Something"By the Sea" is visually gorgeous and Angelina Jolie shows strong potential with some great directing moments, but the movie is just so sluggish and boring. The performances are solid, the writing is fine, it just doesn't work. Something feels off through the duration of the film, and increases as the film goes on. It's way too long, and would have benefited from cutting off at least 40 minutes. Expand

"By the Sea" é um filme confuso, inconsciente e aborrecido. O filme é visualmente bonito, porém, tem muitas falhas no que diz respeito à história e às personagens. Estava à espera de muito mais...

There is no doubt BY THE SEA is a tremendous effort by Angelina Jolie Pitt to make something visually beautiful. Unfortunately, her ambition and lackluster script leaves the film testing our patience and for little reward.

Vapid & narcissistic, By The Sea is 2 hours of Brangelina staring at the sea, drinking themselves silly and trying to find the desire within each other. Some campy acting, you might be in for a treat.

By The Sea is about a married couple who takes a vacation in France in the 1970s and find that their time in a sleepy seaside town, complete with a unique array of locals, strengthens their bond and reaffirms their marriage.

Through out my years reviewing movies on this site, I always avoid using words like "pretentious" or "too arty", as I normally don't think that. To me, if a film what's to tell it's story in a unique way with the power of art and visuals that's done well, then I don't think it's pretentious or too arty. Everyone has different taste and I know it's kind of beating a dead horse right now since I keep bringing that up, but I do that just to keep everyone in mind that my opinion and what I have to say for movies is just me. But today might change, as I watched a movie that I can look at and call it pretentious, overly doing it and lacks a purpose. By The Sea is an underwhelming arty mess that has a hidden message that's still unclear. The movie demands to be analysis.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt deliver decent performances and there were a few good shots that's nice to look at. But everything else felt force and while watching it I was kind of annoyed, because it has no weight to it when it came to the story and the character's deep motivation that came off sloppy. Jolie has a vision, I mean every director has a vision, but the must crushing and difficult thing is to bring that vision to the big screen. It isn't easy for some directors, because sometimes they can pull it off and sometimes don't; Jolie sadly falls into the "don't".

Overall By the Sea is a pretentious, underwhelming movie with a muddled story that tries so hard to have a meaning.

Had to watch this to see how the Brangelina miracle ended. Not well, had its moments but in the end fleeting.

They both had cliched problems and its like, if you're going to be all beautiful doing beautiful things in beautiful places next door to other beautiful people, then at least be somewhat self-aware. Like watch a movie, read some literature, develop some empathy, do something other than whine about your problems like no one else has ever had them before.

These vanity projects never really work out. They generate good press and all but was there every any true love involved? I'm just saying, we could have avoided all this if everyone involved would have seen this coming like the rest of us did. Things that are too good to be true, are, you know, exactly that. We watch movies, that's how we know.

A vacation, an inspiration for the writing and a complete makeover.

The fourth directional venture for Angelina Jolie, she also wrote it and her real life husband, Brad Pitt starred the screenspace with her in the lead character. This is a tale of a struggling writer who goes to a French seaside resort for an inspiration to write a new material. He takes his wife along and in the peaceful environment, seems they're doing well, until a newly married couple arrive for their honeymoon in their next door. All the complication surface and the old secrets are revealed, so that's how the film sets up and ends.

I don't know what's with Jolie lately, she's not doing many films as she was before. Maybe her parenting commitment took over her acting career. Good to see her back, but seeing this film and its story, I feel she's really suffering that I don't know what it is. Some day in the near future if someone makes a film about her, that will reveal this time of her life. Anyway, they both looked great on the screen, but very sad they are parting away.

This is not some awesome story with twist and turns, just a straightforward drama, mostly the midlife crises in a married life. So here the performances were top notch, other than that is the beautiful locations. It's a two hour long film, not everybody feel comfortable with that, because the pace was very slow and the story is not that interesting. Particularly this film is not for the youngsters, but that does not mean all the grown-up would enjoy it either. Only some people find it better and for me this is an okay film.

You look at viewer critiques of movies like this and you get furious at metacritic and imdb for allowing 20-year-old high-school dropouts onto their sites. This timeYou look at viewer critiques of movies like this and you get furious at metacritic and imdb for allowing 20-year-old high-school dropouts onto their sites. Why not invite Angela Merkel's one million refugees while they're at it? This time only the professionals seemed to get it: Jolie, who also wrote, has clearly tried to evoke an early 1970s European film, a marital drama set in that time period in Europe. For the most part she succeeds in setting the mood and slow pace, and it's pretty to look at in 1080p with the Mediterranean shore and all. We can make what we will of the couple's subsequent breakup in real life, but in any case the film is both too languid and sometimes overblown for the arc surprise. Expand
