What is going on with movie critics? The earlier parts are a little more interesting, but it loses any potential steam it had about a third of the way in, and then goes on for two more hours. There's one dramatic scene, which doesn't even tie into any kind of overarching plot or theme or development, and one decent performance (Hawke). The technical accomplishment of filming the same actors over 12 years has proved irrelevant, at least in this instance, so really the movie has nothing to offer at all. Expand

"Boyhood" 10 Scale Rating: 5.0 (Mediocre) ...

The Good: I have to admire the ambition. It takes a lot of guts and vision create a film piece by piece over a 12 year span and I have to give Linklater credit there. Overall, the film is well acted and the characters are at least somewhat interesting. Ethan Hawke turns in the best performance of the film and newcomer Ellar Coltrane improves drastically as the film progresses. At times, "Boyhood" starts to head down a very entertaining path and you can briefly (albeit very briefly) see why it was nominated for Best Picture.

The Bad: But then, once it heads down that path, it does an about face. Time suddenly passes in the film and the previous storyline is an afterthought. At 2:45 the film is also extremely long and it feels it. There are far too many gaps where nothing happens and you feel like you're just watching the life of a regular every day family. Maybe that is the point, but it doesn't make for a very compelling film. Slow moving and with a highly unsatisfactory ending, "Boyhood" might be among the most overrated films of all time.

Yes, the 12 years filming span is an interesting idea, but that's it. There is really nothing particularly appealing about this movie, no drama, no plot; I actually caught myself several times while watching wanting SOMETHING to happen in the scenes that looked perfectly okay, but it never did, every scene in the movie remained as normal and peaceful as it could. Also, 2 hours would have been more than enough for this kind of movie. In summary, it is worth watching as a sort of cinema experiment, but nothing more than that. Expand

Patricia Arquette nailed it being a Mom and portraying her emotions with each difficult moment in being a Mom! A nice journey is to be had by all, as we all have had journey's of our own. We all have friends growing up who we drift apart from. Over the course of this movie, I went from really enjoying spending time with young Mason, to cringing while watching an older Mason who I could never even stand to be in a room with.

Not everyone will have this reaction, but this guy's personality when he gets older is insufferable to the point that I wish I could slap him. As a boy, his experiences are some that any boy/man could relate to. As a young adult, he becomes smug and whiney and almost regressed to a teenage state.

That being said, this was a very ambitious project by Linklater with a lot of really great material early on, and a couple of great performances by Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke. During the actual "Boyhood" segment of the movie, I felt like I could watch it all day. From high school on I continued watching because I felt I had to having invested so much time in it.

If this movie were to be made within a 1 or 2 year span I truthfully can say it would not have the same impact that it does. A nostalgia filled film following a young boy and his journey through boyhood. Engaging to the current teenage generation and empathetically moving to the generations before us that understand what it is like to be a parent and have your child's young years pass by quickly. The maturity and growth of the actors is both phenomenal and honest. It is a true film that manipulates our feelings of longing, love, and growing up. The amount of commitment to these roles and this movie is astonishing and awe-inspiring. Though not the most entertaining of films, it does seem to be one of the most intriguing of films ever made. It is a nostalgic, emotional ride that takes you through life's wonders of growing up: awkwardness, insecurity, first love, puberty, change, and becoming an independent being. All things we go through as a child and as a human being. So prepare yourself, for this honest, understanding, and emotionally driven film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very beautiful in its own way. I was able to identify myself with the main character. The movie told about real life and there wasn't too much drama or unexpected life changes. Because the same guy acted the main character for the whole movie, I kind of felt like I knew that guy and I felt little protection of the desire for him. The reason for giving this movie only 7 out of 10 is that it was a bit long and every now and then i felt myself little bored. Probably because I ate all the popcorn at the beginning of the movie lol. But overall, it was a nice package filled with dialogue and funny moments between family. The most memorable moments were the tent tours between father and son spiced with marshmallows and cream crackers. Expand

With that said, although I thought the movie was fantastic, it isn't for everyone. Some people may be put off by the film's run time, and it not having a traditional three act structure that most other critically acclaimed films have. This is a movie about a boy's life growing up, simple as that.

The acting and the dialogue felt extremely natural, and the film manages to showcase the beauty in he mundane. Some may say the film only gets praise because of its 12 year filming period, but truly, that's just one thing that made the film compelling to watch.

The film's concept is part of the appeal, and helps make the film feel more genuine.

All in all, Boyhood was a great film, possibly the best of 2014 in my opinion, although the Oscars would suggest otherwise.

One can find himself trapped within it, long after the movie has ended, because we all have had a moment that relates perfectly to us in the film. For me, it was the launch of the Harry Potter book, yes I was the one kid that staid in line for hours to get a copy of that book!
It deserved more than it has gotten in terms of awards, for it is, at the end of the day, a masterpiece that took 12 years in the making.

It's not the Hollywoodized mumbo jumbo that people fawn over as an escape from their stressful lives or failed dreams. This movie explores stressful lives and failed dreams, so don't watch it if you're out for an 'escape'. The acting was so real I have trouble convincing myself it's not a true story. It is a true story for so many families around the world. It just resonated so much with me. It's honest, heart wrenching, and real. That's why I loved it. Nothing's hyperbolized or detracted so that it'll be a Hollywood sensation. It's an honest look at a boy's life as he grows up in a less than ideal family situation. It explores what exactly life is, tackles questions like 'What's the point of it all?", and "Is there real magic, like Elves?". It pulled me in completely and by the end I felt like I never wanted it to stop. No movie has ever made me feel the way this one has. It's made me grateful and it's made me want to go out and make a difference in my own little way. Thank you to the actors, producers, and crew of this movie. Phenomenal and unforgettable, "Boyhood" is a film like no other, and makes it the best film of 2014.

Boyhood took 12 years to make, which makes the film so unique in many ways, this is a movie directed by Richard Linklater, and stars newcomer Ellar Coltrane, and supporting cast members like Patricia Arquette (who won the best supporting actress Oscar), Ethan Hawke (who was nominated for best supporting actor) and newcomer Lorelei Linklater.

Plot:
The film starts out with Mason Jr. laying down on the ground looking up to the sky, his mother Olivia picks him up from school. Mason Jr. overhears his parents arguing that following evening, he quickly learns that Olivia is moving he and his sister Samantha are moving to Houston so Olivia could attend the University of Houston. From there all the characters slowly age for 12 years, showing each character for approximately 15 minutes each age.

The film shows it had a lot of effort put into it, director Richard Linklater has shown us how childhood could be difficult and to show that it is important to keep up with life. Boyhood proves to be The Godfather of today's film industry, it is easily one of the most thought-out films to date.

Boyhood in my opinion is one of my favorite films of all time, there is always something good about the film, there has been no other film like this one. I very highly recommend watching this one to see how the main character grows up.

The father and daughter relationship. The mother and son relationship. The favoring of each respectively. The film has so many scenes where micro expression are present. For example: when the professor meets the child of his "favorite student" resulting in a quick micro expression of disappointment which can be seen when the camera shows his expression on the discovery that she is a mother. Since she is an attractive woman. Nonetheless the movie antagonizes everyday life situations, which helps in relating with the characters as well as seeing the plot. It's a movie about life and that life as a boy growing up to be his own identity. I would definitely recommend to any body interested in psychology, body language, and life and development. For a more intellectual audience. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The greatest achievement of "Boyhood" lies in its fundamental truth. Not a single moment of those 12 years, compressed into almost 3 hours, feels scripted or, worse, false. It is far more an act of biography that narrative film-making, reconciling the enormity of its scope with the searing intimacy of its storytelling focus.

The central performances - of Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke, Lorelei Linklater and Patricia Arquette - are
warm, empathetic and authentic. Coltrane, in particular, is a captivating presence in the titular role, and manages to transcend the role of an actor giving a performance, instead becoming more of an intimate acquaintance. The deft mix of the triumphs and pitfalls of his coming-of-age are heartfelt and deeply moving. One also cannot ignore Patricia Arquette's understated powerhouse as Coltrane's mother - she captures perfectly the struggles of single parenthood. I saw a lot of my own mother in her and the sacrifices and mistakes that she makes. Arquette provides the film's emotional centerpiece, delivering a wrenching soliloquy towards the end of the film on age and regret that may be one of the definitive film scenes of the decade.

Granted, this is not a perfect film - it lacks momentum, it meanders, it glosses over one or two points, it misses one or two thematic opportunities. But to fixate on those is to ignore the resounding success of Richard Linklater's profound ambition and the breathtaking connection this film makes with its audience and its deserved status as a benchmark in film history.

But it could just as well hold the name of another picture currently running in cinemas: Life Itself. That simple yet profound thing is what lies at the core of Richard Linklater’s unique 12-year-spanning story and makes it relatable for everyone, regardless of sex, age group, descent, social status, or character. Linklater lets his audience live through the fun and the pain, the love and the misery, and the excitement and the disappointment of his protagonist Mason with yet another wonderful screenplay in his repertoire and an unspectacular but still extraordinary way of directing. The highest Metascore on Metacritic history. A score of 100 out of 50 critics is the highest you could get. Boyhood may win #1 at Metacritic's King of Metascores, but I never enjoyed this movie that much. I liked it, but not loved it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Boyhood is one of the most interesting movies i have ever seen. Its very relatable to me because the movie follows a boy going through high school and so am I. Another way boyhood is more different and interesting from other movies is the way Richard Linklater chose to direct this movie over twelve years so they can have the same cast and show the actual actors aging and growing up. All in all it was a very enjoyable film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Boyhood is one of the best films I've ever seen. Boyhood is such a great film because it is very relatable to myself. The film follows a boy's life from childhood all the way through his high schools years and that is what I am going through myself. What makes this film so unique and different from other films, is that the director chose to film this movie over the course of 12 years. This allowed the film to be much more accurate in tracking the life of the main character, Mason. The way the director chose to shoot the film, made me realize how much effort and funds were put into this film, and that's why this film is so successful. Apart from those reasons, the film is just really enjoyable. It has a bit of everything. It has humor, romance, drama, and it also mixes in life lessons. Overall, this film is tremendous and I highly recommend watching it. Expand

Which is understandable, Boyhood is by no means a flawless films (as a LOT of critics claim it to be) but it doesnt deserve all of the immense hate people are giving it either. I'm neither a ''love-it'' or ''hate-it'' kind of guy, i thought it was a good movie that certainly has its moments but i also thought it was a movie that had so much potential and missed a lot of it.
Let's start with the cons of this movie, Boyhood is empty because it lacks content and form. It celebrates the ordinary and mediocrity instead of aiming at something extraordinary. Boyhood is not an entertaining film and the almost 3 hour runtime is probably to blame for it, it certainly has it's moment of wit and compassion but overall i would not call Boyhood an entertaining film, on top of that there isnt really a story, it's more like just the life of someone where things happen, and that's it. It doesnt have a solid premise either.
Next problem, there isnt a single character to whom you feel compassionate to, (except maybe Ethan Hawke's character, he is the stand out) and the film focuses on the life of Mason, a character that has absolutely no interesting characteristics whatsoever. Mason walks through this film as if he was in a coma or half asleep; he has no ambitions. At some point he gets his first kiss, gets interested in photography (the ultimate art form for unimaginative lazy people) during high school, goes to college at which point the film ends.
Before going in i knew this was going to be a movie about ordinary people, in ordinary situations in an ordinary life, which might turn people away from a movie like this very quickly, but not me since i'm a MASSIVE fan of Linklater's other work: The Before Trilogy, a trilogy where nothing happens and where the audience follows ordinary people living their ordinary lives. Sounds boring right? But it certainly isnt, the Before trilogy are all 3 such meticulous, astoundingly acted, brilliantly written pieces of cinema where Linklater celebrates the normality of people's lives instead of going for the flashy razzle dazzle. It sounds boring but it is so incredibly captivating, beautiful and brilliant. and since Boyhood was also about ordinary people i was expecting the same kind of brilliance Linklater had shown the world with the Before trilogy. Linklater is a master at making very uneventful but thought provoking movies, except this one isnt thought provoking.

Now we have the cons out of the way, what are the pros about this 3 hour movie.
The performances are good, with Ethan Hawke as the standout, there are quite some exceptional moments in this movie, but that's all they are, moments, which is a shame, too little to fill the 3 hours. Boyhood captures the normality of life perfectly, something Linklater is exceptional at, only he didn't make it interesting, which he so perfectly did in the Before Trilogy. The fact that it's shot over 12 years shows how ambitious Linklater is, and the fact that he made 8 movies in between those 12 years is quite an achievement too. For a movie like this to work perfectly it would need to have emotional depth throughout the film, Boyhood has that in certain moments, but definitely not throughout the film.

All in all, Boyhood is by no means a masterpiece or a flawless films, which is something critics claim, but it also isnt as terrible as lots of people make it out to be. Boyhood is a stellar cinematic achievement with certainly a lot of great moments, but in the end falls short of greatness by being just a little too structureless and empty.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really have no idea why everyone loves this movie. Don't get me wrong it's not awful but there's nothing that really comes in to full bloom- there's no theme, the writing is conversational, realistic but nothing earth shatteringly deep, visually it meanders, the actors only garner a couple of points because they did it for so long, but there was no outstanding performance. It seems more like a documentation of an average young kid in America- far from a audience enchanting story. Claps for Mason for his aggressive averageness. The one redeeming quality comes from Linklater's direction and overall vision for the story and how it sort of lives in this area of downright rejection of cliche and stories that are familiar and relatable. Anyway not bad, but I don't understand how anyone could watch it more than once. Expand

Films with such critical praise are usually fantastic. But that isn't the case with Boyhood.

Richard Linklater delivers a boring, gimmick of a movie with next to no redeeming qualities.

There's a lot of ham fisted scenes: such as the domestic abuse scene, which felt rushed and on the nose. As someone who's experienced this I can tell you that it's the most generic domestic violence ever put to film.

Another thing wrong with this film is how long and boring it is. The film has nothing that makes you keep watching. The main character, I did not like- I thought he was a bit of an ass and I didn't care about the supporting characters (except Ethan Hawk).

Speaking of Ethan Hawk, he's by far the best part of the film next to the cinematography and shot composition. It's a technically well made film, but it's boring as hell.

If you'd have took about 30 minutes off of the run time, it might have been digestible. But no, it's long, drawn out and pretentious.

Linklaters director is noting to get hype about its fine. Nothing worse nothing more.

The script was okay but could feel a bit cheesy at times.

Overall this is a boring, unmemorable and unrewarding experience that doesn't deserve most of the praise it's getting.

Metacritic has it in their top 5 of all movies ever by critic score. If you've watched it, it should be clear that, while not a terrible movie, it is certainly nowhere close to a top 5 movie of all time.

Certainly filming the same children for 12 years is a neat gimmick.....But its still a gimmick. The rest of the film surrounding that gimmick is really nothing all that special. The acting is okay. Cinematography is pedestrian. The screenplay is pedestrian. The story of growing up presented here itself is not very compelling. Sorry to say but the child actors here really were very bad at acting (not that that could have been foreseen when they started). The only really neat or special part of this movie is watching the children age as the film progresses, which does not by itself make it deserving of a perfect score for film-making all time. Because that's just a gimmick, not a complete film. I thought the evolution of Ethan Hawke's character was the most interesting part of the film, but everyone else was pretty boring. It is worth watching, but come on this is not one of the best movies of all time.

It sought to do what no previous film had ever attempted, that being filming the actors over several years as they grew rather than trying to cast others who looked similar at various ages. That in and of itself is a remarkable feat. However, like many films that try to accurately emulate what real life is like, this story didn't have much of a plot. It is understandably difficult to have an overarching theme when trying portray the life and struggles of an adolescent boy. That is perhaps why this particular film seemed to wander significantly. There were a couple of really good scenes and a few powerful lessons that one could take away from this motion picture, but simply good scenes, unfortunately, do not make a good movie. Expand
