Not as good as I expected it to be. Maybe because I saw the Avengers first and it spoiled me. It's not bad for a one time watch but I can't see myself wanting to ever see it again. I'd rather read the comics.

Better than Thor but still not the showstopper I expected. It does stay true to the comics and does a good job of showing how the man becomes hero. Hugo Weaving does and excellent job as the evil nemesis.

How anyone can call this movie good is beyond me. It would be similar to calling Mc'donalds good food. You can do it but you know you're just lying to yourself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I could not stand this movie. I hated the character of captain America and the story. But most of all it was just stupid and didn't make any sense Germans with instant kill machine gun lasers and laser tanks vs American riflemen with single shot rifles, but of course only one American dies and the massive army of high tech laser carrying Germans all die. Hated this movie and i left feeling that i had payed to watch American propaganda. (also i hated that they basically didn't include Britain at all except for one very over the top Englishmen) Expand

The costumes and the whole look of the film is great, but the action sequences and story felt flat to me. You do care for the characters and the movie is a nice prequel to The Avengers.

First of all, they don't try to modernize it. So many of these super hero movies are modernizing things for today, and they didn't do that with Captain America. Second of all, Chris Evans... Third of all, they include THE COMIC BOOK in the movie - that basically puts the plot in real time, and comic book time, because the comic was INSPIRED by the true man. They wink to the fans by giving him his true suit on stage when he jokingly punches enemy, but make it more sleek and 'military' like for his real deal outfit when fighting in the movie. True wit - and I'm sorry, no backstory? Um, okay, he's a guy who wants to fight for his country and at first can't - he's helpless with women, his friend is a play - but all he wants is to be proud of himself and his country - gets an opportunity, and becomes the first avenger. PLUS his best friend DIES, which is terrible and awesome at the same time. Expand

The director keeps the movie light throughout and does not go into the dark area that Dark Knight brought forward. This is surely not a bad thing especially in the beginning where the scenes are ace and a move in such a pacing that they are a complete fun experience. It all looks great especially Evan's transformation to the little guy is impeccable. After that it kind of goes down hill, the set pieces aren't that great and Cap is no Batman, he's just not that interesting. None of this is all that bad except for the fact that the ending is a huge anti-climax which kind of makes the whole movie pointless. Expand

Hugo Weaving was a great villian and Tommy Lee Jones was a solid supporting actor too. I thought it ended good too and it worked perfectly to set up how the Captain came into the new time period without really messing anything up or giving a stupid explaination for it either. However there are some problems that I had with it.

1. Chris Evans is a rather poor lead. He does get better somewhat later on in the film but he just isnt a satisfying lead in this film at all.

2. I hated how the action scenes not only looked painfully obviously fake but they were slowed down in an attempt to make it look cool when really it looked trash. Id have rathed let the action scenes play out in real time then try to patheticly re-create an action scene from 300.

3. The plot didnt really satisfy you. It was good enough to keep you watching without really thinking of it or asking questions but once it was over, You realize how shallow it actually is and how good of a job they did at covering it up.

Overall it was a good comic book movie but it had its flaws.

HowOut of all the major Marvel superheroes, Steve Rogers is definitely the least interesting of the bunch. He's a lot like Superman where he's basically the embodiment of good... and well... that's about it. The movie runs into this problem. How do you make a good movie when your hero is simply a patriotic do-gooder? Well thanks to Chris Evans' performance and a script that has fun with the material, Captain America ends up being a superhero movie full of fun and excitement, even if it doesn't quite overcome all of its obstacles. The movie's strongest element is its pacing. The screenwriters smartly focus the movie's running time on how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America which is the most interesting part of the story. When it comes to the development of the romance between Rogers and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Captain America's mission to take down the Red Skull, the movie breezes on through like a WWII highlight reel. There is a more drawn out action scene where Captain America has to rescue Allied prisoners, but the filmmakers seem to realize that once you see Captain America take down one group of Hydra soldiers, you don't really need to see it again. The movie does get a little too cheesy for its own good, but unlike "Green Lantern," the cheesiness only hits for brief stints, and I mean come on, it's Captain America. That's practically a recipe for cheese right there. The only real problem "Captain America" faces is its less than fascinating hero. He's so purely good that every choice he makes turns out to be a predictable one. Like I said before, the filmmakers handle him well, but there's only so much you can do with the character. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Another Marvel Atrocity, It has a strong start, then quickly ran out of steam especially in the climax of the battle between good and evil. Red Skull was a seriously lousy villain. He was more laughable than frightening, especially his cheap looking face. The romance;. you can integrate a romantic subplot in a "superhero" movie and do it well, I've seen it done (Spider-man 2, The Dark Knight). But this was much too Thor-esque but the ending was good as necessary. And it was okay. I could live with it. UNTIL Steve chose to utter, "I'll be okay. But I had a date." or something to that effect. More corny scripting. Expand

While some super hero movies have recently been destroyed, this one was pretty great, as good as the first Iron Man. The action is intense and well-paced, consisting of more than than punch, shoot, run. The story is advanced well, and the story itself is really good, using the background war to give good reason for their actions. Some of it isn't very realistic, (He can judge ricochet angles perfectly, run as fast as a car, throw knives, deflect plasma blasts, and act?) but it's a superhero movie. The script is well done, and the side character Peggy is a highlight. They did the 1942 city really well, except for the fact that the bad guys were developing weapons decades ahead of our modern guns. Still, this is a movie you want to see. And avoid the 3D. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came in to the theatres with high expectations and I loved it. The action is great and the ability to see Tony Stark's dad is really cool. The only thing I didn't like that it was rushed and Bucky's death was quick and over with. But I felt that Captain America was a really good guy and I think a movie is good when it can make you feel things about the characters. I think the ending was good with Captain America waking up in modern day New York and the last line in the movie with Captain America saying "I had a date" was really cool that he still thought about Peggy even after he's been asleep for 70 years. Anyways, this is a great movie and I can't wait for The Avengers. Expand

It just has way to many needless scenes, like what felt like a hour of Captain Americas Broadway Military ads. If those scenes could have been cut down to like 3 min. it would have been a lot better. In turn replace them with some actual scenes of his squad fighting Nazi's. Add a little horror of war to the mix, make it seem believable that we need Captain America. It would have been nice to see the Capt. get a punch in on Hitler like in the old comics. Chris Evans did a great job, much better suit than the human torch. Action scenes were great and most characters where realized well. I just wish this was more than a easy set up for The Avengers movie. Expand

Its not just Evans' portrayal of Cap as a plank of elm but its also a film overburdened by too many fighting montages and stupid set pieces. If anything Captain America did its job and linked it to the Avengers but everything else was just so idiotic and clunky that you can't enjoy the ride. However before I finish mocking the very core of this piece of tripe I have to say Tommy Lee Jones eating steak has to be one of the most captivating things I have seen in recent history. Its just too bad that great actors like Jones, the other Jones and Weaving had to get involved in a movie without anything going for it. Expand

There are, however, other more significant elements in the film itself that ensured it would always fall below expectations, the most obvious flaw being the lack of a 'race against time' element. The viewer can expect a lot of action, which is extremely well done and has become what we expect of Marvel superhero films recently, but it becomes wearisome and it is not until the final stages of the film that the viewer can enjoy a suspense-fuelled action sequence. This is as good as the film gets. To reach this point though, the viewer will have to endure a slow-pace mid-sequence, in which the director succumbs to cliche filming techniques such as montages to keep the film moving forward but failing to engage the viewer effectively. Hugo Weaving takes on the role of Red Skull, a role which I feel could of been better performed by a different actor, not that Weaving performed poorly, but that the accent he donned for the role (a quasi-German/Russian) was at times laughable and took the audience completely out of the story. We also a large stock of typical characters that are almost universally used in action; there's the strong-willed female love interest (Atwell); the hard case military commander (Jones); and the ill-fated best friend (Stan). Although all of these characters are pulled off tastefully, particularly Atwell, it is somewhat predictable. The film is hampered further by a poor soundtrack, a petty point, but a good soundtrack should be a given in such a high-profile and high-budget film. For the avid comic book film fan such as myself, there are moments in Captain America that will undoubtedly have you sitting on the edge of your seat; very well delivered cameo appearances, a screenplay and plot that does the comic book justice, and a feeling of more to come. This adaption of a Marvel hero is nowhere near the standard set by other releases such as Iron Man, and can arguably be seen as the weakest release by Marvel Studios. That does not necessarily make Captain America a bad film, but it does mean that it is missing a lot. There is nothing to Captain America as a film that hasn't been done before, and nor does it do it better. Expand

Anyway this was a fantastic movie. Chris Evans does a fantastic job as Steve Rogers AKA Captain America, being a short wimp who cant fight his own fights, but then becoming the superpowerful mercenary named Captain America. Hugo Weaving is also excellent as the villain Red Skull, the rule is put Hugo Weaving in a villain role and it will be awesome, For Instance Megatron in the new Transformers movies, Agent Smith in the Matrix films, Metal Beak in Legend of the Gaurdians, or even the good guy V in V for Vendetta. He pulls off the accent for the character well and does a fantastic job in his dialogue and his backhanded nature. Now I will give a warning that the film is not very entertaining for about the first 30 minutes, but when Captain America gets his suit on and his shield it becomes one Badass film. The action is what steals the show for me, it is fantastic and exhilerating to watch. The ending is ppretty much the same as every other marvel movie lately but I was surprsied to see a Trailer for *Spoiler Alert* The Avengers at the end of the film. The script was lazy and quite mediocre at best, with inconsistent dialogue, very little semblance of time and a plot that only skimmed the surface of what could have been achieved in this world war 2 adventure flick. In one instance; montages were used to show the captain and his team's earlier missions, rather than detailed scenes showing such missions (which was unfortunate). Such script weaknesses caused underdevelopment in both the story and characters. The score was perpetual and annoying, and the acting was okay (with the exception of Weaving and Jones who were quite good), but luckily; the simple character arcs and the romance between our leads, added a little to these 2 dimensional characters. The retro production of this movie won me over completely and its pulpy qualities were nice to watch as its hardly being done now. The comic book movies of this summer comes to an end, and I must say it was a pretty average group of movies (ranging from horrible to 'okay'). I may forever be baffled as to why this film got such good reviews. But its technical attributes are easily the best of the 4 comicbook films. but it surely wasn't the best, artistically. Expand

I expected it to be amazing, and it was for about 40 Mins, until Steve turns into Captain America. The movie goes steeply down hill from that point. The pacing in the second half of the movie was terrible, and nothing makes any sense. The fight scene choreography was the worst I've ever seen in any comic book movie. In fact, i don't think there was any fight scene choreography at all. I may be a little harsh with this review but if you have one of the greatest fighters in the world wouldn't he have some sort of training? Wouldn't he have at least one memorable fight? The movie was not all bad, The main actors were quite pleasant due to good casting, except Evans. He looks perfect but his corny one liner jokes don't fit with him being Captain America. This is largely due to the director not having a clue. All of the scenes that were not super heroish, that were made to look like the early 1900's were great! The cinematography was not bad but suffered from lasers. Really bad lasers. It was like "that scene looks really nice, ..wait...no...noooo...stop....stop it...why are they shooting lasers? and why do they look worse then the lasers in the GIJoe movie?" The movie all in all was a good home rental but should have been at least an iron man level movie but came no where near. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Steve Rogers needs a bodyguard, somebody to save the WWII soldier wanna-be from running off his mouth, since the 4-F reject, five times and counting, is oblivious to the fact that his physique doesn't lend itself toward fistacuffs in back alleys with ignorant louts. A patrioteer, almost to a fault, the proverbial ninety-pound weakling pipes up when a heckler in the movie house, from Steve's point-of-view, has the gall to disrespect the GIs fighting overseas, as depicted in the newsreel, causing the proto-hippie to air his somewhat anachronistic disapproval over all that reality flickering in the dark. Due to Steve's unwavering jingoism and lack of prudence, the future Captain America ends up in an unwinnable fight against the apolitical one-reeler enthusiast(he likes cartoon), getting thoroughly thrashed amidst the garbage cans of the back street, until his best friend Bucky(1-H and set for deployment) intervenes, and defuses the one-sided altercation by matching the assailant's brawn, inch by inch and pound for pound. Steve just doesn't know when to quit, egging the stranger on with the claim that he "can do this all day," like a martyr for all the 4-F rejects of his generation. This misplaced confidence can also be found in Homer Hickam at the outset of "October Sky"(directed by the same filmmaker), where the future aerospace engineer for NASA, as an unpromising defensive end for his high school football team, gets personal with a teammate on the other side of the line, calling him a "son of a b*tch", just before the bigger and stronger player serves him a pancake block. Sooner rather than later, Homer realizes that, unlike his older brother, he will never become a football hero, because some body types just aren't cut out for the game's collisional wear and tear. Instead of gridiron glory, he answers his true calling, rocketry, affording this small town hick the means to escape a lifetime's servitude in the West Virginia coalmines, when he represents his friends at a national science fair, capturing first prize, which he then parlays into a college education. Conversely, Steve, by all appearances, has no such backup plan. In his mind, it's the war or bust, so a little human alchemy, as proposed by Dr. Erskine at the Chicago World's Fair, isn't going to frighten off the twerp, whose drive to serve his country knows no boundaries. Outfitted with a sarcophagus before the army's brass, Steve allows the German doctor to inject his body full of serum, which has a steroidal effect on the musculature, giving him a competitive advantage over the other soldiers. Neither mutant nor an alien being from a distant planet, or for that matter, a man transmogrified by accident, Captain America is unique, because his superpower, the product of government-sanctioned medical experimentation, has a regimental quality that makes him, potentially, menacing to the world at large, who may view him as a living symbol of tyranny, once you reallocate the forties-era relic to the present, as this film does. Abridged from "Rocket Boys", the best-selling memoir that "October Sky" is adapted from, lies the fact that Hickam volunteered for a tour of duty in Vietnam(a full two years before the draft), whereas "Captain America", as well, circumvents the unpopular war too, diverging from "The Avengers" mythology, in which Steve wakes up from suspended animation during the ongoing skirmish in East Asia, and becomes something akin to a conscientious objector. Even though, through Captain America's eyes, the largely faceless Vietnamese lacked an iconic figure like Adolph Hitler to hate, he still needed to fight, since the Marvel Comics creation, in effect, during the Second World War, was Uncle Sam transliterated into pulp terms, recruiting men for active duty(in the film, the sloganeering is largely implied, trumpeting instead the savings bond at USO shows), or in other words, sentencing them to die, having been indoctrinated by propaganda through comic panels, long before the old man with the goatee pointed his finger at "you" in the real world. Using sports technology as an analogy for eugenics, it's ironic how Hickam makes it to Vietnam(not the NFL) on his own merits, whereas in the film, the super-soldier sleeps throughout the entire protracted ordeal. Differing from his comic book counterpart, who no longer sees America as a shining bastion for democracy, this filmic curio from the Eisenhower days is in for a shock, when Nick Fury briefs him about the intermediary steps leading up to our country's present-day complexion. No longer are there clear-cut good guys and bad guys, like the avengers in "My Bodyguard", where in the penultimate scene, the smallish Clifford(but bold like Steve) and Lunderman immobilize Moody and his hired goon Mike, in a public park. It's not 1941, or even 1979, anymore. The United States is Matt Dillon and the kid from "Meatballs" all rolled up in one. Expand

It isn't Ironman good, but its pretty damn close. As an underdog story, I think many people will relate to the Steve Rogers pre-super soldier serum character. Here is a guy with the selfless heart of champion, but the size and athletic ability of Willow. On the other end of the spectrum, post-super soldier serum Captain America is a hero we would all love to be.
The plot moves smoothly, the characters have plenty of depth and the action sequences are fantastic. Even the tension that slowly builds between Cap and Peggy Carter is done well. The only weak spot is the friendship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. I don't see how these two guys would ever be best friends. I guess they felt obligated to put Bucky in the movie, but this is one instance where deviating from the original concept probably would have been the best choice.

Expand

I have to admit, First half an hour for me was full of excitement and expectations from this movie, but after that I started yawning, sleeping, moving on the chair from one side to another and eventually I left the cinema. Look at movies like Ironman, X-men, Spiderman, Hulk. Those movies have not only amazing effects but also great story, actors feel their characters, authentic historical facts and language. I don't understand why Marvel made this Capt. America such an expected movie when the actors can't even learn German language, and naming the main villain Schmidt and placing there Agent Smith from Matrix is just pathetic. So therefore, this movie deserves nothing but grade 2 for effects and for Hailey Atwell, who's hot. I strongly do not recommend to go see this movie in cinema. I got a 3D glasses and I did not find one single 3D effect, so waste of money. Expand

But when i saw the movie,i appreciated that having almost the whole thing in WW2 allows you to get to know that Cap better about the kind of person he is,& the era he's from, with a totally different way of life.It also allows us to see the Howling Commandos in action as well as Dum Dum Dugan & seeing Tony Starks father,Howard Stark. It made me appreciate more also, the way that Cap was a man ahead of his time, being one of the first Super Heroes.I thought the film had alot of heart,& i liked all the main characters,as they all bought something to the story. So as it goes,i REALLY enjoyed the whole WW2 era in the movie,& it was all done really well, but part of Captain Americas origin is the fish out of water/man out of his time part, which wasnt really covered in this movie,so that important part of Cap's story is going to be have to squeezed into & shared along with the other Avengers.I hope Weedon can do him justice under those conditions still, time will tell.Avengers will be epic i'm sure, but i'm not sure its fair on us Cap fans,to have the remainder of his origin story squeezed in with the big events & many other characters that are going to be in the Avengers.Great film though. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Summary: See it twice, day one Blu-ray purchase.

Disclosure: I am a Cap (and Avengers) fanboy from waaaaay back, so I was a little apprehensive about this film; I still bear the scars from watching the Matt Salinger Captain America - Roger Corman's FF movie is the only thing that could make the 1990 Cap movie look good. Needless to say, I was well-pleased with the treatment ol' winghead gets this time around. The decision to make this a period piece was a good one, and the film pulls it off convincingly. The characterizations were generally good, though I thought Howard Stark did not come off as quite the genius that is implied in other Marvel flicks. Chris Evans is Steve Rogers in the way that Chris Hemsworth became Thor - it's hard to see anyone else in the role (this goes without saying for Robert Downy / Tony Stark).

Translating a comic book to the big screen is a delicate affair; at face value a comic book can be a silly thing - folks running around in pajamas beating the bejeebus out of the bad guys - but to make a good movie you have treat the subject seriously. Marvel has been able to strike this balance (with a few exceptions - Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and X3 I'm looking at you...) and Captain America is another success. Definitely in the top 4 or 5 comic book movies - looking forward to May 2012!

My 6 year old son rates it "as good as Iron Man" - the highest of high praise. 9 year old daughter concurs, though she liked Thor better.

If you have your mind made up about the genre then there will be plenty of things to ridicule in Captain America, but there's a lot more good in it than bad. The script is very engaging and the acting is perfectly suitable for this type of film. The 1942 setting is refreshing, as well as the unapologetically old-fashioned story. It has a vintage superhero aura that coaxes you in and allows you to overlook it's numerous flaws. If you aren't willing to simplify your taste in cinema for 2 hours then this movie won't impress you at all, but in the end you'd be happy you did it, and the exploitative ending will leave you feeling bittersweetly rewarded. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't know anything about Captain America going in, never watched the trailer or the comic books, but i gotta say, this movie makes me very interested in Captain America and is now considering to buy the comic books as i'm writing this. This movie is REALLY good. Before i watched it, i thought it was just going to be some war movie that is super boring, but it surprises me how interesting this is. It starts of with the smaller version of Steve Rogers. they did a GREAT job on the CGI effect of 'small' Chris Evans. you can hardly tell that it is CGI and most of the time, i thought that they just hired a Chris Evans look-alike to play him. He looks very real.

They also did this thing where they poke fun of the cheesy Captain America. it's like they know that Captain America is cheesy, so they just play along with it, giving reasons to why it is so cheesy. and it all makes sense. the character had comic books and films based on him, which is like real life, making an interesting connection.

Steve Rogers (Captain America) is an interesting character. all he ever wanted to do is to serve his country despite his size, which is the reason why he wasn't accepted as a solider. he is very courageous and is willing to sacrifice himself to save others.

Captain America is also part of this Marvel Cinematic Universe thing where many films are linked together and is just giving the back story so that people will have the context to understand the Avengers movie. there are some interesting connections. like Howard Stark, the father of Tony Stark(Iron Man) is working with the military and is the super-awesome-weapon-and-technology-developer of this movie. he reminds me of tony stark, but not as much of a womanizer as him. at the start of the film, they show the modern day and Captain America is discovered, being frozen for 70years(like in the comics) and at the end of the movie, it continues with the modern day story and he is being recruited by S.H.I.E.D.S. After the credits, they showed a stinger, which all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films have if you haven realize by now, and after that, THEY SHOWED A TEASER TRAILER FOR THE AVENGER! its like Back to the Future 3 again for me, a trailer after a movie.

they follow pretty well with the comic book, i guess. they had the original design for the shield first, before the circular one, which is pretty cool.

they also have this romance between our hero and a female officer(Peggy) which apparently is the aunt of Sharon Carter from the comics. i think the romance will expand to Sharon in the Avengers now that he is in Present Day. I say that is because the romance between Steve and Peggy is pretty much of a tragedy. they only shared one kiss! it is pretty heartbreaking to watch them part at the end when Captain America 'died'. and when bucky(steve's best friend) die too.

the first half of the film is very good. it takes its time to show the origin of Captain America and also the rise of the villian(Red Skull). then the second part of the film kicked right into the action, connected by a montage of a cheesy Captain America touring as a celebrity, poking fun at the character. and Stan Lee's cameo is in this montage too.

the reason why i gave it a 9 instead of a 10 is because that they didn't focus much on the villain Red Skull, and he died at the end too. they did focus on him to a certain degree, but after he peeled off his skin literally turned into the Red Skull, they stop focusing on him that much. i am more of a villain guy, so i may be biased on this one, but i'm sure many comic book fans wants to see more of this Red Skull. so this movie doesn't focus much on the villain but much more on the hero, which is what it should be. i agree that they should show more of the villain, but i also disagree with myself because this is a Captain America movie, they did the right thing by focusing more on the hero, i feel more attached to the character after watching the movie.

overall, this is a GREAT movie, go check it out. can't wait for The Avengers.

It's got all the entertainment you've come to expect fromCaptain America is a fairly standard Marvel origin story, but on the more competent end of the origin story scale along with Iron Man rather than the incompetent end with Ghost Rider. It's got all the entertainment you've come to expect from Marvel summer blockbusters derived from slick storytelling, creative action and a sprinkling of humour. What lifts Cap up above the rank-and-file is it's satire of wartime propaganda and patriotism. Easily one of the strongest sequences is when the Cap receives his first mission, not action scene to test his newly acquired powers as one might expect, but a song-and-dance tour to keep American hearts and minds (and wallets) in support of the war. The film does have drawbacks - not least of which is a common one amongst superhero origin stories, that is to say a pretty rubbish villian. Poor old Hugo Weaving does his best as really nasty Nazi Red Skull, but does little but scheme and gurn behind a big red face. That's what the villain in an origin story has to do, unfortunately, merely provide enough of a challenge to create spectacle, but not be too difficult for the hero to best - it's only the first chapter in their story afterall. The Cap's other chief problem is really Marvel's - rather than dedicating a whole film to introducing one of their biggest stars, they chose to share the runtime between Captain America and the origins of the Avengers, hence the title: The First Avenger. So it's part origin and part prequel to next year's super-fantastic-wonder-team extravaganza. Dispite these drawbacks, the film is still very, very fun. Some nice action, effects and humour keeps the film moving, and Evans makes a likeable protagonist. It really is quite an achievement to make such a goody two-shoes so likeable, the Cap really has always been quite a bland character (not a personality defect in sight!) maybe it's just Evans' effortless boyish charm. Stanley Tucci, Hayley Attwell and Tommy Lee Jones in usual authoritarian grouch mode, in addition to Alan Silvestri's big, brash and brassy score also add to the quality of the film. So Captain America is a perfectly decent period superhero flick, and you're sure to have a good time watching it. It's not exceptional, but that's mostly because origin stories rarely are, and Marvel just seems to want to pack everything they do at the moment with knowing fan-boy nods to The Avengers. Expand

I knew the basics about him like he's in the original avengers and he originally lived in the 1940s and other things like that. That was actually a good thing because if I knew exactly what should've happened in the comics I think I wouldn't enjoy the film. The movie was good, even funny at times (Cap. America wasn't really funny in the comics I think), acting was nice and the story was pretty decent. There were times though where I felt it was a little anti-climatic. Like there was an action scene and the guy is in a live or die situation and while you wait for his fate it will cut to another scene talking about his fate but not actually showing it. But aside from other minor dislikes the film is good and is way better than the previous 'Avenger' film: Thor. Expand

Unlike most, including I, believed, this movie was not some rushed Hollywood sell-out. On the contrary, this movie shocked me greatly, giving me more than I hoped for, or expected from a movie of this popularity. Instead of a glimmering, crowd-please that would be easy to draw in a crowd, it was a true homage to what Captain America is all about. It leaves you with the proud feeling to be an American, as cheesy as it sounds. More of the movie was spent on his actual story, characteristics, and the upbringing of his new suit(as compared to the comics), which was quite an interesting take. The movie tells the story of "Cap" in a very modern fashion, as it should be, without drifting too far from its roots. Most of all, the movie doesn't feel rushed, which is pretty impressive considering they had to explain how he got to the modern day world not aging a day for 70 years. Overall, this movie is a must see of the Summer, and the best choice by far to lead in next year's Avengers movie. Expand

Seems pretty obvious they just threw this together to make a few dollars, and to preface the Avengers film. What a waste of time and money. I have never cared less about a super hero, and was actually rooting for the bad guys, who were WAY cooler than the good guys. The editing and cut scenes were terrible. He runs, jumps the enormous, fire engulfed, opening, and... is running to the exit. He runs, grabs a chain to swing over dozens of enemies (all of them shooting at him) and... is running through a field. The good guys grab a bunch of the bad guy's vastly superior weapons, but when then storm the enemy's stronghold, then use weak, conventional weapons. Where did the shield material come from? How does it come back to him when he throws it? The ending was absolutely ridiculous. The ONLY saving grace of this movie was Hayley Atwell. WOW. Seeing her in that red dress gave this a couple of extra rating points. I will never get those 2 hours, or $14 back. If this is the basis of The Avengers, I may skip it! Expand

He is officially an actor who exudes acting perfection when on screen. Some fans who are familiar with Chris Evans' turn as the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies may also want to take a second look at his acting prowess and stage charisma as Captain America. Evans is no longer the exasperating wisecracking sidekick. Evans captures Captain America's palpable candor, untouchable honesty, and magnanimity. Captain America is a Baby Boomer's boy scout, and Evans plays it to a tee. The film's story could use some development, but I'm suspecting that the film makers learned that comic book movie fans generally don't go in for long-winded dialogue and expansive character study (ala The Return of Superman). The audience is treated to a brief development of Steve Rogers' character, then it's off to the races as Captain America battles the dark forces of Nazism. Overall, "Captain America" is a great movie for a mixed crowd. For those not very familiar with the character, the brief development and fast-paced action makes for an enjoyable ride. For those die hard Cap fans, the director is careful to pay homage to the Golden Age of Captain America, while setting the stage for the larger frame of the "Avengers" movie. Be sure to keep your seat until after the credits roll. An extended "Avengers" trailer awaits those who are patient. My vote: 7 out of 10 for a solid comic book flick. Expand

First of all... Where is, in the hell, the background story?
Oh, I got it... It's just some kind of excuse for these meaningless gunshots. "Oh, damn, is a war!" YES! The great super-hero Captain America is shown as a big brainless mass of muscles and a damned shield that I don't know HOW works against all those attacks, because it only defends his empty head!
And, of course, in the middle of all, he finds a space to kiss the girl.
No, I have no problems against the Cap, but this movie is simply useless. Made just to say that all of the Avengers have their own movies. I'll really appreciate if the Avengers movie have something smart on it, just like the Iron Man's... and unlike this Cap America's crappy thing.

But, beyond all this, if you want some movie with no commitment to physics nor background story; if you really want to face something just for fun - or maybe for some excuse to kiss in the dark of the cine - go on, but I am not responsible for the consequences
