Good movie. Using the same actors over a 12 year period was very interesting but something was missing. I'm not even sure what it was but it wasn't there.

Engaging to the very end

It's a good movie - not great cinema.

Beyond the clever concept, Boyhood is little more than a coming of age film. It is warm and charming and feels very real. I enjoyed my time with these characters.

When I heard that this movie was shot for 12 years, I thought it was a brilliant idea. I was ready to be mind blown like the time I watched Gravity.
But when I finally watched it, I thought the film was aimless for the most part. I worried this might be the case when I learned that the movie didn't have a set story and adapted itself to the lead actor's real-life experiences as it went along. My worry turned out to be true: it's basically just a bunch of unrelated events clumsily put together. I don't think even Linklater himself knew where the movie was going, until maybe the very end. I felt like the movie was wandering a lot. At the end of the day, I believe that the 12-year-long filming thing was mostly a gimmick.
Some people might argue that the very fact that there is no point in this movie is the good thing about it because the movie is life itself. Well, I'd rather watch a movie that has a clear beginning, middle, and end and actually knows where it's headed, because my own life is enough for a lifelike experience so to speak.
And another thing, I thought the movie was trying too hard with its political agenda. Sure, filmmakers can incorporate their politics into their work. But it only works when their political views are carefully interwoven with other things, which isn't the case in this film. And I'm a liberal like Linklater so that's saying something.
That said, I think Patricia Arquette gives an Oscar-worthy performance in the movie. She really saved the film for me.
I wouldn't necessarily call this a bad film, but it certainly doesn't deserve the hype and praise it currently gets.

Boyhood through simplicity achieved something that decades of movies didnt: give an unpretentious opinion about humanity and life.
Congratulations and thank you for this awesome movie.

Great film. I loved almost everything about it. I wasn't as much about the end as I was with the rest of the film, but it was overall amazing. Would definitely recommend.

And, over the course of those 12 years, Richard Linklater kept returning to his actors, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, his real-life daughter Lorelei Linklater, and new-comer Ellar Coltrane, who was 6 years old when the filming started, to craft a story over time about the challenges of a family growing up and changing as the parents try to survive and raise their children in the world. The film is long, clocking in at almost three hours.
The act of filming a story over 12 years creates challenges of its own that standard film schedules avoid. And one of the most remarkable things of the film is the manner in which passing time and the aging of the characters has been handled. There are no jarring jump cuts forward in time. No supers imposed on the screen to tell us it’s 2004. Or 2008. No jump cuts into the middle of the expected and well-worn rites of passage, the traditional indicators that mark the progression of life. High School graduation, College, first loves. There is so much more as each sequence slips into the next that the aging of the characters becoming almost incidental.
This is not a film that is concerned with the paradigms of Hollywood story structure as taught by screenwriting books. This is a film whose story structure and form has more in common with a documentary than it does with the traditional form of family drama. This is not the family dramas of the fifties and the sixties wherein some dark family secret has to be exorcised out from the family closet and dragged into the light of truth. This is a family drama that doesn’t plays itself out so much as just piles itself on event by event in continuous layers. Quite possibly, docudrama has finally found its true definition.
The film’s story starts with Olivia (Patricia Arquette) struggling as a single mother to bring up and support her two young children, Mason and Samantha. Money is always an issue for this young family and, in the opening of the film, it is clear the children’s father is absent. The issues of the material well being of the family are contrasted and played out against the family’s emotional needs and well being.
Mason Sr. returns from working in Alaska after being absent for a year and a half. The true nature of Mason Sr.’s role as the children’s father during his year and a half absence seems to be left intentionally ambiguous. The clashes between the two parents early in the film over past issues are also left deliberately vague. The mother and father don't play out the roles of protagonist and antagonist as they fight over their children. Richard Linklater has deliberately avoided that in favor of a storyline that is much broader than those story strictures would allow. It isn’t easy to pick a villain and a hero between the parents in this story. There are other villains that appear and disappear throughout the long arc of this film but the parents seem to grow closer and develop a respect for each other as they pursue independent lives.
This isn’t a story where the main character has a dream and pursues it. This is a story where characters have their dreams and must abandon them for their own good and the good of others.
It is evident that Mason’s father comes to maturation slowly. He is still a “boy” in the beginning of the film struggling to hold onto his adolescent ambitions of being a song writer and a musician while the demands of fatherhood pressure him to give up that pursuit . In the end, the best he can do is hand down the remnants of his adolescent ambitions to his son.But even in Mason Sr.’s delayed growth to full adulthood, there is value to be had. The still-alive boy in Mason Sr. allows him to connect to his children emotionally in a very vital and important way.
His willingness and demand to connect to his children on their emotional level and to feed his own emotional needs with theirs contrasts sharply with the disciplinarian and authoritarian figures of Mason’s stepfathers.
In this, the destructive power of misunderstood masculinity is on display in the role of fatherhood.
There is a dramatic circular parallel between Mason Sr. and Mason Jr. at the end of the film because all of this may well be the same for Mason. We leave Mason at the end of the film at the age of 18, one foot still in boyhood and one foot firmly on the path of his adult life. He is now studying to be a photographer in College and it remains to be seen as to whether or not he will be able to pursue his artistic ambitions or will he repeat the cycle of his father, relenting his artistic ambitions late in life by the necessities of survival.

The story, while not necessarily bad, isn't particularly interesting either. It's just the life of a boy, and many scenes will leave you wondering "what was the point of showing that?".

It's worth seeing for the novelty of being shot over 12 years, but that's about it.

I also fell asleep during 3/4 of the movie, so I had my mom explain the rest of the almost non existent plot.
Over all, this movie is a bore, and you should instead spen your time watching the godfather, Star Wars, or kill bill (which are great movies by the way) over this movie

He used the same boy, Ellar Coltrane, same girl, Lorelei Link later (yes, the director’s daughter) plus the main adult actors such as Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as Coltrane’s divorced parents. The film is fiction covering a period of time from when Coltrane was 6-7 and Linklater was a couple of years older until we see the latter off at college and Coltrane, at 18, graduating from high school and he too is going off to college. We watch these two children grow into adults, physically, as they did in real life. Whether the same technique was used with Hawke and Arquette is hard to tell as they were/at the age actors don’t change too much physically.

The story is linear as we see Mason (Coltrane) going through life in Texas much as boys have grown all time. Samantha (Linklater) goes through her rebellious period, pink hair anybody?, and we too watch her grow up but the picture concentrates on her brother. Dad (Hawke) and Mom (Arquette) get divorced when the children are young and Mom keeps choosing wrong men though she is smart enough to go back to school, gets her degree and finds an excellent job as a college teacher. Dad goes though a period of not knowing who he is and what he wants and becomes a weekend Dad who spoils the kids and is the ‘fun’ parent while Mom is the stern, disciplining one. There is no doubt that both parents love their children.

It has been two hours since I left this film that is 2 hours and 40 minutes long and I still don’t know whether I like it or not but I am still thinking about it. Hawke and Arquette are as professional and good as you would expect with Hawke giving one of his best performances on film. None of the supporting cast makes a false step. It is watching Coltrane and Linklater as they grow that is spellbinding and the director took a chance not knowing if they could act expressing their changes over 12 years but he certainly can be proud of his daughter’s performance and Coltrane is a natural actor.

I think parents who have had teenagers, and watched them grow, will appreciate this movie more than a childless person but the latter will find this movie different from the run of movies about teenagers and the evolution of Samantha and Mason from children to adults.

This is a work director/screenplay writer Richard Linklater should be proud of and will be very involved with awards time.

It works so well for what it is, and is such a thoroughly enjoyable work of art, that it should be impervious to the judgment you'd pass on a normal film. I saw the movie with my my sister and after it was all over she said to me "That was mostly a comedy." And to my surprise I agreed. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "Boyhood" comes with an interesting idea behind it, but never uses this gimmick for anything more than a tool to enhance the bildungsroman style of the story. We start off with a young Mason going through a very normal life and end with him graduating high school still a very normal, if slightly anti-establishment, attitude.

Although you might expect ~160 minutes and literally 12 years to create an interesting character, Mason never really comes into his own. We are shown many different stages of life and clichéd moments--but at a certain point seeing another youth look at lingerie magazines loses its humor and originality. None of the characters are especially memorable or go through any kind of arc. Sure, Mason changes over the years but not through what we see; what we see are only the most typical and forgettable scenes of Mason's life. Why do we need to see how cool a person Mason's dad can be (portrayed in the conventional method of 'divorced dad is more fun while divorced mom cares more about schoolwork') yet we never get to see his interests grow and develop? Why does Mason stop loving video games and move onto loving cameras?

The film subsists solely on the gimmick of aging. As mentioned before no character arc is fleshed out, even the mother continues to date men who end up being alcoholics. There is no real sustenance to this film, only ever becoming captivating in its nostalgic reminders about video games, TV shows, or technology changing over the years. While this does give moments of entertainment, the whole film sags around these sequences.

The cinematography, praised for "loving Texas" in various reviews, does little to enhance the banal change from place to place. Not once was there a shot even close to the immensely superior *Paris, Texas* which, in a much shorter amount of time, showed us more unique and memorable locations than anything present here in Boyhood.

In conclusion, Boyhood is all hype. If the idea interests you, at least try to spend little money watching it. For real character development you could go to almost any other movie, even for a film with character development but little explanation you could at least watch some Maurice Pialat. Nothing in this film is special except for a dedication that only really comes across in the two child actors, and even then is never used for little more than visual continuity. Please, watch something else and save your time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to give points for the creative idea behind the film. Filming every year for twelve years is quite the feat, especially when it involves children. And without a doubt, the film was very compelling and it strongly resonated emotionally with me. But there were a few glaring flaws that prevent me from giving it the fawning reviews some other people have given it.

For starters, we never find out what happens to the stepsiblings. Did their dad kill them? Did they kill him? Did they run away from home? Did he lose custody of them? Did the whole family die in a housefire from when the dad fell asleep drunk on his bed smoking a cigarette? Here we spent half an hour getting to know these kids and see their connection with the main children, and yet they're not even mentioned a single time in the second half of the film?

Another thing that REALLY bothered me was how the second stepdad just vanished. In one scene he's telling the boy "I pay for you and your mother to live in my house" and by the next scene he's nowhere to be seen. No mention of a death, divorce or separation. The mom talks about selling the house because "I can't afford it." Seriously, how is there NO mention of her husband after that?

Finally the last thing that bugged me was the scene where the boy is in 8th grade and is hanging out in the house with his friends, his friend's older brother and the brother's friends. Honestly this scene had the worst acting I can recall ever seeing in any movie. It honestly seems like they only did a single take of the scene.

It was like watching a liberal campaigning for office bringing up just about every liberal hot topic to push down the throats of its viewers. As expected, because of this the liberal media and Hollywood will love this movie, hence all the Oscar nominations.

It would be nice to see a movie that had no political overtones (liberal or conservative) to it be nominated once in a while, but that is not what drives Hollywood.

With that being said, it was a brilliant idea to film these characters over an 11-12 year period. There was just no storyline and it ended making you fell like you were waiting for there to be some type of conclusion and/or wondering if you missed something. After watching the movie a 2nd time, I realized I did not miss anything, because there was nothing to miss. There was no point to this movie except for watching the characters grow up physically. A complete waste of time-twice!

As a person who grew up during the same time frame, it was like seeing bits of my childhood come to life and leading into college which I am in now. The authenticity is perfect as it was shot during the actual years it's depicting in the film. However the political propaganda could have been excluded from the film for the sake of social/political differences. There were a few bits of social propaganda as well such as the depiction of a "confederate flag waving anti-democrat southerner." But all in all the film was fantastic. I felt the depiction of the children was a little stereotypical as well. Not every teenager is a pop-singing, drug taking, beer chugging, soulless, mumbling, whatever-attitude, sex starved, anti-parent child. In fact, most of them don't fit that depiction. I was hoping for a different and more realistic depiction of teenagers from this movie. I only give the film a 9 for those two reasons for which I usually take 3-4 marks off, however this film started with a 12 rating because of its innovation and uniqueness. Will definitely go down as a classic in cinema. Expand

Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, but if this is the best movie of the year then there isn't much for me to look forward too. On the plus side, kudos to Richard Linklater for making a well-directed film, but what really is the point of the whole exercise -- to make a movie that was shot over a period of 12 years with the same actors in the end as where there in the beginning? Well, that's quite a feat I admit, but it doesn't automatically translate to an entertaining film. I guess it helps to be a parent which I'm not. You can hold that against me if you like. Expand

However, it is not a story per se. The is no beginning, middle and end other than the gaining of independence. There is not overt growth of character, just methods of coping. I would highly recommend this film for psychology students, parents who are abusive and perhaps victims of abuse who may have their feelings validated. If you go around and follow people for 12 years, make a documentary, and show the world what really happens in 12 years. Since -in this case- they wanted to create a work of fiction, i'm a little disappointing about what they came up with. Felt also a little cheap how they put in all kinds of references to 'how the world was at that time', like talking about cellphones, text messages, Facebook profiles etc. Again, if this was a documentary, that would be fine. But as a work of fiction, i'm disappointed. Expand

And I'm not talking about being filmed over 12 years with the same actors. More importantly, this movie is extremely understated and there is no discernible plot besides 12 years in the life of a boy and his family. Thus, there are no arcs and climaxes - this movies IS plodding, as some have described it. This movie is first and foremost about life and in being so moves at the pace of life - not the pace of a hollywood blockbuster.

That's not to say there is no rhyme or reason to this movie. There is no defined plot but the scenes are not random. The movie is a collection of vignettes which build on each other and important aspects of life are all there but none of them are so overwhelming to replace the central theme which is simply life. In this sense, Boyhood is a profound achievement.

I finished watching this movie with a lingering and deep sense of emotion and reflection. I don't really know how to describe it but I feel like every other movie I've watched before this one was relatively contrived or overproduced. I think this is the power of this movie.

I can't believe that rotten tomatoes and metacritic gave this film high scores, either because they don't know what real films or they just have their heads up their prideful asses. On the other hand he has very nice moments with his father who tries hard to be the best parent he can be. The mother tries too but it is a different story. Also we see some nice family gatherings.
Beautiful movie that makes the audience experience the process of growing up.
Richard Linklater took twelve years to shoot this film. This is breakthrough, something that has never done before, truly a master piece.

Following the life of a boy from primary school until college may easily have fallen into the category, but it has none of the above problems.

The main character is Mason Jr. (Ellar Coltrane) literally "growing up in public". Arquette plays mom Olivia and Hawke is dad Mason Sr. Annoying Lorelei Linklater (the director's daughter) plays sister Sam. The script moves swiftly through some important moments in Mason Jr.'s life from age 6. Dad is often absent and has problems accepting "real" life, such as a normal job which would not fulfil his dream of becoming a famous musician. Mom tries to improve family life and fails, marrying an abusive drunkard professor.
Mason Jr. is relocated a couple of times, losing his childhood friends and going through the difficulties of adolescence, compounded by mom's divorce, new job and new boyfriend.

However, the best part of the movie for me was the normalcy of the situations. No super-drama, just ordinary life with the usual disappointments and small traumas (bullying at school, first love, etc…)
Luckily we are spared Mason Jr.'s first sexual experience and explanations about what is going on in his head. We observe him and may be reminded of episodes from our own childhood, such as why our parents made us play the "game of silence". Anybody can find a familiar episode, which will probably remind us that there is just a limited number of "first" experiences in our life.

Coltrane is fine as the young introverted boy, but I started to dislike him as a gloomy adolescent. I am not sure which part of it was acting. The scene with Mason Jr. and his girlfriend walking around Austin a whole night might have been an ideal link with the "Before" series, unfortunately Coltrane does not have much of the charisma and acting skills of Hawke.

Finally, the first 2/3 of the movie move smoothly, but the story gets stuck towards the end, just when morose teenage Mason Jr. gets most screen time. Contrary to the "Before" series, I am definitely not interested in a follow-up.

The name 'boyhood' is kind of misleading although the movie's shown
only about the boyhood of Mason until he goes for his graduation to some college and get interested in photography.
Critics really liked more than people do! Because the project had
enough risks for a successful execution but Richard Linklater did it,
its really something that have never seen before something unique and
risky. From 2002 to 2013 total of 45 days of shooting until the boy
grew up from his age 7 to 18. Such a long contract with the crew and if
Richard dies then who'd manage the such long project! Of course Ethan
Hawke, one of Richard's favorites but Linklatet did it. It shows what
happens to our life with every passing time and according to him
nothing. You grow up, you struggle, you baffled, you are taken care of
then fall in love, get married, have kids..and what happens? Life goes
on...but nothing really happens. To illustrate this he took the life of
a 7 years kid, Coltrane and changed his name to Mason in the movie. I
like Ethan Hawke, he's the first choice of Richard's movies especially
for his before sunrise series, most of Richard's movies which are
usually dramatic so Ethane was perfect to be a jobless dad who tries to
direct the right path for his son and every year with Coltrane he shot
the movie.

I really like the father-son scenes in which they talk about everything
and Mason gets advices from his father. They talked about movies like
star wars if there's a possibility of it to another one and that
happened too, what they predicted in 2008 that came true!!, brilliant.
Excellent achievement of the director and how realistic the movie
is,what a potential remains in the movie! 12 year project doesn't or
couldn't contain some top rated actors especially the theme
character,Mason. Coltrane was a risky, unpredictable one. I can't say
he did that great as the movie deserves but It was such a great risk if
the main character would have failed! But he did well not like the
growing characters of harry potter movies but OK for the slow soothing
unpredictable 12 years project. Various changes in a decade can happen!
That altered number of changes to Mason, in her character, attitude.
Except him even in our life cool electronics stuffs like no one uses
the old phones or old vintage saloon cars new smartphones and beautiful
cars are everywhere. His dad finally sells his Pontiac GTO although he
loves that! There's something called emotional attachment, kids are
like that! Especially kids are attached, so Mason stared a horrible
perplexed look at his dad's most loved car when he sold that so he
could by a new car for his son when he turns to 16. Again, a baffled
look while her mother meets the professor, Bill and talks like she's
getting attached to him Why does that happen? Doesn't dad love his mom,
but its the responsibility the capability that control's you and like
every creatures on the earth human too get attached to those who can
give them a better environment and then what happens? Nothing! Life
goes on. This is the most important essence the movie stands upon.
Nothing really happens in the movie. His mom then gets married to
another guy till she stands upon her own feet becomes what she wanted
to be and then in the ends she asks what shall happen to her, she
sacrificed most of his life for her kids and in the end what happens to
her? Of course, the answer is nothing. But 2hr 45min can be really boring if you're not that into drama movies or even if you are you can still feel it because of this boring but true factor 'nothing'. There isn't anything in the storyline to be entertained or inspiring but the direction and the labour in the movie, the time it took the pain isn't that possible for every directors. Its a new style a unique and significant one of movie direction. That's what everyone loves about. The story isn't epic rather boring, the actors aren't that great rather unknown, the movie is what that everyone's life is about, nothing but the project is fascinating yet magnificent by Richard Linklater.

Anything works - a laugh, a cry, a shock, fear. Some sort of emotional shakeup to re-grab our attention. After the initial novelty of the aging actors wore off, say...at about 30 minutes into this film, I fell into a numbing state of boredom that lasted until the end of this very. long. movie.

I began to wonder about dinner, my plans for the following day, just what was that weird smell in the theater... But most of all, I wondered, "For the love of gawd, when would this movie ever end??" I kept glancing at my watch, shifting in my seat, wondering if my companion was feigning interest (she was). The story was just boring. A boy, his mom, his sister, school, family matters, driving, girl issues...sure the acting was good, it was interesting to note the various facial changes as the younger actors aged, but that just wasn't enough to carry the movie. This movie has cured..totally cured me of following the advice of the professional movie reviewers.

Movies are suppose to entertain. If I walk out thinking I would never, ever want to endure a film again, then in my opinion, it didn't accomplish what it set out to do. King's Speech or Hundred Foot journey...those were two great films where the story carried the plot along at a nice clip and kept me engaged. Boyhood contains good acting but plan to be bored after the first hour.

Where do I start other than to say than this movie took 2 hours and 45 minutes of my life I can never get back! Boy did Linklater really miss an opportunity here to capture what was really going on for this young boy who turns teen who turns young adult. You see a mom who twice makes poor choices in men and we never really know the depth of the impact this has on not only this boy but his sister. How did it feel for them to leave their step siblings so abruptly...no one knows, the movie transitioned and never dealt with the psychological repercussions for all involved. The bullying that is often so pervasive for boys in middle school...bathroom scene took all of a couple minutes of a 2 hr. 45 min movie...really? Boys have their own complexity and this movie was nothing but superficially going through the motions for far too long. Where was the editor? While Ethan Hawke was a like able character and perhaps in the end the most put together adult, couldn't help but feel his role and style of his dialogue was a mere extension of his character in Linklater's trilogy Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight. If you want insight as to the depth of how boys really feel...You will NOT find in in this movie. The critics lack depth by rating this movie so high. Pay attention to the user reviews, not the critics...if you do, it's at your own risk! Expand

The movie starts incredibly well, featuring the early stages of both a boy and a girl and all the subtle details that makes the difference between genders. The parents going through real relationship problems. The mother being amorous and caring and the father taking them out of their comfort zones and being active.
Everything is awesome until the boy turns 15. His 15th birthday is one of the most amazing birthdays any man could have. He is given a shotgun for god sakes! From there the movie takes a 360 degree turn and becomes more of a series of propaganda scenes. The acting performance of the boy suddenly felt ungenuine. The boy is not the only one taken his manhood from. Suddenly every single male character becomes a confused wuss and is starts being reflected in the women around their lives. I just could not take it any more when I saw his sweet mother in tears of desperation. People around me laugh as the poor woman screamed for something to hold on to life.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were some really beautiful and insightful moments in Boyhood...very brief moments...book ended by hours of mind-numbing nothingness. Unfortunately, overall, it feels like Linklater turned out the equivalent of breaking out some dusty photo albums and showing them to strangers who don't have much in the way of contextual background. The characters are generally have no depth and aren't particularly like-able.

It was a neat project. I applaud the effort and the idea. It really just doesn't work as far as making a great film. It was good...or it was better than OK, and the novelty added a bit more spice to the otherwise bland movie. The critics are going to LOVE this movie!

I love the idea of the movie. I even love the moments that took me back to relive some of my own childhood. It just felt like it belonged in an extended (and probably very boring) Lifetime Network television series instead of crammed into a movie that was more than just a little disjointed.

I read somewhere (I wish I could quote where) that Linklater really avoided cliches with this movie. He was either lying to the author of the article or himself. His main character, Mason, Jr., ended up becoming the Indie movie darling stereotype...Brooding, disaffected, artist, loner, philosopher...who somehow scored a Photography scholarship to college after giving every indication he might fail out of school due to apathy...poof...movie magic...Ugh.

The fact that this is fiction and not a documentary following a real family for 12 years makes it even more frustrating...Where is the story? Where is the character development?

I like it as a journey of growing up with some relatable things and nostalgic events, but other than that it was EXTREMELY FLAWED. A lot of things that happened through the first half and second half were really underdeveloped and If you think about it, it doesn't make sense and you end up seeing it as a mess. The screenplay was good but some parts of it were really forced and written in a poor and unfocused way just to give sense to the scenes. I was expecting the script to be as amazing as the one in the "Before trilogy" (directed by Linklater), but it wasn't that good. If the screenplay was like "Before Sunset" the movie would be an epic masterpiece, but sadly it wasn't. It is really sad, because in both movies (Boyhood and Before Sunset) there is a huge dependence on the script and that's because it doesn't happen that much on the story of both films. Before Sunset worked really great but Boyhood not so much. I was entertained by it and it's concept was interesting, but it is difficult for me to see it as one of the best movies of 2014. Expand

This is one of the realist movies since Shawshank Redemption that I can deem perfect. It captures the life and world around Mason along with him, as he grows he is constantly changing, adapting, molding into the person he thinks and might finally believe he wants to be. Not to mention being accepted, before the final act hurting him deeply and causing him to question what he really is, before realizing that in life, you not only seize a perfect moment, but it seizes you. I knew going in that this movie would have a hard time living up to it's reputation (universal acclaim), but it didn't even come close.
The idea is fantastic, but the execution wasn't. Some of the acting was mediocre at best, especially the sister (who it turns out is the director's daughter). [Note to directors: Ad-lib dialogue is really challenging, and if is not done right it's pretty terrible].
The story line left a lot to be desired - it didn't feel natural.
This was a great idea that could have been so much more, but one cool concept can't carry a movie.
It's still worth seeing, just don't expect the movie of the year or anything close.

It may not be the most exciting film to watch, or the most interesting, but as i found with the film Inside Llyewn Davis it is a nice and pleasant viewing experience. And that's what this film is: an experience. The 12 years of filming works meticulously well and really helps develop the characters as real people. The film is about growing up, and the reason the message and work comes across so well is because that's literally what happens: they grow up. Other films that try this with different actors don't really work and you find them a little too boring or sentimental, but this film works with the growing up mechanic so well that you can really relate to the film even if you don't follow a life like the one portrayed in the film. I must say the acting is pretty solid pretty much from the get go, but the character Sam i found a little bit obvious as not being a real person. However, all the other actora felt genuine, and that's why i felt i connected with this film. A must watch. Expand

If you can appreciate quiet, intimate, introspective character studies, like 'Lost in Translation,' 'The Kids Are All Right,' or Linklater's own 'Before' trilogy, then you'll probably find a lot to love in 'Boyhood.' If those kinds of movies aren't your cup of tea, then likely neither will this movie. Expand

Boyhood is a movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It had to believe that a project like this could be pulled off over 12 years. Ellar Coltrane was great throughout this movie. It would be neat if this movie is the only thing he does. He really shows what its like to be a growing male. I found many aspects of his life that we similar to events in my own life. Ethan Hawke was great also as the father. I'm going to say that this is the best thing he's ever done. Ethan Hawke is a bad that you wish everyone had. Richard Linklater has pulled off a movie that has captured a point in time and although it may not be relevant forever it will be one of the most significant movies of this period of time. Linklater even did so while casting his own daughter with little experience in one of the lead roles. I would be 100% happy with Boyhood winning best picture this year and I wouldn't be shocked if it does. Expand

Phenomenal

When you think back to Slackers you remember how easy that movie flowed. How comfortably it drifted. Just go with it. Let it happen, live in the moment. Then there's the Before trilogy which again seemed effortless and free-flowing yet constructed with so much care that you knew this filmmaker was not only unusual, but acutely human. That he cherished experience and learning and submitted to the eternal present, surrendering to and tinkering with fate, while tending to the perpetually immediate situation with enormous sensitivity and regard.

But nothing could prepare you for Boyhood. You can't overstate the fact that it's a grand free-flowing time-lapse experiment and that most of the actors--no not actors, not performers--most of the people were cast when the central figure was a very young boy, looking up at the sky, having no idea how his future would unfold. The world might be a stage but Richard Linkater is not omnipotent. As a definitive work-in-progress, a daring collaboration with fate and destiny, who could really know how the boy's script was going to turn out, and how the wide array of voices in his life would shape him as he stumbles toward adulthood? Only a true sure-footed and fluid filmmaker, an authentic disarming innovator could raise this baby with as much beauty and wisdom. Dazed and Confused? Make room for Clear and Composed.

Hear the lamb howl. Boyhood is a daring experimental wolf wrapped in conventional wool. Needing to be shot chronologically, the linear time-line and 12-year shooting schedule called for a fresh and original approach to crafting a movie. If something went wrong during the many long gaps in production, say, if an actor suddenly became unavailable, or some drastic circumstance threatened to break the continuity of the boy and his family's life, there's no going back to re-shoot. No relying on special effects make-up or casting young and old versions of a character. The faith invested in this concept and the delicate handling of it's execution is a marvel to witness, blooming before our eyes.

Patricia Arquette was growing up too. Aging faster than Ellar Coltrane, it appeared. This movie defies breaking up into a series of disjointed, episodic fragments. And Arquette stitches together an admirable and dedicated performance as the ubiquitous maternal defender who struggles to keep herself and her family from falling apart. Because of the blur between fiction and reality, between drama and documentary, and because of the way Linklater is able to nurture the process and allow his films to take on a life of their own, Arquette may not be acting on set any more than she has to in real life. A slight adjustment in perspective and this movie could have been called Motherhood.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is definitely different than any other movie that you've seen. Does that mean it's good? Not for me. I love Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke too. Before Sunrise, and the sequels were great. A Scanner Darkly, School of Rock, are great. This movie falls short, in my appraisal.

The movie chronicles the adolescence of a young boy named Mason. He faces a lot of things. His parents are divorced, and they argue a lot. There is a countless array of bad step-fathers that are abusive. He falls in love and deals with a breakup.

My problem with the movie is that Mason doesn't evolve. Throughout the movie he seems to stay his lazy slacker self, regardless of how many people tell him he's got to shape up. The movie ends with Mason walking through Texas with a group of new friends, including an attractive young college student who gives him flirty eyes and conversation when she onscreen. They sit on the site of a mountain and the girl tells him her ideas about how time (the day) isn't something to be seized, but something that seizes you.

While that message may be something that is quite profound, it tastes sour when told by someone so young with so little experience. Mason quickly agrees with her (of course he does) and they just sit there. I don't know why it bothers me so much. Maybe it's Mason's scruffy demeanor. I'm just sort of tired of teenagers who like to wax intellectually about time and the human condition as if they are Nietzsche. I'm of the Louis C.K. way of thinking when it comes to acclimation of wisdom. Wisdom is gained through experiences, through decades of observation and thought. Mason hasn't really transformed as a character at all. He hasn't really gone through anything that changes him, he hasn't come to any sort of realization about him or his life. He's kinda just floating through his life.

Maybe this movie wasn't made for me. Maybe it was made for people Mason's age who can relate to him. Maybe the movie was made for people who are a product of divorce. Maybe it was meant for parents who wonder what it might be like to grow up at the turn of the century who want to compare it to their own childhoods.

I didn't really get anything out of the movie. It wasn't for me. I still look forward to Richard Linklater's work. Maybe next time he'll catch my inspiration.

I don't care much about the 12 years of real time either, because it only added so much in the overall experience. I would prefer more focused and interesting story-line instead.
That being said, it is hard to predict how every other spectator would precept it and from what angle. But one thing, I am quite certain of, is that it dragged too much for what could be much shorted and more eventful tale. The ending was kind of charming though.

Just because something took 12 years to film doesn't mean it will be good or original. Put the same story in film that was made in about a month, and it would be average. That doesn't make it terrible, but it is decent to say the least.

This is cinematic realism at its absolute finest. Everything about it, the characters, their conversations, and their mundane everyday experiences are captured in a way that mimics real life like no other film I've ever seen, not to mention watching the characters literally grow up before your eyes is surreal and deeply fascinating. This movie is basically just a bunch of scenes documenting this kid's life, some of which will make you laugh, make you sad, make you nostalgic, make you hopeful, etc. There really is no overarching plot, but nonetheless, I feel like I could have sat through another 3 hours of this movie! The acting is also some of the most natural and effortless I've ever seen. The characters seem strangely familiar in everything they say and do, which I suppose is the point. Overall, Boyhood leaves you feeling satisfied and somewhat in awe at how incredible our lives are once you put things into perspective. Expand

Full of a variety of cultural references and a very specific zeitgeistAn absolute must-see, Linklater's 'Boyhood' is a unique movie in every aspect. It offers a lot to the viewer, but it also demands quite an effort to be fully comprehended. Full of a variety of cultural references and a very specific zeitgeist atmosphere, this movie is a profound and aesthetically perfect epic dedicated to life itself.

Linklater's hyperrealism is something that contributes to the magic of the film itself. It is not a movie, it is a story about a boy, his development inside the boiling cauldron we all call life, his struggles, both external and internal and, ultimately, his victory over life itself as MJ comes out stronger and more mature. You never actually perceive it to be a movie, rather a story of a boy you're witnessing first hand, either as a direct participant or a third-person observer, but always within the story itself, never distancing yourself back to the sofa or seat you're actually in. All the actors are brilliantly adapted to their roles, never over-acting or showing signs of egoistical vanity, dedicated to both the idea of the film itself and the story of Mason Evans, Jr., the main protagonist of the film itself.

Finally, the aesthetics of the film is stunning. The technical details, a well-made choice of scenery and moment, the authentic presentation of a human emotion that just flows through you via the screen like you're actually there and captures you fully, forcing you to relieve that same emotion, via nostalgia or anything else, within yourself - all of that and much more contributes to that specific aesthetic moment that is 'Boyhood'. Because, it really is just a moment, a moment of 12 years compressed into three hours, but so rich and fantastic that it is much more than just a cinematic experience, much more than just a movie.

'Boyhood' is an absolute master-piece, a work of art in every sense of the work, elevating the often pompous and overly self-worthy genre of art films and elevating the cinematic experience as a whole. A story that must be seen, carefully, remembered and loved. It reached the status of a classic immediately, surely to be remembered in history and is, certainly, one of the best movies ever made and one of the best stories ever told.

Focused on the character named Mason from his sixteen-eighteenth year, the great difference of the film is to see the actors poisoning naturally during the years that pass by. Very gratifying to see the evolution of each character during the lapéis of time this makes the movie true, alive. The mother of the mason played by Patricia Arquette does a great job with the evolution and the physical and mental disengagement of the character in the beginning for example she wants To do college, then to be a teacher. The father of the mason played by Ethan Hawke is incredible. The maturation of the character is evident during the years. As the film portrays small moments in the life of Mason it is impossible not to become familiar with at least one of them new school, First love, domestic abuse, alcohol, drugs, etc, this makes the film an incredible experience the cuts are perfect, the sequences plans are very good and the story n It does not become tiring at any time what is quite rare in a movie lasting 130 minutes. The film has an incredibly well-written screenplay that is due to the actors who make the film look like a real and familiar experience. Ends in the second certain. In general it is a film that took years of production and a lot of effort involved and this generated some of the best cinematic experiences.note 100 Expand

On the one hand, it elevates the medium of film to equivalent of fine art, faithfully documents every moment repeatedly within a long period of time. On the other hand, it explores how we can use movies to translate biography -- in the end, every single life is capsulized in a story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll make things clear from the beginning: I enjoyed 'Boyhood' way more than six out of ten. It has some honestly touching and moving scenes, moments and evolutions. Empathy for the characters is sometimes effortless, sometimes really hard considering some of their choices. 'Boyhood' appear to be in many ways the story of a regular boy (and by extension his ever-changing family) living in America. This movie has no other pretention than to show daily routines and the lukewarmness of reality and it successfully manages to do so.

This film features ordinary characters dealing with real life issues such as financial problems, (multiple) separations and divorces, growing up and aging, changing careers, witnessing domestic violence, forging an identity, etc. Acting is poor in overall (excepted for Ethan Hawke obviously) which contributes to make almost all characters look like normal people. Anyway, we have to admit that Richard Linklater made a risky bet on this film and really put all the chances on his side. It's a pity that he had to fall into the trap of conventions far too often and especially by making terrifying adults by their stereotyped characters.

With this particular artistic and conceptual approach of filming for 12 years, we have a finished product with no particular plot and that suffers from spasms making it even harder to understand the red line throughout. Too many scenes appear to be anecdotic or meaningless.

The beginning isn't a true beginning, the end surely not an end. 'Boyhood' is way more like a documentary about daily life in this first quarter of 21st century than an actual movie.

The key is that it's a more contemplative kind, similar to a documentary, there is nothing to reflect. Richard Linklater brings this film and tells everyone, this is life. The level of reality that reach the story is shocking, takes the viewer to his own childhood, having two characters to identify with, Mason for men and Samantha for women; and for parents there is Olivia and Mason Sr., make your choice. Maybe not with the best plot, not clever script and simple performances (except for Patricia Arquette, who is absolutely breathtaking), but hey that's how it's life. Sure, many of the events here have been depicted before and the whole coming of age thing has been done to death, but man, it has never been done like this before. Sporting a killer soundtrack to guide us as we trek through Mason Jr's formative years, Boyhood is a slice of life film like never before. Things happen for no reason, things come and go, and things fall apart out of thin air, just like real life. This film is extraordinary for many reasons, one of which has to be the way it was filmed. You do not see films made over the course of 12 years and to see this only helps it be all more powerful. As we grow up with the actors throughout the film, you truly feel like you are almost watching a documentary on these people's lives, which is an incredible feeling .In addition, it just felt unique and was amazing to watch unfold. In addition, it does not try to create drama. Life is not perfect and things happen randomly, people drift off for no reason at all and you have no idea why and you never see them again. This film is exactly like that and makes no attempts to "Hollywood" things up by tying up all the loose ends, instead it leaves them as is. Plus, one cannot forget that this isn't their whole story; this is only a 12 year period in their lives. Who knows where their stories will end up? The writing is incredible, as is the direction from Richard Linklater, who is a true visionary and has undoubtedly created his magnum opus with this project. The acting from Ellar Coltrane, Patrica Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and the only cast, is incredible. The chemistry and familiar relationships felt so real and authentic. The situations rang true and ultimately made this one feel as though the most authentic coming of age film I have ever seen. There were no one dimensional characters and everyone had a story to tell, just like in real life.

Above all though, I have to say one of the best parts of this film has to be the quotes, in particular one that stood out to me, "I thought there'd be more." Just impeccable writing that manages to sum up what it is to be at that point so well, although I personally have not gotten there, I can sympathize with that line and its meaning. Ultimately, Boyhood deserves the accolades bestowed upon it and is one of the best films of 2014 and will undoubtedly be hailed as a film for the ages. Wow.

The film's length is a bit unwieldy at times, but it also really helps drive home the epic weight of what's been accomplished here, and -- indeed -- the majesty of life itself. Life is far from perfect. In fact, much of life includes suffering, hardship, undue change, and an endless study of "what might have been." But if I'm hearing the movie's message right, it's important to take all of that in stride and to focus more on the present moment, keeping hopeful for what might be in store for us all down the pike. While an interesting experiment (similar to the "7 Up" series), this film is unsuccessful in telling an engrossing story. Does the viewer really care how this kid is going to turn out?

In development for 10 years and somehow, Boyhood is great. It's rare to have a movie that doesn't have any problems with it. It's just a perfect movie, done in such an authentic way too.

But for the cinephile and the patient viewer, "Boyhood" provides a unique viewing experience of singular ambition and veracity and captures the minutiae of adolescence in the 21st century with searing intimacy and an expansive scope. It is, of course, this focus on the mundane that has divided audiences far more than it has divided critics. But "Boyhood" is, at heart, nothing more or less than what it sets out to be: an authentic exploration of growing up. And it accomplishes that with exceptional clarity and honesty. It feels like we viewed it from a young boy's perspective, not the adults behind the camera. As such, there is no defining moment within the film that makes it stand out: the reality of the twelve years it covers on-screen is its defining moment. Shot by shot, it is far from unforgettable but as a whole, it is definitely memorable. At heart, "Boyhood" is an extraordinary way of telling quite an ordinary story. I can't put it any better than that. Expand

Despite this, I am glad to have seen Boyhood. It is a touching movie with outstanding acting, even if it is not the seminal film event that it has been heralded as. Expand
