Despite the fact that I stil don't get how a basic LGBT love story was THAT overhyped but the story was cool. My favorite things about this movie though were the shots and the acting, the actors are wonderful and so talented, Timothée Chalamet is a pure diamond, and the very last scene where he stares at the fire is so good, I was able to perfectly capture the emotions he was trying to convey, I liked it a lot. a visual feast stacked with cinematography for the ages. Yes it can sometimes play as a ode to Italy with how often it lingers on landscape an architectural shots but it never does so without contributing well to the stories tone.

an ephemeral love story way too many lgbtqia+ youths can relate to ,falling for an older man, deifying that romance only to be abandoned once the significant other leaves for more ''realistic ''prospects post statutory exploitation. those who critique this film for glorifying pedophilia are unaware of movies being a vehicle for real story's and that not every story has o be attached to an agenda in fact i argue if any agenda is attached it's cautionary and very aware of the lovers age difference. firstly timothy's portrayal is purposefully youthful, he is a boyish man naturally and in the presence of Armie Hammer seems demur .i see his story as a honest telling of a love story one that is one sided .i do not think elio's love is shared by Oliver who's mostly flattered and lustful. Its a dark romance and once it's viewed as one he movie is even more impressive as i begin o see the bright Italian setting reminiscent of old co-existing with the new.

it was an enjoyable movie that is quiet dense to to receive a rewatch.

The story takes place in Italy in the 80's, and this movie lives up and respects that time period with style and respect. Old Alfa Romero's and Fiats fill the streets, bars packed with town people drinking and playing cards on the corner chain-smoking packs of cigarettes. The director had a clear, vivid vision for this film and it shows masterfully on-screen. I haven't seen chemistry like this in so long. Timonthée and Armie were great together. Also, I want to also praise Michael Stuhlbarg, his monologue delivery at the end was so on point that watching the film in theater for the first time brought tears to my eyes. I watched the film, then read the book and I can say with honesty that it respects the source material. Great film! Expand

This belongs to that last lucky category. Adapting Aciman's words is not easy, I would say that it would be an unfilmable material, and not precisely in visual terms, it's actually the narrative and emotional weight that requires a reliable adaptation. "Eight White Nights" American writer has shown a particular delicacy describing the situations on paper, uses language and technique in a compact and naturally functional way, his narrations seem to breathe life in images, in real images. That's why James Ivory's screenplay deserves gold recognition, because, with the duty to be up to the vision of the author, the level of demand was considerably further, however, there was no risk whatsoever here. Based on a customary but effective mold, the plot has a traditional structure until the third act, because the resolution seems to get us back, emerging more problems, knowing such difficulties are mere vehicles used by the author to represent an irrefutable truth: real life isn't a fairy tale and will never be; at least, it was for half an hour. Separate mention must be made of certain scenes that border on the memorable. The pictures get a solid position in the story, thus, the conception and the approach of those moments play a vital role in different but powerful ways. From vitality-radiating lines to power-expelling dialogues, each moment builds one more pillar in the plot, no matter how insignificant may seem — there's a lot for the ordinary spectator surely, — they keep an intrinsic meaning correlated with the characters. The performances are, beforehand, a foretold delight. Timothée Chalamet is off the charts as Eliot, the sincerity and fidelity that this young actor— who participates in two of the films nominated in the Academy Awards this year —imbues into the extracted-from-the-book character are overwhelming, establishing himself as the promising young of the moment, since with that final scene he ratifies a commendable tour de force. There is no doubt that the film wouldn't be the same without his simplicity and natural charisma, what is more, it'd be nothing because Chalamet is the whole film, his interpretation steals all the attention, even the praises that were directed towards enormous — figurative and literally — Armie Hammer. It seems that the actor has taken on a big challenge with Oliver, one that means transmute himself internally with sensitivity and moral complexity. It's worth mentioning the fascinating work of the protagonist's parents, Amira Casar and Michael Stuhlbarg, especially the father's due to his tearful monologue, brimming with understanding and power, he expresses and encloses unusual skills.

Another fundamental cornerstone, truly fundamental is called Luca Guadagnino. We know that the Sicilian filmmaker is prone to tales of love, words like 'frivolous' or 'plastic' will never be used as adjectives to describe his stories. The filmmaker's sensibility and inscrutability make the film an irreplaceable, pessimistic and wonderful, deep and amusing, reflective and peculiar time; the best film of the director and genre in recent years, no doubt about it.

Visually, it's not an easy film, far less exhaustive, the true beauty is in the lack of artificiality, everything is emphatically vivacious, coherent with the beauty of the writing, proposing angles and constant soft focuses to set in the focal spot it needs, a skillfully functional strategy; likewise, it represents that intimate and relaxed aura of the book, altering minimally the contents from this one. Personally, "Call Me by Your Name" could be the "Brokeback Mountain" for a new generation and not for its realistic approach to the portrait of virility or the importance of any person's feelings, but by the vastness of messages (truths) that a simply deep story can say, a change, that's what it wants. "Call Me by Your Name" by Luca Guadagnino invigorates again homosexual-love stories in cinema by means of a staggering coming-of-age, led by a terrifying interpretation of Timothée Chalamet and a shrewd and very personal eye of a director who fortifies his filmography, while it's one of the most faithful and emotionally charged film adaptations of the last century, proving that even if you have a pre-established foundation, originality, passion and creativity in the artistic field are vital for a motion picture which reaches a whole new level of emotional power, here, an example. Getting rid of taboos, this film is one of the most human, magnetic and heartfelt movies about teenagers and love I have seen in my short life, one that leaves opportunities for more bold and talented writers, actors, directors or any kind of artists to raise their hands and say: Here I am and this is my story.

This was a difficult one to review. While I was watching it, at times I wondered "why did this movie get so much praise?"

Then, as I got to the end, I started to understand. Finally, over the next couple days I couldn't stop thinking about this movie. The acting, the emotions, the way it seemed to simultaneously and perfectly capture the essence of Italy and the essence of the 80's. I think the first hour could have been done differently and better, but overall it's one of the best movies I've seen recent years.

I was just disappointed I suppose. I definitely did not despise the film as it had many good points to balance out the bad but I thought I'd be tossing up between a 9 or 10, not a 6 or 7. I needed to let my feelings out about this movie so here I am making this mess of a review. When I came across the reviews, I was not surprised that the critics score surpassed the audience's score. This brings me to the problem of the film. The idealism of aesthetics over plot. Recently, films that could not give less of a **** about cinematography and shot composition but devoted more time to create a more invested plot received more praise from the audience than critics. This is because critics are taught to give great consideration to the movie's aesthetics whilst the average viewer wouldn't care as much. Film is a form of storytelling, and yes you need a good way of telling it by using aesthetics but the STORY part of the word should be more important. This film is definitely aesthetics over plot which is a concept I just do not agree with. The shot composition was interesting, the cinematography was beautiful, the landscapes were serene and the music was pretty but the film had unused potential for more developed plot, relationships, complications and characters.
Plot: So a seventeen year old goes to Italy for a holiday and stays with his family and an apprentice of his father. The boy who actually has a girlfriend at the time falls in love with him but he has to leave. It's decent but possibly too minimalistic. Sure, there are minor details and sub plots here and there but none of them equate to much. Relationships: The elephant in the room is now being addressed. The paedophilia. I tried to overlook it but it was a bit difficult when the actors have a ten year age gap and the protagonist is 17 and looks possibly younger. Their chemistry and awakening of love is emotional and believable but they still don't mature or change a huge lot as characters during their relationship.
Complications: Obviously being in the LGBT community can be a struggle and discovering your sexual identity at a young age can be difficult and confusing. But I feel if the two lovers were ostracised and mistreated about it, as what can happen in society, the movie would have more of a plot and more important messages and themes. But every one in the film seems to be fine with it. The father is beyond happy for his son and the girlfriend instantly forgives him for cheating on her. Characters: I think all the actors did great jobs in this film but the characters were often too pretentious and precocious. I understand that they were rich and intelligent but sometimes it got annoying. Overall a beautiful film but one that still had potential for more. To directors, producers and everyone else, please remember plot over aesthetics!

While I do understand the concern about the age gap and the double standard surrounding it, I have a firm belief that this movie is not about that. For those complaining that it is 'slow' or boring, you need to understand how that was a very intentional decision. Most of us viewers know what will eventually happen with Elio and Oliver, so the scenes before this are full of tension in such a beautiful way. We're left to be utterly amazed by what we are watching. Honestly, if this movie took place in a random American city I don't think I would love it so much. The stills put me in a trance, every colour choice honestly kept me in awe the entire film, and the soundtrack is the best I've heard in a long time. The trance was finally broken when Elio and Oliver finally got together, and the tension made it even better. It was real, and the incredible performances by both Armie and Timothee to the life-changing voice of Sufjan Stevens, what more do you want? It's been a year and I haven't stopped thinking about it. I loved the one lens decision by the filmmakers, as it kept me in the story and I didn't even feel like I was watching a movie. Life changing. I completely recommend to anyone who wants to fall in love with a story and who has enough money to immediately fly to Italy cuz you'll want to :) Expand

Timothee Chalamet gives one of the best performances I've ever seen and he works wonderfully beside Armie Hammer. I was never a big fan of Armie, but after seeing him in this I have much more respect for him. I'd never heard of Luca Guadagnino prior to watching this, but now I'd consider him one of the best filmmakers just because of this one masterwork. A lot of people won't understand why I love this so much, it's slow, it's long and there's not a lot of dialogue, but that's exactly why it's so damn good. It's slow because it's taking it's time developing the romance the fires up between the two characters, it's long because you need time to take it all in, and there's not a lot of dialogue because who needs words when you have incredible performances, and an extremely talented director. The cinematography in this film is some of the best I've ever seen, the location in which this film takes place is glorious and I'm honored to say I've been there. Call Me By Your Name is my favorite movie and Timothee Chalamet is now one of my favorite actors. This movie isn't for everybody, but it certainly is for me. Expand

The setting is lovely - it's only described as 'somewhere in Northern Italy' and there's some relatively thoughtful dialogue present, although there are some scenes when the characters don't talk too often. I also enjoyed the classical/instrumental music often played in the background, which gives it a somewhat dream-like/floaty feel or sense. I particularly liked the light piano tunes, which had a bit of an ethereal sense to them at times. The characters seem very thoughtful and it's quite an atmospheric film. I would recommend it, yes. The movie is breath takeningly gorgeous with it's scenes in northern Italy. The story line grabs your heart, and when it breaks it, all you can do is thank it, because you will never regret watching this movie. The story shows raw emotion, and the acting of both Timothée Chalamet and Archie Hammer is surreal, and both the music and scenes will be something you remember for the rest of your lives. Expand

This movie broke me into pieces. It left me depressed for days afterwards. I found myself going back to the ending and balling my eyes out. Soundtrack, cinematography, acting and writing are all perfection. A beautiful must-watch.

Call Me By Your Name bored me too much at first that's why it doesn't have a 10 but it manages to be so magical and so special in its script and performances that the mystery of love manages to be discovered

One rare movie that manages to be better than the novel it's adapted from. Surely worthy of your time.

n instant modern classic. Beautiful perception of first love and queer sexual awakening, married perfectly to the sensual Mediterranean summer. Hope this gets all the awards it deserves.

Perfect portrayal of that one summer that you never forget. This movie does what it sets out to do very well. Besides Perks Of Being A Wallflower probably the best coming of age movie I can remember.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is an incredible adaptation of a novel with very good performances, all the aesthetics in this film seem phenomenal to me. At first it's a bit boring, then the romance develops (the best part) and then it ends in a sad and melancholic way where you can feel the same emotions that Elio felt. It was a fleeting summer romance that was known all along that they weren't going to end up together, which makes it realistic and heartbreaking.
the only thing that bothers me is the age difference between oliver and elio, although I suppose that's more common than it seems.
