From my NES days playing the captain america game till today, what will my expectation be? after watching Thor and were abit disappointed by it, I had very low expectations. I give it very good marks for story, special effects, etc. Someone told me that Marvel is setting up The Avengers for next year: Captain America, The Hulk?, Spiderman, etc. DC Comics has Superman, Wonderwoman, Batman, etc and I'm sure we'll see that next. Captain America follows after Thor introducing characters and references from Thor and Iron Man. Like Thor, the movie takes place in a different time/setting compared to what we were accustomed to in Iron man and The Incredible hulk. It's a great time. I enjoyed it a lot. It's just ya standard cap flick. But it's an enjoyable one that keeps ya engaged. The Sequel to Captain America is fantastic though. An absolutely sensational superhero movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came in to the theatres with high expectations and I loved it. The action is great and the ability to see Tony Stark's dad is really cool. The only thing I didn't like that it was rushed and Bucky's death was quick and over with. But I felt that Captain America was a really good guy and I think a movie is good when it can make you feel things about the characters. I think the ending was good with Captain America waking up in modern day New York and the last line in the movie with Captain America saying "I had a date" was really cool that he still thought about Peggy even after he's been asleep for 70 years. Anyways, this is a great movie and I can't wait for The Avengers.… Expand

The cast was great, and I appreciate how the producers actually took characters from the 40s-era comics instead of random ones from all over the storyline (I'm looking at you, X-Men: First Class). An enjoyable adventure that can appeal to children as well as adults. The story is decent and the action scenes are executed well. I believe Chris Evans was the perfect actor to play the role of Captain America. He embodied what i believe Captain America would look like if he were real. The film moves at a good pace and has a good mix of comedy and action.

It's interesting, entertaining, action packed, and a good way to spend 2 hours. That's about all I can say. It's not 'The Dark Knight' but it's not 'Batman and Robin', given those are DC comic films and this is a Marvel film, it's still aIt's interesting, entertaining, action packed, and a good way to spend 2 hours. The story is advanced well, and the story itself is really good, using the background war to give good reason for their actions. Some of it isn't very realistic, (He can judge ricochet angles perfectly, run as fast as a car, throw knives, deflect plasma blasts, and act?) but it's a superhero movie. The script is well done, and the side character Peggy is a highlight. They did the 1942 city really well, except for the fact that the bad guys were developing weapons decades ahead of our modern guns. Still, this is a movie you want to see. And avoid the 3D.… Expand

The script is very engaging and the acting is perfectly suitable for this type of film. The 1942 setting is refreshing, as well as the unapologetically old-fashioned story. It has a vintage superhero aura that coaxes you in and allows you to overlook it's numerous flaws. If you aren't willing to simplify your taste in cinema for 2 hours then this movie won't impress you at all, but in the end you'd be happy you did it, and the exploitative ending will leave you feeling bittersweetly rewarded.… Expand

Disclosure: I am a Cap (and Avengers) fanboy from waaaaay back, so I was a little apprehensive about this film; I still bear the scars from watching the Matt Salinger Captain America - Roger Corman's FF movie is the only thing that could make the 1990 Cap movie look good. Needless to say, I was well-pleased with the treatment ol' winghead gets this time around. The decision to make this a period piece was a good one, and the film pulls it off convincingly. The characterizations were generally good, though I thought Howard Stark did not come off as quite the genius that is implied in other Marvel flicks. Chris Evans is Steve Rogers in the way that Chris Hemsworth became Thor - it's hard to see anyone else in the role (this goes without saying for Robert Downy / Tony Stark).

Translating a comic book to the big screen is a delicate affair; at face value a comic book can be a silly thing - folks running around in pajamas beating the bejeebus out of the bad guys - but to make a good movie you have treat the subject seriously. Marvel has been able to strike this balance (with a few exceptions - Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and X3 I'm looking at you...) and Captain America is another success. Definitely in the top 4 or 5 comic book movies - looking forward to May 2012!

My 6 year old son rates it "as good as Iron Man" - the highest of high praise. 9 year old daughter concurs, though she liked Thor better.… Expand

Enjoyably pulpy and confidently hokey, Captain America is more or less the same package you got with Iron Man 2 and Thor, which is to say, "Let's just keeping hyping that goddamn Avengers movie, until everyone is guaranteed to hate it."

Heureusement, ce détail gênant est ici utilisé au premier degré en guise de caricature, et ça fonctionne! J'aimerai également féliciter la photographie du film, donnant à ces années 40 un grand charme visuel. Quant au reste, Captain America reste un film Marvel honorable. Certes trop classique dans son scénario, le film nous offre tout de même quelques bons acteurs (surtout Hugo Weaving et Tommy Lee Jones, comme d'habitude), des séquences divertissantes et bien réalisées (pas mal d'effets spéciaux à l'ancienne) un humour sympathique. Bravo également pour les décors, maquillages, accessoires et décors, donnant au film un côté science-fiction. Dommage que le film se perd dans sa seconde partie dans des scènes abrégées, perdant de son charme. En tout cas, c'est mieux que Thor! Et si vous voyez le film, restez jusqu'à la fin du générique : bande-annonce des Avengers!… Expand

Captain America was definitely the best superhero flick this year. It wasn't the greatest film I've seen but it was thouroughly entertaining and the acting was on point. Chris Evans played a great Captain America. The begining dragged on for a little bit but once the movie picks up it stays entertaining for the rest of the film. It was definitely a solid flick and although it's pg-13 I'd say it was pretty kid friendly for the most part. Red Skull is a little scary but he is the villain after all.… Expand

Although it never sets the pulse racing to an extreme, CA is a really solid and enjoyable superhero flick. Now since 2008 there has been build up for the new Avengers movie starting with "Iron Man" and for some reason they call this one the first avenger. Anyway this was a fantastic movie. Anyway this was a fantastic movie. Chris Evans does a fantastic job as Steve Rogers AKA Captain America, being a short wimp who cant fight his own fights, but then becoming the superpowerful mercenary named Captain America. Hugo Weaving is also excellent as the villain Red Skull, the rule is put Hugo Weaving in a villain role and it will be awesome, For Instance Megatron in the new Transformers movies, Agent Smith in the Matrix films, Metal Beak in Legend of the Gaurdians, or even the good guy V in V for Vendetta. He pulls off the accent for the character well and does a fantastic job in his dialogue and his backhanded nature. Now I will give a warning that the film is not very entertaining for about the first 30 minutes, but when Captain America gets his suit on and his shield it becomes one Badass film. The action is what steals the show for me, it is fantastic and exhilerating to watch. The ending is ppretty much the same as every other marvel movie lately but I was surprsied to see a Trailer for *Spoiler Alert* The Avengers at the end of the film. So If you are looking for an entertaining action film for this summer don't pass this one up.… Expand

Out of all the major Marvel superheroes, Steve Rogers is definitely the least interesting of the bunch. How do you make a good movie when your hero is simply a patriotic do-gooder? Well thanks to Chris Evans' performance and a script that has fun with the material, Captain America ends up being a superhero movie full of fun and excitement, even if it doesn't quite overcome all of its obstacles. The movie's strongest element is its pacing. The screenwriters smartly focus the movie's running time on how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America which is the most interesting part of the story. When it comes to the development of the romance between Rogers and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Captain America's mission to take down the Red Skull, the movie breezes on through like a WWII highlight reel. There is a more drawn out action scene where Captain America has to rescue Allied prisoners, but the filmmakers seem to realize that once you see Captain America take down one group of Hydra soldiers, you don't really need to see it again. The movie does get a little too cheesy for its own good, but unlike "Green Lantern," the cheesiness only hits for brief stints, and I mean come on, it's Captain America. That's practically a recipe for cheese right there. The only real problem "Captain America" faces is its less than fascinating hero. He's so purely good that every choice he makes turns out to be a predictable one. Like I said before, the filmmakers handle him well, but there's only so much you can do with the character.… Expand

I'm sure the regular followers of my blog are shocked to see that I gave a superhero/comic book movie a perfect rating. It is a well known fact, that while I'm a Science Fiction fanatic, I hate superheroes and comics. It is a well known fact, that while I'm a Science Fiction fanatic, I hate superheroes and comics. I wanted to see Captain America though, because I'm fascinated by the Avengers. I really can't see how all those big stars are going to work together, so I wanted to see all the films leading up to the Avengers, so I could follow along. Tommy Lee Jones, one of my favorite actors of all time, is one of the stars of this film, and I know he won't sign on to do just anything, so I knew that Captain America would at the very least be watchable. The more and more I got into Captain America, the most surprised I was by it's realism and honesty, it's not just the story of another superhero and how he's going to fit into the Avengers, it's the story of a very likeable character who wants to be something more than he is. I also loved the fact that this film took place in the 1940's as opposed to the modern era, because it gave a uniqueness to the story. I didn't feel like I was watching another Superman or Batman type of movie, I was really seeing something unique. The cast was fantastic, Chris Evans in particular, I don't know where the people who do the casting for these movies keep finding these guys, but each newcomer is better than the last. Captain America is unique and doesn't feel like a superhero out of some comic book. Comics are often based in extreme fantasy and appeal to those who want to escape their reality. Captain America was different though as he choses not to runaway, but to continually better himself, making him a uniquely remarkable character and it's those qualities that helped make a unique and remarkable film.… Expand

i went to this at the packed midnight premiere. it was mostly loud teenagers and young 20 somethings yelling across the aisles, so i was worried about how they were going to act when the film began. luckily they were quiet. and luckily thei went to this at the packed midnight premiere. it was mostly loud teenagers and young 20 somethings yelling across the aisles, so i was worried about how they were going to act when the film began. luckily they were quiet. and luckily the film met my expectations. like you may have guessed the film was as fun and entertaining as the other marvel films, but this one, being mostly set in 1940's WWII really had the nostalgic feel. the warm lighting and the army consisting of the older technology was really authentic. the film was good, just good. i liked most of it and i knew i wasn't going to be blown away or anything. the one thing i didn't enjoy was a five minute segment where the captain was dressed up selling war bonds, it was just cheesy and i guess it was made to be that way. overall i say it wasn't as good as the first iron man, but so much better than thor, which i loathed. and the clip at the end of the credits was worth admition by itself. 3/5 stars… Expand

Chris Evans does a great job of portraying Marvel's first fictional superhero/Steve Rogers. Plot: Steve Rogers is an American citizen within the year 1942 during WW2. He is dedicated to serving his country yet doesn't have the right physical build to enlist as an American soldier. When Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci) realizes that he is dedicated to his country he gives him a chance and changes his life forever when he gives him the chance to participate in his super soldier program. However, while Dr. Eskine was in Germany perfecting his super soldier serum, Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving), the leader of Hydra, a subdivsion of Hitler's army; becomes interested and forcefully injects himself with it becoming the unnaturally strong, and evil Red Skull. Schmidt also finds the tesseract, a blue glowing cube capable of unlimited energy. Schmidt uses this to evolve his weapons at an unreasonable rate posing bigger threats throughout the war. As Rogers becomes Captain America, he sets out on a campaign to end Schmidt's reign of terror as part of his duty as an American soldier. Opinion: believalbly set in WW2 with a great blend of fiction throughout reminds the world how terrifying WW2 really was, and that hope could be found even in the darkest of times. Well done, I reccomend it for anyone involved in WW2 and for those patriotic to America, I also reccomend it for anyone who wants to introduce themselves to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.… Expand

The plot can can go fast, and very humble that takes some of the climax of it, but in the end it draws the conclusion that is satisfactory to both the older fans, and for the casual and makes a good ground for The Avengers.

I don't like Cap in comics but I enjoyed this movie after the first act. It has nice cinematography, fast action and the right actors for the hero and his antagonist. Just don't expect something like Spiderman or Thor. argonautis.eu

Oh my god, the acting is so incredible, especially by Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving. They are all stunning to see in action! Captain America: The First Avenger truly is cool and groovy to watch, and the action is amazing and highly enjoyable. The CGI are incredible, even thought there are some details in the film that don’t look real at all. The film overall is highly unique and the story is magnificent, but there are some illogical and stupid decisions by some of the individuals in the film, which made it weird sometimes.

The things that bothers me most about this movie is the silly events in the film, such as the patriotism. It just ruined the film so much. Another thing is that there happens so much more in the second part of the film, so the first half felt a bit more boring than the last. So yes, there are some negative aspects about this film, but it's still enjoyable, and I forgot no mention the soundtrack, so stunning!

An entertaining, but silly film.

"Captain America: The First Avenger" is an MCU film that isn't as remembered these days. Considering how many characters there are in the film series, this along with Thor is one of the weaker entries. However despite it's pacing flaws and odd narrative choices (and wasted of red skull) the heart is there. It also is extremely patriotic and is like, "'Merica! **** yeah!" which fits the movie perfectly. I mean for gods sake he's CAPTAIN AMERICA. The action was pretty nice but that was my biggest disappointment. The movie just rushes through most of the action, treating it almost like a montage, except for a couple of moments. I personally think they should have made this movie like Tim Burton's Batman, where you find out Cap's past in flashbacks. That way they could cut, like, 25 minutes from this movie and replace it with more dynamic action. Maybe something like Cap running 469 yards to the Red Skull while simultaneously demobilizing 5 tanks, knocking down 800 solders with his shield, maybe even go downhill and surf on the shield, all while being fired at by 39 HYDRA airplanes. After seeing a skinny man in an armor suit flying around Manhattan in an exciting summer blockbuster, this is just what I needed. An old-fashioned super-hero movie related to Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately I couldn’t see “The Incredible Hulk” due to some streaming problems, but I got to see Captain America kicking ass in his own right, throwing the shield like a f*cking boomerang. Yeah, that never gets old. While the previous MCU movie was more consistent and entertaining, “Captain America: The First Avenger” still provides well-choreographed fights sequences and a solid story that connects perfectly into Marvel Universe.

At the outset of World War II, Steve Rogers wants nothing more than to join the army. The only problem is that he can't pass the physical. He's tried several times under different names without success. Dr. Abraham Erskine notes his eagerness and recruits him for an experimental project. Rogers is soon transformed, both mentally and physically, into a super soldier where he eventually faces off against the Nazi organization Hydra and its head, known as Red Skull.

The performances are very good. Chris Evans makes a good Captain America. I generally don’t like the character that much, but I must say, Chris fits the role. The one thing that bugs me is that they made him into a CGI creepy-looking kid without even attempting to work a little bit more. Seriously, why did he look so skinny? Just sayin…

But when he transforms himself into a muscular super soldier, things get really nasty. He’s faster, stronger and more intimidating than ever before. The action scenes are very well done, just like in “Iron Man”. No shaky cameras or constantly zoom-in. The most impressive action sequence in this movie is gotta be the chase sequence, where Steve jumps from one car to another and uses a door to block bullets (Oh about that, the door actually has a star in the middle, to resemble Captain America’s classic shield). Ah, classic! His suit looks kind of silly but I guess that’s part of the movie’s charm. After all, this is the 40s, right? The film also features some nice easter eggs and references that we’ll lead us to the Avengers like for example, the Tesseract. This plot device actually appears in The Avengers and it’s used as a portal or some sort of it. Sometimes the movie feels like it only exists just to set up The Avengers, but then the story comes in and that feeling just disappears.

Hugo Weaving as Red Skull is rather good. He really does a nice portrayal of his character, especially when he’s delivering quotable lines like “Hail Hydra!” or when he’s fighting with Captain America. Last time I saw him was in Transformers movies and the Matrix trilogy, which were meh… but whatever. He’s still a great actor.

One of the main problems with the movie is that it lacks originality. Mainly because some clichés peek in the script itself and prevents Joe Johnston (Director of this film) from providing new and interesting ideas to its formula. Not only that, but sometimes the story feels so dumb. However, Chris Evan makes up for that, yeah the guy knows how to act. Some actors have the balls to show how hammy is their acting. A good example of that is “Karate Kid, Part III” where the cast seems bored and seems understanding that they are indeed, overacting. But Evan, he knows how to act moderately. What I’m trying to say is that Marvel has chosen one of the best cast ever. First Robert Downey, now Chris…. It’s perfect.

Final Score to Captain America: The First Avenger: 7/10. Like Rotten Tomatoes stated, this is a solidly old-fashioned summer blockbuster that understands one of the oldest Marvel’s heroes and offers a fun story and nice performances from its main lead, even if sometimes feels like a big set-up for The Avengers. This movie is what I consider an apology from the god-awful, completely forgettable 1990’s film Captain America (That movie was just plain bad). I feel happy for watching this film and I can’t wait to do a review of the next one: Iron Man 2 (2010).… Expand

After watching Agent Carter, I decided to see Captain America: The First Avenger for the first time. It’s probably one the best Marvel Cinematic Universe movies so far.

The movie was excellent from start to finish. The direction and the cinematography makes this movie really set in the 40s and I never thought I would enjoy a enjoy a movie that is set in the 40s just like I never I would enjoy Agent Carter.

This movie is a really good origin movie about Steve Rogers and his duty as Captain America and after seeing this, I now care more about Captain America.

The writing was excellent and organic and it also sets up on what to expect on The Avengers (which I watched anyway) and the future of Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The cast performances in this movie were excellent. I would highlight Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan and even though he has a small screen time, Dominic Cooper as the best actors in this movie.

The best part of this movie was the relationship between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter. Their relationship was well-developed and their chemistry is amazing. I also liked how their relationship affects some parts of the future of Marvel Cinematic Universe,. It’s like their relationship is important to the universe and it still is today.

Watching Captain America: The First Avenger is such a great first-time experience all thanks to great direction, cinematography, writing and cast performances. This movie now makes me care about Captain America and I can’t wait to see The Winter Solider and change my opinion about it since I didn’t enjoy it as much as my friends did.… Expand

They put a lot of effort into the characters, their development and interactions atop of great action scenes. I was amazed how well the characters work and feel natural. Everyone can identify with Steve Rogers who has the hearth and soul of a true hero but is physically not strong enough to make a difference or be even drafted into the army in World War 2. We all have the same spirit in us in wanting to create a better world and fighting for the values we believe in but can often even make a small change in the world. Captain America or better said Steve Rogers is a paragon of all what we want to be but also a human character not that larger than we could be. He still is not perfect and struggles but at the end of the day he endures it and stands up for what is right even when he would be alone. It is no wonder why he is the leader of the Avengers in the comics even when he his much outclassed in terms of strength or super human abilities. He is the hearth and soul of the team and the moral compass. Because of this he is respected and no one questions his leadership or capability (He is also a capable fighter, a clever and experienced leader by the way but this was not the point here). Back to the movie: The story itself tells how the fragile and weak bodied Steve Rogers became Captain America the first superhero and a legend. Like I already said everything is believable, enjoyable and immersive. You see the struggles, emotions and motives of the characters. I would say it is a fine example of the “Show not tell” rule for movies. The hardest battles Steve has to fight are not against the Nazis and hose are hard too. He has to prove himself against the odds, expectations and prejudice. Even as Captain America the struggles continue. Of cause there is good action too, a truly evil antagonist and dangerous schemes. These add to the enjoyment of the movie. The characters are the greatest asset of the movie. The Marvel cinematic universe performed incredibly well with their superheros. They gave us actors that became the definite incarnations for their characters where each new incarnation will be compared to. Believe it or not Chris Evans was doubted back then as he was the Human Torch in the two Fantastic 4 movies and fans feared he was not up to the task. Today this is unbelievable as he simply is Captain America. There is no valid criticism for his performance and he fully delivers. As a sidenote the MCU redemed also a second human torch actor with Michael B. Jordan. Then we have Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter who is equally good and the hidden star of the movie. Today's movies fail to show what a strong female character is and feature blank and uninteresting Mary Sue types. She is truly excellent as character and role model. Now we have the excellent Colonel Chester Philips played by Tommy Lee Jones. He is the archetype of the grumpy hard as iron officer. He is so natural and believable that you think he was that character his whole life. For the rest we got a good Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt who is not well enough flashed out but works, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark who delivers and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barns who can shine in his shorter screentime. Special praise for Stanley Tucci who probably delivers the best performance and Toby Jones who is a truly ambivalent character. In general we have an awesome cast that enhance the movie and work well. As per MCU standards the visuals and special effects are top notch. You do not doubt anything and this is always a plus in fantasy, science fiction and superhero movies. The soundtrack is also really good and this too is never an issue in the MCU. Overall this was remarkably well done and cemented the success of phase 1. It is still good and worth watching as are all the other Captain America movies too.… Expand

I love superhero movies when they are done right, and Captain America is one of the better ones I've seen recently and a big improvement over the 1990 film. Is it perfect? No. Entertaining? Is it perfect? No. Entertaining? Yes, I think so. It is a very well made and efficiently directed film, with wonderful costumes, effects and settings and the cinematography and editing also impress. The music is rousing, and I just love Star Spangled Man, one of Alan Menken's best songs in my opinion. The script is witty and smart. Cheesy also? Perhaps but in an endearing sort of way. The story has a strong start, but loses its way to sluggish pacing and clichés in the final act. The characters are clichéd too in a sense but like the actors are engaging. Chris Evans is perfect in the title role, and he is joined by sassy Hayley Atwell and a wonderfully gruff Tommy Lee Jones. Hugo Weaving wasn't quite there for me, he is a great actor and he is charismatic and menacing, but his accent is inconsistent and the character could have been delved into more. So I take a chance to watch this movie, and I have to say that this movie was very good with huge CG effects with lots of pulp descent action film. The CG effects are pretty amazing that sometimes it could be handy like creating worlds with atmosphere, instead watching CGI in people on their faces. The actor who played Captain America (Chris Evans) was very good and that's a perfect choice for the superhero. The characters are well acted and I enjoy watching that villain named Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) was dark and very cruelty that he did best villain as Agent Smith in The Matrix Trilogy. The background is neat and the visual looks amazing, of course that I didn't see it in 3D, but I recommend that see it in 2D if you can. Captain America is a solid summer blockbuster hit for the best comic book movie that could attach to my top of X-Men: First Class and more changeling than Transformers 3 that it didn't look too good (of course it stinks!), but very good.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You got Chris Evans and Haley Atwell with charm that exceeds most of the faults of the actual movie, and also surpasses the problems of the weak use of the main antagonist. I am glad that the story of Cap gets better and better with the movies

The movie has a moment towards the end, that really sells the whole movie, and makes it profoundly tragic. Spoiler: Cap gets frozen in ice for more than half a century. He has found love, and has to let it go for the good of the country and the whole world. It is so well made, and so emotional and becomes a big point in the movies to come, so basically everything else that is made poorly in the movie doesn't matter. There are movies that are okay, are great, but do not have an emotional connection to the viewer, and you just have to go through it and think "yeah okay, it was produced well, they performed well". This movie makes the connection, and that is more important than anything.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was also worried about how the Captain America movie would turn out since his previous film was very lack luster. Fortunatey this film exceeded my expectations. This is set in the time of World War Two when America is trying to fight a sub operation of Nazis called Hydras and only Captain America can stop them. The origin in the comics lacked any kind of emotional impact but that has been fixed with the film rendition with Captain America played by Chris Evans. He adds a sense of humanity to the good Captain which was lacking in the comics and he is the perfect representation of the American Ideals. The beginning when Steve Rogers was a weakling gave way to some impressive computer effects. As is typical of a Marvel production, the strongest point is the interactions with the characters especially his relationship with Agent Carter and Bucky Barnes. Hugo Weaving plays a great rendition of the Red Skull as once again he represents the hero's polar opposite. It is a battle against Allies freedom vs Axis tyranny. Those who are history buffs might be disappointed since it barely talks about the politics of the war but it is really a summer block buster which was meant to be a fun time. This is not "Saving Private Ryan" here. The film has some impressive action scenes and it even plays around with the idea of using Captain America as a tool of propaganda who evolves into the war hero he was meant to be.The best scene in the film though was the ending after Captain America was wakes up after being frozen in ice. The way the sequence was shot with long takes, the 360 spin, and some medium close ups conveys a sense of loss when he realizes that he is no longer in his time. This film is definitely worth checking out.… Expand

In this movie Captain America turns from an instrument of american propaganda (like in the original WW2-era comics) into a real hero, fighting those who want to enslave humanity. The plot slowly builds up a poor young man's story trying to make a difference, but loses its momentum in the middle with the whole dancing show where Captain America is reduced to a costumed clown. But when Steve Rogers finally goes into his first battle, that's when the movie really kicks off, with the Allied Forces slowly and steadily defeating the paranoid HYDRA. The end is heartwrenching, with Rogers sacrificing himself, falling into a coma and awakening into a different world in the 21st century, having lost everybody he knew from the 1940s. He ultimately joins SHIELD and the Avengers. This movie features most of Captain America's life story, and the director handled this almost perfectly.… Expand

It’s also refreshing to see a weak character at the beginning like this evolve into a man that he looks like he was really destined to be, and that kind of technique, where the hero starts off weak, works well in origin style films. Hugo Weaving put on a good villainous performance but I just wish his character had a little more development and more purpose in his actions as the Hydra leader. The WW2 setting is shown brilliantly in this film, and even though it can be slightly clichéd at times, it’s a good type of cliché, comic book film cliché. This film overall works great in the origin story department, but the thing with these films is that they are forced to introduce the character and that can sometimes limit where the story branches. So all in all, this film is made purposely for the introduction of the first avenger, to set up many greater stories to come. I’m going to give Captain America, The First Avenger an 86%… Expand

Peggy Carter was perfectly cast and viewers could sense great romantic tension on screen. This movie is tied with Iron Man I for the best movie(s) in Phase One of the MCU. Until a scientist sees him and recruits him to try out for a special training program to create a super soldier.

WHAT I LIKED

The Marvel universe sticks pretty close to classic script with him being given a serum that jacks his body into super muscle mode. He's already brave and smart, so it would seem like a no-brainer to send him overseas? But the guy in charge of his training doesn't want him, he's just one man, so Rogers ends up doing public relations back home. And he is quite shocked that the men overseas don't react as positively when they see him as the crowds back home. I really enjoyed the way they handle the first battle scene for him, basically him figuring things out as he goes, a far cry from his battle-hardened approaches later.

I even liked his interactions with Agent Carter. I had thought it would be more subtle than it was, and I hoped we'd see a bit more of her operating on her own (after all, they gave her character a whole series on TV!), but she was second fiddle to the hero.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

The challenge with a lot of American movies of the war is that it is as if they are the only actors in the war, no allies, just them, and that level of nationalistic narrowmindedness is a bit grating. That may be a small gripe when the show is called CAPTAIN AMERICA, not CAPTAIN OF WORKING WITH ALLIES, but still, it's annoying. I also was disappointed there wasn't a lot more on Red Skull. His history, his abilities, other pursuits, all of it was left basically unreferenced. Sure, some of it shows up elsewhere in the Marvel universe, but a bit more crosswalk would have been nice. I felt he really wasn't that well-fleshed out as the uber villain he could have been.

The First Avenger takes the Marvel Cinematic Universe back to World War II, and introduces us to the good-hearted, but less-than-physically-imposing Steve Rogers, who wants nothing more than to do his part and help with the war effort.The First Avenger takes the Marvel Cinematic Universe back to World War II, and introduces us to the good-hearted, but less-than-physically-imposing Steve Rogers, who wants nothing more than to do his part and help with the war effort. Thankfully, a new government program capable of creating "super soldiers" gives him the opportunity to do so.

Unfortunately, even after Steve gets a physical upgrade, he's treated more like a propaganda-spouting mascot for the war effort than he is like a soldier making a genuine difference. Eventually, it gets to the point where he feels the need to take things into his own hands, as increasingly strange and worrisome events begin to take place.

Simply put, this movie is a delight. It suffers from some third act pacing issues, similar to Marvel Studios' other efforts, but it's full of wonderful performances, and is bursting at the seams with heart. The pure sense of hope and optimism that the film exudes makes up for many of its shortcomings. By the end, you will have felt so many different emotions, and will feel the need to put more good into the world.… Expand

It's kinda hard, when watching Captain America, to forget that it's intended mostly as a prelude to the far superior The Avengers; Captain America exists mostly to introduce the character and do away with his origin story. The sub-header "The First Avenger" certainly doesn't help to relieve the feeling that this film just wasn't meant to stand in its own right.

But surprisingly enough, director Joe Johnston managed to turn a sparse script about an anachronistic and old-fashioned character into a well-paced, even entertaining film. It's not as entertaining or as energetic as The Avengers or the Iron Man movies; Captain America's style is in accordance with its World War II setting. Johnston embraces the anachronistic idealism and patriotism of the character, but never to the point that it feels camp. The film feels like it takes place in the 40's, but it doesn't feel like a pastiche or a period piece, which would have made the transition into The Avengers jarring and painful. It feels like it's part of the Marvel universe, but it also has its own unique feel (something which Thor and The Incredible Hulk, sadly, cannot say).

It's still not quite a stand-alone film - not like Iron Man. It shows more than any other Marvel film so far the flaws in creating this elaborate shared universe of characters. It's especially clear in the under-utilization of the villain character, the Red Skull, who promises to be an interesting and mysterious character but gets far too little screen-time, which is all spent on the good Captain's origin story. That story leaves very little room for the film to have any of its own plot. But it has its own atmosphere, it has heart and a sense of humor and an anachronistic, idealistic but very likable hero.… Expand
