motivation to actually commit to an iconic role instead of getting by on his looks. George Clooney, I'm looking at you. The film was flawlessly edited although I am getting sick of these directors with their unprofessional shaky cam. I can understand shaky cam for the action scenes because these are actors and not martial artists, poor Georges St. Pierre had to wear training wheels and go easy on Evans, but even the mall sequence of hiding in plain sight had shaky cam. Seriously, film school drop out or just pandering to hyperactive dubstep loving tweens? Either way, it gives this X-Millenial a minor headache an adversely affects my enjoyment of an otherwise highly entertaining Marvel Studios film. Winter Soldier can't act for squat and his reliant on visual effects. Last but not least, someone tell Johanssen to take voice lessons. It's bad enough she's slow as molasses in her fight scenes, she requires the most amount of shaky cam and quick cuts to hide her lack of athleticism similar to Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, but her voice is so throaty it sounds like she's strangling herself every time she speaks. Take.A.Darn.Voice.Lesson. Learn to speak from your diaphgragm and not your trachea. Learn to give a speech in case you actually win an award. Lastly, the elevator scene was my favorite part. Evans truly shows his commitment when he asks if anybody wants to leave while surrounded by goons. I can't wait for Captain America 3. Expand
